College Development Plan 2020-21

Page 1

At Holyport College, we have become very good at delivering curriculum content in the classroom and preparing students to do well in exams. The foremost priority in the year’s development plan is therefore to supplement this classroom learning with activities which inspire our students, which encourage them to take and embrace risks and which do so by providing them with joyous, risky and inspirational opportunities in all their experiences at the College. The impact of these opportunities will not be assessed or measurable in the traditional sense but will be evident in their motivation to succeed, their engagement with learning and their development as human beings as follows: •

• • • •

Students will be learn to love learning for its own sake and will be intrinsically motivated by their education Students will develop as independent, inquisitive and creative thinkers Students will learn to embrace risk and to develop greater resilience Students will develop their talents and thinking through doing and making Students will learn to appreciate the beauty of their world

Alongside ensuring academic excellence and the best possible outcomes for all, our priority will be to give students the most inspiring experiences we can along the way.

Explicit opportunities to try/do/experience learning in a different context to sitting in a classroom working from a book including: • Active encouragement of “risky” activities specifically including doing and making • Activities which get students outside • Activities inspired by nature/the environment • Activities involving business/enterprise • Activities utilising technology • Opportunities to engage with art/culture/music • Opportunities to engage with history/re-enactment • Opportunities to think and to engage with philosophy • Activities which are not assessed or quantified in a traditional manner

• • • • • • •

In all curriculum areas and all year groups at least once per half term In the co-curriculum In boarding time In the Sixth Form Committees: “I want to…” In student leadership opportunities In partnership activities with Eton College In activities which benefit the local community

• DHU to lead in coordinating approach in all areas of school life • All departments (both academic and boarding) tasked with forward planning supplementary opportunities prior to September 2020 • Establish a dedicated, ring-fenced fund to support ideas/projects for teachers and students (£15k?) • Three “drop down” days/afternoons per year where departments take a year group and do something completely different • Further development of Outdoor Learning area to include cooking facilities (brick BBQ and clay oven, kiln etc.) and exploration of appropriate livestock • Creation of “Room 13”- bookable indoor space, flexibly furnished which can be used to facilitate a range of activities
