Welcome to Agritech Expo 2014 and Zambia. Agritech Expo is a Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) and Golden Valley Agricultural Research Trust (GART) jointly conceived agricultural technology and agribusiness exhibition initiative aimed at introducing for the first time in Zambia, a world class agricultural technologies and agribusiness innovations exhibition forum, designed to create an information and knowledge market that will help drive technology adoption in the growing and rising Zambian agriculture. Agritech Expo 2014 is a platform that draws together manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and other service providers of leading ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ agricultural technologies and solutions, and allows them to show-case these technologies and interface with local, regional and international agricultural practitioners, development agents, policy makers, researchers and other key stakeholders. Agritech Expo 2014 also provides an open forum where Zambian, regional and continental agricultural development and investment opportunities will be discussed in depth.

Agritech Expo 2014 comes at a time when Zambian agriculture is on the rise. Gearing up and taking its pole position in the regional and continental agricultural development. A time when Zambian agriculture and the Zambian farmer is looking for appropriate technologies and solutions needed for improved agricultural productivity, sustainable natural resource management and enhanced farming profitability. With our copious natural resource endowments, supportive investment climate, political maturity and enduring peace, Zambia today stands out among the top 3 most preferred African agricultural investment destinations. It is as a result of this that Agritech Expo was conceived and is now born; to provide a platform and forum that will actuate the harnessing of current technology innovations and advances needed to revolutionise Zambian agriculture at all levels. Agritech Expo 2014 is thus the right opportunity for you to sample technologies/ solutions and investment opportunities Zambian agriculture currently offers.

LIVE CROP TRIALS
One of the greatest challenges facing farmers across Africa is maximising the potential of their arable land by increasing crop yields. Average crop yields across Zambia are 1.5-2 metric tonnes per hectare where there is genetic potential to achieve 8-10 metric tonnes per hectare in some maize varieties. Agritech crop trials will give you a first-hand opportunity to see the effects and benefits of fertilisers and pesticides produced by exhibitors including BASF, SeedCo, Zamseed, Klein Karoo, NWK, Monsanto and DuPont.

FREE technical workshop programme SPONSORED BY The Southern Africa Trade Hub is part of the US government’s Feed the Future Strategy, and our focus is both on the competitiveness of regional agriculture and on food security. As part of Feed the Future, the US government is focusing support on Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. In all three of these countries, small holder farmers make up the majority of staple food production, but they all suffer from very low productivity. Our grant agreement with Agritech Expo covers four primary areas. One of them is a subsidy for emerging commercial farmers in the region to attend the show. Why we think it is important for them to attend the show, is that one of the contributors to low productivity is the lack of adoption of new agricultural technology. This includes improved seeds, fertilisers and mechanisation, and the Agritech Expo represents a sustainable, commercial mechanism to allow farmers access to these technologies. The second area is the funding of buyer-seller support. It is important to mention that we are only partially subsidising the farmers that are attending Agritech Expo. Eligible farmers must provide for their own transportation to get to the show and then we provide accommodation as well as buyer-seller linkages. The third area is vendor support. We are providing subsidies for smaller, regional companies which would otherwise find it difficult to afford to exhibit at the show. We want to use the show to increase access to farmers but also market access for smaller suppliers, especially those that are targeting small holders and emerging commercial farmers. The fourth area is the workshops. We are supporting a series of technical seminars to prepare these attendees to better understand and benefit from the technologies that they are exposed to at the show. We want to make sure that farmers and companies can benefit on a very practical level, that they have the ability to act on this, to purchase what they find and to put it into practice.

USAID’s hosted visitor programme One of the primary objectives of USAID Southern Africa Trade Hub is to increase international competitiveness, intra-regional trade and food security in Southern Africa. In order to achieve this, Feed the Future agencies work hand-in-hand with partner countries (like Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique) to develop their agriculture sectors and break the vicious cycle of poverty and hunger. Small holder farmers make up the majority of food production in Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique, but they all suffer from low productivity – usually due to poor irrigation, post-harvest losses, and the use of poor seeds and technologies. With this in mind, the ‘hosted visitor’ grant aims to expose emerging commercial farmers to new agricultural technologies and techniques that could dramatically improve their output through access to the wide range of exhibitors and workshops at the Agritech Expo 2014. After going through many applications over the past two months, the final group of farmers has been selected. All of them are excited about this wonderful opportunity and can’t wait to see everything on offer at the expo. We are confident that not only will the ‘hosted visitors’ benefit from this experience, but those in their surrounding communities too… new skills and ideas acquired from Agritech Expo will certainly be shared back home.
