DESIGNERS GUILD

RICHARD LEWIS INTERIORS

EDITOR’S NOTE > Claude Monet once said: ‘Colour is my day-long obsession, joy and torment’ – such is the influence that colour in its infinite palettes, hues, and saturations, can have on our mood and manner. The pages of this issue of the Home & Lifestyle magazine are oozing with colour; the vivid lime greens, hot reds and bright pinks of contemporary and stunning outdoor furniture; the colours of nature in the delightful mixture of floral prints in the new fabric collections; the colour and hue of glass art and the changing shades and reflections in glass architecture; the opulent palettes of two recently refurbished exclusive hotels, and the glitz and sparkle of the world’s most famous Boulevard. You will find colours that are inventive, inspiring and imaginative, and colours to suit your style, personality and, of course, your home. They are all in this Spring Edition of the magazine. With summer nearly on our doorstep, it is time to add pizzazz to your outdoor living area with new outdoor furniture collections that oozes energy. For your home’s interior bring spring inside with a scatter cushion or two in glorious floral prints. Just remember, when choosing a colour scheme for your home it is something that you have to look at every day — there really is something out there for everyone. In need of a break this season, why not have lunch at the Le Royal Monceau in Paris or afternoon tea at The Savoy in London. If you are rolling in money, then the exclusive Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas is ideal with more than 150,000 square feet of casino gaming. If you need to be closer to home, then enter this issue’s competition on page 79 for your chance to win a weekend away at a spa on the Costa Brava.

Healthcare plans that everyone can afford Generally, there are two reasons for wanting private medical care. • To avoid being placed on a long waiting list. • You feel you are getting a better treatment. However, there are often factors that make it impossible for everyone to benefit fully. • The monthly premium increases every year as you get older, with an age limit beyond which you receive no cover. So when you need it most, it is either denied to you or it becomes unaffordable. • Exclusion. If you have already suffered an ailment or have a chronic illness or any other problem remotely connected with it, this is excluded and not covered by the policy. With SimpleCare, you pay a mere 12 per month to enjoy complete in- and out-patient care at rates usually available only to major insurance Companies. This means that: • You receive private treatment in hospitals and diagnostic centres with specialists, oral maxillofacial surgeons and dental care. • You only pay, when you need the treatment. • There is no age restriction or exclusion because of medical history. • And you avoid those expensive monthly premiums, saving you a tidy sum every year. The SimpleCare network of heath centres and hospitals is equipped with the latest technology that will provide SimpleCare clients with state-of-the-art and personalized treatment. In addition, should you require a second opinion, the best internationally recognised specialists are at your service. As an additional separate service, SimpleCare also provides a nonurgent home health service. An experience GP can visit you in your home, workplace or hotel, usually within a three-hour period, saving you hours waiting for a doctor’s appointment. It’s easier than ever to get the quality health-care you deserve! Cover for HighCare, Parque San Antonio, Chip, Santa Elena and Quiron private hospitals in local area.

Local Property Auction House goes from Strength to Strength 2010 was a resounding success for local property auction house, Direct Auctions, and the start of 2011 continued to see more properties coming under the hammer. From a catalogue of 26 properties, 17 were sold at their first auction in 2011 on the 31st January. All properties were sold at levels MUCH lower than the advertised guide price. Representatives from UK Property Companies were in attendance and 2,747,000 euros in sales came under the hammer. Due to their outstanding success in 2010, with a large amount of properties between Estepona and Fuengirola going under the hammer, Direct Auctions are now in need of properties to sell within these areas. In addition, they are also seeking high value detached villas between Los Arqueros and Elviria, due to high demand. All Direct Auctions portfolio of properties are pre-surveyed, free of debts, and are available for viewing prior to auction. For more information on property lots for sale and upcoming auctions in 2011, please contact Warrick Wincup.

CLIENT TESTIMONIALS Hi Warrick, Just a quick note to say thanks for your help in getting the sale of the apartment completed. I know Dorothy spoke to you the day after the sale completed but we wanted to take this opportunity to write thanking you for your efforts, which were over and above what could reasonably be expected. There were a number of occasions the sale could have fallen through during the process without your constant efforts to ensure to keep everyone on board and we are delighted with the result. On a final note we would have no hesitation in doing business with you again and would recommend you to anyone looking for a committed agent to sell their property. Barry & Dorothy Homan To Whom It May Concern, After 2 years of frustration, several agents and no sale we approached Direct Auctions in Marbella and met with Mr. Warrick Wincup. Warrick was a gentleman who impressed us with his enthusiasm, knowledge of the property market and his professional attitude. With excellent marketing, both local and via the internet he successfully found us a buyer and the sale is now going through. I would have no hesitation in recommending Warrick Wincup to anyone considering selling or buying a property, as he worked tirelessly on our behalf to secure the sale. M. Mahoney

The prolonged rains of winter have ceased and the sun warms the spirit. Slowly, the native fauna spring to life and with it the eventual return of the summer season and the opportunity to revitalize your outdoor living area. A simple, no-nonsense approach to reinventing the outdoor area for a new summer look should begin by creating a focal point to every angle of the landscape. Whether it be a water feature, pergola, fireplace, entertainment centre or kitchen, you should set the scene visually to draw the eye to these different locations. Using colourful fabrics or unique seating with clever lighting can help define those places. The first thing to do is identify a style and then create a colour palette that will coordinate nicely with colours and fabrics inside but are uniquely their own for the outside. Pay particular attention

to details, and having more than one colour really adds a lot to a setting. You can make a striking impression with the different fabrics and colours that are out there. From lime greens to hot reds, careful fabric selection can be the pizzazz in any outdoor room. Don’t get scared by the indoor look of today’s outdoor furniture fabrics, the new fabrics are bold and exciting and they’re made for outdoors. Many of these wonderful new fabrics and colours can be found on the latest in overstuffed deep seating arrangements, action pieces such as swivel chairs and gliders, and double chaise loungers and outdoor beds that have become a very popular component in outdoor room design. Before diving into an outdoor room project, it’s best to consider your lifestyle and needs. There designers and homeowners will find important tips such as solidifying their outdoor room vision: will it be a casual or elegant setting; will there be room to entertain large or small groups; will it include a fireplace or fire pit; or, will it include an outdoor kitchen. The size and layout of the backyard must also be considered: will it catch the morning or afternoon sun; what’s the wind direction; and will there be an adjoining garden. And, no matter your budget or available space, there’s an outdoor great room to fit your outdoor plans including a garden. In areas with small backyards, pergolas provide a place where plants and vines can intertwine and combine garden and sitting area.

DECKING

A great solution for levelling a sloping site without having to do any major groundwork, decking can be used to create a platform with steps and balustrades, or simply a seamless link from the inside to out with a patio at the back of your home. Naturally weather-proof hardwood decking such as oak or cedar needs little treatment, but softer woods need protecting and sealing regularly. Choose rough-sawn or textured finishes for a non-slip surface and be aware that natural decking can become slippery when wet. Or try a composite material such as TimberTech, which is a low-maintenance and safe option that looks like wood. If you go for a real wood and want to stain or protect the deck, there’s a great selection of waxes, stains and treatments from Cuprinol, some of which are available with spray or roller applicators for quick results. To keep natural wood decking looking its best for longer, you will need to fix the decking to a frame or raft to keep the planks clear of the ground; you will also need to make sure the site is free draining, otherwise the timbers will rot. The good news is you can fit a deck over existing patios, but if you’re fitting it over a lawn it’s worth installing a weed suppressing membrane beneath the deck to stop any unsightly weeds shooting through the cracks once the deck is in place.

Although this may be the traditional choice for outdoor living spaces, you don’t have to be traditional in your choice of design or materials. These can range from rough-hewn granite setts to modem polished sandstone. Or go one step further and choose an inside/outside surface such as natural slate and run it from your indoor living space to the patio, combined with a wall of sliding doors for a seamless transition into the garden. Natural stone is the ultimate choice for patios, with the inevitable variations in colour and texture giving a unique look. Alternatively, consider the stone-effect concrete slabs or reconstructed stone for a more affordable option . Before you start fixing paving in place, layout the slabs to see if you’re happy with the size of the patio area and the arrangement of the blocks. This is especially useful when working with differentsized slabs that need to be laid in a random pattern, leaving you free to make any changes before they’re fixed. When you come to lay it, you will need to prepare the ground with a good layer of sharp sand but for a more stable surface it’s worth using a cement-based foundation instead.

ward off direct sunlight and wind. Many times the dining table-mounted umbrella cannot provide the shade needed for a relaxing meal. A side mounted umbrella is much more effective in providing shade for a broader range of sun locations and is aesthetically pleasing. These kinds of umbrellas also eliminate the visual blockage in the centre of the table that traditional umbrellas create. Creative outdoor lighting will add to the outdoor experience but should not shine up or on a neighbour’s property. Pathway lighting is very important to consider, particularly when it’s a route that guests use to leave in the evening. For those who can’t do without, there are outdoor televisions and audio systems to round out an outdoor bar or entertainment centre. Just remember to install those in an area where the volume will not exceed zoning restrictions. As homeowners renew their commitment to expand the backyard living area, they will uncover numerous products that will enhance their comfort and enjoyment. From colourful fabric selections and stylish furniture to pergolas and layout design, the options for outdoor living are endless.

When choosing your swimming pool construction company, don’t forget that there are many optional items that are worth considering as you begin building your backyard paradise. • Chlorination and Sanitation of the Water. Traditional methods of chlorine tablets, granular chlorine or liquid chlorine are not the only methods being employed today. Consider the options of using a salt generators system or an in line chlorine tablet feeder to chlorinate your new pool. • Upgraded lights for your swimming pool and spa. Automatic colour changing LED LIGHTS are some of the hottest items on the swimming pool scene today. • Heaters. How to heat — electric heat pumps offer energy efficient heat, gas heaters offer faster heat and solar heaters offer inexpensive heat. It is important to research all your available options for pool heaters before deciding which type will function best in your application. • Water Features. Deck jets, bubblers and water falls all add unbelievable interest to your backyard paradise. • Automated Control Systems. Controllers can operate a variety of components including the pump, lights, spa air blower, heater, garden lights and much more. • Custom Mosaics. Tile mosaics are available in a wide range of options, seashells, fish, underwater scenes, cartoon characters, trees, sports logos. Jazz up your pool and spa with tile mosaics. • Automatic Pool Cleaners. There are three different types of cleaners — suction side cleaners, pressure side cleaners and an electric cleaner. All types work well, research the one which will function best in your situation. • Test Ki. If you plan on servicing and maintaining your new pool yourself DO NOT purchase the least expensive test kit on the market. Purchase a kit that tests for free and total chlorine, pH, alkalinity, harness and cyanuric acid. As you construct your new backyard oasis research and review the many options that are on the market today to make your swimming pool much more than just a “cement pond”.

The Art of Glass

Dale Chihuly Glass Exhibit, Oklahoma City Museum of Art

DATING BACK OVER 4,000 YEARS, NOBLE FAMILIES OF ROME, VENICE, PHOENICIA AND EGYPT HAVE DECORATED THEIR HOMES WITH GLASS ART. PEOPLE WITH VISION AND WEALTH DEFINED GOOD TASTE BY ADORNING THEIR HOMES WITH THE WORK OF THE BEST LOCAL ARTISANS. TODAY, THEIR

Many groundbreaking discoveries came about by chance! In 1928, bacteriologist Alexander Fleming found a mould had contaminated one of his experiments. To his surprise, the mould turned out to be an antibacterial agent...and so, penicillin was born. Another remarkable creation is the multifaceted and challenging media of glass. By melting combinations of soda and sand, our ancestors found, upon letting the mixture cool, that its composition had changed into a transparent ‘glassy’ mass. Trial-and-error resulted in one of the largest industries to date. The creation of glass continually evolved with additions of limestone, lead oxide and boric acid. Metals like cobalt, copper, manganese, gold and silver would change the consistency, clarity, colour weight and strength of glass. The Venetians were the first to become world leaders in the manufacture of glass. The Crusades and the

HOME DÉCOR > conquest of Constantinople in 1204 opened the way for extensive trade practices throughout the Eastern Mediterranean and in various Islamic territories. The result was an exchange of cultures - which allowed the Venetians to adopt the practices of the glass producers in these once foreign lands.

RICHARD LEWIS INTERIORS

MORE THAN CONQUERORS However, the Venetians were the ones that took the art of glassmaking to another level by adding minerals and pebbles to the glass silica. ‘Oxides’ were also added to the silica, creating a splendid multi-coloured array of glassware. The Venetians also received accolades for perfecting clear glass known as “cristallo.” Nowhere was the art of glass more evident than on the islands of Murano. Murano is a group of islands lying on the edge of the Adriatic Sea in the lagoon of Venice, about 3,000 meters north of the larger group of islands comprising the city of Venice. This was the glass centre of the Venetian industry, and glassmakers had the same

34

SPRING

status as “royalty,” and had privileges denied to ordinary citizens; but in exchange for such titles and privileges, the government virtually imprisoned them in an attempt to protect the secrets of the glass trade. If one of these artisans tried to leave the island to practice their craft elsewhere, they were condemned to death for committing treason. The Republic of Venice put this mandate into effect in order to isolate the master glassblowers, in order to keep control and monopolize the industry of glassmaking. There was a period in Venetian history when the glasshouses supposedly caught fire and the Venetian authorities moved all the glasshouses to the island of Murano. Whether the fires were rumour or fact; by moving all production to Murano, the Venetians not only protected Venice from the hazards of fire, but also insured government regulation and State protection, ensuring no competition from abroad. As a result, Murano glassmaking became the leading source for fine glass in Europe and a major source of trading income for the Republic of Venice. The glass pieces of this period were ornate and considered luxury items. Through this ostentation, a strain of utilitarian design developed and mirrors started to appear which provided a high revenue turnover. Artisans competed amongst themselves, constantly developing more complex and intricate glassmaking techniques and continually pushing the boundaries of thought, images, use, and opinion. Unlike any other material, glass envelopes the mystical qualities of colour, hue, and light. Old world artisans have introduced us to glass that delights our senses with endless colour schemes, light refractions, and artistic designs.

FEENIX FURNITURE

The world is chock full of beautiful fabrics in every colour of the rainbow and at every price. From chintz to silk to cotton knowing what and how to add the finishing touch will give your home a sense of style. The ideas and possibilities are endless, but to keep a room looking designer sleek there are a few rules to follow when it comes to mixing patterns. Take a good look at your home and the colours you’ve used. You’re palette may all ready be established and if it is you’ll move on to looking for fabrics within your chosen colour scheme. Using between two to four colours is a good place to start. Now you want to mix patterns such as stripes, polka dots, and florals, no problem, just follow the guidelines and you’re on your way to fabric creations that harmonize with the room. MIXING PATTERNS • For patterns to blend well with each other there must be a common thread. It can be colour, pattern, or theme, but colour is the easiest route to follow. As long as the colour palette remains the same you could mix patterns forever and they’d look great together. • You can use the same pattern but in different colour combinations. Keep in mind that the palette remains the same. An example: A pink and green print on a black background juxtaposed with the same print in pink and black on a green background. • Always using the same colour combination allows you to use the same pattern but this time in different sizes. This idea works especially well with polka dots, checks, and stripes. • Try using different patterns that are related through theme in the exact same colour scheme. A garden of floral fabrics in different flower shapes but all in the same colour. Another way to use this concept involves extremes. Choose a large pattern and a tiny one, again in the same colour combinations. • Yes, you can combine florals, plaids, checks, polka dots, and stripes as long as they are take advantage of the same colors.

As you pull your room together with fabrics, choose one bold pattern, a more subtle one, and then give the eye a rest with solid colours added to the mix. Only one strong pattern should be used in each room. A small and large floral can become part of a room if they share a theme or colour combination. A good rule of thumb suggests that you spread the pattern about the room and not weigh the room down by placing all the pattern in one place. The tendency to create beautiful throw pillows and pile them all on the sofa adds weight to an all ready large area in a living room. Go ahead add some life to the living room party, give a spark of interest into a bathroom or bedroom, and turn ordinary into special with fabrics for the home in a bevy of colourful patterns.

Glass In Architecture: Unbreakable Dreams Words by Jorge Alonso Rodríguez Architect and Traveller

Eco-Resort in Bahia, Brazil (in collaboration with Alca Studios)

42

SPRING

Glass is not crystal, but crystal can be glass in one of its transformations. Crystal is another thing, simple and basic — sand, water and fire. Crystal can be transparent, volatile, bright, black and captivating. It can change shades as you walk by its side, but it can also be lethal. We all know that it is magic, a material I would define as captivating. Like good stories — impossible but real. Crystal is anything but simple, from infinity and beyond. A LITTLE HISTORY The history of this amazing material began with the Egyptians 4,000 years ago and the Romans also used it in various ways, mainly decorative, until the eighteenth century. But it was only 150 years ago that crystal became a more common versatile material, and applied to construction in a massive way. I truly believe that glass is the eye through which light enters into our homes and leaves in the evening for family dreams. For many it’s just part of a window, for some a dangerous handrail and for others, children’s worst enemy. Allow me to go a little further from the limits of what we all call “Crystal”.

Crystal is an inorganic material — hard, fragile, transparent and shapeless. In other words, indescribable. It is elegant, bright, captivating, mysterious, attractive, but not unbreakable, quite the opposite. You could say that, despite its long-standing origin, only now are we discovering the material’s constructive possibilities, as new technologies, and present and future applications make glass one of the most useful, magical and ecological materials we have in our reach. ARCHITECTURE AND GLASS, THE INFINITY It is important to say this material came before concrete or steel but its use in construction is very recent. There is no doubt that without this wonderful material architecture would not exist as we understand it today, and what lies ahead is yet to come: liquid glass, insulating glass, safety glass, cellular glass, float glass, laminated, reinforced glass, tempered glass and glass … function, expression, light and space. An obvious example of its spectacular and well-know use is the “curtain wall” (glass facades where the support method is based on anchoring to a metal substructure)

Wall of Light, Architecture Competition in Gijón-Spain (in collaboration with Vincent D.Faixat and Takayuki Miyoshi)

Seagram NYC, Mies Van der Rohe & Philip Johnson Kimmel Art Center, Rafael Viñoly in Philadelphia that can easily adapt to any shape. And for many years, glass has been combined with reception methods of sunlight in various shades, degrees and transparencies, as well as the environmentally friendly use of energy and solar radiation. In all projects known as “sustainable architecture” glass is the element by which, under a good policy guidance, light and heat essential for life is captured. Contemporary architects are aware of this and so much more such as: Jean Nouvel, Mies Van der Rohe, Richard Rogers, Herzog & de Meuron, Sanaa, Toyo Ito, Norman Foster and long ago Mr. Joseph Paxton, the creator of the stunning Crystal Palace, built in 1851 for London’s Great Exhibition. It’s impossible to include a list of all architects who have given and still continue to give a twist to the use of glass in construction and decoration, creating buildings and spaces impossible to imagine. GLASS AND MOTHER EARTH Marriage between steel and glass was a pivotal event for the building and construction history —nothing would ever be the same for today’s architecture. It’s a combination which make mankind have a dignified outlook on to the vast divine chaos of nature’s creative perfection. Glass doesn’t exist within nature, it’s been found thanks to Mother Earth. One of the most magical and innovative design options, which fortunately I have encountered and experienced in my work, has been the possibility of creating buildings constructed and designed with glass. It is a material that, amongst other things, reflects the surrounding environment, looking and allowing to gaze, tinting glass curtains into a thousand colour glass shades, forming Babel towers of light, often turning the building into an open book in which the city looks upon itself. In my experience, as an architect in different countries and with various multidisciplinary teams, I’ve had the luck of being involved in project designs, where after much thought on different materials, glass was needed for landscape blending and environmental respect, expiration and inspiration of peaceful light, strength and character in its brightness, use and function as a material, metaphor and resource of the site, energy and generation control and even artistic expression. I fondly remember the creative task we planned trying to reflect the Caribbean’s immense brightness on to the tower’s facades. All this often happens in combination. A wonderful challenge. Glass a man made material with nature’s inspiration. GLASS AS A CONSTANT CHALLENGE Today, the use of glass in architecture is a fantastic challenge which has yet to be deeply investigated, particularly in a world where the techno-

44

SPRING

logical future only lasts a few months. Contemporary architecture implementing the technological advances in glass can be found in the four towers which form Madrid’s new skyline, Barcelona’s Agbar Tower, the British Museum’s great courtyard, the Gherkin tower in London, the Kursaal in San Sebastian, and of course, currently the world’s tallest building, at 828 metres in height, the Burj Dubai, which deliberately didn’t disclose its final height to the world until just a few days before its opening. No doubt, a good way to create publicity, not that it needed any more than it had initially done, the Burj Dubai still astonished the world. Maybe, the next architectural dream would be to fulfill Frank Lloyd Wright’s dream of a one mile building (1,609 mts). Unfortunately despite being certain that his dream would one day become a reality in the futures he would not live to see it. Frank probably knew that the technology wouldn’t arrive for him in time, or perhaps to others, but he knew that glass would be the best partner for those who would ever dare to turn his dreams into reality. I sincerely hope that all this creative process never gets broken into a thousand pieces and still continues to be a worthy project according to mankind needs. DOMOTICS, HOME AUTOMATION, UNBOUND LETHARGY – CALL IT WHAT YOU WILL – BUT THE IDEA OF LYING ON THE COUCH AND REMOTELY MANIPULATING YOUR DOMESTIC ENVIRONMENT HOLDS HUGE APPEAL AMONG THOSE UNABASHED BY MODERN TECHNO-CONVENIENCE.

PHOTO: RICHARD LEWIS INTERIORS

< HOME DESIGN

Of course there are generations that cuss at the automation of simple domestic tasking, but we say to the rest of you, ‘techno notice’. These unfortunate few are frozen in time, languishing in a hessian-clad era where setting the VCR was left to the resident three-year-old. That very same threeyear-old is probably notching-up thirty now, conveying through the decades an early nurtured technological addiction and harbouring a deep-set ravenous hunger for push-button convenience. It’s simply in the blood now, a genetic expectancy to shuffle through a mountain of remotes on the coffee table before settling down to the latest Divx version of “It’s a Wonderful Life”; digitally re-mastered and beamed over the wifi super-highway from your state-of-the-art PC to your 50inch LCD surround-sound home cinema system. You know who you are … However, did you close the curtains manually or set the mood ambience via an archaic dimmerswitch system before weeping uncontrollably at George Bailey’s self inflicted non-dead deportment? Bet you did; and even that pile of remotes in the fruit bowl doesn’t translate to true home automation. Sadly, unless your HiFi talks to your tumble dryer through the wifi, or in other words, unless your house has a living breathing working ‘microchip’ soul, intelligently interconnecting every electrical gadget under your roof, I’m afraid you really are lumbering in the twentieth century.

PHOTO: RICHARD LEWIS INTERIORS

PROGRESS. Home automation has been with us for decades, earlier versions relying on bulky sonic or infra-red overtones, an abracadabra clap for the curtains — one for open, two for close and hey presto — as 007 as it might sound, it never really caught on; cheese factor and cost being the major stumbling blocks. But these days evolution has dispelled of all the gadget-gorgonzola and microprocessor affordability has brought the costs down to a realistic level. So, expanding your mortgage (ever so slightly) and thinking smarthome from the foundations up is getting more and more popular.

SO WHAT IS A SMART HOME? It’s basically what it says on the tin - smart - a thinking home, a computer-integrated home system that knows when you are home and knows what you need - and considering you had the decency to build it – should pander to your every whim. And what with the recent surge in mobile phone functionality, your personal GPS coordinates can set off sequence of heart-warming electronic home greetings; from simple entrance lighting to a whole conduit of home-coming faultlessness including warmth, practicality, comfort and of course entertainment. As a by-product, all this automated functional switch-boarding is incredibly energy saving if you consider man’s general laxity when it comes to operating heating timers and leaving lights on. A required task is activated according to occupant movement and general ambient requirement. Trust us, surging energy bills will stabilise, or if not, show a considerable drop-off. Your carrot-cake munching green idealists, while frowning at all the luxury, won’t be able to deny the impressive sustainability of such a smart solution.

HOW DOES IT SIT? You’d think with all the expense involved - and with the impressive nature of an integrated Domotic environment - owners would want all that computer-synchronised gadgetry on bold display, but vulgarity just doesn’t seem to fit the bill. Much better a clandestine electronic underbelly, humming away behind false reveals and hollow ceilings. A minimalist playground of hidden luxuries, pre-programmed for the most, with manual override provided by one central hand-held remote – leaving the fruit bowl free for... apples and stuff. Designers agree, and as intelligent systems forge further into futurism (a statement only effectively accentuated by using three f’s together in that way) then so do the latest designs resemble what only George Lucas could have dreamed about a few decades ago. Jean Nouvelle’s post-modernist take on the Domotic environment and how it should operate is a perfect example, his touch sensitive light-shape control panels offering a stunning dynamic, and a unique control language light years ahead of anything else we’ve seen, save a Millennium Falcon or two. In the end. The outcome of this domestic technological revolution is more than just convenience. However, we’ve mentioned the importance of energy saving and how that fits in with the modern energy crisis, but there is another element of essentiality. In this modern world, with ups and downs, credit crunches and the surging costof-living, the modern household is predominantly vacant. More family members have to work, and those members need to spend longer at work to bring home the beans. Consequently, quality time at home becomes a precious commodity, and the integration of essential subsystems lends itself well to affording security, safety and comfort in such a situation. With that little electronic heart pumping away at home scanning for burglars, regulating heat, checking for fires, doing the laundry, preparing a movie, answering calls, feeding the dog, cleaning the pool and just generally doing what we’d all do if we had time (only in the most efficient manner), you know that your few hours at home each night will be good ones. And even though at the back of your mind you’ll feel that you are never truly alone, your silent-running electronic cocoon will consistently welcome you home with open arms, ready for undying and unequalled service… At least that is, until it spits you out the door next morning - lavishly refreshed and ready for work – after all, someone has to pay for all this automated opulence.

IT’S TIME fOR…

Planting! A Great Time to Plant, But!

MARCH, APRIL AND MAY, ARE EXCELLENT MONTHS TO STOCK UP OR RESTOCK YOUR GARDEN AND APARTMENT CONTAINERS. NOT JUST WITH FLOWERING AND EVERGREEN PLANTS BUT ALSO WITH PRODUCTIVE CULINARY AND MEDICINAL PLANTS, FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. GARDEN CENTRES ARE FULL OF TEMPTING OFFERS, BUT DO RECOGNISE THAT MANY HAVE BEEN RAISED UNDER PERFECT AND CONSTANT HOTHOUSE CONDITIONS, VERY DIFFERENT TO THE REALITIES OF OUR GARDENS AND APARTMENT TERRACES AND ROOFTOPS.

BY CLODAGH AND DICK HANDSCOMBE Practical, holistic gardeners, authors and speakers living in Spain for 25 years.

50

SPRING

Be realistic about what you plant. Just because, it’s in the garden centre does not mean that it will like the hot summer winds or the cold ones of next winter. In the short term, beware. Phase your planting both along the coastal plain and inland valleys. Recognise that initially the microclimate in city blocks will be a degree or two above front line exposed apartments, and they above inland situations. Things equal out during the summer, but now, plants need to get off to a good start before the hot summer months. In exposed situations, and on north facing slopes and terraces be aware of the impact cold winds can have in your garden. If the soil is moist from recent rains, now is an opportune time to plant fruit trees, flowering trees, shrubs and perennials. Also, summer bulbs if you spot any still for sale. If you are likely to be faced with water shortages, or last years summer water bill was high, plant more drought resisting succulents and perennial herbs, which

even keep coastal hills green in the summer. There is a wide variety to choose from as illustrated in the plant tables of our book Your Garden in Spain – Planning, planting and maintenance. Plant trees for shade in future summers and internal and external hedges to improve the microclimate for the more tender plants. Even on the Southern Costas it is essential to develop a benign local microclimate before planting subtropical and tropical plants. The average temperatures published by tourist boards and estate agents are indeed the best in the world, for persons and plants alike, but it is the extremes – highest and lowest – that gardeners need to be aware of. The location, degree of wind and shade protection are factors that need to be considered for earlier planting. When escaping to the shade or air conditioned room, flowers and leaves of plants may rise to seventy or more degrees, even though the ther-

mometer shows temperatures in the forties. Most do not need sun all day long so plan the garden so that there are semi and dapple shaded areas for planting.

HERBS ARE GREAT IN ALL LOCATIONS If you love cooking or have an interest in healthy living extend your collection of herbs. For those living in apartments and indeed others, included in our book Apartment Gardens Mediterranean Style is a list of herbs for small and large terraces and ten beneficial herbal infusions. Including, mint which aids digestion and helps seasonal hangovers, rosemary to boost sagging energy levels and memory, and stevia as a natural sweetener. Visit www.dolcarevolucio.cat for a list of convenient suppliers for the latter herbs..

BUY INTELLIGENTLY When purchasing annuals and subtropical/tropical shrubs, climbers and trees, find out where they came from and whether they have been hardened off. A plant raised by a local nursery often establishes itself more quickly than an imported forced hot house plant. The latter may be varieties of native or naturalised plants. If they are first grown in unnatural, forced conditions, they have not been naturalised until they have been hardened off, planted and nurtured successfully through several winters and summers in your Spanish garden!

RECOGNISE WHY NEW PLANTS DIE The five most common reasons that plants die young or fail to mature quickly are as follows. 1. Plants purchased have poor underdeveloped root balls. 2. Plants are planted in small, narrow, shallow holes, in unprepared soil. The roots struggle to expand sideways and downwards out of the planting hole especially in heavy clay soils. Shallow rooted plants do not survive the hot gales from North Africa, even if watered every day, and are not sheltered by drought resisting taller plants planted down wind. 3. Purchase plants when fully in bloom and even in the case of citrus trees with fruit already on the trees. The first priority, in Spanish gardens, is to encourage deep root growth. 4. Over watering so that roots don’t go down and the first time you leave them especially as absentee gardeners they suffer. For instant lantanas will not survive their first two years without regular watering but within three or four years, their tap roots can extend vertically down for a more than a metre searching for water. 5. Even in deep soil roots can tangle together and strangle themselves resulting in stunted shrubs and trees which under perform and die. If planting areas are not loosened around and below where the plant is to be planted, and the plant roots are not spread out when planting, it can cause poor performing citrus trees. This is illustrated in our book Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain.

FOR CONTINUOUS NATURAL GROWTH FEED THE SOIL AND NOT THE PLANTS. Improving soils and composts always pays off. We recommend using ecological slow release dried manures, bags of worm compost or TerraCottem soil improver. The latter can reduce watering needs by 50%, which is invaluable in gardens and apartment containers. Hungry, as well as thirsty annuals in window boxes, will naturally benefit from top up feeds each month to keep them flowering but do not over do it. Fast compared to steady growing plants tend to be more susceptible to insect and fungal attacks and sun and wind burn.

RECOGNISE THAT MANY VEGETABLES CAN BE GROWN SUCCESSFULLY IN SMALL SPACEs Yes, even in the space of an A4 piece of paper! Starting this week you could have numerous varieties of sprouting seeds to add to spring salads. Miniature carrots and radishes germinate easily and grow well in 25 cm plastic pots in a semi shaded area on a terrace, as do tomatoes and peppers. For those living in apartments Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style explains how vegetables can be grown all year in a wide range of containers on terraces, balconies and windowsills. Covered terraces have an advantage over open gardens in that the containers can be given shade from the hottest suns by shading them with blinds or on roof tops with awnings. Last spring we came across a roof top, with an eating area in the middle, covered in a prize-winning collection of bonsai’s. Both humans and plants survived the July/August suns under a year round awning covering the entire roof top. Yes, they did have a small bore watering system that watered each shallow bonsai tray three times a day. It was a delightful low maintenance garden with marvellous mini shaped bougainvilleas and hibiscus amongst the spring flowering pomegranates, cherries and Judas trees. So take courage this Spring. Plant up creatively and make the garden and apartment terraces more colourful perfumed and productive as ever before but with lower risks.

Home Improvement Regulations in Spain BY LAW, ANY MAJOR OR MINOR STRUCTURAL CHANGES WE MAKE TO OUR HOME REQUIRES BUILDING PERMITS FROM THE TOWN HALL. THIS IS A SIMPLE AND COST-EFFECTIVE PROCEDURE. By Miguel Ruiz Manz, VIP Homes

VIP Homes T: (+34) 952 666 291 M: (+34) 610 748 099 www.viphomes.es

52

SPRING

Life can be very easy if we follow the law. We automatically do this in most cases, such as a driving licence, car insurance and respect for traffic rules. Violation of these rules can result in fine. We also pay our taxes in order to avoid problems with the tax authorities, and so on. So why not respect the legal rules and regulations when we make home improvements? Obtaining permission to build, make structural changes or improvements to our homes is an important process in Europe. So why should Spain be any different? On the Costa del Sol, the same rules apply like in our neighbouring European countries. Any changes made to our homes requires building permission and permits from the local Town Hall. Unfortunately, in Spain, this has not always been the case. There is a perception from home owners and builders that it is considered unnecessary and not always valued. Think again! On the spot inspections can be made, neighbours can complain, or an anonymous phone call can be made to the authorities. This can be enough to create an unpleasant and complicated legal situation. Transparency combined with technical and legal advice throughout home improvement stages is highly recommended. In order to obtain the correct advice, approach a contractor that provides more than just construction, such as a professional building consultant. Architects and building companies that supply additional services in-house are highly recommended. They should offer added value: an all-inclusive package (technical, legal, construction), tailor-made solutions, professional presentations incorporating 3D imaging, stage reporting throughout construction work and a

multilingual workforce. An all-inclusive package simplifies the coordination of your project and communicating with one contact person makes life easier for you. There is a small cost for this service, but it far outweighs a hefty fine from the Ayuntamiento, a result of not having the required paperwork from the Town Hall. Generally, the Town Hall requires the following in order to issue building permits: Project information such as total surface, location, detailed description and quotations for the work. In addition, architectural drawings of the planned project and new layout are requested. If the improvements are for a commercial premise, further information may also be requested with regard to sanitary facilities, noise adaptations, terrace occupation, amongst others. The approach of many builders is to offer their own “multitalented personnel” without using specialised craftsmen. Other companies only offer specialised personnel for a specific need and offer the best team and equipment for that need. Some workers lack professionalism, training, or qualifications. Specialised companies have very targeted duties offering a guaranteed job. Using unprofessional contractors on the Costa del Sol have resulted in many problematic construction issues, including humidity and homes that are not fully legalised. Fully complying with building regulations on the Costa del Sol will ensure that you will not run into problems down the road, face a complicated legal situation, or in extreme cases have the work carried out demolished by the Ayuntamiento.

The GranCabrio represents the very essence of Maserati in terms of open-top cars. It’s a Maserati in the purest sense of the word and a car with high emotional appeal — from its luscious looks and Pininfarina styling to the V8 engine’s thrilling sound and amazing performance. While following in the footsteps of tradition, the GranCabrio features four full-size seats, for the first time in a Maserati convertible, so that the rear passengers are not merely supporting actors, but co-stars in every journey. The Maserati company’s mission is, and always has been, to deliver the unique Maserati motoring experience to the world’s most discerning drivers. This 95-year old tradition is gloriously celebrated in its latest model, the GranCabrio. Destined to be forever a rare and impressive sight, the GranCabrio is a luxury four-seater with sleek and seductive lines — the epitome of elegance that announces its arrival with the unmistakable growl of a mighty V8 engine and the glint of its celebrated Trident badge. To drive or be driven in a Maserati GranCabrio is a feast for the senses: its looks are simply stunning, its sound is unforgettable, every surface is exquisite to the touch, and even its aroma arouses sensations of opulence and luxury. The GranCabrio is the summation of Maserati’s long cherished values: immense power, inspirational handling, bodily beauty and all-enveloping luxury, so that every journey becomes an unforgettable experience. THE POWER OF BEAUTY The Maserati GranCabrio bears the unmistakable signature of the famous Pininfarina styling studio. The striking headlights extend horizontally and blend perfectly into the con-

tours of the nose section, while the centrepiece of the oval grille is Maserati’s legendary Trident symbol in chrome. The dynamism of the front profile is accentuated by the short overhang and the long bonnet, with three chromed air intakes adorning the front wings in classic Maserati style. The side panels are embellished with eye-catching chrome detailing at the top, which is echoed at the bottom with specially sculpted fairings that also pick up the light with dramatic effect. The gorgeous profile is then finished off in style by the car’s impressive 20-inch Trident design alloy wheels which fit tightly into the wide wheelarches, creating a powerful stance and a statement about the car’s performance potential. The rear end of the Maserati GranCabrio emphasises its sporty, high-tech character, with triangular taillights that use 96 LEDs to ensure maximum night-time visibility, and a wide, aerodynamic rear valence is framed at the sides by two pairs of large diameter chrome exhaust tailpipes. The Maserati GranCabrio is a genuine four-seater that allows all four occupants to enjoy the experience of driving with the top down. With the roof closed, the car has an elegant and beautifully proportioned profile. Then one touch on the control button opens the roof in just 28 seconds and puts on show all its sinuous, handcrafted interior beauty. The individual rear seats, which are shaped like the front seats, provide a snug and comfortable personal environment. It is, without question, a car like no other and with Maserati’s almost infinite range of colours, trims, and custom options, owners can make each and every car a unique expression of their own highly individual personality.

LEADERS IN THE HOSPITALITY AND CATERING INDUSTRY

LA PESQUERA

The 1980s was the beginning of an era for the prestigious Spanish restaurant chain, La Pesquera, when entrepreneur and businessman, Ramón Mesas opened the doors of La Pesquera’s flagship restaurant, then called El Timón, in affluent Puerto Banús. Today, with the hard work and dedication of its employees, La Pesquera has expanded to become a major chain of restaurants and catering networks on the Costa del Sol. In 2004, with five established restaurants along the Coast, Ramón introduced La Pesquera to Madrid with the opening of La Pesquera Casa de Campo, and at the beginning of 2011 their second restaurant in Madrid, the seventh in the La Pesquera chain, opened its doors on Calle Cava de San Miguel, nº 8, next to Madrid’s Plaza Mayor. “MI CASA ES SU CASA” (MY HOME IS YOUR HOME) La Pesquera’s restaurants are situated in ideal locations which enhance the very essence and ambience of the Mediterrean — the old town of Marbella, La Casa de Campo in Madrid and at frontline beaches where the light from the terraces will captivate you, making you feel very much at home. Each restaurant is supported by a fantastic working team with the best in customer service. Their products meet the highest quality standards and the best of our gastronomic culture. Exquisite plates, created in a professional and caring way, La Pesquera’s cuisine is made with passion and elaborated with traditionally cultivated products. You can truly savour the “good taste” that La Pesquera has to offer you and your family, and enjoy a great variety of dishes from the menu. In addition to their on-demand service, they also provide and organise events such as weddings, communions, christenings, birthday parties, dinners and business lunches, to name a few. With our great variety of speciality menu choices you can be assured that your special event or celebration is a success. Furthermore, they can provide ISO 9001 and 14001 certificates, which is a mark of their high standards. The Marisquería La Pesquera for example, is one of the few restaurants on the Costa del Sol which has the benefit of both ISO certificates, granted by AENOR.

ke and o h c i t r A Hot Dip Spinach Try this hot, flavourful dip with toasted bread or tortilla chips. This dip is amazing — so cheesy and fragrant. If you don’t like artichokes, don’t worry — you’ll never know they’re in there! The only question is: “Is it okay to just eat it with a spoon right out of the dish?” Ingredients 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup sour cream or mayonnaise 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup grated Romano cheese 1 clove garlic, peeled and minced 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt salt and pepper to taste 1 (14 ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped 1/2 cup frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Method 1. Preheat oven to 175 degrees oC. Lightly grease a small baking dish. 2. In a medium bowl, mix together cream cheese, mayonnaise, Parmesan cheese, Romano cheese, garlic, basil, garlic salt, salt and pepper. Gently stir in artichoke hearts and spinach. 3. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Top with mozzarella cheese. Bake in the preheated oven 25 minutes, until bubbly and lightly browned.

Waitrose’s version of the classic Scottish dessert, made with strawberries, caramelised oatmeal and yogurt. Ingredients 600g strawberries, hulled and quartered 50ml Védrenne Supercassis liqueur 25g caster sugar 50g of “Alford” Medium Oatmeal 50g light brown soft sugar 500g pot Waitrose Natural Wholemilk Bio Yogurt 4 small sprigs fresh mint, to decorate Method 1. Place the strawberries in a large bowl and gently stir in the liqueur and caster sugar. Leave for 10 minutes or so to allow the fruit to soften and absorb the flavour of the liqueur. 2. Meanwhile, place the oatmeal and brown sugar in a small heavy-based saucepan over a gentle heat and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring continuously until the sugar has dissolved and the oatmeal is golden and caramelised. Remove from the heat. Spread the oatmeal out on a plate to cool, breaking up any large clusters with a fork. 3. Just before you are ready to serve, fold the caramelised oatmeal gently into the yogurt. Assemble the dessert by spooning a layer of the strawberries and liqueur into the base of 4 small glasses. Top with a layer of the yogurt mixture. Repeat the layers, spooning any remaining liqueur over the top. Decorate each one with a sprig of mint and serve immediately. COOK’S TIPS: Make the dessert with desiccated coconut instead of oatmeal. Caramelise the oatmeal in advance, cool and then store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

ge with n o p S y r her fresh C and Almonds os Pistachi This moist cake has a light yogurt filling, which tastes really good with the ripe cherries. Ingredients 250g softened butter 250g caster sugar 4 eggs, beaten 100g self-raising flour, sifted 100g shelled pistachio nuts, roughly chopped 200g ground almonds 250g Total 0% Fat Greek Yoghurt 400g California cherries, washed, pitted and halved, reserving a few whole cherries for decoration 1 tbsp icing sugar, sieved, to dust Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4. Lightly grease a deep 23cm-diameter cake tin and line the base with baking parchment. 2. Beat the butter and sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg, a little at a time, until it is fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth. If the mixture starts to curdle a little, simply add a spoonful or two of the flour and carry on adding the egg. 3. Fold in the flour, pistachios and ground almonds. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden and springy to the touch. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for 10-15 minutes. Turn the cake out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. 4. Cut the cake in half horizontally and spread the yoghurt over the base. Scatter over the halved, pitted cherries. Sandwich with the remaining half of cake. Dust the top with icing sugar and decorate with the reserved whole cherries. Cut into slices using a sharp knife. COOK’S TIPS: The unfilled cake will keep for 1-2 days in an airtight container. Once filled, eat within a day.

Asparagus

us Salad gg g a r a p s Warm A th a Poached E wi Topped

This colourful, warm salad combines asparagus, potatoes and peppers, and is topped with a soft poached egg. An ideal vegetarian supper. Serves: 4 Ingredients 500g baby new potatoes 2 tbsp olive oil 1/2 tsp (Bart) Picante Pimentón (smoked paprika) 2 packs bunched asparagus 1/2 x 350g jar (Gaea) Flame Roasted Red Peppers, drained and chopped 4 large eggs 4 tbsp Maille Hollandaise Sauce Method 1. Boil the new potatoes for 10-15 minutes until just tender, drain and allow to cool slightly. Cut into thick slices. Combine 1 tablespoon of the oil with the paprika and add to the sliced potatoes. Toss gently to coat. 2. Remove any woody stems from the asparagus by bending the bases. They will snap at the point where the woody part begins. Heat the remaining oil in a griddle or frying pan then add the spears in a single layer. Cook for 5-6 minutes, turning once, until lightly charred and tender (you may need to do this in 2 batches). Transfer to a bowl and keep the spears warm. 3. Add the potato slices to the pan and griddle for 2 minutes on each side until lightly charred. Place in the bowl with the asparagus. Add the peppers to the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes to heat through. Tip into the bowl with the asparagus and potatoes and toss together gently. 4. Pour boiling water into a clean frying pan and return to the boil. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer, then crack 2 eggs at a time into the water and poach until the white is cooked through. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. 5. Divide the asparagus salad between 4 plates. Top each with an egg and a tablespoon of Hollandaise sauce. Serve with slices of lightly toasted bread.

Artichokes, a Delicious Thistle

In the 16th century, eating an artichoke was reserved only for men. Women were denied the pleasure because the artichoke was considered an aphrodisiac and was thought to enhance sexual power. Spain is the largest producer of artichokes, growing about 30% of the world’s supply and is the major exporter. Shopping and Preparing Artichokes When shopping for artichokes, choose the ones that are heaviest and whose leaves are closed or compact. The colour should be green with few brown spots or blemishes. If an artichoke’s leaves are opened, it is not fresh and is beginning to dry out. To store fresh artichokes at home, sprinkle them with a little water and refrigerate in an airtight plastic bag. Do no wash before storing. They should last a week when stored properly. When preparing artichokes, it is important to trim the stem, remove the tough outer leaves and trim the ends of the leaves. Since the cut edges turn brown quickly, rub edges with half of a fresh lemon to prevent discolouration. Once cooked, they should be eaten within 24 hours. int? e) in pr ine.com our nam y emagaz h it m o (w h s e d ip c c nts r re editor@ ngredie see you d with i cipe to n e r a L l a Want to A rigin IGIN letely o our OR e comp Email y b t s u m ecipe Spain rkets in NOTE: R uperma s t CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM a le b availa

Latest Trends: Wedding Dresses DESIGNERS RECENTLY DEBUTED THEIR SPRING 2011 WEDDING DRESS COLLECTIONS. THE OVERALL FOCUS IS ON GOWNS THAT ARE FEMININE, SOFT AND FASHION-FORWARD.

72

SPRING

One of the most sweeping trends are “threedimensional” dresses made of Tulle and Organza. There is also move toward slimmer silhouettes and less emphasis on embellishments. The most fashion-forward dresses focus on using beautiful fabrics that are draped, layered and detailed. The trends in wedding dresses also includes Colour, coloured trims, Princess and Mermaid styles. COLOURED DRESSES — The Avante-Garde Bride will have more options than ever to select a colored gown. Vera Wang showcased a Deep Gray Silk Tulle gown in her Spring Collection. The intricately crafted flowers on the bodice and skirt add dimension and the Black Satin sash enhances the waistline. COLORED TRIMS — For the Brides that haven’t completely embraced wearing a coloured gown, they may opt to incorporate colour in their sash or ribbon. The choice of colour can be very personal or it may be a colour that coordinates

with wedding colours. Elle Couture Designs added to her collection with a wedding dress made of Silk Tissue Taffeta, detailed with Alencon Lace that is embellished with Swarovski crystals. A Black Satin ribbon was used to add a striking touch of drama and sophistication. ORGANZA AND TULLE — Dresses made of Organza or Tulle are light and airy and a perfect choice for weddings taking place in the warmer months. Many designers are using multiple layers to create volume and creating ruffles from these fabrics. Marchesa utilizes layering of long ruffles that resemble the petals on a flower. The Mermaid silhouette continues to be popular. While this style is not suited for every woman, the lucky ones will no doubt exude a sense of sensuality and femininity. Pronovias Barcelona is a designer that consistently creates elegant, feminine wedding dresses that are stylish and modern with a sense of romance.

MADRID NOVIAS INTERNATIONAL BRIDAL FASHION EXHIBITION Date: 5 MAY 2011 to 8 MAY 2011 Wedding fashion, party-wear and First Communion attire will once again make up the exhibition at MADRID NOVIAS, the International Bridal Fashion Exhibition. As is customary, MADRID NOVIAS will bring together a number of great names and brands from the current world of Spanish fashion in both its trade area and in the fashion show known as CIBELES MADRID NOVIAS

ASYMMETRICAL NECKLINES — For women who like one-shoulder dresses, Designers are continuing to include this style in their Spring collections. This style show off the shoulders and neck while the design also provides comfort and is secure to wear throughout the wedding festivities. The design is modern, chic and sophisticated. Carolina Herrera showcased gowns with the asymmetrical neckline that draw attention to the neck, shoulders and upper back, and are ideal for a variety of wedding styles and settings. Princess (A-Line) — The traditional silhouette of the Princess (also called an A-Line) gown continues to be the most popular style. Women of varying shapes and sizes can easily wear this gown and is suited for all types of weddings. Christos gowns combine the layering of Tulle to create a soft silhouette and emphasizes the natural waistline. Just as fashion is always changing to keep up with today’s modern woman, the wedding industry will also continue to evolve and change to represent today’s modern bride. The most important thing to keep in mind is to choose the gown you love and one that suits your body type. You want to exude confidence and be radiant on your wedding day, which can be achieved by staying true to your personality, style and taste and not letting a “trend” dictate your choice in a gown.

• Beauty products, such as perfume or hair spray can discolour gold and silver or make pearls yellow. Put jewellery on after using cosmetic products. • Take off your jewellery when doing household chores or gardening. They could be damaged by knocking out stones or coming in to contact with household chemicals, which discolour metals. Swimming in chlorinated water also damages and discolour metals. • Jewellery settings can clog up with soap and hand cream. Take jewellery off before washing your hands and using cream. • Don’t wear too many chains at one time, they will tangle and rub off one another causing damage. • Keep jewellery away from strong-smelling foods, e.g. fish and onions can tarnish gold and silver. • Wear jewellery as much as possible, as this keeps the metals bright.

• Clean your jewellery periodically. In general, all that’s needed to clean jewellery is warm, soapy water and a very soft-bristled toothbrush. Remove your jewellery, soak in soapy water for 20 minutes, and then gently brush it and rinse thoroughly. Alternatively, purchase professional cleaning fluid from your jeweller. Flower Power

Of all Spring/Summer 2011 fashion trends floral prints are the most romantic and delicate. Designers definitely want us to look more feminine this season. As Coco Chanel once said “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” Floral print trends come and go but feminine style can almost never exist without florals.

“IWC” Clinic and SimpleCare ONE OF THE FIRST IN ANDALUCIA TO OFFER NEW CRYOLIPOLYSIS. A REAL ALTERNATIVE TO LIPOSUCTION SimpleCare has announced a new partnership with International Wellness Clinics to open state-of-the-art medical clinics throughout Spain, giving SimpleCare members in-network access to IWC physicians and specialists. Our new IWC Medical Centre located in Calle Carlota Alessandra 41, Torremolinos will have its grand opening May 2011 and will be the first medical centre in all of Andalucia to offer “Cryolipolysis”, the centre comprises 260 meters providing a multi-speciality centre to cover the Malaga, Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Fuengirola area. Plastic surgery has been featured in the mainstream media more than ever before, increasing awareness among women and men in every generation of the techniques and procedures that can make them look good at any age. Although successful, liposuction does have some limitations, not the least of which is that it is a surgical procedure with surgical risks, including anaesthesia complications. As a result, people are always looking for new alternatives, especially affordable non-surgical alternatives, to improve or replace liposuction. One of the most recent of these is Cryolipolysis.

IS CRYOLIPOLYSIS RIGHT FOR ME? 4 Are you within 10 to 15 pounds of your ideal body weight? 4 Do you have noticeable bulges or bumps that you would like reduced? 4 Do you want subtle, natural looking results? 4 Do you want a procedure with little to no pain or discomfort? 4 Do you need a procedure with no downtime? 4 Do you prefer a natural process over drugs, chemicals, or surgery?

R.B. PRATS., Medical Director of SimpleCare It is very exciting to be part of such a revolutionary new process and we are proud that the “IWC” Medical Centre is one of the first places on the Costa del Sol to offer this procedure for today’s patients looking to eliminate unwanted fatty bulges without surgery, pills, exercise equipment, or sweat. Cryolipolysis is a new affordable, non-invasive fat reduction procedure that gently and effectively reduces fat in targeted areas of your body, resulting in noticeable, natural-looking body contouring in the treated areas. The cryolipolysis involves placing a flat, saucer-shaped, suction-cup device (approximately 3-4cm wide) on the area of treatment. The device cools rapidly and is held on the area between 5-20 minutes. This method affects, or “freezes”, the subcutaneous layers of fat tissue without disturbing the norThis non-invasive fat removal procedure is best suited for eliminating thick fat build up in small areas, mal temperature of the epidermis. In animal studies, such as potbellies, love handles and back rolls. Your body is beautifully reshaped without damaging fat breakdown has been shown to occur at -1 degree the nerves, blood vessels and bones present in the treatment area. It is non-invasive, pain-free. Celsius (approximately 31 degrees Fahrenheit). Since treatment areas need to reach cold enough temps in increments, one session can last up to one hour, with No needles, no incisions, no anaesthesia, cryolipolysis works by using precisely controlled, targeted additional sessions needed on a case-by-case basis. cold therapy in a treatment that lasts about one hour per treatment area. The skin to be treated is suctioned between two cooling plates which take the fat to just above freezing. The cold extracts energy from fat causing it to die. Though it is referred to as cryolipolysis, it is not actually “freezing” the fat or the surrounding tissues. Rather, it crystallizes the lipids in fat cells causing the slow collapse of cells as they die. The procedure is biologically selective meaning that it only targets fat cells and only those in the superficial fat layer close to the skin. The body then carries off the dead freezedried fat cells over the course of two to three months so that the result is seen more gradually. Another benefit is the feeling of being trimmer, fitter, and sexier.

The Solution to Snoring is Here ESTABLISHED MARBELLA-BASED DENTIST PIONEERING A SIMPLE DENTAL DEVICE TO STOP SNORING Dr. Paul Arts and his team are stepping into 2011 with an innovative and proven solution to help people stop snoring, one of the most persistent problems not only for the sufferer, but often their partner and family too. An estimated 60 per cent of men and 40 per cent of women snore. While snorers are frequently at the butt of jokes and teasing, unfortunately, it is no laughing matter. Snoring not only damages relationships, but the health risks associated with sleep deprivation or sleep apnea (a potentially dangerous condition when we stop breathing for many seconds) can be considerable, bringing on everything from fatigue, sleepiness at the wheel, depression, headaches, heart-disease and strokes. WHY DO WE SNORE? Snoring is caused by a simple physiological state. When we are asleep, and our muscles relax, the base of the tongue falls backwards, narrowing the air canal, restricting our breathing and leading us to snore. Other lifestyle factors such as smoking and obesity also contribute to the causes of snoring. The solutions to snoring until now have been dramatic, costly and not always that efficient: Either surgery to remove an excess of skin at the back of the throat and tonsils – a costly and painful process which does not always work. Pressurized air masks (CPAP) are also prescribed to snorers – but there are 3 drawbacks: 1, discomfort, making it difficult to fall asleep, 2, the mask can be noisy and 3, it can slip, resulting in air escaping. THE SOLUTION - THE MANDIBULAR REPOSITIONING APPLIANCE Thankfully, there is a simple, effective, painless and cost effective solution now available at the Paul Arts Dental Clinic. The mandibular repositioning appliance (MRA) fits closely to the teeth and moves your lower jaw forward to about 60 per cent of its maximum. This process opens the air passageway during sleep, and all but the most persistent snoring is cured. Dr. Paul Arts is pioneering this treatment on the Costa del Sol, and to ascertain whether the patient has a snoring or sleep apnea problem, Dr. Arts clinic will give you a sleep testing device to take home for one night. The results are then reviewed on screen, and Dr. Arts will decide which therapy is recommended. From there, it is a simple process to take dental impressions, and a register of your forward bite, and to deliver your personalized mandibular repositioning appliance. Dr. Art’s Clinic works with 3 different devices varying in levels of comfort and price. For further information on treatment protocol, a sleepiness test and pricing, please check the comprehensive information on www.stopsnoring.es. Dr. Paul Arts is a member of the Spanish Society of Dental Sleep Medicine (SEMODS). For an appointment please call Clínica Dental Paul Arts, Centro Romano, Nueva Andalucia, Marbella on Tel: 95281 7110.

Solar roof tiles A SIMPLE WAY OF CAPTURING THE SUN’S ENERGY Alternative energy is known to be a lot of things – cutting edge, eco-friendly and forward thinking – but sadly curb side appeal isn’t one of them. SolTech Energy Meditterráneo is changing all that with its simple but effective way of producing solar energy via a glimmering reinforced-glass roof tile. This revolutionary patented product, Techo Solar®, was recently awarded “Hottest New Material 2010”. How does the solar roofing system work? The concept is simply to replace traditional roof tiles with Techo Solar® to collect solar energy. The Swedish designed system works by heating up air trapped beneath a set of transparent reinforced glass tiles. A base layer of high absorption solar material stores the energy from the sun and transmits it to the air, which in turn

Numerous homes on the Coast encounter humidity and dampness problems. Resulting in a lower property evaluation, health problems and odours. The correct waterproofing in your home is something so indispensable and in most cases we take it for granted that it was part of the build. In some cases, developers or contractors do not address this problem due to additional costs and an increase in the time frame for construction. In addition, humidity and dampness can surface several years after completion and full contractors payment, so complaints are ignored. To prevent future problems of humidity and dampness in your home, ensure that you contract a company with the necessary professional experience, required training and skills. The additional cost can only add value to your long-term investment. VIP Homes offers different types of waterproofing and certifies a written 10 year guarantee. The idea is to use existing heating systems as simple support systems to the Techo Solar(R), therefore making real and significant savings on energy bills. In addition to the pleasant thought of heavily reduced energy bills, the elegant tiles of the Techo Solar® system integrate seamlessly with any type of existing roof system. Which is useful for those who only have homes with partial sunlight. You can tile the portions of your roof that receive the most, and leave the rest in terra cotta. Techo Solar® offers aesthetic multi-functionality. Besides being used as a normal roof tile, it can also be used to cover garage spaces, club houses, swimming pools, sports courts and even open terraces.
