FROM THE EDITOR > People unfamiliar with southern Spain no doubt permit themselves a bemused smirk when they hear us start talking excitedly about revamping our outdoor living areas when the Christmas decorations have barely been put away for another year. But it’s still only February, they titter, hunched up in front of the fireplace in their thermal underwear, quilted jackets and woollen beanies. Back on the Mediterranean we are enjoying glorious sunshine as we contentedly settle into a comfy cane chair on a restaurant terrace beside the sea with a glass of Ribera del Duero. Okay, a bit of hyperbolic licence there. A chill wind can add a touch of crispness to the Costa air during the winter months, and it does actually rain sometimes, but generally we are extremely privileged to enjoy mild weather conditions at this time of the year, and there is certainly nothing weird about making plans to give our home’s outdoor spaces a makeover – maybe even a full-blown refurbishment if it’s been a while. Whatever those plans entail, in our comprehensive outdoor living section this issue we cover all the angles… From furniture with a natural look and soothing poolside settings to chic shade protection from the sun during the day, and avant-garde fire pits and mood lighting for when the temperature does dip in the evenings. Away from the home, we visit two enchanting Spanish hotels, in Palma and Alicante, that would be ideal for a spring getaway; travel in a car of the future, the self-driving Mercedes F 015 saloon (with its “private retreating space”); and return via Madrid, where three top Costa del Sol chefs dazzled the Madrid Fusión culinary summit with their gourmet creations… based on sturgeon, baby goat and liquid nitrogen, respectively. Finally, we review one of Spain’s premier showcases of décor and design, the “See You In Valencia” exhibition (incorporating Hábitat Valencia), where we were pleased to note an overriding sense of optimism among exhibitors and visitors. All of which augurs well for a positive 2015 for the industry – and specifically for our pleasurably balmy home base, the Costa del Sol.

The Great Outdoors Due to the privileged climate we enjoy in southern Spain and Gibraltar, we are lucky enough to be able to enjoy an outdoor life that many people in the rest of Europe can only envy. As we are approaching the summer months, it is certainly the right time to start thinking about improving our outdoor living spaces, as we will be spending a fair bit of time out there. It is not just outdoor furniture items that we need to think about, however, but also lighting, barbecues, fire pits, swimming pools, landscaping, decking and much more. It was not so long ago when outdoor furniture was generally large and cumbersome, but now the trend has steered towards more lightweight furniture, thus making it easier to move items around and to store them away. They are now made of more durable materials and come in a more exciting array of styles and colours.

Divine Al Fresco Dining For outdoor furniture it is always worthwhile to invest in quality so that it can endure the elements thrown at it during the summer months. These days you can buy wooden furniture that not only looks sophisticated – blending perfectly into its environment – but which is also highly weather resistant and much more lightweight than ever before.

The Split and Curve dining set has a very organic appearance. The Yshaped legs of the Split table are a charming characteristic and the uneven cut of the wood on the table-top gives a great natural look. The Curve chairs are durable, weather-proof and comfortable. www.gloster.com

Delectable Decking Decking not only looks natural in your garden or terrace but it is also very low maintenance, especially if it is made of a composite material. Many people believe that the appearance of wooden decking (whether it is 100 per cent wood or a composite) makes a garden more peaceful and serene for relaxation, as patios can be quite cold and unwelcoming. You can now buy non-slip decking that is highly weather resistant and ecologically friendly – ideal around a pool or on a terrace. Available from Concept Building in Pol. For many years the process of keeping your pool sparkling clean and bacteria-free was based on the same technology. Now, new breakthroughs are making chemicals a thing of the past, and allergy-free healthy swimming has become a reality. Also, with expert advice, design and know-how existing pools can be transformed and modernised, and with our experience safety systems are always paramount. The swimming pool is an integral part of our way of life in Marbella, where Europe’s warmest climate has made this the foremost centre of pools in Europe. During the long summer months we spend a large part of our daily life outside, on terraces and sundecks surrounding beautiful blue swimming pools that sparkle invitingly in the Mediterranean sun. A wide variety of styles, sizes and features has evolved over the years to enliven and personalise the pools up and down the Costa del Sol. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

The Need for a Clean Pool

The Need for a Clean Pool

Many of the reasons why our pools require constant care come from their surroundings – earth, dust and leaves blown in from the garden, sand and other particles deposited from the air, algae carried over from plant-life – and from our bodies… protective oils, sun creams, etc. To keep this under control and the water in tip-top condition, the pool needs to be wellmaintained and looked after. The main principle behind keeping such a body of water crystal-clear and clean is the filtration equipment. The installed equipment is responsible for the removal of any contaminants that can change the chemical balance of the water and reduce its clarity and quality. Naturally, apart from the filtration system it is important that any organic

material floating in the pool should be removed from the pool regularly, and for those who use it to shower before and after swimming. Until recently, treatment of the water has been based upon the use of chemicals. Chlorine and bromine-based chemicals are introduced into the water that dissolve and destroy bacteria and harmful chloramines but – as they in turn can affect the chemical composition of the water – it is important to maintain a balance between the alkalinity (80-120 ppm) and calcium (200-400 ppm) levels in the pool. This does not require a PHD in science; however, maintaining those levels at a constant is difficult and in reality many pools are overdosed with chemicals which are introduced into the water and can leave swimmers with eye and skin irritations. Not to mention the strong unpleasant smells!

A New Generation of Water Treatment

Pool Safety

Latest developments have converted water treatment from a guessing game of amateur science into a fully controlled and balanced process, thanks to new water filtration systems that have automated sensors and controls which keep a constant check and dose the water as and when required, leaving the guessing to others. The new systems make chemicals obsolete, and in the process can eliminate potential problems such as allergic reactions, sore eyes and green bikinis and hair! Instead, the non-chemical, chlorine-free process applies ionisation technology to produce clean, clear and above all healthy water.

None of us want any accidents to happen and we always think that when it does it will be others and not to our loved ones. The results of recent surveys show children between the ages of one and four are most at risk for drowning and unfortunately our supervision can be distracted at times. Atlas Pools is therefore constantly researching and testing available products, from pool fencing to several different types of preventative alarm systems and covers which we hope will make your pool areas as safe and comfortable as possible for all the family.

Are We Sitting Comfortably‌? Your living room is usually the most visited area where you, family and friends SOCIALISE and relax, making it an important living space. Chairs and sofas are key to any living room or reception area so they not only need to be stylish but also comfortable.

The Ploum range by Ligne Roset is the jewel of a great deal of research into the science of comfort. The result is a special combination of two materials: a stretchable covering and ultra-soft foam. The combination of stretchable covers and ultra-soft foam together with the large dimensions of a Ploum sofa offers the ultimate in relaxation, allowing you to lounge on it by either sitting, stretching out or even lying down. www.ligneroset.com

The Mingle sofa was designed 80 years ago by architect Flemming Lassen, who wanted to create a sofa as a conversational piece but which also offered comfort, encouraging people to stay seated and talk together for hours. The armrests were designed to encircle the sitters, giving the feeling of intimacy and cosiness. www.bylassen.com

The Toward collection is the result of the work of Danish architect Anne Boysen and Erik Jørgensen. Anne Boysen was inspired by contemporary monochrome colour trends, the sensuous detail of craftsmanship and developing a creative and playful design. Toward comes in four different colour schemes with solid brass or aluminium feet. www.erik-joergensen.com

The ADD collection by La Palma is an indoor modular system equipped with small tables at differing heights. The sofas can be placed in many different ways to suit the shape and layout of the room. www.lapalma.it

All Things Bright And Beautiful We often shy away when it comes to bright colours for our sofas and chairs, but strong colours can give a room the pizzazz it has been yearning for.

The NUBE armchair by Stua combines flat parallel surfaces on the exterior of the chair with curves within its interior to perfectly surround the body, making the sitter feel like they are nestled into the chair. The use of two colours in the upholstery gives the armchair vibrancy and enhances its already very contemporary look. www.stua.com

Verner Panton wanted to design furniture “that grows up out of the floor – to turn the furniture into something organic and never with four legs”. For the System 123 lounge chairs, Verpan used foam rubber for enhanced sitting comfort and to ensure a tight and even upholstering. The green chair is made out of fabric and the brown chair, leather. www.verpan.com

The Green Evolution Maintaining a design balance between nature and the necessities of life By Alia Babapulle

This edition of the magazine sees me bringing you something about one of the wonderful plants which Mother Nature has given us, bamboo. I am going to feature a green school built in bamboo, in Bali, called – aptly – the Green School. More of that later… This incredible plant is water-resistant, and fungus and mould-proof when stored and treated correctly after cutting. Storing it in the shade to dry ensures

68

that no insects can get into the shoots. It is one of the fastest growing plants in the world, sometimes growing 35 inches (89 centimetres) in a day, and is incredibly versatile. Giant bamboo is the largest member of the grass family. Bamboo can be arched, and manipulated into all sorts of shapes: for example, growing it in a pre-made shape, etc. – the list is really endless. The price is also much lower than for conventional woods; and, to top it all, bamboo is delicious.

Bamboo Beauty at Green School

l

I came across this wonderful school purely by chance. I was looking for bamboos, of which there are many, and just look at this! It’s made completely out of bamboo, and has been built taking into consideration the way the indigenous people have made their buildings for generations, which is always the best way. The bridge is a masterpiece of beauty and the school is airy and filled with light. They teach pupils the normal curriculum but also how to respect and look after nature, and the children look very happy and content. I would love to have been schooled there. The Green School in Bali (Indonesia) is giving its students a natural, holistic and student-centred education in one of the most amazing environments on the planet. The U.S. Green Building Council’s Centre for Green Schools awarded Green School the “2012 Greenest School on Earth“ award. The Green School was conceived by its founders in 2006 following their exit from the jewellery business. The school opened in September 2008 with 90

students and a tailor-made campus that had only recently emerged from the jungle and rice fields. Since then it has grown physically and in student numbers. The Green School combines the talent of several very diversely gifted individuals. Its founders, John and Cynthia Hardy, have been residents in Bali for more than 30 years and recognised a unique opportunity to create something truly inspiring and outside the structural, conceptual and physical limitations of many traditional schools. The location is on a site in an undeveloped and natural area of gentle jungle, bisected by the Ayung River, which makes it an ideal place for students to connect with nature. The site is farmed and landscaped to make it productive while being safe and secure. The whole school has grown in leaps and bounds, with many personalities such as Dr. Jane Goodall and Ban Ki Mun visiting and showing great interest. There is so much more to see, so please take time to check out their site: www.greenschool.org

Positive Market Resurgence in Valencia More than 1,000 exhibitors showcased their premium products and services during Spain’s pacesetting See You In Valencia exhibition in February. The exhibition brought together three distinctive fairs – Cevisama (ceramics, bathrooms and natural stone), Habitat (furniture, lighting, kitchens and home textiles) and Maderalia Selection (materials and solutions for interior design) – as well as a series of city-based

exhibitions, tributes, showrooms, conferences, presentations and architecture tours. Cevisama 2015 focused on innovative uses of ceramics materials, with the main theme of “synergies”; Hábitat Valencia highlighted a diverse and high-end range of both national and international trends; and Maderalia featured comprehensive specialist options for interiors. A vibrant dynamic was the main focus at Maison & Objet in January, as the premier décor and design show in Paris celebrated its 20th anniversary. Created 20 years ago to “open the doors to new market and business opportunities for designers, craftspeople, manufacturers, brands and distributors”, the first M&O exhibition of 2015 centred on the theme “Make” in its three trends areas. “Laissez-faire is no longer the zeitgeist,” said the organisers. “Everyone wants to regain control. Home-made and hand-made are drawing an increasing number of devotees. Traditional forms of savoir-faire are once again a source of value for manufactures objects.”

The exhibition also included a tribute to the global approach embraced by its designer of the year for January, Nendo (Oki Sato): held a competition with its six “Talents à la Carte” to determine which of them would represent Mexico at the premiere of Maison & Objets Americas in Miami Beach from 12 to 15 May (Studio davidpompa won, with over 4,000 Facebook likes); and previewed Maison & Object Asia, to be held in Singapore from 10 to 13 March. www.maison-objet.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Overlooking the horizon this exceptional villa almost seems to touch heaven

Heavenly Haven in La Zagaleta

Located in one of Europe’s most exclusive residential estates, Heaven 11 is a stunning villa extending over 2,000 square metres of built area on an exquisitely landscaped plot. The property is, in fact, one of the select few to sit on La Zagaleta’s highly desirable “top ridge”, thus affording magnificent panoramic views over the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and northern Africa. 78

The use of high ceilings, huge windows, clean lines, open spaces and contemporary design, combined with the finest materials and the villa’s elevated position, enables its occupants to “feel” the breathtaking views and be embraced by the naturally lit spaces – which extend seamlessly onto the terraces to provide a fully open indooroutdoor living area. Modern and clean architectural lines further enhance this sense of timeless space, relaxation and calm. The home has been designed to highlight the amplitude and lightness of the interior architecture structures. Everything can be appreciated as a whole, with no visual barriers and well-differentiated details outlining the rooms and doors and revealing the beauty of the views and garden. The dining room is a bright and contemporary space, a natural extension to the living area that provides wonderful views over the coast in what truly is a memorable daily dining experience. The state-of-the-art 55 square metre kitchen, fully equipped with the latest domotic home automation, is accessed from the living area and structured around the cooking area – which provides even more of a sensation of light and space. Directly in front of the kitchen, the dining-living room is furnished with ultra-comfortable sofas and chairs as well as an outside dining table – all undercover to provide protection from the sun. The large master bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and dressing room with sea and mountain views. The master bathroom is both spacious and refreshingly contemporary, with a double-ended bath, double sinks and a large walk-in double shower. Clean lines, contrasting stainless steel, the finest marble, hand-carved stone, and floorto-ceiling windows combine to create a bathroom that helps get the day off to the best start possible. There are also covered and open terraces outside all the bedrooms, the dining room, the kitchen, the ground floor bar and the entertainment areas. An indoor pool features a raised infinity design, and an interior bar is the focal point of the entertainment and leisure area. Located next to the indoor pool is a state-of-the-art 75 square metre fitness centre equipped with a range of premier aerobics machines and freeweights, plus an exercise floor for dance, yoga, pilates, stretching and other exercises. Designed by a leading fitness expert, this area can easily be customised to suit specific requirements and preferences. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

One of the most technologically advanced rooms within the villa is the sound and light room. The special shape and ceiling of the room has been designed to provide superior acoustics, ideal for friends and family to watch sporting events or movies. The room is also professionally sound-proofed and designed for use with either the latest super-sized 4k Ultra HD LCD TVs or cinema quality HD projectors. A private wine cellar – placed midway between the ground and first floors – doubles as a place to store and maintain valuable wines as well as a visually attractive feature with its glass sides. Another highlight of the villa is its parking facilities, with a dual entrance on the ground and first floors with ample space to house six cars. In addition, there is space for five more cars in front of the main entrance, plus four in a car port at the side of the villa. Landscaping is an integral part of the whole design process. Heaven 11’s garden is a haven for peace and contemplation, and at the same time a space to enjoy the outdoors – a cosy area full of expressiveness and subtlety. The use of continu-

80

ous green masses gives the garden an almost sculptural character, as if it were created of a single piece, in perfect union with the villa’s architecture – a garden with soul and a true oasis. The latest home automation system will be used, programmed to the owner’s special tastes. It will be easy to use and will work both remotely and through an iPhone, iPad, Android or remote device. It will connect such home features as lighting, heating, air-conditioning, music, blinds and entrance gates – thus quickly connecting multiple areas of the villa. Heaven 11 is currently under construction and is available for sale. Is the Costa del Sol Returning to an Off-Plan Market?

By Sean Woolley

If you’re partial to reading the overseas press, you could be forgiven for thinking that the only cranes on the Costa del Sol are those that litter the skyline from days gone by when the building boom came to an abrupt halt, leaving developers bankrupt and building sites deserted. While there are indeed a handful of unsightly examples of the madness of the last construction frenzy, what’s now emerging are the green shoots of a recovery in the development of new, quality housing here on the Coast. Sensing that the appetite for Spanish property is returning from foreign buyers, developers who had previously downed tools at the first whiff of recession, or those who simply land-banked hoping for better times to come, are now starting to build again. Wherever you go along the Costal del Sol, you will see land being prepared by earth-moving machines, sales offices being erected on previously empty plots of land, and the cranes finally moving in again. But hang on a minute! Let’s just take stock. I’ve just checked the agents’ shared database of properties and found that there are almost 20,000 resale properties advertised for sale in the area. This indicates that there must surely still be an over-supply of stock. So what hope do these developers realistically have of shifting their off-plan properties when faced with this huge amount of competition? The painful truth for the vendors of those 20,000 resales out there is that most buyers prefer to buy something new. Something shiny, clean and untainted. We are all suckers for a seductive show home. The three advantages that developers have are price, quality and marketing power. Let’s start with the issue of price. Bear in mind that a lot of developers have been sitting on their building plots since way before the recession kicked in, and some plots were even purchased for rock-bottom prices when the market

crashed. Developers are acutely aware of prices in neighbouring developments and areas, and so they ensure that their prices are more than competitive in today’s market. Developers are now able to build using the latest materials, kitting out their homes with modern kitchens, bathrooms and flooring. Therefore, when it comes to quality, the new developments will likely be more appealing than the vast majority of those 20,000 resales. The third major factor in favour of the developers is their marketing power and sales process. Using billboards, networks of agents and plenty of media advertising mean that these developments get noticed and stimulate plenty of interest from international buyers. The sales formula is simple: see the show home, look at the plans, select your unit, stand on the plot, imagine the view, sign the reservation. Done. No viewing of dodgy second-hand kitchens and bathrooms in near darkness, no screaming kids and barking dogs, no vendors to negotiate with, no vendors who can change their minds. Simple. But why would buyers wait two years when there’s so much stock available right now? Well, in most cases, buyers ARE prepared to wait. Remember, everyone who visits the Costa del Sol to look at property would LIKE to buy a place, but the vast majority don’t actually NEED to do so. Why not rent a nice place in the summer holidays for two years while they’re waiting for their perfect home to be built? They’ll probably save money in the long run anyway. I can only see a sustained and steady recovery in the Costa del Sol housing market, particularly in the key areas along the Coast. This recovery will be led by these new, off-plan opportunities. It’s absolutely vital that private vendors are aware of them. This is their new competition, whether they like it or not.

Garden Landscape >

Contemporary Gardening By Beatrice S. De Perlac

Descriptions such as minimalistic, clean lines, monochromatic, and contrast in colours and textures come to mind when explaining a “contemporary garden”. However, I would like to add another very relevant word that will soon inevitably be used when defining a contemporary garden – and that is “sustainable”. When asking a landscape gardener to design your garden you should insist that it also be intelligent and sustainable. This will definitely add extra value to your property and also allow you to save money on its maintenance. And what should be even more important is that you will be part of the trend towards positive change in mentality and bad habits. Questions you should ask your designer include: Are the plants chosen suitable for this climate and soil? Because you want to save money on chemicals to help them survive… Could the plants chosen be changed for plants that also give us fruit? Can we have our own veggies?

84

Can we have areas with sand and pebbles? Can we irrigate with rainwater? Can we use solar energy for the exterior lighting? Do we have an area for composting? This is extremely important, not only because of the money you save but also for the lush look your garden will have. Can we use the wood we prune for the fireplace? Are we planting close together plants that help each other, such as aromatics to keep bugs away and attract bees for pollinating? Can we have a water feature to attract birds? Adarve Gardens offers a free permaculture study of your new house and garden project, which at the least you will find interesting! Adarve Garden Design Studio Tel. New Vision… and Vertical Innovation

By Juan Pedro Sacedón from Doubleview

This spring a new outlet is being opened opposite the Marbella Club, the Marmorin Design Centre, and we invite readers to come and visit our showroom and studio. Doubleview takes care of consultation and project development for outdoor areas, with the construction of garden and “vegetative” architecture. In undertaking garden projects, we have access to the advice and services of other professionals, both within and outside the Marmorin Design Centre. Developing fountains and lighting, and even garden furniture, requires the vision of specialists – those who are experienced at working with the relevant techniques and materials. We consult with an expert in lighting, an electrical engineer, an interior decorator who advises us on the furniture and works with the top brands, and a specialist in flooring and natural materials, so we are able to provide the best service within the outlines of a specific project. We install irrigation systems and lighting integrated with domotic home automation systems, in a way that enables you to work with the garden from your own telephone.

86

Currently, the Acer Jardinería company exclusively develops its vertical garden system, helping us with the design and carrying out the work... on such projects as Dani García’s restaurant and the vertical garden at Muelle Uno in Málaga. Thanks to a revolutionary technique, we can cover any vertical surface with plants. This technique is based on the use of gabions of metallic mesh filled with a special type of moss that acts as a substratum. These gabions are erected on a fixed support that adapts to the surface which requires covering. Once the structure is erected, planting begins of the vertical garden using species specified in the design. The substratum’s features are such that optimum development of the plants is achieved and maintenance is minimal. The whole combination comprises an automatic programmable irrigation system that supplies the required water. You can see a display of this process in one of our designs at the showroom in the Marmorin Design Centre. Juan Pedro Sacedón is a garden and landscape designer at the Doubleview: Tel. A Convivial Setting for Luxury Treatments Belmon Salon. INTERVIEW WITH OWNERS, BELINDA AND MONIQUE.

Photos: David Toms Tell us something about your professional background and why you decided to work in this industry… We both knew at a young age that we wanted to be hairdressers. At 15, we were able to start at the academy for hairdressers in Holland, which was two days training at school and three days working in a salon. We each had our own hair salon in Holland and came to Spain 12 years ago. We did all of this at the same time, but didn’t know each other then. Six years ago we met whilst working in different places and then a year ago we decided to open our own salon together in San Pedro de Alcántara. When thinking up a name for our salon, we decided that it would be nice to combine the first three letters of our names, so “Belmon” was born!

With our experience and professionalism, also we can train and teach new hairdressers to become top stylists.

Tell us more about your services… and what are the basic principles behind your company? In addition to hair cut and colour we also offer hair treatments, like keratin treatment and the new plasma treatment, which gives volume, hydration and a beautiful shine, and is a perfect boost for any type of hair. We are specialists in different hair extensions, such as sticker and keratin extensions. We also work with a highly qualified beautician who is a specialist in manicure, pedicure, shellac and facials. For a full wedding package, including hair and make-up, we do home visits.

What are your thoughts on the new developments in San Pedro de Alcántara? San Pedro is growing. There are a lot of new shops and bars and a new boulevard. It is close to Marbella and Estepona, so it attracts more tourists every year and that is great for us as well. Our clients are residents and tourists, mostly people from northern European countries.

What do you most enjoy about your work and what is your vision for the company? We enjoy working with people advising them on colour, style and how to maintain it at home. Our aim is always for customers to leave our salon with a smile. We are working with professional products such as Revlon, Tigi and L’Oréal.

88

Do you have any plans for Belmon in 2015… special offers, expansion, new products? It will be a busy year. In March there is the Russian Film Festival in Marbella and we are responsible for the hair at the event for the whole week. We will visit several shows and courses in Madrid, Barcelona and London to stay up to date with latest trends, colours and treatments, and we are always on the look-out for new products, techniques and innovations for our salon.

And finally… Since we started in July 2014, we haven’t had a single moment of regret. We are very happy to have our own salon and we have a lot of ideas and plans for our business for the coming year. In the meantime, you can follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Hi-Tec Technology for Minimalist Living TD Sat & Sound. Interview with Tomas Davidsson from TD Sat & Sound and Wim de Vos from Genesis Technologies

Photos: David Toms Tomas, tell us more about how you set up TD Sat & Sound… I set up my company in 2006. My first customer was a famous footballer, Martin Dahlin, which was a great way to start the business! I soon decided to educate myself more about the market sector and learned about ISF, which stands for Imaging Science Foundation. This is a calibration technology to control the standard gamma adjustments, colour management systems and white balance options. It is an assessment of the light and layout of a room, as well as the precise configuration of the particular panel you own, so that you get a truly personalised optimal TV/projector experience, something that is impossible to achieve with even the most carefully calibrated of factory picture presets. It was on this course in 2007 where I met Wim, who was at the time an ISF representative and now runs Genesis Technologies. I then went on to do a course in THX, which is a seal of quality that shows that a product has passed rigorous tests for sound performance standards – and this then allowed me to do comprehensive cinema installations.

90

What are the benefits of having a smart home? Smart homes are what everyone is talking about. It is fantastic that you now have the ability to control a number of different functions in your home such as connecting the heating, security alarm or lights from one touchscreen interface on the wall or via your iPad, iPhone or Android phone when you are not even present in the home. The fact that there is no need for switches, wires for light fittings, remote controls, plugs or sockets means you can have a very clutter-free home that is much more aesthetically pleasing and offers you a cleaner way of living. Also, multi-room entertainment allows you to enjoy music and television anywhere in the home. Tell us more about the home cinemas that you install… A home cinema allows you to lose yourself, putting you into a “suspension of disbelief” – you literally feel you are in the film. We have been professionally trained to know exactly how to install the screen

MARCH APRIL 5

A speaker is built into the support leg of a flame heater tabletop.

and speakers in order that they are at the correct height, volume and calibration so that the sound and resolution is perfectly adjusted for the chemical and neurological process of suspension of disbelief, offering the ultimate viewing experience. You can basically have a home cinema that suits your specific needs and design requirements. For example, you can have customised seats, lighting and wall design. How do you combine design with technology? We can install speakers behind a wall, making them invisible, and we also build speakers discreetly into items of furniture. Invisible speakers together with home control are the largest growing area within our home sector. Decorative hanging objects can double-up as an omnidirectional speaker, evenly distributing sound around a room. This is ideal for restaurants and bars, as it does not take up any floor space and thus allows customers to sit however near or far away from a speaker that they prefer – the music will emit at the same level of volume in any part of the room. What do you enjoy about your work and what services do you offer? I love my work. I have always been interested in the latest technology - I can never get bored of it as it is evolving so quickly all the time. We install antennas, IP TV, multi-room sound systems and home control, as well as general repair of televisions - no job is too big or too small. I try to maintain a very high level of customer service, offering a wide spectrum of services from an installation of a telephone system or internet, all the way up to a multi-room and control home system. When having systems installed, you can sometimes be met by a number of different specialists for one installation, but with our company you just deal with me and I take you through the whole process, as well as afterwards when you may need technical support. As we are part of Control 4, a leading provider of personalised automation and control solutions, we have to ensure an optimum level of customer service.

Home control from your mobile phone

How much do you work with architects and interior designers? We work with them regularly but we would like to work with them even more so that homes are set up better for when someone decides to install a smart home facility. We also would like to educate architects and designers about the latest technology so that their clients know what they have available at their fingertips. We can install technology around an interior design hardly without interfering with the aesthetics of the design. If a reform or new build makes some allowances for a home control system at the start – with, say, a small storeroom where the central hub can be hidden away discreetly – a smart system can be installed quickly and very easily with very little disturbance to the house. If you do not have permission to install cables into the walls, what can you do? If a building is listed or there are complications in installing the cables, we can get around this by installing a Z-Wave system, which is a wireless technology that makes standard household products such as door locks, lights and thermostats “smart”. What options are there for outdoor entertainment systems? Now there are outdoor furniture items such as lights, tables and decorative items that can all have speakers built in. We can basically offer anything madeto-measure, combining any kind of material and design with technology. Stealth Acoustics have just launched their new Stealth Patio Theatre, which allows you to be able to enjoy a complete outdoor cinematic experience with large-format, ultra-bright, motorised LED screens that have an almost unlimited number of configurations and fully-customised systems that allow you to watch television without any problems of glare from the sun. Photos: David Packwood Tell us more about Cortidea and the collection you have in your showroom… Cortidea was established in 1995. It is situated in the Centro Idea commercial centre on the Fuengirola-Mijas road, where you can find a large selection of fabrics for curtains, upholstery and home furnishings. Cortidea also supplies quality interior wood blinds, vertical and roller blinds. Cortidea has been established for many years. What is the key to your success? Our mission is to create a company that specialises in supplying stylish, quality and affordable items. A company that makes its customers feel welcome and that provides an unparalleled and personal service you would only be able to receive from a smaller company. Our products are created to bring everyday luxury to our customers. We believe in offering quality at affordable prices. We love impeccable designs and workmanship, not traditional, just beautifully designed, simple and elegant. Timeless, but with individuality and style… Choosing curtains can be complex and difficult. It’s not like buying a TV or piece of furniture you can see and try, so it’s essential you receive qualified and experienced advice. In that respect, our satisfied and returning clients are our best guarantee. What can customers expect when visiting Cortidea? Our service philosophy is simple: we listen carefully to our clients’ needs, consult and collaborate in formulating and agreeing on the details, then create innovative and solutions. We offer made-to-measure curtains and re-upholstery work, all sorts of blinds, both for indoor and outdoor. Our commitment is to put our customers first. We believe in providing a personal and individual service that is delivered by our skilled and responsive team.

92

What do you enjoy most about working with fabrics? Working with different types of fabrics is challenging, interesting and motivating, and most importantly it’s not boring. You meet lots of interesting people and it gives me great satisfaction when our customers are completely satisfied. How do you see trends in fabrics developing in 2015? The trend for this season is timeless colour combinations using natural fibres such as linen, cotton and silk, combined with noble metal colours, bronze, copper, silver and gold. The trend seems to be more colourful this year, bright and vibrant colours compared with last year’s two-tone designs. In conclusion… Our goal is to set the highest standards in our industry for quality and service in everything we do. We specialise in creating unique, stylish and appealing designs, providing the best expertise and production… cost-effective solutions, dynamic creativity and attention to detail. Apart from the Scandinavian languages, we speak English, German and Spanish. Self-improvement is a passionate advocate of growth and learning. Learning is a personal commitment we make to ourselves to improve. Every item in our collection offers something special in terms of look and feel just for you. Located in a part of Palma that is swathed in venerable charm, the Hotel Cort is an intriguing link between the city’s chic cosmopolitanism and traditional allure. It is the ideal base for visitors seeking a haven away from the island’s ritzier beach resorts but still in the heart of a bustling epicentre of Mallorquín life. Opened in 2013, the hotel rises amidst the cobblestoned surroundings of Plaça Cort, a central plaza that is home to Palma’s Baroque-era town hall and a centuries-old olive tree that has become a natural meeting place for both locals and tourists. The sea is about 10 minutes away on foot and the nearest beach, Anima Beach Palma, a 15-minute walk. Like “an island within an island”, Hotel Cort comprises 14 serene and spacious suites and two double rooms, including the 70 square metre duplex Island Suite with living room, bedroom and private rooftop terrace; and such varied amenities as a private red wine bar and mini bar, fireplace and luxurious double shower (Duplex Suite) and private library (The Suite and Junior Suite). They were designed by self-styled “urban archaeologist” Lázaro Rosa-Violán,

whose framed maps, naked timber boards and cool splashes of ultra-marine hues are inspired by the nearby Mediterranean and Scandinavian maritime history – creating a homely yet indulgent ambience. His work is complemented by that of the architects, Vicente Alcover Ripoll and Luis Moranta Jaume. The 100-year-old building (formerly a bank) shares some of the same features as the nearby 17th-century town hall, including delicate stone mouldings around the window edges and elegant sandstone balconies. The restaurant offers Mallorquín-Mediterranean cuisine and an expansive terrace extending onto the plaza; while the hotel also has an Oyster Bar and Raw Bar with live cutting of Iberian cured ham, a Mezzanine Bar and 24-hour room service, as well as a rooftop pool with jacuzzi and sun-beds and in-room spa treatments and massages available on request – plus a boardroom with natural daylight overlooking the plaza. From classic island gem to majestic mainland jewel… Hospes Amérigo (like Hotel Cort on the previous pages) offers guests the opportunity of basking in a sumptuous past of Juliet balconies and arched neo-gothic windows. Located in the centre of the town, close to La Esplanada Avenue and El Postiguet beach, the grand façade of Hospes Amérigo gives a hint of its previous 19th century life as a convent, with salvaged stones forming parts of the walls on each floor and wrought-iron work surrounding the balcony above a modern, light-filled lobby of polished marble. The 80 rooms and one suite are decorated with a warm and cosy palette of neutral colours and simple textures, and guests can also enjoy the pleasures of a roof terrace with striking views of Alicante’s castle, a heated pool, dinner under the stars or a natural treatment in the spa. A Revolution in Luxury Motion

Open Road HL38.indd 98

27/02/15 13:29

Not so long ago it would have seemed like something out of a science fiction movie, but the era of self-driving cars on our roads is much closer to reality than a fantasy script. Mercedes is the latest marque manufacturer to enter the intriguing world of “self-propelled” and “self-reliant” cars, unveiling its F 015 luxury sedan at the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. According to Mercedes, the focus is on demonstrating how the automobile is changing from a means of transportation to a “private retreating space”. The pivotal feature of the innovative, lounge-like interior concept is a variable seating system with four rotating lounge chairs that allow a face-to-face seat configuration. All four passengers can work, relax or communicate; and, in order to make getting in and out of the car easier, the electrically powered seats also swing outwards by 30 degrees as soon as the doors are opened. Another key aspect of the research vehicle is a continuous exchange of information between vehicle, passengers and the outside world, facilitated by

six display screens integrated into the instrument panel and the rear and side panels – thus converting the interior of the F 015 Luxury in Motion into a digital arena. Passengers can interact intuitively with the connected vehicle – which employs laser projection and LED displays and is electrically propelled – through gestures, eye-tracking or by touching the high-resolution screens. The F015 encapsulates Mercedes’ vision of a rapidly changing world, with the number of mega-cities with more than 10 million inhabitants expected to increase from 30 to more than 40 by 2013. “The single most important luxury goods of the 21st century are private space and time,” says Dr Dieter Zetsche, chairman of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “Autonomously driving cars by Mercedes-Benz shall offer exactly that. With the F 015 Luxury in Motion, this revolutionary concept of mobility becomes tangible for the first time.” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Chefs from the Costa del Sol had starring roles in the latest edition of Madrid Fusión. Leading the culinary expedition to Madrid was Diego Gallegos, popularly known as the “Caviar Chef”, who owns and runs the Sollo Restaurant in Benalmádena and who was named “chef revelation” at the international gastronomy summit in February. Over the past few years, Gallegos has been researching and studying the use of the sturgeon in cooking – every part of the fish – offering an imaginative and creative menu based only on sturgeon and caviar that includes morcilla (black pudding) prepared from the fish’s blood, sobrasada (cured sausage) and jiaozi (Japanese dumpling). Top chefs from around the world – Colombia to the UK and Japan to Finland – took part in a series of show cooking demonstrations, workshops and seminars during the summit, covering roasting and grilling techniques, oil temperatures,

stocks and bases, chocolate, spices, and sauces, salsas, curries and other dressings. A varied and extensive range of other core ingredients was also showcased, from truffles and artichokes to baby eels and Norwegian trout. Chef Diego del Río and manager José Carlos García from Marbella’s El Lago restaurant (see our “A La Carte” section this issue) spoke about the little-known goat meat from Málaga; and Dani García, from his eponymous restaurant at Hotel Puente Romano, showed why he has become known as the “master of cold”, dazzling onlookers with his liquid nitrogen creations. Also present for an on-stage interview was celebrated French chef Joël Robouchon, who declared, “The future of Spanish cuisine in the world is in tapas bars. Chefs come and go, but tapas will remain.” www.madridfusion.net / www.sollo.es HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

El Pozo Viejo

Newly Revamped Charm in the Heart of Marbella

Photos: Peter Staes Located in the oldest building in Marbella, built in 1502 in the heart of the Old Town, what was once a rundown restaurant has been taken over by a young, vibrant couple and transformed into a superb contemporary dining experience. Elio, an industrial designer from Argentina, ran restaurants in Denmark; while María, from Asturias, worked for many years as an air hostess for United Emirates. The couple met in Barcelona and lived in Dubai for a while before settling in Marbella in the summer of 2014. With Elio’s artistic flair and years of restaurant experience, combined with María’s exceptional hospitality skills and hardworking philosophy, they have already made El Pozo Viejo a hit with those who have visited it. The dynamic couple have set out to be as ecologically sustainable as possible by using re-used furniture and cooking with wood and locally-sourced ingredients. El Pozo Viejo offers three different areas where you can enjoy your evening. There is a quaint rustic-style bar, offering an array of different beverages including mojitos at just five euros each and two glasses of cava with a tapa for just seven euros. An intimate indoor dining area has been decorated with eclectic recycled furniture; and outside, a gorgeous “Secret Garden” (their courtyard) is covered with elegant shade sails with heaters so that you can dine al fresco even through the winter months. Their creative Mediterranean menu offers a bit of everything from salads, fish and seafood to meat, which is their speciality, cooked over wood to give it a deep smoky taste.

102

Prices are extremely reasonable and they are open for both lunch and dinner. The menu changes seasonally and there are specials every day. Starters range from eight to 16 euros, with a tapas tasting for just eight euros. If you are meateaters, you can enjoy a chateaubriand for 24 euros per person or a 350-gram fillet steak for just 26 euros. A must-try is their strawberries with crème brûlée - one of their signature dishes. They are particularly proud of their wines, which they have selected meticulously, and they will be holding wine tasting events so that customers can have an opportunity to try them. They will also be arranging flamenco shows and art exhibitions, the details of which will be posted on their Facebook page. Wondering where to go on a Sunday? El Pozo Viejo will be starting their buffet brunches, offering canapés, salads, meat and fish. This restaurant is an ideal place to go for a birthday, anniversary or other special event as it has a charming ambience and the menu caters for a variety of tastes; and if you want to extend the evening you can move into their “bodeguita” for a quiet drink. El Lago

A natural and local delicacy for refined palates

Long before “kilometre zero” became a fashionable addition to the culinary lexicon, El Lago was at the forefront of Costa del Sol restaurants sourcing local produce. Chef Diego del Río and manager Paco García have had a long-standing and genuine commitment to working closely with local producers, one reason why the restaurant (located in a picturesque lakeside setting in the Greenlife Golf clubhouse) received its first Michelin star in 2005, and has maintained it every year since. The latest “green” innovation at the restaurant involves an ingredient which has not had a particularly prominent place at the head table of Spanish cuisine – at least not for most diners – but which offers an intriguing alternative to more classic, or popular, meat dishes such as pork, beef and lamb. “Chivo” (kid or young goat) is not a new addition to the El Lago menu (they have been working with the Málaga breed for seven years and have played a key role in boosting its popularity in haute cuisine) but it is in a new guise that they have taken the delicacy to an even more exquisite level. Diego and Paco have reached agreement with a local Costa del Sol producer of the famous “payoyo” breed of goat to supply the restaurant from an organic farm in the hills above Marbella. Specifically, the Sierra de Crestellina protected nature area near Casares and a fourth-generation farming family from the area, where great-grandson Juan Ocaña is now running an artisanal cheese manufacturing business officially

104

launched in 1997 by his father. Juan’s company, Quesos Sierra Crestellina, raises payoyo goats that are allowed to roam freely around the mountain-side farm plot and are fed with their mother’s milk. Apart from the goats (which are delivered whole to El Lago, thus further enhancing the sustainability of the product), Juan and his team produce cottage cheeses, cured and semi-cured cheeses, and yoghurts flavoured with natural honey or chestnuts. They also hold workshops, and organise school and other group visits to the farm. Back at El Lago, the restaurant’s first dish created with the Sierra Crestellina payoyo breed – introduced for the winter 2015 menu – is baby goat with smoked cream cheese, Guadalhorce mandarin, and vegetable salad with mint. As the restaurant notes (and as Home & Lifestyle was able to confirm at a special tasting with Diego, Paco and Juan), this is a dish that is elegantly rich with “visual and culinary emotion”. GODello’S LITTLE ACRE… By AJ Linn

Ever heard of Arribes, Bullas, Méntrida, Pago Guijoso, Valles de Benavente, Monterrei, Cangas, Finca Élez? No real reason why you should, except they are all first ranking wine regions with their own Regulatory Committee (Consejo Regulador) that exercises the same authority in its respective area with as much power as that of Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Producers have to pay for the regulating committees, usually on the basis of a royalty per bottle each bodega sells. If you are lucky enough to be appointed to a plum job on one of these committees it really is an agreeable career move; you decide which grapes can be grown, how the wines can be labelled, etc., and you also get to attend a lot of official functions that usually consist of four-hour lunches – and you get paid well for it. Valdeorras is a typical mini-DO wine producing area, so small in fact it could almost pass unnoticed if it were not for its one blessing – the Godello grape. It consists of a tiny slip of land in Orense province sandwiched between the Galician wine-producing areas of Rías Baíxas (formerly Albariño) to the west and north and El Bierzo to the east. The Romans are credited with planting the first vines, and the red variety was popular until the phylloxera bug wiped them all out in 1911. Only in

106

the 1970s did some enterprising winemakers from outside the zone decide that the future was to return to the Godello and Mencia grapes that were native to the area, for white and red, respectively. By that time there were only around 200 Godello vines remaining, but fortunately these were saved before it was too late and the rest, as they say, is history. It is the Godello grape that makes this region famous, and, love him or hate him, the contentious Robert Parker wrote that Godello is one of his favourite white grapes anywhere. Nevertheless you cannot assume that anything with Valdeorras on the label is made from the magic Godello grape, so check carefully, and the lower price will usually give away the inferior variety. Official figures indicate that the production is split equally between exports and home sales, though I confess to never having come across a bottle of Valdeorras wine in a supermarket. Very low key, a bit like the region itself: beautiful and not too visited. Neither is it for gastronomes either, featuring that mainstay of what Spain’s inland areas produce in their back yard – pork. One of the typical dishes is a speciality during the winter period when pigs are killed domestically in what is known as the matanza. Blend the pig’s blood with milk, salt, flour and eggs, and in a frying pan greased with pig fat fry the mixture and serve with sugar and honey. Mmm… The wines are quality personified. You can find ValdeSil’s regular Godellos locally in Hipercor and stores such a Marbella’s Vinacoteca La Cartuja, (starting around €14). Pezas de Portella, another outstanding wine made from the fabulous Godello grape, can be bought for around €24, and the superb Guitian at about €12. Málaga’s Ordoñez family has a Valdeorras bodega within its group, and its highly recommended Avancia goes almost entirely for export. Make no mistake, these are great wines, possibly some of the best whites you have ever tasted, and the very small production keeps the prices high, but diligent searching is rewarded. The Pagos de Galir range includes an excellent young Godello for around €8 and a crianza for €12. Both are cracking value for money, and even the reds (the Mencia grape is not everyone’s favourite) are exceptional at between €6 and €10. (Stop-press: it is rumoured that Lidl now stocks a white Godello.)

Medical Minutes CUTTING-EDGE ADVICE FOR HEALTHY LIVING

By John Schieszer

Holy Guacamole An Avocado a Day May Help Keep the Doctor Away

It is believed that eating avocados may provide many important health benefits, and now you can add lowering your cholesterol levels as one of those health benefits. A new study found that individuals on a moderate-fat diet who ate an avocado every day had lower bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) levels than those on a similar diet without an avocado a day or on a lowerfat diet. The study, which was just published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, is important because it shows that eating one avocado a day as part of a heart-healthy, cholesterol-lowering, moderate-fat diet can help improve bad cholesterol levels in overweight and obese individuals. Researchers evaluated the effect avocados had on traditional and novel cardiovascular risk factors by replacing saturated fatty acids from an average American diet with unsaturated fatty acids from avocados. In this study, 45 healthy, overweight or obese patients between the ages of 21 and 70 were put on three different cholesterol-lowering diets. “This was a controlled feeding study, but that is not the real world. So, it is a proof of concept investigation. We need to focus on getting people to eat a heart-healthy diet that includes avocados and other nutrient-rich food sources of better fats,” said senior study author Penny Kris-Atherton, Ph.D., who is chair of the American Heart Association’s nutrition committee and distinguished professor of nutrition at Pennsylvania State University.

In this study, the volunteers consumed an average American diet (consisting of 34 per cent of calories from fat, 51 per cent carbohydrates and 16 per cent protein) for two weeks prior to starting one of the following cholesterol-lowering diets: lower-fat diet without avocado, moderate-fat diet without avocado, and moderate-fat diet with one avocado per day. Compared to the baseline average American diet, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the so-called bad cholesterol, was 13.5 mg/dL lower after consuming the moderate-fat diet that included an avocado. LDL was also lower on the moderatefat diet without the avocado (8.3 mg/dL lower) and the lower-fat diet (7.4 mg/ dL lower), though the results were not as striking as the avocado diet. Several additional blood measurements were also more favourable after the avocado diet versus the other two cholesterol-lowering diets: total cholesterol, triglycerides, small dense LDL, non-HDL cholesterol and others. These measurements are all considered to be cardio-metabolic risk factors in ways that are independent of the heart-healthy fatty acid effects, according to Kris-Atherton. “Avocados are not a mainstream food yet, and they can be expensive, especially at certain times of the year. Also, most people do not really know how to incorporate them in their diet except for making guacamole. But guacamole is typically eaten with corn chips, which are high in calories and sodium. Avocados, however, can also be eaten with salads, vegetables, sandwiches, lean protein foods (like chicken or fish) or even whole,” said Kris-Atherton.

About Anger

In this second column for Home & Lifestyle Magazine, Richard Cruz, counsellor and psychosexual therapist, talks about anger management and its links with trauma, both of which present widely in the counselling room today.

Anger management is a speciality that in my experience draws predominantly from the male population although it is certainly not limited to men, as both genders suffer from its debilitating consequences. Anger in the broadest sense is a natural human emotion; it’s healthy channelling gives us assertion and we would have to be saintly not to demonstrate angry outbursts at some point in our lives. In other words anger is here to stay and we need it for expression, getting things off our chest and survival. Some off us express too little anger and others too much. You know what category you fall into: either repressing your anger or letting it all hang out! Most people live convivially with the ebb and flow of normal levels of anger that adds to relationships as opposed to undermining them. However, there seems to be another “strain” of anger, for want of a better word, that goes well over the top. Call it rage or “red mist”… those afflicted are seriously impoverished by it when it takes hold. It’s also a destroyer of the quality of relationships, undermining and threatening the growth of trust. Men and women in its grip are powerless and impotent to do anything about it once it has unleashed itself. Clearly to have sought counselling for it usually means it is threatening co-existence at home; one partner’s suitcase is packed and at the door unless the angry person admits there is a problem and seeks help. This is often when the angry person presents for therapy; there has been an ultimatum at home after an incident, often not the first time the incident has occurred. It may have got physical, but not necessarily; yet one more unacceptable abusive outburst that has laid a path of destruction in its wake. So what is this kind of anger about and how is it treated? Clearly there is a quality to this anger that supersedes our benign version stated above. Clients are firstly usually ashamed and worried about it due to its nature of creeping up on them unawares. I use the analogy in treatment of the traffic light system. Those with anger management issues skip the amber light: they are going along at green and suddenly flick into red. They have not learnt to emotionally regu-

110

By Richard Cruz

late themselves sufficiently to realise there is an amber light and an opportunity to take action in that pre-danger domain. This is often a very useful tool and I work with it alongside raising awareness of the triggers that provoke the angry responses. Triggers are those tell-tale signs that inform us that things do not bode well; we might feel a trigger physically in the base of our stomach during an altercation with a partner, child, road-user, boss, etc. Shortness of breath, shallow breathing or feeling “hot under the collar” might be another. Triggers are the signs that tell us we are getting highly aroused and moving towards the red light danger zone. Now there are some simple techniques such as taking a walk around the block, doing some deep breathing or removing oneself from the danger zone, or counting to 10, which some people find useful and on a superficial level they are. However, these techniques in themselves I don’t push, as angry people in my experience are often angrily “wired” and treatment is beyond simple cognitive and behavioural strategies. I do a good assessment of family past and present and predisposing conditions. Has this person always been angry? What has been the history of anger and in particular the expression or lack of expression of anger in family of origin by parents? Were they angry little boys or girls? As this is psychotherapy I find treating anger very much a two-pronged approach: what we can do about its manifestation in the present, and confront the crisis now alongside the origins of emotional self-regulation. In other words, the impact of life history on the mind and body, as anger is often a felt experience akin to venom in the organism. Dealing With Trauma

So anger and rage is not solely in the cognitive world – it’s in the emotional world – and I find that those most struggling with harnessing anger for the good and wellbeing of self and others are often dealing with a degree of personal trauma. Trauma is a strong word and covers a wide range of issues, often early in life, including: divorce and separation of parents; sexual or emotional abuse or deprivation; non-attunement of parents/principal care-givers to emotional well-being of the child, etc. Trauma does not necessarily have meant a catastrophic event like war or death. But likewise it is not something to be underestimated, for any untoward event or series of events in a young person’s life, whereby the impact of that event on the child was felt as overpowering and beyond the child’s emotional ability to process the event, would leave he or she internalising the trauma, repressing it, and subsequently being shamed by it. And we know that we carry shame in the body. Trauma is probably a subject for another day. I thought it pertinent to introduce it to this article on anger management as sometimes it can have a bearing on the underlying symptoms of anger management. If trauma is denied or has not had an opportunity to be worked through it gets repressed. By the very nature of repression a volcano effect is created, anger or rage (and it’s powerful neighbour called depression) awaits for unleashing, and the vicious cycle of shame continues until it is halted and given the longawaited opportunity to come up into the light of day for healing. Quit Smoking …with a little help from the Golden Rain Tree By Rachel Garrod

Photo: Karelj

Do you want to stop smoking? Like many of us you’ve probably tried numerous treatments such as patches, gum, acupuncture, hypnosis, etc… but you’re still hooked. There are so many reasons not to smoke. Yet it is one of the hardest addictions to give up. And living here in Marbella doesn’t make it any easier! But now there is another treatment that is generating interest among the scientific world. From the seeds of the “Golden Rain Tree” (Cytisus Laburnum) there is a product that has been in use for over 50 years in eastern Europe; and during World War II Russian soldiers even called it “false tobacco”. In the West, until recently, this treatment was largely unknown as no proper testing or trials had been done. This plant-based product has been recognised as the closest substance to nicotine and is called cytisine. In the brain it acts just like nicotine and stimulates the release of pleasure chemicals such as dopamine, which means that withdrawal symptoms from nicotine are significantly reduced. A recent major study, published in the highly respected New England Journal of Medicine, has shown some exciting results. Cytisine (taken as a small tablet)

in combination with what’s known as behavioural support was compared to nicotine replacement therapy, in this case patches. After a month more smokers had stopped completely on cytisine compared to patches (40 per cent versus 31 per cent), and after six months the cytisine group still showed clear benefit compared to patches. In other studies cytisine has been shown to double your chances of quitting compared to placebo (dummy tablet). For best results cytisine should be taken as part of a behaviour change programme, incorporating education, peer support and behaviour change techniques. So, if you want to stop smoking this year, why not take a helping hand from nature? Rachel Garrod PhD is a physiotherapy practitioner and lecturer Tel. Hotspots Brick Lane has been graced with its first ever cereal café. The hipster style “Cereal Killer Café” is run by twins from Belfast, Gary and Alan, who concocted this idea on a hangover. With the ‘80s vibe the café has a collection of over 100 cereals, whilst also serving some nostalgic cereal classics. Limited edition boxes, collectibles and vintage magazines give the quirky café a yesteryear vibe. The café is open from 7am until 10pm, so cereal fiends can satisfy their cravings for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The Gallery Libby Sellers presents Troisième – a group exhibition of metals, minerals and monochrome. There is some outstanding work displayed at the exhibition, including works from Fabien Cappello, Formafantasma, Simon Hasan, Hunting & Narud, Julia Lohmann & Gero Grundmann, Peter Marigold and Nicolas Le Moigne. Fabien Cappello displayed his impressive five-piece candlestick whilst Peter Marigold proudly presented his sculpture, Ger Butler – a metal clothes stand designed in blackened raw steel and brass. Nicolas Le Moigne certainly earned his artistic stripes for his work in Eternit, a compound of cement and pulped fibre. He also showed off his latest commission, Copper High Table. The exhibition is located on 41-42 Berners street. For more information visit www.libbysellers.com.

What’s Trending

Fashion

With the film awards season in full swing, the 72nd annual Golden Globes took place in the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles in January. In spite of its location, it seems the Brits triumphed in the style stakes and the award gongs!

Apart from the terrific gongs awarded at the BAFTAs and the Grammys, the fashion standards were set high too. As two of the biggest nights in showbiz coincided on the same evening, the outfits had to be on point. Here are some of the best looks from the Grammys and the BAFTAs:

We had some British beauties sweeping the red carpet including Emily Blunt, Keira Knightley, Rosamund Pike, Sienna Miller and Kate Beckinsale, who all opted for a light snowy palette. Felicity Jones stunned in a dramatic flowing teal dress whilst Ruth Wilson dazzled in emerald green. Also in tow was George Clooney’s new British wife, Amal, who made her debut Golden Globes appearance in a stunning black dress. Joanne Froggatt and Laura Carmichael looked breathtaking in their full-length fitted gowns. The Brits’ sartorial stakes were high, and some of the most prestigious awards were won by our very own too. Eddie Redmayne won the award for best actor thanks to his moving performance in The Theory of Everything, beating such iconic actors as Steve Carell, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jake Gyllenhaal and David Oyelowo. Joanne Froggatt won the award for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Mrs. Anna Bates in Downton Abbey. beating some other talented actresses including Uzo Aduba, Kathy Bates, Allison Janney and Michelle Monaghan. Ruth Wilson won a tough category as best actress, beating Claire Danes, Viola Davis, Julianna Margulies and Robin Wright for her acclaimed performance in The Affair. Two other major events took place to celebrate the world of music and the world of movies. The BAFTAs saw British actor Eddie Redmayne triumph again. He has had an outstanding response to his incredible portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, and he proudly took home the leading actor award. The film was also awarded another gong for the Outstanding British Film. To celebrate the music industry, the 57th Annual Grammys took place in Los Angeles the same evening. Flying the flag for Britain was sensational newcomer Sam Smith, who won four Grammy awards just nine months after of the release of his debut album, In the Lonely Hour. Humbly accepting one of his awards, he said, “Before I made this record, I was doing everything to try and get my music heard, I tried to lose weight and I was making awful music. It was when I started to be myself that the music flowed.” Probably the most touching moment was when he gracefully thanked his ex for inspiring his hit album. “I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys.”

Reese Witherspoon – BAFTAs She looked a far cry from her on-screen character in Wild, but the blonde beauty was stunning in a purple Stella McCartney gown. Julianne Moore – BAFTAs She has certainly been sweeping the awards this season and her sartorial style was on point too. Moore stunned in a floor-length Tom Ford dress. Rosamund Pike – BAFTAs She has already shocked fans with her incredible post baby body and it was no different when she graced the red carpet in a Roland Mouret black silk marocain gown. Amy Adams – BAFTAs The gorgeous red-head looked sensational in a Lanvin dress to celebrate the nomination for her role in Big Eyes Felicity Jones – BAFTAs The British beauty has had an incredible response to her acute portrayal of Jane in The Theory of Everything and she certainly turned heads in a Dior Haute Couture gown Miley Cyrus – The Grammys For once, the raunchy songstress looked demure and elegant in a cut-out Alexandre Vauthier black dress. Taylor Swift – The Grammys Our favourite pop girl went for a dramatic teal ombré Elie Saab gown. Beyonce – The Grammys As always Beyonce stunned in a floor-length Proenza Schouler lace black gown. Katy Perry – The Grammys The talented musician stepped out in a silver Zuhair Murad dress with an elaborate beaded fringe. Ciara – The Grammys Ciara turned heads in a ruffled Alexandre Vauthier confection, teamed with Christian Louboutin stilettos. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

A group of 30 drawings and engravings produced by Pablo Picasso between 1906 and 1925, titled “Movements & Sequences”, will remain on show at the Picasso Museum in Málaga until 17 May. For this exhibition, the selected works of Málaga-born Pablo Picasso (held in the museum’s collection) have been hung alongside other contemporaries including María Blanchard, Georges Braque, Federico García Lorca, André Derain, Joan Miró, Joaquín Peinado, José Moreno Villa and Jacques Villon, as well as work by photographer Paul Strand and painter and filmmaker Hans Richter. In an exercise closely related to anthropology, this artistic dialogue bears witness to the cultural moment in which the works were designed and produced: films, scientific objects, viewing machines, written information and a variety of documents. www.museopicassomalaga.org

Golden Oldies versus the New Kids

Spring is about to be sprung onto us and accompanying the beautiful weather I’m hoping shall be beautiful music. This year has already given us some great new artists, but it seems the old hands are set to pull out a few stops and treat us to their vision of what’s “on trend”. First to do so is Madonna, with her new record Rebel Heart set for release on 6 March. With collaborations from Swedish producer Avicii and American DJ Diplo I’m guessing Madge will be sticking with her housey-pop mix of music we’ve heard from her for the last 15 years or so now. With a look of 50 Shades of Grey about the album cover, I for one really hope it has a little more substance to it than just another façade of what record execs think will sell by the truck load. Brian Wilson has assembled an all-star supporting cast for his new album, No Pier Pressure, which is scheduled to arrive on 7 April via Capitol Records. Along

By Alex George

with performances from a number of long-time musical peers, including several of his former Beach Boys band-mates, Wilson’s new LP boasts Kacey Musgraves, fun.’s Nate Ruess and She & Him’s Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward. Wilson began working on his 11th solo LP with long-time collaborator Joe Thomas in 2012 as the Beach Boys reunited for their 50th anniversary, touring the country and releasing a new album, That’s Why God Made the Radio. Initially, Wilson intended to record his new songs with the Beach Boys, but when the songwriter and group parted ways once again he sought out guest singers to help finish the job. Still to be announced for 2015 album releases are the likes of Def Leppard, Duran Duran, Fleetwood Mac, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Van Morrison. Can the old (and I say old in the best way possible) favourites of the music industry beat the new kids this year? If they can all get along in the studio long enough, I say yes!

Round-up of business, charity, cultural and other general items of interest from the Costa del Sol, Gibraltar… and further afield CAPE REED

Entertaining Outside… in Total Privacy With outdoor living playing such an important role in the Costa del Sol lifestyle, privacy is a key issue when it comes to outside entertainment. As Cape Reed notes, “For many years builders and landscapers were searching for natural looking solutions instead of just closing in the area with skyhigh build-up walls. Unfortunately locally available materials like brezo that were applied as fencing solutions did not meet expectations in terms of aesthetics, and in particular durability.” Cape Reed subsequently introduced an attractive and durable solution for this problem: a fence or enclosure constructed with pressure-treated timber including saligna laths. These timbers – the same as all Cape Reed materials – come from sustainable resources, and the construction carries a 15-year guarantee. Tel. (+34 951 775 495) / 638 421 464 / www.capereed.com

Corporate Rebrand and New Website Launch Long-established Norwegian-owned real estate specialists Spanord are now trading as Perfect Marbella following a re-brand. As part of the new brand, they also launched a new website featuring latest styling and functionality. Established in 1999, the then Spanord became one of the largest Norwegian property companies in Spain. The company initially helped Scandinavian buyers but today its clientele is drawn from a much wider international audience. According to the company, this needed to be reflected in its branding, and “Perfect Marbella” was chosen “to give clients a better understanding of the company’s connection to the name, the Coast and the property market in Marbella”. The website (www.perfectmarbella.com) “also reflects the company’s rounded approach, not only to providing professional property services but also legal, rentals, maintenance and construction services. The design and functionality of the site were painstakingly considered to adhere to the company’s exacting standards and attention to detail, to showcase the wealth of properties available and provide an enjoyable user experience.” In addition to an aerial map of the Costa del Sol coastline with a search facility for instant access to the desired properties, there are also useful tips on the buying process, a comprehensive golf guide, an area guide and a blog section. As Perfect Marbella founder and director Knut Helge Nordbotn explains, “The new name clearly conveys our love of Marbella. We wanted to communicate our enthusiasm for the Marbella lifestyle and for helping clients realise their own Spanish properties dreams. We’re thrilled with the new website; it reflects our modern outlook, clearly lists our services and introduces the members of our friendly team, who are on-hand throughout the entire buying process… and beyond.” Tel. Some of the Costa del Sol’s top restaurants and chefs will be actively supporting a special dinner, “Las Diferencias Nos Hacen Únicos” (“Differences Make Us Unique”), to raise funds for the Aspandem association, which looks after disabled people on the Coast. The dinner will be held at Beach Club Estrella del Marbella on Friday 20 March, with an entry price of €85. At the press presentation of the event in February, leading food critic Enrique Bellver noted that it was extremely difficult for so many top chefs to be brought together for the same event, and said it was the highest quality gastronomic event that he could recall for a long time. The cocktail reception and menu are being prepared by chefs from the Tanino, Takumi, Obrador Dulce y Salado, Vincci Estrella del Mar, La Marea, Messina, 1870, El Lago, Nomo, Sollo, José Carlos García and Dani García restaurants. www.lasdiferenciasnoshacenunicos.org

The clinic has also created a meeting room where live HD transmissions can be screened from the operating room for science and teaching courses. The total clinic space now extends over nearly 600 square metres, “making it the biggest independent plastic and surgery clinic on the Coast”. Staff numbers have also been increased to meet the requirements of the new space, with Dr. Maria Eugenia Aranda now offering aesthetic medicine, Botox and fillers, Dr. Phillip Gonser from Germany joining the team in January as surgical resident, and experienced consultant plastic surgeon Dr. Michel Saiveau visiting once a month from France for consultations and to operate selected cases. MANILVA NETWORKING

Fundraising Event for Duquesa Charity All of the proceeds from Shaw Marketing Services’ Manilva networking group event on 18 March will be donated to The Duquesa Charitable Association of St George. This monthly, bilingual networking event is usually just for women, but this special fundraising event will be open to all business people on the western Costa del Sol “to give entrepreneurs a friendly and open environment to build their network, find suppliers and make new contacts, whilst raising money for a great cause”. “I strongly believe that all businesses should make a positive impact on their community,” says marketing and networking expert Georgina Shaw, who leads the group, “and our March networking event will be a great way to support businesses whilst raising much-needed funds.” Dean Tyler Shelton, president of The Duquesa Charitable Association of St George and area director at Manilva Town Hall, adds, “I’m thrilled to not only have been invited along to this event, that I personally believe to be optimal for the future positioning of Manilva as a business centre or place to do business on the Costa del Sol and in the wider Spain, but that they have also chosen our small local charity be the receiver of the proceeds of the event.” The event costs €5 to include the networking activities and refreshments, and it is being held at CIVIMA (Manilva Wine Museum) from 6.30 to 8pm. info@shawmarketingservices.com www.shawmarketingservices.com.

TOP GARDEN

Quality Range of Furniture for the Outdoors Top Garden has been involved with the garden furniture industry since 1989, always working with the finest materials and most creative designs, and adding a touch of excellence to each product. Over time, the company has adapted to new requirements and demands, including indoor sofas and beds to complement its range of products. All of Top Garden’s stock is available permanently in the company’s warehouses, thus reducing the delivery period to a minimum – a matter of days and at the most one week. They also work with quality sofa and bed fabrics. Sofas can be made to order, with clients selecting the composition and details. The delivery time is longer, although never more than a month. According to Top Garden, their showroom has the largest display of garden furniture on the Costa del Sol, as well as a large range of garden objects, including parasols. They also stock a collection of rugs for both outdoor and indoor use, outdoor heaters, paintings, windows, and interior and outside decoration. Clients can view an outdoor display in which the furniture is set up in its true essence – in the open air Urb. Paraiso Barronal, Estepona / Tel. Anniversary Celebrations Generous Support for “Army of Tins” for Top Fabrics Company

This is an important year for Gancedo. The prestigious Spanish textile design company is celebrating its 70th anniversary with the presentation of four collections whose designs have been inspired by the fashion and arts movements over the past seven decades: Indian spirituality, the hippy movement, the fifties, the pop era… Showpiece fabrics, tasteful materials and an extensive palette of colours are the result of a major professional commitment, the same reputation that the company has enjoyed since its beginnings. Gancedo’s store in Marbella offers these collections as well as being the exclusive distributor of other internationally renowned brands including Liberty and Sanderson. One of the Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice’s key fund-raising initiatives is an “Army of Collection Tins”, placed in bars, restaurants, shops and people’s own homes throughout the Málaga province from Nerja to Sotogrande, as well as two gigantic tins in the departure exits at Malaga airport. Last year these collection tins were filled with a total of €49,609,31, and coordinator Natalia Aparicio has passed on the charity’s thanks “to the community for their generous support for having donated their change and to all the volunteers involved for their continual work picking up these tins from everywhere”, including Keith Johnston, and Harris and Allen Rowlands, who counted the coins as they arrived at the Cudeca centre. Another major fundraising event coming up is the annual “telethon” organised by Talk Radio Europe on 27 March. In a change from previous TRE telethons, associated events are being held in the lead-up. Auction items and sponsor data will be available on the website beforehand tretelethon.com, allowing visitors to make advanced bids on items. Each year the Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice requires €3 million to provide its services, including home care, the day care unit and the in-patient unit – and covering over 850 patients annually. Tel. Porsche Owners Club

First Anniversary Celebrations in Andalucía Members of the Porsche Owners Club of Andalucía celebrated their first anniversary with a rally through the Andalucian countryside, culminating with lunch at Nueva Kaskada in Marbella. The club was founded in 2014 by retired major Gary Compson, now a musician and entertainer, to bring together like-minded Porsche owners/enthusiasts – for “motoring fun under the sun”. It now has 50 members of several nationalities, including British, Spanish, Scandinavian, Lithuanian, Belgian and Irish. Monthly rallies are organised for members with their family and friends, followed by lunch at one of the region’s fine ventas. Other events include trips to racetracks and testing days. During the anniversary lunch – accompanied by his co-founder Peter Gavrell, also a member of the Swedish Porsche Owners Club – Gary outlined a series of events planned for the coming year. www.porscheownersandalucia.eu Photos reprinted courtesy of Dr. Ian Kuah

RAIN, WIND, HAIL, SNOW & FIRE

What to do if your home is damaged by an atmospheric phenomenon

General weather conditions in Spain

Peace of mind with LÍnea Directa

As the climate has warmed globally, some types of extreme weather have become more frequent and severe in recent decades. Extreme heat, intense precipitation and drought are on the increase. Heat waves are becoming longer and hotter. Heavier rainfalls and flooding are more frequent. In a wide swing between extremes, drought is also more intense and more widespread. Small changes in the averages of many key climate variables can correspond to large changes in the weather. These changes are extremely difficult to predict and this weather variability can be extremely costly. Other atmospheric phenomena, such as hail, snow and fire, previously uncommon in regional climates such as the Mediterranean, are now becoming more common occurrences. That’s why it’s important to take out a quality home insurance policy.

We understand that your peace of mind is important, especially in your home. As adverse weather conditions become more common, Línea Directa will ensure you are fully covered from the diverse effects they have on your property and its contents. When you take out a home insurance policy from Línea Directa you can breath more easily. We cannot predict when extreme atmospheric conditions will occur, but we will be there to ensure that – if any damage should result – you won’t have to worry. Our aim is to provide you with added peace of mind.

With LÍnea Directa you are covered for damage by atmospheric phenomena As global climate conditions vary, Línea Directa adapt their home insurance policies to ensure that customers are covered for damage resulting from some types of extreme weather. Línea Directa include cover for these unpredictable events in their insurance policies.

We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Línea Directa please call

Inheritance and Donations

Change of Spanish Tax Law for Non-Residents Article supplied by Arcos & Lamers Avocados

A judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union states that the different tax treatment of donations and inheritance between inheritors and donee residents and non-residents in Spain, between grantor residents and non-residents in Spain, and between donations and similar provisions of estate situated in Spain and outside is contrary to the principle of free movement of capital. The judgment (dated 3 September 2014 – Case C-127/12) does not refer to powers attributed to the autonomous communities (generally with a more favourable fiscal impact for the taxpayer) but rather to national legislation that was applicable to non-residents in this matter. By Spanish Law 26/2014 of 27 November (published in the Official Gazette of 28 November 2014), legislation of Inheritance and Donations (Law 29/1989) is adjusted to the premises stated in the Court of Justice of the European Union. Focusing on inheritance assumptions, which are those most frequently resolved by Arcos and Lamers Asociados, the adaptation of national law to European judgment will mean the following: • In the event of acquisition of goods and rights by inheritance, legacy or any other title of succession, if the deceased had been resident in a member state of the European Union or European Economic Area other than Spain, the taxpayer is entitled to the application of regulations approved by the autonomous community which has the highest value of assets and rights of the estate located in Spain. If there were no goods or rights located in Spain, the

130

rules of the autonomous community in which the taxpayer resides will apply. • In the event of acquisition of goods and rights by inheritance, legacy or any other title of succession, if the deceased had been resident in one autonomous community, non-resident taxpayers who are resident in a member state of the European Union or the European Economic Area will be entitled to the application of regulations approved by that autonomous community. In this respect, it is understood that residents of Spain are resident in the autonomous community where they have remained a greater number of days during the five previous years, counted from date to date and finishing the day before the taxable date. This adaptation of the Law of Inheritance and Donations to the judgment of the European Court is important, as Spanish tax authorities should update the appropriate tax forms as of 1 January 2015 due to the fact that autonomous bonuses are not included in the current tax forms. Our Spanish law firm in Marbella has a team of experts available to advise you on the process of inheritance matters and settlement of the corresponding Spanish inheritance taxes.
