EDITORIAL It is now time for some cautious optimism that the COVID-19 situation will become less traumatic as we move into spring and summer, thanks to vaccination programs and other ongoing measures. Nevertheless, one aspect of our lives that is unlikely to change, at least for the foreseeable future, is the increasingly important role of our homes. However the pandemic evolves over the next few months, it remains vital to maintain a comfortable and functional home environment. Furthermore, if only to self-reward our patience and perseverance, it is also quite therapeutic to indulge in a little home luxury now and again… a fancy new gadget for the kitchen, a jacuzzi for the bathroom, latestgeneration “smart” control for the entertainment system, or shade sails to enhance our outdoor living. For home décor and design industry professionals, it has also been a difficult roller-coaster ride over the past 12 months. International fairs are a key source of their inspiration, but the customary annual schedule of shows has, understandably, been seriously disrupted. Even in the early part of 2021, major exhibitions have been forced to postpone their events until later in the year and instead temporarily redirect their focus towards “non-presencial” initiatives – such as Maison & Objet’s MOM “Digital Days”. At the time of going to press, the revised schedule for key shows in 2021

In the meantime, as (fingers crossed) we look forward to a return to some semblance of “new normality”, our attention was drawn to these 2021 trends highlighted recently on various digital platforms... According to experts quoted in The Week, “furniture flipping” could be the next big trend in home sustainability – with an increasing number of people committed to reducing their waste and helping to save the planet. Described as an innovative way to add a touch of individuality to your household, “furniture flipping” involves taking pre-owned, vintage or even damaged furniture and giving it a complete makeover. Elsewhere, a study by Veepee found that sales of “home” items among Spanish buyers rose by 30 per cent in 2020 compared with the previous year, especially bed linen, cushions, living-dining room furniture and kitchen utensils. This highlighted the importance that Spaniards place in “feeling good in their homes, where they now spend most of their time”. For 2021, the platform said the main objective would be “to connect with nature, creating a warm and harmonious space that provides us with well-being”. Neutral tones will predominate, for “a cosy ambience that transmits peace”. Idealista confirmed this trend, noting that “the key words are relaxation, privacy and comfort”, and the main colour palettes those that highlight “serenity, calm and relaxation, but also joy and energy – eve-

rything that we need!”. These trends are certainly well worth further investigation as we seek creative new ideas to enhance the comfort and almost bubble-like sanctuary of our homes, and be fully prepared for whatever the next few months bring us.

OUTDOOR LIVING ···

YOUR PERFECT OUTDOOR SPACE Springtime is when we start taking stock of our outdoor furniture. With the temperature rising and the evenings getting longer, our outdoor space becomes even more appealing. The outdoor area should be a continuation of the style that you have set inside your home, so make sure your design skills don’t stop at the patio door. No matter how big your outside area is, there is always a way to make this space an enjoyable place to relax in. If you only make one big investment for your patio, go for a good-quality comfortable sofa and it will be quite transformational. A fire always provides a cosy feeling in the evenings, offering warmth and ambience – bioethanol fires are ideal as they are cleaner and don’t leave a smell on your clothes. Now that confinement restrictions have been eased (for the time being), inviting friends over for a meal is now possible. However, dining al fresco is always going to be a safer place to entertain, so a good outdoor dining table large enough to cater for your usual number of guests is important. Also, it is worth remembering that a good shade solution to protect your diners from the sun makes for a more congenial dining experience.

Inspired by tree branches, Komodo 5 from Nardi is a modular system of upholstered seats in fibreglass resin, making it perfect for outdoor use. It can be configured as desired depending on space, taste and needs. Nardi is available from Siesta Interior Design in C. Plaza in Nueva Andalucía (www.siestainteriordesign.com) and De Tropen on the Autovía del Mediterráneo A7, Km. 272, Vélez-Málaga, or buy online at www.detropen.es.

CREATING HIGH-QUALITY OUTDOOR SETTINGS WITH A PERSONAL TOUCH Interview with Marcel Kluijtmans – Director-Owner of De Tropen 34

MARCH & APRIL 2021

Your 13,000-metre showroom must be one of the largest on the Coast. Tell us more about the different aspects of outdoor furniture and accessories that you offer from there... Our 13,000 square metre installations are indeed the largest on the Coast, and also in southern Spain as a whole. We offer a complete range of outdoor furniture that includes hundreds of combinations of dining sets, lounge sets, loungers and bar tables, as well as parasols, barbecues, outdoor kitchens, cushions, shade sails, terrace heaters, covers and decoration. We buy directly from factories in different parts of the world, and also from such well-known brands as Hartman, Talenti, 4 Seasons Outdoor, CoSi and Nardi, to name a few. Because we buy large volumes, we can keep the prices low, but we are also able to offer everything we have in our showroom out of current stock. Nobody has to wait weeks or months before something gets delivered. People can comfortably park their car in our free and covered private parking area, extending over 5,000 square metres, and come in, view and choose their furniture in a relaxed way, while enjoying a good cup of Spanish coffee. We give them expert advice, because every situation and terrace is different and there are many, many styles and materials to choose from. Even if people just want to orientate themselves or get some inspiration, they are more than welcome, and we also offer them a cup of coffee as well as giving them excellent restaurant recommendations in case they would like to enjoy a good lunch or dinner in one of the 200 restaurants in Torre del Mar. If people can’t make it to the showroom, do you offer online services? Yes, we have an excellent website that offers our services throughout the whole of Spain and even other countries in Europe. People can easily navigate the website, from their home or office, and buy their chosen products online. Depending on where they are located, they will usually receive their order within a few days. Also, we are available 24 hours a day by WhatsApp, email or telephone if people want more information about a product or have other specific questions. So, if people cannot make it physically to our showroom, they can still be confident using our online services and read the comments of our existing clients if they do not yet have the experience of buying in either our physical or online shop. What have been some of the more popular purchases from your showroom and why? It depends on which category of products you refer to with this question, because we have so many. But I suggest people will find out for themselves, when they do business with us, that one thing we can assure them is we offer the latest trends in combination with the best possible prices and services, and we have the largest collections of outdoor furniture and accessories in Spain. What important tips can you offer people when choosing their outdoor furniture? First of all, people have to look at the size of their terrace and if it is covered or not. Then they have to consider how they are going to use that space: for example, for dining outside or just relaxing, or a combination of both. This already means there is a key difference between purchasing a dining set or a lounge set, or a combination of the two. The choice of furniture we recommend that people buy when renting out their place also varies from furniture for private use only. In addition, we have to know the climatic conditions of the terrace: for example, is it located on top of a mountain or is it a roof terrace with a lot of strong winds, or is it exposed to the full sun and no shade during the whole day in summer? There are many aspects that are important when buying outdoor furniture, but it is also a very personal choice depending on the circumstances, and that’s why we take great pride in giving expert advice to all our clients, no matter what. THE BEST

RECIPE FOR YOUR TABLE

They say you eat with your eyes, and tableware certainly contributes to that visual gastronomic experience – as it can seem like it is singing about the food placed upon it. Whether you plump for a pattern on your plates or go for a plain design, there is also the shape to consider. Larger plates look more celebratory (there’s nothing worse than a crowded-looking plate) and organicshaped plates are currently very much on-trend. Mixing and matching is also definitely acceptable: for example, having a plain dinner plate with patterned side plates adds a touch of playfulness and interest to the dinner table; while coloured water glasses are also a nice casual touch. With restaurants being closed in many areas, make eating at home a pleasure with some gorgeous tableware – and photos of your culinary creations on Instagram will never look so good!

LOVELY LOUNGING… If you are thinking of revamping your living room consider a few “wow-factor” features that can be placed at different heights, such as a statement mirror, rug, chandelier, armchair, cushions or bold piece of artwork to keep the eye bouncing around the room with interest. Neutral rooms, especially, will thank you for it! L-shaped sofas are great for casual entertaining, whilst placing seats directly opposite each other makes for a more formal look. Sofas and armchairs with low armrests are highlighted everywhere in latest contemporary collections, offering more open seating without jutting high armrests. Make sure that you have sufficient places for glasses and mugs when lounging. There is nothing worse than having to leave items on the floor ready to be knocked over, so side and coffee tables which can be reached at arm’s length yet are easy to walk around are imperative for a room’s functionality.

OMEO DESIGN LAUNCH AN E-COMMERCE EXPERIENCE THAT IS MADE TO ORDER OMEO Design are best known for their elegant and luxurious interiors focused on bespoke furniture, texture and sophistication. Now they have taken their signature collection to a whole new level, with a shop-able destination that includes exceptional new launches and worldwide delivery. The e-commerce site features their most popular designs – from furniture to bed linen, and accessories such as candles and cushions. We spoke to OMEO founder Olivia O about venturing into the world of online shopping, and how she did it slightly differently. Here’s what she had to say…

Describe the soul of the OMEO brand? What drives your beliefs? The philosophy of our team focuses on providing clients with a successful journey through the design process. Our goal is that the entire experience of creating a home should be fun and, above all, enjoyable. Tell us about OMEO Design’s new e-commerce initiative... It has always been my dream to create a range of products that would enhance the home environment, accentuating that feeling of style and comfort to help maximise the living space. I’ve been working on product ideas for years and finally managed to surround myself with a great team of people to help me deliver. Can you expand on the different designs you are offering? Since we have always focused on bespoke design I had the urge to create a bespoke experience online for our customers. An interactive experience where customers would be able to have that baseline foundation of a good silhouette and a good design, and then be able to customise it with fabric, wood, iron and different finishes. Beyond furniture, OMEO offers carefully designed interior details and objects that complement our furniture and environments and that stand for elegance, function and feeling. Customers will also be able to shop by room or by item. Visitors to the site will find constantly updated exclusive style tips, video teasers and howtos, alongside insightful customer Q&As. 56

Will OMEO Design continue their furniture production in Marbella? Every piece of furniture we create is made right here in Marbella. The choice of production in Europe makes transport distances relatively short and the environmental impact less damaging, which is something that is really important to us. I work very closely with our architect Magali Antoín and I have an amazing team of creative craftspeople who bring my designs to life. They have a strict eye for design and a passion for what they do. Some details are made entirely by hand, and many of the carpenters bring professionalism and experience accumulated over several generations. How does the design process work in terms of producing each piece? Furniture production at OMEO is customer order-controlled, which means that virtually nothing is waiting to be finished in the warehouse – the furniture is only manufactured when it has been ordered. Our customers are able to modify our existing design and change elements such as the dimensions, fabric, type of wood and surface treatments, to commission something entirely new, special and unique. The surface treatment takes place specifically for each customer at OMEO’s own production facility in Marbella, and we keep a large stock of our favourite fabrics and different types of wood to make the delivery process as smooth as possible. What is the one thing your clients would be surprised to know about you? I’m a huge animal lover, and I’m crazy about dogs. I currently have four rescue dogs that I love more than words can express. I also like throwing parties; any occasion that can be celebrated, I will celebrate! Typically, it’s some sort of theme party where costumes are preferable. Everyone is always invited... family, friends, work associates, kids, clients and of course dogs. In Conclusion… The online e-commerce store debuts on the OMEOdesign.com website with bespoke furniture, bed linen, cushions, candles and gifts, all carrying the stamp of the award-winning designer’s iconic neutral-yet-opulent style. From soft, beautifully stitched linens with a 600 thread-count in OMEOs signature colour scheme to contrasting throws in sumptuous fabrics and mood-setting, fragrant candles, the OMEOdesign.com affordable luxury range starts from under £20 and delivery is available in Spain and worldwide. WORKSPACES TO INSPIRE YOU Setting up the ideal home office can be tricky because you need to be able to balance practicality with stylish décor. Your workspace should be an area where you feel immediately comfortable and inspired, so adding personal touches is always a great idea. For example, a vase of your favourite flowers, some artwork or a vintage mirror will instantly make the space more homely. Some people do not like to use desks as they can be seen as too formal and stuffy, and they use a dining table instead – which is usually larger and offers a more casual look. Efficient storage systems are a must to maintain the area tidy and organised. Consider good shelving, drawers and desk organisers, and this will help keep your mind clear and focused.

Go for a minimalist look with Bolia. Their stylish Palm swivel office chairs in soft grey contrast with the dynamic black table and boho Vira rug made from 100 per cent jute (www.design.bolia.com).

STORAGE WITH STYLE Having good storage can be quite a revelation for a home, transforming it into an organised and orderly space – which in turn creates an aesthetically pleasing overall look. If you tend to hoard items, hiding your cherished items away puts your mind at rest and keeps them safe from other people when passing through the home. If space is an issue, storage solutions can be a saviour. Extend cabinets or shelves high up to the ceiling to maximise on space, and this will also make the walls feel higher and the room more spacious. Cabinets don’t have to be just a dull functional furniture item; you can be brave and go for a bold colour or design, and they then also serve as a design statement.

Poiat’s Bastone cabinet was designed by master cabinetmaker Antrei Hartikainen. The slim wooden slats give a feeling of lightness and filter the light inside, casting beautiful shadows (www.poiat.com).

WARMING UP OUR WALLS Wallpapers have become a “bit of a thing” in recent years, with feature walls an increasingly popular new craze. In reality, wallpapering an entire room can sometimes be overwhelming on the eye, so covering just one wall is more than enough to add depth and texture to a room that paint often cannot provide. KITCHEN DESIGN IDEAS There is a lot to consider when installing a new kitchen. Apart from sinks, faucets, appliances and the like, there are also surfaces, lighting and storage options to think about. Raw materials have made a big comeback in the home, and never more so than in the kitchen. Stone, wood and copper are popular materials in contemporary kitchens, adding a natural feel to the space. Dark hues have also become very on-trend – and they can often give a warmer ambience to the room. This important area of the home has evolved greatly over the years, not just in terms of technology but also in the way the space is perceived. In the past the kitchen was mostly just a functional place for someone to cook, but it has now gained new status and is often an area where the household can come together to dine, and sometimes even relax. This is especially the case when the design of the home is open-plan and the kitchen and living room share the same space. Here are some ideas…

The refined and sophisticated Fly Float kitchen from Modulnova combines stone with wood, softening the minimalist formalism of the overall aesthetic whilst also using warm shades for the finishes. The raw finish of the materials both highlights and preserves the authenticity of the natural materials used in this kitchen. The wood is first cleaned with a jet of fine sand, which sanitises the surface and restores it to its original condition, as well as preparing it for the application of eco-friendly vegetable oils that enhance its texture. A cedar brown finish for the front of the base units is used to match the Emperador stone selected for the worktop, which provides an elegant effect – enhanced by the striking bronze dust doors of the tall storage units. The other tall units feature a finish that matches the façade of the island, thus creating an elegant coating consisting of 15-centimetre wooden slats. These have a recessed slatted pressure-opening system that separates the kitchen from a large larder area (seen through tinted glass), where wines and quality food can be stored, as well as crockery and various kitchen accessories. Modulnova is situated in Avda. Salamanca in San Pedro de Alcántara (www. modulnovamarbella.com).

CUTTING-EDGE HOME KITCHEN PROJECTS Showcased here are two kitchen projects carried out by Decodan Studios

84

MARCH & APRIL 2021

Modern Home The first project was completed for a new family home built in a modern style. The 20 square metre kitchen opens out to the dining area and property entrance. The aim was to optimise the available space by taking advantage of the two main walls – their entire height from floor to ceiling – in addition to introducing a central island for the cooking area and seating for two people. They created large storage spaces and highly functional work surfaces, while facilitating human interaction thanks to a direct transition between the work and dining areas. The domestic appliances include a large-capacity oven (90 centimetres wide), microwave and 80-centimetre induction hob, two refrigerators, a freezer, a dishwasher and a hood integrated into the false ceiling. The concrete-effect floor and work surfaces provide an attractive contrast to the white lacquered cupboard doors, and the kitchen is complemented by a stunning window overlooking the garden. The wooden staircase and dining room break up this colour scheme, conveying its warmth to the living room; while the height of the plinth has been reduced as much as possible, thus achieving the sense of “floating” furniture. According to Decodan Studios, “The materials used blend perfectly into an architectural concept characterised by smooth surfaces. The result is a contemporary, high-quality spatial effect.” Brands/products: Kitchen furniture – Wega from Arredo3 Countertop – Pietra di Savoia Grigia Bocciardata from Laminam Domestic appliances and sink – Neff, Liebherr, Frecan and Franke

Kitchen Renovation The second project involved demolishing the partition wall to create a large single living and kitchen area. The design of this 27 square metre kitchen is highlighted by contrasting lines between different materials, with the owners opting for a combination of predominant gloss white and open modules, display cabinets and wooden elements. The absence of handles means that all the elements are perfectly integrated into the project. Before the renovation, the kitchen was completely closed with one access door. After the partitions were demolished, Decoden were able to create a single space open to the living room, thus improving the area’s spaciousness, lightness and human interaction. The U-shaped composition enabled the use of all the walls, while the “peninsula” now enjoys greater prominence with the cooking area and its spectacular sea views. Another advantage was being able to introduce a new furniture block on the opposite side of the kitchen, where previously there was only one corridor. This area is now equipped with two wine cabinets, a storage area, display cabinets and an open-model feature with smoked glass. “The end result,” says Decodan, “is a space that invites you to linger, and provides an ideal place to share good times with family and friends.” Brands/products: Kitchen furniture – Kali from Arredo3 Countertop – Dekton Liquid Sky from Cosentino Domestic appliances and sink – AEG, Siemens, Frecan and Franke Decodan Studio Marmorin, Avda. DINING IN ···

DINING IN-SPIRATION We have been dining in a lot more than we probably would have liked to recently, and – bearing in mind our dining area has probably never had so much attention up until now – the dining table and chairs have really had to rise to the occasion. Buying a new dining set is not a process you want to repeat regularly, so choosing a timeless look is highly recommendable. Using natural materials such as oak or teak for your dining table will stand the test of time and will never go out of fashion. A minimalist design is usually a good investment, as you can always accessorise with a gorgeous vase stuffed with fresh blooms as a centrepiece, throw some cosy cushions on the chairs for a more inviting feel or place a rug underneath to soften up the look. Circular or oval dining tables are great space-savers and are easier for chatting around. Rectangular or square tables can provide a more formal look, while extendable tables give you flexibility when unexpected guests arrive for dinner. For a touch of glamour, a low-hanging dimmable pendant lamp or chandelier looming over the table is a great way to add a designer touch, illuminating your culinary creations. If you also use the table for work, it can serve as a handy overhead light for reading.

THINGS AR

HOTTING UP

Radiators used to be merely a practical and often rather ugly device to help heat up the home. Homeowners would frequently encase radiators in wooden covers to hide their unsightly appearance. Over recent years, designers within the sector have shaken up the market with their innovative designs – turning this functional apparatus into sculptural works of art which you would rather show off than hide away.

Pettine is a designer radiator, whose name means “comb” in Italian – representative of its shape, on a large scale. It comes with three, five or seven teeth that can be arranged in different ways to suit a room’s decorative specifications. It is ideal for a bathroom to hang towels (www.antrax.it).

The Step-by-Step radiator from Tubes is made from solid aluminium with pleated elliptical modules that play with the light. Its slimline and linear form provides a contemporary and minimalist look. It comes with a towel-rail and a hook to hang towels or bathrobes, and both accessories are available coloured, glossy or in satin-finish chrome (www.tubesradiatori.com).

ADDING A TOUCH OF LUXURY WITH WINDOW DÉCOR ART Interview with Arte del Lusso CEO Svetlana Dimitrova

If someone decides to freshen up a room by changing the window covering, what is the first thing they should consider? There are actually two primary questions... Does it also need to be for sun protection? What is the situation with privacy? If a homeowner cannot decide between curtains or blinds, what would be your suggestion? I would ask the question, which product makes it more functional without losing the decorative part? We always try to find the best proportion – a balance between the functional and the cosy and decorative. You work with many important brands. Which ones in your opinion are the most innovative, and why? Nature Deco: This company specialises in wooden blinds and produces a range of different models such as roll-up blinds, Roman shades and Venetian blinds, made by hand from all kinds of wood, wallpaper and leather. If you would like to create a combination with your wallpaper, no problem: we can send your wallpaper and they will produce a Venetian blind with slats from the wallpaper. If you want to make a combination with your leather sofa, the same story: we send the leather and they make a beautiful Venetian blind from it. This brand gives us greater opportunities to work in a more decorative way than before. Luxaflex: This company has been operating in the market for 100 years and they are extremely innovative, providing newgeneration blinds for both day and night. Two products in one, with a very beautiful silhouette, silent and intelligent motors, and a modern interface. Take us through the process of when a client comes to you with a project… Mostly, clients will come first to our showroom to talk about their house or project. Some of them have already formed a picture in their head of what it should look like. In that case, we find the 98

MARCH & APRIL 2021

right type of system and fabric in the showroom and go through the project room by room. After deciding on the materials, we will visit the project to take measurements, and we take samples of the chosen fabrics with us to see them at the location, together with the client. If the client doesn’t know exactly what would be the right choice of system and materials, we go first to the location. We see and feel what the house is about, and what is required to create an ideal situation when it comes to sun, privacy and design. We formulate our advice and discuss it with the client to see how they feel about the whole concept. Arte del Lusso has been operating on the Coast for many years now and you always seem very busy. Why do you think you enjoy such resounding success? Quality is the key word. In every process this is our main goal. Quality starts with our initial advice and continues with the high-quality installation of our products. Many customers have already experienced this, and we are pleased to note that their satisfaction is passed on by word of mouth – which has led us to where we are now. Experience is also a key advantage. Our 15 years of experience in different countries –in sun protection, fabrics and window decoration– helps us to understand our clients’ needs and tastes completely and quickly, and undertake their project in the most professional and high-quality way. What have been your most interesting projects, and why? For our team, each client and project is unique and interesting. Our clients come from different countries and they have their own individual tastes. Our mission is to dress up their windows in the most functional and beautiful way, adapting the work to their specific taste and regional climate. Some particularly interesting projects we carried out in 2020 included: 1. Two ultra-modern houses in the heart of El Madroñal, where we provided all the electric roller blind systems and modern French voile curtains. It was an absolute pleasure to see the final result, and work with a young and dynamic team. 2. A private house in the Casares mountains – in a Chinese style. It was very interesting to be able to use totally different, and bold, products and colours, all of which made this property quite distinctive. 3. A private property with stunning six-metre high special handmade curtains made from black plastic pieces. It was a real challenge to deliver those ever-so-delicate curtains and install them six and half metres high. 4. A private property in Finca Cortesín with full sun protection and curtain decoration. We had the opportunity to use only the best of the best… the best electric systems, high-quality fabric brands, and ultra-modern and innovative products in the window decoration market. 5. A private office in Gibraltar with 21 electric day-night systems, all-rectangular lines and integrated into a smart home system. It was a very, very complicated project, from taking the measurements to the final installation, programming and adjustments. It was a great experience for the Arte del Lusso team. FLEXIBLE LIGHTSCAPES FROM DELTA LIGHT TO ACCOMMODATE CHANGING WORK ENVIRONMENTS Committed to improving people’s wellbeing as our work settings evolve rapidly, UNStudio and Delta Light have joined forces to develop the cuttingedge Soliscape system. “The way we work, live and relax is changing,” notes UNStudio’s founder and chief architect Ben van Berkel. “This new hybrid world is causing architects and designers to rethink how we design our cities and buildings, so that we can create places that encourage health and wellbeing. Lighting is a very crucial element in helping us to create such places.” Soliscape is the culmination of a joint investigation by the two companies “to humanise spaces”. It is an extremely versatile and flexible lighting system, specifically designed to create user-centred (or “human-centric”) environments – not only in offices and work spaces. Thanks to its adaptable configuration possibilities, the system has a broad range of applications that can also be used in hotels, and hospitality, retail and public spaces – to best accommodate the daily needs and programming of each location. This feature of the Soliscape is especially relevant in current-day spaces that are evolving to operate with hybrid functions. The home and office are blending, for example; and hospitality spaces are becoming common meeting places. The opportunity to adapt lighting and acoustic landscapes for dual or multi-purpose use is, therefore, an added quality for many of these spaces. “Looking at lighting as just a basic necessity is an outdated approach,” says Delta Light R&D operations manager Peter Ameloot. “Work environments in particular require extra attention, where user-centric lighting has proven to considerably boost productivity and wellbeing. With Soliscape we even take it to the next level, not just by adding acoustic elements, but even more so by using behavioural parameters to further upgrade comfort.” The Soliscape system is, in essence, a toolbox of flexible components and modules for architects and designers that enables them to create workable and liveable solutions for their projects, combining lighting with acoustics and connected sensoring and providing an aesthetically appealing solution that can easily connect to any building management system. The system is also flexible and future-proof, so new materials and functions can be added in the future. Furthermore, while the system comprises basic framing elements, it allows for a variety of complementary sustainable materials to expand its look and feel. More than 60 per cent of the material in the acoustic panels comes from recycled PET bottles, and different materials can be used within the system to facilitate specific functionalities – acoustic, decorative and atmospheric. Controlled and smart lighting also contributes to the building’s overall energy efficiency. Delta Light is available from Illusion in Urb. LIGHTING ···

THE LIGHT OF YOUR LIFE Lighting is key when you want to add ambience and warmth to a room. Ideally, a room should have several lamps to give pockets of light in different areas and to create interest aesthetically – as well as to provide functional illumination where necessary. A bedroom, for example, may need two table lamps each side of the bed for reading plus a pendant or ceiling lamp as a general light to illuminate the whole room. However, a living room could have a floor light to illuminate a leafy palm and a wall sconce to light up a painting, and several table lamps for reading and atmospheric light. Lighting is a make-or-break aspect for any room and, as the amount of natural sunlight varies over the course of the day, lights with dimmer switches are a great way to have the ultimate control over the look and feel of the space.

The Trenta lamp is produced in a numbered and limited edition that was created to celebrate the light bulb and the first 30 “light-years” of Catellani & Smith. Each lamp is guaranteed by a certificate of authenticity, the original of which is signed by Enzo Catellani (www.catellanismith.com).

PREMIER APARTMENT PROJECT IN FUENGIROLA ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY ATLAS GROUP The Costa del Sol continues to gain momentum with international investors... Atlas Group partners with another overseas developer to build a luxury apartment complex.

124

MARCH & APRIL 2021

The Costa del Sol property market remains buoyant, despite the ongoing pandemic, and the area is set to welcome another international venture capitalist. The Moroccan-originating company will be investing in the beachside town of Fuengirola, with a new development of 37 apartments. Continuing to satisfy the demand for property on the Coast, the apartments will range from one-bedroom studios to three-bedroom familysuitable properties. Positioned in the centre of Fuengirola, the properties are within walking distance of the many restaurants and bars in this thriving town. The exteriors will be designed in keeping with traditional Andalucian architecture, to blend in perfectly with the Mediterranean style of the surrounding area, but they will also be fully-fitted with modern and bespoke kitchens, stylish bathroom fixtures, and necessities such as air conditioning and the latest home installations. After much consideration, Atlas Group were the chosen partner to construct the properties, thanks to their track history of comprehensive skill and quality work. A representative from the developer explained that Atlas Group were the perfect partner for the project, as they “have the expertise and knowledge to project manage, and the company is able to navigate the path through the Spanish system and create a fantastic end product”. Atlas Group’s award-winning team of over 100 employees are highly regarded for their integrity and excellence. The company will handle everything regarding the project management and construction.

Long known for the construction of high-end and luxury villas here on the Coast, Atlas Group have also earned a reputation for building developments, expanding into restaurant and hotel refurbishment, and they are currently planning to start another apartment complex in March 2021. According to Director Mike Gregory, “Choosing the right professionals to undertake your project, whether commercial or private, is crucial. The project was designed by leading local architect Mariano Sanchez from ARQUI3 studio. We are excited to partner with another overseas developer on this project, which will be a great addition to Fuengirola but also proves that the property market here on the Costa del Sol is flourishing.” The developers have appointed MarBanus Estates as exclusive selling agents for the project. Established over 15 years ago, Francisco and his team are able to help clients make the most of well-informed decisions throughout the process of purchasing or selling property on the Costa del Sol and, as such, they have built a solid reputation. Atlas Group and MarBanus are looking forward to a lasting business relationship, with more projects in the planning phase in locations including San Pedro de Alcántara (Marbella) and Estepona. BIOPHILIC DESIGN VISION FOR HEALTHY HOMES

126

MARCH & APRIL 2021

GG-loop developed the Mitosis modular building system as part of its mission to “give back to the planet” during the current global situation. The system has been created by a parametric design tool following biophilic and user-centric design principles, with the aim of bringing regenerative collective habitation to all scales of development and serving as a benchmark for the real estate and urban development sector. Believing the need for healthy homes “has hardly ever been more apparent”, the Amsterdam architecture practice claims current efforts to reduce the negative impacts of buildings are inadequate, and therefore the built environment must be designed in a different way. Mitosis’ vision is “to deepen the understanding of its relationship with nature, to raise awareness and sensitise both professionals and the general public regarding the importance of biophilic architecture as an answer to the current climate condition”. Sharing this vision with built environment specialists Arup, GG-loop works “to inspire and provide healthy sustainable living communities and net-positive impacts on ecology and society. By working with the natural environments rather than against it, the natural balance and health of the planet can be restored.” Mitosis is the follow-up to an award-winning pilot project completed by GG-loop in 2019: Freebooter, a pair of prefabricated CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) apartments in Amsterdam, wrapped in a parametric timber louvered façade. “The building was created using biophilic principles, connecting architecture with nature in order to improve the life quality of the people who use the building. GG-loop’s ambition to bring these qualities to multiple scales has resulted in Mitosis.” The name Mitosis refers to the biological process of a single cell dividing itself into two identical daughter cells. “It represents the modularity and the long-term adaptation of the system and serves as a metaphor for a flexible co-living organism where each residential unit coexists in symbiosis with all the others and its environment.” The Mitosis project, according to GG-loop, adopts the 14 principles of biophilic design and articulates the relationships between nature, human biology and the design of the built environment. “It builds an ecosystem where dwellers experience a unique way of living and fulfill their innate desire to reconnect with nature. Exposed to green shared areas, tiny forests, and gardens that cascade up and down the entire building, dwellers can benefit from the direct and indirect connection with nature. Health and well-being are fostered through careful material choices, flexible layouts, organic interiors, and large outdoor spaces.” For founder Giacomo Garziano, GG-loop’s vision goes further than the integration of just green systems, “but rather creates a built environment that restores and nurtures its surroundings, and that serves as a catalyst for positive change. “We are part of nature in a deep and fundamental way, but in our modern lives we’ve lost that connection. In addition to the technical benefits of acoustics improvement, CO2 and urban heat reduction, being in direct contact with nature has proven to improve physical and mental health and overall well-being.” www.gg-loop.com Photos courtesy of v2com and supplied by GG-loop with Hexapixel

REFLECTION TIME FOR THE GARDEN AND TERRACE By Alia Babapulle Alia Babapulle. Interior and Exterior Designer Tel. (+34) 616 670 975 / aliabdesigns@live.co.uk We now need to focus on the settings of our plants, both inside and outside the home. Sometimes things can get a bit boring just staying the same, year after year. How about mixing it all up a little? On a porch, for example, you can do a lot. If you have a cold north-facing porch or terrace, it is a great place for a collection of cacti. There are some wonderful cacti which can cope with a cool wind or quite harsh conditions. You can grow plants there that are protected but open to the elements – able to withstand spartan conditions. You could place a nice big bay tree in a large pot or something with scented foliage. Lemon verbena will also release its lovely scent when you brush past. If the light is not very strong, pop the plants outside from time to time to let them receive some sunshine. You could concentrate summer plants on your porch and create a spectacular display during the warmer months. Lots of plants are suitable, but if you are not sure which to plant ask your garden centre. Jasmine in a big pot will give a wonderful perfume, while plumbago, which has to be strenuously controlled, will look gorgeous. Yoo can either keep all the colours in the same palette or mix them up a bit. Also, change pots and the flowers in them; and perhaps put together a bunch of flowers, growing together, which you would not have done previously. Mix reds with blues, and pinks with purples, and always look 128

MARCH & APRIL 2021

for both shorter and taller plants when doing this, as it adds a better balance. Lots of pretty leaves falling over the pots are also attractive, as are hanging baskets. I am, as you know, a great advocate of moving around plants in pots. It’s the equivalent of getting a new hairstyle. Plants may look good where they are, but sometimes they take on a new lease of life just by putting them somewhere else. I switch my herbs about all the time, and they thrive. You could, on a porch, create a stunning green wall as an entrance to the home. Just make sure that, wherever you do set up a green wall, the back part is strong enough to take it. You certainly don’t want it to come crashing down suddenly. There are lots of excellent ideas on the internet. Hydroponics are a great favourite of mine. Not only do they look good, but they cleanse the air, give out some wonderful perfumes and, in the case of herbs, are the best way to get flavours into your cooking. So, time to reflect on the coming year and your garden/porch/terrace. Sit outside, watch the light and see where you can move things about. How, for example, might even a small change enhance the space. You will be surprised what that new look could do for your mood as well. Stay safe, learn from Mother Nature (she is wonderful) and enjoy your garden.

THE LOVE OF LYON A MELTING POT OF CULTURE AND GASTRONOMY

132

MARCH & APRIL 2021

Home & Lifestyle Magazine recently visited Lyon, a city little talked about amongst European travellers but one that must certainly be experienced – and which is surprisingly easy to get to, no matter where you are coming from. To truly appreciate the city, we chose to stay in the Radisson Blu Hotel in the Tour Part-Dieu (Part-Dieu Tower), situated in the heart of the metropolis. This veritable skyscraper offers a bird’s eye view of the sprawling city and, standing at 165 metres high, it is the 13th tallest building in France. We met some of the charming locals whose passion for their city seemed unbounding, and visited interesting landmarks that make Lyon so special… The building where Radisson Blu resides, often referred to as The Pencil (for obvious reasons) by the locals, was built in 1977 and, 34 years later, Radisson took it over and gave the property a huge reformation in 2016. The circular tower was the inspiration for an interior design that is specific to this particular Radisson hotel. The atrium, situated on the 34th floor together with the reception, is surrounded by arched windows in hallways lined with bedrooms around its perimeter. In fact, nearly everywhere you look in the hotel, there are curved lines to honour the form of the tower itself – which the hotel inhabits. All of the rooms have formidable views out to the city that seem to go on for miles. Due to the architectural restrictions of the tower, the rooms are not very large but oversized windows and strategically placed mir-

Every room has been installed with the latest technology, including USBs and a large high-definition smart television. The beds are large with luxurious Egyptian cotton bed linen, and the bathrooms are contemporary in design with high-quality installations. The Celest restaurant offers a small but carefully designed menu with all locally-sourced fresh ingredients. As well as the à la carte menu, there is also a menu for their brasserie that is ideal for less formal dining. The restaurant is extremely popular not only with hotel residents but also with locals, due to its unsurpassable panoramic view of the city, its esteemed gastronomy and its sophisticated contemporary interior design – so reservations are highly-recommended. Their bar area offers an impressively wide range of spirits (on which they especially pride themselves) but their expertise in beverages does not stop at alcoholic drinks. They also have an impressive coffee and tea area where you can choose your preferred coffee bean or tea leaf and then watch it being transformed into the wonderful steamy hot drink of your desire. The Radisson Blu is excellently located in the heart of Lyon. It is situated next to the second largest commercial centre in France, La Part-Dieu, which offers a veritable maze of shops, bars and restaurants to suffice the appetite of any shopaholic. Lyon is hailed as the capital of gastronomy in France and the hotel just so happens to neighbour the famous Les Halles de Lyon – an exclusive indoor market created by Lyonnais

rors compensate for this by making the most of the panoramic vista and natural sunlight, They also give the optical illusion of spaciousness within the room, helped by clever space-saving cabinetry.

important reference point for gourmands, who can peruse the aisles to view exquisite produce for sale and enjoy drinks and dishes from the bar and restaurant areas. For those with a sweet tooth, there are patisseries all over Lyon. One notable patisserie is Pralus, established since 1948 in Roanne. Their shops are now dotted all around France, with four in Lyon alone. Patisseries are so popular with the locals that it is not unusual to find queues snaking out of the shop doors and down the street. You should try one of Lyon’s traditional brioche á la praline – a soft buttery bun loaded with crushed pralines, usually rose-coloured. You will see them in the windows of nearly

They explained from start-to-finish the process of how they transform their silk yarn into products of such sublime quality and aesthetic beauty that their items are highly desired all over the world. Employing traditional methods, their designs are very contemporary and can be custom-made for individual requirements and tastes. When you dig deep, this humble and unassuming silk shop is actually quite extraordinary. The Brochiers have combined their passion for craftsmanship and art and collaborated with great artists such as Chagall, Miró and Giacometti as well as renowned couturiers including Dior and Patou, making Brochier an impressive global brand, highly-respected in

every patisserie. The Radisson Blu is just a stone’s throw from the historical part of Lyon on the River Saône, overlooked by large residences dating to the Renaissance period, with hidden courtyards and terracotta roofs. In this area you will find the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste and mediaeval streets with charming restaurants, bars and artisan shops. You cannot go to Lyon without visiting one of their Bouchons – convivial, casual-style restaurants offering hearty dishes such as sausage, pâté, meaty stews, fish quenelles and Lyonnaise salad (a robust salad of leaves, usually including frisée, plus strips of bacon, egg, vinegar and Dijon mustard). Bouchons are typically found in Lyon and were introduced in the 17th century when silk workers passed through the city to fill their stomachs with wholesome food and Beaujolais wines after a day’s work. We visited the famous Brochier Soieries silk museum in the historical quarter (Vieux-Lyon) – a family-owned silk manufacturing business opened in 1890 that produces scarves, ties, decorative items and other items. The owners are vibrant, enterprising and passionate, welcoming us with open arms and proudly presenting us with a wide range of their textile artistry.

the world of silk satin with retail outlets worldwide. Lyon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site oozing with culture and historical landmarks, with two large rivers flowing through its centre (the Rhône and the Saône). Located in central-east France, Lyon has easy accessibility to Paris, the French Riviera, Italy and the Alps. The Lyonnais people are very welcoming and friendly, and visiting this vibrant metropolitan city has never been so easy. Regular flights and good train connections and road access make Lyon, which is the third-largest city and second-largest urban area in France, an ideal travel destination for a wide range of reasons.

RIOJA WHERE THE DRINKING IS EASY By AJ Linn

Generally speaking, wine lovers are not too inquisitive about what they drink. Provided it is not downright unpleasant, too young or old, or too cheap or expensive, it will slide down nicely. A cursory glance at the label will be enough to check that the contents of the bottle come from a familiar region, usually Rioja or Ribera del Duero if red, and Rueda or Rías Baixas (Albariño) if white. The fact that there are a total of 60-plus other wine regions on the map of Spain appears not to worry regular wine-drinkers unduly, at least not enough to search out those little-known wines from Pla de Bages, Priorato or Somontano, let alone the impressive range of reds and whites produced on our back doorstep in Andalucía. Maybe the winemakers of Rioja can see the time coming when the word will no longer be synonymous with Spanish red wine. If so, they are to be congratulated for having the foresight to envisage the inevitable. What is known as the “Plan for the Transformation of Rioja” was presented recently by the president of the La Rioja government (its very own legislative body) and it is based on a range of four precise objectives. The only one that needs to bother us here is the establishment of what is known as an “Enorregion” (enological region), focused on Rioja becoming the pivotal theme of viticulture nationally and internationally. Many of us would say that it already is but, taking the long view, how many more decades can this status last? What really matters is that by fortune or design, or both, the region is now producing better wines than ever. A fine example is the Monte Real 136

MARCH & APRIL 2021

brand, from Bodegas Riojanas. This winery was established 125 years ago and is acknowledged as the oldest bodega in the heart of the region’s best production area. Its history is fascinating since, as readers will know, owing to the phylloxera plague that wiped out Spanish vineyards wholesale, new stock had to be brought in from France – and with the stock came a few very competent French winemakers. Many Rioja family businesses can trace their roots back to this era, and indeed it is difficult to assess which was the most important: the vines or the vintners. As possibly the most highly-regarded firm in the entire La Rioja region, Bodegas Riojanas has taken upon itself the praiseworthy task of underwriting the Rioja name worldwide. All but one of the bodega’s wines are one hundred percent made from the classic Spanish grape tempranillo, from the Cencibel area – considered by many to be the purest of the pure as far as grape varieties go (with the other grape variety being graciano). The only white wine of the range is barrel-fermented and quite an eyeopener for those who thought Rioja whites were nothing to write home about. The selection progresses from the Monte Real Cuvée and Crianza, through the outstanding Reservas of Monte Real and Monte Real de Familia, to the Monte Real Gran Reserva 1998 and the Monte Real 125 Aniversario Limited Edition. Starting at prices around €7-8 and rising to €15-16, there is absolutely no doubt that these wines are the most competitively priced from La Rioja, and available locally on the Costa del Sol from Vinomarket.

A PERSONAL COVID-19 EXPERIENCE By Rachel Garrod

Let me prefix this issue’s article with a disclaimer. I am not a medical doctor – I am a Ph.D. qualified physiotherapist. Today’s writing is mainly personal, with a spattering of research. In January, I unfortunately contracted COVID-19. It was not too awful for me but it was most definitely debilitating for a while. In my case about 18 days. Fortunately, I received a negative test result once my symptoms had resolved. Even more fortunately, as a physiotherapist who works with patients with respiratory disease, I received the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine in the first week of February. I thought I would sail through that with little or no systemic effects. In fact, I felt pretty tired and achy for one day, but only one day. The ZOE COVID Symptom Study has been investigating early symptoms post vaccination, recording the effects on 280,000 people. They found that “a third (33 per cent) of those who previously had COVID-19 reported at least one whole body (systemic) after-effect after seven days, compared with 19 per cent of those who had not previously had COVID-19”. This may in fact be a good thing because, as they state, “a larger response like this suggests that those getting a first dose after having had COVID-19 are generating a stronger immune reaction and may get greater protection from just a single shot of the vaccine”. The symptoms post vaccination are generally mild, even mine. According to the report: • 37 per cent of people experienced some local after-effects such as pain or swelling near the site of the injection after the first dose and 45 per cent after the second dose. • 14 per cent of people reported at least one whole body (systemic) after-effect within seven days of the first dose, compared with 22 per cent from the second dose, possibly indicating a stronger immune response after the second dose. Systemic effects included “headaches, fever, chills or shivers, tiredness (fatigue), muscle or joint pains, diarrhoea and feeling sick (nausea)”. Most participants (they were mainly health workers) in the ZOE study said they would take or had taken the vaccine but five per cent did say they were unwilling or hesitant to do so. The reasons for concern were, “long-term side effects (50.2 per cent), lack of knowledge (37.2 per cent) and potential adverse reactions (30.9 per cent)”. It is fair to say we won’t know if there are long-term side effects yet. However, we do know that COVID-19 disease comes with a risk of long-term side effects. We can keep educating ourselves, and hearing about real life experiences is a good way to do that. Best of all, we are learning that immediate side effects are short-lived and mild – in the ZOE study only three per cent of participants had any after-effects that lasted longer than three days. Please keep informing yourselves: the beginning of the end is within sight. From my perspective I feel truly grateful to have received it so early (here in Spain at least) and a bit like Superwoman now! Rachel Garrod Ph.D. M.Sc. – Physiotherapist Tel. LATEST RESEARCH NEWS…

Newly Discovered Health Benefits from Drinking Tea and Coffee

HOT BEVERAGES AND ROBOTIC SURGERY

Adding more tea and coffee drinking to your daily routine may reap some important hidden health benefits. Stroke and heart attack survivors can reduce multiple causes of death and prevent further cardiovascular events by drinking green tea, according to a new Japanese study. Researchers also found daily coffee consumption benefited heart attack survivors by lowering their risk of death after a heart attack, and can prevent heart attacks or strokes in healthy individuals. Previous research has examined the benefits of green tea and coffee on heart health in people without a history of cardiovascular disease or cancer. Researchers studied green tea and coffee consumption and allcause mortality among persons with and without a previous stroke or heart attack. “There is a strong need for scientific evidence on the lifestyles among survivors of stroke and heart attack considering the rapidly ageing population and the need to improve life expectancy following these cardiovascular events,” said study co-author Dr. Hiroyasu Iso, who is a professor of public health at Osaka University in Suita (Japan). The researchers analysed data from more than 46,000 participants between the ages of 40 to 79 from the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study for Evaluation of Cancer Risk, which is a study conducted in 45 communities across Japan. Participants were asked to complete self-administered questionnaires that included information about demographics, lifestyle, medical history and diet. Researchers then analysed the amount and frequency of green tea and coffee consumption. When compared with participants who rarely drank green tea, stroke survivors who consumed at least seven cups of green tea daily lowered their risk of all-cause mortality by approximately 62 per cent. Researchers did not observe a statistically significant association among participants without a history of stroke or heart attack. Heart attack survivors who drank one cup of coffee a day reduced their overall risk of death by approximately 22 per cent when compared to those who did not regularly drink coffee. People without a history of stroke or heart attack who consumed one or more cups of coffee a week had approximately a 14 per cent lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to non-coffee drinkers. In Spain, most people drink black tea so there may be differences from those who regularly drink green tea. “An important distinction to make is that in Japanese culture green tea is generally prepared with water and without sugar. Additionally, coffee is prepared with water and occasionally milk and sugar,” said Dr. Iso. “The healthiest way to prepare these beverages is without an unnecessary amount of added sugars.”

was associated with decreased pain after surgery, improved early functional recovery and a shorter hospital stay. Dr. Westrich, who is an American surgeon specialising in knee and hip replacement, reached a milestone last year when he performed his 500th robotic-assisted knee replacement. He uses the MAKO robotic system, which is FDA-approved for both total and partial knee replacements. “Joint replacement is highly successful in relieving arthritis pain and improving quality of life, and the robotic system allows us to really customise the procedure for each patient,” said Dr. Westrich. “The MAKO system allows for optimal alignment and positioning of the knee implant, as well as optimal ligament balancing, all critically important for the best outcome and long-term success of the surgery. Such precision could potentially lead to a longer-lasting knee replacement.” Dr. Westrich says over the past few years he has seen more patients in their 40s and 50s with arthritis who are candidates for a knee replacement. The main concern for patients in this age group is that the implant may wear out over time. Although a knee replacement could last 20 years or even longer, it doesn’t last indefinitely. For younger individuals, in particular, robotic-assisted surgery has made joint replacement an attractive option, as it could prolong the life of the implant, according to Dr. Westrich. With a robotics approach, a CT scan is taken of the patient’s knee. The scan is then uploaded into the system software where a 3D model of the joint is created. The 3D model is used to plan and assist the surgeon in performing the joint replacement. In the operating room, the orthopedic surgeon controls a robotic arm that uses computer guided mapping software, similar to GPS, integrated into the surgical instruments to position the implant in the knee joint. The digital tracking system constantly monitors and updates the patient’s anatomy and enables the surgeon to make real time adjustments to optimise implant placement, alignment, ligament balance and joint motion. This provides each patient with a personalised surgery tailored to his or her individual anatomy. “With more accurate alignment and positioning, the implant should experience less wear and friction, and it could ultimately last longer,” said Dr. Westrich, who notes that studies will be needed to confirm this over the long term.

Robotics May Be New Tool for Knee Replacement Surgery In a career spanning more than two decades, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Geoffrey Westrich has seen numerous advances in joint replacement surgery that benefit patients. However, he thinks the promise of robotic-assisted knee replacement, which allows for an ultraprecise procedure, may be one of the most exciting new advances. A recent study by researchers in the United Kingdom found robotic-assisted total knee replacement HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

PORTRAITS OF HUMANITY AND HOPE FROM AROUND THE WORLD 140

MARCH & APRIL 2021

One of the key objectives of British Journal of Photography’s annual “Portrait of Humanity” award is to provide a broad spectrum of visual stories from around the world. During 2020 this was especially poignant, and the 2021 winners reflect that year of unprecedented struggle after which, according to the organisers, “the message of hope, courage, reflection and resilience is now more important than ever”. The 33 winners – 30 single images and three bodies of work – will be exhibited in the Portrait of Humanity Global Tour, initially until 7 March at PHOTO 2021 in Australia and later at the Belfast Photo Festival (3-30 June) and Indian Photo Festival (September). In addition, 200 shortlisted single images will be featured in the Portrait of Humanity Vol. 3 Book, and the three winning bodies of work in British Journal of Photography. “The curation,” notes British Journal of Photography, “presents a vast and moving exploration of what it means to be human at a momentous time in our history.” Portrait of Humanity is a global award by 1854 Media, publisher of British Journal of Photography. Evolving from Portrait of Britain – an award focused on capturing the many faces of modern Britain – Portrait of Humanity was conceived “to show that across oceans and borders there is more that unites us than sets us apart”.

ALEXA VACHON – MITRA

In the Words of the Photographers… The three series winners are Alexa Vachon, Edgar Martins and Hyoyeon Kim. Edgar Martins: “What Photography and Incarceration Have in Common With an Empty Vase” – the product of a collaboration with HM Prison Birmingham (UK), its inmates and their families. “Prison, as an institution, is the only place where power is manifested in its raw state, in its most excessive form, and where it is justified as moral force. In that sense, (the project) tells us that, for all the advances we have made as a species, we still have a long way to go to recognise the humanity in others.” Alexa Vachon: “Grounded” – an interrogation of the layered experiences of amateur international women football players in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Lebanon, Pakistan, and Germany. “The first time I met women players was during a football conference in Berlin in 2014. While from various religious, economic and cultural backgrounds, I came to see the common thread through all of their stories: the fight for the right for women and girls to play soccer and to be recognised as equals in their communities.” Hyeoyon Kim: “Abnormal Senses” – testimonials by generations of people descended from Hiroshima 1945 atomic bomb survivors. “What I’ve clearly learned during my work is that the event occurred on a day 75 years ago across the sea, and yet still has a harsh and valid ripple effect across generations. (The project) is the dearest letter from grandmother to mother, mother to her daughter, and daughter to her child, who will be born in the future.”

VILLA TULUM

A TRIBUTE TO N AT U R E IN MARBELL A Villa Tulum is the latest project by Gonzalez Casaus Arquitectura & Interiorismo in Sierra Blanca (Marbella), a tropical-inspired home that marks a new trend in architecture. Architect Alexis González and interior designer Lucía Casaus founded the studio in 2017 “to forge a creative binomial”, and the union of their specialties has enabled them to provide added value to clients – with projects that combine design and functionality, beginning from the inside. Villa Tulum is a tribute to nature with an avantgarde concept of space, both its integration into the environment and the use of natural materials and warm, customised furniture and multi-functional spaces that adapt to modernday housing needs. The main essence and objective of the project was to make the most of the environment by creating a private oasis. “Our inspiration has been nature itself,” they explain. “Taking advantage of the plot’s topography, we have optimised the spaces, creating a home that, rather than stand apart from nature, fully integrates nature into its whole interior area.” Villa Tulum is a 360-degree project for which everything has been carefully considered “out of the box”, and they have managed to stamp their personal imprint with a new vision of architecture. www.gonzalezcasaus.com Instagram: @gonzalezcasaus

METAMORFOZA

NEW OUTDOOR FURNITURE S H OW RO O M I N M A R B E L L A The origins of Jati & Kebon lie in the family business Verbeke. Initially, teak furniture was imported on a modest scale from Indonesia, where high-quality teak wood and traditional craftsmanship are abundant. In order to meet increasing demand, it was decided to set up their own production unit in both China and Indonesia. As a result, quality was even better controlled and containers could be shipped directly from the factory to major furniture retailers and garden centres worldwide. Today the customer base is spread around more than 30 countries. Sole company Garden Consulting & Investment maintained its headquarters in Deinze, but also established a sales office in Hong Kong, strategically located between its own factories and Australia. Now they have also opened a new showroom, Metamorfoza, in the Oasis Business Centre in Marbella, offering all latest collections of outdoor furniture – in different materials. Teak is no longer the only raw material used. For years now, outdoor furniture has been produced in aluminum and braided rope, as well as fabrics and cushions in sun and water-resistant Sunbrella, and even table tops in high-quality ceramic. Through it all, quality has remained synonymous with everything the brand produces. marbella@metamorfoza.es www.metamorfoza.es

TRIPLE A

U R G E N T H E L P N E E D E D F O R A B A N D O N E D A N I M A LS Due to the pandemic many people have lost their jobs as businesses along the Coast have been forced to close. For Triple A, closure is not an option, as it would have fatal consequences for the abandoned animals they look after. Previously, Triple A held events to raise funds to pay for veterinary treatments, special food, blankets, etc., but coronavirus restrictions have meant the charity has not been able to hold such events, thus losing out on a very important source of income. Also, public donations have significantly decreased, and now Triple A is in a critical situation. If you would like Triple A to continue, they ask you to please consider increasing your membership fee or make a donation through Pa yPal: admin@tripleamarbella.org. Or you can make a transfer to Banco Sabadell (with reference SOS PANDEMIC) to the following account: IBAN: ES20 0081 7460 6300 01010211, BIC/SWIFT: BSABESBB. VALUABLE TIPS ABOUT PROPERTY CONVEYANCING IN SPAIN Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants The first step in property conveyancing in Spain is finding a property, and it is imperative to get to know the area before you make your choice. You should visit different locations in order to make an educated decision, while additional research into similar properties in various areas will give you different perspectives of what you can anticipate in terms of price. The second step is choosing an expert property lawyer in Spain, one who can impart useful advice from the beginning of the purchasing process. Your lawyer will make enquiries to ensure that all the parties involved (including the seller or developer) are acting legitimately, and take the necessary measures to make sure all Spanish legal requirements are met. Additionally, a legal firm will ensure that the property is free of any encumbrances that could affect your use of the land. You will also need to check that there are no outstanding debts for local taxes or service charges attached to the property. Ensuring that you have all the necessary documents will expedite the legal process of property conveyancing. You should register copies of the following documents with your lawyer or estate agent when you place your property up for sale: • “Escritura Pública” (Title Deed). • Latest “Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles” (IBI – real estate tax) receipt. • “Certificado Catastral”, which contains your property’s official reference number (“Referencia Catastral”) with the Land Registry and gives a complete description of the property. 146

MARCH & APRIL 2021

• Latest “Declaración de la Renta” (Spanish income tax declaration). • Comunidad de Propietarios (residents’ association) information. • All current utility bills. A typical conveyancing transaction includes two vital landmarks: the exchange of contracts and the completion, whereby the legal Title Deed passes. In addition, the system of conveyancing is generally constructed to ensure that the buyer secures title to the land together with all the rights that govern the land and is advised of any limitations in advance of the purchase. Moreover, the cost of conveyancing is dependent on whether you employ a foreign or Spanish lawyer. Conveyancing in Spain holds some differences when compared to conveyancing all over the world. These differences include that the drawing up of the initial deed and the witnessing of the signatures can only be accomplished by a public notary. A notary represents the government by fortifying that state taxes are paid on the completion of a sale. Welex Lawyers & Accountants C/ Ramón Gómez de la Serna 23, Local 7, Marbella Tel.
