EDITOR’S NOTE 8

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2022

It seems quite remarkable but we are now beginning a third calendar year of the coronavirus era. Nearly two (chronological) years since the outbreak of the most unprecedented and unpredictable global health upheaval in our lives, the daily news bulletins and social media posts remain dominated by COVID-19 and its ongoing repercussions (and variants). It’s not just the “hard news” of updated recommendations and latest statistics, because from early-2020, throughout 2021 and now into 2022, just about every aspect of our lifestyles has invariably involved some reference to or been influenced by the pandemic. Including our own world of home décor and design – and specifically latest colour trends. In our last issue, we reported that Dulux had announced that their colour of the year for 2022 would be “Bright Skies”, as we “long for a fresh approach and a new start”. Now, both Pantone and Shutterstock have joined the colours party. Declaring that “serenity” would be taking centre stage in 2022 (how we wish!), Shutterstock revealed that their data analysts and design experts had “ploughed through billions of bits of data to reveal what colours the design world is gravitating towards next. And this time around we’ve included added insights from www.shutterstock.ai, uniquely capable of deciphering how a specific colour performs in digital media.” And their conclusions? The colours “climbing the charts in the year to come” are: “Calming Coral”, “Velvet Violet” and “Pacific Pink”, with green (emerald, jade, lime and mint) also “reigning supreme”. So that brings us to Pantone, arguably the pre-eminent colour authority for the international design community. Opting for the rather curiously named “Very Peri” hue, they say it “helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives”. Described as encompassing the qualities of blues while also possessing a violet-red undertone, “PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing, and our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways. Digital design helps us to stretch the limits of reality, opening the door to a dynamic virtual world where we can explore and create new colour possibilities.” Finally, the colour-fest season aside, the major industry exhibitions are taking tentative steps to move on from the Zoom presentations of 2020 and 2021 and resume a more presential program of events this year. First off the rank (obviously, depending on pandemic developments after Home & Lifestyle Magazine went to press) will be Maison&Object. The theme for their Paris show, from 20 to 24 January, is “New luxuries: between Über luxury and Lux populis”. The former, they explain, “combines fine crafts with new technology, with one foot in the past and the other firmly in the future”, while the latter “rides the pop culture wave, taking inspiration from street culture, driven by a generation raised on reality TV, Instagram and Tik Tok, and attentive to values of inclusion”. The organisers pledge that “the safety of our clients is at the core of our preoccupations”. This is a reassuring sentiment that we can only hope prevails in the wider society as another year with COVID begins – amidst continuing caution but also tinged with a dose of patient optimism that things will surely improve over time.

LIVING ROOMS ...

TAKING THE PLUNGE IN YOUR LOUNGE If you’re becoming a little fed up with your living room – after all, we have had to spend more time than usual in this room recently – then switching it up doesn’t have to be an expensive project. Of course, a new sofa is a fabulous way to make an impact but not an investment you necessarily want to make very often. Keep the room uncluttered with good cabinetry and, if space is limited, consider a coffee table with built-in drawers or shelving to store away everyday objects such as remote controls, placemats etc. Side tables are often forgotten but in a larger room they serve as useful resting surfaces when the coffee table, which normally takes centre stage, is a little out of reach. It is important to stress that these little tables don’t just have to be boringly functional. They can also add a decorative element to the room, so have fun choosing one. Lighting that is dotted around the room is always a pleasant way to make the space feel cosy and inviting. It is perfectly acceptable (depending on the space available, of course) to have table lamps, dimmable wall sconces, a statement floor lamp and a chandelier all in the same room. Having layered lighting gives you options for the particular illumination you require at the time. For example, for reading, perhaps an overhanging floor lamp or a table lamp offering direct light would be the best option, while pockets of table lamps are better for soft ambient lighting – especially ideal for relaxing with friends or family or when you want to watch a film. Fabrics are a great way to give your room a new lease of life, so upholstering a tired chair or pouf, adding some new cushion covers or changing the curtains can be a simple option to update the look of the room. Give your walls a lick of paint or dress them with a contemporary wallcovering. Or, if you’re feeling brave, go for a feature wall or a piece of artwork to add an artistic focal point to the room. And don’t forget your floor… a good-quality cosy rug is always an inviting feature.

Opposite Page The M.a.s.s.a.s sofa from Patricia Urquiola for Moroso comprises rounded blocks that offer a soft informal aesthetic whilst also showcasing its perfectly creased edges and high-quality craftmanship. San Pedro de Alcántara (www.acoola.eu) and Siesta Interior Design in Centro Plaza, Nueva Andalucía (www.siestainteriordesign.com).

DRESSING YOUR WINDOWS Curtains are not only decorative but also highly functional. Depending on the material, they provide privacy and can block out glaring sunlight, dust, noise and wind, enabling you to keep your windows open while enjoying fresh air from outside. If a room is dark, perhaps consider white and sheer curtains so that light can still filter through while ensuring privacy at the same time. Linen has become quite fashionable and it drapes beautifully. The fabric is easily washable and it allows air to pass through, so linen is especially popular in warmer countries. Blackout curtains are often chosen for bedrooms as they effectively block out the light, allowing you to sleep more soundly. They are also useful for thermal insulation and for reducing noise. Busy patterns on curtains can overwhelm a room, especially if space is limited, but don’t be afraid to enter into the world of motifs as they can also make a real design statement in a room with a neutral colour palette. Always try to employ a professional to hang your curtains so that they are evenly mounted and expertly draped – it will pay-off and give the room a finished look.

A ROOM BEYOND YOUR DREAMS If you are thinking of updating your bedroom, investing in a high-quality bed will never fail to pay-off in the long run. And, after all, a good night’s sleep sets you up for the day – uplifting your mood and making you more productive. Nowhere else in the home is it more important to think about textures than in the bedroom, so fluffy cushions and throws, a gorgeous soft rug, a padded headboard and good-quality bed linen will instantly make the room feel welcoming. If your bedroom is small, clever storage solutions are a must to keep the space organised and the mind restful – a busy room results in a busy mind. However, the bedroom doesn’t have to be minimalist. Create a space that is personal to you, with items that you appreciate to provide character – perhaps a painting that you enjoy or a statement mirror.

OUTDOOR LIVING ...

ENJOYING THE OUTDOORS THIS WINTER In the winter months it might seem difficult for many people to think about buying furniture for their outside space. However, the outdoor life for residents in southern Spain is all year round, which is why our outdoor furniture requires so much focus during all the seasons. On the whole, residents on the Costa del Sol are blessed with wonderful weather throughout the year but, when extreme weather does arrive, our furniture needs to be able to withstand these conditions – so investing in good-quality furniture is extremely important. With the recent delays in shipping deliveries, it is wise to consider buying ahead of time so that, when spring arrives, you can enjoy your terrace in style!

Manutti’s Flex seating system has a lightweight aesthetic but its aluminium frame makes it highly durable. It features a handcrafted wood finish which gives this collection its sophisticated appeal. Designer Matthew Townsend created the Cobi range of coffee tables to complement Manutti’s existing furniture collections in brushed teak and teak scuro finish that can be combined with ceramic inlays. KITCHEN DESIGN IDEAS With the kitchen playing such an important role in the home in recent times due to the pandemic, it comes as no surprise that more homeowners than ever have chosen to make updates in this area. Changing cupboard fronts, faucets or a worktop can be quite transformational, and adding a well-thought-out storage solution such as shelving, cabinetry and compartmentalised drawers helps clear work areas and makes the room feel instantly more organised. Natural materials such as wood and stone have made a big splash in the kitchen in recent times, creating a more welcoming and organic feel. The move towards turning the kitchen into a more social area rather than simply a functional one has seen a growing number of bar islands being added to kitchen plans, which provides extra worktop space while bringing the household together for casual dining and social gatherings. Cooking should be a joy not a chore, so make this area of your home not just practical but beautiful, like your culinary delights!

DINING IN ...

TASTEFUL DINING AREAS As we are now at the start of a new year, more people are dining at home to save money after the heavy expenses that Christmas festivities inevitably brought. Even though the pandemic has made many people tired of cooking at home, others have started to embrace it. The dining table brings the home – and friends – together to enjoy homemade food that has been seasoned with love. One other certainty following the pandemic is that there are more people than ever working from home, often turning their dining tables into desks for work – and study if they have children. Without doubt the dining room is now a less common part of the contemporary home, and instead we are seeing more informal dining areas within an open plan living room and/or kitchen. Bar areas are also a great addition to the modern home, providing an area for socialising and casual dining. When choosing your dining table, you need to consider its size carefully, ensuring that there will be plenty of space to walk around when diners are seated. On the other hand, be careful not to go too small – and make sure you allow for your usual number of guests to sit comfortably. If space is limited, the general rule is to go for a circular table, whilst rectangular tables are better for a larger room.

TRENDS FOR TABLES When entertaining guests, your tableware contributes to setting the tone for your dinner party. It goes without saying that classic white bone China or porcelain plates give an elegant and more formal look to a table setting, but stoneware plates, wooden bowls and earthenware are a great way to offer a more casual dining experience. The trend for organic-shaped tableware with uneven edges and earthy colours has heightened in recent years, with each piece having its own unique aesthetic. However, highquality porcelain will always hold a strong place for gastronomes, and this end of the market has been constantly evolving in terms of design, texture and form. Here are some ideas…

LIGHTING ...

Delightful

ILLUMINATION Lighting is a mood-changer. If the illumination is dim, you are put in a relaxed state-of-mind, but if the light is bright it can increase your energy levels and productivity. Though lighting has to be functional, it also needs to be pleasing to the eye, which is why there is a lot to consider when choosing lighting solutions for your home. If you are short on space, perhaps consider dimmable wall or ceiling lamps, while for large rooms pockets of light in various areas of the room are an attractive way to make the space cosy and welcoming. Now that winter is truly here, and the evenings become darker earlier, lighting is more important than ever.

THERE’S MORE WITH WALLS… These days we don’t want all of our walls to have crazy colours and busy patterns like in years gone by. Now the trend is subtlety, with natural tones and textures. The recent demand for depictions of nature within the world of wallcoverings, such as exotic animals and botanicals to adorn the walls that surround us, is simply a normal reaction to the world we are currently living in. The reality is that homeowners had a desire for designs derived from nature before the pandemic started, but now these tastes have been enhanced as a result of COVID. However, let’s not forget statement walls, as they play an important role in adding an artistic touch to a living space, no matter where they sit in the home. In a bedroom, bathroom or living room, or even on an outside wall, they provide a personal touch and a creative expression of who you are.

BEAUTIFYING THE BATHROOM It would be fair to say that bathrooms have become less glitzy and more earthy in recent years. Natural materials such as stone, wood and botanicals have crept into this area of the home, and this can only be a good thing. We all want the same feeling when entering a bathroom, one that gives the sensation of visiting a health spa or expensive hotel ensuite bathroom – with the likes of a contemporary washbasin and toilet, a rain shower, an oversized bath, smooth surfaces, beautiful cabinetry and a large mirror with (of course) complementary lighting. These days bathrooms make the most of the available space, allowing the homeowner to enjoy the room without clutter and with low maintenance. This is achieved with good storage solutions, a wellplanned layout and carefully selected materials that are both hardwearing and easy to keep clean. Large tiles are highly recommended as they give the feeling of space and are more hygienic, with fewer ridges for dirt and bacteria to fester. Modernising your bathroom on a budget could be as simple as updating your taps, or adding a feature wall or a new mirror, while a good shelving unit is a must to store away unsightly toiletries and accessories.

Ultimately, I wanted High-End Homes’ showroom to become a place where I could share my love and enthusiasm for Scandinavian design with others – a place for people to admire and become inspired by all the beautifully designed pieces I love so much, and to experience it for themselves. And so I created a place where people can drop in just to look, or to buy anything from a coffee table book to a one-of-a-kind piece of art. But it’s also an inspiring place to visit for real estate developers, investors or our private consulting clients who want help decorating their homes, where they get an opportunity to immerse themselves in the style, and “try it on”, so to

MAJOR INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION PLANS FOR

GC STUDIO INTERVIEW WITH LUCIA CASAUS AND ALEXIS GONZÁLEZ

When interior designer Lucia Casaus and architect Alexis González founded GC Studio – formerly González Casaus – in Marbella, they focused on the concept of creating a distinctive style for luxury residences and villas, backed by a fully dedicated service for clients. Now the rebranded firm is expanding internationally, with new high-end projects in Rome, Paris and Los Angeles. Currently, the highly creative duo are designing projects that are being sold for more than €20 million.

What are the most exceptional international projects you are working on as a studio? It would not be fair to elevate one above the other. Each one represents a different challenge for our studio and an opportunity to project, in a challenging way, our concept of architecture and interior design. We have just returned from Rome, where we are building a villa in one of the most exclusive areas of the Italian capital, while in Spain we have started work on 50 luxury apartments in what will be one of the most iconic building towers in Málaga. We are also developing offices in the Plaza de la Concorde in Paris, with a surface area of more than 7,000 square metres. Another project that makes us especially excited, as it represents our leap to the American continent, is the development of a villa on the California coast. How does GC Studio promote its vision of architecture and interior design beyond its borders? The initial idea underlying the foundation of our studio was not to implement a single vision of architecture and interior design, but rather to offer our own response to the different aspects of both that are posed by any project. In line with this premise, our studio has always understood that the boundaries of the conceptual and the technical do not exist, and that it is the client’s desire, together with our experience, that is shaping the final result of each project.

144

Do all future plans require a specific perspective? What are the keys to defining the future for GC Studio? Clearly all international expansion requires focus and study on what is being done beyond our territory. This is a constant learning process that we combine with our own work model, consisting of discussing with our entire team the options for each project. This helps us assess all possible perspectives and make the right decisions. Confidence in our work is the key to defining the studio’s future. This is what has prompted our clients to continue committing to us when they undertake investments outside the national sphere.

promotion at an international level. Marbella has been the door to our expansion beyond the national territory as our clients, in some way, want to transfer part of the special Mediterranean ecosystem to their countries of origin. Architecture and interior design are two tools that can be used to achieve this, and we will certainly work hard to balance all these projects as they grow.

How do you combine your projects in Marbella with the international expansion that you are undertaking? Marbella has been a great opportunity for our studio. Its power to attract investment has enabled us to carry out projects at the level of what we have always aspired to, and this has provided us with enormous marketing

BESPOKE SOUND & VISION GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

146

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2022

High-end luxury equipment used by Bespoke Sound & Vision gives the ultimate wow factor for any project completed in a villa, and it cannot be rivalled in quality and performance. Clients are excited and pleased with their home entertainment, sound and vision systems, all highlighted by the finest quality installations and with minimum disruption. Teaming up with the leading companies for sound, vision and smart home automation, Bespoke Sound and Vision offers customers the ultimate in high fidelity sound and stunning visual clarity for all home entertainment systems. The latest in speaker technology includes Klipsch, Artcoustic, Bose and Krix Audio. These brands might not be in the forefront of many people’s minds, but they all represent and deliver the most realistic home entertainment experience. To achieve an experience that most closely mirrors a visit to the cinema, each room is individually designed using the correct technology for each project and achieving “reference level” sound and visuals. Dolby Atmos speaker layouts create the most immersive sound possible, ensuring that all cinema effects can be heard across, above and to the sides of the room, supported by a dedicated bass system to fully represent all “big” sounds from the movie. Every aspect of the dedicated cinema room is designed by Bespoke Sound & Vision, including carpentry, decoration, acoustic fabric walls, lighting and easily-usable intuitive control systems. As winter is currently with us, and there is ample time to make forward plans, Bespoke Sound & Vision can now include the most efficient air-conditioning systems to add to its list of projects for a property. Controls for the climate air-conditioning and heating systems are connected to a mobile phone for ease of usage. Meanwhile, the latest news is that Bespoke Sound & Vision has agreed to be a dealership with basIP and Genesis HTC. The former is an automated door entry, control and security system provider, using the latest smart home technology that has been successfully installed in properties worldwide. Genesis is also one of the top acoustic supply companies, providing the latest and greatest in sound technology using Nexus 21, Artcoustic and VSSL – to name but a few. The need for the most efficient and faultless internet is essential for all smart home and home entertainment systems, and this can be installed by Bespoke Sound & Vision using various options, including Ruckus. This is the ultimate in

internet technology and, teamed with an Elan smart home, Marantz, Denon or Yamaha, there is nothing left to achieve or deliver for any client wanting a smart or wow factor home. In practice, Bespoke Sound & Vision provides a “one stop shop” for all home automation, cinema, sound, air-conditioning, security and entry systems – installed by professional, dedicated and multilingual staff and specialists. From design and integration to installation in record time, Bespoke Sound & Vision delivers clients’ needs and desires – whatever is required. With requests for services growing, Bespoke Sound & Vision has invested in additional qualified staff and is training new employees to the required high standards to respond more quickly to ever-growing demand. Currently, three or four projects are being worked on simultaneously in various villas and properties stretching from Sotogrande to Málaga. However, nothing is left to chance: owners are always just a phone call away from Bespoke Sound & Vision, giving them peace of mind if there are additional questions or requests. So, why choose Bespoke Sound & Vision for a cinema, sound or home automation project? We asked director Ralph Ehlers… “As one of the leading installers of smart home technology we were chosen to bring to life the dreams of a luxury villa owner who wanted to simplify controlling the entire home. The brief from the client was simple, ‘Make things easy and give me the wow factor’. Our answer: ‘Okay, done’ – just two months later”. According to Ralph, the secrets to Bespoke Sound & Vision’s success are being multinational and multilingual, with offices in both Spain and the UK, combined with a deep knowledge of cutting-edge technology, 50-plus years of experience in craftsmanship, excellent customer service, and – most importantly – using the finest products in the market. “In today’s fast moving, ever more challenging world, remote control and security are paramount. Combine this with the greatest desire for the best sound, light and visual clarity, and there is only one company that a client can rely upon, Bespoke Sound & Vision”.

A record number of submissions for the 2021 Architecture MasterPrize not only showcased stellar projects around the world but also served to provide inspiration for future architects. According to the organisers, the jury panel (comprising renowned architects, academics and industry experts) was particularly impressed by the awardwinning entries’ high level of innovation and creativity, and how they highlighted smart design in both form and function that will inspire the next generations of architects. “We were blown away by the quality of AMP entries this year,” said head of communications David Tera. “The level of ingenuity showcased in the projects was both impressive and inspiring. This year’s winners have shown exceptional talent and have set a new benchmark for architectural design. The AMP jurors were pleased to see how many of the projects emphasised sustainability, offering solutions to our ever-changing world and environmental challenges, proving that innovative design goes beyond aesthetics.” This was the sixth edition of the Architecture MasterPrize, which was established to promote the AMP’s mission to advance the appreciation of quality architectural design worldwide, and to celebrate creativity and innovation in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, product design and architectural photography.

The 2021 AMP awards included the first edition of the architectural photography program, as well as yearly programs celebrating the greatest architectural and product designs in four categories covering design, firms, products and photography. • Architectural Design of the Year – The Arc at Green School Bali by IBUKU • Interior Design of the Year – Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet By Atelier Brückner • Urban Design of the Year – Eleftheria Square By Zaha Hadid Architects • Architecture Firm of the Year – Vo Trong Nghia Architects • Interior Design Firm of the Year – Norm Architects • Landscape Design Firm of the Year – TURF Design Studio • Exterior Photographer of the Year – Rafael Gamo • Interior Photographer of the Year – Félix Michaud • Architectural Product of the Year – Heavy Duty Solar Canopy by Pvilion In addition to the top winners, the jury also awarded the “Best of Best” distinction to projects that received the highest scores across all categories. The winners are now highlighted on the AMP website, and their designs will be featured in the AMP Book of Architecture, to be distributed globally. www.architectureprize.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES 2022

A LAP OF LUXURY IN THE HEART OF LISBON

PALÁCIO PRÍNCIPE REAL

154

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2022

The recently opened Palácio Príncipe Real hotel is described by owners Miles and Gail Curley as an “oasis” in the heart of Lisbon, and no other word could more accurately define this very special place created by the talented couple. Situated close to the buzzing Bairro Alto area, the hotel has wonderful restaurants, bars and sightseeing spots right on its doorstep. Its central location might suggest noise and chaos, but this could not be further from the truth. Palácio Príncipe Real offers a haven of tranquillity and respite within the hustle and bustle of the streets that surround it, celebrating the natural beauty of expansive grounds and outstanding Portuguese architecture and décor, which was the inspiration behind the huge restoration project that this building went through for it to be authentically resurrected in all its glory. The 19th century building was formerly a palatial home for the distinguished Teixeira da Mota family up until the 1980s, before being turned into offices. When Miles and Gail acquired the property, they decided against opening a hotel with numerous rooms and instead opted for fewer rooms where guests can rejoice in large luxurious spaces. When you arrive at Palácio Príncipe Real your senses are instantly aroused. The already well-established grounds put you immediately at ease, with the soothing sound of trickling water from the fountain and birds tweeting among the tall trees. On entering the hotel, you are met with friendly smiles, relaxing music and the delicate scent of aromatic candles; and then you start to focus on where you have actually just walked into… a refined stately home that is a veritable feast for the eyes, both decoratively and architecturally.

In terms of design, the British duo – who have resided in London, Singapore, Madrid and Mallorca – drew most of their inspiration from personal luxury travel experiences. Every room has a freestanding bath from the prestigious British bathroom company Drummonds, renowned worldwide for their deluxe classic English style, while the exquisite bedlinen, candles, furniture and stone were all locally sourced from Portugal. One charming décor feature is the Indian runner duck which can be observed on furniture pieces dotted around the hotel – a bird that Miles became particularly fond of whilst in Asia. The decision to build a zen-like heated outdoor swimming pool at the end of the garden is another nod to their Far Eastern travels. A grand staircase from the reception area leading up to the rooms sets the scene for what follows. When you look up, you notice the ceilings soaring above, with detailed stucco work and glistening chandeliers. Underfoot, wooden floors are laden with thick luxurious carpet, whilst in other areas there is checked black and white flooring for a touch of neoclassicalism. All of the bedrooms at the Palácio Príncipe Real have their own personalities, but always maintaining the same high standards throughout and paying the ultimate respect to the building’s heritage. Therefore, if there were original Portuguese tiles in a room before the renovation, the tiles can still be observed there today – a constant reminder of the history of this aweinspiring building. Each room is facilitated with a Smeg refrigerator, Dyson hairdryer and Nespresso machine, and even a yoga mat to boot, so a few modern touches HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES 2022

have been added to give an extra level of comfort. All of the 28 bedrooms are highlighted by towering windows that allow natural light to flood inside whilst offering views to the Edenesque garden outside. At breakfast, guests gather in the intimate dining area on comfy pink velvet seating at tables adorned with crisp white tablecloths and delightful Portuguese tableware. The room is elegant yet the ambience is casual, with Miles and Gail milling around greeting and chatting with guests, exchanging local information and giving personal recommendations to set you up for a perfect day to discover the city. The all-day breakfast offering was more than satisfactory, with the likes of seasonal fresh fruit, tomato on toasted sourdough with avocado, and various egg options for a heartier meal. Lisbon is a city with a great deal to offer. Its hilly streets can initially be daunting (kick off those stilettos, Cinderella, and get those walking boots 156

on!) but you soon get used to the inclines – with so much to see and enjoy around you. The ubiquitous mosaic pavements, alluring architectural styles and genuine warmth of the Portuguese locals all make this vibrant coastal city a joy to wander around by foot. If it all gets too tiring, you can jump on one of Lisbon’s famous funiculars to give those legs a rest. With regular inexpensive direct flights from Málaga, Lisbon is a hop, skip and a jump for those residing in southern Spain who would like to immerse themselves in authentic Portuguese culture, history, design inspiration and, last but certainly not least, exceptional gastronomy. “Foodies” – you won’t be disappointed! “We always have a reason to drink Champagne” – Helle

Coquinas (or wedge clams) are light and delicious, and brilliant as tapas, a snack, a starter or the crown of any shellfish main course. They also go well together with a healthy lifestyle, as they are rich in folate (B-vitamin), B12, selenium, chromium and protein. Therefore, I thought that this recipe would be perfectly timed just after the festive season, when many people are looking to get back into shape. The coquina lives in shallow water, especially in the Cádiz and Huelva areas here in Andalucía, which gives us the pleasure of savouring one of our local products. What perhaps keeps many people from using all the wonderful recipes available for this clam (and other species) is that they often come across as an unpleasant experience if not cleaned properly, with crunches of sand between the teeth. My best advice is to spend sufficient time making sure they are cleaned well before use, and here is how you do it… After thoroughly cleaning the fresh shells with running cold water, put them in a large surface bowl and cover with cold salty water – approximately 20 grams of salt per litre of water. If possible, place the clams in only one layer, to ensure they don’t spread sand onto any other clams below. Change the water after 15 minutes and be careful to separate the clams from the sand. Repeat this process as many times as necessary, until there is no more sand on the bottom of the bowl, then rinse again with normal cold water and you’re ready to do magic in the kitchen. Ingredients (Serves 4 people) 1 kg fresh coquinas 6 garlic cloves in slices 2 finely cut shallots 1 shot of your favourite virgin olive oil 1 large spoonful butter juice from ½ lemon freshly chopped parsley Maldon flake salt and pepper to taste 1 glass of Champagne or cava (plus one glass for the chef) 158

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2022

Prepare a one-minute sauté of the garlic and shallots in olive oil in a frying pan, at a medium-high temperature. Add the clams, which will quickly start to open, the champagne and lemon juice and let the liquid reduce by half. Before serving – and this dish is completed in only a few minutes – add butter and parsley and season with a little salt and pepper. Be careful with the salt as the clams are salted naturally. Coquinas are quite different from most white clams: they have an attractive dark blue shell inside that only appears when they open. They are a wonderfully tasty delicacy, but this recipe can also be used for other kinds of clams (or mussels). If you’re brave, make a hot and spicy variation by adding one sliced fresh red chili together with the garlic, and try it with freshly chopped coriander instead of parsley. Have fun and enjoy life...

M O R E T H A N O N E G L ASS O F W I N E A DAY BY AJ LINN

Today we are awash with advice about health and how to maintain a satisfactory balance between what we think is not really good for us and what definitely is not. We try to avoid the diet pundits – whether it’s the radio, TV, printed media or social networks – because the worst sort of headline, disgracefully overemployed, runs along the lines of, “What will happen to your liver if you drink more than a glass of wine a day?”, or, “Your left ventricular looks like this after a festive meal”. The best thing to do is ignore such matters, rather as we would ignore an invitation to see what our feet would look like if we didn’t cut our toenails for a year. How many times does the subject of diet and/or healthy food versus unhealthy food crop up in a conversation, usually at the exact moment when we are eating and drinking? “These fried peppers are delicious but, oh dear, how fattening”, or, “I adore Sauternes, but I am sure it puts on kilos”. Nevertheless, there was a time when it was unknown to make comments relating to the health effects of what we were eating or drinking and, even better, the mere idea that the wrong diet could in any way be prejudicial to our health and wellbeing had not occurred to anyone. Rather in the same way that smoking was not linked to lung cancer and respiratory ailments until centuries after it had become an accepted social habit, it appears that sitting down to a seven-course meal with different wines for each dish was in no way thought of as being anything but normal, and indeed a healthy way of living. Admittedly, the acts of eating and drinking in the 15th century were about as gross as it gets. When James I spent a day and a night at Houghton in 1617, the principal meal provided by his host’s kitchen consisted of what were described as “hot dishes”, notably boiled capon, chicken, ducks, breast of veal, haunch of venison, turkey, swan, goose, beef, pork, tripe, mince and venison. The following “cold course” saw mutton, rabbits, tongue, herons, curlew and veal served in pies. The “second course” started off with six quail (for the king), partridge, chicken, artichoke pie, curlew roast, pease buttered, rabbits, ducks, plovers, red deer pie, pigs’ ears, hot heron roast, lamb roast, gammons of bacon, pear tart, palates of grease, dried tongue, turkey pie, pheasant pie, dried hog’s cheek and cold turkey chicks. This selection would be served at breakfast, lunch and dinner with hardly any variation. The drink would be ale as nothing else was available. Any sign of illness or even gastric problems were treated with even more food, often accompanied by bloodletting and the application of leeches. Fast forward to the first half of the last century, and it is hard to imagine how anyone of the upper classes could possibly have lived better. A typical

example would be a private dinner at Michael Berens’ house in Hanover Terrace in 1961. It had the simplest menu imaginable. The three courses were fillets of sole, roast partridge, and cherries and cream. The wines were Pol Roger champagne 1948, Hochheimer Geiersberg 1953, Grands Echézeaux 1952 (magnum), Schloss Reinhartshausener Hattenheimer Wisselbrun Kabinett Gold Beeren Auslese 1949, Nuits St George 1919, marc de Chablis and marc de Mersault. A normal business meal for those engaged in the wine trade makes us wonder why on earth we look strangely at someone who orders a second glass of wine in today’s prudish world. Back then a routine luncheon may only have been three courses, but the wines would overwhelm anyone engaged in the same trade today. Ronald Avery’s lunch for five colleagues at the Hanstown Club started with a magnum of champagne, two French whites and four reds: a total of seven wines. Then they went back to their offices. No statistics are available, but it would be fascinating to know how long these gourmet gentlemen lived for, and what illnesses eventually took them to their final resting places. FINE DINING: MUMTAZ IN MARBELLA Most “Indian” restaurants are not Indian at all but rather Pakistani, although the average fan of the continent’s cuisine never appears too bothered about this detail. Misleadingly, what are in practice Pakistani establishments are called Indian by their owners. Mumtaz is a 100 per cent authentic Indian restaurant, and the selection of dishes on offer is probably among the best you will ever find. The classic bread oven produces Roti, Pharata and Nan in several forms, and the lady responsible for the hand-made delicacies has been at Mumtaz since it opened, as indeed has the manager, Juan. Salads, vegan, vegetarian, fish, meat, classic hors d’oeuvres and desserts – they are all here, together with a comprehensive wine list with reasonable prices. As a historic detail, Mumtaz is the longest-established restaurant in Puerto Banús. Benabola Casa, No.7 Puerto José Banús Tel. (+34) 952 812 090

RIMAC NEVERA P U S H I N G T H E B O U N DA R I E S O F E L E C T R I C H Y P E R CA RS

It was 10 years ago that Rimac Automobili embarked on an “impossible journey”, one that in 2021 reached its boldly ambitious target. Launched last year, the Nevera is the production version of the C_Two – an all-electric, 1914hp, 258mph (415 km/h), €2 million hypercar. This iteration of the Rimac C_Two concept car was initially revealed at the 2018 International Geneva Motor Show. and since then Rimac’s engineers have refined the new flagship model on every level during an extensive development program, “in the pursuit of the ultimate electric hypercar driving experience”. Most of the Nevera’s key components were developed in-house at Rimac’s headquarters in Croatia, and all systems have been improved and enhanced since the initial prototypes. “This is it,” explains Rimac Automobili founder and CEO Mate Rimac. “This is the car I had in mind when I embarked on the ‘impossible’ journey 10 years 160

ago. This car was born to outperform, and to raise the bar, redefining the norm for performance cars. And not only in performance – but as an allaround package. “When we first revealed the C_Two, we set our targets extremely high. There was nothing else that could even come close to matching the car’s cuttingedge electric powertrain and extreme performance. But for us that was only the starting point. “Everyone at Rimac is driven by curiosity and a desire to push things to the absolute limit. With its combination of everyday use and 1914hp performance, the Nevera proves what is possible when there are no restraints placed on technology, development or ambition… We have utilised the full potential of the electric powertrain.” Rimac Automobili plans to manufacture only 150 examples of the Nevera, which is being designed, engineered and built in Croatia, and homologated

for global use. Mate Rimac himself says he will personally test and sign off each of the Neveras before they are delivered to customers from the company’s current production site on the outskirts of Zagreb. “Fittingly,” notes Rimac Automobili, “the Nevera bears a proud Croatian name and one that truly reflects the prodigious performance the car can unleash in the blink of an eye. The name given by the locals to a quick, unexpected and mighty Mediterranean storm that races across the open sea off Croatia, a nevera is extremely powerful and charged by lightning. “Appearing with exceptional speed and potency, Rimac’s next-generation hypercar shares the Nevera’s name and looks set to leave a similarly disruptive effect on the global hypercar market. And, like the force of nature it is named after, it is just as adept at transforming its character in an instant – from assured and comfortable grand tourer to ultra-focused performance machine.”

Rimac has developed “the world’s first AI (Artificial Intelligence) Driver Coach” to enable drivers of all abilities to extract maximum performance from the Nevera and help them further develop their track driving skills. Adding a new immersive dimension to the driving experience, Nevera’s Driver Coach evaluates performance and provides guidance to optimise and enhance the driver’s on-track performance, by accessing 12 ultrasonic sensors, 13 cameras, six radars and the latest NVIDIA Pegasus operating system. The system overlays selected race circuits in real-time, offering clear and precise audio and visual guidance. As part of the customer journey, each Nevera owner will also be invited to Croatia to design his or her car “to their exacting requirements”.

T R A I N YO U R R E S P I R ATO RY M U S C L E S BY RACHEL GARROD

These past few weeks I have been seeing patients with post COVID-19 sequelae, which refers to longer term complications following the initial infection. Imagine, a long period of bed rest and inactivity, weeks or possibly months of breathing dependent on a ventilator, fibrotic damage to the lungs as a result of the infection, muscle problems and other organ damage... You can see that, for these patients, rehabilitation post discharge from hospital is essential. With inactivity, muscles waste and become weakened. This might be the heart muscle as well as respiratory muscles. Is there anything we can do? Well the good news is that muscles can be strengthened, and since I am a respiratory physiotherapist I focus on the muscles of breathing. The diaphragm, the intercostal muscles (muscles in between the ribs that help expand the chest) and accessory muscles of breathing can all be specifically trained. We do this using gadgets that are designed to target the inspiratory/ expiratory muscles – this is called respiratory muscle training (RMT). In one study by Abodonya and colleagues. 42 patients who had been weaned from mechanical ventilation were given either RMT or usual care. This was not a randomised trial so results should be interpreted with caution. However, the RMT group showed significant benefits on pulmonary function tests and a six-minute walk test, compared with their counterparts. In a randomised study presented at a recent conference, Professor McNarry shared data on 87 patients recovering from COVID-19 with persistent shortness of breath. An eight-week Zoom-monitored programme of RMT led to improvements in breathlessness and fatigue. The control arm, who did not receive the training, also showed improvements over time but the change in the trained group was two to 14 times greater than in the untrained patients. If you are having persistent problems post COVID-19 please get in touch and find help. 162

H E L P I N G LOV E D O N E S W H O A R E A D D I CT E D TO T E CH N O LO GY MEDICAL MINUTES BY JOHN SCHIESZER

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have increasingly turned to technology for entertainment and information. It is a trend that raises concerns about an increase in technology addiction. According to the Pew Research Center, a growing percentage of people are constantly online, and health officials are concerned about the amount of time children and adults spend with technology. China recently banned children from playing online games for more than three hours a week, internet addiction centres have been opening in the United States, and Facebook has come under fire for teenagers’ obsessive use of its Instagram app. “There is functional, healthy engagement with technology, ubiquitous and necessary in our everyday lives, and addictive use. It can be difficult to know when that line has been crossed,” says Petros Levounis, who is chair of the department of psychiatry and associate dean at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and author of “Technological Addictions in the USA”. “However, while obsessive use of technology may signal an addiction, it could otherwise be a sign of another mental health disorder.” While the majority of people who use technology will not have any problems, a percentage have developed an addiction and suffer consequences similar to that from substance abuse. In fact, studies have shown that, as internet addiction worsens, so does the probability of developing a substance use disorder. Using technology can become an obsession. People start engaging inactivities like online gaming, internet auctions, surfing the Net, social media and texting, and get caught up in the excitement. Soon, the focus shifts from generating feelings of pleasure and reward to being an activity they do to avoid feeling anxious, irritable or miserable. Levounis says studies are indicating emerging addictions. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, cybersex has increased, along with online dating apps, text chats and online pornography. He says internet gaming has exploded. One of the most concerning aspects with online gaming, explains Levounis, is that companies are now using psychology labs to maximise the effectiveness of their products in a way that is highly reminiscent of how the tobacco companies employed chemists to maximise their products’ addictiveness..

to cause stress in users, which is known as technostress from social media. However, when faced with such stress, instead of switching off or using them less, people are moving from one aspect of the social media platforms to another. In other words, they are escaping the causes of their stress without leaving the medium on which it originated. Research into the habits of 444 Facebook users revealed they would switch between activities such as chatting to friends, scanning news feeds and posting updates as each began to cause stress. This leads to an increased likelihood of technology addiction, as they use the various elements of the platform over a greater timespan. Researchers from Lancaster University, the University of Bamberg and Friedrich-Alexander Univeristät Erlangen-Nürnberg, writing in Information Systems Journal, found that users were seeking distraction and diversion within the Facebook platform as a coping mechanism for stress caused by the same platform, rather than switching off and undertaking a different activity. The researchers found that, because social network sites offer such a wide range of features, users can find they act both as stressors and as a distraction from that stress.

Studies Looking at Technology Addiction Social network users risk becoming more and more addicted to social media platforms even as they experience stress from their use, according to a 2019 study conducted at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. Social networking sites (SNS), such as Facebook and Instagram, are known

How Can I Help My Loved Ones? If you suspect someone you love is addicted to technology, do not try to get the person into a rehab to be cured. “We try not to do confrontation,” says Levounis. “It doesn’t work with alcohol and drugs and it doesn’t work with technological addiction either. You have to ask the person how things are going.” He says a good approach is to get the person to see the problem themselves. He suggests going slowly and asking your loved one when they went on holiday last. “Try to find something where they say, ‘I wish I had more time’, then you ask them, ‘Where do you think the time goes?’ You need to try to help them see themselves and make their own discovery.” Levounis says just asking about their day may help them realise themselves that they are spending so many hours surfing the net, on eBay or playing games. Defining technological addition is difficult to diagnose. Levounis recommends finding a therapist who specialises in addiction, who can evaluate the person for a variety of disorders. The person might have depression, anxiety or a more serious psychiatric disorder.

UDESHI

OFFERING STYLE SOLUTIONS FOR MARBELLA’S DISCERNING GENTLEMEN INTERVIEW WITH OSCAR UDESHI – TAILOR AND FOUNDER OF UDESHI TAILORING

Tailor and menswear designer Oscar Udeshi is a truly modern tailor, who recently brought his men’s fashion brand from Mayfair to Marbella, to offer men on the Costa del Sol soft, lightweight, comfortable and exquisitely crafted clothing to take them from the beach to the boardroom – and beyond. We spoke to him to find out more. How did you become a tailor? I left a career in banking to follow my passion for clothing and fill the gap for quality, yet comfortable, and soft tailored menswear. I was lucky enough to train under one of the last remaining bespoke shirt makers on Jermyn Street in London, before launching Udeshi in 1999. How do you offer solutions for the modern man’s wardrobe? I see myself as a problem solver, working with my customers to create garments which are perfectly suited to their lifestyle, tastes and style, and of course made to fit them like a glove. We take care of all our clients’ clothing requirements, from recreating their favourite jeans or chinos, to creating multiples of the same item, in different colours and fabrics for each season. We remove the need for the client to try on a new item each time and have it altered, or waste his time shopping. We also make suggestions on how an item can be worn and what combines well with it, taking into account the client’s lifestyle, personality and physique. The most expensive item in a wardrobe is the one that never gets worn – we eliminate that. All of this saves a tremendous amount of time and frustration. What are your most popular clothing items? We are best-known for our jeans, khakis and unstructured jackets, as they are hard to find in bespoke and made-to-measure. We find that once a client tries us, and sees the quality and consistency of fit, it isn’t long before they’ve ordered a complete look and a whole new wardrobe. How can you help people with multiple homes make sure they always have what they need? We often work with people who regularly travel between homes and don’t want to move clothes between them. We’re asked to create a capsule wardrobe for our clients’ various homes, so that they always have the same items in each home. They like to travel light and know that everything they have will fit and work perfectly together, and that’s where we come in. We’re also asked to create additional wardrobes for specific locations, be it a winter chalet or a beach hideaway, and make sure they have the right outfits for all the activities they enjoy in that location. Oscar Udeshi has a Marbella atelier and holds regular Trunk Shows in London. Visit www.udeshi.com to find out more and browse a selection of clothes, or contact Oscar to arrange a fitting and consultation by emailing info@udeshi. co.uk or calling (+34) 671 789 771.

Edition365 was launched at New Art City towards the end of 2021 to capture “the year that changed everything”. All of the work was created between 11 March 2020, when the World Health Organisation officially declared a global pandemic, and 10 March 2021. It comprises 365 artworks by a widely dispersed and dynamic array of creators from around the world, “uniting the voices of renowned photographers, emerging artists and everyday people alike”. This new immersive digital exhibition is a collaboration between New Art City (a virtual art space), ART3 (“the home of photography in the metaverse”) and British Journal of Photography (part of the digital organisation 854 Media). Announcing details of the exhibition, the organisers said, “Since the coronavirus pandemic swept the world in March 2020, all of humanity have shared – and documented – an extraordinary experience. History has unfurled in front of our eyes, cracks in our systems have been magnified, and across oceans and borders ways of thinking, acting and existing remain in flux. “Traversing tales of love, loss, hope, solidarity – humankind’s collective will to resist, persist and rebuild – the exhibition is among the most ambitious New Art City has ever attempted: a once-in-a-century photography collection, conceived to stand as a historical reference for decades to come.” The pieces that form Edition365, as well as the exhibition as a whole, were also made available to own in an exclusive NFT drop. 166

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2022

“As the hosts of some of the most viewed photographic exhibitions in the ‘real’ world,” said ART3 CEO Marc Hartog, “we wanted to build something of equal ambition in the metaverse. Edition365 is a time capsule of incredible works which tells the story of a unique moment in history, with artists from all over the world offering their own creative insight into this uniquely shared human experience.” Noting that creators had been hit incredibly hard during the pandemic, he added, “The NFT sale will create an opportunity for collectors to own unique works while supporting a large group of participating artists, who will receive the lion’s share of income generated. The concept of the metaverse is everevolving and, in what we believe will be a world first, one collector will be able to own the entire collection as part of the sale, with proceeds split between the artists.” www.newart.city / www.art3.io / www.1854.photography

NOMAD STUDIO ONE

M E E T I N G T H E CH A L L E N G E – F O R CHARITY Charities play a big part of Christmas, and this year the owner of Nomad Studio One took up a challenge by the staff and founder of One Eden Spain to cycle from Spain to the Gibraltar office dressed up as Elvis Presley – and to then spend the day dressed as the “King”. A chilling thought, he mused, but – given that several pledges for charity followed – Shawn agreed to the challenge and proceeded to buy a suitable Elvis costume for the event. The staff of One Eden were eagerly watching the Gibraltar frontier entry cameras for proof of Shawn crossing, and proceeded to ensure that several videos were made of him performing with a guitar around the offices and during client meetings. “After the initial embarrassment of getting on to the bike and cycling off,” says Shawn, “I was expecting the worst at the frontier queue and passport control. However, it was really strange to pass through without even a snigger or check, nor to be asked to remove the wig or sunglasses as proof of ID. It seems that the sight of someone dressed in a white diamond-encrusted jump suit on a bicycle with a guitar on their back was just like any other day. “It was a great experience and there were so many generous pledges. I am thrilled to have raised money for the combined charities of the GBC Gibraltar Open Day.” www.nomadstudioone.com / www.oneeden.com / www.gbc.gi/open-day

UNITED NATIONALITIES OF MARBELLA

S U M M I T TACK L E S T H E I SS U E S FAC E D BY M A R B E L L A’S YO U T H The Harbour Marbella hosted the United Nationalities of Marbella Summit in November, once again bringing together community-minded individuals and businesses to help others. The aim of the event was “to shine a spotlight on the problems that the younger generation of international residents are facing, including a lack of career opportunities and work experience, and the alarming increase in suicide attempts by 10-24 year olds”. Led by Nicole King and Georgina Shaw, the event united influential members of the community, business leaders, suicide prevention charities and representatives of Marbella Town Hall to brainstorm how to help the youth of Marbella. Nicole King urged people to take action to make Marbella a better place for the younger generation. She asked for support from businesses and individuals in creating safe hangout spaces for teens, offering more internships and career opportunities for youngsters, and expanding the suicide prevention hotline from La Barandilla to 24-7 and having Spanish and English speakers available. “Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s United Nationalities event,” said Nicole. “It was really dynamic and I was delighted to see so many people committed to taking action and making things better for the kids growing up in Marbella right now. Now is the moment to tackle these issues and provide solutions for Marbella’s international youth, and we look forward to taking practical steps to solving the issues that we discussed in the coming weeks. I would love to hear from anyone who can dedicate their time, or offer their services, experience or venue, to help our future generations.” More information available at www.u-n-m.org or by watching Marbella Now on RTV Marbella.

Spanish nationality can be acquired by different means, as stated in Spanish law. These cover birth, adoption, choice, naturalisation or exceptional circumstances, always in accordance with the government’s discretionary Royal Decree criteria. Nationality can also be acquired by legal residence in Spain under the terms established by law. Once the circumstances that originate the right to nationality have occurred and, before its acquisition, the interested party must appear at the relevant public administration to carry out a series of obligatory actions.

3. That the acquisition is registered in the Spanish Civil Registry. Failure to appear before the Civil Registrar, or a lack of statements to this effect, will result in the administrative file for acquisition of Spanish nationality being closed, leading the interested party – in the best of cases – back to the starting point. If you have initiated or want to initiate a procedure for acquiring Spanish nationality, at Welex a lawyer specialising in nationality applications will be able to assist you.

Common requirements for acquiring Spanish nationality by choice, naturalisation or residence: 1. That the individual is older than 14 years of age and capable of providing a declaration on his or her own behalf, and that they swear or promise loyalty to the monarch and obedience to Spain’s constitution and laws. 2.
