01 Living With The Rising Tides Type: Education Location: Kingston Upon Hull, UK Scheme: Mixed Use Complex

Homayoun Javidrad | U1265808

The wheels have been set in motion. During the past century, the global warming has prompted a rapid acceleration in the sea level rise. The delay in response will bring severe consequences which in particular, will result in the coastal cities to fall victims to the gradual coastal erosion and the coast lines to retreat further inland. Moreover, it will cause the loss of billions of pounds in property damage, but most importantly the potential loss of lives, as it has been the case many times In the past. There is an urgent call for a large scale strategy to tackle this issue and get ahead before it is too late. Homayoun Javidrad | U1265808

This project envisions a city formed from a network of islands that have survived the flood and linked together through innovative design to create the next generation of resilient cities. This project will explore how one such link can be created between two islands. The new city will create a new model for city design and can be adjusted to apply to all cities around the world. This new design language born out of necessity, will give birth to a city that will acknowledge and respect the nature’s elements. It will coexist with the ocean rather than oppose it, becomes a part of it rather than separating from it. Homayoun Javidrad | U1265808

Initial form mimicking the site boundary

Form pushed back at the south, connecting the marina to the River Hull

Form hollowed in the middle, allowing natural light to reach the centre of the site, as well as creating a central focal point

Form pulled up to create open public space with free and unrestricted movement

form manipulated to reduce the dominance of the large mass as well as increasing light penetration to the interiors

spiral form stretched in north and east to improve connection between the city centre and the east of the River Hull

ramps created to movement to and

Form punctured through in various strategic point, creating light wells, as well as community gathering spaces

towers raised through the form creating optimum space for vertical farming spaces to capture as much sun light as possible

improve public from the site

Body & Mind

Strategically located at the entrance of the river hull which allows water access to the rest of the city. It will also connect the river Hull to the marina. The project takes place at present time in preparation of the worst case scenario, with the aim to be operational before the +2.0° temperature rise, therefore the inhabitants can mark the beginning of life after Hull is flooded.

The factory space will specialise in producing modular, prefabricated building components to be shipped throughout the islands created by the sea level rise in Hull, to be used in the construction of the network of islands creating a web network of land mass which interconnect and eventually lead to Hull’s city centre. This method will take use the sea level rise as an advantage to transport the good within the city as well as export to other locations

Project Summary The brief involves the re-planning and adaptation of the ground and first floors to accommodate a combined and consolidated One-Stop-Shop for Council services, Public Library and Community Learning provision. It is also proposed that the first floor is extended into the double height space at the south end of the Market Hall to form a larger footprint to accommodate the Public Library and Community Learning facilities. The project does not involve any works to the Borough Theatre itself, however it does involve improving both front and back of house access. The brief also involves making better use of the large Basement.

Homayoun Javidrad | U1265808

Project Summary The proposals make use of land already developed as a commercial laundry and associated vehicle parking and provides 277 en-suite studio bedrooms with compact kitchens for self-catering, in a variety of sizes to cater to a broader studio base. By design the proposed accommodation is highly sustainable with significantly reduced consumption of energy and water. Two similar schemes have both been accredited to a BREEAM ‘outstanding’ rating, and that is proposed for this scheme. The design principles facilitate the construction process by extensive use of off-site manufacture. A basic objective of the scheme is to create a highly sustainable place for students to live, study and relax.
