EDITOR’S NOTE 16
JULY & AUGUST 2022
Summer came early to the Costa del Sol this year in what is likely to have been a precursor of future trends as the warmer seasons become longer. That means the outdoor areas in our homes – already the focal point of our privileged al fresco lifestyles for much of the year – will require even more care and attention to ensure they are in optimum state for extended periods. For many people, this will effectively be a year-long commitment, one reason why our “Outdoor Living” section is a key feature in all six annual editions. In winter, we start contemplating our outdoor area plans, through spring and summer we bask in the fruits of our labours and creativity, and autumn is the ideal time to review how our outdoor set-up has coped – and, hopefully, triumphed – during the preceding months. For now, in the midst of summer, it is all about tweaking the finer details, perhaps making some last-minute additions to cater for evolving circumstances, and sitting back to enjoy the results of our endeavours – while welcoming and wowing our guests. This year’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan was well-timed (early June) to provide some summer inspiration, especially as the 2022 edition had a significant sustainable component, both in its own organisation and in overall exhibition concepts. The “Design for Nature” initiative, for example, showcased business ideas and technological solutions capable of protecting the environment and ensuring the most efficient use of resources – all crucial aspects of outdoor décor and living. Next up is the second annual Paris edition of Maison & Objet, where the theme is “Meta Sensible”. According to the organisers, this will highlight a new “El Dorado of creativity”, an era that “sparked a yearning for interiors that strike a subtle balance between being anchored in the real world, surrounded by artisan pieces, craftsmanship and tactile materials, and, at the other end of the spectrum, an appetite for digital living, free of all physical ties”. In short, “a physical world that is no longer in opposition with its digital counterpart”. Other forthcoming dates on the global decoration and design calendar are: 14-18 September – Intergift in Madrid, a major showpiece for the Spanish decoration and gift sector; and 17-25 September – the 20th edition of London Design Festival. Locally, the international spotlight will be on Design Week Marbella from 22 to 28 September, an event that brings together leading professionals in the architecture, interior design and art sectors. In the meantime, our “Outdoor Living” section this edition is full of inspiring ideas for furniture collections which use natural materials that are in blissful harmony with the environment. They set just the right balance of serenity and practicality that helps us remain as chilled-out as possible in outdoor spaces that superbly shelter us from the summer heat. While there in our summer pergola, or under a shade sail on the terrace, we will also no doubt be doing plenty of entertaining at this time of the year, and that means attention needs to be paid to table settings and the kitchen. Our Tableware section includes excellent ideas for elevating the style of your “spread”, while in Kitchens – one of the fastest growing sectors in the home décor industry – we look at how incorporating a bar area has become a hugely popular trend in 2022. Away from the dining setting, once the family and friends have been nourished and the last bottle of Ribera has been imbibed, another important refuge in our homes is the bathroom. Especially during the rigours of summer, it is crucial to have a paradisiacal (and, ideally, “spalike”) space where you can pamper and revitalise yourself and enhance general wellbeing in your home. Enjoy the transformation – and the many summer pleasures here in southern Spain. Home & Lifestyle Magazine
OUTDOOR LIVING ...
ENJOYING THE SUMMER OUTDOORS As we gravitate outside to enjoy the natural surroundings in warmer weather, our outdoor furniture is brought to the fore. Living in southern Europe gives us more reason than most to invest in outdoor furniture and accessories. After all, we tend to spend more time outside due to the congenial weather we are so blessed with. It goes without saying that outdoor furniture made with good-quality materials will standup against harsh weather conditions and therefore last longer, so choose materials that are UV and water-resistant, and you will be able to enjoy your furniture for several years to come. We are seeing many new outdoor furniture collections that use natural materials, which blend harmoniously with the environment and thus create a more calming and aesthetically pleasing feel for your outdoor space. Take a look at some of these inspirational ideas…

JULY & AUGUST 2022
How did Co’tantic come about? Co’tantic, meaning “heart” in the Mayan language, emerged as a project one spring in San Miguel de Allende, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, while observing – on a terrace – so many artists who are artists without knowing it. We were born with an international vocation, focused on a taste for design with soul that preserves its original aspects. Our aim is to connect craftspeople with current designs incorporating curated materials, and carefully listening to a client’s tastes and priorities. In our own furniture and textile designs, as well as in our interior design projects, we try to look for these principles, which become the mirror in which we reflect ourselves. Tell us more about your concept store and services… We opened our store just before the COVID-19 pandemic, with a basic line of furniture, lighting and textile products, all of them artisanally hand-made in Mexico. We feel lucky because, from the outset, we have learned so much listening to both the public and professionals who offer us the inspiration to propose our own designs and ideas for products and services. Therefore, our concept store combines permanent products with our own designs born from our diverse contacts, as well as offering interior design services to clients subject to their tastes and ideas – with latest trends supported by the best professionals in the industry. What inspires you and from where do you buy your products? We believe that all of us are made up of stories, and ours is connected to our Acapulco chair. It was there, on the paradisiacal beaches of Acapulco (Mexico) in the 1950s, where three friends decided to create the first Acapulco
chair on a non-profit basis to financially help a school for disabled children. That chair, initially used by fishermen in the area when they scaled their fish, gained international traction and fame when Hollywood stars spent their holidays in Acapulco, and especially the great Elizabeth Taylor, who helped make it a design icon. Our artisans continue to produce our “Acapulcos” – and, indeed, all our products – there in Mexico, where artisanal tradition, natural materials, sustainability and a social commitment inspire the Co’tantic vision. What is it you are most proud of with Co’tantic? We believe that Co´tantic reflects our own wellness concept. There is an indigenous community of women in San Blas (Nayarit), suffering economic hardship and lack of opportunities, who prepare raw materials for our products and artisans, the best palm in the world, and traditional families in Mexico City state who obtain round leather cord for our chairs, as well as our hand-made braided camel cotton in Guadalajara. In Conclusion… If you Google “Acapulco chair” on your browser, you will discover a replica Acapulco chair that is cheaper than ours, but always ask yourself what kind of social wellness its production entails. INSPIRATION FOR A
BRIGHTER HOME Lighting can be highly effective in elevating the look of a room but also instantly downgrade the aesthetics if you don’t get it right – no matter how beautiful the interior design. You need to take into special consideration why and where you want to install lighting into a space. Is it for reading or ambience, or to highlight your favourite painting or shrubbery? The lighting industry is not only exciting in decorative terms, but its technology is also moving so fast that you can now have ultimate control over the intensity, the timing and how you switch on your lights. This means the illumination in your home, and for your outside space, can be quite transformative when you get it right…

INSPIRATION FOR YOUR LOUNGE Your living room is not just a space for relaxing, watching television and reading a book – it is also a place where you entertain guests and showcase your personal design statement. Making this space an area where you want people to feel welcome and to create a wow-factor (while also being practical) can be quite a challenge when you have to consider the overall layout… but it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Ensuring there is plenty of space for people to walk comfortably around the room – with cosy seating and tables close by for resting glasses, plus a few pouffes in case unexpected guests arrive – is a good recipe for creating the perfect environment for entertaining guests. If you want to make a design statement, a bold armchair, art piece or rug – or even a large vase exploding with seasonal blooms – will make a huge difference to the aesthetics, and will offer a special and personal design expression to anyone who enters the room. The recent trend in living room sofas and chairs is highlighted by chunky and curvy seating in soft upholstered fabrics featuring textures in calming tones that welcome you into the space. Keep your living room uncluttered so it is easy on the eye and you and your guests can feel superlatively uplifted and relaxed in the area when you all come together in your home.

M O D E R N C L ASS I C W I T H A TO U C H O F F U N INTERVIEW WITH THERESE LINDBERG, CO-FOUNDER OF DIANA DOMINIQUE INTERIORS
Tell us about Diana Dominique… Diana Dominique is the upgraded and refined result of merging three longterm companies in the interior sector. We decided to come together and combine our skills and assets into an exciting new brand. With Diana Dominique we have created a platform that brings together all aspects of interior and exterior design, including reformations, architecture, sourcing and international logistics, under the one roof. Most importantly, we wanted to do this while still staying open to both professional and end-clients through our Atelier and stores. After a period of construction, the first 500 square metres of our new showroom is now open for business and a further 200 square metres is currently under construction. What is special about your showroom? First of all, we are of course happy about the distinct style that is Diana Dominique. I would describe it as an elegant modern classic, with a fun twist. The look is achieved with a large selection of brands from all over the world (some exclusive to us), in-house designs and an excellent combination of minds. The shop features a great range of furniture and décor, fabrics, wallpapers and rugs. Our assistants go out of their way to help clients source that one perfect chair. At the bar we invite designers and clients to have a coffee or a drink and browse our stock at leisure. There is a co-working station for freelance designers looking to benefit from our portfolio of suppliers and craftsmen. We believe that the willingness to share and cooperate with the market is really important for maintaining the dynamics and fun of the whole process. Down the road we have another two warehouses full of ready-to-collect stock, making us a particularly interesting place for those in a hurry. We always carry a good selection of Swedish beds as well as international accessories, rugs and furniture ready for same-day delivery.

What is your key philosophy when it comes to decorating? We have the benefit of working in a town with many talented decorating companies. I think all of us would answer more or less the same. We want to meet and exceed the expectations of our clients with quality, service and accuracy – and of course a great design! Furthermore we go a long way towards properly getting to know our clients and their tastes, enabling us to adapt our look to their vision. Ultimately, decorating should be a joyful experience, whether it is commercial or private. Bringing together the project by understanding the client, the location, the ambition and the budget is the key. It is also what we love to do. Where do you see the future for Diana Dominique? We are grateful to be growing and are constantly on the lookout for new talent to join our team. The goal this year is for another store to open in the area, and we are currently negotiating a couple of international locations. A parallel team is working on a really interesting webshop to take our products further afield. The sky’s the limit. Meanwhile, I would love to welcome everybody to visit us and have some fun. If you want to design a special cushion, find a perfect table or design the house of your dreams, we are there to help. Diana Dominique Atelier is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 7pm, but we are happy to see you outside of hours by appointment.

WALLS TO INSPIRE YOU There is no denying that wallpapers add ambience and warmth to a room. Whether you go for a statement wall, a simple plain or a textural wallcovering, wallpaper can transform the feel of a living space. If a room feels cold, stark and uninviting, wallpaper – even when hung on just one wall – can instantly elevate the overall aesthetic. Textural wallcoverings have become hugely popular in recent years, and rightly so, as they are usually not only subtle in design but also provide a “touchy-feely” element. Statement wallpapers bring an artistic focus to a space, and there are some stunningly bold collections that are new on the market and will give any room the wow-factor. Take a look at some of these ideas to inspire you to take the leap into the exciting world of wallcoverings…

EXPERTS IN NATURAL STONE AND WHY ANY LUXURY HOME SHOULD INVEST IN IT… INTERVIEW WITH MERCADO DA PEDRA MANAGING PARTNER RAMI EL JAMIL
Tell us more about the concept of Mercado da Pedra and how you approach your work. Our general concept is to offer a wide range of stone with a superlative service while ensuring the utmost respect to the planet’s natural resources. We use technology and honest craftsmanship to offer beautiful stoneware for the home as we love working with this raw material, and we are experts in the field so we always stay true to the precious natural stone itself – working with its natural beauty to create exquisite and unique products to enhance the aesthetic of ambiences. As a result, interior designers, architects and homeowners alike realise their dreams with us through the beauty of stone in a magical and harmonious process. What services do you offer? With more than 17 years of experience and expertise under our belt, we are fully committed to offering superlative guidance and the product to clients who are interested in installing stone into their project. We know that every 118

home is unique and special to the homeowner, and each project deserves attention to detail and excellence of production. We are meticulous when it comes to the finishing of our stone and always try to enhance the natural stone’s beauty so that the installation elevates the decorative aesthetic and the homeowner will be able to enjoy it for many years to come. From the creative approach to the final application, we extend our commitment to the after-sales service, making sure the result truly achieves the dream. Not only have we made installations in residential homes, but we have also installed our stone in glamorous hotels, museums, offices and much more. No matter who our customer is, we will communicate with them throughout the whole process so that they feel assured that the installation is done perfectly and to the highest standards. What is so special about natural stone? Stone is a green building material, so it is environmentally-friendly. It is recyclable, durable and requires only low maintenance. While engineered mate-
Photos by Johnny Gates rials might need lower maintenance than marble, they could never have the same depth, versatility and uniqueness in colour and character as natural stone. No slab of stone is the same, which is why it is so special and also is timeless. What can you offer in terms of finishings and design ideas? Many. There are anti-slip finishes that can make the limestone suitable for outdoor use, honed finishes that are made safe for indoor use, and other unique tumbled, waterjet or sandblasted finishes that can add more texture and character to the stone. Our craftsmen are mind-blowing with their innovative creativity and can design anything you want out of stone – from decorative wall art, tabletop finishes and artistic tiles even to sculptures. Why choose Mercado da Pedra? In the case of Mercado da Pedra, we offer tradition, credibility and a great deal of experience. What makes us different is the diversity, quality, know-
how and specialised application. The combination of these four aspects provides a firm decision point for the client to go ahead, and that is why they have chosen us because we have a longstanding reputation in this field. My job, from the very first moment, is to advise on the purchase decision and the search for alternatives, and to analyse possible technical or budgetary constraints, helping each client – professional or private – in the execution of their vision and project so that the experience for all of us is harmoniously beneficial and rewarding. DINING IN ...
DINING AT HOME Your dining area not only has to be welcoming and stylish, but it should also be functional. Choose a dining table that adequately accommodates the usual number of diners who sit around it, while ensuring it does not drown out the room and allows people to walk easily around the back of the chairs. A good-quality table will last you for years, so choose a strong material as it takes quite a lot of wear-and-tear. Circular tables are great for social occasions, enabling everyone to see each other comfortably. They are also easier to squeeze in additional guests, are more appropriate for smaller spaces and, furthermore, have a smaller footprint. There is nothing worse than uncomfortable seating when dining. After all, you want to relax whilst you are eating and, if you have guests over, you want them to enjoy the overall dining experience. To that end, seating plays a key role in creating a relaxed atmosphere. Research says that families who come together at mealtimes around a dining table are generally closer so, with this in mind, it is worth investing in this area.

FABRIC FINESSE When deciding on the fabric for your curtains, it is first necessary to establish its purpose. Is it for privacy, for blocking out sunlight, or for adding softness and a finishing touch to the living space? It is important to take into consideration the texture, the way it gathers and how it falls. A plain weave cotton fabric is often chosen for the way it drapes beautifully and its soft-to-the-touch feel. Sheer curtains are usually 100 per cent cotton and add an elegant aesthetic, delicately filtering sunlight into the room, while voiles are a type of sheer which can be either cotton or lightweight polyester. However, if you need to block-out light and cold air, black-out curtains are heavier and are experts at the job. If you want to aim for glamour, then satin, silk, brocade or velvet is an obvious option as they are higher quality fabrics that hang well with a lustrous sheen. Less expensive fabrics using polyester or nylon can offer the same properties of higher quality materials as they are strong and hang well, but if not treated they can be highly flammable – which could be a serious issue, especially in a kitchen, for example. Here are some ideas for your curtains this summer…

Right The beautiful L’autan collection from Misia Paris is woven using the jacquard technique “L’autan”, which is an Italian-made open-work refined voile. The warp and weft are both dyed for the “Alabaster” colourway and the “Natural” colour has weft yarns that retain their original shade to create a delicate two-tone crisscross effect. This very delicate voile receives a finishing treatment to soften the linen fibre and give it this soft touch. Misia is available from GC Studio in CC Camoján Corner in Marbella (www.gc-studio.es) and Alison Bethell-Collins Interior Design in Avda. del Mediterráneo, San Pedro de Alcántara (www.alisonbethellcollins.com). Below Zinc’s Meon, shown here in their ochre colour palette, is a washable wide-width pure linen with a shaded ombre that gently graduates in colour as it moves down the cloth. This watercolour wash-effect fabric can be used as a sheer when unlined to diffuse the light or as a lined curtain to create drama. Zinc is available from Heidi Gubbins in Urb. Marbella Real on the Golden Mile (www.heidigubbins.com) and Alison Bethell-Collins Interior Design (www.alisonbethellcollins.com) and Arte del Lusso (www.artedellusso.es), both in San Pedro de Alcántara.

A KITCHEN SENSATION The design of your kitchen needs to be strategic when it comes to space, ensuring it is as ergonomic as possible. Good storage systems are invaluable, so maximise on space by considering the areas both overhead and underneath the worktop. Having an organised kitchen is not only more aesthetically pleasing: it is more hygienic and offers better functionality. Think about how you move around the kitchen and place your storage in convenient locations for ease of access while cooking – and make sure the doors swing open easily without obstruction. If you have the space for a kitchen island, they can serve not only as a preparation worktop and cooking area but also as a bar or casual dining place. If you have a high-gloss kitchen, introducing natural materials such as wood or stone can bring warmth and ambience into the space, making it look more inviting. Adding interesting details such as glass cabinetry, wine storage units and display shelving breaks up the monotony of the layout and creates an overall look that is visually more attractive. All in all, making sure that your kitchen caters for your own personal requirements will make cooking a more pleasurable experience. Speaking to an expert about design layout, materials, furniture and appliances will pay-off, so have fun designing your kitchen. After all, it is widely considered to be the beating heart of the home.

Director of Grupo Monasterio
What is your company’s background in the industry? Grupo Monasterio is a Spanish company with more than 25 years of experience in the design and manufacture of kitchen furniture. Our identity is defined by three key factors, quality, service and design, with the added value of German-made kitchen style and expertise. We have our own team of architects, designers and interior designers. Grupo Monasterio is relatively new to the Coast but has been operating in other areas of Spain for many years. What made you decide to come to Marbella? Marbella is a charming city, which we were already familiar with as manufacturers of kitchen furniture, and where our products and services fit in very well. From this magnificent focal point of the Costa del Sol, Grupo Monasterio can develop projects for the homes of clients anywhere in Europe. What areas of design do you specialise in? We only specialise in the area we know best and which we are passionate about: the integral design of kitchen furniture. It is wonderful to enter an uninhabited space – where nothing exists, perhaps some walls – and project an idea with its own character, and featuring an exceptional, functional and ergonomic design. The interior design industry is booming at the moment. What services do Grupo Monasterio offer that make you stand-out from the rest? Throughout my career as a designer specialising in integral kitchen furniture, I have acquired knowledge that can only be achieved through training com

plemented by experience. That is why at Grupo Monasterio we are committed to high quality, of the brands we represent and the designs we create – and the impeccable installation of our furniture products. In short, we always aim to provide the best service to our customers. You work with a major German kitchen brand. Tell us more about this and why you chose to work with them. As I previously noted, our overriding objective is to offer quality products to our customers, which is why we place our complete trust in Nobilia, the largest European manufacturer of German kitchens. What are some of the more interesting projects that stand out for you, and why? All projects, or almost all, are especially interesting for us. However, above all else we are flattered that clients choose us for our service and professionalism. Also, as part of our “Be Smart” concept – highlighted by innovative designs, with resistant and sustainable materials – we are committed to digitisation and introducing cutting-edge technological elements in our designs. IDEAS FOR A BEAUTIFUL BEDROOM Making your bedroom your own personal haven might only require a few changes to convert it into a stylish retreat where you can relax in comfort. We all know that investing in a good-quality bed will pay-off in the long-run, as it will provide you with a better night’s sleep and will last for many years. Good-quality bed linen will also allow your skin to breathe, keeping you at a comfortable temperature and thus helping you to sleep better. Furthermore, beautiful bed linen will stand the test of time and will make your bedroom feel more luxurious. If you want to make a bold statement, consider a large headboard, lots of cushions and a wow-factor rug. Your bedroom doesn’t have to be like a hotel room, neutral and minimal. Instead add some personal touches such as a cherished piece of artwork, a vintage mirror or a statement armchair. A good choice of colours is very important to aid relaxation, which is why muted tones are particularly popular in this area of your home as they are considered calming. If your room can become a little chaotic at times due to a lack of storage systems, investing in good cabinetry will not only keep the space organised but will also mean that you start and end your day in a more relaxed frame of mind. Make your bedroom a place where you feel truly comfortable. Your sleep is precious and affects your health, mood and productivity during the day, so making a few design changes in this important area of your home can be quite instrumental in how you take on the world the next morning.

P R OV I D I N G E XCE PT I O N A L FA B R I C O PT I O NS F O R E L E GA N T H O M E S INTERVIEW WITH LOANI HOME CEO LOLA AGUADO
Tell us about how Loani Home started out… María Rosa Arrabé, my grandmother, founded the first home textile store in Marbella in 1981, with a French firm named Descamps. Her taste for high-quality and well-designed fabrics meant she enjoyed years of success, dressing the best houses in Marbella and the surrounding area. A few years later, she decided to include the Habidecor brand, a small high-quality bathroom rug firm that was just starting out. It was already clear then that Celso, its founder, was doing things really well, highlighted by his love of textiles and his considerable industry knowledge. Some years later, he created Abyss and, of course, my grandmother did not hesitate in incorporating what has become the best towel firm in the world into her small store. In 1998 the Descamps brand suffered some ups and downs. My grandmother and my mother, Lola Alario, decided to change to another French brand, Yves Delorme, a new firm that had been launched with significant impetus. The company continued to grow, and after five years they realised that they needed to be able to offer more options to clients, so in 2003 my mother and I created what is now Loani Home. Loani Home began as a multi-brand textile store with firms such as Abyss & Habidecor, Yves Delorme, Bellora, Trussardi, Missoni, Armani, Frette After years working with interior designers, helping them dress beds for their projects, we saw the need to create a brand that would give them total freedom when designing and choosing colours, fabrics and measurements. This is how Loani Custom was born in 2018. Now we have incorporated into our family of firms the exclusive bedding brand Celso de Lemos, something completely different to other brands.

You have carefully selected the brands that you work with. Tell us what these main brands are and why you chose them. After many years working with the best brands around the world, we made the decision to focus on the most exclusive brands – those with which we shared values. So we stayed with Abyss&Habidecor and Celso de Lemos, who work with the best quality cotton, always taking meticulous care of each detail, and who are also able to work on special orders. Plus, of course, with our own brand, Loani Custom. Tell us more about Loani Custom… With Loani Custom we help clients design and create exceptional bed linen that is ideal for their homes. We work with fabrics of varying qualities sourced from Europe, with the best raw materials from around the world. In our factory in Andalucía, we transform these fabrics into unique items with the highest quality finishes, all by hand. Each item is made to order, designed for each bed individually. What do you particularly enjoy about your work? It is beautiful to work with high-quality fabrics, designing and creating unique items. I’ve been at this for 20 years, travelling the world and learning, and I never have enough knowledge. It’s nice to think that I help people sleep better, which we do for one-third of our lives! YOUR BATHROOM RETREAT The biggest trend in bathrooms in recent years has been recreating a spa-like feel. When the world seems to have gone mad, retreating to the bathroom to relax, recharge and pamper yourself is the order of the day. The use of organic materials such as stone, oak-wood, raffia and lots of botanicals immediately evokes a sense of harmony and calm. Rain showers have become especially popular, and standalone ergonomic bathtubs, wet rooms and state-of-the-art toilets that light-up and clean themselves (and even you!) are also increasingly seen in latest bathroom ranges hitting the market. Treat yourself by turning your bathroom into a little paradise instead of just a room of function, and you will add value to your home and to your general wellbeing.

ELEVATING YOUR FLOORS Floors are often ignored when designing a room, but what is actually under your feet can, ironically, be what elevates the space. Whether it is a rug or the various versions of flooring tiles – such as ceramic, stone, wood or laminate – there are many options to transform a room. When living in southern Europe, rugs are customarily not considered as important as when living in colder countries, but that is an oversight. Rugs offer a homely ambience, finishing off the look of a room and reducing the echoes and aesthetic coldness of hard stone floors, and they also bring a focal point to a room. They can serve as an artistic statement or simply to soften up the overall feel of the space. In short, they are clever little additions that multi-task and provide a much-needed finishing touch to your interior design. But don’t stop there… outdoor rugs are now increasingly becoming “a thing”. Rugs have played a key role in the recent trend of melding the indoors with outside spaces, and now many carpet companies are providing beautiful weather-resistant rugs that create a cosier outdoor lounging area.

THE INTELLIGENT GARDEN By Beatrice Perlac
An intelligent garden is one that provides you with the greatest amount of pleasure combined with the lowest maintenance expense. It is a garden that works with nature rather than against, and it is fair to say that an Intelligent garden is an ecological garden. If a garden is designed with the appropriate ecological commitment and concept it will give you major savings in the long run. We are at a historic crossroads where we share major concerns about how the future will be and how we can navigate through these complicated times, with energy, product and labour costs all increasing by the day. We want to be ecological and nature-friendly but most of us need to be shown how. At Adarve Gardens, we are specialists in designing gardens for high-end

properties. Working with an ecological premise does not mean you have to return to the Stone Age and give up all those amazing gadgets and fun features in your outdoor space. It is more about having a garden that looks amazing and is set up with the least energy requirements and human effort – which in most cases converts into economical savings. To obtain pleasure out of perfection means good design and a solid foundation for your garden. Tips to Achieve an Intelligent Garden First of all, contract a reputed and experienced garden design company (such as Adarve) and outline your desires and requirements.
These are the key aspects you need to take into consideration when creating an intelligent garden: · Use a combination of plants that work together and have similar needs, and which thrive in the weather conditions or position they are placed. · Include mulch or coverage over the soil, and drop system irrigation to help your soil maintain its humidity (less irrigation) and assist small organisms to create their own ecosystems. · Don’t use chemical fertilisers, and instead aim to improve the soil composition with worm humus or organic material and sand. · Incorpórate solar powered lighting – there are stunning bollards in the market that create an incredible ambience.
· Try to reduce your grass surface by using gravel or creating a beach of sand. · I would also suggest installing auto-mowers to cut the grass, as their system is not only silent but can also be solar powered (consumption is extremely low) and reduces labour needs. THE VIVIENNE WESTWOOD EYEWEAR COLLECTION EXCLUSIVELY DESIGNED FOR SPECSAVERS ÓPTICAS
204
JULY & AUGUST 2022
The Vivienne Westwood eyewear collection takes inspiration from key design notes from the British fashion house – centred around the Westwood orb logo. It is available exclusively at Specsavers Ópticas in Spain. Signature prints and graphics adorn optical and sun designs within the collection; bold red and electric blue Westwood tartan is emblazoned across wide statement acetate sun frames and features subtly across metal frame optical styles. The classic Vivienne Westwood graffiti, in a monochrome graphic print, delivers a hand-painted DIY feel to the bold black optical frames, and Rococo-inspired metal frames complete the collection. In line with the Vivienne Westwood ethos, the collection has been developed with consideration to its design, durability and sustainability. Each frame is partially made from Eastman Acetate Renew, which is a combination of recycled single-use plastic and bio-based materials that come from sustainably sourced wood pulp. For every one million frames made with Acetate Renew, Eastman uses 50 tonnes of waste plastic as a raw material. This is plastic that is not currently recycled, which means it is being diverted from landfill and the ocean. The collection packaging has also been designed with consideration to the environment: featuring a pale grey shell case, which envelopes the eyewear in recycled felt, and accompanied by a tartan polish cloth in recycled nylon.
Sam Craig, director of frame development at Specsavers, said, “We are delighted to announce the global launch of our latest designer eyewear brand, the iconic fashion house Vivienne Westwood. Every millimetre of each frame exudes the Westwood style perfectly. Striking silhouettes, signature tartan prints, bold graffiti logos and golden orbs make up just some of the features we hope our customers will enjoy wearing.” Commenting on the collection, launched this spring, Christopher Di Pietro, global brand director for Vivienne Westwood, said, “The collection is classic and timeless. It can be worn by everyone, but it has a distinct look which was achieved by playing with the famous iconography of the house. The development of more sustainable materials for this range was as important as the designs themselves. There is still a lot more work to do in reducing the impact of our collection on the environment and we look forward to working with Specsavers in the future to achieve this.” The Vivienne Westwood-Specsavers campaign features international models Freddie Finch and Maria Keidj, styled in the Vivienne Westwood spring-summer 2022 collection, and statement designs from the optical range. The Vivienne Westwood Eyewear collection is available at Specsavers Ópticas stores in Marbella and Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol. LEONE BRASSERIE EXQUISITE FUSION OF CULINARY DELICACIES IN PUERTO BANÚS
It might seem somewhat off-topic to begin a restaurant review by highlighting its setting. But this is Marbella, specifically Puerto Banús, and a frontline marina vista of sumptuous yachts bobbing on glistening Mediterranean waters is de rigueur for the ultimate culinary experience in this glamour-savvy part of the Coast. So, let’s start by noting that Leone Brasserie impeccably ticks off the “location, location, location” box. In short, they essentially had us won over even before we introduced ourselves at the front door to the maître d’. Then there’s the menu. One of our intrepid Home & Lifestyle Magazine reviewers is passionately partial to freshly shucked oysters, so any restaurant offering that delicacy becomes an immediate gastronomic BFF. Obviously, that is, if it’s exquisitely prepared – and at Leone it certainly was. But more about the menu later. First the décor… The new owners took over Leone in early spring 2022 and one of their priorities was clearly to create an ambience that is light, airy, cool and modern, without (thankfully) falling into the trap of becoming too starkly minimalist. The setting is comfortably open plan but eminently cosy, with diners sitting at the entrance of the restaurant being afforded a picture-postcard, front-seat panorama of the marina. Once seated, warmly welcomed by “floor manager” Jordi (who speaks fluent English) and served an appetising complementary aperitif of guacamole, we studied the menu. Recently updated, it is now (we were told) more focused on grill dishes, with the previous sushi options excluded. Nevertheless, the menu is still accentuated by an enticing fusion of varied cuisines. In addition to the oysters (Fin de Claire No 3, with a shallot dressing), and after some extended contemplation (so many appealing options), we decided on the rock shrimp tempura and the crab and celery remoulade (with green apple and lemon mustard mayonnaise) for our starters. Next time(s) we are looking forward to the Vietnamese beef salad (with rice noodles), chicken and vegetable spring rolls (with Nuoc Mam sauce), salmon gravadlax (with horseradish cream and green apple carpaccio), beef tartare (served with crispy potatoes) and baked mussels (with Leone’s signature garlic butter). For mains, again, hard to make a decision, so another visit will be imperative, but we eventually opted for Italian beef tagliata (grilled entrecôte, rocket leaves, shaved parmesan and truffle sauce – the latter just the right touch to provide subtle taste and aroma without being overpowering) and Asian 206

salmon (low temperature cooked, with tamarind sauce and served with coconut rice). Before settling on salmon, we were also tempted by the sole meuniere, seabass “espalda” and tuna fillet, as well as happily salivating over the grill menu, which includes blue national lobster, Sanlucar prawns, Alaskan king crab, chicken satay and rack of New Zealand lamb. By dessert time, we were ready to declare ourselves suitably nourished (it was lunchtime and afternoon work is always complicated on an overfed stomach) but were swayed by the charming waitress’s revelation that “Paris-Brest” is their most popular sweet (choux pastry and praline buttercream). On another day we would have been equally drawn to the red berry pavlova and passionfruit tart. Sometimes even the better restaurants get everything right then fail at the final coffee hurdle. So, we were delighted that Leone maintained their meticulous attention to detail right to the end, with an excellent finishing coffee. There is a special children’s menu (burger, breaded chicken, fish fingers and spaghetti bolognaise), and on Sundays an “Afro Beat Bottomless Brunch”. On the day we were there (Wednesday), the chilled-out background music was perfectly balanced to set the right mood but was not at all intrusive for conversation. For those not having to work later (or drive), the wine list – mostly from Spain, France and Italy but also New Zealand and Argentina – covers a diverse array of preferences. In addition, there is an ample gin menu, which explores the classic tastes of Spain, England, Germany, France, Japan, Peru and Colombia. And finally, the name… It completely escaped us until we received an explanation later but apparently it derives from “Le” and “one”, or the “one and only”. Clever – and aptly-named. DINING AT THE TOP OF ITS GAME Restaurante Casino Marbella
There is more to Marbella’s exclusive casino than just poker and blackjack… it also has a hidden treasure, its innovative and elegant Restaurante Casino Marbella. Whether you fancy your chances on the casino table or would rather just enjoy an evening at a dining table, this venue offers something for everyone. Situated in the grounds of the impressive new Hard Rock Hotel in Nueva Andalucía, it is conveniently located next to Puerto Banús. As with all casinos you need to show your passport or identification to enter, and once inside you are instantly struck by the sophisticated and contemporary decoration and welcoming staff. The menu celebrates the delights of Mediterranean gastronomy, taking you on (they say) “a journey through the senses”. The master in the kitchen is a creative young Spaniard named Agustín Román, who has an impressive culinary background in several Michelin star restaurants, and has worked not only in Spain but also in the US and Germany. The menu this talented chef has created is wonderfully balanced, offering a variety of dishes to share such as homemade prawn gyozas, a luxurious Russian salad, truffled potato omelette, lamb brioche and citrus smoked salmon, among others. It is best advised to have three or four sharing dishes and then go for a main dish of baked sea bream or sea bass; or, for the carnivores, solomillo (sirloin) or entrêcot – all served with perfectly cooked vibrant vege-

tables. For those with a sweet tooth, delicious desserts are also on offer, such as panna cotta with ricotta, red berries and a balsamic glaze, a homemade coconut cake with Matcha tea ice cream, and an indulgent hazelnut chocolate brownie. There is a wide choice of drinks on offer from their impressive bar area, ranging from liquors, cocktails, beers, wines and champagne to non-alcoholic beverages. The table service is notably formidable. The staff all have a happy and upbeat attitude, willing to assist at any moment without being overbearing – and showing the utmost professionalism. When reading online reviews of the restaurant, many diners compliment the maître d’, and rightly so, as on our visit he was absolutely charming, putting us immediately at ease while listening to our requirements and offering his own personal suggestions. Even though this restaurant has no outdoor dining area, the room feels light and airy, with its cutting-edge décor contrasting with lush-green plants and freshly-cut flowers. The restaurant is on a slightly elevated landing that looks out over the casino itself, so you don’t have to travel far to have a flutter if the mood takes you. The Casino Marbella’s dining area is open daily from 8.30pm until 2.30am, and offers a group, tasting or à la carte menu. To reserve a table Tel. D R E A M T E A M I N C ATA LU Ñ A By Cassie M @Wineposter
Bell Cros is the name of the vineyard and the wine, and the beautiful valley in DO Montsant, Tarragona (Cataluña). It derives from “Bell”, which is Catalan for beautiful, and “Cros”, an old local Catalan word for valley. Bell Cros is a combined effort by a real dream team: Ann and Peter Skoglund, Swedish entrepreneurs who have assembled a group of local enthusiasts headed up by renowned winemaker Joan Asens. Their shared goal is to put DO Montsant more firmly on the map. Tarragona a lies just south-west of Barcelona, and if you head due west into the mountains you reach Comarca Priorat with its main town of Falset. The county (“comarca”) of Priorat comprises two intertwined wine districts – DOQ Priorat in the middle surrounded almost entirely by DO Montsant. Romans and Monks The earliest traces of wine production in the region were discovered at Marça, the village closest to Bell Cros. Shards of amphorae have been unearthed there in what was once a Roman settlement. But it was in the Middle Ages that hectares of vines were planted by monks who introduced new agricultural techniques that created an environment in which the vines flourished. Climatic Influences The climate of DO Montsant is influenced by its proximity to the Mediter210

ranean Sea, but there are continental features too. Hot, dry summers are followed by cool winters with rain and the risk of hail and frost. The vineyards are between 50 and 700 metres above sea level. It is a barren and harsh environment where the red-tinged soil contains elements of chalk, granite, silica and sand. Local Grapes The main focus for Bell Cros are Garnacha and Carinyena grapes. They are typical of DO Montsant and neighbouring DOC Priorat. These are three of their wines… L’Amic 2021 L’Amic – Friend. The best way to drink and enjoy this rosé wine is with friends, old and new, comfortably seated in tranquil surroundings or in a vibrant setting watching people pass by. Put the wine in an ice bucket, take your time, sip and enjoy. Wine Type: Rosé Grapes: Hand-picked; 100 per cent Garnacha Negra Winemaker: Joan Asens Average Age of Vines: 27 to 68 years Tasting Notes: Pink crystalline salmon colour. Aromatically fresh with citrus,
orange grapefruit and red fruit notes, such as cherry, and aniseed nuances. Serving Suggestions: Fish, seafood, white meat, salads (without vinegar), pasta and rice. Serve at a temperature of 8°C. El Mirador 2018 El Mirador is the vantage point that gives a stunning view of the whole of the Bell Cros vineyard. Wine Type: Red Grapes: Hand-picked 60 per cent Garnacha Negra and 40 per cent Carinyena Winemaker: Joan Asens Average Age of Vines: 46 to 70 years Tasting Notes: Ruby red in colour. Aromatically fresh and delicate with flavours of lilac flowers, plums and citrus. A long finish that seduces you to drink more. Serving Suggestions: Preferably paired with white or red meat together with pasta, rice and vegetables. Serve at a temperature of 16-17°C. L’Addició 2019 Historically, more than 95 per cent of grapes grown in Montsant are red, and this is also the case in the Bell Cros vineyard. In recent years, white wines
made from the Garnacha Blanca grape have been rediscovered and appreciated as fantastic wines. The name of the wine is L’Addició, an addition to the red wines. Wine Type: White Grapes: Hand-picked; 100 per cent Garnacha Blanca Winemaker: Joan Asens Average Age of Vines: 26 years Tasting Notes: Mid-colour wine with bright yellow-green tones. Aromatically dense and complex, dominated by citrus, aniseed and white flowers. On the palate it is opulent and fresh, with good acidity and volume. Serving Suggestions: Fish, seafood, white meat, salads (without vinegar), cheese, pasta and rice. Serve at a temperature between 10 and 14°C. Did you know that the nose is part of the respiratory system? The nose should be our predominant method of inhaling and exhaling air, and there are several good reasons for this. The nostrils, hair and nasal passageways are designed to assist in filtering allergens and foreign bodies from entering the lungs. When we breathe through our mouth, we are directly inhaling any particles or pollutants from the air, but with nasal breathing larger particles are trapped by tiny hairs in the passages and smaller ones by the mucus membranes. The nose also slows the velocity of the air we inhale, which maximises exposure to small arteries and lymphatics. Because nose breathing creates increased resistance to the air compared with mouth breathing, oxygen uptake is increased – by as much as 20 per cent. When we breathe through the nose we increase levels of carbon dioxide in the blood. This important gas facilitates the release of oxygen from red blood cells to tissues and organs where it is needed. Another essential gas, nitric oxide, is produced in the nose and in the paranasal sinuses. Nitric oxide is crucial to respiratory health as it helps keep our small airways open and is known for its protective effect on the heart. When we inhale through our nose, we transport this gas throughout the body. Nitric oxide is considered to prevent – and even reverse – heart disease. 214
JULY & AUGUST 2022
All in all, nasal breathing is an essential component for health. Unfortunately, 30 to 50 per cent of adults are mouth breathers, which causes several health problems such as snoring, sleep apnea, and speech and swallowing issues. The first step to improving your breathing is awareness. A conscious effort is required to change from mouth breathing to nose breathing but it is possible. In some cases, nasal irrigation can help clear a blocked nose, but if there are structural problems such as a deviated septum this might need surgery. For most people, however, simple breathing retraining exercises can do the job and can be easily taught by respiratory physiotherapists. Yoga breathing techniques, known as Pranayama, utilise a conscious focus on breathing and generally encourage nasal breathing. But there are some “Breathwork” sessions which advocate prolonged periods of mouth breathing, leading to a dangerous state of hyperventilation (over-breathing), which can cause painful muscle spasms or fitting. Beware of these! If you want help with your breathing, get in touch with Rachel Garrod (Ph.D. Physiotherapist): rachelgarrod1@gmail.com Tel. (+34) 699 501 190 www.betterbreathingphysio.com
A N AVO CA D O A DAY M AY K E E P H E A RT D I S E AS E AT B AY MEDICAL MINUTES BY JOHN SCHIESZER
Replacing cheese or mayonnaise with an avocado may be a great new way to improve your overall diet. A new study has found that eating two or more servings of avocado weekly is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, and substituting avocado for certain fat-containing foods like butter, cheese or processed meats is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease events. Avocados contain dietary fibre, unsaturated fats, especially monounsaturated fat (healthy fats), and other favourable components that have been associated with good cardiovascular health. Clinical trials have previously demonstrated that avocados have a positive impact on cardiovascular risk factors including high cholesterol. A medium avocado contains about 12 grams of fibre. The recommended amount is 28 to 34 grams of fibre per day. “Our study provides further evidence that the intake of plant-sourced unsaturated fats can improve diet quality and is an important component in cardiovascular disease prevention,” said lead study author Lorena S. Pacheco, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. “These are particularly notable findings since the consumption of avocados has risen steeply in the US in the last 20 years, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.” For 30 years, researchers followed more than 68,780 women (ages 30 to 55 years) from the Nurses’ Health Study and more than 41,700 men (ages 40 to 75 years) from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. All the participants were free of cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke at the start of the study. Researchers documented 9,185 coronary heart disease events and 5,290 strokes during more than 30 years of follow-up. They assessed participants’ diet using food frequency questionnaires given at the beginning of the study and then every four years. They calculated avocado intake from a questionnaire item that asked about the amount consumed and frequency. One serving equalled half an avocado or a half cup of avocado. After considering a wide range of cardiovascular risk factors and overall diet, study participants who ate at least two servings of avocado each week had a 16 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 21 per cent lower risk of coronary heart disease, compared to those who never or rarely ate avocados. Based on statistical modelling, replacing half a serving daily of margarine, butter, egg, yoghurt, cheese or processed meats such as bacon with the same amount of avocado was associated with a 16 per cent to 22 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease events. The study aligns with American Heart Association guidance to follow the Mediterranean diet, which focuses on fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, fish and other healthy foods and plant-based fats such as olive, canola, sesame and non-tropical oils. “These findings are significant because a healthy dietary pattern is the cornerstone for cardiovascular health,” said Cheryl Anderson, chair of the American Heart Association’s Council on Epidemiology and Prevention. “However, it can be difficult for many Americans to achieve and adhere to healthy eating patterns.”. This research complements and expands current literature on plant-sourced unsaturated fats and heart disease. These findings further substantiate evidence on the replacement of certain spreads and saturated fat-containing
foods such as cheese and processed meats, with a plant-sourced fat such as avocado, which, for the most part, is a well-accepted and popular food. Pacheco noted that avocados are readily available and can be included as part of a healthful diet as a spread or dressing, or even a dipping sauce. You can use the serving size of one-half cup of avocado (approximately 80 grams) and add it to salads, or as a spread on a sandwich in lieu of mayonnaise, or mix it with cilantro and lime juice as a dressing or dipping sauce with some raw veggies. Avocados can also be included in a smoothie instead of yoghurt.
Don’t Go Overboard with the Guacamole If you are following a medication regimen, Pacheco said you should first check-in with your physician and nutritionist before consuming large amounts of avocado. “In the case of avocados, these contain vitamin K, which is a blood clotting nutrient that may decrease the effect of blood-thinning medications like warfarin, so if you are on warfarin you need to consider this.” Avocados are also rich in potassium so someone on a low potassium diet needs to talk to their healthcare provider before including them in their diet. “Lastly, and slightly beyond the potential food-drug interaction, those individuals with a latex sensitivity or allergy should avoid avocados since some proteins in latex that cause latex allergy are also present in avocados, and in other fruits such as bananas, kiwis and strawberries to name a few,” said Pacheco. While avocados are a nutrient-rich food item with favourable food compounds including monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, they also are a calorie-rich food item. Pairing avocados with chips may compromise the benefits. “In most cases, when you have guacamole or similar spreads, it is easy to over-consume them, increasing your overall calories. Besides this, most of us do not pay attention to the serving size on the bag of chips and keep ‘munching away’, making this a troublesome combination,” said Pacheco. Located between Lugo and Ourense provinces, the Áurea Palacio de Sober boutique hotel is one of Galicia’s most venerable buildings. A traditional manor house whose origins date to 740, the sprawling hotel (4,000 square metres over three storeys) is set in stunning natural surroundings enveloped by lush forests and gardens. It is a place that seems to have been stuck in time. Its walls maintain the secrets and legends of 14 centuries, back to a golden age when Galician aristocrats created grand hallmarks of stone and arches – some of which have remained intact and preserved since the 7th century. Towards the end of the 20th century, the building reverted to the Sober family, whose association with the manor dates to the 15th century, and they con216

verted it into a four-star luxury hotel in the midst of nature and surrounded by the area’s historic vineyards. Today the Áurea Palacio de Sober comprises 43 spacious, luminous and tranquil rooms, as well as a glass-fronted spa offering breathtaking views of the Sil river and Ribeira Sacra countryside, an outdoor swimming pool, meeting rooms and a restaurant specialising in the local Galician cuisine. Danish celebrity Thomas Bickham has moved to Marbella, where he aims to change the way we think about decorating in the future. He is an executive hybrid artist in the intersection of visual storytelling, design, bespoke interior and jewellery. When you see his work, it becomes clear that Thomas Bickham is drawing outside the lines, and if you own one of his designs you can be sure that it will be a talking point in your home. He works with the finest materials the world has to offer, and it is not unusual to find his works mounted with diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and semi-precious stones. As a freelance designer, his collaborations with various companies take him around the world to countries such as Greenland, China, France, Dubai, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, the US and India – working with the most skilled craftsmen and creating exquisite interiors. He is currently working on what will probably become the most expensive bathtubs in the world, made from rubies. One will set you back approximately €8 million, but for that price you also get a cubic metre of snow from Greenland, to heat up in the tub. “I try to evoke an emotion, a sense of belonging and connection, in what I create,” Thomas told Home & Lifestyle Magazine this spring. “And even if 218

people can’t verbalise it, they can certainly sense it when they see my work. It’s like your soul is getting a hug.” He often constructs fountains and lavish flower arrangements, using sustainable preserved flowers to add colour, tranquillity and organic experiences. Sustainability is always on his mind, and in Thomas’ opinion the “use and throw away mentality” is now a thing of the past. He believes that we should buy less and buy well-crafted furniture that can last a lifetime or be re-used. When asked about his design philosophy he says, “I wish to expand the general perception of design. My designs are often inspired by nature so, whether it is a room I’m decorating or a body I’m creating jewellery for, I’m in a sense landscaping. I work intuitively with my clients. They are not just buying furniture or jewellery; they are investing in pieces of art that reflect their own sense of unique beauty. My work is an expression of their personal freedom, authenticity and limitlessness in a new form.” For more info: www.thomasbickham.com Instagram: thomasbickham

ANNUAL MARBELLA DUTCH BUSINESS CLUB
HERRING PARTY AT D I VOT GAST RO G R I L L
Members of the Marbella Dutch Business Club held the 18th edition of their Herring Party at a new location: Divot Gastro Grill in Nueva Andalucía. In addition to the finest Dutch herring, elegantly dressed guests enjoyed other delicacies such as wild salmon, eel, caviar, canapés and delicious oysters. As is the custom every year, the “Golden Herring” was awarded to “a Dutchman” (male or female) who had made great efforts in Spain to promote “the good name of the Netherlands”. Another custom is that one of the ladies is awarded a prize for wearing the “best hat”. Dutch singer Ger Vos and a DJ were responsible for getting everyone onto the dance floor, ensuring a great party that (unfortunately) came to an end at midnight. 222

M A N AG E M E N T O F TO U R IST R E N TA LS Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants
In recent years, there has been a considerable boom in tourist rentals in Spain. As an owner of a residential property in Andalucía, you can offer it as tourist accommodation for rent by marketing or promoting it through tourist channels, such as real estate agencies, mediation companies or digital booking management channels. However, there are several potential conflicts when renting out your property for tourist purposes in Spain. Can neighbours prohibit holiday rentals? If your property is part of a “community of owners” in Spain, your neighbours might not adopt a positive stance because their community is being frequented day in and day out by strangers, with the resulting neighbourhood unrest generated by constant comings and goings. If a majority of neighbours oppose this, a vote by three-fifths of the total number of owners (representing three-fifths of the participation quotas within the community) can lead to limitations or prohibitions on the holiday rental of your property in Spain. Can the community prohibit holiday rentals in Spain? This will also depend on the constitutive title or statutes of the community. It will be necessary to check whether these set any limitation or prohibition on the destination or use of the dwellings. Even if, when the community was constituted and the statutes were approved, no type of limitation on the destination and use of the dwellings was established, it is possible that an owners’ meeting might subsequently agree to a modification to the statutes, which must be registered in the Land Registry and will entail a limitation on the development of this type of activity in the community. 226
JULY & AUGUST 2022
However, this limitation cannot have retroactive effects: i.e. if you are already using your property for tourist or holiday purposes in Spain, you can continue to carry out this activity, without the community being able to limit it. How do you know when the tourist or holiday rental activity began in Spain in the event that the board approves any subsequent limitation? It will be from the moment you have registered your property with the Andalucian Tourism Register. Any resolution at the owners’ meeting adopted after this date will not apply to the owner who wants to rent out their property for tourist purposes. What if I want to invest in a property to rent it out for tourist use in Spain? If you want to buy a property for commercial purposes in Andalucía and the current owner already has it registered with the Andalucian Tourism Register, it should be noted that – even if the property is inscribed in this register – if the tourist rental activity was subsequently “prohibited” or “limited” by agreement at an owners’ meeting, the new purchaser would not have the right to continue with tourist rentals. They would be affected by any agreements adopted limiting such activity, such as, for example, an increase in community fees. If you want to acquire a property in Andalucía to rent it out, through holiday or tourist rentals, you must ensure that there are no impediments in the community statutes or board agreements that prohibit or limit this activity.
