As we enjoy our first summer in the post-pandemic era, a quote from the late Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto comes to mind. “Nothing that is old can be reborn,” he said in 1921. “But nor will it disappear entirely. And that which once was, always returns in some new form.”

Aalto, who died in 1976 at 78 years of age, is credited with being one of the pioneers of mid-century modernism in design while also being celebrated for his commitment towards humanising architecture.

The new Aalto2 Museum Centre, which opened earlier this year in his hometown of Jyväskylä, has scheduled a series of exhibitions, events and services aimed at fulfilling Alvar Aalto’s desire to create a forum that brings together a diverse array of art forms.

We were reminded of the above quote not (obviously) because of any desire for COVID to return in some new form – please no! – but because it highlights the importance of paying due homage to the past while regenerating the present to embolden an inspiring future.

At the spring edition of IMM Cologne in June, for example, we were informed that, “Marie Kondo and minimalism are out – at least according to Generation Z, who are enthusiastically showcasing a new interior design style on TikTok: ‘cluttercore’. Also known as organised chaos, this interior design trend is all about an unconventional and imperfect aesthetic that stimulates creativity and allows space for individuality.”

Remaining within the TikTok world, there is another new design trend gaining traction, “dopamine décor”, which focuses on bright colours, clashing patterns and “full-on maximalism”. Apparently the objective is to embellish our home styles with a sense of fun and excitement, irrespective of whether or not it creates a balanced aesthetic.

We’re not quite sure what Aalto, and modern-day traditionalists would think of this somewhat anarchic trend but, after the past three years, few would begrudge us all some joy and pleasure – especially during these vibrant summer Costa months beside the Mediterranean. Looking ahead, the second annual edition of Maison&Objet is also firmly on the same path. What, the organisers pondered, does the new season have in store for us? “Colour, extravagance, boldness and humour, for a re-energised interior. Maison&Objet invites you to rediscover exalted hedonism and sets off on a quest of pleasures, with its new inspiration theme that’s both festive and inclusive: ‘Enjoy’.”

Back at the IMM there was also some more earnest discussion about another trend that concerns us all on a higher global, and human, level: sustainability.

A key theme running throughout the entire design trade fair was the circular economy. Design classics on show demonstrated how important the quality of production, design and materials is in ensuring a long lifespan and reuse in the ethos of the circular economy. According to the organisers, “overall the industry showed a tremendous willingness to actively engage with this issue in order to develop sustainable solutions and promote circular business practices”. With top home décor professionals, design and architecture studios and construction companies on the Costa del Sol also firmly committed to sustainability, locally we can look forward to a visionary and uplifting future. But first a timely break – or at least a scaled-back schedule – is well–deserved for all. We hope you are able to enjoy a pleasant and relaxing summer – with a sparkle of colour and a re-energising dose of dopamine.

EDITOR’S NOTE

YOUR OUTDOOR OASIS AWAITS YOU

The lines between indoor and outdoor aesthetics are continuing to become increasingy blurred. Many homeowners are embracing the trend of bringing indoor comfort and style to their outdoor space by incorporating materials, colours and patterns that flow seamlessly from the interior of the home. You can experiment with elegant upholstery, decorative throw pillows and even outdoor rugs to create a cohesive look that reflects your personal style and creates a harmonious connection between your indoor and outdoor living spaces. While aesthetics is always important, outdoor furniture must also withstand the harsh elements of nature. Manufacturers are incorporating weather-resistant materials such as teak, wrought iron, aluminium and synthetic wicker to ensure long-lasting durability. Additionally, cushions and upholstery are crafted using specialised outdoor fabrics that resist fading, stains and mould. Plush cushions and ergonomic designs provide the ultimate relaxation experience, ensuring you can unwind in style and serenity. As environmental consciousness grows, the demand for sustainable outdoor furniture is on the rise. Manufacturers are responding by offering eco-friendly options made from recycled materials, reclaimed wood or responsibly sourced timber, reducing the environmental impact while adding unique character to your outdoor space – showcasing a commitment to both style and sustainability.

AIPER THE ULTIMATE INNOVATIVE POOL CLEANING ROBOT HAS TAKEN FLIGHT!

OUTDOOR LIVING ... 50 JULY & AUGUST 2023

Introducing the Seagull Pro, an exceptional cleaning technology that revolutionises pool maintenance. With its state-of-the-art quad-motor system and three versatile cleaning modes (floor, wall and auto), powered by Aiper’s innovative WavePath™ Navigation Technology, this device offers the epitome of advanced pool cleaning.

The Seagull Pro is the latest addition to Aiper’s esteemed Seagull Series, which also includes the Seagull Plus and Seagull SE. Designed for modern homes, these devices alleviate the burdensome task of pool cleaning, transforming the experience into one of pure ease.

The Seagull Pro sets a new standard in pool cleaning technology. Equipped with the world’s first quad-motor system, it achieves unparalleled underwater movement by utilising suction and quick water exhaust, resulting in superior speed and efficiency in removing unwanted particles from the pool floor.

The Seagull Pro has Aiper’s groundbreaking WavePath™ Navigation Technology, which optimises its cleaning coverage by following a systematic wave pattern and removing dirt in a methodical way – not randomly, like other devices in the market. Furthermore, its

remarkable wall climbing ability means that it automatically cleans the pool’s walls and waterline. It has an extended battery life of up to three hours and thoroughly cleans the water in pools up to 300 square metres, handling up to 130GPM of water flow. When the battery is low, it even parks itself at the side of the pool.

The other members of the Seagull range are ideal for smaller pools. They also have the convenience of the self-parking feature, LED indicators for monitoring battery life, and an easy-clean filter tray for dirt and grime.

The Seagull Plus and Seagull SE provide fast and effective cleaning. The Seagull Plus is slightly lower in price, rivals the Pro in terms of cleaning efficiency and is far more superlative than many other pool cleaning devices on the market. It charges in two and a half hours and operates for nearly two hours, making it ideal for pools up to 120 square metres. The Seagull SE suits pools up to 80 square metres, takes slightly less time to charge and runs for up to an hour and a half. It shares the dual drive motors and bottom scrubbers for effective and deep cleaning.

WHEN STYLE COMES TO LIGHT

Whether you go for minimalist lighting fixtures or a statement chandelier, the world of lighting is a fascinating one – with innovation and design evolving exponentially in this sector. Smart home technology, where voice commands and mobile app control have allowed homeowners to adjust lighting to suit their personal preferences and to enhance smart systems and energy-efficient LED illumination, are popular options in modern homes. The recent trend for clean lines and simple forms, as well as the use of natural materials such as wood and stone, is also more prevalent in recent collections, offering a greater organic feel. The industrial-inspired trend with exposed light bulbs and metal fixtures has started to fade, but statement chandeliers have made a significant comeback, serving as sculptural focal points and adding drama to a room. When considering lighting for a space, layering the illumination will add depth and visual interest. Including ambient, task and accent lighting in the same room, and placing light fixtures on different levels, will aesthetically enhance the room. Lighting is not only functional but also affects mood and general ambience, so giving your lighting design some careful consideration will really pay off in the long run.

A LIVING ROOM YOU TRULY WANT TO LIVE IN

The trend for minimalist living rooms with a focus on clean lines and clutter-free design has been a default position for decades. However, biophilic design which incorporates elements of nature into a space has added a much-needed boost to the aesthetic –creating a more harmonious and inviting feel. Incorporating natural materials such as wood, stone, botanicals, colour palettes, artwork and wallcoverings that refer to nature provides a superlative relaxing ambience. Eco-friendly, energy-efficient lighting and the use of recycled materials and furniture is an uptrend that forward-thinking companies are showcasing more and more, and with inspirational design aesthetics. Many of the latest collections are highlighting sofas in cream, grey or similar neutral colours and, even though these light colours might seem impractical for maintenance, fabrics have become more advanced and can often withstand general stains with a quick wipe-down. From a design standpoint, neutral sofas allow you to add a pop of artistic inspiration in other areas of the room such as with a statement rug, wall, art piece or armchair, to create a small but impactful design accent. Curved furniture such as soft-edged sofas and side tables and coffee tables with an organic flow are transformational in visual appeal and will provide timeless style, while adding texture with throws, cushions and rugs gives the ultimate “cosy factor” to finish off a room.

THE FABULOUS WORLD OF FABRICS

Fabrics play a pivotal role in interior design, serving as the foundation for both upholstery and curtains. Whether you are looking to update your living room sofa or revamp your window treatments, it is important to choose the right fabric for the job so you get the most out of your investment.

The importance of sustainability is greatly influencing the world of interior design, with eco-friendly options being increasingly popular choices. Fabrics made from organic fibres such as hemp, linen and organic cotton have crept into new collections, reducing the environmental impact while offering durability and breathability – and ensuring a comfortable and long-lasting upholstery and curtain choice.

Texture is an excellent way to add depth and aesthetic appeal to a living space, creating a cosy and warm overall look. Chunky weaves, bouclé and nubby fabrics offer a tactile experience that gives an extra touch of visual allure to furniture and window treatments.

In today’s fast-paced world, practicality is key. Performance fabrics have emerged as a go-to option for upholstery and curtains, offering a range of benefits such as stain resistance, durability and easy maintenance – particularly important in a home with children, pets or high-traffic areas, for example.

The resurgence of bold patterns and prints in the form of abstract geometrics and oversized floral motifs can inject personality and make an eye-catching statement in a room. New collections have successfully managed to pull off these looks in contemporary styles that avoid looking dated and create a real wow-factor, ideal for minimalist-style spaces.

For curtains, sheer and lightweight fabrics continue to be a popular choice as they allow natural light to filter through, creating an ethereal and airy ambiance in a room. Fabrics such as voile, chiffon and sheer linen offer privacy while still maintaining a sense of openness. Sheer curtains also lend themselves well to layering, allowing you to combine different fabrics and textures to achieve a personalised and versatile window treatment. Take a look at these ideas…

THE WONDERS OF WALLCOVERINGS

The importance of wallcoverings within an interior design has been strengthened in recent years thanks to wallpaper companies introducing exciting new textures, finishes and designs that completely change the look and feel of a space. Natural materials such as grass cloth, bamboo and cork offer a tactile and organic ambience which has become hugely popular, especially in Mediterranean-style homes. Botanical prints and designs referencing nature are still very much present in the new collections, bringing outside spaces into the home. Textured and embossed wallpapers add depth and dimension to walls and provide a tactile element. Subtle textures and muted colour palettes help to create a calm and serene atmosphere. Also, don’t be afraid to go for darker tones, as more sultry hues can create a warm visual impact and a cosy, intimate feel. However, for those who want to make more of a statement, metallic finishes add a touch of glamour and luxury, creating an elegant aesthetic. Geometric patterns, such as bold stripes, chevrons and abstract designs are a great way to draw the eye and create a focal point in a room. With an increasing emphasis on eco-friendly and sustainable design, there is a growing demand for wallcoverings made from recycled materials, natural fibres or low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints and dyes. These choices reflect a firm commitment to environmental consciousness.

BEDROOM DESIGN FOR THE ULTIMATE NIGHT’S SLEEP

The bedroom is a space where you must feel at your most relaxed, which means a great deal of thought about its design, aesthetically, will pay off in terms of your well-being – both mentally and physically. If the design truly reflects your personality, you will feel at your most comfortable, and you will be able to rest in a space that you can harmonise with more easily. Minimalism and order are often the main dishes of the day when it comes to bedroom design, just one reason why Scandinavian style has become so popular, as a neutral colour scheme, natural materials, good-quality bed linen and biophilic elements are ideal for creating a calming atmosphere. As we are now into the summer months, embracing the season with pastel shades and botanical accents is a wonderful way to create a summery oasis, bringing the outdoors into the home. If the room is small, adding a large mirror reflects natural light and helps create an illusion of space and an airier feel. Obviously, clever storage systems to hide away clutter and keep the space as organised and tidy as possible are imperative to aid in the creation of a visually relaxing room. Wardrobes and drawers have become so innovative in their designs in recent years that they can store more possessions than ever, with clever shelving and compartmental designs. With innovation in mind, technological advancements such as motorised blinds, dimmable lighting, smart home sound devices, zone system mattresses and beds that support the exact needs of your body, are just some of the many ways that technology can help create a more comfortable environment to promote relaxation. Sweet dreams!

BATHROOM TRANQUILLITY

Contemporary bathrooms are often minimalist these days, with clean lines featuring floating vanities, open shelving, freestanding bathtubs and walk-in showers – which all contribute to an overall feeling of openness, cleanliness and relaxation. The whole idea of creating your own spa at home has turned the bathroom into an area that used to be simply functional but is now a luxurious space where you can truly relax and pamper yourself.

Bringing nature indoors by using soft earthy colours and natural materials such as stone and wood creates a harmonious connection. However, this doesn’t mean that the modern bathroom is left in a basic state. Technology has crept into this area, as it has in most other parts of the home, and smart mirrors, touchless faucets, programmable showers and voice-controlled lighting systems are all ways to improve bathroom convenience and the overall experience.

If you want to enhance your bathroom with some small accents, updating your faucets, towel bars, and robe hooks, and accessorising with handy baskets or placing a large mirror or chandelier, can be highly effective. Take a look at these interesting ideas…

STUNNING NEW SHOWROOM HELPS PEOPLE CREATE THEIR DREAM HOME

UDesign’s new showroom is a combination of showroom, interactive interior design space and informal meeting place for clients and design professionals. Architects, designers and project managers are on hand to offer their knowledge and creativity as needed and requested. Their task goes way beyond simply showcasing products and materials.

According to UDesign, the raison d’être of this showroom is firmly based on good design and how best to make it work for the client. However, what appears to be wonderful in a showroom might not be so wonderful at home, and this is where specialist knowledge comes in.

“Buying a beautiful sofa is easy but buying one that really works in the space one has available is not so easy. It may be too big or too small. It may be upholstered in a material you love, but your dog may love it too. Perhaps a more user-friendly material, which can be taken off and washed occasionally, would suit you better, and UDesign will advise you on that.”

This is the age-old compromise between function and aesthetics, notes UDesign, and it is often difficult for a client to be conscious of all the practicalities all the time. “In the new showroom, every aspect of a purchase decision is thought about very carefully by all concerned, the task made some-

what easier by the overall layout of the products on show: a dozen or so very different zones designed to demonstrate distinctive ideas and styles. Each zone showcases how furniture placement, materials and colours can blend to create a specific mood or style.”

The UDesign team first analyse the space people have in their homes to create what they call a special plan, which is something akin to a personal shopper service. “Think of it as you would when being fitted for a Saville Row suit,” explains Jason Harris, UDesign creative director and CEO. “Fitted is the key word, because you are not buying it off the rack. What you think you want and what looks good on you are not necessarily the same thing. It’s similar with a house.”

Design can make the complicated look simple, and the new showroom is a space where UDesign can show people what is likely to work in real terms rather than on a computer screen. Not just to fill a space, but to suit that space. This is not just about material and style, it’s about size and scale and positioning – all fundamental to the creation of beautiful spaces. Lighting is an area that also requires professional skills to get right, because most of us do not spend hours of our time thinking about it and analysing

all the options available. UDesign do. They consider all aspects of illumination – direct lighting, ambient lighting, low lights, bright lights and technical advances that the client did not even know existed.

“What lighting you use and how you use it is subject to everything else in the room, quite apart from its architecture and overall design,” says Jason.

The client may not know what they want, and here the showroom itself comes into its own. All these zones show different designs, all beautiful and all different, ranging from conservative to eclectic to moody to minimalist. Each zone has been designed to create an entity that says something, to help people identify how they really feel about a room that they can relate to and identify with, according to their personal taste.

“We get a feel for what people really like from the showroom, and what they don’t like, and with that knowledge we can help them to create a style that’s unique to them and their lifestyle,” says Jason.

The showroom is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 6 pm. Currently, only the downstairs area is open, showcasing 13 different zones and 13 different interior design styles. Due to open soon, the upstairs area will be for finishes, materials, tiles, bathrooms and kitchens. In total the showroom space,

architecture studio and workshop cover 3,500 square metres. There are renowned pieces of iconic furniture everywhere, with the Edra “Boa” sofa being the centrepiece.

“We want to encourage people to visit the showroom to discover the treasures inside,” says Jason. “However, if people are not lucky enough to be in Marbella, we have just launched a very creative video that shows how impressive the space is.”

UNRAVELLING THE BEAUTY OF RUGS

Rugs are seen by many as an essential decorative element in interior design, adding warmth, texture and character to any space. Whether you are looking to create a cosy ambience or make a bold statement, these rug inspirations will help you elevate your space to new heights. Bringing the beauty of nature indoors is a prominent trend in home design. Think earthy tones, botanical motifs and organic patterns. Rugs featuring leafy prints, floral designs or even abstract representations of natural landscapes can infuse a space with a sense of tranquillity, harmony and connection to the outdoors. Geometric patterns continue to be a popular choice when it comes to rug design, offering a contemporary and structured aesthetic. From bold stripes and chevron designs to intricate hexagons and diamonds, geometric rugs can add visual interest and an avant-garde touch to any space. Opt for contrasting colours or a monochromatic scheme to create a striking focal point. For those seeking a bold and contemporary statement, abstract rug designs are a go-to. These rugs showcase artistic patterns, asymmetrical shapes and vivid colours, allowing you to introduce a unique and vibrant element to your space. Abstract rugs can be the focal point in a minimalist interior or provide a bold contrast in a more traditional setting.

Texture is a key element in rug design, creating depth and tactile appeal.

Chunky knit rugs, shaggy flokatis and braided jute rugs are some stand-out examples that introduce texture into a space. Layering rugs is another trend that allows you to play with different textures and patterns, adding dimension and visual interest to your floors. Vintage and antique rugs have made a strong comeback in recent years, adding a touch of history and character to modern interiors – blending the old and the new.

NEW BRAND COLLABORATIONS FOR VISIONARY NORDIC HOME STYLISTS

INTERVIEW WITH YOUR HOME STYLING OWNER MARTIN RANCE

FIRST PERSON ... YOUR
HOME STYLING
152 JULY & AUGUST 2023

Since starting Your Home Styling in 2019, how have you seen the company evolve?

My partner Laura and I started the company during the pandemic, when we offered turnkey solutions and interior design. We worked as personal shoppers for customers who weren’t able to do so themselves due to the lockdown, purchasing furniture, designing packages and carrying out installations. We then opened our showroom on the Mijas Road, where we have a wide range of our own furniture and also now retail a large selection of internationally-renowned brands such as Bolia, Fritz Hansen, Houe, Tine K Home, Skagerak, Umage, Cane-line and Eva Solo, to name but a few.

Why do you call yourselves “stylists”?

We do not consider ourselves as interior designers in the traditional sense, so we feel calling ourselves “stylists” is more appropriate. Our showroom houses many products that a homeowner can see and touch, but if they see something elsewhere we can incorporate it within the design to suit the client’s budget.

Why do you think Your Home Styling has become successful so quickly?

I believe it is because we offer a level of service that goes above and beyond the usual service you expect. Our clients really trust us to do the best

job possible, delivering on time and within their budgetary requirements. We have a friendly approach but also take our work very seriously – it says it all that many of our clients have become our friends! We take the time to really understand the tastes, requirements and aspirations of each client so that the end result is the best it can be. Even though we are known for our contemporary Nordic design style, we are happy to cater for almost any design preference, which opens us up to a wider audience.

Tell us more about some of the changes you have recently made to the showroom…

As we work with many more new brands than before, we have a lot more stock on offer for our customers. From lighting, tableware and furniture items to accessories, there is something for everyone. We have also expanded our outdoor furniture section, which has proven very popular with visitors.

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS AT LUXURY DEVELOPMENT IN LA QUINTA MOUNTAIN SCAPE

ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY ATLAS GROUP

Backed by BREEAM certification, an award-winning developer and trusted architects González & Jacobson, construction at Vista Lago Residences started earlier this year. Atlas Group has been selected to construct several of the villas.

Nestled amidst an enchanting landscape, Vista Lago Residences is highlighted by breathtaking vistas that blend seamlessly with the architecture. The residences are perched upon the hilltop, and offer sweeping panoramas of the coastline, the Mediterranean Sea and as far as northern Africa. In addition to the unrivalled surroundings, each property has been carefully positioned for privacy and to maintain the views.

Mike Gregory, Director General of Atlas Group, is proud to have been named as a construction partner for Vista Lago by the By-Bright team. “The development has received international recognition and is BREEAM certified, which showcases the dedication of the teams behind the project to surpass market standards. It also ensures that future residents can enjoy luxury living while embracing an environmentally conscious ethos.”

Vista Lago was the first urban development on the Costa del Sol to receive BREEAM certification, which is the longest-established method for assessing, rating and certifying building sustainability and the application of leading technologies and practices.

Adds Mike Gregory, “Atlas Group is recognised for technical excellence and tailor-made construction. Hence we are confident that this partnership with By-Bright, along with architects González & Jacobson, will result in an incredible development of luxury homes.”

The infrastructure work poses some challenges due to the mountainous terrain, which also adds a certain uniqueness to each individually designed property. The villas stand on large plots, which enhances privacy, and each has its own private swimming pool and landscaped garden. The foundation and structure of the villas uses reinforced concrete and all roofs have thermal insulation. The properties are infused with large format porcelain stoneware, inside and out, and include domotic controls, air conditioning throughout and charging points in the garages for electric cars.

How did you enter into the world of art?

I was passionate about it from a very young age. I was always curious and I loved drawing, as well as everything related to the arts, then I continued studying, training myself, and I have been working professionally for many years now.

What are your inspirations and how would you define your style?

Any moment, any journey, any everyday object inspires me. I am very observant and find inspiration easily, then I interpret it in my inner world and try to capture the idea on canvas in a personal language, according to my way of understanding painting. My career as a plastic artist has led me to evolve over the years.

In what way has your style evolved and changed over the years? My first stage was very academic and figurative, based on the Renaissance and Baroque, but later, for several years, I was closely linked to the contemporary landscape, until I gradually deconstructed and synthesised it to arrive at a very abstract and conceptual work. This is the language in which I am working at the moment.

How did the collaboration come about with Collection Rimon?

It goes back quite a few years. Josef, the owner of Collection Rimon, saw in me something special that he wanted to showcase within his company, and I saw in Josef a firm commitment to internationalization which, to this day, means that our synergy continues to flow. The collaboration has led me to exhibit in different continents.

Tell us about one of the most exciting moments in your career. Fortunately, I have had many amazing moments. For me each new recognition is just like the first one, and it is hugely motivating, as is the fact that different museums around Spain want to show my work. However, if I had to mention a specific moment, I would highlight my participation in a group exhibition at the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, where I had the opportunity to share a display room with major artists such as Picasso, Chillida, Sorolla and Dalí, among others.

In the case of Seda Club Hotel, the historical inspiration was Granada’s centuries of Muslim rule, specifically the silk trade that prevailed before control was surrendered to the Spanish Catholic Monarchs in 1492.

The hotel is located in the heart of Granada’s historical centre, in Plaza de la Trinidad, a garden square dating from 1893 that extends around an elegant baroque fountain made from stone and marble and is just a short walk from the cathedral.

A major refurbishment of Seda Club Hotel’s interiors has recently been completed by New York-based interdisciplinary architecture and design firm Rockwell Group. The starting brief for Rockwell’s Madrid studio was to create the “ultimate destination to gather, providing a cultural melting pot for global and European explorers”.

The hotel now has a luxurious social club feel, achieved through the use of materials such as rich woods, bronze metal, velvet and marble and resulting in an opulent yet familiar aesthetic.

The hotel has been set up to provide guests with a series of interconnected spaces that feel “exclusive, timeless, warm and irreverent”.

The central lobby and lounge areas facilitate a private members atmosphere, and the only way to enter the hotel is through a “secret members only” library that widens out into a wood-panelled lobby lounge. The lounge features columns throughout and walls clad in a textured emerald plaster and velvet drapery.

At the adjacent lobby bar, a light installation made of glass and bronze in the shape of archery bows decorates the top of the drinks display and curves up

onto the ceiling. The bar has a marble top and leather die with a polished bronze back bar and antique mirrors on the walls.

The La Pájara sky lounge references the region’s numerous bird species, creating a colourful and playful rooftop space with views of the nearby cathedral. A mosaic tile floor in a traditional local pattern provides the backdrop to lush greenery in a myriad of ceramic pots. A pergola includes an ornate bird and floral-patterned canopy, while a water fountain continues the bird-inspired theme in mosaic.

The hotel comprises just 21 boutique-style guest rooms, highlighted by opulent materials. The beds have a custom leather headboard with a framework composed of brushed brass rods – from which lamps, mirrors and accessories are suspended. This hard structural effect is balanced using patterns and luxurious soft furnishings and, similarly, the chevron wood floors are softened with rugs and velvet drapery. The closet walls are covered in a warm tweed-like fabric with red piping and further leather detailing to tie in with the bespoke headboards.

Tiling in the bathrooms pays homage to the glazed tile mosaics of Granada’s Alhambra Islamic palace and fortress, and guests also have the option of utilising the hotel spa, which takes its inspiration from Roman Baths, complete with sculptured stone and classical forms.

LA ALVAROTECA

BOLD URBAN CUISINE WITH A TRADITIONAL FLAIR

It is always a delight to be seduced by Marbella’s grand settings and luxurious dining establishments. Sometimes, however, there is just as much – if not more – pleasure and culinary delectation to be derived from exploring further afield and discovering culinary gems in the most unlikely locations. Almost hidden behind a nondescript façcade on the edge of Málaga’s city centre, not far from the central Maria Zambrano train station hub, is a restaurant that truly dazzles diners with the intrepid creative genius of Álvaro Ávila, its chef and co-owner (with wife Lara Izquierdo).

Not that La Alvaroteca has passed unnoticed. The restaurant already has a coveted Spanish Repsol “Sol”, as well as several other national awards, and surely a Michelin star is not far off – perhaps after a major refurbishment currently underway in the two main dining areas is completed.

Álvaro Ávila defines himself as restless, non-conformist and passionate about his work, while always remaining faithful to his roots in Málaga (where he was born) and Jaén (where he has close family connections).

He was attracted to cooking from an early age, tinkering with his grandmother’s pots and pans when he was eight years old. He studied at the Jacaranda hospitality academy and began his professional career at the Meliá Costa del Sol and Villa Padierna hotels. Later, he worked at the Real Café

Bernabéu and Jardín de la Leyenda restaurants in Madrid and completed an internship at Arzak, before returning to Málaga, where he was part of the kitchen teams at Adolfo and Mar de Alborán.

In 2013 he launched his own project, La Alvaroteca, which initially opened as a tavern serving pinchos (tapa-style portions) and traditional cuisine with a creative twist, and the establishment quickly became a flagship gastronomic establishment in the Cruz del Humilladero neighbourhood. Today, a significant proportion of his clientele are international, especially Scandinavian. Álvaro’s audacious philosophy towards cuisine is reflected in La Alvaroteca’s décor. Many first-time diners will be bemused by its electric style, which is highlighted by a liberal use of graffiti images – and knives. The knife, it turns out, is a personal emblem for his kitchen operations, and the vivid dining room aesthetics derive from his passion for comics and science fiction films. As for the cuisine, La Alvaroteca offers diners a traditional menu of starters, mains and desserts, or a more informal selection of tapas, as well as two less conventional, but attractively well-balanced, tasting menus.

Bearing in mind the restaurant’s burgeoning reputation in fine dining circles, the prices are “easy on the wallet”. Available from Tuesday to Friday, the tapas menu, for example, costs between €35 and €40.

À LA CARTE ...
162 JULY & AUGUST 2023

The “Carta Blanca” is a fun and casual concept devised by Álvaro to offer clients the possibility of trying many different dishes from the menu in the form of a succession of tapas. Diners place themselves completely in the hands of the chef until they have eaten enough and decide to call it quits. The kitchen team determine the dishes, and their serving order, depending on seasonal ingredients from the local markets.

The “Origen”, on the other, is a more classic – albeit just as avant-garde – tasting menu. It is what we enjoyed during our visit, with a few additional delicacies. Available every day the restaurant is open, the menu is priced at €67 per diner, and served for a maximum of six people per table.

It consists of 14 courses, based on Álvaro’s signature cuisine, and includes dishes prepared with ingeniously meticulous inventiveness – and sometimes a little spice of provocation to challenge the palate.

It is difficult to give them due creative credit with a simple description so suffice to say the key ingredients include: “gummy” olives; cod; red prawns, “ortiguillas” (sea anemones); acorn-fed ham; oyster, ponzu and kimchi; goat taco; black rice toast, smoked eel and ali oli; a sardine that “wanted to be a tomato”; turbot; quail; suckling pig confit; mango chutney and ginger ice cream; cheese trolley; and, for dessert, violet and amaretto ice cream, and petit fours.

The restaurant is committed to offering service that mixes an appropriate level of formality with warm cordiality, with the staff knowledgeably informing diners about the dishes and recommending options, both from the menu and the wine list – which includes more than 150 national and international wines.

Open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday: 1.30pm-4pm and 8.30pm-11pm

Lunch only Wednesday and Sunday: 1.30pm-4pm

SIP SIP HOORAY FOR CHARDONNAY

If you missed International Chardonnay Day on 23 May, don’t worry. There is definitely no other grape which is more versatile and represents the biggest range of wine styles all over the world. So, with this thought in mind, a new Chardonnay wine can be discovered on any of the other 364 days of the year.

The Chardonnay grape is considered a timeless classic in the realm of wines, and it has captured the hearts of enthusiasts and winemakers around the world.

This white grape variety is well known for its adaptability to different terroirs. Chardonnay grapes thrive in diverse climates and regions, showcasing remarkable variations in taste and style.

From the cool-climate vineyards of Chablis, where the wines embody minerality and crisp acidity, to the sun-drenched vineyards of California, where Chardonnay shines with rich fruit flavours, each region leaves its distinctive mark on this beloved grape.

One of the defining characteristics of Chardonnay is its ability to express the winemaker’s individual touch. As a relatively neutral grape it is easily influenced by winemaking techniques such as oak ageing, malolactic fermentation and lees stirring. These methods impart a multitude of flavours and textures, ranging from vibrant citrus and green apple to stone fruits such as peach and apricot, and tropical fruits and vanilla-spiced richness.

The use of oak barrels can give Chardonnay a creamy texture, vanilla and nuances of toast, while stainless steel fermentation highlights its crispness and purity.

In Burgundy, the birthplace of Chardonnay, the region’s admirable vineyards of Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet are celebrat-

ed for their complex, age-worthy wines. These Chardonnays captivate with their delicate balance of fruit, acidity and subtle minerality, showcasing the true essence of the varietal.

Because of its great range of styles, this is an easy grape to pair with food. For seafood lovers, Chardonnay’s citrusy and tropical fruit expression complements the delicate flavours of grilled shrimp, seared scallops or buttery lobster. Its acidity cuts through the richness of these dishes, providing a refreshing contrast.

Another excellent choice is grilled or roasted pork. The smoky and toasty notes in the Chardonnay create a lovely synergy with the grilled or charred aspects of the pork.

Vegetarian options such as roasted aubergine risotto or creamy mushroom pasta find a delightful partner in Chardonnay. Its fruit-forward flavours and balanced acidity complement the earthiness of the dishes, creating a harmonious pairing.

As we navigate the fascinating world of Chardonnay, it is essential to appreciate the diversity it offers. Next time you are thinking about whether you like Chardonnay or not, have you really tried them all?

WINE NOTES ...
164 JULY & AUGUST 2023

EXPERIENCING A MUCH BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE BY ADOPTING A SELF-CARE APPROACH

Adopting some self-care techniques may reap huge health benefits. Selfcare is defined as the process of establishing behaviours to ensure holistic well-being. It is about taking the time to really understand your true needs beyond just impulses. We all engage in some form of self-care daily with food choices, exercise, sleep, reading, etc. However, self-care also involves a person’s spiritual and social well-being.

The concept of self-care has ancient origins and Socrates is credited with founding the self-care movement in ancient Greece. Self-care became especially popular during the black feminist movement through civil rights activist and poet Audre Lorde, who was an American writer, radical feminist, professor, philosopher and civil rights activist. She advocated for self-care to preserve black feminist’s identities, to energise their activism and to preserve their minds during the civil rights movement.

Self-care includes anything you do to keep yourself healthy physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. “Self-care is how you take care of yourself that includes your sleep, diet, exercise routine, daily habits, relationships with others, boundaries, and your feelings,” said Hanna Garza, who is with the Texas Child Health Access through Telemedicine (TCHATT) program and a clinical director at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso (Texas). “When people find themselves in challenging situations, self-care usually gets neglected and that may lead to stress and burnout.”

Noting that self-care is different for everyone, Maital Neta, an associate professor of psychology and the associate director of Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior Director of Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Lab at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, said, “It’s anything that you do to take care of yourself so you can stay physically, mentally and emotionally well. It is important because it translates into better physical, mental and emotional

health and well-being. Extensive research has demonstrated that self-care promotes positive health outcomes, including living longer, having healthier and more satisfying relationships, and promoting resilience in the face of stress.”

You Can’t Buy Self-Care

For some people, retail therapy may be a perfectly valid method of self-care. For example, if you are a person who is normally very frugal, letting loose and treating yourself can feel good. “Also,” said Neta, “if you are someone who often struggles with insecurities, buying new clothing that makes you feel more confident and more ‘you’ can be enormously powerful. It will bring benefits long after the specific shopping trip ends. But that doesn’t work for everyone and not everyone has those means.”

Self-care may be simply a peaceful walk in the fresh air, maybe curling up with a good book, or creating a piece of artwork. It may be connecting with a friend. Neta said some self-care may require a few hours of your day and be less frequent, and some might only require a few minutes, such as a short walk around the block, and can be done more often.

Garza said sleep is very important to self-care and she recommends trying to get seven to eight hours of sleep a day, developing an exercise routine, and setting boundaries. “Learn to set limits with yourself and others and learn to say ‘no’. Recognise your own negative emotions and convert them into positive ones.”

THE POWERFUL BENEFITS OF HYPNOTHERAPY UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL OF THE MIND

Does hypnosis really work? Hypnosis, in different forms, has been around for centuries but it wasn’t until 1845 that the term “Hypnosis” was coined by Scottish surgeon Dr James Braid. Today, hypnosis, as hypnotherapy, is being used in many areas of health and there is a convincing body of evidence to suggest that the effects are more than simply placebo or imagined.

Like Dr James Braid more surgeons are now turning to the use of hypnotherapy to support patients undergoing surgical procedures. In one trial researchers randomised 150 patients undergoing breast surgery to anaesthesia-managed surgery and another 150 to hypnotic-induced sedation (Berliere, 2018). The hypno-sedation patients were also given a pre-surgery sedative and some received anti-anxiety medication during the surgery. The results were positive in their support of hypnotherapy as an effective resource during and after surgery. The hypno-sedation group had a 25 per cent shorter hospital stay and less anxiety. For those patients who went on to chemotherapy, there was less nausea and vomiting; and, for those on subsequent endocrine therapy, there was a reduction in symptoms including fewer hot flushes, and less joint and muscle pain. Other studies and reviews now support the use of hypno-sedation as an aid to surgical interventions, consistently showing less anxiety in hypno-sedation groups and, frequently, shorter hospital stays.

Another area that has shown promising results with the addition of hypnotherapy is smoking cessation. Although, when compared to other smoking cessation aids such as nicotine replacement therapy and pharmacotherapies, hypnotherapy has not proven more effective, when used as an adjunct to these therapies there is a statistically significant benefit on quit rates with the addition of hypnotherapy (Cochrane database, 2019.)

Hypnotherapy works by reprogramming the subconscious mind to break the habit through suggestion and deep relaxation. The addition of hypnotherapy alongside a comprehensive smoking cessation program helps the smoker change their underlying beliefs and thoughts regarding smoking. In this way, long-term abstinence is enhanced. Hypnotherapy has proven uses in the management of anxiety, and thus enables the smoker to stop smoking with less anxiety and more positivity.

If you would like help stopping smoking using an evidenced-based program that includes hypnotherapy, please get in touch. There is very little else you can do that gives such health benefits as stopping smoking.

ICONIC MODEL POWERS INTO NEW ERA

Aston Martin’s DB legacy is already sublimely impressive but the British luxury marque felt it was time to create an even more ambitious bloodline. The result, unveiled this spring to great fanfare, is described as the most complete and accomplished DB model in Aston Martin history – and “the world’s first super tourer”.

According to Aston Martin, the DB12 is the first of a new generation of sports cars that delivers a quantum shift and a grander definition of sporting character and dynamic capability.

“Combining a scintillating driving experience with exceptional refinement, state-of-the-art technology and indulgent luxury… the DB12 has been engineered to maximise performance and intensify emotion… as the product of a holistic approach aimed at rewarding the most demanding drivers.”

The DB12 presentation coincided with two other significant milestones in 2023: Aston Martin’s 110th anniversary and 75 years of the illustrious DB model line.

As the company notes, “When founders Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford officially formed the partnership that became Aston Martin, they ignited more than a century of automotive passion, cutting-edge British innovation and high-octane racing success.”

“DB12 is a statement car,” explains group chief technology officer Roberto Fedeli. “One that asserts Aston Martin’s position as a leader in performance, dynamics, engineering and technology. We have pushed every aspect of this car to be best-in-class. The result is more power and performance than its rivals. Combined with exceptional handling and an exciting soundtrack, it is a car with passion and a truly sporting character.

“Crucially, thanks to its breadth of capability we have achieved this without compromising refinement, comfort and luxury. Together with our use of industry-leading dynamic control and infotainment systems, DB12 is the start of Aston Martin’s most exciting new era.”

OPEN ROAD ...
168 JULY & AUGUST 2023

To begin heralding that era, the DB12’s meticulously honed chassis is matched to a class-leading 680PS/800NM V8 Twin-Turbo powertrain. The holistic approach behind its development starts with significant increases in structural stiffness and ends with Michelin Pilot Sport 5 S tyres made to Aston Martin’s precise specification. Supported by an all-new suspension system featuring the latest adaptive dampers, control and connection are further amplified by a precise and direct Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system and an Electronic Rear Differential (E-Diff) that enhances agility.

An industry-leading Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system employs six-axis inertia measurement to predict available grip, and drivers have a choice of five pre-set driving modes that allow “the freedom to incrementally explore the limits of grip and traction with complete confidence and safety”.

The DB12 is endowed with a 0-60mph (0-100km/h) time of 3.5 seconds and a 202mph (325km/h) top speed, and it is tuned to deliver 680PS/671bhp at

6000rpm and 800Nm/590lb ft between 2750-6000rpm – an increase of 34 per cent compared with the outgoing DB11.

As for styling, the interior has been completely redesigned, highlighted by an all-new, ultra-luxurious aesthetic, Aston Martin’s next-generation bespoke infotainment system and a suite of connected technology with surround sound system by new audio partner Bowers & Wilkins.

Driver-centric controls are ergonomically placed along the cabin centreline, ensuring maximum driver connection, while the car’s bold, horizontal lines are softened with elegant cabin jewellery and distinctive trim details, as well as hand-stitched Bridge of Weir hides and a new quilting pattern applied to full leather or Alcantara interior environments.

The bespoke infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a fully integrated multi-screen system and display using 10.25 inch Pure Black, 1970x720 high-resolution screens with ultra-responsive (30ms reaction time) capacitive touch control.

GOLDEN VISAS FOR SPANISH RESIDENCY

ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY WELEX LAWYERS & ACCOUNTANTS

If you would like to obtain residency in Spain and are a non-EU citizen, one way to achieve this is by means of the so-called “Golden Visa”. You can obtain this resident’s visa by acquiring real estate in Spain for a price equal to or higher than €500,000 per applicant.

Requirements to obtain the Golden Visa in Spain:

a) Must not be found to be irregularly residing in a Spanish territory.

b) Must be over 18 years of age.

c) Must not have a criminal record in Spain or in any of the countries where they have resided during the last five years.

d) Must not be considered “objectionable” in the territorial spaces of countries with which Spain has signed an agreement in this respect.

e) Must have health insurance arranged with an insurer authorised to operate in Spain.

f) Must have sufficient financial resources for them and their family members during their period of residence in Spain.

g) Must pay the application fee for the authorisation or visa (new residence €70.40, renewal €75.60).

The applicant must prove that they have acquired the property in Spain with a “Certification of Ownership and Charges” corresponding to the property, which is issued by the Land Registry. This certification will include the acquisition price. Alternatively, ownership can be proven by providing the corresponding “Purchase Sale Public Deed” in Spain.

The investment in a property of €500,000 has to be free of all charges or encumbrances. The part of the investment that exceeds the aforementioned amount may be subject to a charge or tax.

The residence visa for investors is valid for two years in Spain.

Spanish Residency Permit for Investors

If the applicant for the residence permit holds a valid residence visa for investors, or is applying within 90 calendar days of the expiration of the visa, they must also prove the following additional requirements…

The applicant must prove that the investor owns the property for the minimum amount of €500,000 per applicant in Spain. In order to do this, a “Certification of Ownership and Charges” issued by the Land Registry and corresponding to the property must be provided. In addition, it must be dated within 90 days prior to the submission of the application in Spain.

If the investment is carried out within marriage under a system of “common assets” or similar, and the amount does not double the aforementioned €500,000, it will be considered to have been made by one of the spouses. The other spouse may apply for a residence permit as a family member in Spain.

The initial residence permit for investors is valid for one year in Spain.

Once this period has expired, foreign investors who are interested in residing in Spain for a longer period may request a renewal of the residence permit for successive periods of five years, as long as the conditions that initially generated their residence rights are maintained in Spain.
