The weekly newsletter for the Holyport College family

Year 9 learn about personal safety and first aid As a former police officer of 13 years I have considerable experience dealing with first aid and advising people on personal safety. I enjoyed sharing my experiences with the year 9 Personal Development class last Wednesday. We covered ways to keep safe when out with friends, including how to make yourself less likely to be a victim of crime. This advice included not walking in the dark on their own, not walking with their expensive items on display and always letting someone know where they are going. I then taught the class about how to deal with serious bleeds, how to check if an injured person is breathing, how to place them in the recovery position and how to administer CPR. Some of the class showed great confidence practicing the recovery position on each other. A test at the end of the lesson showed the class had really listened and they had learnt some valuable skills that could help them save a life. Jessica Boyden – Welfare Officer

FROM THE SIXTH FORM

Upper Sixth Geographers hit London A few of the Upper Sixth Geographers headed into London on Thursday to spend the afternoon at a course run by the Geographical Association at the University of Westminster. During the afternoon they were taught how to get the best marks on their Geography independent investigation (coursework) by two former chief examiners. The students came away brimming with ideas and feeling more equipped to polish off the last sections of their coursework which accounts for 20% of their overall grade.

This week’s Scholars event Emilia Skirmuntt, an Evolutionary Virologist from Oxford University was this week's Visiting Speaker. She was expertly interviewed by Ellen Gilmore and Oscar Newman on a range of issues: from viruses in bats and dolphins, to global pandemics and how to get more girls into STEM subjects. She also talked about her academic journey from Warsaw University to studying two different Masters courses in London and then to her current position at Oxford. It was an inspiring and fascinating session! Next week's speaker will be on Tuesday at 6.45pm (and not the usual Thursday). He is Scott Pepe, an accomplished debater, political activist and lobbyist for the National Farmers' Union. It will be a must for Politics & Economics students. All other students are very welcome as usual!

Children in Need day

We raised a phenomenal total of £1004.60 from the mufti day, bake sale and duck race. Well done to Fawcett House for organising a fantastic charity day and a huge thank you to everyone who got involved. A special note of thanks to Chefs Andy and Gary, from Sodexo, who baked and donated a huge batch of cupcakes for the Fawcett boarders to ice and sell.

Year 9 Boarders’ DofE Skills Baking Club baked for Children in Need. We made cupcakes, mini Victoria sponges, and allergy-free chocolate tray bakes. 

FROM THE SPORTS FIELD

23rd November 2018

Sports news The weather has been tough to face this week, with winter well and truly knocking on our door. But well done to these Year 11 girls who braved the cold on Tuesday night. 

Our senior girls hockey team continued to brave the cold on Wednesday with a 5-0 win over Claires Court! Superb work girls! 

A very special mention to our first XI Football team who are into the quarter finals of the Welsh Cup!

Another very special mention to our 1st XV Rugby Team who are through to the Super 8 Final next week. It’s our first final for our first ever 1st XV, they will play LVS.

Inter-house sport is this Saturday at Eton!! Timings for the day are as follows: Everyone to meet/park at Agars Plough, Eton, SW4 6HR at 9.00am. The girls will play at the new astroturf at Willowbank (across the road). The first match will begin at 9:30am. Presentation of the winners will be at 11:30am and end of proceedings at 11:45am.

 Last weekend the Holyport College Ski Team—Danielle, Lily and Zara Hawkins and Ellie Farrow—ventured to Scotland to ski in the British Schools Championships in Edinburgh. The slope is known for being tight, steep and much longer than any other dry slope. The girls put in a cracking performance and did the school proud. As a team they finished 5th out of 25 teams. Against the English Schools, Holyport placed third. Both are tremendous efforts and the girls did really well.  5
