J

Jon MacDonough spent his teenage years in New England,

falling in love with historical homes and eventually restoring many of them. “While working on 200-year old houses, I became very interested

in the history of the homes and the architecture. I enjoyed the work involved with preserving the bricks, beams, wooden plank floors and all the other period details that gave the historical homes their charm,” recalls MacDonough, now the principal of KJIMS Homes in Naples, Florida. u

Left: A stunning entrance, the living room s ten-foot glass doors allow light to softly spill onto the custom Legno Bastone wide plank flooring installed throughout the home by Naples Flooring ompany. Legno Bastone created the handcrafted finish

that uses artisan skills and traditional methods, notes Tiffany Guido of Legno Bastone in Naples. The flooring is from our Dolce Vita

ollection with a width of 1 ¼-inches. There are multiple

processes to create this e

When he got involved with a team designing a spec home to be built on a secluded lakeside lot on South Lake Drive in Old Naples, MacDonough wanted to include many of the elements he remembered so fondly from his time in New England. u Above: A Torche De Verre round chandelier shines down on a long wooden table with ivory and chrome parson chair-seating for eight. urposely e cluding crown moulding to give the room a clean and contemporary look, K near the ceiling.

MacDonough. “Since our firm is small, I am personally involved from the very beginning and throughout the project in regards to both design and construction. That allows me to be more creative throughout the build process and work with subcontractors for ideas to improve the design. For example, in this home, we decided after collaboration with our pool and landscape contractor, to add three majestic Alexander palms by the poolside. Those are not inexpensive trees, but we all agreed this was needed to add to the home’s ‘wow’ factor.” MacDonough continues, “When I am designing for clients, I meet with them often, determine what their vision is and put together the very best team to fulfill those dreams.”

Creative master Leonardo da Vinci said, “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” and this iconic contemporary estate, set on a 1 ½-acre lot on the highly desirable Naples waterfront, is a present day affirmation of that tenet of design. The owners first identified the idyllic location, then contacted Randy Kurtz of Kurtz Homes Naples who has completed multiple projects for other members of the family. “I met them at the site often in the beginning of the process. They knew what they wanted; to take advantage of the unobstructed, expansive water views and to create an indoor outdoor environment which realized their dream of having a Zen-like atmosphere while maintaining the clean, light, minimalistic elements of the home,” describes Kurtz. u

ooney. A wall of the same Bamboo Veined natural stone used on

the home s e terior further erases the indoor-outdoor boundaries.

“The orientation and the size of the property played a very important role in the evolution of the design,” explains Cooney. “When you walk through this house there is extensive glass on almost every wall in every room, front and back. The goal was to create a very linear floorplan so the rooms could capitalize on morning and afternoon sun in the same room. From an architectural standpoint, the solids and voids that the planes create happen very easily and it is beautiful. The house is a very elaborate design even though it reads very simplistic and minimalistic in form.” u

The owners’ desires were also realized through the use of superior “green” materials and construction quality, as well as Kurtz Homes Naples’ attention to every last detail. “It is not just my business name but my personal name, Kurtz explains. “We take a limited number of jobs so that I and our team—project manager, superintendent, and estimator—are able to maintain the highest level of involvement and stay engaged in all stages of the project. Having a great and continuing relationship with the clients is as important to our team as it is to build a beautiful, quality home.” Cooney concurs, elaborating, “Because of the intricate design, if this home didn’t have the personal attention of the builder it would not show as flawlessly as it does.” u Above: Bassano

As carefully-curated as a museum exhibition, this 8,900-square foot mansion in the prestigious Naples neighborhood of Port Royal is splendid to admire and a convivial ambience in which to reside. It results from meticulous effort by a masterful team led by design/developers John and Karen Melk of JMKM Design. Architects John Cooney and his partner Randall Stofft of Stofft Cooney Architects, and homebuilder Joe Beauchamp of The Williams Group, round out the tried and true team that brought this property to life. u

My challenge was to make sure my design was in keeping with her vision,” says Cooney. Typically, his philosophy is to create classic architecture regardless of style, so according to him, a hybrid of neoclassical and coastal contemporary in not the norm. “In this case, the developer was particularly educated in architecture, so the two styles succeeded in complementing one another,” he assesses. u

The extra care taken by all parties is self-evident. Rich finishes, a deft mix of old and new, pouring love into everything and skimping on nothing—are what make a house feel like a home. “I create to a level of quality where I would want to live there myself,” says Melk, adding, “It’s gratifying when the finished product is so beautiful… and when it sells!” Which recently, it did.

A large, cased opening leading to the sitting area, along with a separate but complementary ceiling detail, delineate the space, making it cozy-feeling yet still very much a part of the bedroom. A tall, upholstered platform bed by Mr. & Mrs. Howard for Sherrill anchors the space, and beneath it, a velvety silk and wool rug from Moattar imbues softness.

Kira wanted to be closer to her clientele and found the perfect location for her new studio on 12th Ave South, just around the corner from Crayton Cove and 3rd Ave, in the heart of Old Naples. “Our new home is a creative haven - it is cozy and full of light, the perfect place for our team to grow,” states Kira. Kira has made a name through her signature “Koastal” aesthetic which carries over in all of her interiors as well as her own personal style. A focus on light neutrals, interesting textures, and elements that blend harmoniously with the surrounding natural environment, are all staples of the designer’s aesthetic philosophy. “Balance and harmony are key to creating environments that bring quality to living. Our interiors are inspired by the beauty of our natural environment and should embody timeless elegance without compromising the casual lifestyle people seek here in Naples. I call our conceptual approach to interiors “livable luxury”. Koastal Design Group’s approach to interior design has found a

It’s nearly impossible to resist the charisma of this 5,800-square-foot residence in The Moorings neighborhood of Naples. Welcoming woods used in abundance, an endless flood of mood-enhancing natural light, tactile fabrics you just want to run your hand over—all of these instill a comfort and coziness not often found in a home this spacious. Shades of creamy alabaster, blues that range from misty to inky, pale platinum, and a pop of periwinkle comprise the amenable palette. “The colorways we chose dance around the overall aesthetic of the house, bringing cheer,” says interior designer Rebekah Errett-Pikosky of Clive Daniel Home who, together with her design partner Charlie Hansen, turned a house into a home for a family with three children. u

Knauf-Koenig Group’s aptitude to let their skills shine in this project is due in part to the vision of architect John Cooney, partner at Stofft Cooney Architecture. “Wonderful ceiling details and millwork packages are throughout every room. The intricate beams, tongue-and-groove ceilings, and detailed wainscoting really define this house,” says Cooney, who intended, and achieved, an equal amount of detail both inside and out. Significant consideration was given to the clients’ goal of creating a home that would grow with them. u

The owner wanted a designer with the ability and interest in custom interior architectural detailing and was referred to Ficarra by one of her previous clients. Collectively they established the look he desired. “He has a wonderful design sense; he gravitates towards more contemporary, architectural designs. He explained that he wanted something different than anything he had seen in Naples.” “Lisa and her team led me through a massive number of decisions in an organized but creative process, listening carefully to my preferences, and then offering recommendations based on a great sense of design and style,” praises the homeowner. u

can result if you allow your imagination to be opened up and you utilize the lot itself,” explains Boyatt. “You literally have to think outside of the box, beyond the traditional square idea of a what a home should be and not limit the possibilities.” Subtle design elements distinguish the home’s interior, such as an inlaid limestone border in the foyer, brushed stainless steel, grass cloth, and various metals. “We began in the living room, designing a custom focal wall with panels of textured concrete as a backdrop for my client’s colorful artwork and a baby grand piano,” describes Ficarra. “I created a floating wood beamed ceiling with metal stanchions in the living room and carried it into the kitchen. The use of wood and natural materials is very important in the design. In the furnishings the owner gravitated toward neutrals, textures, grays, and off whites.” The owner’s personal art collection adds the color and a special uniqueness to the interior design. u

Builder Coleman has worked closely with architect Boyatt for 35 years, building hundreds of homes. He says despite delays from Hurricane Irma, the ease of communication with both Boyatt and Ficarra allowed for the home’s on-time delivery. “Tony is incredibly responsive and Lisa gave us phenomenal plans for her designs. We were able to communicate and execute the detailing throughout the home so well that it was a pleasure to create.” Living Room paintings by Eng Tay, Hunt Slonem, Byron Browne (1907-1961), sculptures by Ruth Bloch, Anita Huffington Master Bedroom paintings by Adolf Dehn (1895-1968), Richard Segalman, sculpture by David Pearson Library paintings by Marty Poole

Nestled on the western edge of Naples’ Audubon Country Club community is a hidden gem—an enclave recently approved for development after being off-limits to protect nesting eagles. The owners of this one-of-a-kind residence selected a pie-shaped lot surrounded by nature preserve and spectacular water views to build their third and largest residence in a community they love. “When these lots became available we decided we would build one more home, with all of our desires and wishes,” note the homeowners. “The team we assembled and the home they created exceeds our expectations.” That masterful team is comprised of architect Joe McHarris, who designed the couple’s previous home, luxury custom builder BCB Homes, and interior designer Sheryl Blake of Blake Design Limited. u

The opportunity for the entire team to work with the homeowners from the preliminary plans through the final interior touches allowed for a seamless, creative design, on-time construction process, and extremely pleased clients. “The process of starting with each other from a blank sheet of paper is so invaluable. A lot of people think it will cost a lot more money to do it that way—it simply doesn’t—it is the only way to get to one-hundred percent satisfaction on a project,” says BCB Homes COO Scott Weidle. The homeowners were so impressed with the company’s hands-on approach that they hired BCB after just one meeting. u

The owners sought out interior design Sheryl Blake after admiring another of her projects. She collaborated with McHarris from the outset on interior structural elements and refining custom ceiling details throughout the home. “I laid out all the ceiling details and Joe put my ceiling detail into the permit set. I was allowed to be very involved in the early details of the layout of the home. Our goal was to make it a soft modern home for entertaining.” u

Also on the wish list for the two-story home—a theater and game room for the grandkids and generous guest suites. The owners note that the team accomplished all of that desires and more, “It was a great experience. We have built two other homes from scratch and done several major remodels. We love the process and this team and Scott from BCB made it exceptionally fun.” Interior designer Blake couldn’t agree more. “This team’s experience and depth of knowledge and enthusiasm collectively made this project enjoyable,” explains Blake, adding, “The homeowners were integral in that collaborative process and the end result is a home that brings them happiness and fulfillment in their daily living environment.”

We put it on paper and it really worked well, adding a unique feature to the family space.”

“Out with the old and in with the new” was the aim of the renovation of this beautiful Naples home in Mediterra. Harwick Homes and Collins & DuPont Design Group teamed up to strip all outdated architectural elements and, making use of the fabulous bones of the structure, reveal the true beauty of this home. “The clients have a young family and use this residence all year round for short trips. They wanted the design to be clean, open and simplified,” says Shane Klepko, vice-president of Harwick Homes. “We were called in by the interior designers, which often happens, as almost all of our remodeling projects enlist talented interior designers. The rest is up to us and we know our role and play our part. It’s an added bonus that we love what we do. Our clients appreciate that we are here not only to build their home, but here decades later when they wish to remodel it. Clients are comfortable with the fact they can call and talk to the same person over the years and we are very glad we have such close and long standing relationships with our clients.” u

Designer Amy Coslet and company president Sherri DuPont of Collins & DuPont Design Group understand a thing or two about longevity themselves. Says Coslet, “We strive to make every design timeless. Instead of following only today’s trends, we fuse them with classical elements to ensure every design is as relevant ten years from now as it is today.” “With that in mind, we approached this project with traditional ideas interpreted through a contemporary lens,” agreed DuPont. “From the color scheme and clean lines of the finishes we chose to the classic and livable furnishings, we believe we achieved the perfect balance of elegance and simplicity.”

As you enter the foyer of this former model home it is evident why it is a project of pride for design duo Diana Hall and Laurie Walter, co-principals of Cinnabar Design in Naples. “This is our favorite home as a team that we have ever done,” says Walter. “I love the overall mood. It is very comfortable and inviting.” Hall continues, “From the minute you walk through the front door it relaxes you. The palette is neutral and calm, and the interiors are grand and gracious, yet down to earth. You feel as if you could come in with sandy feet, and later greet guests for a formal cocktail party.” u

Architect Alberto Abad implores a similar philosophy, “I wanted to create an interior space of privacy and comfort, flooded with natural light, but still connect the home to the outside, the stunning landscaping, lovely pool, and championship golf course just through the home’s glass doors.” The Cinnabar team took Abad’s plan and through the selection of backgrounds and wellplanned details, created an interior space that calls for little embellishment. “Even without any furniture or anything, the backgrounds make this home. That is an unusual design opportunity, to be able to put that much into those selections,” describes Walter. “It like getting dressed for a big event—when you already have the incredible stunning jewelry, no matter what you put on you will look great!” Leger-Wetzel also recognizes this home’s dream design, “This house truly exemplifies the luxury Florida lifestyle with an amazing entertainment space and the beauty of indoor and outdoor living evident throughout the home.”

AQUATIC ALLUSION AN INLAND HOME WITH COASTAL APPEAL www.HomeAndDesign.net

S

Situated within an inland neighborhood in Naples, this home’s references to the ocean, be they subtle or overt, allude to a seaside locale. Nautical motifs appear in the furnishings, fabrics and artwork. And no, none of this is unintentional. “Coastal is the buzzword these days,” acknowledges John Zagar of McGarvey Custom Homes, the builder of this 4,476-square-foot residence as well as numerous others in the Quail West community. Zagar was on-board with the genre of the moment, as long as it didn’t get too “cottage-ey” and instead lent itself more to transitional/contemporary coastal. u

Above: The space that would generally be used as a foyer has been repurposed as an inviting reception parlor. A pair of cushiony Braxton Culler Osborne chairs surrounds a Bernhardt Candide cocktail table which features intricate, open metalwork. The right wall is inset with Phillip Jeffries silk and abaca wallcovering. On the left, a large mirror creates the illusion of expansiveness. A huge picture window, fashioned with draperies cut from Fabricut Bahsora Chevron frames the view of the pool. Colorways of Mediterranean Sea and Aqua Haze hint at the ocean, while the shell prints from Currey & Co. are a more direct reference. Right: The coastal homage continues into the voluminous great room, where darkly-stained driftwood tongue-and-groove with contrasting white beams is applied to the ceiling. A wall unit custom-built from driftwood by Tradewind Designs is backed by Arte Hive wallcovering in Blonde Maple. The ample seating consists of two Taylor King Larsen swivel chairs in lagoon chenille and a Lexington Strada sectional in Plush Nude. Behind the sofa it’s game time, as Lexington’s Ariana armchairs, upholstered in a wavy peacock pattern, flank a Vanguard leather table with nailhead detail. In the foreground, the gray Ava side table generates a ripple effect.

He was resolute in implementing statement water features like bubbling fountains and a reflecting pond, committed to clean lines, and unafraid to let the designer upholster major pieces and paint focal areas in seaside hues of turquoise, teal, and aqua. Before any ground is broken, a concept is born, and so it was residential designer Rich Guzman of R.G. Designs who developed the home’s parameters from the outset. His vision included a “less is more” approach to the exterior, soaring ceilings indoors as allowed by the one-story ranch profile, and an efficient, contemporary layout suited to today’s market. “Any good floor plan still has traditional elements—a kitchen to cook in, a bed to sleep in—but the simplicity of the layout makes it easier to focus on the details,” says Guzman. u

“This

Mitered glass provides necessary separation from the outdoors, so you feel like you’re dining al fresco when in fact, you are cool and comfortable inside. Along with the rest of the team, Guzman prioritized allusions to water. “When there’s no waterfront, we need to create our own by emphasizing the pool, landscaping, and outdoor spaces,” Guzman explains. He thereby oriented the rooms so that most could take advantage of the handcrafted aquatic view. u

Above: The study emphasizes the cohesiveness of the palette, with a bookcase custom made by Tradewind Designs painted Sherwin-Williams’ Grand Canal. It complements a shaped cornice fabricated from Thibaut Daintree Embroidery in Blue Moon. An inspired workplace is created with the inclusion of the sleek, dual trestle Scribner desk by Michael Weiss, paired with the tweed Leighton chair, both from Vanguard. Cyan Design’s adjustable Pixor table lamp in polished nickel brings a utilitarian vibe.

The happy medium between dark and light finishes, the layered effect on the ceilings and elsewhere, and the restrained neutral palette with vibrant pops of color—all of these and more are attributed to interior designer Chrissy Howard and her associate Barbara Schwenk of Jinx McDonald Interior Design. “The coastal elements we incorporated are apparent, but elegant and not too literal,” says Howard. “’Coastal Current’ is the style we derived.”

Above: “I get more comments about the master bath shower than anything else in the house,” notes agar, referring to the gorgeous chevron tilework. A decorative, contemporary floating tub rests in front of the glass shower wall. The cabinets are topped with Fantasy Brown marble. MODERN METAMORPHISIS CAPITALIZING ON AN EXCEPTIONAL LAKEFRONT LOCALE

When an accomplished team of experts was tasked with reimagining this Miromar Lakes’ home and augmenting it to meet present-day standards, there was one thing they all agreed upon: it was perhaps the most desirable property in the area. The original home, built in 2003, was among the first constructed on Miromar’s 700-acre freshwater lake. The new owners envisioned an updated design to better capitalize on the prime location, expansive lot, and spectacular views of Lake Como and the community’s award-winning Beach Clubhouse. “The bones were great, but it was dated,” says interior designer Allison Keevan of Design West. She and her team (which also included Caroline Ficquette, Dominique Coffman and Kelsey Kohler) focused on lightening the space and adjusting its contents to the appropriate scale. “Big rooms were swallowing up the tiny furniture configurations, so they weren’t welcoming,” she says. u

Above: A contemporary stage is set the moment you enter the foyer, where a channeled wall creates rhythm and interest. A metallic woven paper from Phillip Jeffries in chromium adds texture. For architect Alberto Abad, it was primarily about orientation. “The land was wide, so we kept rotating the house to open it more to the lake,” he says. Previously utilizing only about 100 of the 300 feet of available waterfront, Abad added ample amounts of outdoor living to remedy the situation. “Now it uses it all” says Abad. He also revised the original floor plan, which was “broken up and very ’80s” to create an open flow where the great room, dining room, and kitchen were linked, all flowing effortlessly to the outdoors. This modification better suited the needs of the new owners, who wanted to utilize as much of the residence as possible from day-to-day, and entice their grown children to visit and enjoy the comforts during their stay. Luxury builder Gulfshore Homes, a preferred builder at Miromar Lakes, masterfully completed the extensive construction and renovation. Vice president Mike Soule and director of construction Matthew Shull oversaw the day-today process. “It was just a matter of how much to put in,” Soule comments. As the project evolved, it became a total renovation.” Gulfshore removed the roof, replaced solid walls with glass, turned flat ceilings into pyramids, and upgraded the home’s technology. u

“Florida Lifestyle Homes is much more about the quality of the homes we build, rather than the quantity,” says Ennen, the company’s president. “We aren’t the biggest builder, which works in our favor. It allows us to pay close attention to every detail of the homes we build. In fact, we take such care that I can go and personally knock on the door of every home we have ever built and be welcomed in by the owners. We always get repeat business and we are very honored by the recommendations we receive.” u Below: The dining nook floor is highlighted by a pattern of inset porcelain tile mirroring the ceiling detail above. Prospective homeowners looking for a casually elegant lifestyle are drawn to Pine Ridge Estates, a lovely Naples neighborhood offering estate-sized lots, many of which feature stunning lake views. The Baywood is not just a model, it is an “idea center” where new residents can preview possibilities, glean inspiration, and reproduce what appeals to them, or modify what doesn’t. “We tried to demonstrate a variety of ideas that would stimulate people to personalize the home to the way they would like to live,” says the home’s residential designer Alan Foster of Divco Custom Homes. “If this home isn’t precisely what they want, it’s a good starting point for something more tailored to them.” u

Expect the unexpected as you enter this completely renovated villa in Naples’ Pelican bay. No indication of the once traditional home remains in this modern showcase by interior designer Diana Hall of Cinnabar Design. The homeowner, an artist, wanted a backdrop on which to showcase her artwork. Striking high polish 24-by-48-inch white Dolomite porcelain flooring, mud-set in a stacked bond pattern, sleek white lac uered kitchen cabinetry and white walls create a perfect backdrop for the lively art. Fusing wow factor with functionality, the modern kitchen epitomizes open concept living serving as the social centerpiece of the home. The oversized

Hall accomplished the open concept by removing the walls that once separated the family room, kitchen, and living areas. The home’s dated layout was streamlined and optimized, opening the e isting floorplan and creating larger and more functional spaces. The kitchen area was redesigned, removing a wall to the dining area. The living areas were transfigured from top to bottom with the installation of interior details such as wood accents in the ceilings, new flooring, shiplap on walls and custom finishes throughout the home. During the remodel of this three-story home, Harwick Homes reinvented the oversized staircase, creating a signature into a signature focal point in the new contemporary design. The original Mission-style handrail, balusters and newel posts were removed, refinished and replaced. The stairway was measured on site, hand-cut,fitted and personally installed on the job site. KGT REMODELING

BEFORE

KGT Remodeling transformed a once choppy, dated floor plan into an open concept with an updated transitional style. The kitchen lacked ade uate storage and work space, and was walled-off from the great room, making it difficult to entertain. KGT removed the walls and Tuscan design features, including arched doorways. New 2 -inch porcelain tile flooring brightens the main living areas. The kitchen island was centered with the cooktop with three clear-glass pendants added to accent the high ceiling space. Dark cherry cabinets contrast the light Ta - ahal marble countertops and mother of pearl tile backsplash. A stacked stone focal wall gives the living area a modern look in this newly created open, light living space.

PELICAN BAY CONTRACTING

The remodel of this Naples’ condominium required Pelican Bay Contracting to work within the existing structure to create a brighter, functional design. The master bath now features a custom built, hand-crafted vanity with toe-kick lighting and a back-lit mirror. The space that once housed the tub was converted into a double shower with rain head, tiled in natural stone and porcelain. The existing kitchen was expanded by 10 feet and new custom-designed hand-crafted cabinets featuring toe-kick lighting updated the space. Indirect lighting was added over each of the living room sliding glass doors, and the ceiling was modified to accept new-style lighting. Rectified wood-look porcelain flooring completes the look.
