New Lifestyle Event Coming to the Coast in May A new family lifestyle event is coming to the Coast this May. Called Living On the Coast, it is being launched by the organisers of the highly successful Over 50s Show and will take place at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Estepona (Estepona Conference and Exhibition Centre). The event will, according to the organisers, feature an attractive mix of displays, presentations and demonstrations all aimed at the widest possible audience, and will include cooking demonstrations from top chefs, fashions shows, garden equipment, clinics and advice, room sets, wine tasting and appreciation, a ‘kidszone’ featuring games and attractions, ‘affordable’ cars and boats, an extensive art exhibition, finance advice, home entertainment equipment, fitness and yoga demonstrations ‘and much, much, more’. Another feature of the event will major on energy-efficient and environmentally friendly products and systems for the home. DECKING
A great solution for levelling a sloping site without having to do any major groundwork, decking can be used to create a platform with steps and balustrades, or simply a seamless link from the inside to out with a patio at the back of your home. Naturally weather-proof hardwood decking such as oak or cedar needs little treatment, but softer woods need protecting and sealing regularly. Choose rough-sawn or textured finishes for a non-slip surface and be aware that natural decking can become slippery when wet. Or try a composite material such as TimberTech, which is a low-maintenance and safe option that looks like wood. If you go for a real wood and want to stain or protect the deck, there’s a great selection of waxes, stains and treatments from Cuprinol, some of which are available with spray or roller applicators for quick results. To keep natural wood decking looking its best for longer, you will need to fix the decking to a frame or raft to keep the planks clear of the ground; you will also need to make sure the site is free draining, otherwise the timbers will rot. The good news is you can fit a deck over existing patios, but if you’re fitting it over a lawn it’s worth installing a weed suppressing membrane beneath the deck to stop any unsightly weeds shooting through the cracks once the deck is in place.

Although this may be the traditional choice for outdoor living spaces, you don’t have to be traditional in your choice of design or materials. These can range from rough-hewn granite setts to modem polished sandstone. Or go one step further and choose an inside/outside surface such as natural slate and run it from your indoor living space to the patio, combined with a wall of sliding doors for a seamless transition into the garden. Natural stone is the ultimate choice for patios, with the inevitable variations in colour and texture giving a unique look. Alternatively, consider the stone-effect concrete slabs or reconstructed stone for a more affordable option . Before you start fixing paving in place, layout the slabs to see if you’re happy with the size of the patio area and the arrangement of the blocks. This is especially useful when working with differentsized slabs that need to be laid in a random pattern, leaving you free to make any changes before they’re fixed. When you come to lay it, you will need to prepare the ground with a good layer of sharp sand but for a more stable surface it’s worth using a cement-based foundation instead.

Many groundbreaking discoveries came about by chance! In 1928, bacteriologist Alexander Fleming found a mould had contaminated one of his experiments. To his surprise, the mould turned out to be an antibacterial agent...and so, penicillin was born. Another remarkable creation is the multifaceted and challenging media of glass. By melting combinations of soda and sand, our ancestors found, upon letting the mixture cool, that its composition had changed into a transparent ‘glassy’ mass. Trial-and-error resulted in one of the largest industries to date. The creation of glass continually evolved with additions of limestone, lead oxide and boric acid. Metals like cobalt, copper, manganese, gold and silver would change the consistency, clarity, colour weight and strength of glass. The Venetians were the first to become world leaders in the manufacture of glass. The Crusades and the

The result was an exchange of cultures - which allowed the Venetians to adopt the practices of the glass producers in these once foreign lands.

MORE THAN CONQUERORS However, the Venetians were the ones that took the art of glassmaking to another level by adding minerals and pebbles to the glass silica. ‘Oxides’ were also added to the silica, creating a splendid multi-coloured array of glassware. The Venetians also received accolades for perfecting clear glass known as “cristallo.” Nowhere was the art of glass more evident than on the islands of Murano. Murano is a group of islands lying on the edge of the Adriatic Sea in the lagoon of Venice, about 3,000 meters north of the larger group of islands comprising the city of Venice. This was the glass centre of the Venetian industry, and glassmakers had the same

status as “royalty,” and had privileges denied to ordinary citizens; but in exchange for such titles and privileges, the government virtually imprisoned them in an attempt to protect the secrets of the glass trade. If one of these artisans tried to leave the island to practice their craft elsewhere, they were condemned to death for committing treason. The Republic of Venice put this mandate into effect in order to isolate the master glassblowers, in order to keep control and monopolize the industry of glassmaking. There was a period in Venetian history when the glasshouses supposedly caught fire and the Venetian authorities moved all the glasshouses to the island of Murano. Whether the fires were rumour or fact; by moving all production to Murano, the Venetians not only protected Venice from the hazards of fire, but also insured government regulation and State protection, ensuring no competition from abroad. As a result, Murano glassmaking became the leading source for fine glass in Europe and a major source of trading income for the Republic of Venice. The glass pieces of this period were ornate and considered luxury items. Through this ostentation, a strain of utilitarian design developed and mirrors started to appear which provided a high revenue turnover. Artisans competed amongst themselves, constantly developing more complex and intricate glassmaking techniques and continually pushing the boundaries of thought, images, use, and opinion. Unlike any other material, glass envelopes the mystical qualities of colour, hue, and light. Old world artisans have introduced us to glass that delights our senses with endless colour schemes, light refractions, and artistic designs.

The world is chock full of beautiful fabrics in every colour of the rainbow and at every price. From chintz to silk to cotton knowing what and how to add the finishing touch will give your home a sense of style. The ideas and possibilities are endless, but to keep a room looking designer sleek there are a few rules to follow when it comes to mixing patterns. Take a good look at your home and the colours you’ve used. You’re palette may all ready be established and if it is you’ll move on to looking for fabrics within your chosen colour scheme. Using between two to four colours is a good place to start. Now you want to mix patterns such as stripes, polka dots, and florals, no problem, just follow the guidelines and you’re on your way to fabric creations that harmonize with the room. MIXING PATTERNS • For patterns to blend well with each other there must be a common thread. It can be colour, pattern, or theme, but colour is the easiest route to follow. As long as the colour palette remains the same you could mix patterns forever and they’d look great together. • You can use the same pattern but in different colour combinations. Keep in mind that the palette remains the same. An example: A pink and green print on a black background juxtaposed with the same print in pink and black on a green background. • Always using the same colour combination allows you to use the same pattern but this time in different sizes. This idea works especially well with polka dots, checks, and stripes. • Try using different patterns that are related through theme in the exact same colour scheme. A garden of floral fabrics in different flower shapes but all in the same colour. Another way to use this concept involves extremes. Choose a large pattern and a tiny one, again in the same colour combinations. • Yes, you can combine florals, plaids, checks, polka dots, and stripes as long as they are take advantage of the same colors.

Glass is not crystal, but crystal can be glass in one of its transformations. Crystal is another thing, simple and basic — sand, water and fire. Crystal can be transparent, volatile, bright, black and captivating. It can change shades as you walk by its side, but it can also be lethal. We all know that it is magic, a material I would define as captivating. Like good stories — impossible but real. Crystal is anything but simple, from infinity and beyond. A LITTLE HISTORY The history of this amazing material began with the Egyptians 4,000 years ago and the Romans also used it in various ways, mainly decorative, until the eighteenth century. But it was only 150 years ago that crystal became a more common versatile material, and applied to construction in a massive way. I truly believe that glass is the eye through which light enters into our homes and leaves in the evening for family dreams. For many it’s just part of a window, for some a dangerous handrail and for others, children’s worst enemy. Allow me to go a little further from the limits of what we all call “Crystal”.
Crystal is an inorganic material — hard, fragile, transparent and shapeless. In other words, indescribable. It is elegant, bright, captivating, mysterious, attractive, but not unbreakable, quite the opposite. You could say that, despite its long-standing origin, only now are we discovering the material’s constructive possibilities, as new technologies, and present and future applications make glass one of the most useful, magical and ecological materials we have in our reach. ARCHITECTURE AND GLASS, THE INFINITY It is important to say this material came before concrete or steel but its use in construction is very recent. There is no doubt that without this wonderful material architecture would not exist as we understand it today, and what lies ahead is yet to come: liquid glass, insulating glass, safety glass, cellular glass, float glass, laminated, reinforced glass, tempered glass and glass … function, expression, light and space. An obvious example of its spectacular and well-know use is the “curtain wall” (glass facades where the support method is based on anchoring to a metal substructure)

And for many years, glass has been combined with reception methods of sunlight in various shades, degrees and transparencies, as well as the environmentally friendly use of energy and solar radiation. In all projects known as “sustainable architecture” glass is the element by which, under a good policy guidance, light and heat essential for life is captured. Contemporary architects are aware of this and so much more such as: Jean Nouvel, Mies Van der Rohe, Richard Rogers, Herzog & de Meuron, Sanaa, Toyo Ito, Norman Foster and long ago Mr. Joseph Paxton, the creator of the stunning Crystal Palace, built in 1851 for London’s Great Exhibition. It’s impossible to include a list of all architects who have given and still continue to give a twist to the use of glass in construction and decoration, creating buildings and spaces impossible to imagine. GLASS AND MOTHER EARTH Marriage between steel and glass was a pivotal event for the building and construction history —nothing would ever be the same for today’s architecture. It’s a combination which make mankind have a dignified outlook on to the vast divine chaos of nature’s creative perfection. Glass doesn’t exist within nature, it’s been found thanks to Mother Earth. One of the most magical and innovative design options, which fortunately I have encountered and experienced in my work, has been the possibility of creating buildings constructed and designed with glass. It is a material that, amongst other things, reflects the surrounding environment, looking and allowing to gaze, tinting glass curtains into a thousand colour glass shades, forming Babel towers of light, often turning the building into an open book in which the city looks upon itself. In my experience, as an architect in different countries and with various multidisciplinary teams, I’ve had the luck of being involved in project designs, where after much thought on different materials, glass was needed for landscape blending and environmental respect, expiration and inspiration of peaceful light, strength and character in its brightness, use and function as a material, metaphor and resource of the site, energy and generation control and even artistic expression. I fondly remember the creative task we planned trying to reflect the Caribbean’s immense brightness on to the tower’s facades. All this often happens in combination. A wonderful challenge. Glass a man made material with nature’s inspiration. GLASS AS A CONSTANT CHALLENGE Today, the use of glass in architecture is a fantastic challenge which has yet to be deeply investigated, particularly in a world where the techno-

logical future only lasts a few months. Contemporary architecture implementing the technological advances in glass can be found in the four towers which form Madrid’s new skyline, Barcelona’s Agbar Tower, the British Museum’s great courtyard, the Gherkin tower in London, the Kursaal in San Sebastian, and of course, currently the world’s tallest building, at 828 metres in height, the Burj Dubai, which deliberately didn’t disclose its final height to the world until just a few days before its opening. No doubt, a good way to create publicity, not that it needed any more than it had initially done, the Burj Dubai still astonished the world. Maybe, the next architectural dream would be to fulfill Frank Lloyd Wright’s dream of a one mile building (1,609 mts). Unfortunately despite being certain that his dream would one day become a reality in the futures he would not live to see it. Frank probably knew that the technology wouldn’t arrive for him in time, or perhaps to others, but he knew that glass would be the best partner for those who would ever dare to turn his dreams into reality. I sincerely hope that all this creative process never gets broken into a thousand pieces and still continues to be a worthy project according to mankind needs. Of course there are generations that cuss at the automation of simple domestic tasking, but we say to the rest of you, ‘techno notice’. These unfortunate few are frozen in time, languishing in a hessian-clad era where setting the VCR was left to the resident three-year-old. That very same threeyear-old is probably notching-up thirty now, conveying through the decades an early nurtured technological addiction and harbouring a deep-set ravenous hunger for push-button convenience. It’s simply in the blood now, a genetic expectancy to shuffle through a mountain of remotes on the coffee table before settling down to the latest Divx version of “It’s a Wonderful Life”; digitally re-mastered and beamed over the wifi super-highway from your state-of-the-art PC to your 50inch LCD surround-sound home cinema system. You know who you are … However, did you close the curtains manually or set the mood ambience via an archaic dimmerswitch system before weeping uncontrollably at George Bailey’s self inflicted non-dead deportment? Bet you did; and even that pile of remotes in the fruit bowl doesn’t translate to true home automation. Sadly, unless your HiFi talks to your tumble dryer through the wifi, or in other words, unless your house has a living breathing working ‘microchip’ soul, intelligently interconnecting every electrical gadget under your roof, I’m afraid you really are lumbering in the twentieth century.

Home automation has been with us for decades, earlier versions relying on bulky sonic or infra-red overtones, an abracadabra clap for the curtains — one for open, two for close and hey presto — as 007 as it might sound, it never really caught on; cheese factor and cost being the major stumbling blocks. SO WHAT IS A SMART HOME? It’s basically what it says on the tin - smart - a thinking home, a computer-integrated home system that knows when you are home and knows what you need - and considering you had the decency to build it – should pander to your every whim. And what with the recent surge in mobile phone functionality, your personal GPS coordinates can set off sequence of heart-warming electronic home greetings; from simple entrance lighting to a whole conduit of home-coming faultlessness including warmth, practicality, comfort and of course entertainment. As a by-product, all this automated functional switch-boarding is incredibly energy saving if you consider man’s general laxity when it comes to operating heating timers and leaving lights on. A required task is activated according to occupant movement and general ambient requirement. Trust us, surging energy bills will stabilise, or if not, show a considerable drop-off. Your carrot-cake munching green idealists, while frowning at all the luxury, won’t be able to deny the impressive sustainability of such a smart solution.
HOW DOES IT SIT? You’d think with all the expense involved - and with the impressive nature of an integrated Domotic environment - owners would want all that computer-synchronised gadgetry on bold display, but vulgarity just doesn’t seem to fit the bill. Much better a clandestine electronic underbelly, humming away behind false reveals and hollow ceilings. A minimalist playground of hidden luxuries, pre-programmed for the most, with manual override provided by one central hand-held remote – leaving the fruit bowl free for... apples and stuff. Designers agree, and as intelligent systems forge further into futurism (a statement only effectively accentuated by using three f’s together in that way) then so do the latest designs resemble what only George Lucas could have dreamed about a few decades ago. Jean Nouvelle’s post-modernist take on the Domotic environment and how it should operate is a perfect example, his touch sensitive light-shape control panels offering a stunning dynamic, and a unique control language light years ahead of anything else we’ve seen, save a Millennium Falcon or two. In the end. The outcome of this domestic technological revolution is more than just convenience. However, we’ve mentioned the importance of energy saving and how that fits in with the modern energy crisis, but there is another element of essentiality. In this modern world, with ups and downs, credit crunches and the surging costof-living, the modern household is predominantly vacant. More family members have to work, and those members need to spend longer at work to bring home the beans. Consequently, quality time at home becomes a precious commodity, and the integration of essential subsystems lends itself well to affording security, safety and comfort in such a situation. With that little electronic heart pumping away at home scanning for burglars, regulating heat, checking for fires, doing the laundry, preparing a movie, answering calls, feeding the dog, cleaning the pool and just generally doing what we’d all do if we had time (only in the most efficient manner), you know that your few hours at home each night will be good ones. And even though at the back of your mind you’ll feel that you are never truly alone, your silent-running electronic cocoon will consistently welcome you home with open arms, ready for undying and unequalled service… At least that is, until it spits you out the door next morning - lavishly refreshed and ready for work – after all, someone has to pay for all this automated opulence.

Be realistic about what you plant. Just because, it’s in the garden centre does not mean that it will like the hot summer winds or the cold ones of next winter. In the short term, beware. Phase your planting both along the coastal plain and inland valleys. Recognise that initially the microclimate in city blocks will be a degree or two above front line exposed apartments, and they above inland situations. Things equal out during the summer, but now, plants need to get off to a good start before the hot summer months. In exposed situations, and on north facing slopes and terraces be aware of the impact cold winds can have in your garden. If the soil is moist from recent rains, now is an opportune time to plant fruit trees, flowering trees, shrubs and perennials. Also, summer bulbs if you spot any still for sale. If you are likely to be faced with water shortages, or last years summer water bill was high, plant more drought resisting succulents and perennial herbs, which
even keep coastal hills green in the summer. There is a wide variety to choose from as illustrated in the plant tables of our book Your Garden in Spain – Planning, planting and maintenance. Plant trees for shade in future summers and internal and external hedges to improve the microclimate for the more tender plants. Even on the Southern Costas it is essential to develop a benign local microclimate before planting subtropical and tropical plants. The average temperatures published by tourist boards and estate agents are indeed the best in the world, for persons and plants alike, but it is the extremes – highest and lowest – that gardeners need to be aware of. The location, degree of wind and shade protection are factors that need to be considered for earlier planting. When escaping to the shade or air conditioned room, flowers and leaves of plants may rise to seventy or more degrees, even though the ther-
mometer shows temperatures in the forties. Most do not need sun all day long so plan the garden so that there are semi and dapple shaded areas for planting.
HERBS ARE GREAT IN ALL LOCATIONS If you love cooking or have an interest in healthy living extend your collection of herbs. For those living in apartments and indeed others, included in our book Apartment Gardens Mediterranean Style is a list of herbs for small and large terraces and ten beneficial herbal infusions. Including, mint which aids digestion and helps seasonal hangovers, rosemary to boost sagging energy levels and memory, and stevia as a natural sweetener. BUY INTELLIGENTLY When purchasing annuals and subtropical/tropical shrubs, climbers and trees, find out where they came from and whether they have been hardened off. A plant raised by a local nursery often establishes itself more quickly than an imported forced hot house plant. The latter may be varieties of native or naturalised plants. If they are first grown in unnatural, forced conditions, they have not been naturalised until they have been hardened off, planted and nurtured successfully through several winters and summers in your Spanish garden!
RECOGNISE WHY NEW PLANTS DIE The five most common reasons that plants die young or fail to mature quickly are as follows. 1. Plants purchased have poor underdeveloped root balls. 2. Plants are planted in small, narrow, shallow holes, in unprepared soil. The roots struggle to expand sideways and downwards out of the planting hole especially in heavy clay soils. Shallow rooted plants do not survive the hot gales from North Africa, even if watered every day, and are not sheltered by drought resisting taller plants planted down wind. 3. Purchase plants when fully in bloom and even in the case of citrus trees with fruit already on the trees. The first priority, in Spanish gardens, is to encourage deep root growth. 4. Over watering so that roots don’t go down and the first time you leave them especially as absentee gardeners they suffer. For instant lantanas will not survive their first two years without regular watering but within three or four years, their tap roots can extend vertically down for a more than a metre searching for water. 5. Even in deep soil roots can tangle together and strangle themselves resulting in stunted shrubs and trees which under perform and die. If planting areas are not loosened around and below where the plant is to be planted, and the plant roots are not spread out when planting, it can cause poor performing citrus trees. This is illustrated in our book Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain.
FOR CONTINUOUS NATURAL GROWTH FEED THE SOIL AND NOT THE PLANTS. Improving soils and composts always pays off. We recommend using ecological slow release dried manures, bags of worm compost or TerraCottem soil improver. The latter can reduce watering needs by 50%, which is invaluable in gardens and apartment containers. Hungry, as well as thirsty annuals in window boxes, will naturally benefit from top up feeds each month to keep them flowering but do not over do it. Fast compared to steady growing plants tend to be more susceptible to insect and fungal attacks and sun and wind burn.
RECOGNISE THAT MANY VEGETABLES CAN BE GROWN SUCCESSFULLY IN SMALL SPACEs Yes, even in the space of an A4 piece of paper! Starting this week you could have numerous varieties of sprouting seeds to add to spring salads. Miniature carrots and radishes germinate easily and grow well in 25 cm plastic pots in a semi shaded area on a terrace, as do tomatoes and peppers. For those living in apartments Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style explains how vegetables can be grown all year in a wide range of containers on terraces, balconies and windowsills. Covered terraces have an advantage over open gardens in that the containers can be given shade from the hottest suns by shading them with blinds or on roof tops with awnings. Last spring we came across a roof top, with an eating area in the middle, covered in a prize-winning collection of bonsai’s. Both humans and plants survived the July/August suns under a year round awning covering the entire roof top. Yes, they did have a small bore watering system that watered each shallow bonsai tray three times a day. It was a delightful low maintenance garden with marvellous mini shaped bougainvilleas and hibiscus amongst the spring flowering pomegranates, cherries and Judas trees. So take courage this Spring. Plant up creatively and make the garden and apartment terraces more colourful perfumed and productive as ever before but with lower risks.

Life can be very easy if we follow the law. We automatically do this in most cases, such as a driving licence, car insurance and respect for traffic rules. Violation of these rules can result in fine. We also pay our taxes in order to avoid problems with the tax authorities, and so on. So why not respect the legal rules and regulations when we make home improvements? Obtaining permission to build, make structural changes or improvements to our homes is an important process in Europe. So why should Spain be any different? On the Costa del Sol, the same rules apply like in our neighbouring European countries. Any changes made to our homes requires building permission and permits from the local Town Hall. Unfortunately, in Spain, this has not always been the case. There is a perception from home owners and builders that it is considered unnecessary and not always valued. Think again! On the spot inspections can be made, neighbours can complain, or an anonymous phone call can be made to the authorities. This can be enough to create an unpleasant and complicated legal situation. Transparency combined with technical and legal advice throughout home improvement stages is highly recommended. In order to obtain the correct advice, approach a contractor that provides more than just construction, such as a professional building consultant. Architects and building companies that supply additional services in-house are highly recommended. They should offer added value: an all-inclusive package (technical, legal, construction), tailor-made solutions, professional presentations incorporating 3D imaging, stage reporting throughout construction work and a
multilingual workforce. An all-inclusive package simplifies the coordination of your project and communicating with one contact person makes life easier for you. There is a small cost for this service, but it far outweighs a hefty fine from the Ayuntamiento, a result of not having the required paperwork from the Town Hall. Generally, the Town Hall requires the following in order to issue building permits: Project information such as total surface, location, detailed description and quotations for the work. In addition, architectural drawings of the planned project and new layout are requested. If the improvements are for a commercial premise, further information may also be requested with regard to sanitary facilities, noise adaptations, terrace occupation, amongst others. The approach of many builders is to offer their own “multitalented personnel” without using specialised craftsmen. Other companies only offer specialised personnel for a specific need and offer the best team and equipment for that need. Some workers lack professionalism, training, or qualifications. Specialised companies have very targeted duties offering a guaranteed job. Using unprofessional contractors on the Costa del Sol have resulted in many problematic construction issues, including humidity and homes that are not fully legalised. Fully complying with building regulations on the Costa del Sol will ensure that you will not run into problems down the road, face a complicated legal situation, or in extreme cases have the work carried out demolished by the Ayuntamiento.

ke and o h c i t r A Hot Dip Spinach Try this hot, flavourful dip with toasted bread or tortilla chips. This dip is amazing — so cheesy and fragrant. If you don’t like artichokes, don’t worry — you’ll never know they’re in there! The only question is: “Is it okay to just eat it with a spoon right out of the dish?” Ingredients 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup sour cream or mayonnaise 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup grated Romano cheese 1 clove garlic, peeled and minced 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt salt and pepper to taste 1 (14 ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped 1/2 cup frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Method 1. Preheat oven to 175 degrees oC. Lightly grease a small baking dish. 2. In a medium bowl, mix together cream cheese, mayonnaise, Parmesan cheese, Romano cheese, garlic, basil, garlic salt, salt and pepper. Gently stir in artichoke hearts and spinach. 3. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Top with mozzarella cheese. Bake in the preheated oven 25 minutes, until bubbly and lightly browned.

Waitrose’s version of the classic Scottish dessert, made with strawberries, caramelised oatmeal and yogurt. Ingredients 600g strawberries, hulled and quartered 50ml Védrenne Supercassis liqueur 25g caster sugar 50g of “Alford” Medium Oatmeal 50g light brown soft sugar 500g pot Waitrose Natural Wholemilk Bio Yogurt 4 small sprigs fresh mint, to decorate Method 1. Place the strawberries in a large bowl and gently stir in the liqueur and caster sugar. Leave for 10 minutes or so to allow the fruit to soften and absorb the flavour of the liqueur. 2. Meanwhile, place the oatmeal and brown sugar in a small heavy-based saucepan over a gentle heat and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring continuously until the sugar has dissolved and the oatmeal is golden and caramelised. Remove from the heat. Spread the oatmeal out on a plate to cool, breaking up any large clusters with a fork. 3. Just before you are ready to serve, fold the caramelised oatmeal gently into the yogurt. Assemble the dessert by spooning a layer of the strawberries and liqueur into the base of 4 small glasses. Top with a layer of the yogurt mixture. Repeat the layers, spooning any remaining liqueur over the top. Decorate each one with a sprig of mint and serve immediately. COOK’S TIPS: Make the dessert with desiccated coconut instead of oatmeal. Caramelise the oatmeal in advance, cool and then store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

Ingredients 250g softened butter 250g caster sugar 4 eggs, beaten 100g self-raising flour, sifted 100g shelled pistachio nuts, roughly chopped 200g ground almonds 250g Total 0% Fat Greek Yoghurt 400g California cherries, washed, pitted and halved, reserving a few whole cherries for decoration 1 tbsp icing sugar, sieved, to dust Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4. Lightly grease a deep 23cm-diameter cake tin and line the base with baking parchment. 2. Beat the butter and sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg, a little at a time, until it is fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth. If the mixture starts to curdle a little, simply add a spoonful or two of the flour and carry on adding the egg. 3. Fold in the flour, pistachios and ground almonds. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden and springy to the touch. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for 10-15 minutes. Turn the cake out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. 4. Cut the cake in half horizontally and spread the yoghurt over the base. Scatter over the halved, pitted cherries. Sandwich with the remaining half of cake. Dust the top with icing sugar and decorate with the reserved whole cherries. Cut into slices using a sharp knife. COOK’S TIPS: The unfilled cake will keep for 1-2 days in an airtight container. Once filled, eat within a day.

This colourful, warm salad combines asparagus, potatoes and peppers, and is topped with a soft poached egg. An ideal vegetarian supper. Serves: 4 Ingredients 500g baby new potatoes 2 tbsp olive oil 1/2 tsp (Bart) Picante Pimentón (smoked paprika) 2 packs bunched asparagus 1/2 x 350g jar (Gaea) Flame Roasted Red Peppers, drained and chopped 4 large eggs 4 tbsp Maille Hollandaise Sauce Method 1. Boil the new potatoes for 10-15 minutes until just tender, drain and allow to cool slightly. Cut into thick slices. Combine 1 tablespoon of the oil with the paprika and add to the sliced potatoes. Toss gently to coat. 2. Remove any woody stems from the asparagus by bending the bases. They will snap at the point where the woody part begins. Heat the remaining oil in a griddle or frying pan then add the spears in a single layer. Cook for 5-6 minutes, turning once, until lightly charred and tender (you may need to do this in 2 batches). Transfer to a bowl and keep the spears warm. 3. Add the potato slices to the pan and griddle for 2 minutes on each side until lightly charred. Place in the bowl with the asparagus. Add the peppers to the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes to heat through. Tip into the bowl with the asparagus and potatoes and toss together gently. 4. Pour boiling water into a clean frying pan and return to the boil. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer, then crack 2 eggs at a time into the water and poach until the white is cooked through. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. 5. Divide the asparagus salad between 4 plates. Top each with an egg and a tablespoon of Hollandaise sauce. Serve with slices of lightly toasted bread.

Artichokes, a Delicious Thistle
In the 16th century, eating an artichoke was reserved only for men. Women were denied the pleasure because the artichoke was considered an aphrodisiac and was thought to enhance sexual power. Spain is the largest producer of artichokes, growing about 30% of the world’s supply and is the major exporter. Shopping and Preparing Artichokes When shopping for artichokes, choose the ones that are heaviest and whose leaves are closed or compact. The colour should be green with few brown spots or blemishes. If an artichoke’s leaves are opened, it is not fresh and is beginning to dry out. To store fresh artichokes at home, sprinkle them with a little water and refrigerate in an airtight plastic bag. Do no wash before storing. They should last a week when stored properly. When preparing artichokes, it is important to trim the stem, remove the tough outer leaves and trim the ends of the leaves. Since the cut edges turn brown quickly, rub edges with half of a fresh lemon to prevent discolouration. 6,000 Euros Raised for Cudeca The Annual Cudeca Cup fund-raising golf competition held on Campo Asia, La Cala Resort raised almost 6,000 euro for the organisation which provides palliative care, free of charge, to patients suffering from advanced cancer. (Over 115,000 euro has been raised by this tournament since the event began in 1994.) The overall winner of this Stableford competition was resort resident and past club captain, James Reid with 38 points. After a long judging session the judges chose nine to make up a shortlist, all of which would make effective adverts.
