EDITOR’S NOTE >
Winter is definitely here. While friends and family in the UK and Northern Europe are struggling in arctic conditions, Spain, although having its fair share of rain, is relatively mild. But inside our homes it may be a different story. Many of us do not have the luxury of central heating like our friends up North. In this issue we tackle the problem and suggest solutions on how to heat your home to ambient room temperature for the three coldest months of year — from roaring fires to eco stoves, and solar water heating to dual air-cons. Also check out our guide on how you can add warmth and style to your interior décor this season with rugs, fabrics, lighting and window dressings. This issue also takes a look at major changes in the automotive industry as the first-ever Brighton to London Future Car Challenge took place in November 2010. The event showcased the latest hybrids, plug-ins, fuel cells and electric cars from major manufacturers worldwide. Many will go into production in the next couple of years including the Opel Ampera (featured in this issue) sales for which start in the fourth quarter of 2011. For the late Christmas shoppers, browse our Christmas Gift Ideas or visit one of the Christmas Markets featured in this issue. If you really want to get away from it all then why not treat yourself to a relaxing holiday and celebrate the New Year in style at one the top International Ski Resorts that we have featured — all winners at the recent World Travel Awards 2010. We hope that you enjoy the long holiday season ahead, the varied gastronomic offerings found along the Costa del Sol, the holidays with family and friends, and of course, the Winter issue of Home &

QROPS
Four years on and still a major opportunity but with specialist guidance! A development in the world of Pensions for many expatriates is described as a pension revolution. A scheme which allows you to transfer UK pensions overseas is available and called QROPS. So if you have a UK Pension …. read on.
Regional Manager for the Costa del Sol
discounted loan facilities automatically.
What does QROPS mean? Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme. These new schemes are arrangements fully approved by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. HMRC even publish a list of schemes which qualify on their website. What is a QROPS? A QROPS is a recognised overseas pension scheme. The rules must be broadly equivalent to a UK registered scheme and the manager must provide (HMRC) with information on certain ‘events’. If the QROPS is administered in a country where pension rules are more flexible, there can be great advantages for individuals once they have become non-UK resident. Please note… The individual does not necessarily have to reside in the country where the QROPS is domiciled. How are QROPS structured? QROPS are structured similar to UK pension schemes; i.e. there is an investment which is owned on your behalf by a pension administrator. This trustee must be based outside the UK and approved by HMRC as a QROPS administrator. What are the Advantages of QROPS? These schemes will not be right for everyone but they do provide tremendous scope for improving the flexibility and tax efficiency of a UK arrangement. Once you have been non-UK resident for five complete tax years, a QROPS has HUGE advantages … • No need to buy an annuity – UK schemes may insist that at 75 you buy an annuity or go into a system known as (Alternatively Secured Pension) where the fund can be taxed by as much as 82% ON DEATH. With QROPS there is no requirement to buy an annuity at 75 or go into ASP, this allows more flexibility and … • No Inheritance Tax (IHT) – A QROPS fund can pass free of IHT to your spouse or children. • Wider range of investments – QROP offer a wider range of investment options including in some cases direct property holdings. Although most restrict residential property to that held through a corporate structure.

• Loan facilities – BLACKTOWER CLIENTS have access to
• More flexible benefits – QROPS offer far more flexible approach to the level and style of benefits than that offered through any UK scheme. This can also be in respect of the amount of lump sum cash payable. • Transfer “Protected Rights” – These are benefits that are accrued in respect of contracting out of the UK state scheme. The BLACKTOWER QROPS is generally able to accept such payments. • Invest in any major Currency. QROPS can generally allow the fund to be held in any major currency. This can avoid exchange rate risks when receiving benefits. • Income may be paid gross. This is by no means an exhaustive list of the potential benefits, but for many expatriates the BLACKTOWER QROPS represents an almost unbelievable opportunity. I know this may seem too good to be true. However, these schemes are 100% legitimate and recognised by HMRC. As with everything in life, the advantages do come at a cost which will vary from scheme to scheme but you can expect to pay slightly higher fees than a similar UK pension scheme. Typically, there will be a small one-off set up fee plus an annual administration fee. BLACKTOWER clients benefit from reductions to these costs compared to other schemes in the market. As with all investments you should take great care and seek professional advice. Only consult advisers that are authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and are duly licensed to provide offshore advice. Check the credentials and financial strength of the QROPS provider and make sure that the rules applicable to the jurisdiction in which the QROPS is based permit the advantages and features you seek. OUR QROPS AVISORY SERVICE ENSURES YOU RECEIVE THE MOST APPROPIATE ADVICE FOR YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES. This facility is not suitable for all expatriates, and we recommend that advice is sought before one makes any commitment. As an Independent Financial Adviser, Blacktower seeks to ensure that our clients receive the advice suitable for their specific circumstances.

Eminence Effects creates artistic and dynamic living spaces, which are often far removed from the original décor scheme. Owner and artist, Matthew Corner, previously worked with Hesp & Jones, a well respected and reputable UK company who specialises in decorative restoration and paint techniques. During these years he built up a very distinguished clientele portfolio including: Earl Spencer (the late Princess Dianas brother) at the ancestral home, Althorpe House in Northampton; Alwick Castle for the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland; Arundel Castle for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex; Restoring gilding in St Pauls Cathedral, London; British Embassies in Prague and Paris; and Chequers, the Prime Ministers official country residence in Buckinghamshire. Matthew enjoys the challenges of creating artistic and dynamic living spaces, and takes great pride in taking the kernel of an idea from a client, and working with them to bring the elusive “minds eye” version to life. The new bathroom collection made by Inbani KA by Francesc Rifé is a collection of separate, modular pieces which can be imaginatively combined in a whole host of ways. In contrast to the rest of the pieces in the collection, the washbasin and bath, which are made of resin, eschew straight lines in favour of more organic contours. The mirror, which acts as the collection’s focal point, functions as a piece on its own or as an all-enveloping surface. www.inbani.com

CHRISTMAS TREE Keep it real this Christmas and take home an eco-friendly living tree - just follow our top tips for a lasting festive and fragrant focal point. 1. When choosing a real tree check for a goad shape, dense branches and glossy needles. A fresh tree will have flexible branches and pliable needles — a gentle shake will establish whether needles are shedding and you should avoid trees with brittle branches. 2. Norway Spruce is the favourite tree, however it does tend to shed its needles. lf you hate hoovering-up those pine needles then consider a Nordmann Fir, Noble Fir or Scots Pine as these all tend to retain their needles, where the Fraser pine is favoured for its classic tiered shape. 3. Fresh trees, whether cut or potted, will require regular watering throughout the festive season to prevent shrivelling 4. To ensure your cut tree lastss as long as possible cut 2cm from the base of the trunk to allow the tree to take in more water. Mount in a water-holding stand away from heat or direct sunlight and water regularly — you will usually need to top up your stand every day as a cut tree can drink up to a gallon of water a day. 5. If your cut tree is set within a block of wood, place a bowl of water at the base of the tree so that the air around the tree remains moist. Alternatively, if possible, place the entire block in a bucket or bowl of water and treat as for a cut tree 6. Rooted trees can be purchased ready potted or with a bare root ball. Bare roots should be soaked well before being planted in moist soil. AII potted trees should be watered regularly to keep the soil moist and kept away from direct heat 7. Before decorating your tree check out its shape. If you are not completely happy then consider carefully prunnig back the odd branch - cut on an angle to disguise cut ends. Adding Iights while Iit will help gauge whether they are evenly distributed and always stand back at regular intervals when hanging baubles to ensure an even spread. 8. Opt for a potted tree and it can be simp1y added to your garden scheme.

A stove heats a room better than an open fire and can replace a real fire within an existing fireplace. They are super efficient and the wood-burning type scores very highly as an eco option. Both woodburners and multi-fuel versions that burn wood and smokeless flue are available, as well as oil, gas and electric stoves. Modern stoves use clean-burn technology to send exhaust gases back into the stove so that dangerous particles are burned off, resulting in clean emissions. Choose from cast iron or steel, which is lighter in weight, and go for a black or coloured finish. Today’s stoves can sit on a pedestal, stand in the centre of a room, be inserted into a hole in the wall or even rotate. When drawing up your room plan, bear in mind that a stove usually needs to sit on a concrete hearth if you are burning solid fuel, and will need a flue, usually exiting through a chimney.
The corello standard fireplace comes in a choice of three finishes, graphite, bronze or stone effect. With a choice of two widths 1,000mm or 800mm and either pebbles or coal fuel effect. Available from The Fireplace Shop, Marbella.

DUAL AIRCONS Some of our rooms, particularly the bedrooms, have them to cope with summer heat, so why don’t we use them in winter. If you have a modern apartment, fully airconned, you are more likely to use them, swear by them for heating and not worry about the cost. Older houses rarely heat up well with them, and always cool down the minute they are switched off . Dual air conditioners are easy to use, safe and provide instant heat. One negative side is that most units tend to be a dry air heating and cooling. People have stated this can cause sinus irritation in already dry conditions. There are remedies for this, such as humidifiers that can be placed around the house, whilst newer units are beginning to see additions that include such functions. The biggest negative is that it can sneak up on your

On the Costa del Sol you can usually rely on getting to the festive season without feeling too chilly in the house, and it’s only now that our thoughts turn to heating. Many northern Europeans think the Mediterranean doesn’t get cold in winter and the issue of how to heat a Spanish villa to ambient room temperature never quite gets resolved. It is often warmer outside than in — Spanish houses are built to resist sunlight. Deciding on how to heat your home needs to be an informed choice based on cost in both financial and environmental terms. Structure plays a large part in the choice and effectiveness of heating. How you heat and how well you keep warm relate largely to your type of apartment, house or villa – stone, concrete, number of floors, thickness of stone, layout of rooms and number of windows. Very few people have central heating which requires planning while building or renovating and fewer still use alternative bio-fuels or have photo-voltaic panels installed — after all we only need heating 2-3 months of the year. The short answer to ‘how we heat’ is most of us don’t — effectively. We just wear more clothes. For the longer answer and heating options, read on.

Again, developments help here, as they are increasingly available in energy efficient models to help reduce the financial impact. As long as you set it to a reasonable temperature you will achieve comfort both physically and financially.
SOLAR & ALTERNATIVE ENERGIES Clearly, with all the sun Southern Spain gets, solar energies have come to the fore in recent years, and a lot of people are making use of government subsidies to install solar panels primarily for water heaters. Solar hot water systems can cost from 2,000 to 5,000 Euros, panels are usually placed on the roof, ideally south-facing, to top up a compatible boiler. Fewer install photovoltaic systems that generate domestic electricity as you need a good deal of roof space for that. PHOTO COURTESY OF PIAS CHIMENEAS
Nothing adds charm, romance, and cozy comfort to a home like a nice fireplace, and homeowners have lots of fireplace buying options to choose from. First, homeowners can choose between two major types: Solid fuel burning fireplaces, such as wood and pellets or gas fuelled systems. Either way a fire with a glass front is far more efficient than an open fire, which only operates at around 15 per cent efficiency. And second, among gas fireplaces, there are also both vented and non-vented styles available. Beyond the most obvious difference between the two principal types, that one requires wood while the other runs off a gas, each type comes with its own set of pros and cons. So how do you know which one is best for you?

GREAT HEARTHS OF FIRE

Wood versus Natural Gas Wood burned in the home should be a hardwood variety such as oak, and wood needs to be properly dried or seasoned - otherwise it won’t burn safely or effectively. Burning sappy, uncured woods can cause an accelerated buildup of harmfuI creosote within the lining of the fireplace and chimney - which is the most common cause of catastrophic chimney fires. Homeowners with wood-burning fireplaces should therefore have the chimney and fireplace inspected and cleaned by a licensed chimney sweep each year and avoid burning creosote-generating substances like green wood, pine kindling, or cardboard and paper fire starters. Those with a gas-burning fireplace don’t have to be concerned about those issues - and they don’t have to cut, split, stack or store cords of wood, either. Gas burning models with room-sealed, balanced flue designs are not only highly efficient but very safe as the design is completely sealed from the room. The Vent-Free Alternative Gas fireplaces offer another major advantage. Since all conventional fireplaces need to be vented through a chimney or pipe that releases to the outdoors, homeowners who don’t have access outside

Fireplaces have been a central feature in homes for centuries, but their design, technology and fuels have changed dramatically, especially in the past 10 years. Flames sprout out of torches or tureens; slip along a linear path through sand, stones or crystals; or blaze at temperatures hot enough to consume all the combustible material. Here are a few tips to make your fireplace more eco-friendly during the winter season: • WOOD. Use wood that has dried for at least 9 months, because it emits fewer pollutants and burns hotter and faster. • BIOMASS. Wood pellets , corn, and even denatured ethanol. All of these fuels are derived from plants, rather than from fossil sources. All of these fuels can be grown domestically, and in the case of wood pellets, the raw material already exists – it has only to be processed into the small pellet shape necessary for use in pellet-burning stoves and furnaces.

to venting may find themselves unable to go the conventional route. In that case — in lieu of spending a great deal of money on building a chimney — homeowners can still enjoy a fireplace with a so-called “vent free” gas unit. Models with a balanced or fanned flue, must be positioned on an outside wall. Flueless gas fires are 100 per cent efficient, using catalytic converters to turn waste gases into harmless vapours, so outside venting is not required. These technological wonders comply with strict safety standards for residential use and are a great alternative for those who stil1 want the cozy fireplace experience in the comfort of their own home — without the traditional means to do so. For a modern interior, consider fires with chic ribbon-effect gas flames or sculptural metal rods or pebbles instead of “coals”. H&L

• GEL FUELS. Fires fuelled by a smokeless gel, produce a decorative flame and make an attractive focal point when a real fire is unsuitable. The versions in bowls can be placed on a table. These have the same environmental benefits as other ethanol-fuelled heating systems, but tend to have a shorter burn time of only an hour or two.
THE MULTIFIRE 45 IDRO AND ARIA The Multifire is an innovative, vertically-extending firebox that burns either wood or pellets. Available in air- and water-heating versions, it’s the perfect heating system if you´re looking to blend tradition with innovation, and the heat of wood with the automatic practicality of pellets. In fact, this firebox, with its patented rotating self-cleaning hearth, works perfectly with both wood and pellets. The IDRO version is designed to provide domestic hot water and to heat the radiators of the entire home. This makes it perfectly compatible with water storage systems. ( up to 12.500 kcal/h). In the ARIA version, the thermal power of the Multifire 45 combined with the standard and a suitable duct system, provides heating for homes of up to 110 m2. In both versions the firebox can be used during the day as a normal wood burner and as an automatic pellet burner during the night. Pias Chimeneas,Nueva Andalucia Tel: 951 275 693

YOU WON’T DREAD THE CHILL OF WINTER IF YOUR HOME IS TIGHT AND COZY FOR THE SEASON. A FEW UPDATES CAN HELP YOU SPEND LESS ON YOUR ENERGY BILLS WHILE KEEPING WARM. COMPLEMENT YOUR SNUG HOME WITH A COUPLE OF VISUAL CHANGES FOR THE ULTIMATE WINTERIZED HOME.
PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR WINTER Put the Ceiling Fan in Reverse Check your ceiling fan for a switch that allows you to reverse the direction of blade movement to turn clockwise instead of counter-clockwise. Warm air rises, and the clockwise rotation of the blades forces the warm air down to where people benefit from it. Rearrange the Furniture Changing the furniture arrangement is an easy way to give your rooms a new look and feel for the winter. Pull seating pieces close to the fireplace to create a cozier mood, and bring out soft chenille or fleece throws to ward off the chill. Add a Throw Blanket Nubby knits are an ideal companion for chilly nights at home with a movie. Plus, they temporarily add seasonal pattern and colour to your home. Place throw blankets over your sofa and chairs, and even keep a few folded for the floor. Accent with Black Black, the universal symbol of sophistication, easily lends elegance to your home. Use it sparingly — just enough to make a statement, but not so much that it makes the room dreary. Think accessories when it comes to adding black. A black vase, a mahogany side table, or a black pattern on a tablecloth or lampshade are subtle ways of introducing the darkest of hues. Pile Up Pillows Paired with a warm blanket, pillows become snuggle buddies. Look for pillows with a lot of texture so they’ll stand up to all the touching, snuggling, and (maybe!) throwing. Then pile them on the sofa and think about investing in or making larger ones for the floor. Line Tables with Fabric Bare tables, while perfect for summer, are too stark for Winter. Cover them up with seasonally appropriate runners.

Try an Area Rug Nothing heralds the pending arrival of winter quite like a cold floor on bare feet. Fend off icy toes by placing area rugs in welltraveled spots in the home. Add Window Treatments Block chilly drafts from your windows by replacing sheer draperies with thicker, floor-length window treatments for the winter months. Let them pool an inch or so on the ground which adds opulence. This will warm up the room and freshen its look for a new season. Hang curtains over existing window blinds for an extra layer of style. Pile Up Bedding Stay warm on cold winter nights with bedding designed to keep away the chill. Layers of extra pillows, blankets, and quilts add comfort in the bedroom. >>

The colour of the walls, the window treatment and the floor covering play a part in the overall visual impact: the bedroom’s aura. LUXURIOUS FABRICS People love to be surrounded by the warmth and texture of fabrics - draped windows, upholstered chairs and couches, massed together fabrics in cushions and throws. Fortunately, we are blessed with a number of experienced textile houses such as Richard Lewis Interiors and Cort Idea, who love fabrics and know what works. In addition to fine local brands, we have access to an eye-watering array of labels from Europe, England, Italy and more. How then do you choose the right fabric for your home? As one experienced designer says: “the biggest problem with fabrics is simply that there are too many of them. Making a commitment to the one or two or three perfect choices for the job is no easy task”. Picking the right fabric comes down to appeal and suitability. As well as choosing the fabric to create the look you want to achieve, you have to be aware of the environment in which you are placing it. Interior textiles have many characteristics and the longevity of your fabric can be extended or reduced by many factors. Textiles are generally manufactured for specific applications, which fortunately are clearly displayed on the swatch labels and in the sample books. Some are suitable only for drapery or cushions, others for upholstery, while some can do both jobs equally well. And sample books often put together entire “stories” in fabrics, so that you can easily create a terrific scheme, mixing the right materials for

the right jobs. Many textiles are laboratory tested and rated for colour-fastness (known as crocking resistance in the commercial trade) and ultraviolet light resistance (how fast they might fade). However, all fabrics — if exposed long enough to direct sunlight (especially in our infamously high levels of ultraviolet light) — will discolour or break down. Natural fibres — cotton, hemp, linen or silk — have a beautiful hand-feel and look luxurious. That’s why they’re loved by designers and homeowners alike. The thing is, because they have less resistance to bacteria and fungi, they are more likely to weaken and rot. Silk is fragile in our sunlight, and cottons and linens tend to move as the atmosphere changes from humid to dry through the year… or day! Therefore, fabric houses are increasingly offering synthetic fibres that mimic the look and feel of the finest natural products. Synthetic fibres such as polyester and acrylics boast better sunlight resistance and durability, and have good thermal properties. Due to this, they have long lost their heap and nasty reputation. They are increasingly favoured for both upholstery and window treatments, which have to live up to wear and tear. Their stiffness can be used to great effect for full, opulent drapery. What’s more, to meet an increasingly fashion-driven market, textile technology is creating fabulous new fabrics with gloss, plastic, metal, and even wood or bamboo-like effects. >>

WARMTH UNDERFOOT Ariana, a stylish charcoal rug uses pattern and pile height to create depth and texture, a pair make a dramatic statement www.designersguild.com
Choosing the right area rug for a room goes beyond simply selecting a rug that you like. Existing factors within the room will determine the rug you should select. A common mistake many people make is merely selecting the rug they like best, without taking into account how it will work in the room. Factors such as floor colour, furniture colour, wall colour, and the amount of natural light a room receives will dictate what type of rug you choose. The first and most important variable that needs to be considered is the colour of the larger elements in the room. These elements include wall colour, sofa colour, and drapery colour. You should select a rug that complements or enhances this existing palette. In addition, the patterns of these elements will also play a role in selecting the appropriate rug. A general rule of thumb to follow is not to overdo it in selecting an identical pattern. However, you do want to select a pattern that coincides with the current theme of the room. Finally, floor colour should be taken into account as well. Lighter coloured floors look best with a rug of rich, deeper colours, and the contrast of a light area rug on a darker toned floor is striking. The amount of foot traffic a room receives, as well as the lifestyle of those using your room,

should be considered when choosing the material of your rug. Wool rugs are not only the most popular, but also surprisingly resilient. Most stains and dirt can be easily removed from a wool rug, in addition to the fact that wool provides good durability. Often times machine made rugs consisting of artificial fabrics are slightly easier to clean but don’t offer the same durability as wool rugs. Another important factor to consider is rug size. The existing furniture layout in the room will determine the size of the rug you select. Choose a rug that is large enough to cover the flooring under your major pieces of furniture. For example, in a dining room the rug should cover at least the floor space under the dining room table. You should also leave at least 24 inches of visible floor space around the edges of the room. Lastly, natural light plays a significant role in creating a feeling of space in a room. A lack of natural light can be made up for by decorating with lighter coloured furniture, walls, and of course area rugs. By following these simple rules and thoughtfully selecting an area rug, you will be well on your way to creating a pleasing look in any space you decorate. Photos © Kelaty
s a e d I d n a s Tip
Above … Inspired by many countries from all around the world, you’ll find international influences throughout much of the Kelaty range, whether traditional or contemporary style.
Rugs look great layered over carpet and especially stylish over a flat weave that will frame it, like wool sisal. Layering rugs is a lot like layering clothes — a skilful mix of styles results in an updated look. So, pile it on this Winter, and enjoy the endless possibilities. Wool carpets and rugs can make a statement in some very atypical areas of the home as well as they create a unique personal space as in a home theatre. Designers tell us that rugs are hard workers because they absorb sound. Heathered rugs in darker shades are also good at hiding everyday dirt tracked in from outdoors. If you are adding a rug or carpet to a fully decorated room, your best choice may be a solid style that contributes a single colour, or a subtle combination of shades, along with a bit of texture. A coordinating rug can also be
used in a room with patterned furnishings, but designers will generally advise that the patterns should not touch. In this environment, make sure your upholstered furniture has legs and that a solid-colour edge is added to the bottom of chair skirts and that full-length curtains are used to separate the two patterns. Think of your floor as your “fifth wall,” worthy of your decor attention, and don’t forget that it’s the surface people come in contact more than any other. Ideally, a rug or carpet should be the first purchase for a room, providing a palette that inspires the rest of the décor. By decorating from the floor up, you can pull accent colours from the rug to use as base colours in furnishings and custom window treatments. Coordinating patterns in accessories, such as custom pillows to pick up colours and patterns, add visual interest without causing pattern overload, and they‘re quick design freshen-uppers.

Sections of the living room you generally read your newspaper require more intense lighting. You can place low level floor standing lamps adjacent to sofas, tables or at a corner of the room. Using string lights available in varied hues and patterns makes a great living room lighting idea for lighting up sections used for party activities. Diffusion Living Room Lighting Ideas For diffused lighting during the day you could replace shutters and curtains on windows with folding screens made of paper, wood or fabric. Another interesting lighting idea is the use of white bulbs and indirect lighting to make the room warm and inviting. Well concealed task lights, spotlights or table lamps could be added for close work. To ensure good viewing,an appropriate light is required behind the television. The most common lighting method, a single light on a ceiling often makes the room look gloomy and unattractive. With the right lighting, even walls can add to the aesthetic beauty of the room.
For cool white light: choose a fluorescent lamp that states “cool white” or “daylight” on the package.

SHUTTERLY STYLISH Whether looking to shut out those dark winter nights, create a little privacy or simply filter dayllght, stylish shutters and blinds provide the perfect window treatment when it comes to creating a chic contemporary finish. To help you get started, here are the “top five” window treatment designs. Begin by asking yourself if you want the eye to be drawn first to your windows or the floors. Do you want your treatments for privacy, to keep out the cold? Do you want informal or formal? Don’t forget the little extras, light-filtering or room-darkening shades and breakaway cords safe for children and pets. Verticals. Blinds made of vertical slats rather that horizontal, in metal, vinyl wood or fabric. Available in numerous colours. If your flooring is more muted with less intense tones, avoid white, which can make a flooring look dirty or less crisp. Little window patterns tend not to compete with large pattered rugs or wood flooring, but do try to stay with colours you’re using on the floor. For a custom look, retailers can add fabric, say for a summery look to coordinate with a seasonal rug or the furniture fabric.
The roller blinds below by Luxaflex, feature a glorious and versatile colour palette of the highest quality yarns, textures, and structures with numerous exclusive fabrics.
Cellular (or honeycomb). Fabric or simulated fabric is seamed together in horizontal cellular pleats with spaces in between to trap warm air in the summer and cool air in the winter while still letting in light. These are more informal. They can fade into the background but still dress up the window. Use them to brings colour from the floor up the wall giving flow to the room. Choose a rug’s background colour if you don’t want to focus on the windows or the more dramatic colours if you do. Roman. Fabric shades which fold into broad horizontal pleats when pulled up and hang flat when open. Retailers have fabrics you can choose from to coordinate with your decor; you can provide your own fabric for a very custom look. With this look, you may want to blend into the background, and the look is stunning with tile and stone floors and inviting in soft pastels. Shutters. Available in real or faux woods, vinyl or metal and in colours. They provide lots of privacy and add an interesting touch to your window. They can look good with wood floors if they don’t compete. Check out shutter colours, shapes and styles and see if you prefer coordinated or contrasting shutters. Ask yourself if you want the eye to go to your windows or the floors. Add drapes for a touch of colour to blend in with your flooring and draw the eye from the floor up the side of the window.
Blinds are the window dressing of choice if you have a specific requirement for llght control and they create a modern, uncluttered look in the home. Roman or roller, vertical or horizontal — the right blind is sure to make your windows stand out in style. PHOTO: RICHARD LEWIS INTERIORS
ECO MINIMALISM If you’d rather leave your windows au naturel, performance glass could provide the perfect solution. Produced with a special coating that improves its insulation qualities, performance glass products can cost as little more than normal glass and can often be retro-fitted or reglazed into existing windows. Use tinted glass to repel up to 50 per cent of heat coming in, or a clear low-e (low-emissivity) glass that will insulate while retaining light and views.

In 1896, an small group of visionary’s left London for Brighton in an exciting new technology — the motor car. They participated in what is now known as the longest-running motoring event in the world — The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Today, over 100 years later a new breed of visionary’s left Brighton for London to trace the historic 57-mile route back to the capital — The inaugural Brighton to London Future Car Challenge. The event showcased the latest hybrids, plug-ins, fuel cells and electric cars. Held the day before the RAC’s traditional London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. The Future Car Challenge featured competitions in three categories — electric, hybrid and internal combustion engine — with more than 60 entries from major manufacturers worldwide. ELECTRIC MOBILITY BEGINS NOW Starting today, Opel will begin taking reservations for the 2011 Ampera, Europe’s first electric vehicle that also features extended-range capability Electric mobility is the best solution for reducing automobile emissions and dependency on petroleum but if electric vehicles are to have a significant benefit on the environ-
ment and society, they must be attractive to a wide variety of buyers, not just city dwellers. Now this ambitious goal has become considerably easier to reach – with the revolutionary Ampera electric car. The majority of drivers will find an electric car, such as the Ampera, remarkably easy to accept. That is because in addition to a powerful, 16 kWh lithium-ion battery, it has a unique electric propulsion system that extends its driving range. While providing all the benefits of state-of-the-art battery electric vehicles, such as zero tailpipe emissions and spirited performance, the innovative Ampera is not compromised by the typical disadvantages, such as limited range or long hours of immobility spent recharging a large battery. That makes the five-door, four-seat Ampera the first electric car in Europe to give owners the freedom to drive wherever, whenever they want, with no worries of being stranded with a depleted battery. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price throughout Europe for the base model starts at 42,900 euros, including national VAT. In Germany, with 19 percent VAT, the Ampera net price is 36,050 euros. Because trim levels will differ from market to market, prices in each country may differ. Customers wishing to reserve an Ampera can register at www.opel-ampera.com and become
• Environmentally Friendly: Family car drives 40 - 80 km electrically • Freedom: Battery re-charges in three hours; endless e-driving possible • No Anxiety: Range can be extended to more than 500 km when needed • Spacious: Five-door car seats four and has ample trunk space • Dynamic: Nearly silent torque feels like flying

an ‘ePioneer’, receiving exclusive news and a chance to test drive the electric car. In addition, they will be among the first to have the opportunity to own Europe’s first practical, family electric car. Sales start in the fourth quarter of 2011. Some competitors choose to split their offers for electric cars into two portions: a base price for the car and a leasing rate for the battery pack. This does make the price appear attractive because the battery leasing rate is not highlighted. However, battery leases are paid monthly for several years, so the total cost is roughly the same as a car whose total price includes both the car and the battery. Opel’s pricing scheme eliminates confusion by listing the total cost of the car and battery. Opel is also researching customer preferences regarding financing and leasing schemes for the Ampera. The company will announce these options later. “The Ampera defines a new class of e-mobility. No other electric vehicle provides the freedom of individual transportation as the Opel Ampera,” said Alain Visser, Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales at Opel. “We have compromised on nothing. The Ampera is a beautiful car that is as fun to drive as it is packed with premium content.”
Singer-songwriter Katie Melua is the new European brand ambassador for Opel and Vauxhall. The UK’s best-selling female artist in 2006 is excited about the electric vehicle Opel Ampera, which will be launched in 2011. The extended-range electric vehicle Ampera will accompany Melua throughout her European tour.

The Ampera is an electric vehicle that can operate in a wide range of weather climates. It is powered by electricity at all times and speeds. For the first 40 – 80 km, power is supplied by the electricity stored in the 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. While driving on electricity delivered by the battery, the Ampera drives free of gas- and tailpipe-emissions. Independent research found that about 80 percent of Europeans drive less than 60 kilometers per day, so the Ampera would meet their requirements. When the Ampera’s battery runs low, the battery can be recharged in about three hours at 230v by plugging the vehicle’s on-board charge system into a standard outlet. Because the battery can be re-charged quickly, most Amperas are likely to be driven in battery mode nearly all the time. If a longer trip is required, the gasoline-fueled engine/generator can seamlessly extend the total driving range to more than 500 kilometers on a full tank. This range-extending technology means the Ampera is suitable for worry-free daily use by the whole family. If electric vehicles are to have a significant benefit on the environment, they must be sold in high volume. Electric cars like the Ampera – with extended range capability – are the quickest way to reach this goal because they require few adjustments in lifestyle. The Ampera carries the DNA of Opel’s new design language – a prominent grille, bold Opel badge and daring boomerang headlamps. Every element of the Ampera was designed and analyzed for efficiency, making the Ampera one of the most aerodynamic and energy-efficient vehicles in the market. Inside, the Ampera is packed with the premium content fitting for a ground-breaking vehicle. From Bose speakers to touch-screen monitors, this car brings mobility to the 21st century. The Ampera already has won high accolades from specialists throughout the continent. Awards from authoritative magazines and websites include Greenest Car of the Year by www.whatcar.co.uk, innovation trophy from L’Automobile Magazine in France and best electric car by Auto Swiat in Poland. Taking titles for Most Economic Small Passenger EV and Most Economical & Environment Friendly Small Passenger EV, The Tata Indica Vista EVX, developed by Tata Motors’ UK subsidiary, is the electric version of the award winning Indica Vista with more environmental friendlyness. The Tata Indica Vista EVX completed the 58-mile journey from Brighton to London at an energy cost of £1.35, with a 36% depletion of the lithium ion phosphate batteries. This would give a vehicle range, in typical real-world driving conditions, of approximately 160 miles (258 km). The Tata Indica Vista EV will be a more practicable option for the consumer, capable of carrying four individuals, adequate luggage space, with a predicted range of up to 200 km (124 miles) and acceleration of 0-60 km/h in less than 10 seconds. It also comes with air-conditioning, power steering and power windows. Tata Motors Spain already has 500 orders for the Indica Vista EV which retails at around 24,000 euros, of which the company would make 200 deliveries by the end of this year.
Veteran Formula One car designer Gordon Murray is tackling the efficient city car challenge through his three-year-old venture, Gordon Murray Design. He describes the firm’s T.25 — which won the awards for Most Economical Small Passenger ICEV and Most Economical & Environment Friendly Small Passenger ICEV (internal combustion engine vehicle) — as a “major breakthrough” in city car design. Smaller than a Smart Fortwo car, the T.25 has the potential to dramatically reduce road congestion, according to Murray: as many as three of the vehicles can fit in one standard parking space, and two could fit side by side in on conventional traffic lane. Furthermore, because of the T.25’s size and weight, the car requires far fewer materials to produce — meaning a reduced environmental impact — and is more fuel-efficient than heavier vehicles. At the same time, the use of Formula One-derived materials makes the T.25 both strong and safe, according to Murray.
Set to enter the market in 2014, Volkwagen’s electric Golf blue-e-motion took the title for Most Economic & Environment Friendly Regular Passenger EV and was the overall winner of the inaugural Future Car Challenge. The electric version of the most popular car in Europe uses an electric motor which packs 115 HP and a lithium-ion battery pack and in terms of performance the car can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 11.8 seconds, has a driving range of 100 miles and it can hit a top speed of 86 mph. The car features a kilowatt gauge that lets drivers see how much energy they’re using when pressing their foot on the electric pedal. Volkswagen says the meter will help motorists intuitively strive to keep the kilowatt reading as low as possibly, thereby conserving energy. The blue-e-motion also captures kinetic energy while braking and feeds it back into the battery. A bright, center-mounted screen offers information on the car’s battery charge and power consumption as well as doubling up as the car’s satellite navigation and entertainment screen.

A cup of hot chocolate, turkey roasting in the oven, a bouquet of roses — when it comes to certain aromas, we can’t help but smile. Scents have the power to change our perspective and our mood. The practice of aromatherapy dates back to the ancient Egyptians who extracted oils from plants for medicinal remedies, cosmetics and embalming. The Chinese also studied these oils extensively and used them in religious ceremonies. Today oils are infused into lotions and candles. You can also purchase these essential oils to use in baths, massages and in diffusers.* If you’re not convinced yet, try some easy types of aromatherapy at home. Cook a dinner with basil if you need to jump-start your energy. Or eat a grapefruit when you need to face your fears.

Looking good and keeping fit has never been so easy, since Mundo Fitness opened its doors on Marbella’s Golden Mile. Brought to Spain by Art of Fitness, one of Ireland’s leading lights in the fitness industry, the bijou store is a veritable Pandora’s box of fitness goodies, with the shelves stocked high with the latest equipment, accessories, clothing and nutritional supplements. The dynamic proprietor, Muireann Gaffney, brings with her a wealth of experience in the health and fitness sector. The perilous economy of the past few years have resulted in troubled times for companies in every industry. The leisure industry including golf is not immune. With the growth in the number of golfers remaining stagnant while new golf course construction has continued apace, golf clubs are turning to loyalty promotions to capture a bigger portion of frequent golfers. To compete in such a golfer’s market, public courses worldwide are introducing loyalty programmes to entice new golfers and keep existing clients happy. Offers include special rates, free buggies or events. Over the past 20 years La Cala Resort has developed into one of the biggest golf and leisure destinations in Spain with three 18-hole courses and Spain’s only David Leadbetter Golf Academy. The resort’s “laCala&You” affinity card offers non-residents an opportunity to sample the facilities. The programme is open to anyone over 18 years who completes an application form in the resort or via the website. There are now over 2,500 members of the “laCala&You” scheme from 22 countries. The programme offers a range of benefits to its cardholders, including discounts on hotel, golf packages, free Spa thermal circuits, free buggies and hotel restaurant discounts. There are also exclusive competitions and events for members. The latest competition was the laCala&You Autumn greensomes which took place in October on Campo Asia. The competition was held in the greensomes (Stableford) format and the general reaction of the competitors was extremely positive. In particular, the cardholders enjoyed the opportunity to meet and develop friendships that can be renewed on an annual basis at subsequent events. “laCala&You Autumn Greensomes” Results: 1. < PETS AT HOME
Paw friendly tips for a fresh home and a Healthy Pet • Prevent unpleasant odours. Pet odours are a downside to sharing your home with a furry friend. These smells can become even more prominent during the cooler months when you cannot open the windows to let in fresh air. When guests are coming over it’s not uncommon for homeowners to worry about pet odours in the house. In fact, according to AcuPOLL research in Jan. 2010, 86 percent of cat owners believe that sometimes they cannot smell cat odours in their own home but others can. To combat this, use an advanced odour eliminating product like new Arm & Hammer Double Duty Clumping Cat Litter to destroy both urine and feces odours on contact. • Stay healthy, remain healthy. Healthy pets’ owners keep their areas clean and odour free. Just as we would not use a filthy bathroom, cats’ natural desire for cleanliness extends to their litter box. Keep the litter box clean by removing waste daily and changing the litter frequently. Be sure to keep regular vet appointments and monitor your pet’s behavior. Changes to litter box use habits may be a sign of a potential health problem. • Wash, tag, repeat. Though flea and tick season is

over, it is essential to keep pets clean. Put an appointment on the calendar for regular bathing which helps minimize shedding and odours. If the air is dry, use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to discourage excess dander. Also, make sure that you or the groomer puts your pet’s collar and ID tags back on afterwards. Even indoor cats may slip through an open door or window, so it’s important to tag as well. • Keep furniture fur free. Since pets may not have the option of lying in a sunny spot in the yard, they will need a cozy place to curl up in the house. To discourage pets from sitting on the furniture and getting pet hair all over you and your guests it is best to make sure they have their own beds. Just be sure to wash pet beds regularly to keep them clean and smelling fresh. • Maintain a scratch-free home. Whether you have cats or dogs, you know what a toll their nails can take on furniture and floors. To keep damage at a minimum, it’s important to trim pets nails regularly. If you’re wary of using traditional guillotine-type clippers, you have a few new options to consider, like nail grinders or nail covers.

Winter Gardening
BY CLODAGH AND DICK HANDSCOMBE Practical gardeners and authors living in Spain for 25 years.
THERE IS PLENTY OF WORK TO DO IN GARDENS BEFORE AND AFTER THE FESTIVE FORTNIGHT. HOPEFULLY THE WEATHER WILL BE DRY AND SUNNY TO ALLOW THE WORK TO BE ENJOYED.
TRIMMING FOR CHRISTMAS Luckily you have resisted the urge to do a northern Europe style autumn cutback and have focussed on pruning and dead-heading plants to maximise year end colour and delaying the biggest annual cutback to January/February. So just wander around the garden and trim dead flower heads and unsightly or dangerous growth. A weeding and sweep up of fallen leaves will also spruce up the year end garden.

WINTER /
Window boxes and containers can be still planted up with plants that can add colour for Christmas and the new year and continue through until the Spring. Popular possibilities include poinsettias, chrysanthemums, pansies, decorative brassicas, mock peppers, cyclamens, azaleas and heathers. If the weather is dry it’s not too late to plant spring and summer bulbs and make final sowings and plantings of over wintering vegetables. Flowering and fruiting trees can also be planted in areas that do not have serious frosts. The list of possible trees and frost and drought resistances are included in Part Four of our book Your Garden in Spain.
< THE GARDEN PROGRESSING CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS The coolest months of the year are, of course, an excellent time to progress those garden projects that require the most physical effort. Such as building or repairing terraces, creating raised beds for flower and/or vegetable gardens, building ponds, constructing rockeries, converting a normal swimming pool to a natural eco pool, installing fountains and laying down paths and terraces. All except the natural pool are within the capability of the average handyman and create a good deal of satisfaction when in action, planted up or used for the first time. Naturally if you are a non-gardener or constructor then it’s also a good time to get contractors in to work at a time that you are using the garden least.
ENSURE YOU MINIMISE ACHES , PAINS AND WORSE FRESH PRODUCE FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON Congratulations, if you are ready for December harvesting — green leaf vegetables, new potatoes, carrots, onions, young garlic and fresh rosemary, sage and thyme ready for flavouring stuffings. We have been delighted by the number of new garden raised beds and veggie plots, plus terrace and roof top mini container allotments discovered in recent months.
WINTER CUTBACK FOR SPRING AND SUMMER JOY Post Los Reyes, the main annual cutback and cleanup needs to be carried out to … 1.
Downsize shrubs and trees to match the size of the garden, and to reduce the chance of trees losing branches in storms.
2.
Take and replant root cuttings of perennials to expand block plantings and start new ones. Root cuttings and replant.
3.
Maximise the formation of flowering growth for the spring.
4.
Stop shrubs from becoming straggly.
5.
Stimulate fruiting buds on fruit trees. Guidelines for pruning are included in Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain. Strawberry beds can be cleaned up and offshoots planted up top to expand beds and replace old non productive plants. Likewise for raspberries if you are living inland and high up.
The winter cutback and construction projects are a challenge, great exercise and satisfying but unfortunately can be the cause of aches, pains, twists and sprains, and at worst hernias especially for those aging or infirm. So ensure you dress warmly especially before the winter sun has raised temperatures towards midday, and use ergonomic tools designed to minimise physical problems. We have changed our aging tools for those designed, manufactured and marketed by Fiscars, which are ergonomic, sharp and most importantly light. Ladies, those infirm and those with arthritis were given special thought in their design. Their Secateurs, saws, long pruners, multi headed changeable tool sets, adjustable handle length spades and forks really do help. Most importantly they don’t have wooden handles that dry out during the summer and snap just when you don’t expect it in the winter. We enjoyed discussing such issues and others at the Over 50’s Show in Estepona, held late November.
DON’T WASTE THE CUTBACKS Many prunings can be used as cuttings to produce new plants for planting between the Spring and Autumn, depending on the variety of plant and the speed of developing a strong viable root ball. Other prunings can be shredded and layered in a compost heap along with weeds, leaves and green kitchen waste. If you have yet to get to grips with making good compost in Spain, the success factors are explained in illustrated chapters of Your Garden in Spain and Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain. If you have comfrey plants, add layers if still in leaf or as soon as they sprout in the Spring, this adds valuable nutrients and accelerates the composting process.

Coronet Peak is the closest to the town itself and benefits from a good access road. The terrain is varied and there are lots of natural half pipes, kickers, gullies and bowls to enjoy. The Remarkables are called such PHOTOS.COM as their sheer beauty dominates the view from Queenstown, whilst the skiing is gentler than their appearance belies. With a bit of hiking though you can gain access to some great backcountry chutes and bowls. The nightlife is varied and fun with restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets and bars that rock all night long. Head down in

SIERRA NEVADA, ANDALUCIA
With the highest mountains in Spain and the most southern ski resorts in Europe, the Sierra Nevada is right on our doorstep. The Sierra Nevada resort has skiing at an altitude of over 10,000 feet and brilliant sunshine most of the winter. With good weather the views are spectacular — almost unbelievable. From the top of the Veleta peak, skiers can see across the Mediterranean to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The resort town is modern with a hint of traditional charm. It is purpose-built. It is here only for skiing and has been well located for that pursuit. It is not a traditionally Spanish enclave, nor does it appear in any sense Alpine; however, if you want to find snow in southern Spain, this is the place to be. When it does snow, it comes down light and dry because of the low humidity in Southern Spain. When it doesn’t snow, Sierra Nevada has one of Europe’s most advanced snowmaking systems. What Sierra Nevada does exude is the intoxicating Spanish love of the good life. There are lively tapas bars, quaint shops and elegant hotels climbing the mountainside. No one who comes here forgets good food and spirited nightlife. ON THE SLOPES There are over 65 kms of ski slopes in the ski resorts of the Sierra Nevada, and you can expect snow for approximately 5 months a year. Sierra Nevada is ideal for all ski holidays and snowboard aficionados and the resort caters for everyone from beginners to experts. The slopes range from simple to scary The El Rio slope being the famous daredevil piste - 3km/545 near-vertical drop.

Reserva Selecta targets both the end user through its online store which accounts for 70 percent of its clients, and fine dining restaurants, which receive a special service and represent 30 per cent of its clients. The wines of Reserva Selecta are in fact already on the menus of emblematic restaurants in Andalusia, such as El Lago and Skina de Marbella. Lakeside Picnics in Ronda
PHOTOGRAPHY © GARY EDWARDS
IDYLLIC COUNTRY FINCA SETTING FOR SUMPTUOUS 3-COURSE PICNICS AND PRIVATE EVENTS The region’s gastronomy is unmistakably one of the highlights of Andalusia with al fresco dining one of the greatest pleasures awaiting visitors to Southern Spain. Taking outdoor dining to new heights is new venture, Lakeside Picnics offering the possibility to dine on delicious, freshly cooked cuisine, in a blissfully peaceful and private outdoor setting. With acres of land to spare at the beautiful finca north-east of Ronda, and taking inspiration from the spectacular outdoor dining options available in South Africa, the proprietor has created an idyllic lakeside setting in which 16 privileged guests can wine and dine in style under the shade of leafy oaks. RONDA COUNTRY FINCA LOCATION Building everything including the lake itself, Lakeside Picnic’s newly created oasis offers picnic tables, a freshly cooked three-course meal, and the service of the delightful Alex, who is managing the new venture. Easy to locate, just 9 kilometres from Ronda, the idyllic Finca La Noria comes complete with the ancient water wheel that gives the finca its name, along with a tinkling waterfall, a stream, and a serviced “casita” from which the picnic feasts are conveniently delivered by golf buggy. With all the charms and none of the inconveniences of a picnic, Lakeside Picnics are catching on fast. Firstly there is no thinking about the menu, no cooking, and no precarious transporting of dishes and drinks along bumpy country roads. With Lakeside Picnics, all you need to do is pick up the phone and reserve your date, and the staff will take care of everything else. Once you settle at your chosen wooden picnic table, seating four, Alex will deliver a hamper full of wine glasses, plates and cutlery – and a cool box replete with chilled white wine and water and soft drinks, along with some tantalizing locally-produced red wine. LEISURELY LAKESIDE LUNCH The food itself – all home-cooked – is a treat. Lakeside Picnics provide a full-blown threecourse lunch to be enjoyed at your leisure. The menus are prepared with homegrown fruit, vegetables and herbs from the finca’s kitchen garden, and dishes are tasty and original. Among the dishes on the pre-selected menus are succulent Stuffed Peppers with Tomatoes and Fresh Basil; Creamy Chicken with new potatoes and a crunchy Green Salad with Pomegranate; Spinach Roulade with Smoked Salmon or Quails Stuffed with Kumquats and Toasted Pine Nuts. For dessert, how about: Apricots in Orange Cinnamon and Brandy; Freshly-made Brown Bread Ice-Cream or Zucetto, a chocolate creation with cherries in Kirsch. A good selection of wines is available, sourced mainly from the renowned Ronda bodegas, and the picnics are rounded off with generous helpings of tea and coffee and liqueurs. Why not indulge in a post-prandial siesta on the comfortable cushions provided, the perfect finale to the leisurely picnic lunch experience. Lakeside Picnics are available by appointment for up to 16 people. Finca La Noria is also available for special events and celebrations, and is ideal for painting groups. COMMUNITY AND CHARITY NEWS ALONG THE COAST > ANGELES MUÑOZ WITH NIEVES MONTERO, PRESIDENT OF DEBRA SPAIN
New Respite Home for Butterfly Children Marbella’s Mayor, Ángeles Muñoz offically inaugurated in October the New Respite Home created by the Butterfly Children Charity in Marbella. After cutting a big blue laze as symbol of the inauguration, Angeles Muñoz congratulated DEBRA, The Butterfly Children charity for their hard work and for having been able to put together such an important service as the Respite Home. The Mayor also dedicated very touching words to Nieves Montero, mother of a boy affected by the Butterfly Children condition, who founded the charity and is today its president. Sponsors and collaborators, whose help has made possible the new Respite Home, attended the event also to support the Charity in such an important moment. The new Respite Home is a very relevant achievement for such a small charity. The new facility will be a place for respite as well as a centre to be assisted by DEBRA nurses, psychologist and social carer for Butterfly Children and their closest family members. When a terrible disease such as the Butterfly Skin Condition happens within a family, all its members are seriously affected by it. Specially the mother, who must give up everything in order to look after and dedicate to her ill child that so much depends on her. Therefore a “respite” is so much needed. Many families, not only from DEBRA Spain, but also from DEBRA UK will benefit from this project.
