O
Owner & Principal Designer Wendy Berry of W Design Interiors fearlessly embraces the art of experimentation within her own personal design. Collaborating with Builder Chad Smith, Berry draws global inspiration from her love of art and travel to design a “unique spin” on the standard floor plan for her residence at Kalea Bay. Transforming the front entry, Berry creates a foyer that offers an experience upon arriving home. “You step out of the elevator, and at that moment, the foyer invites you to pause and savor the anticipation of what is around the corner,” shares Berry, whose entrance design is replete with Haitian art and influence as it guides you into the heart of the open living space. The captivating view of the Gulf draws the Berry family to this unit, yet the interior design exudes European elegance through Berry’s daring use of authentic Venetian plaster. Fortified construction secures this stunning limewashed plaster, and the positive response has been overwhelming — some have asked Berry to create the look in their homes! Distinct ceiling designs define each space, and bleached walnut clads the dining room ceiling endowing a pleasant atmosphere for relaxed mealtimes. u
Entry: Berry describes this Kalea Bay unit as one large rectangle, and she creates a dynamic foyer for it, starting with this harlequin floor pattern in European white oak using whitewash and Vienna finishes custom-made by Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring from Naples Flooring Company. A fan of artist Claude Dambreville, Berry showcases his works of art and brings in this braided lampakanay mirror from Baker Furniture, endowing natural textural elements.

homeanddesign.net
Kitchen (Previous Spread): By integrating the main kitchen with the pantry, Berry gains the flexibility to relocate certain appliances and introduces a higher BTU Wolf range. Bleached walnut and painted custom-made white cabinetry show off next to the stunning yet quiet look of the Calacatta Statuario marble. Careful not to over-design, she uses white accessories and fixtures like these Paul Ferrante pendants that add complexity with their texture and form. Living Room: Luminance and luxury radiate from the limewashed Venetian plaster ceiling. Berry chooses a mix of natural and bleached walnut on the built-in that cleverly conceals the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. AMS Sound & Vision has equipped the space with Crestron Horizon dimmers for lighting and shade control, Samsung Art TVs, and a user-friendly Sonos system.

57
Living Room: Berry carries the limewashed look to the walls, where she places this exquisite artwork by Jorge Santos Marcos. Pillows atop the inviting sectional pick up on the abstract pattern of the Tufenkian rug. The contemporary sectional and club chairs cozy up to the white cerused and hammered-silver coffee table from W Home Collection. Powder Room: The harlequin oak floor from the foyer flows into the powder room, where Berry chooses this exciting sinkless Gris de Savoi countertop. Enhancing the visual appeal of the textured limestone wall tile, two pendants from Kelly Wearstler cast a gentle glow on the exquisite pillowed dry stack chevron pattern tiling from Island Stone. Berry brings warm wood tones that harmonize with the chattered wood mirror and reclaimed fallen timbers from Hurricane Irma that are waxed to maintain a natural appearance. Primary Bedroom Entry: A sojourn to Cabo San Lucas inspires the textile from artist Cuchi that Berry uses to infuse bold colors and sculpture into the design. Through the natural walnut doors is a striking painting titled Good Luck by Marco Grassi — between the art and the textiles, colors subtly enhance each room. European white oak planks by Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring from Naples Flooring in ultra-wide varying widths usher in warm gold and gray tones amid the visual movement of the wood’s natural graining. 58

59
Primary Bedroom: The Gulf view takes center stage, but Berry’s design steals the show in this primary bedroom. Bleached walnut on the step pattern ceiling conceals the HVAC while it adds layers of dimension. Raw suede panels to the top elevate this focal wall, and it’s here Berry uses mirrors above the cantilevering nightstands to reflect the blue sky. Atop the wool carpet from Abbey Carpet & Floors, Berry brings in subtle patterning with the Holland & Sherry fabric on the custom bench.

Primary Bathroom: “There is no other bathroom like this in Kalea Bay,” shares Berry. “The entire bathroom is wood and marble.” The shower, door openings, and vanity are in beautiful Opal White marble slabs. The drawer fronts of the vanity are intricately carved from the same marble, creating unique pulls for opening the drawers. Polished nickel sconces from Visual Comfort perfectly accompany the other metallic finishes, while the Patterson Flynn rug in a Greek-key-inspired design instills subtle texture.
Her creativity shines in the kitchen as she elevates the standard layout into a spacious, unified open design by integrating the service kitchen and personalizing the entire area. “Cabinetry that touches the ceiling got stained, and everything countertop level and below are painted white,” Berry says. She adds her designer’s touch by staining the wood on the island, intentionally inverting the concept. An inviting elegance describes the furnishings and accessories in the living room, bearing warm neutrals and crisp white to complement the adjacent kitchen. The living room’s custom built-in wall unit is made possible after the wall is elongated and the special one-of-a-kind mementos are on display. She intersperses white textural elements for interest that do not overcomplicate the scheme, while art pieces in the design bring various saturated, muted, and lively colors. Infusing more than color into the design, a riveting portrait at the entrance of the primary suite welcomes Berry to her private space. Touches of blue throughout punctuate the neutral palette to establish a connection with the Florida sky. “The primary bedroom is rather monochromatic but full of textures!” Berry delights, capitalizing on the tactile nature of suede, chenille, and silky bedding. She uses her favorite Italian bedding in both the primary suite and guest beds, offering guests the same level of comfort and luxury that she enjoys. Jennifer Evans, the Owner and Publisher of Home & Design Magazine, is thrilled to showcase Berry’s exceptional work. Evans expresses her delight, saying, “It is a great honor for us to have been chosen as the platform to unveil the personal residence of Wendy Berry. We are excited to share this exclusive inside look with our readers and provide a glimpse into the world of a designer’s personal style.” Boundless in her creative process, Berry incorporates global influences into her designs that exude European elegance, beautifully complementing the Gulf. n

Guest Bedroom: This black, white, taupe, and gray guest room exudes a whimsical sophistication. The double queen room features headboards upholstered in this intricate fabric by Cole & Son, and true to form, Berry provides her guests with luxurious Italian bedding by Patrizia Anichini. “I did the white paneling with a black painted reveal that creates a graphic window pane effect on the wall,” explains Berry, who expresses these contrasting hues in a delicate harlequin pattern on the ceiling.
Guest Bathroom: For a hotel-spa experience, Berry selects this gray, cream, and slate Venetian pebble tile from Emser Tile, carrying it across the floor and into the clear glass enclosure shower. Large format concrete-look wall tiles offer a sleek sophistication to the design. The bleached walnut chattered-finish floating vanity features leather-strap pulls as a masculine touch — an accent that pairs well with the Dark Caviar paint from Benjamin Moore that adorns the door.

Guest Bathroom: “I design spaces to make guests feel like they are somewhere special,” beams Berry. Berry’s choice of honed limestone flooring creates a harmonious combination with the room’s textured and functional white elements. The limestone extends effortlessly into the shower area, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic. The vanity is adorned with Sky White Dolomite, featuring a practical towel shelf. Unique lantern-inspired light fixtures are a nautical touch for this Gulf-view home. Guest Bedroom: In this delightful guest suite, Berry tastefully incorporates a two-tone canopy bed from EJ Victor that complements the two-tone Chatham dresser from Century. Billowy drapery softens the room with its gentle shade of gray, while the muted-cinnamon hue on the throw pillows is warm and inviting. Berry builds subtle complexity into the design by using a Mark Alexander wallcovering on the headboard wall that shows off a zig-zag stitch patchwork appearance.

Outdoor Living: The indoor and outdoor dining banquettes harmonize in brilliant symmetry, offering maximum dining versatility. Promoting relaxation, Berry selects this expansive Tommy Bahama Furniture sectional in teak with plush upholstery adorned with toss pillows in monochromatic hues and geometric patterns. She delineates this lounge space with a Stark Carpet outdoor rug in Onyx and completes the area with a gray concrete & iron cocktail table from Four Hands. The view lures guests to the deck, but the chessboard encourages them to linger.

ENTERTAINING CONNECTIONS AN EXPANSIVE ENTERTAINMENT HOME AND COMFORTABLE CONTEMPORARY RETREAT IN NAPLES

F
From doorstep to dock, this contemporary tropical home is a respite for two — or can entertain one hundred guests comfortably! Interior Designer Lisa Ficarra, President of Ficarra Design Associates, joins Greg Brisson, President of BCB Homes, and Architect John Cooney, to fulfill the homeowner’s wishes for a livable and entertainment-friendly home. The exterior architecture looks sharp in a cool gray color scheme — yet genuine wood cladding, bronze accents, and an integrated landscape provide warmth and texture for a stylish balance. “The contemporary flair of this tropical West Indies style architecture is evident inside and out,” Cooney relates. This interior palette complements the exterior, inspiring the floating oak, glass, and metal staircase — one of this home’s prominent architectural features. Ficarra offers surprise and intrigue by selecting an inviting light oak that spans the whole main floor. The open floor plan incorporates a generous living room, club room, and outdoor living with a deck that extends the gathering spaces to the tip of the dock. Floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors on the rear of the home create a visual connection to the water’s edge. u
Front Elevation: Tropical West Indies elements meld with traditional styles and transitional clean lines, creating this contemporary coastal home in Naples, Florida. A standing seam metal shed roof held by corbels shelters this quaint balcony, hinting at a tropical influence. The lush landscape that softly outlines the home, the richness of the natural wood cladding, and dark bronze window frames and railings invite a pleasing balance against the soft gray limestone exterior.

With the homeowners’ entertaining spirits in mind, no doors close off this club room. Swivel barstools from Hickory Chair in a taupe and gray textured fabric cozy up to the curved bar wrapped in leather — these chairs correspond with the kitchen’s counter chairs, granting these homeowners maximum seating flexibility. The Cristallo countertop follows the bar’s curve and ascends the back wall for a compelling backdrop for the open dark walnut cabinets with glass shelves. 80

Staircase & Front Entrance: Across the main space is a Giuseppina European white oak floor from Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring, sourced from Naples Flooring Company. The floating oak staircase, built-in glass, and steel wine room are architectural masterpieces, while the lighter oak on the stairs is a designer touch. This staircase, with a glass and dark bronze railing, leads to the second floor and offers an up-close view of the stunning blown glass chandelier and the artwork in bold blues from Adams Galleries. homeanddesign.net

Ficarra fashions an original interior style for her clients. “The homeowners wanted a lot of natural textures,” adds Ficarra, who enriches each space with textural fabrics and earthy materials. “The color palette grew into a soothing tone-on-tone scheme full of lavish neutrals with accents in varying shades of blue to bring in the Gulf vibe.” The entertainment-style design invigorates the main spaces. In contrast, the private spaces are for rejuvenation and exude tranquil energy. “While the overall home was designed with entertainment as a priority, the primary suite is a sanctuary. It is masterfully integrated as a zone of privacy and relaxation within the home,” Brisson shares. The detailing in this primary bedroom has a unified appearance that ushers in that sense of calm. Ficarra brings in darker wood tones on just a couple of pieces in the primary spaces. Still, overall the rooms resound with quiet neutrals, soft blue accents, and a tropical backdrop with an expansive water view, completing this space’s Zen-like appeal. Ficarra made similar design decisions for all of the guest spaces. While intentionally subtle, she builds each guest space with textural elements and coastal colors to impart a peaceful aura. u

Kitchen & Dining Room: Transoms above this kitchen’s custom dark bronze hood illuminate the natural beauty of the intricate oak coffer ceiling that conceals the ventilation. The second island and hightop bar in the kitchen feature stunning brass and bronze pendants from The Urban Electric Co., which complement the bleached walnut tone of the wood used for the flat panel cabinets. To offset the wood tone, Ficarra chooses a light putty color for the cabinets along the wall, adding bronze accents. This kitchen has a brilliant balance of warm and cool tones, only matched by the brilliance of each detail. The back wall features a delicate mosaic, and Ficarra cleverly extends the countertop vertically above the cooktop for functionality and accentuation. The bespoke dining table from Old Biscayne Designs features a high gloss top and a lighter base — a combination by Ficarra, who pairs the table with upholstered chairs in a gray woven fabric.

The living room is adorned with tailored furnishings, highlighted by ocean-blue cushions and a mix of blues on the Lee Jofa rug. Two leather-wrapped and rattan chairs by McGuire from Baker Furniture provide an ideal vantage point for watching television and enjoying the stunning, dark-stained walnut fireplace surround. The living room is connected to the adjacent club room via open doorways, and the spacious sliding glass doors open up wide to welcome homeowners and guests to the outdoor living area. 84

Primary Bedroom: Ficarra carefully crafts a tranquil sanctuary with a serene and textural design in the private spaces, enriching it with soft blue hues on the bed pillows and a Design Center by STARK wool area rug. Saturated wood stain on the nightstands and bench echo the rich ambiance of the main living area to create a subtle continuity throughout the home. City Loft by Sherwin-Williams brings depth to the ceiling and contrasts against the white beam coffers for visual appeal.

Primary Bathroom: This gold Calacatta tile with a laser-cut inlay accent in polished white Thassos from Ruben Sorhegui Tile radiates luxury. At the same time, the vibrant, lush outdoor setting adds a natural element that complements the rich cross-cut oak cabinetry, creating a harmonious blend of luxury and nature. The polished nickel and glass chandelier from Visual Comfort above the Kallista soaking tub elevates the space to a spa-like retreat.
“While the overall home was designed with entertainment as a priority, the primary suite is a sanctuary. It is masterfully integrated as a zone of privacy and relaxation within the home,” Brisson shares. homeanddesign.net
87
While the West Indies influence on the front exterior is strong, the rear architectural concept is all about entertaining and the view. The outdoor living area transitions seamlessly to the pool and sunning chaises, past the integrated planters to the dock, incorporating exciting interest points — such as the pool’s infinity edge, cozy fire pit, and lush foliage — along the way. The architectural, design, and build teams worked seamlessly together to create this home to serve a crowd, make meaningful connections, and fulfill the client’s wishes for a livable home. n
Guest Bedroom: This guest space — mirroring the aesthetic of the primary bedroom — shows off its interpretation of serenity. A neutral palette harmonizes the room, but the visual textures seen on the stylized geometric pattern drapery from Cowtan & Tout and the seagrape leaf imagery on the throw pillows elevate the design. Above the Vanguard chair, a piece of art in a gold-finished frame showcases soft colors ranging from beige to bluish-gray. Powder Bath: The artistic wall covering fills this powder bathroom with an energetic spirit, while the chain-hung mirror from John-Richard adds a contemporary edge that builds this room’s unique character. By repeating the gold Calacatta flooring, Ficarra creates a sense of continuity, and a floating vanity cabinet in high-gloss taupe anchors the magnificent blue-gray onyx countertop and integrated sink.
88

Outdoor Living: Cooney’s coffered ceiling design defines the outdoor living, dining, and kitchen areas, creating harmony in this grand entertainment space. Ficarra adds stylish touches with a dark-smoke finish outdoor pendant from Hubbardton Forge and plush outdoor seating around this rustic Blaxsand weathered-teak coffee table. A pizza oven is a must-have that Ficarra surrounds with a gray stacked stone in the outdoor kitchen. Nearby, the gray metallic cement finish on the hood completes the look. Castle Services of Southwest Florida installed the motorized insect and solar screens and motorized hurricane shutters, keeping this space livable year-round.
“The color palette grew into a soothing tone-on-tone scheme full of lavish neutrals with accents in varying shades of blue to bring in the Gulf vibe,” states Ficarra.

89
Rear Elevation: The entertainment space of the boat dock is extended by a long deck, which blurs the boundary between land and water. Deep blues and turquoise pool tiles shimmer in an inviting aqua hue that Ficarra carries throughout the backyard as an accent color. The design seamlessly connects different activities and spaces, creating a highly successful and integrated backyard oasis.

TIMELESS ALLURE INNOVATIVE FLEX-STYLE DESIGN SOLUTIONS FOR A HOME WITH WALL-TO-WALL FUNCTION AND FORM 102
homeanddesign.net
homeanddesign.net
103
T
Three years of meticulous planning went into the architecture of this Port Royal home, waiting for interior designer Carrie Brigham of Carrie Brigham Design to soar above perfection and deliver this award-winning interior. Flexible function with style is the goal of the design, and Brigham invents the most incredible solutions that become functional works of art. Every room in this house has chameleonic qualities that can seamlessly transform spaces from a cozy retreat for two to a grand venue for charitable events. At the entry, a tall white oak pocket door cleverly tucks into the interior wall — artfully concealing the private areas of the home while simultaneously providing a stunning decorative millwork feature. Challenged to furnish as many ways as possible to store hats, bags, towels, cover-ups, and other items, Brigham blends the beauty of white oak with modern aesthetics, resulting in this pivoting hook system at the entry. “Every slice of this wall are hooks that fold out,” describes Brigham. “The pattern is part of the function. We wanted a geometric modern look when the hooks are in a closed configuration.” u
Entry: A discreet A/C channel runs along the junction of the wall and ceiling that Brigham balances with a flush baseboard at the bottom, which harmonizes function and form. Natural textures adorn the artwork and live-edge wooden mirror above the Berman | Rosetti console table festooned with a freeform sculpture. Throughout the home, stunning European white oak flooring by Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring from Naples Flooring Company adds warmth with sandy tones and matches Brigham’s custom hook system feature. Living Room: The jute-colored drapes impart warmth to the backdrop without obstructing the view through the Andersen Windows & Doors from Florida Wood Window & Door. Brigham thoughtfully introduces durable low-profile furnishings to keep the focus on both the water view and this Sand Dollar Award-winning media wall feature. A collaborative effort, these three vertical live-edge bleached elm slabs slide on a track amid the beautiful stone and white oak. The elm slabs can easily slide to view the television, showcasing functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Brigham creates an award-winning media wall in the living room by combining fire, moving wood slabs, a television, stonework, storage, display, and lighting into one feature. “This is how a designer’s brain works,” delights Brigham, answering how she could dream up such an amazing and intricate solution to conceal a television. “We are presented with challenges and requirements, and using live-edge vertical wood slabs for concealment was one of our earliest design concepts.” u
Kitchen: This home showcases creative solutions, with many evident in the kitchen. The cantilevering white oak extension on the island provides options for extra seating or cleverly folds down when more space is needed. To overcome the lack of wall space for a television, Brigham designs an innovative island with a swiveling 360-degree television that rises from the Exclusive White quartzite countertop. Meile and Sub-Zero panel-ready appliances create a seamless look with the European white oak cabinets. Kitchen Nook: “We chose this lighting fixture because it blurs the line between light and art and is a fixture that abstractly references a nautical feel without being kitschy,” shares Brigham regarding the Lindsey Adelman Studio pendant that hangs above the oval table and curved banquette by Christian Liagre. Brigham rests a cluster of freshly picked coconuts inside the raised vase, balancing the organic nature of the light fixture against the clean lines of the architectural details surrounding it. homeanddesign.net

Bar & Wine Room: Brigham goes with a different wood selection at the bar, choosing this elegant feathered maple with customcarved horizontal bands on the base. Atop this beautiful maple island is a semi-precious stone top that can be backlit, creating a striking display for evening parties. Brigham further enhances the mood with a sleek Dornbracht faucet and decorative root sculpture. The unique wine room features bronze smoked glass doors and a framed bronze smoked mirror over the solid door in the back — both from Builders Glass of Bonita — to create the illusion of a hidden door. Dining Room: Compared to the soaring ceiling heights of the living room and kitchen, Brigham intentionally lowers the scale above the dining table to create a cozy third space in this great room. The OCHRE light fixture — which playfully resembles a school of fish — hangs over the table, further defining the space, and between this element and the azure blue artwork, a subtle coastal touch is added to the decor.
Focusing on the client’s overall vision and attention to detail, the interior is complex from a build and design perspective. Still, it ultimately has a simple and timeless quality that could belong anywhere, and that is exactly what this client was hoping for. “The color scheme reflects nature, with warm wood tones and white oak playing a significant role,” Brigham details. “We incorporate shades of the Gulf into our design while adding touches of caramel. Overall it is a relaxed monochromatic palette.” To create a cozy atmosphere in a kitchen with 16-foot high ceilings, Brigham anchors the space with warm white oak cabinetry and brings the ceiling height down to a comfortable scale with overlapping floating beams. It is not only the main living spaces that get this attention to adaptability; the private and guest areas are full of this designer’s ingenuity. u
homeanddesign.net

Primary Bedroom: Modern style radiates from the white oak headboard wall and the sleek, supple bouclé bench from Maxine Snider, while Brigham brings in cool tones with this custom silk rug from Design Center by STARK. The floating parasol ceiling artfully conceals the A/C and drapery track, affording many options. Brigham explains, “There are several layers of window treatments, including privacy sheers, roller shades, blackout roller shades, and traversing casement drapery — all designed to create various moods depending on the time of day.” Primary Bathroom: Skylights throughout the home provide natural light but also present Brigham with another puzzle to solve by finding a single paint color that is pleasing under so many different light conditions — Seapearl by Benjamin Moore fits the bill. Premium, ultra-clear mirrors from Builders Glass of Bonita preserve true colors by eliminating the green reflection inherent in mirrors. The wood tones veer into a gray hue with this sandblasted white oak cabinetry, and the vanity benefits from integrated lighting and maximized storage to keep a hair dryer hidden, and outlets inside the drawers.

Each personal and guest space is brimming with hidden storage, while the most impressive show of versatility is in the flexible guest suite. “This room divider is a true marvel, appearing as an exquisite millwork detail when flat against the wall, seamlessly blending into the design. Yet, with ten hinged doors, it can be effortlessly pulled across the room, dividing the large area into two separate and functional spaces,” expresses Brigham. This flexible, stylish home is a testament to the collaboration of interior design, architecture, and construction. At the same time, Carrie Brigham’s boundless creativity elevates the interior and gives this home its timeless appeal. n
Guest Bedroom & En Suite: The guest space and en suite exude a chill vibe. Luxurious monochromatic fabrics and the exquisite sandblasted oak nightstands by Robert James Collection endow cool tones that contrast the warm white oak. The built-in wardrobe lines up seamlessly with the baseboard and is a prime example of meticulous planning. Brigham ensures durability with the finishes in the en suite and a high-end look with the wall sconces from Jonathan Browning Studios and hardware pulls from Turnstyle Designs.

Powder Bath: Calacatta Gold tile with smokey tendrils from Ruben Sorhegui Tile gives this powder bathroom the look of seagrass on the ocean floor — a subtle coastal nod. The white oak cabinetry is topped with a marble countertop and backsplash that flows behind the vanity to the wall with a Vahallan Papers covering. This composition in the corner creates an engaging visual of white oak, stone, and glittery champagne taupe wallpaper. Flexible Guest Suite: Almost forty on-site meetings went into perfecting this folding door system that, when extended, effortlessly transforms this generous space into two separate guest rooms. The ceiling beam conceals the A/C, and the placement of the folding doors mandates the spacing between each beam. Two queen-sized beds from Mr. Brown London and a charming lamp by Mario Lopez Torres are on one end, while the adjacent living area can be converted into a sleeping space by pulling out the sofa bed.
“This room divider is a true marvel, appearing as an exquisite millwork detail when flat against the wall, seamlessly blending into the design,” expresses Brigham. homeanddesign.net

Outdoor Living: Above the outdoor kitchen is a stained cypress-clad ceiling that flows directly to the outdoors. “The overall architecture has an aluminum roof, and I wanted this outdoor space to feel like it had a natural thatch roof above,” delights Brigham, who uses the exposed underside of naturally weathered Wallaba wood shingles in an application she describes as “roof in reverse.” Comfortable furnishings rest atop the Abbey Carpet & Floors outdoor rug that faces the stone-clad fireplace and television.

OASIS IN THE PINES LUXURIOUS ESTATE DESIGNED FOR COMFORT AND PRIVACY
A
Although over two years in the making, designing this home never felt like work to David Fruscione of Republic of Decor. “The team that worked on this project was phenomenal. Connor & Gaskins Unlimited Homes were incredible, and the site superintendent was impeccable,” Fruscione declares. “We had the right personalities, the right energy. That’s how the magic happens. We were a dream team.” Architect John Cooney shares his excitement regarding this project. “Most of the homes we design are waterfront homes. Therefore, we usually don’t have a lot of flexibility in the layout and orientation of the home. This property was so heavily vegetated that we couldn’t even walk the site, so we investigated designs without knowing the final orientation of the home,” he shares. u

Front Exterior: The privacy afforded by the wooded homesite and the ample natural light makes possible the abundance of glass in a design that Architect John Cooney says, “pays homage to the modern-day farm,” with its standing seam metal roof, rustic stone cladding, cantilever sun louvers, and gable end at the entry. The Mexican beach pebble bordering the plants and steppingstones creates a neat textural element that echoes the stone cladding. Entry: The homeowner was unsure about the wallpaper at first, but was thrilled with the initial installation and even requested more to be added throughout the house. The entryway credenza is custom designed. “It’s one of one and really lovely,” emphasizes Fruscione. Solid poured cantilevered slabs form an oversized overhang protecting the large pivot door, which Fruscione says was an engineering marvel to get installed. Aerial: Taking full advantage of the rare opportunity to design a home with an unlimited footprint, Cooney envisioned “individual pods that would be distinctive to each wing.” This bird’s eye view showcases the asymmetrical balance achieved by Landscape Architect Christian Andrea of Architectural Land Design, who used a single row of foxtail palms along the entry walk to offset the garage mass. Andrea observes, “The steppingstone walkway that connects the driveway to the front door makes it feel that the garden experience begins the moment you leave the driveway.”

Living Room: The impressive 26-foot cathedral ceiling is a defining feature of this home. However, what truly steals the show is the abundance of natural light. “The transparency of this home is emphasized by large panes of glass on the front and the rear of the home. The abundance of natural light requires minimal to no artificial lighting throughout the house,” says Cooney. Fruscione’s choice of accent color — a greenish-grayish-bluish hue he calls lagoon — adds a subtle pop of color against the home’s organic neutral background.

Clearing the acreage was the first task for the builder. Afterward, the entire team walked the nine-acre site with flags in hand to determine the best location for building. “We tried to find an area where impacts to the existing vegetation would be minimized,” adds Landscape Architect Christian Andrea of Architectural Land Design. “We also tried to create a sinuous drive to the front door that respected as much of the mature canopy as possible.” “Once the property was cleared and we walked the site with the client, we ended up flipping the entire home and tweaking the design!” concludes Cooney. “The project started as a fully wooded lot. This enabled us to manage every aspect of the project from the very beginning,” explains CGU Homes’ President and Partner Jon Lawrence. CGU Homes Director of Operations Mike Gargiulo picks up the conversational thread, “Post-COVID there was quite a bit of tail wagging the dog regarding getting materials. We ordered materials earlier than usual to meet that challenge.” Lawrence underscores the importance of having the right people on a project, saying, “We had a very experienced team on this project. When you have the right team, that’s what drives the success of a project.” u

Kitchen: Fruscione partnered with AlliKristé Custom Cabinetry & Kitchen Design to craft a personalized stained finish for the oak cabinets. Two slabs of quartzite were necessary to cover the 163-inchby-68-inch island. A butcher block top was integrated on one end to create a relaxed seating spot for the homeowners. The François & Co. Fournier range hood, which was custom-designed to have an “elegant interpretation of industrial style”, needed a support system of chains and bolts to hang — which was also custom-engineered.
Dining Room: The custom-stained tongue-and-groove ceiling is prominent in the minimally furnished formal dining area. Fruscione sourced a sleek Hammerton Studio Axis artisan glass triple linear chandelier to illuminate the space. The modular design allows for customization of the angle and height of each rod. The Axis Collection uses recycled material from Hammerton Studio’s glassblowing operations to create functional works of art. Because they are handmade, no two pieces are exactly alike.

The drive began when the homeowner paid a visit to Fruscione’s showroom. “From the moment I met David, I felt we could work together. His shop was organized, and the curation of items appealed to me. I told him I had strong opinions but was looking for someone to push me out of my comfort zone. He assured me he could and WOULD do that,” states the homeowner. u
“We had the right personalities, the right energy. That’s how the magic happens. We were a dream team,” Fruscione declares.
Breakfast Nook: A bespoke table encircled by metal studs with matched veneers on top — and surrounded by a quintet of Palecek Conrad side chairs — commands center stage in the breakfast nook beneath an Arteriors Ray Booth Collection Versa pendant. The large cabinet doors hide a coffee bar, and a recessed wine refrigerator takes this primary eating spot from morning to night. Weiland LiftSlide doors with flush tracks create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Dirty Kitchen: “Dubbed the ‘dirty kitchen’ by many clients, the catering kitchen diminishes the clatter and clutter of meal preparation and clean up,” explains Cooney. The laundry area is located to the right but is not visible from the main area. The dark blue cabinets create a beautiful contrast to the lighter kitchen cabinets of the main kitchen and complement the subway tile backsplash from Walker Zanger.
132
homeanddesign.net
VIP Guest Suite Bathroom: The VIP bath is swathed in a silvery snakeskin embossed wallpaper providing “great texture,” according to Fruscione, in an otherwise sleek room resplendent with marble and glass. Fruscione and the homeowner meticulously chose mosaic tiles to compose the patterned floor using the same process as in the primary bath. The custom vanity from AlliKristé Custom Cabinetry & Kitchen Design features a towel shelf below the spacious drawers.
Loggia: Spanning the distance from the main house to the guest suite, the materials used to construct the loggia harmonize with the rest of the home. Six stacked stone columns support a poured concrete ceiling clad in the customstained tongue-and-groove throughout the home. The sealed natural stone forms the walkway.
VIP Guest Suite: The VIP suite enjoys the privacy of its own wing. On the headboard wall, a subtle wallpaper with stitched detail stretches to the pitched wood ceiling. Window coverings in muted shades of blue and gray frame the verdant landscape beyond. As with the primary bath, “The plants around the foundation of the building are all intended to be kept low, to respect the full floor-to-ceiling windows,” explains Andrea.
homeanddesign.net
133
Primary Bedroom: A zero-corner sliding glass door entirely opens a corner of the primary bedroom to an outdoor landing. “There is a lot of emphasis on nature in this home’s design,” says Cooney. “We tried to take advantage of that in every room.” Fruscione covered the headboard wall with natural banana bark wallpaper in a chevron pattern that draws the eye upward to the beams which accent the room’s voluminous peaked ceiling.
Primary Bathroom: While the primary bathroom hosts the conventional features of a his-and-her layout — dual walk-in closets, dual vanity areas, dual water closets — they are separated by a shared shower. The floor-to-ceiling windows can be covered by the motorized shades, or left unadorned to showcase the natural beauty and privacy of the estate. To create the mosaic tile floor, Fruscione, and the homeowner worked with Ruben Sorhegui Tile to choose colors and assign them to areas of the mosaic, resulting in a truly custom design.
134
homeanddesign.net
Casita Bedroom: The guest house has two identical bedrooms, mirrored, each with a full bath. Fruscione departed from the bespoke fixtures and furnishings used in the main house, relying on ready-made selections to furnish the casual rooms. Casita Chat Room: Fruscione took a different, “more adventurous” approach when designing the interiors of the freestanding “casita” or guest house. Relying on a deeper shade of the selfnamed lagoon accent color, he papered the focal wall and chose furnishings that were evocative of a boutique hotel. A morning kitchen, refrigerator, and washer/dryer duo complete the comfortable living space.
Cooney designed a casual space in the courtyard primarily as a combination art studio and home gym. A nicely appointed spa-inspired bath and the flexibility of the design can render the area as additional guest housing. homeanddesign.net
135
Pool: “The pool and rear yard are part of an enclosed courtyard experience,” describes Andrea. “All the design elements were selected to accentuate formality. All plantings are set in linear fashion. Oversized step stones set in synthetic turf connect the different spaces.” A generous tanning shelf leads to a centrally located in-pool spa. The pool vista ends in a water wall, a climatized Renson pergola, and a large, graceful travelers palm.
136
homeanddesign.net
Fruscione and his client began the collaboration by pulling together inspirational ideas and visuals. The duo focused on “warm and earthy but modern images. We were going for a blend between modern and transitional with a little edge,” notes Fruscione. “We knew there would be a neutral palette, but we mixed in layers of texture and subtle pops of color, all done in a purposeful way. The goal was to strike a balance between luxe and comfortable.” n
Outdoor Living: The outdoor living area is accessed from the main house via the breakfast nook. It features living and dining areas, a half bath, a 36” gas grill, and a see-through linear ventless fireplace. “Outdoor living areas have really evolved over the years, to the point where they rival interior spaces,” says architect Cooney. This space has motorized insect and solar screens and hurricane shutters installed by Castle Services of Southwest Florida to control the environment. Both are integrated into the home’s Lutron system — smart home technology introduced to the project by Cooney. Powder Bath: With its dark charcoal painted ceiling and chic metallic wallpaper, “This is the edgiest room in the house,” Fruscione says of the powder bathroom. Although privacy is not a concern on a day-to-day basis, this bath is outfitted with a programmable switch glass window. “The technology is very effective,” says Lawrence, who recommended the product for this application. The clear glass switches to opaque at the touch of a button. homeanddesign.net
137
Pergola: To expand the outdoor living experience, CGU Homes suggested a Renson pergola. The customizable structure features mechanized louvers on the ceiling and side panels that flex to control environmental factors. The concrete and shellstone tile floor was mud set using a Schluter System to prevent efflorescence.

MODERN DAY COTTAGE EXCEPTIONAL TEAM PAYS HOMAGE TO THE NOSTALGIC COASTAL STYLE OF OLD NAPLES 150
homeanddesign.net
T
The charming ambiance of an Old Naples cottage is the cornerstone of MHK Architecture’s inspiration for this home in Aqualane Shores. Around this local area, historic cottages date back to the mid-20th century, but today the definition of a vacation home differs dramatically. MHK Architecture designs a contemporary coastal cottage befitting the 21st century, while VIV Homes’ robust construction techniques propel this design. “VIV Homes has an unrivaled track record of 21 homes sold over the past eight years and an astonishing 80% of homes sold before completion,” Rex Miller with William Raveis Real Estate shares. “Nearly all VIV homes sell at record-breaking prices.” MHK Architecture and Architectural Land Design collaborate with VIV Design — VIV Homes’ in-house interiors division — forging this unstoppable powerhouse in Naples. u
Living Room: “I kept the ceiling beams white to not distract from the outdoors. Instead, the shadowing of this element creates the interest,” shares Reed. Working with Dutch Made Custom Cabinetry in Indiana, Reed visits the facility’s color laboratory and develops an exclusive line of cabinetry colors only available through VIV Homes. Reed brings in this enchanting and gentle earthy hue from her Taupe Collection for the custom shelves, coalescing with the rich hues of the stunning Calacatta Lincoln marble fireplace.

Architect Maureen Minker of MHK Architecture shares, “The exterior has a formality with its grand entrance, but it relaxes inside with a view to the pool.” Continuity flows from the exterior to the interior because of this exceptional teams’ emphasis on collaboration. Interior Designer Carly Reed of VIV Design begins crafting her vision while attending meetings at MHK Architecture. The allure of this vibrant white and espresso color scheme lies in Reed’s adeptness in discerning the precise balance of each value, transforming it from minimalist to captivating. “This home’s interior has a contemporary edge to suit the current lifestyle, while the exterior references the history of the town,” says John Orgren, Residential Studio Designer with MHK Architecture. Inside, the modern staircase with open risers showcases this idea. Meticulous attention is given to the interconnectivity of the open living areas, and the team agrees that the kitchen is a work of art. The shimmering effect of sunlight reflecting off mother-of-pearl inspires Reed’s design in the primary bedroom. “Layering whites and dark accents, I incorporate metallics for a glamorous interplay between the white base and metallic sheen,” explains Reed, who emphasizes the collective effort put into the completely custom elegant primary bathroom. u

Front Elevation: A horseshoe driveway creates a graceful approach, enhanced by the stately Sylvester palms. “Designing the exterior, we blend various architectural elements such as lap-siding stucco, smooth stucco, board and batten, and carefully crafted bracket and corbel details to achieve this contemporary coastal aesthetic,” explains Minker. Deep espresso accents the White Diamond house color by Benjamin Moore, while the Bevolo lighting highlights the architecture. Andersen Windows & Doors sourced from Florida Wood Window & Door are a must-have, like the built-in planter pots — a signature of VIV Homes.
Staircase: At the entrance of this home is the floating staircase with iron balusters. The wood railing and steps are done in European white oak, and Reed points out that the wood railing has a rounded-off square shape, noting that every aspect has been given attention to design. The Italian chandelier from AERIN resembles dangling organic silver dollars, while all around it, the white-on-white wall detailing and foyer ceiling tray elevate this space, filling it with dimension.
Study: Reed aims to achieve a powerful atmosphere in this study by incorporating wide white ceiling beams against taupe wood cladding. This custom desk is Reed’s design, matching the floating desk drawers with a Calacatta Lincoln top. This symmetrical wall layout featuring sculptural artwork by Christopher Guy and two shallow shelf built-ins mirrors the wall directly across from it — wainscot and a stylized beach scene echo the symmetry.
homeanddesign.net
153
Kitchens: This home boasts every appliance a chef could desire between the main and service kitchen, like this Wolf range. The Extra Prime Cristallo quartzite, crafted by Rain Forest Marble, radiates elegance atop this warm European white oak floor, by Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring sourced through Naples Flooring Company. The Oney black steel hood contrasts the bright white cabinets in Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace. Black-frame lantern pendants from Visual Comfort partner for a cohesive aesthetic in the same sightline.
154

In this tropical climate, the pink Bougainvillea will soon envelop the trellis that is in direct line of sight from the primary suite. This resort experience in the rear yard is undeniably one of a kind, boasting the longest pool in the area at 65 feet. “VIV Homes goes above and beyond, affording us what we need to let our creativity flow and design paradise,” shares Phil McHenry of Architectural Land Design. u
Dining Room: Reed keenly directs the lines of the tongue-and-groove ceiling parallel to the Century Furniture dining table and toward the outdoor view, visually elongating the space. A braided jute rug grounds the area and pairs well with the raffia-wrapped chairs from Palacek. Tall wine coolers with gallery shelves above are done in Reed’s custom taupe. However, Reed lightens with a greige hue for the center built-in cabinet buffet, adding sophistication with oil-rubbed bronze hardware from Belwith Keeler.

155
Primary Closet: Crafted in Italy by Poliform, this spacious closet takes six months for design and fabrication and is made from Elm. The fumé glass doors and a dark espresso frame harmonize with the home’s overall aesthetic. This elevated closet indulges in luxurious extras and embellishments, from valet drawers to ample shoe storage and everything in between.

“VIV Homes goes above and beyond, affording us what we need to let our creativity flow and design paradise,” shares Phil McHenry of Architectural Land Design.
Primary Bathroom: Mystery White book-matched marble with a gray marble border from Rain Forest Marble grace the floor, walls, and shower, radiating pure elegance. Every detail in this remarkable primary bathroom is custom, down to the stone border and polished nickel reveal around the mirrors. Vertical ribbing on the cabinetry end-caps adds a textured, linear complexity that distills refinement. Cut crystal Bennington sconces from Visual Comfort and the glitzy ceiling-mount light from Restoration Hardware complete this breathtaking, glamorous atmosphere.
Primary Bedroom: A painted white vaulted ceiling creates an airy and dramatic ambiance by amplifying space and reflecting light in this primary bedroom, whereas the European white oak flooring — Giuseppina by Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring sourced through Naples Flooring Company — anchors it. The Kelly Hoppen poster bed kicks off Reed’s two-tone theme, fitted with luxurious SFERRA bedding and pearlescent throw pillows from Square Feathers. Across the room is a show-stopping mother-of-pearl dresser from Caracole that inspires Reed’s selections.
This house is distinguished not only by its exceptional design but also by its price point, selling for over twenty million dollars. Rex Miller, P.A., of William Raveis Real Estate — who sold this home — delights in sharing, “It is through a comprehensive, coordinated effort that we consistently deliver excellence. It is this attention that sets us apart from the rest.” n homeanddesign.net
157
Loft: Vertical paneling from VIV Homes’ exclusive cabinet line, showcasing the Weathered Wood Collection, adorns the television wall and wet bar. This distinctive weathered finish imparts tropical charm to the inviting ambiance, harmonizing beautifully with the lofty ceiling. Two luxuriously plush off-white swivel chairs in a downy fabric from Eichholtz enrich the textural palette. At the same time, touches of teal and soft blue atop the u-shape sofa and daybed from Interior Define add a casual refinement to this loft.
Cabana Bathroom: The pebble forms and earthy tones of this Ceppo Cremo stone by Temmer Marble from Rain Forest Marble make up the countertop, shower wall, and bench. The ribbed vanity in VIV Homes’ Weathered Wood Collection gives that resort impression and is the same wood and finish Reed uses to divide the vanity area from the commode and shower. A stone mosaic is on the floor, while a vanilla-beige slab clads the wall. Among the rustic finishes, polished nickel on the faucet and a Kelly Wearstler pendant interpose a metallic contrast. 158
homeanddesign.net
Covered Outdoor Living: Automated roll-down solar, insect screens, and hurricane shutters from Castle Services of Southwest Florida protect this stunning outdoor living area. Reed cleverly places vertical wood panels for delineation, while the rich espresso hue on the ceiling unifies the seating and dining spaces, showcasing her expertise. Opustone’s elegant Wellington quartzite from Rain Forest Marble is chosen for the island, while a weathered wood table from Sunline Original builds a resort atmosphere, enhanced by decorative lighting from Wilson Lighting.
homeanddesign.net
159
Outdoor Living & Fire Pit: “It is all about the experience and the moments that we create for that resort area,” shares McHenry. “We wanted a destination for this rear yard where you could entertain separate from the covered lanai.” Ipe wood decking anchors the design, imbuing warmth among the bright white finishes and the lush privacy landscaping beyond. The raised fire pit is clad in the same Wellington quartzite from Rain Forest Marble as the island in the covered outdoor living area, amplifying continuity.

Pool & Spa: The floating stone path offers a magical experience traversing this lit pool, glowing from the serene palette of polychromatic blue hues of the Lunada Bay Tile. Whether on the shallow sun shelf with the Tucci umbrella and Ledge Loungers or in the raised spa, the architecture’s character is in full view. Elegant Confederate jasmine grows on an espalier vine system, forming a stunning harlequin pattern or a lush green field with delicate white flowers.

Within the composite style of coastal modern, it is the amalgamation of specific design aspects that gives it its appeal. The warm, neutral stucco exterior in Aesthetic White by Sherwin-Williams accentuates the linear banding. In addition, sleek rooflines and frosted glass garage doors emphasize the home’s modern heritage. An island railing, a custom mahogany door, exposed rafters, and substantial brackets enhance its distinct coastal character. The driveway’s banding and salt-tolerant Clusia hedges are inviting during the approach.

A pivotal moment arises for Alex Thies of Adelyn Charles Interiors and luxury builder Nate Johnson of Potter Homes when this beachfront spec home sells during construction, shifting inspiration from California coastal charm to an urban beach retreat for a cosmopolitan businesswoman and her family. Beginning as a spec house, the team collaborates on the design direction. Residential Designer Richard Guzman of R.G. Designs shares, “We aim to break from the expected, avoiding repetition by consistently striving for fresh, distinctive looks, and in this instance, a look that harmonizes coastal and modern elements.” The exterior achieves a soulful modern equilibrium by combining smooth stucco, contemporary garage doors, an island railing, and wood accents. On the interior, neutral sand tones of the beach inspire the colorway. u
Living Room: The design team’s commitment to the client’s wishes meant incorporating a modern, low-profile Italian sofa. Pairing it with low-profile contemporary coastal furnishings, like these u-shape club chairs with woven wrapping from Palecek, creates a harmonious blend of modern and coastal styles. Elegant European white oak flooring from Real Wood Floors adorns the space, creating a neutral stage for all the deep chocolates, warm browns, creams, and soft whites of the furnishings and built-ins.

Kitchen: Casing upper windows with cabinetry merges interior design and architecture. Thies mirrors this integration with glass front cabinets on the adjacent wall, bar, and living room built-in. Mixing styles, the kitchen includes a whisper of traditional on the refrigerator door panels, a hint of coastal charm with the nickel gap hood, and modern flair with glossy vertically stacked backsplash tiles and sleek pendant lighting. Sandy tones on the exotic Cristallo quartzite evoke the beach.

Making a mid-stream shift in design direction was effortless for Thies and Associate Designer Emily Schlimm, due to the neutral backdrop of the interior. The kitchen, bar, and living room harmonize with the high-contrast exterior, but are inviting in soft white and deep chocolate brown. The team embraces sleeker, low-profile furnishings, and to balance the infusion of urbanity, white oak, woven details, and seaside accessories remind us that we are at the beach. Up the stairwell, coastal edginess and anticipation percolate, and it is upstairs that Thies fashions an elevated coastal vibe with a modern flair. u
Thies reflects, “Working with this particular client was a smooth process that ultimately led to a change in design direction. However, I love that we brought in the client’s personality, and the result is really beautiful.” Bar: Thies intensifies the full-bodied moodiness of this bar by promoting the dark chocolate brown from an accent to a dominant hue. A bright white Cowtan & Tout woven grasscloth wallcovering between the tall Sub-Zero wine coolers balances this saturated alcove, while gold on the abstract art from Leftbank Art heightens the swanky mood. Low-profile stools in a velour velvet-handed linen are intentionally not leather to strike a textural balance.

White oak flooring stretches from end to end — bookended by soaring windows that fill this space with the Florida sun and picturesque views. “This brightly lit loft is a testament to the amount of planning that goes into all of our design and construction,” shares Johnson. Upscale coastal blue and gray hues, neutral sand tones, and natural materials grace the upstairs office and guest bedrooms. At the same time, the primary bedroom stands out with its rich navy accent wall and diamond ceiling beam design. Thies uses ceiling design to draw focus to the primary motivation behind beachside construction — the enchanting Gulf vista and the outdoor poolside living that interfaces between them. u
Art Detail: Rectilinear shapes on the black metal stair rail give this location its modern touch, yet the European white oak on the wood handrail and treads center it in coastal warmth. For years, the client had admired this highcontrast artwork but didn’t have a suitable space for it until the expansive wall of this stairway was built. The highcontrast artwork suits the overall design concept, adding sentiment and significance to the home.
Loft: “We had this opportunity at the top of the stairs with these dramatic high ceilings,” shares Thies. “We decided to break up the expanse with these custom-stained white oak beams and headers.” Thies describes the pendants from Made Goods as having a funky organic shape that reflects the homeowner’s taste while enhancing the design by juxtaposing it with modern architecture. The statement piece in the loft is a teal credenza with gold accents from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams.

Her Office: “The windows reveal beautiful shades of blue. It’s a mistake not to include them in this room,” says Thies. The palette softens to coastal charm with a blue-gray hue on the walls — Front Porch by Sherwin-Williams. The office features an exquisite credenza from John-Richard and a brass and ivory rope pendant from Shades of Light. Adjacent to the primary bedroom, this area serves as a place to relax in the evenings or to conduct business with swivel chairs by Jessica Charles.
Office Bathroom: The office boasts a stunning complete bathroom, ensuring it could easily double as a welcoming guest suite. The cerused white oak vanity is topped with luxurious marble, and the bone-inlay mirror reflects a breathtaking water view. Additionally, the clear glass globe pendant from Arteriors, which features a brass band, flawlessly coordinates with the other metal finishes used throughout the space.

Primary Bathroom: Continuity flows from the kitchen as the vanity cabinetry incorporates a linear window. Thies brings the cabinetry framed mirror to window height, increasing the reflection of natural light. The floor tile is intentionally understated to not distract from the bathtub wall’s marble mosaic in a deconstructed diamond pattern. To contrast the sheen of the wall tile, a matte Signature Hardware tub is chosen, while the Euroglide barn door on the shower leaves a lasting upscale impression.
Primary Bedroom: Thies dives deep into shades of dark blue, bringing in this denim-washed sisal wallcovering from Kravet and the Boll & Branch bedding in mineral blue. The pop-up soffit with diamond-pattern cross beams replaces traditional beams yet instills this primary bedroom with the same balance of style throughout the home. In a rich finish with nickel pulls, this dresser from Vanguard anchors the abstract artwork that resembles the ocean.

Patrick Trefz, Landscape Architect of Outside Productions International, focuses on every detail to prioritize the experience outdoors. “When crafting these infinity edge pools, we guide the water’s flow along the edge, following the wall’s shape to prevent splashing. By controlling its descent, we reduce the effect of wind and create a calm and peaceful environment,” explains Trefz. For all beachfront projects, the plant palette is limited as only certain plants can withstand the salty gusty winds of the Gulf. Instead of a lush rear yard, the zero-edge pool becomes the lure to the back that blurs the boundary between the home and the endless horizon. From spec to spectacular, this home by the beach is a fresh, symbiotic take on coastal modern. Thies reflects, “Working with this particular client was a smooth process that ultimately led to a change in design direction. However, I love that we brought in the client’s personality, and the result is really beautiful.” n

Guest Bedroom (Above): Serenity wafts around this guest suite because of the blue and gray hues and billowy cloud-like drapery against the SherwinWilliams paint Tinsmith. Plush bedding in soft blues tops the bed, while the two hand-woven ottomans have a coastal texture with coconut beads interwoven with coarse rope. Atop the white-washed nightstands are gray ceramic lamps from Regina Andrew that work to enhance the symmetry of the two windows on either side of the bed.
Guest Bathroom: The en suite achieves a sophisticated coastal atmosphere through a monochromatic color scheme and innovative decor. Sleek, frameless glass sconces from Visual Comfort are both airy and modern and bestow a subtle complexity beside the coastal look of the bone inlay mirror from Serena & Lily. Blue-gray cabinetry topped with a cloudy gray quartzite with blue-gray veining casts a punch of color to the modern coolness and yet complements all the colors of this bathroom.

Powder Bath: Off the main living area is a cozy window nook with a nickel gap bench seat. The Kravet fabric cushion features refreshing coastal greens, creams, and blues. This two-toned aesthetic extends to the powder bathroom vanity surrounded by other cool hues. The jute mirror imparts warmth and infuses coastal ambiance, but it is a quirky light fixture from Lighting First that bridges the different styles.
Guest Bedroom (Below): Leaning more modern than coastal in this guest bedroom, the ceiling design exemplifies that aesthetic with its floating slabs. Geometric art and the chic wood accented bed reinforce the modish look, while the black stained, sliced wood teak accents from Uttermost contribute to the edgy narrative. Soft blue and cream tones create an airy atmosphere, with light drapery framing the coastal vista. Swivel chairs with a channel pattern from Four Hands invite relaxation while enjoying the view.

“When crafting these infinity edge pools, we guide the water’s flow along the edge, following the wall’s shape to prevent splashing. By controlling its descent, we reduce the effect of wind and create a calm and peaceful environment,” explains Trefz.
Outdoor Living: Oak ceiling beams point toward the sensational view for the living areas that are made as comfortable as any interior space with a grouping of upholstered outdoor furniture by Restoration Hardware. The outdoor kitchen boasts a stunning Taj Mahal quartzite backsplash, accented by a white oak band that echoes the ceiling beams. Above, white nickel gap paneling extends to the ceiling, harmonizing with the outdoor grill hood, creating a seamless connection with the adjacent interior kitchen.

Pool: The pebble finish inside the pool, giving off the same hue as the Gulf, is intentional. Using as little railing as possible, Trefz designs an experience with a privacy wall and includes three scuppers that create a melodic aqua tune when the Gulf is calm and quiet. Porcelain tiles resembling exquisite shellstone from DeMarco Tile form a luxurious pool deck and outdoor living area. Thies introduces white hexagon tiles that stem from the waterline along the privacy wall.

This beautiful ranch-style home is situated on a grand property surrounded by century-old oak trees, providing a breathtaking natural setting. The homeowners worked closely with Arlynn McDaniel of Freestyle Interiors to ensure that the design of their custom-built dream home maximized the benefits of indoor/outdoor living and complemented the stunning surroundings. “The home is tucked back in the woods, on the river, so we wanted to keep it woodsy and organic, with warmer tones and finishes and lots of natural materials,” McDaniel states. The structure’s location on the property was also thoughtfully considered to maximize the home’s orientation. “The site was twenty-plus acres of undisturbed, rural property with immaculate oldgrowth oak trees,” says Jason Hicks of Guzman + Hicks Architecture. “We wanted to preserve as many of those as possible, so we walked the site with the clients, looking for the best location for the house that would achieve that goal.” u
Front Elevation: The winding driveway leads visitors through the lush property to the home’s front, which includes a series of peaked rooflines below hundred-year-old oaks. “The beautiful texturing of the stone and architectural roofline really portrays the surrounding oak trees in the best light,” notes Hicks. Echo Ridge Country Ledgestone wraps the front façade in keeping with the natural surroundings. Christian Andrea of Architectural Land Design collaborated with Justin Walsh for the planting design and selections.

Foyer: The foyer introduces one of many pieces of art custom-made for the home by local artist Molly Wooley, who is known for her stunning landscapes that incorporate the beauty of Florida. “The artist spent a lot of time in the house, soaking in the feel of the space, to create the art so it naturally reflected the features of the home and property,” relates McDaniel. The painting pairs beautifully with the opposite organic wallcovering.
Entry: The front entrance reflects light patterns from the transom, sidelights, and the stately door. The polished porcelain tile floor with wood inlay ushers guests into a comfortable reception area. “We’d designed a house that the clients walked through. They fell in love with the open hybrid great-room concept and the reception area. We expanded on that design for this house, making it larger to fit their needs,” relates Guzman.
Reception Area: The reception area across from the foyer gives the first glimpse of the outdoor living the home offers. “The large picture window, and the drapery framing it, right across from the door, draw the view outside to the pool,” McDaniel notes. To keep the space from feeling dark and closed-in, an arrangement of mirrors on opposing walls reflects light from the floor-to-ceiling window and the four Hubbardton Forge sconces that frame the seating area. Living Room & Wine Room (Right): The great room prominently features the open concept that the clients admired during their tour of their inspiration home. “This is their main entertaining room, so I maximized seating with very large sofas without making the space too crowded,” McDaniel notes about the forty-two-inch-deep Taylor King sectional. The see-through wine room, from Royston Architectural Elements, features floor-to-ceiling bottle racking and neatly fills a narrow blank space on the original floor plan across from the butler’s pantry. 200

“We tried to orient the house to the west so more sun would be on the pool, and we rotated the orientation as much as possible so it wouldn’t feel like someone was coming into the side of the house,” adds Rich Guzman of Guzman + Hicks Architecture. This planning results in a magical experience for anyone driving up to the home, which is halfway into the property. “You wind through the oak trees, and the house emerges gradually,” explains Hicks. “But the trees are the first view you get as you approach.” This attention to detail, careful consideration of the landscape, and the teams’ collaborative design process came about in no small part thanks to the synergy of the professionals involved, who, along with Benchmark General Contractors, have cooperated on several homes. “We’ve worked with Arlynn on many projects over the last twenty or more years. She’s such a trooper, always thinking outside the box, and she makes projects fun with her excitement and creative ideas,” Guzman notes. But it was the clients — with their love of gardening and their vision for the home’s surroundings and the interior — who made the project special for all involved. u

Kitchen: While the main kitchen cabinetry is white, McDaniel introduced dark wood tones into the kitchen on the bar and side cabinet, which houses the refrigerator and freezer. Two multilayer Hubbardton Forge pendants hang from the wood-beamed ceiling, illuminating the island. This expansive and efficient space is where the client — who loves to cook — prepares fresh vegetables from her raisedbed gardens. A waterfall-edge Cambria quartz countertop with dramatic veining on the island recalls the Orange River that borders this home’s property. At the same time, the glass tile on the backsplash in a simple beige tone fits the natural and organic themes of its interior. The clean lines of the tile, crisp white cabinetry — from Thomas Mix Kitchens + Bath — and the sleek metal of the appliances, give the home the slightly modern feel McDaniel introduced in select ways to keep the design from leaning too traditional.

Dining: One thing that was essential to the home’s design was interior illumination. Explains Guzman, “Our homes always have 360-degree windows to get light into the interior from all sides. There are no deadend hallways. The dining room is a great example — this side faces the southeast, so it gets a lot of morning sun.” Power shades tucked behind the fixed window-framing drapery help control the intensity of the light as it falls on the wood-inlay floor.
Guest Bedroom: A Bernhardt bed features a headboard made of cork slices, another woodsy material. The wallcovering behind it is also cork threaded with silver accents — a material echoed in the bedside lamps. “The wallcovering adds a touch of shine and modern sophistication to a more natural-feeling bed, taking the design a little more transitional to modern,” McDaniel adds. Soapstone — a natural material that introduces a touch of grounding black to the room — tops a pair of Hooker nightstands.

“The homeowner wanted to create a large orchard with a variety of fruit trees and raised planters for vegetable gardens,” says Christian Andrea of Architectural Land Design. “It was neat having a client with a passion and expertise in Florida gardens. They truly enjoy the outdoors and the environment, and it was a pleasure being able to work with them.” McDaniel agrees, “This project just flowed, and I think that was in no small part because of the easy floor plan and the terrific clients, who really gave us free rein to do what we do best.” Ultimately, this rural paradise is a distinctive retreat for nature enthusiasts, where the home seamlessly blends with the surrounding land. The creative talents of the designers are embodied in this magnificent showpiece. n
206
homeanddesign.net
Primary Bedroom: The primary bedroom features a walnut-toned room divider to separate the sleeping space from the sitting area. “The wall detail wasn’t on the plan,” notes McDaniel, “but my client wanted the alcove to be more of a separate space. The extra columns on the divider frame the window, so the eye is drawn right to the woods and pool outside.” The divider also conceals the lower ceiling necessary to house the window coverings.
Primary Bathroom: A concrete tub staged against a marble-look porcelain tile serves as the focal point of the primary bathroom. “The tub was the very first thing selected for the house. The client saw it in the Ferguson showroom and loved it, and it became the jumping-off point for more natural, organic-type materials,” recalls McDaniel. She added cutouts to the wall, initially designed to span floor to ceiling, to bring in light from the clerestory windows. Using the same tile on the walls and floor allows the room to flow naturally and keeps the space from becoming choppy. The cabinetry from Thomas Mix Kitchens + Baths is stained in the same mushroom-taupe found throughout the rest of the house, which helps to add warmth to the marble look of the tile. Sconces from DVI Lighting highlight the vanity area, and a large mirror reflects the light throughout the room.
“The tub was the very first thing selected for the house ... and it became the jumpingoff point for more natural, organic-type materials,” recalls McDaniel.

“We wanted to preserve as many of the oak trees as possible, so we walked the site with the clients, looking for the best location for the house that would achieve that goal,” states Hicks. Outdoor Living: Porcelain pavers from Design Works surround the pool and continue into this outdoor living section. The pavers themselves hide fossils, visible with a bit of searching, and the cypress ceiling detail provides the organic feel of wood to the space. “There are a series of focal points that were important,” says Andrea of several features of the outdoor living space, “and make the rear yard area an extension of the home.” The same stacked ledgestone used on the exterior repeats on the outdoor gas fireplace, giving the front and back a pleasant symmetry. A large Century Furniture sectional in slate-blue fabric picks up the blue tones of the stone, and a cluster of tables allows guests to rearrange them easily according to their needs. The side chair’s woven texture adds another organic element, and the entire space flows to the interior through the ninety-degree slider opening.

Pool: “One drawback of all the oak trees surrounding the house is the debris they drop. It was important to create the screen enclosure so there wouldn’t be so much maintenance when that happens,” notes Hicks. The pool sports “an architectural design style, complete with an elevated spa, waterfalls on four sides, and a raised chaise-shelf water feature that acts as a focal point from the front door,” adds Andrea.

CONTEMPORARY COZY HAVEN ORGANIC TEXTURES HARMONIZE WITH CUSTOM LIGHTING IN A STUNNING PELICAN BAY HOME 220

Front Elevation: The low-slung profile and light color of the stucco on this home’s exterior give it a coveted Key West–style feel, enhanced by the silver color choice for the metal roof. “A metal roof isn’t typically a contemporarystyle feature, but the lighter color adds some different character and makes the house stand out in the neighborhood,” Parker Borelli of Borelli Construction of Naples notes. “The home’s energy efficiency is better with a lighter color, too.” A see-through glass-and-iron door brings light into the entryway.
Foyer: Originally, the foyer was dark and cave-like, with soaring ceilings that detracted from the space’s visual appeal. Faith Ashley with Clive Daniel Home created a drop ceiling to accommodate a stunning custom light fixture. “Creating the triple-decker ceiling was a highlight of this project for me. Everything was over scaled, and the drop ceiling, oversized mirror, and chandelier lighting made it more approachable,” she explains. “The architectural features bring the eye down to the ground and away from focusing on the high ceilings.”

Living Room: The open living room, which is anchored by a rounded seating group, features a wood-clad vaulted ceiling, adding a soft organic coziness to the space. “Round is a great shape to create a unique conversation area and seat a lot of people for entertaining,” Ashley comments. “It’s also great to snuggle up in, which helped create the cozy feeling I was after.” The rug creates design continuity by incorporating colors from the home’s artwork.

When the homeowners of this Pelican Bay retreat decided to spend more time in Florida, they knew their vacation home required an update to meet their needs. They naturally looked to the team of Faith Ashley with Clive Daniel Home and Parker Borelli of Borelli Construction of Naples to help them craft contemporary, cozy interior and exterior spaces they could enjoy for many years. The clients had worked with Ashley on a previous project and knew she would deliver the mix of creative thinking and meticulous details that would elevate their remodel beyond ordinary. Extensive hands-on cooperation between Ashley, the owners, and Borelli — and precise communication every step of the way — was key to the successful design development. “The trust factor was already there from the previous work we’d done together,” Ashley notes. “I sketched out concepts and used inspiration photos to help my clients visualize my ideas, and that prior relationship really helped them embrace the design.” u homeanddesign.net

Kitchen Vignette: Thermador appliances and gold-finish fixtures shine beneath another wood-lined coffered ceiling. A touch of wood wrapping the custom range hood brings warmth to the clean white walls and cabinets. The white oak Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring sourced from Naples Flooring Company gives symmetry to the overall coziness of the otherwise understated kitchen. Black lower cabinets add depth and solidity to the design, drawing the eye down. Kitchen: A fifteen-foot-long island in the kitchen takes center stage with its size and color — Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore. The waterfall-edge countertops are white quartz, reflecting the crisp white cabinetry. Ashley deliberately planned the contrasting colors plus the accessories to create a contemporary feel for the room. “We chose over-scaled pieces of coral to accessorize the top of the cabinets, giving the room a very sparing coastal touch,” Ashley says. Dining Room: A certified lighting designer, Ashley created a statement lighting fixture to enliven the dining room. The piece combines two ET2 Lighting fixtures into one and boasts fiftyfour individual pieces of glass staggered at different heights. “It really makes the room,” Ashley adds. The fixture hangs over a table of Italian marble surrounded by posh Woodbridge Furniture chairs in smoked white leather. A pair of the clients’ antiqued mirrors reflect light from the fixture around the room.
Borelli agrees, “It was great collaborating with Faith. She’s very creative and came up with good ideas, like the unique ceiling design in the foyer. She also went to great lengths to help us bring her visions to life, such as laying out her intricate lighting designs on the ground, so our installers understood what went where.” “The clients wanted everything in the house to be done the right way and uniquely styled,” Borelli continues, “and they were willing to go to extra lengths to do that. For example, the bathroom and pantry floors were custom designed and made to fit the rooms, and the tile was imported from Italy.” The team took extraordinary measures to achieve Ashley’s design vision, including building a drop ceiling in the foyer, hiring a master craftsman to install a sculptural wave wall in the primary bathroom, and adding reinforcing steel rods to the attic trusses to support a light fixture. u

No detail was too painstaking, and that extended to the exterior as well, which was clad in stucco with a unique texture. “It’s steel-troweled to give it a smooth, modern finish,” explains Borelli. “It’s a long process with a lot of steps, such as sifting all the sand for the stucco by hand. But it’s worth it for that unique look.” The one-of-a-kind design is a perfect blend of contemporary and traditional styles: simple mouldings paired with organic wood accents, black iron finishes complemented by shining golds and brasses, modern art juxtaposed with sparkling chandeliers, all harmonized by an expansive floor plan and clever structural elements. These details set the home apart from others in the neighborhood and give it a custom feel that’s highly sought after in the area. n
Primary Bedroom & Primary Bedroom Entry Hall: A quartzite chandelier hanging from wooden beams in the primary bedroom is the star of the space. Steel rods were added to the attic trusses to support the 145-pound weight of the fixture. The nightstand handles are also quartz, their edges gilded in silver. More of Hamilton Aguiar’s art — collected by the clients, who have a special fondness for his work — graces the hallway leading to the room and welcomes them into their sanctuary. Primary Bathroom: Five teardrop-shaped crystal LED fixtures hang over the vanity in the primary bathroom, giving energy-efficient light. The mirror reflects an ocean-blue drop pendant chandelier from Arteriors. “Everything in the room is white except for the chandelier in teal blown glass,” Ashley says, also noting that the neutral tones make the pop of color stand out. In the shower, a marble mosaic from Ruben Sorhegui Tile set in a herringbone pattern echoes the geometric shape and gray-and-white tones from the Italian marble tile inset on the floor, which adds elegance and dimension for a striking result. Sleek, modern white marble tile on the rest of the shower walls provides a soothing counterbalance to the mosaic.

“The clients wanted everything in the house to be done the right way and uniquely styled,” Borelli says, “and they were willing to go to extra lengths to do that.”
Pool: The pool itself was designed to be very long, allowing the client to swim laps at home. Tiled in porcelain, the bottom of the pool is finished in a darker custom color, making it seem deeper than it is, while the sun shelf at the waterline creates the perception that the lounge chairs and umbrella pole are floating. A screened lanai allows the homeowners year-round use of this luxurious outdoor recreation area.
Guest Bathroom: The guest bathroom shower’s heavily veined, large-format wall tile from Ruben Sorhegui Tile introduces the wood tones from the accent wall in the adjacent guest bedroom, adding natural warmth to the marble. The polished finish adds a touch of glam by reflecting the room’s lighting. The dimensional patterning and clever use of the same warm colors give the geometric floor tile an optical illusion of threedimensional depth.
Guest Bedroom: A floor-to-ceiling custom wood accent wall installed by master craftsman Frank Zamarripa gives focus to this room. “My client sent an inspiration photo of what she envisioned for the guest bedroom — however, the apronslatted wall treatment was in a teak finish. I explained the wood slats would have to be painted for a more elegant result,” Ashley adds about the client-designer collaboration that generated the final look. The nightstands and desk mimic the pearlized taupe finish.

Outdoor Living: The outdoor living area was designed to be as homey and natural as the interior. A cypress-driftwood accent behind the television and fireplace extends up the wall and over the entire space to finally land as the backsplash for the outdoor kitchen on the other side. The cement-topped table brings a whisper of contemporary practicality, and durable teak chairs upholstered in outdoor-friendly fabric create a cozy seating group. Agateslice side tables serve up more organic shapes.

TRANSFORMING TUSCAN
AN EARLY 2000s GREY OAKS HOME IS ELEVATED INTO A MODERN-DAY STUNNER
homeanddesign.net
243
It’s a style that Adriene Ged, Director of Interior Design at EDGE, a Diamond Custom Homes sister company, dubbed “Med Mod.”
Front Exterior: Keeping with Ged’s moniker of “Med Mod” for the home, the exterior retains the Mediterranean style thanks to the existing red barrel tile roof and brick paver driveway, which extends to the hidden garage entrance — with garage doors sourced through Mo Better Garage Doors. The Mod comes from the removal of heavy ornamentation for a sleek finish. The windows by Andersen Windows & Doors, sourced through Florida Wood Window & Door, effortlessly bring the outdoors in.

Location is everything in real estate, and when these homeowners found a Grey Oaks home with its proximity to the beach and downtown Naples, they knew they had to have it even if it didn’t suit their personal aesthetic. Enter the pros from Diamond Custom Homes, who transformed the dated Tuscan — with heavy ornamentation and traditional styling — into an open floor plan, sophisticated yet casual, contemporary gem. It’s a style that Adriene Ged, Director of Interior Design at EDGE, a Diamond Custom Homes sister company, dubbed “Med Mod.” “He was searching for a modern look without going into the extreme so it wouldn’t look out of place according to the neighborhood and the community,” says Karen Velasco-Carter, Director of Architectural Services for Diamond Custom Homes. “And he was looking for an interior design layout with an open floor plan and better use of the main living areas.” As Velasco-Carter started on the architectural plans, Ged joined in the process. “I would say one benefit of our business model over other builders and designers in the area is that we are all in-house, and we all collaborate from the beginning,” Ged explains. u
Foyer & Living Room: Once the entire main living space was opened up, the expansive flat ceiling would not do. So, the design team created a beamed ceiling treatment for the great room to provide some architectural detailing without it being too formal. The husband is an avid sports fan, so the built-in TV wall is a focal point for the room.
homeanddesign.net
245
To ensure the exterior didn’t look out of place in the community, the design team elected to retain the tile roof and stone driveway while eliminating some of the ornate baroque detailing. Inside, the team worked its magic eliminating all traces of the Tuscan influence — including a bevy of archways — and reimagining the floor plan to suit the lifestyle of the family with an adolescent daughter and a small dog, while also catering to adult entertaining and socializing. u
Wine Bar: “This client is a wine connoisseur of sorts,” Velasco-Carter says. “We knew he was going to need a place for wine storage. We wanted to make it useful but a fun and architecturally interesting space as well.” Crisp black cabinetry, floor-to-ceiling glass doors to the wine storage space — from Builders Glass of Bonita — and a heavy porcelain slab waterfall countertop give the bar area a modern, refined look. At the same time, the walnut face on the island brings warmth and creates a connection to the adjoining kitchen.
Dining Room: “Since our client likes to entertain and to have a space for wine and a space for sitting, we decided that the best way to design that space was creating a bar area and a wine cooler next to it,” VelascoCarter says. “All these spaces are in close proximity to the outdoor living area too.” The windows and sliding window wall enhance the connection to the outdoor space.
246
homeanddesign.net
Kitchen: The kitchen is a sleek but still warm space with custom cabinetry designed by EDGE. Most of the appliances from Fuse Specialty Appliances are hidden by paneled doors. A fresh take on drum-style pendant light fixtures from Lighting First add a touch of black, which is an anchoring color throughout the home. “The other important thing to note is that this home doesn’t have a traditional walk-in pantry,” Ged says. “We incorporated oversized pantry cabinets with custom walnut pullouts inside on the refrigerator wall to make it feel as though the traditional pantry is not missing at all.” The white oak Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring from Naples Flooring Company flows throughout the main living areas and creates a connectedness between the individual spaces.
Living Room: The furniture and fabric selections are family- and pet-friendly throughout the home, including all of the pillows, the rug, and upholstery on the chairs in the living room. “Because we weren’t working with a lot of color in the overall design, we intentionally incorporated various textures in different materials and fabrics throughout the space,” Ged says.

Primary Bedroom: To create a feature wall at the headboard of the bed, the designers specified a textured vinyl wallpaper by Innovations flanked by floor-to-ceiling mirrors. They opted for mirror-mounted wall sconces with drum-style shades instead of traditional bedside lamps. The rug brings the room’s palette into focus tying together the neutral tones.
Primary Bathroom: The original primary bathroom was underwhelming and small. The solution was to repurpose a home office to create a large, light-filled bathroom with double vanities, ample storage, and a serene soaking tub inside a large wet room. Warm, textured wallpaper, richly veined natural stone countertops, and shiny polished chrome fixtures bring elegance to the space. Tile flooring from Wayne Wiles Floor Coverings includes delicate basketweave inset sections for visual interest.

The new design eschews a formal dining room in favor of a transitional space that serves as a secondary living room, office, and guest room. Today’s design harnesses the large space between the kitchen and the outdoor living area to create zones — including the dining area and a wine bar with a glassenclosed wine room — that are all interconnected for seamless entertaining. The adjoining living room offers comfortable seating for a large group with kid- and pet-friendly furnishings and fabrics. u
Powder Bathroom: The powder bathroom has a “dark, moody, sexy vibe,” according to Ged. Heavy crystal light fixtures hang from the ceiling while backlighting peeks from behind the custom mirror and under the dark cabinetry. The look is complete with dark manufactured quartz countertops, a modern black vessel sink by Stone Forest, and a Gessi faucet.
Flex Room: Once a formal dining room, this space is reconfigured to better suit the homeowners’ lifestyle. They wanted an additional space for watching television and to function as an extra guest room when needed. The feature wall in contrasting woods includes a writing desk and open shelving to display the homeowners’ books and decorative pottery items. Guests can use drawers to keep the space clutter-free.

The fresh floor plan for the 5,562-square-foot home includes a primary suite with an adjoining home gym and ample bathroom space to accommodate double vanities, a freestanding tub, and a shower. The daughter’s bedroom, a guest bedroom, and a total of four and a half bathrooms, with one for pool access, round out the living space. “I think the biggest win for all of us as a company, in this case, was incorporating the old with the new and still making it work,” Ged says. “The homeowners had to trust us because they were new at this. They had done new builds in the past but not a full renovation incorporating two drastically different design styles. I think they were pleasantly surprised with the outcome.” n
Daughter’s Bedroom: “We wanted to create a fun teen space for the daughter’s bedroom,” Ged says. “Obviously, we didn’t want it to be too formal, but we didn’t want to speak little girl here.” They created a coastal California look with a warm palette replete with texture and natural materials.
Pool Bathroom: Despite its black-and-white palette, a small bathroom serving the pool area is rich with movement and life. The wallpaper by Coordonné in a watercolor design conjures the feeling of motion with its free-flowing style. A sleek bath console sink by Nameek’s keeps the petite space light and airy.

Outdoor Living: Creating a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience is a top priority when designing a home in Naples. Despite the limited space available, the design effectively utilized a square island to accommodate more people, plus an outdoor living area with luxury furniture from Four Hands and Summer Classics. The motorized insect and solar screens were installed by Castle Services of Southwest Florida.
Pool: “The original pool was sunken, so you had stairs to go down to it,” Velasco-Carter explains. “We raised the entire area to be the same level as the outdoor living area.” The renovation has made the entire area more spacious and secure for homeowners and visitors. Moreover, they’ve updated the pool’s design to feature a waterfall edge.

From the moment you approach the home on the elegantly curved drive, you’re met with its coastal appeal with a slightly contemporary edge. The exterior is stucco with horizontal expansion joints that create a sleek, updated look. “The original design called for a stucco shiplap exterior on it, and it was changed to the stucco with the expansion joints,” Builder Bradley Wells explains. “Personally, I like the look of incorporating the expansion joints into the design. It gives the house a more modern look.”
Great Room (Previous Spread): The great room offers ample seating with a Bernhardt sofa dotted with pillows covered in fabrics from Kravet and Gianti Fabrics, plus four Wesley Hall upholstered chairs detailed with a polished silver buckle detail. A pair of matching cocktail tables by Lexington and a tone-on-tone textured area rug anchor the space. The feature wall showcases a polished pearl-tone stone surrounding the 74-inch linear fireplace flanked by niches with a luminescent pearl-toned wood veneer wallcovering in a subtle chevron motif with silver accents. “All the detail — the beams in the kitchen, the beams in the living room, the cabinetry colors, and that fireplace wall — it all ties it together to create a big wow,” Builder Bradley Wells says.

Speculative homes, by nature, have a certain degree of risk, but the ante was particularly high on this Pine Ridge Estates property. Developer Amy Turner trusted that by investing in the highest quality design and materials, she’d achieve a big payout. But more than that, a family would gain a luxury property with all the touches of a truly custom home to call its own. To attain such a feat, Turner knew she’d need to assemble a top-notch team that would provide valuable insight as well as quality design and building services. Architect Frank Comeriato in Naples, Florida created the architectural plans. Turner selected award-winning Vogue Interior Design for its nearly 45 years of experience. Vice President Debbie Demaria, ASID, IDS, and Licensed Interior Designer Christie Heeb worked in tandem on the project. “It was such a delight working with Christie Heeb and Debbie DeMaria at Vogue Interiors,” Turner says. “The quality of their choices was impeccable — they knew exactly what I was looking for when it came to first-class design. They also knew how to make the process enjoyable every step of the way.” u
Entry: “Upon entering the home, there is a two-tier waterfall glass and silver chandelier by Varaluz,” Interior Designer Christie Heeb of Vogue Interior Design explains. A three-drawer console table with midcentury styling topped with a large round mirror sits on one wall. It reflects an impressionistic seascape mural in soft blue tones. The streamlined millwork and ceiling detailing are reflective of the modern-meets-traditional design style echoed throughout the home. The white oak flooring sets the tone for the soft palette.

Kitchen: The kitchen is designed for the most discriminating chef and one who loves to gather with family members and friends. Upper cabinets with glass fronts include a contrasting taupe-toned back panel, and the backsplash is a luxurious white marble and mother-of-pearl geometric design. The custom-designed range hood by François & Co. features a polished zinc body with a horizontal band and rivets in zinc with a mirror finish. There are two large islands with six-centimeter edge Cristallo countertops, and the appliances are from Fuse Specialty Appliances. In keeping with the designers’ intention to create a kitchen design conducive to entertaining, the floor plan includes an adjacent spacious service pantry. 268

The designers came up with a plan to accentuate that this property is an estate with a spacious lot and outdoor living area, which showcases their dedication to the Southwest Florida way of life. “One of the goals of the developer was to provide gathering and entertainment areas on a grand scale,” says Heeb. “So, we were very responsive to the request in our design selections.” The design style sits firmly at the intersection of traditional and contemporary and sports a beautiful palette of soft taupe with cream, champagne, and oceanic blue accents that complement the neutrals and white oak flooring throughout. “Amy was very involved in the decision-making process, and those projects are the ones that turn out the best — where it’s a team effort,” Heeb says. “And, of course, Debbie and I worked as a team. She generally prefers to design with neutrals, and I love color, so the interior design reflects the perfect compromise that we achieved with a calm, neutral background with pops of accent color.” u
Dining Room: The dramatic dining room features a Vanguard rectangular wood table with a pearlized-taupe top and a polished stainless-steel base. The eight dining chairs — also from Vanguard — are wrapped in champagne performance fabric with a taupe-colored horizontal top detail and taupe-stained wooden frames. The dramatic chandelier by Varaluz is a collection of cascading glass rods. The stunning wine bar spans one wall in the dining room. “It includes a dramatic, exotic cream and umber stone countertop, which we chose for the dramatic effect and how it creates a sense of undulating movement,” Heeb says. Two wine towers flank the window overlooking the home’s courtyard.

Builder Bradley Wells rounded out the team and oversaw the entire construction process. “From my perspective, you don’t see a lot of spec houses that are done to this level of custom finish,” he says. “You don’t see many spec houses with Cristallo countertops, the oversized stained wooden beams, the stained tongue-and-groove wooden ceilings on the exterior, and the many other luxury details this home features.” u
Primary Bedroom: “We wanted this space to be relaxing and tranquil — like a retreat getaway,” Heeb says. The design team chose a calming, soothing palette to achieve the aesthetic. Beams draw the eye upward and contrast with the delicate chevron pattern of the wood ceiling. The custom, fully upholstered bed sits across the room from an impressive 126-inch, three-piece dresser from Lexington. A casual sitting area includes two swivel chairs, an ottoman, and a side table with an onyx top on a champagne metal base. The champagne finish is reflected in a pair of matching Corbett Lighting fixtures in the room — one directly over the seating area — that appear to have the delicate circular movement of ribbons of soft metal.

Primary Bedroom Hallway: No space in this home was left wanting, including the vestibule leading to the primary bedroom and bathroom. The design team selected a graceful decorative chest by Caracole with a soft metallic champagne and taupe finish for the focal wall as you enter the area. It’s accessorized with a freeform art glass lamp with a marble base from JohnRichard. An alluring luminescent abstract painting is mounted above the chest.
Primary Bathroom: Continuing the retreat theme, the primary bathroom is a serene, spa-like space with an oval-shaped soaking tub from Maidstone Supply, a walk-in shower, double vanities, double water closets, and polished nickel designer fixtures from Brizo. The walls are a collection of impressionistic taupe and pearl wallcovering, luxury tile, and a mother-of-pearl capiz mosaic behind the bathtub. Taj Mahal stone countertops rest on high-gloss vanities, including a makeup area with a textured cream upholstered seat with a nickel frame. The counter-to-ceiling mirrors boast sconces from Modern Forms.

In addition to the opulent finishes, spectacular outdoor living spaces, high-quality furnishings for a turnkey sale, and best-in-class construction, the home leaves no luxury stone unturned with its Lutron control system, hidden heating and cooling vents, and an oversized service pantry to make this an ultimate entertaining home. And the attention to detail paid off in a nearly $9 million sale price. Risk averted. n
“The quality of their choices was impeccable — they knew exactly what I was looking for when it came to first-class design. They also knew how to make the process enjoyable every step of the way,” Turner states.
Hallway: The hallway directly views the large service pantry just off the kitchen. The pantry features a custom barn door with stainless steel hardware. The three-panel wooden door includes custom rain-glass insets to provide privacy while allowing light into the space. Across the hall from a bank of floor-to-ceiling windows hangs an abstract art triptych selected by the design team for its soft color palette and visual interest.
Powder Room: Naples’ legendary coastal lifestyle inspired the tranquil elegance of the powder room design from its Wolf-Gordon textured wallcovering reminiscent of crushed pearlized shells. “The custom-designed wall-mounted floating vanity has a multilayer metallic starlight finish on the three-dimensional horizontal wave doors,” Heeb explains. “Inspiration was derived from our coastal living.” The countertop is an exotic Taj Mahal stone with a leather finish, and the Native Trails freeform vessel sink has a luminous and abalone shell patina.

Guest Bedroom: To ensure guest comfort, this executive suite is designed to be a relaxing, inviting, serene, and calming space with luxe touches, including the unique bed from Universal Furniture with upholstered channels and a polished nickel frame. The designers selected a soft blue to keep the palette light and spa-like. The plush rug and adjoining bathroom provide the ultimate in privacy and comfort, while the large windows flanking the bed allow plenty of light and beautiful views of the property.
Guest Bathroom: It was essential to give each of the five-and-onehalf bathrooms their own unique design aesthetic. Here, the design team selected a striking textural wallpaper in a bronze finish from York Wallcoverings. An iridescent mosaic tile in similar bronze tones encircles the walk-in shower with a glass surround. The movement in the striated countertop lends an organic feel to the space, while the crystalline-effect light fixture adds a touch of glam.

In addition to the workspace, it includes a seating area with two armchairs from Lexington Furniture in a textured Chanel Pearl upholstery. The seating area is anchored by a chevronpatterned hair-on-hide rug from Surya. Outdoor Living: The outdoor living area is the heart of the Naples lifestyle the developer and designers set out to capture in this luxury speculative home. The area encompasses a living room, dining area, bar, and an outdoor kitchen. The living area includes a stunning feature wall with a fireplace, while the dining area and outdoor bar offer the ultimate entertaining space. “The fact that you’ve got so much space to be able to cook and entertain — you can have people in the living room, in the dining room, the kitchen, and the huge lanai — and you can open the oversized Andersen Windows & Doors bifold doors to bring everyone together in one massive room,” Wells says, “makes this the perfect house if you enjoy entertaining and hosting parties and events.”

Living Room: The bright cobalt and the artwork are the impetus for matching bookshelves, the bar’s Cristallo blue quartzite, and the colorful Century fabric of accent pillows which also introduce vibrant fuchsia and tangerine. Crisp white — in the performance upholstery of the Vanguard Furniture sofa, armchairs, and a floating custom TV console against a shiplap wall — allows the blue hue to have its moment. Guild substitutes a traditional coffee table for two leather-like ottomans featuring “bridges” as multifunctional tables.

COASTAL LIVING IN BLUE
T
THE GULF INSPIRES BOLD COASTAL DESIGN DETAILS
The whole-home renovation of a Naples condo reveals how the finer details in design define the big picture, creating an ineffable aesthetic that’s more visceral than visual. Informed by the Gulf of Mexico’s ever-changing blues, the design whispers its coastal intentions subtly — sea spray nuanced in glass bubbles cascading from a chandelier, wood flooring the color of sand, patterns echoing the ripples of water and beach shores. It also unabashedly proclaims its intrinsic connection to the coast — hello, cobalt blue! “Water plays an important part in this remodel,” says Lisa Guild, Interior Designer and Principal of LMG Design Consulting, who guided the down-to-the-studs project, including space planning and interior design. “My clients wanted an upscale coastal look that’s not so literal in its interpretation. This gorgeous blue is front and center.” u
Entry: “The flooring has a great grain, and laying it on the diagonal creates a unique shape,” interior designer Lisa Guild says of the wide-planked, sand-hued white oak from Hadinger Flooring. The cerused white inlays frame it in the foyer. An oiled finish reduces sheen and adds texture, complementing the organic qualities of the stone-topped console and a wispy lamp. A custom cobalt-cloaked bench punches up the intensity of the more subdued shades in the artwork.

Living Room: Reeded grasscloth behind the bookshelves and a collection of large corals — one tinged in deep magenta — interject natural texture while referencing the condo’s coastal style. Guild’s exacting precision is imperceptible, inherently experienced in the cohesiveness and powerful yet intimate spatial arrangement. Armchairs align with the outer edges of the new built-out wall, ottoman-topping bridges replicate the size of foyer floor inlays, and the console illuminated by a changing palette of colorful lighting balances the scope of the sofa.
The homeowners didn’t have to look far to find their muse after purchasing a larger condo in their building. Guild, who had already redesigned many of their neighbors’ homes, was well aware of the renovation possibilities. For this renovation, Guild and Design Consultant Casey O’Brien further elevated the condo’s spaciousness through creative space planning and replacing windows with larger expanses of glass. “The condo was really cut up with lots of small rooms,” Guild recalls. “Now it lives very large.” u

Bar: Splurge-worthy Cristallo blue quartzite on the bar’s backsplash and countertop is back-lit, creating an eyecatching ethereal glow. “The custom slabs informed everything else which is quiet so the quartz can do the talking,” exclaims Guild. Fashioned from a closet, the bar’s cabinetry houses refrigerator drawers and provides convenient pullout shelves for bottle storage, and barware is displayed in glass-door fronts with glass shelves above.

A former closet, notes O’Brien, was also reimagined as a statement-making bar. The bar is the ultimate closet transformation, its lit-from-within quartzite illustrating “the impact of spending more on details that make the most impact,” states Guild. Inspired Closets crafted the redesigned closets. One look at the new clients’ personal art collection told Guild they were not color shy. Vivid cobalt, tangerine, coral, and scarlet splashed across paintings, inspiring custom-made bookshelves, fabric and tile selections, and exotic seldom-seen Cristallo blue quartzite. “We like color, and we like to add color in all projects,” explains Guild. “We always try to help clients introduce more color in different spaces with different ideas, so it’s cohesive but not too matchy. These clients have great art, and cobalt was already represented in their collection. It provided a jumping off point.” u
Dining Room: “The art in the dining room is displayed prominently,” explains Guild. “It’s a very important piece and important to the clients.” Its brilliant blues echo views inside and out. The designer lends a subtle coastal style to the chandeliers with glass bubbles reminiscent of sea spray, and to the simple details of the ceiling’s floating beams and white shiplap. The clients’ cracked glass-topped table with an unexpected chrome base is surrounded by new chairs from Vanguard Furniture, upholstered in white and royal blue.
Kitchen: Guild and O’Brien renovated the kitchen to maximize storage and openness without sacrificing Gulf vistas. The mission was achieved by installing wall ovens, extending cabinets to the ceiling, relocating the cooktop to a large center island, and omitting pendant lights that hinder the view. The island’s cantilevered Mysterio white quartz countertop is accompanied by acrylic and vinyl stools, creating a cozy atmosphere. According to Guild, the custom blended matte glass backsplash in sea glass tones is a prime example of investing money for maximum impact.

Bold brushstrokes of cobalt appear in the living room’s custom-designed bookshelves and accent pillow fabrics, introducing and foreshadowing vibrant fuchsias and tangerines used in various iterations throughout the three-bedroom home. The playful beach ball-inspired upholstery colors, nightstands dipped in coral, a denim-finished bathroom vanity, and pale sea glass tones add varying intensities. u
“The condo was really cut up with lots of small rooms,” Guild recalls. “Now it lives very large.”

Guest Bathroom: Extending the geometric white, blue, and blue-gray mosaic marble flooring to a full wall above the vanity shows how spending more in smaller doses elevates a room. Lighting under the gray vanity enhances the ambiance, its glow reflected by hammered pulls inset with glass. The shower (not pictured) is clad in Apollo white vertical porcelain mimicking the bright white of the vanity quartz top and finished with a matte gray recycled glass mosaic floor. Details like an opalescent shell box are a “metaphor for water and sea life,” exclaims Guild.
Primary Bedroom: The color cobalt briefly shows up in the vivid strokes of the rug in the primary bedroom before gracefully blending with the subdued sandy hues, soft sea glass blues, and silver tones of the bedding. The wallpaper also adds a subtle iridescent sheen with its crinkled texture. “The clients wanted a more formal space,” notes Guild. The Vanguard Furniture night tables are adorned with agate pulls that feature subtle dark and light blue hints. A pelican portrait from the client’s collection proudly hangs above the desk as the centerpiece.

The crisp whites of upholstered furniture, the finish of a floating TV console, kitchen cabinetry, shiplap walls, and ceilings sing, conveying a crystalline countenance against the cobalt. Formerly flat ceilings were dropped, stepped, and adorned with beams, shiplap, and ambient lighting to create architectural interest. Water takes on many different moods and hues, expressing itself in gradients of blues. In all its vivid glory, the Gulf of Mexico — displayed throughout the renovated condo in Naples — reveals its true blue, magnificent cobalt, and is a catalyst for this interior palette. n
Guest Bathroom: The bold whites of the quartz countertop, porcelain tile flooring, and smoked mirror pulls complement the denim paint of the underlit floating vanity. The vintage denim look is emulated in the 3D textured glass subway tile framing the vanity’s inlaid mirror, which is also repeated in the decorative Listello bands of the shower. “My design philosophy is to achieve the best use of materials without overspending, using a high-low approach,” says Guild.
Guest Bedroom: The condo’s second guest room features restful shades of blue and aqua, and the bedding hints to jewelry-toned versions of water underscored with rich navy. Accent pillows take their cues from the kitchen’s sea glass tile, alluding to shells, while the reeded chevron pattern of the Braxton Culler headboard adds texture. The soft water ripples of the area rug are reflected in the glass tops of the nightstands and lighting, creating a cohesive aesthetic with shades of aqua.

Guest Bedroom: This guest room is designed explicitly for visiting grandchildren and is decorated with splashes of color and stripes in muted shades of fuchsia, tangerine, and cobalt. “The fabric of pillows on the two navy blue twin beds and an upholstered chair is a playful nod to a beach ball,” explains O’Brien. Coral woven bedside tables represent the hue of the primary bedroom’s pelican art. A beautiful lapis blue shell lamp, cabanastriped seagrass-look rug, and accessories from International Design Source embellish the coastal ambiance.

ISLES OF CAPRI

To add texture, the primary suite features a focal caned bed paired with a sisal and wool area rug. Ample storage is provided with a driftwood nightstand and dresser, while the headboard wall is highlighted with faux bois wallcovering, jewel-like gold, and glass lamps to enhance the overall look. In the primary bath, a porcelain slab serves as a countertop and shower bench and cascades down the shower wall. The shower, once cave-like, is now a tranquil retreat. The guest room features wicker beds, a shiplap headboard, and nautical bedding. The linen-wrapped nightstand, beaded lamp, and rug contribute to the overall textural appeal.

transforms a classic design into modern luxury using contemporary forms and luxe finishes, with touches of transitional details reflected in the primary bathroom’s beautiful drapery panels and cabinetry details. Bergmann used soft neutrals and light champagnes with an added touch of blue to bring in the colors of the Gulf and add some tranquility to the space. The family that tapped Dwayne Bergmann for the renovation wanted a beautiful, luxurious space for their primary suite that accentuated their gorgeous Gulf view. LMG DESIGN CONSULTING For this home, we covered the existing stone fireplace with wood tile and Emperador dark-honed marble. The result is a cozy and textured centerpiece for the living room. To further enhance the ambiance, we added art, sculptures, and mood lighting to the area. The dining room was transformed into a stunning space by adding a beautiful copper ceiling, sophisticated inky blue touches, a magnificent Crystallo chandelier, and a live edge table surrounded by mid-century modern chairs with burnished gold frames. Custom art, lighting, and sculptures were also incorporated into the room to enhance its overall appeal.

This study went from old school, dated, and boring to a book-lined, whiskey haven. The client wanted a space to retreat to where they felt warm, comfortable, and enveloped. The walls were clad in trim and bookshelves — floor to ceiling — painted in ink blue. Copper, chocolate suede, burnished gold, and a large-scale print applied to the ceiling added an air of soulful sophistication. Andrea Pohl, from Naples Kitchen & Bath, designed a transitional-style home in Olde Cypress. She collaborated with the homeowner, who had a clear vision for the project. The main goal was to open the kitchen and family room, creating a brighter space. To achieve this, Andrea removed a wall between the kitchen and dining area, chose lighter cabinetry, and applied a fresh coat of paint. She knew dark walls and cabinets could absorb light, which was not ideal for this single-family home with limited natural light. In addition, Andrea removed the recessed ceilings and replaced them with flush ceilings. She also installed a new lighting package with a 3000k temperature throughout the kitchen and family room to further brighten the space. The kitchen was designed for lots of cooking. Replacing the kitchen hood and installing sconce lighting next to it was difficult because the previous hood was not vented outside. The challenge was overcome by drilling a hole through the wall, a complex process. A micro-recirculating vent system was used. The kitchen features Crystal cabinetry, Hampstead doors in white satin and hickory sand, and a pewter highlight. The island not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the room by complementing the cabinetry, but also provides ample storage space. Its Blue Roma Quartzite countertop imported from Italy adds a unique touch of elegance. The kitchen appliances are all from Thermador, with the induction flush cooktop being the standout feature.

Greenfield cabinetry has brightened the bathroom, creating a fresh and airy atmosphere. The linen closet was removed to make more space for vanities and additional cabinetry with mirrored doors and decorative sconces. The mosaic inset on the flooring is stunning and complements the shower’s accent wall. Overall, the bathroom looks beautiful and spacious.
