MISSION We seek to create a unique communion of joy among students, their families, and our faculty and staff, in the context of a pre-eminent pre-K2 through 12th grade Catholic college preparatory school. We want to prepare our students for a lifetime of happiness by inculcating in them three foundational virtues. First, we want them to have a deep and abiding faith in God’s blessings and love for them. Second, we want them to exercise prudence – the ability to make good decisions for the rest of their lives – by obtaining a rigorous academic foundation, accompanied by the use of their own powers of reason. Finally, we want them to embody magnanimity – a greatness of character and of soul - such that they may go through life with a spirit of courage, a spirit of joy, a spirit of kindness, and a spirit of generosity.

VISION We strive to be the preeminent pre-K2 through 12th grade Catholic college preparatory school in the country, graduating young men and women who personify the Portrait of the Holy Spirit Prep Graduate (page 20). 3

A Message from the Board Chair and Head of School

We are delighted to present you with the 2013-14 Annual Report for Holy Spirit Prep. Since we stepped into our roles as Board Chair and Head of School, it was clear that our community wanted us to communicate our funding areas through an annual report. As stewards of the financial resources and gifts our community has entrusted to us, we share this report with you. One of the most rewarding aspects of serving in our roles is watching the commitment of our entire community — families, faculty and staff, board members, and alumni — to advance and support the school’s mission of forming our children into faithful, prudent, and magnanimous young men and women poised for a lifetime of happiness. We are blessed with a supportive community. We see it at the incredible turnout at events like our Family Fun Run and Picnic and at home football games. We see it each year when 100% of our faculty and staff contribute to the Annual Fund. Our annual program of giving is still young, and we look to build on our community’s support in those giving opportunities. At most independent schools, for example, the annual fund comprises 8-10% of school revenue. Our annual fund, still young, comprises just 3% of our annual revenue, and we aim to raise that to align with our independent school peers. It is our hope that this report be a stewardship tool for our community: providing a picture of our funding areas, recognizing those who have supported our institution with their own resources, and sharing key funding goals for Holy Spirit Prep in the years ahead. We are a community that cares deeply about our mission of forming the whole student — heart, body, mind, and soul — and we hope you will join us as we continue to build our giving program over the coming years.

Yours in service,

Joann G. Jones Kyle M. Pietrantonio Board Chair Head of School

Annual Fund The Annual Fund is a financial gift the school asks the entire Holy Spirit Prep community to make each year above the regular costs of tuition. At nearly all private schools, tuition only partially covers the costs of education; the remainder customarily consists of endowments, grants, and private donations. At Holy Spirit Prep in 2013-14, tuition covered only 66.4% of the school’s operating expenses. As a keystone of support for Holy Spirit Prep, the Annual Fund helps close this gap, reducing the time we spend fundraising, and strengthening our capability and capacity to provide the highest quality Catholic education for all of our students.

A gift to the Annual Fund is the primary gift your family can give to HSP each year in support of our communion of effort to educate our children. Our Annual Fund is young and currently accounts for approximately 3% of HSP’s annual revenue, which lags that of our peers. As we grow, we need to increase this level of giving to an average of 8-10%, a normal range for independent schools, so that we can continue to thrive and achieve greater financial stability. The Annual Fund is necessary to support our day-to-day operating expenses. It allows us to respond to immediate needs and make improvements that directly benefit all students during the year in which the gift is made. Annual Fund donations are tax deductible.

At Holy Spirit Prep in 2013-14, tuition covered only 66.4% of the school’s operating expenses.

Spring Gala and the Teachers’ Continuing Education Fund As a school community, we hold the professional development of our faculty in high esteem. We pride ourselves on the quality of our teachers, many of whom are active practitioners and contributors to their respective academic fields, and encourage them in their professional development. Through the generous support of our parents and benefactors, the school has established the Teachers’ Continuing Education Fund (TCEF), which financially enables our faculty and staff to work each year towards their professional goals at Holy Spirit Prep. The principal fundraising event is the annual Spring Gala, an evening of fellowship, auctions, and fundraising. All funds raised from the Gala are directed towards the Teachers’ Continuing Education Fund. The direct beneficiaries of our teachers’ continual growth and development are the students they teach, instructed in their courses by faculty members who are at the front of and often active practitioners in their respective academic field. The incredible support our community has given to the Spring Gala and the TCEF has enabled HSP to develop an additional teacher fund. In addition to the TCEF, proceeds from future Galas will benefit a new teacher tuition assistance fund. This new fund provides tuition assistance to the children of our teachers, and will be an important step in retaining our excellent faculty and staff for years to come.

The Cura Personalis Awards The Cura Personalis Award honor those teachers who have served at HSP for at least five years and who, in that time, have had a significant positive impact on students, parents, and colleagues, and supported HSP’s Catholic identity. Among a team of dedicated and passionate faculty, the three winners of this year’s award have demonstrated a consistent witness to the mission of HSP over their long tenure at HSP and well deserve the honor of being named the inaugural winners of this award.

The Trinitas Giving Society Georgia GOAL Scholarship The Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program is one of a number of student scholarship organizations in the state of Georgia permitting Georgia state taxpayers and certain businesses to redirect state income taxes to scholarships. These scholarships are granted to students in public schools who wish to attend private school. Holy Spirit Prep partners with the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program to provide scholarships to incoming students. Partnering with the GOAL has allowed Holy Spirit Prep to admit 40 incredible students who would otherwise not be able to afford the whole cost of tuition. Georgia law permits unused funds to be allocated to future years for any GOAL recipient attending Holy Spirit Prep, appropriately budgeting scholarships for the life of a student.

The Trinitas Giving Society was established in 2013-14 to recognize the annual generosity of those who support Holy Spirit Prep across a range of giving priorities. These priorities are reconsidered each year by the school’s administration and board of directors. For its inaugural year, the school determined its giving priorities to be: • Annual Fund • Teachers’ Continuing Education Fund, supported by the Spring Gala • Georgia GOAL Scholarship Those benefactors who made gifts to all three giving priorities were recognized as members of the Trinitas Giving Society. Financial Aid

14

Providing financial assistance is an important element of Holy Spirit Preparatory School’s mission as we seek to help those within our communion who cannot afford full tuition, but who are valuable members of our school. This assistance in turn benefits all students.

FINANCIAL AID

As an independent Catholic school, Holy Spirit Prep does not have access to tuition assistance funding from the Archdiocese of Atlanta. We meet tuition assistance needs from donations, the Georgia GOAL Scholarship, and our operating income. As stewards of the finite pool of monies made available for tuition assistance, Holy Spirit Prep has to ensure that assistance is targeted to the families with the greatest need.

At the end of the 2013-14 season, Cougar football announced it would return to Georgia Independent School Association league.

Our Lower School basketball players compete in Atlanta’s Catholic Metro League.

Our varsity boys won their GISA 1AAA region tournament for the 4th year in a row and advanced through the state tournament only to fall to the reigning state champions.

Varsity girls soccer play their annual Pink games, raising money for St. Joseph’s Mercy Care services.

Our varsity cheerleaders mentor our Preschool and Lower School cheerleaders.

THE ARTS

The fall play is one of three major performances at the Upper School, alongside the spring musical and Summer Stock, which invites alumni back to stage a show each June.

In addition to school plays and art shows, the Lower School seeks to integrate the arts into the regular curriculum, like the annual 3rd grade Wax Museum, a study of famous Americans brought to life through dramatic recreations.

The newly-inducted members of the 2013 National Art Honor Society.

This year’s spring musical was The Secret Garden, outstandingly performed by an ensemble of students from 7th-12th grade.

Holy Spirit Prep Daily Prayer We pray in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Thank you Lord for this day. Thank you for the blessings you give us. Thank you for making each one of us in your image. Thank you for the special blessing of our families. Help us to remember that you love us. Help us to remember that you have a special place in your heart for us. Help us to remember that our school is a communion of souls destined for joy. Help us to remember that this communion is unique and precious. Fill us with a faith that will accompany us. Fill us with a faith that will encourage us. Fill us with a faith that will inspire us. Fill us with a faith that will console us. Grant us magnanimity, a greatness of soul, so that all the other virtues we might seek to acquire will blossom. Grant us wisdom; and prudence, so that we may make good decisions for the rest of our lives. Grant us the development of heart, mind, body and soul such that we might excel in your plan for our lives. And grant that we may all seek communion with you and with one another. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
