DIXIT
EDITION 140 4th February 2022
The weekly newsletter for the Holyport College family
Curtain up on The Westbrook Theatre!
In early December, we launched an appeal to raise money to help us convert the Drama Studio into a Studio Theatre. With the College putting in £15,000 of its own funds and with £8,800 already pledged through the generosity of our community, we now only need to raise a further £6,200 to reach our £30,000 target. We’re also delighted to announce that our new theatre will have a new name: The Westbrook Theatre. Westbrook Waste is a local, family run business which drives an innovative and ethical approach to waste management and recycling solutions. Our students feel passionately about sustainability and the environment and these are running themes in the topics they choose to explore in the more creative elements of our curriculum (such as Art and Drama).
We can therefore think of no better partner to support the exciting future of our Drama department and we are proud that our theatre will bear the Westbrook name. The new floor will be laid in the Westbrook Theatre over half term with the seating installed shortly afterwards however we still need more support in order to ensure the theatre is appropriately fitted out with a lighting rig, lighting and sound boards and lighting. See page 3 to find out how you could support us. @holyportcollege

FROM THE PE DEPARTMENT
DIXIT 4th February 2022
Monday saw a tight football fixture for our U14 boys against Park house. A good performance from the boys with some close chances. They were unlucky not to come away with the win. On Tuesday the year 8 girls made their first appearance at a Fives tournament. Travelling all the way to Highgate, the girls exceeded all expectations and represented Holyport in fantastic form. Team of the tournament went to Chloe Hughes and Jessica Hancock who won the Plate A tournament and the player of the tournament was Jesica Mohan, who alongside her partner did exceptionally well in the Cup tournament. Gaining new experiences and learning from new opportunities, the girls had a fantastic day.
The U14 boys saw a tough game against a strong opposition. The boys made it difficult for Cox Green to hold onto their lead and should be proud of their performances on the pitch. The U12 girls had two thrilling games on the Hockey field on Tuesday. A close match against Marist and a whopping 5-1 win against Charters. Show stopping performance from Abi Oyeneyin in goal, well done to all the girls.

FROM THE SIXTH FORM Oxbridge (and other Russell Group) success for Holyport once again Holyport College Sixth Form’s stated aim is to get students into the top and best universities in the UK and the rest of the world. Whilst not the be all and end all by any means, Oxbridge and the Russell Group acceptance is one benchmark by which we can measure this target. I am pleased to say that this year, like last, we have 4 students holding offers from Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
Alfie and Angelina both have offers from Oxford University – Alfie to study Law and Angelina to study Chinese. At Cambridge Jonathan has an offer to study Human Social Political Sciences (HSPS) and Poppy to study Behavioural Psychology. For a small school like Holyport – this is a phenomenal success rate and puts us alongside many of the independent schools. There has also been success at a lot of other Russell Group universities with offers at Exeter, LSE, UCL, Queen Mary, Liverpool, Manchester, York, Edinburgh, Durham, Glasgow and Warwick amongst many others. With the final UCAS form being sent off this week, I’d like to publicly thanks Mrs Yardley and the whole of the Sixth Form team for their support in the UCAS process this cycle so far and we now focus our attention to the current Lower Sixth. World Book Day
Thursday 3rd March This year, the College is celebrating World Book Day by asking all students and staff to dress up as a nostalgic character based on a book from their childhood. The best dressed student and best dressed staff member will each win a prize. Boarders are reminded to bring their World Book Day costume back to school with them after the half term break. Don’t forget to bring in £1 to support World Book Day, the money raised this year will support the World Book Day organisation and the charity Book Aid International. Their mission is for everyone to have access to books – no matter where they’re born or how much money they have. The Lower Sixth Reading Ambassadors are also asking students and staff to bring in a book to donate. Books for donation can be placed in the box in the reception area as the Reading Ambassadors will be hosting a book sale for students on World Book Day to help raise money. More information about World Book Day will be given after the half term break. Happy Reading!

FROM THE LGBTQ+ SOCIETY
DIXIT 4th February 2022
Your Questions
Answered As you may be aware LGBTQ+ society has a box in reception for students to anonymously ask questions surrounding the LGBTQ+ community. With recent personal development lessons taking a focus on the community we have received many questions, so here are some of the answers: What does LGBTQ+ stand for? LGBTQ+ stands for multiple sexualities and gender identities within the community, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning, the + is used to include all other sexualities and gender identities.
Does it matter if you are undecided/how to decide your sexuality? No, it doesn’t matter. Ultimately, your sexuality and gender cannot be decided by anyone but yourself, but, you should know that you do not have to choose any labels and it is perfectly normal to change your sexuality or gender identity as many times as is necessary until you find one that feels right for you personally. If someone is transgender, would their passport change? It is definitely possible to change the gender listed in your passport though it can be quite a lengthy, complicated process. If a person were to change their legal name, this would change on their passport without affecting their listed gender as it would change for any person transgender or cisgender who legally changed their name. I found matching the flags and meanings of sexualities very difficult. To what extent does my confusion cause offence? There is absolutely no offence taken by confusion, especially when you are actively learning about different sexualities and gender identities. It is also completely okay to ask questions when you are confused about something as long as the questions come from a place of wanting to understand and not to undermine the LGBTQ+ community. Can you identify as more than just a gender, such as, age, race, height, weight? Gender is often associated with characteristics such as race, height and weight. However, when looking at identities like trans identities this is not the case. Gender is largely influenced by society, but this is not the same for age, race, height and weight. So, it is sex, which is biological and unchanging, that should be associated with age, race, height and weight in this context as they are also non-changing characteristics of identity. Please continue to leave any questions in the box in reception to be answered here again. Alternatively, come by LGBTQ+ Society during Wednesday co-curricular in Winton 1 or attend our upcoming drop-in session on Friday 11th February (more details coming soon). 15

Art Exhibition - Our Collaboration with The Clarendon Fine Art Gallery Every Holyport student was invited over the Christmas holidays to do an artistic response to a Winter Poem by Laura Salas, we chose our top ten entries and last weekend these winning students had their work exhibited in the beautiful Clarendon Fine Art Gallery, central Windsor. (We actually snuck a very small eleventh piece in too!). On Saturday these winning students, their families and friends were invited to a Champagne gathering at the gallery where they were able to view their work, and hear the gallery owner’s winning two pieces. These winning two pieces of work are being exhibited for a following week, they are still up this weekend, so do please go and take a look, they look amazing! What makes this exhibition so special! The Clarendon Fine Art Galleries and The White Wall galleries are a joint enterprise and they are the UK’s largest Art Gallery group, they have a phenomenal portfolio including original Salvador Dali’s and Picasso’s, to the more modern Mr Brainwash. The gallery is high calibre, so for our students to have their work nestled amongst Salvador Dali and other big names is something they can proudly chat about in the future, it can also feature in their portfolios. A huge thank you to the Windsor Clarendon Fine Art Gallery for enabling us to provide this opportunity to our students. All the students were considered winners, but the gallery manager Sam Cox did select two overall winning pieces to stay in the gallery for another week (one from the older age category, one for the younger). He struggled so much to choose, that we allowed him to select two runners up also! Winner older age category: Millie Preston Runner up; Emily Foster Winner Younger age Category: Tate Pickering Runner up: Cerys Watkins

FROM THE STUDENT LEADERS Herschel Head of House
Good Afternoon, our names are Joshua Gregory and Darcey Howe and we are both extremely proud and excited to be taking on the role of Heads of Herschel. We have both been aspiring members of this community for several years and feel very grateful to now be in the position to make the changes that we think will be beneficial. As Heads of Herschel, we want to be able to make the boarding community more lively by incorporating more activities for students of all years. This will brighten the boarding atmosphere and make sure every member of boarding feels comfortable and happy in their home away from home. Secondly, we also want to ensure Hershel is an inclusive community where everyone feels like a valued member. To do this we want to introduce competitions and activities where not only sport is showcased but also other talents such as Drama and Music. We are looking forward to working towards these goals together and hope you will work with us to achieve them.
Milton Head of House
Good afternoon, our names are Hannah and Molly. We are the new Milton day and boarding Heads of House. We are really excited about this new opportunity and are very thankful to have been selected by the house for these roles. Between the both of us we aim to bring more integration between year groups and give students new opportunities to widen their horizons. We aim to start having more house activities that are based on music, drama and art, not just sport as we understand sport isn’t for everyone. In boarding we want to create more ‘sisterly’ bonds between year groups, including more later evening activities for years 11-13. We want to give opportunities to fundraise for the house for charity and to invest in more activities for the boarding environment. We are both very excited to introduce our plans at Holyport with our ideas only being the start. We want to ensure Milton stays the best house to be in. We are looking forward to seeing Milton grow over the next year! 22

FROM THE STUDENT LEADERS Fawcett Head of House
Hello, we are Elliot Tomkins and Amelie Brindle, and are new the day and boarding Head of House for Fawcett. With one of us being a boarder for over 3 years and the other a new day student in 6th form, the combination of someone with familiar with Holyport and someone with a new perspective on the school, we see this working extremely well in improving both day and boarding experiences. We hope to introduce and share the idea of a scheme called PPE, this is students and teachers’ Personal Positive Environment. These plans should help aid the improvement of mental and physical well-being throughout education and should give everyone the tools to improve their experience at Holyport. This plan aims to focus on the individuals, and then improve the wider community of the school as a whole. We would like the gap between teachers and students to be a lot smaller and create an environment where students aren’t scared to voice their opinions. Also, one of the things Amelie loved about boarding was the close-knit bonds between year groups. We want to continue to promote these relationships within our two years in this position. Our first project for this issue is to introduce more inter-year activities, with the Arts being an important part of the school for us. We are both excited to begin with our changes at Holyport and we want to leave our mark upon the Holyport community. These plans above are just the start.
Brunel Head of House Hi, we’re Elliot and Ollie, the Heads of House for Brunel. Our joint intention for Brunel house is to create a more unified environment between our students and teachers, and instill a greater community within our school. The way we aim to do this is by running more student-led charity events, for example raising awareness for teen and adolescent mental health, as we believe that it is an important cause following the difficult past two years we have had with the pandemic. As an example, we would like to set up events such as a charity football match to raise money for Young Minds charity. Another one of our ideas for bringing our community closer together, is reintroducing inter-house events, such as inter-house sports competitions or chess tournaments, whilst also coming up with new ideas such as inter-house music competitions, where we could perhaps set up a concert. The two of us are extremely passionate about music, and we both want to get as many students involved with music as possible. We hope that by doing this, we would make the variety of competitions more inclusive for all students, as there is a general theme of ‘sport’ for competitions, which excludes many pupils at schools throughout the country. We hope to be a friendly face to all students in the house, improve our intrahouse connections and meet our students' needs to the best of our abilities; even if this is simply by taking a moment of our time to listen to how their day is going and implementing improvements they think would be beneficial. Listening to your student body is the top of our priority and we believe this to be the key to having lasting and effective improvement in our school. The two of us joined this school back in 2018 as borders; throughout this time we spent a lot of our time together in our daily school lives and in boarding, where we shared a room together for the majority of year 11, strengthening our bond. We believe that our joint experience and knowledge of the school is what Brunel needs to reach its fullest potential, and we hope to create and leave lasting benefits for students to come. 23
