Blog Post #10 The ABC’s of BPA-Free and Other Safe Materials: We’re all quite careful about the food we put in to our bodies, but do we ever stop and think about the containers that hold them? How does the material of your plastic containers attribute to the health, or lack thereof, of the food you eat? It can be quite frustrating to learn that the products we are using to cook, bake, and store food with may actually be detrimental to our families’ health. Unsafe Materials such as BPA, lead, and aluminum are, unfortunately, commonly found in everyday kitchenware products. What most people don’t realize is that there’s no need to settle for these items! In fact, there are numerous safer alternatives that are healthy for both you and your family. We’re here to explain to you the ABC’s of food-safe materials. A. BPA-FREE Probably one of the most common materials we use on a daily basis is plastic. We use plastic bags, plates, cups, trays, containers and more! But be aware! Some hard plastics can contain BPA, which is a developmental, neural, and reproductive toxin. Scientists have linked very low doses of BPA exposure to cancers and other illnesses. Therefore, before purchasing your next plastic container, bowl, or just about any other item, make sure to check for a “BPA-Free” label. In regard to food storage specifically, use safer materials including glass, stainless steel, and food-grade silicone. Each these materials do not leak chemicals into your food.
