COMPETITION
SCARECROW INVASION BIGGER THAN EVER BEFORE The Barossa community has embraced the 2019 Barossa Vintage Festival Scarecrow program like never before, with a record 145 scarecrows registered. At the official close of registrations last week, Festival Director Jenny O’Brien said she was totally overwhelmed by the response to the scarecrow program with the number of registrations doubling that of 2017. “We were aiming high this year to increase the community participation in the scarecrow competition, but we certainly didn’t expect to see 145 scarecrows registered,” she said. “We talk about how the Festival is run by the community, for the community, and the enthusiasm and interest with the scarecrow program is testament to the community’s love and sense of ownership of the Vintage Festival. Jenny acknowledged the support of the Scarecrow Program sponsors, Homburg Real Estate, Barossa Herald, Tim Smith Wines and the Scarecrow committee who have worked tirelessly to promote the program. As well as so many of our local businesses coming on board and providing some incredible prizes for the various Scarecrow category winners and the People’s Choice winner.
“Successful scarecrow making workshops convened by the Barossa Regional Gallery and Nuriootpa Mitre 10 also helped raise the awareness of this creative community program,” said Jenny. “There really has been a groundswell of support this year with schools, community groups, businesses and even entire towns coming together to create their own scarecrow masterpiece.” And as the scarecrows start popping up across the region, you can guarantee come April when all 145 scarecrows are displayed, it’s going to be a huge talking point and attraction for locals and tourists alike. “We’re excited to see the creativity of the community on display and the stories behind the scarecrow creations,” said Jenny.
