t’s a fact that everyone has utility and monthly bills: Electric, gas, cell phone, TV, Internet, and the list goes on. And no matter how financially

challenged or wealthy someone may be, these essential services are needed and can never be paid off; everyone will have to pay for these services for the rest of their lives out of necessity.

So when a global company is open in 24 countries worldwide and endorsed by one of the wealthiest people in the world, who features this company on his hit primetime reality TV show not once but twice, says you should find out more, would you want to hear more about it?

The way Shane has grown to be one of the top income earners and trainers in this business is by following the system the company offers all of its independent business owners (IBOs). He says that he tells people they can get the same services from the same major service providers, but get paid. Then, according to Shane, all he does is direct them to his online store, which is included in the companies start up business package.

What if this same company said they’d pay you generously for helping others get paid when they pay their monthly essential bills, would you want to know even more? Shane Douglas did, and it’s paid off in an incredible way for him. It’s been 10 years since this Idaho native living in a town of just 1,500 people

“Our system can be 100% automated for you,” he explains. “Simply direct potential customers to your online store that the company provides for you, and they can sign up for any of these services with many of the major companies that are available in their area. When they sign up on your online store, you receive a residual commission every month when they pay their bills. It’s that simple.” The key to his success, he says, is that he doesn’t complicate his business; he just goes out and shares the company’s program and his personal story. ”Before you join some other company that makes pie in the sky promises,

“Our company is different: We only offer services that people pay on monthly basis like gas, electricity, TV, internet, cell phones, home security and more. Build Your Own Business Empire This July/August 2016 issue of Home Business® Magazine spotlights eight entrepreneurs who have built up million-dollar businesses working from home. Each of these home-based entrepreneurs has grossed over one million dollars per year in sales, and each started out as a home-based business and/ or continues to be run from home. This cover story theme remains an annual favorite of Home Business® Magazine readers. The eight millionaires spotlighted all started out small — in spare bedrooms, kitchens, and garages — but continued to grow nationally (and in some cases, internationally) and achieved over seven figures in sales. Their business types fall under the categories of Business Products, Kids Playwear, Beverage Products, Food Products, Personal Products, Franchises, and Sales. Some started their home-based businesses on their own, while others co-founded and run their businesses with others. These eight entrepreneurs share their stories on how they achieved seven-figure earnings in home businesses. Do you have what it takes to build a successful business empire? According to one of our spotlighted millionaires, the answer can be “Yes.” As one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the fitness industry, Bedros Keuilian, Founder and CEO of Fit Body Boot Camp, opened one of the fastest growing franchises in America, with a new location opening every 38 hours. He’s also the fitness industry’s leading consultant for marketing, business systems, and development. His blogs, products, books, and live events help fitness professionals and business owners around the world build more robust and profitable systems. Bedros has been featured as a host and expert on Spike TV’s Gym Rescue, and he’s also known as the “Hidden Genius” behind many of the biggest names in the fitness industry including top celebrity personal trainers featured on popular television shows. An immigrant from a communist country turned hugely successful entrepreneur, Bedros uses the stage to share his personal American Dream story and impart his passion for success with audiences worldwide. To help inspire other ambitious entrepreneurs, Bedros has 10 tips for becoming a successful entrepreneur in 2016: 1. Build a Support Network. 2. Choose One Thing and Do It Better Than Anyone Else. 3. Challenge Yourself. 4. It’s Okay to Make Mistakes if You’re Perseverance, Learning From Them. determination, and 5. Put Your Employees First. resilience are three 6. Put in the Time to Get the Results You Want. “Being a successful entrepreneur doesn’t happen overnight and it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and drive,” says Bedros. Perseverance, determination, and resilience are three important words that every entrepreneur should have engrained into his or her daily business plan. Home businesses in a variety of industries have the potential for milliondollar success. Be inspired by the eight home-based millionaires spotlighted in this issue’s cover story and the secrets they share for achieving home-based business success. And that’s working less than half of the year, leaving the rest of the time for his family and other interests. What makes Pace such a good business is that it costs a fortune for schools, hospitals, plants and other commercial buildings to have roofing companies repair or re-do their roofs. Pace bypasses the roofer — lets the building owner apply Pace Seamless Spray right over the old roof... and the smallest Seamless Spray order earns you over $2,000 in commissions. The Silent Selling Tool We All Have Selling is something everyone does each and every day. Every conversation is a selling moment and a perfect opportunity to leave an indelible impression with whom you are speaking. That impression you leave can have other people wanting and clamoring to engage you. But wait—there is another selling tool that everyone uses every day. It is used more than conversation and many people do not have an active realization of how critical this tool is to success. Curious as to what it is? Here you go: Presence. Presence is much more than you being physically present. It means how you present yourself in every situation you are in. It’s how you show up and engage people. Your ability to demonstrate your presence is a powerful—and potent—silent selling tool, and one that is all too often underestimated and misunderstood.

for five minutes. But, if you don’t ask, you stay stupid forever.” People may be afraid to ask dumb questions because of peer pressure. They may lack self-confidence. Whatever the cause, not asking dumb questions diminishes your value to your employer. Asking dumb questions indicates a lot about you. It indicates you are not intimidated by the situation. It indicates you add value as a participant in the meeting. It indicates you represent the silent majority in the audience— the silent majority who had the same question but lacked the courage to bring it up. Walt Grassl Speaker, author, and performer Host of the radio show, “Stand Up and Speak Up” www.WaltGrassl.com Simple Ways to Refresh Your Spirit When you mindfully practice these tips (and come up with your own), you’ll find that each day becomes more colorful, more richly textured, more infused with joy and meaning. Really savor life’s simple pleasures. Life is abundant with gifts of indescribable beauty. Keep a spiritual journal. By checking in with yourself daily through writing, you will gain a keen sense of what peace means to you, and your soul will go to work to find the answers. Embrace an art form that gives you goosebumps. Some examples may include painting or sketching, learning a musical instrument, or taking a sewing or acting class. Practice gratitude daily. Acknowledging the positives in your life makes even the roughest paths seem more tolerable and in time will make you more resilient.

ruising down a street lined with palm trees, a dazzling ocean view passes through the window. The hum of a Bugatti Veyron’s engine music to the ears, success has never tasted sweeter. Perhaps another scene inspires a stronger connection. Children, parents, and grandparents smile around a campfire behind a glorious vacation home in Utah, roasting marshmallows and regaling humorous tales. Fortunate to be able to spend summers together free from financial duress, strong bonds are formed and life’s wishes are fulfilled. Whichever outcome is the dream success story for an entrepreneur, diving into the journey of starting a homebased business begins with that first step—an idea—and flourishes through a tried-and-true method: hard work. This issue spotlights eight entrepreneurs who have achieved 7 figures in yearly sales. Discover each unique story that had a common theme: success was not handed to them and did not happen overnight. Take note of the skills they possessed to attain high income levels working from home and get closer to ultimate success in 2016.

business, Vitabri Canopies. After many years of hard work running the sales & marketing department, Vieille turned Vitabri Canopies into the #1 tent manufacturer in France. In 2010, he sold everything he owned in France to move to America to start his own business. “I had a small apartment in Huntington Beach and just a few Vitabri products.” Vieille started showcasing Vitabri tents at farmers’ markets every weekend and eventually started doing trade shows for brand awareness. In his first year, Vieille only made $1,000 dollars in profits. Vieille joined ASI and Sage, the most popular online distributor channels, to expand his business. That year, Vieille founded Ins’TenT Industries. Vieille developed the AirDome, an inflatable tent unlike any other that is perfect for showcasing brands at events. In 2009, Robby Whites and Jeremy Rincon were laid off from their jobs as junior analysts at the Stanford Financial Group in Houston because the company was shut down for a fraud investigation. These friends both had a great sense of faith and spirit, and seized the opportunity to create something new. find an outlet, plug in your computer, and let’s get to work.” From those humble beginnings, today they’ve built a team of over 120 talented employees. After selling a majority stake to Bertam Capital Management last year, the two, now thirtysomethings, continue to work on the business and serve as advisors.

Thinking about a recent business trip they’d taken to Colombia, they recalled visiting an office that used a simple sheet of glass mounted on poles as a writable surface. They saw untapped potential in a market where the only competition was traditional dry-erase whiteboards, a product that had changed little since its introduction in the 1960s and left most users feeling dirty and unsatisfied.

Clarus Glassboards is now the leading manufacturer and innovator of glass dry-erase and architectural systems revolutionizing the way workplaces communicate. The company caters to some of the most successful organizations and industry segments across the world, offering innovative glass products that individuate a space with clarity, function and a chic and minimalist interior design. The co-founders thought it would be a pretty fantastic tool to give people the freedom to write creatively on functional and stylish walls, knowing it could easily be washed and wiped off. Following in the footsteps of other innovative inventors like Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, the two twentysomethings headed straight into their parents’ garage. Hence, the birth of Clarus Glassboards LLC. “In the early days, people used old doors propped up on metal legs as their desks,” states founder Robbie Whites. “The mentality was

to dream she would turn her vision into a multi-million dollar company. Once her daughter came along, Costa quickly realized a void in the kid’s playwear market. She searched for good quality clothing that supported play and empowered children with the independence to dress themselves fuss-free, without sacrificing style. Beginning in 2006 and like so many entrepreneurs, Costa bootstrapped her business, building it from her Vancouver, BC basement. With no prior experience in the retail industry, Costa designed and produced her own line of children’s apparel, calling it Peekaboo Beans.

growing their businesses. The business currently has more than 800 sales representatives and is growing at an estimated 30 new consultants every month.

When the 2008 recession hit, local boutiques began closing, no match for big box department stores. With fewer boutiques out of which to sell her playwear paired with an increasing demand for the products, Costa did what any successful entrepreneur and mother would do. In 2011 she adopted a new way of looking at business.

“My team is empowering parents to have their own rewarding entrepreneurial opportunity, encouraging them to love their jobs and live their family values,” says Costa. Visit www.peekaboobeans.com.

Costa turned to the greatest advocates for children, Moms, and offered them the opportunity to develop their own businesses, and earn income sharing a product they love with their communities. Giving parents the opportunity to set their own hours and work from home with their children and for their children ensured the direct sales model was a success for Peekaboo Beans. Imagine a quiet Saturday morning at a beach in El Salvador, relaxing poolside to beat the tropical heat. Mark Rampolla’s wife was pregnant with their second daughter and she had morning sickness that wouldn’t quit. The only thing that helped her feel better was “agua de coco” — fresh, clear coconut water, sipped straight from the nut. After many years in a successful but unfulfilling career, Rampolla was a man in search of a new future. Little did he know that day that he and his

wife were holding the seed of a great idea right in their hands. In 2004, Rampolla left behind his $300,000 per year job and his path to the top of a Fortune 50 company in order to start ZICO Coconut Water. With ZICO, Rampolla had an ambitious goal: introducing coconut water to the American market while facing steep competition from an already crowded beverage industry. “I wanted to help Americans stop guzzling caffeinated, sugary drinks and reduce obesity nationwide, and also help developing-world suppliers profit along the way,” Rampolla shares. MILLIONAIRE #5 - Food Product Natural Treatment for Mother’s Breast Cancer Inspires Family Business Amelia Kirchoff and Jola Sonkin, founders of GoMacro

Started by a mother-daughter team, GoMacro is an organic food company that creates plant-based nutrition bars with quality ingredients. The company focuses on providing snack options made of healthy sugars, healthy natural ingredients and no additives or preservatives, healthy grains and no dairy. Another important part of the business is the incorporation of environmental and sustainable projects both on their farm and in the production facility. Prior to starting GoMacro, Amelia was an architect working as a space planner. She then retired to the family’s organic farm in Wisconsin in hopes of pursuing a sustainable lifestyle. Her daughter Jola, CEO of GoMacro, was a Latin teacher at one of the Classical schools in the Chicago Public School System. In 2003, Amelia was diagnosed with

breast cancer and after a lumpectomy and brachytherapy, she turned down five years of drug treatment and instead switched to a macrobiotic diet. She eliminated animal products and processed foods from her diet, eating mostly the fruits, vegetables and grains she could grow on her family farm. “As I began to regain my health, I began craving the sweet foods I used to eat, and that is how I created the first “Macro treat” that would jumpstart our family business,” shares Amelisa, co-founder of GoMacro. She began sharing them with her family and close friends, and her daughter Jola decided they were too good not to sell, so she started distributing them at local health stores around Chicago. When the mother-daughter duo first started making these bars 12 years ago in their home kitchen, their initial goals were very basic: sales goals. For example, they wanted Whole Foods to carry their bars. Seeing the growth and mainstream acceptance of GoMacro bars has been their greatest business achievement. The bars are Non-GMO project verified, USDA Certified Organic, Kosher, vegan and free of gluten, soy and dairy. Amelia thought a very niche group of people would be interested in their kind of product. Over 12 years since their start, GoMacro is internationally distributed and sells three variations of plant-based bars. GoMacro’s current goal is to smoothly cross over into conventional markets as they continue to expand their product line while maintaining their core principles. Visit www.gomacro.com.

Finds Success Providing Cosmetic Hair-Loss Solution Salvatore “Ronnie” Passariello, founder and CEO of Hair Illusion

When Salvatore “Ronnie” Passariello went to prison on a drug-conspiracy conviction, he lost everything. He no longer owned his tanning salon and had little hope of reprising one of his former gigs, flipping houses, because of credit loss. “It’s hard to get a job out of prison,” Passariello explains. “So I had to be self-motivated.”

Salvatore “Ronnie” Passariello is the founder and CEO of Hair Illusion, a cosmetic product that helps with thinning hair and bald spots.

the internet and months of research and testing, Passariello created Hair Illusion, a cosmetic product that helps with thinning hair and bald spots. Because it is made from 100% human hair, it looks completely natural and does not budge, even in the wind or during an intense workout. It’s quick, painless to apply, and works for both men and women.

In addition to figuring out how to earn a living, Passariello faced another problem. He was rapidly balding and none of the products he bought to deal with his hair loss were working. Passariello spent his time in prison reading anything he could get his hands on related to entrepreneurship. By the time he was released, he had accumulated two large boxes of notes and magazine clippings. He set up a “home office” in the back of his friend’s tanning salon by hanging up a shower curtain and using a $200 laptop that his friend bought.

It took 15-hour days to get his new product developed, tested, and sold on the market. Passariello primarily promotes Hair Illusion via social media platforms, where customers can see the before-andafter photos of actual product users. Hair

Interview with

Jennifer Lopez On Acting in and Executive Producing SHADES OF BLUE, Being the Boss, Diversity on TV, and Fitting in AMERICAN IDOL and Vegas

Q: You had your current television series SHADES OF BLUE (based on a novel by Michael Rudolph called Shades of Blue: 30 Years of (Un)ethical Policing) completely filmed before it went on the air, right? JL: Yes. Q: Did that make it especially unnerving— wondering what the reception would be? JL: It was nerve-racking. Just doing the show itself was very challenging. Doing a one-hour drama is probably one of the hardest gigs in show business, and it’s very demanding, and a show like this is such an emotional roller coaster for me and for a lot of the characters. It’s very challenging — not knowing whether people are going to embrace the show. At the end of the day, you just have to give it your all, put your heart into it, put everything on the line, and see what happens. That’s how I approach everything, anyway.

“I don’t ever think of myself as the boss. I think of myself as a very important piece of this puzzle.” – Jennifer Lopez Q: You mentioned the workload. And, obviously, a one-hour drama, everyone says it’s the biggest grind, but were you noticing things that you are weren’t seeing in film scripts that made you say, “OK, I want to see what I can do with a full TV series run, to actually play a character that I’m not seeing on the movies?” JL: To be honest, for me, right now, the best movies are on television. The characters are better. The stories, like you say, have more opportunities to explore things. It was just 20

a really exciting opportunity to do something that I hadn’t done in a while in a different way than I had done in a long time. For me, the script itself, the story itself, the idea of it from the very first time I spoke about it with my producing partner Elaine Goldsmith Thomas — I knew that there was something that could go on. It just had enough of a base to really grow into something that hopefully, never gets boring.

Actress and singer Jennifer Lopez says, “Television has always been great at reflecting society since way back—pushing the boundaries of what’s happening in life, and I think it’s no different right now.”

Q: But at the same time, was there a thought of sort of doing something that maybe didn’t stray so far from things that we’d seen you do in the movies as well? JL: No, no. I never think of those things when I’m choosing projects. I just do what excites me, whatever kind of, when I hear it, goes, “Oh, yeah, that sounds good.” It’s very kind of from the gut for me. Q: What does your role of executive producer entail on a day-to-day basis on the set? JL: I have to say that they really give me the space to do the acting that I need, but you’re really involved in every decision that goes on — the way the set looks, what everybody is wearing, the way the scene feels, the development of the scene, reading the scripts and giving your input, casting the show, bringing in all of the crew — everything. It’s actually a lot of fun to create something from the ground up like that and to be involved at such an early stage. And then on the set day-to-day, I have a pretty tough workload. As you’ll see throughout the season of SHADES OF BLUE, my character Harlee Santos (a single-mother NYPD officer, who is forced to work in the FBI’s anti-corruption task force, whilst dealing with her own financial problems) is involved in almost every scene of each episode. Q: Jennifer, being the executive producer, that must create an interesting dynamic with

you and Ray Liotta. He’s giving marching orders on camera, and you’re his boss off camera. Can you talk about that a little bit? JL: He’s boss on and off camera. I don’t really try to challenge that in any way, shape, or form. We have a great time, actually. We really loved working together. I don’t think of myself as the boss on set. I think of myself as Harlee when I’m on set. Then in relation to all of the characters, feel like that we are a family and that he’s kind of our father figure in it, and he’s our leader. That’s kind of the dynamic that exists on the set. I don’t ever think of myself as the boss. I think of myself as a very important piece of this puzzle.

“It’s actually a lot of fun to create something from the ground up like that and to be involved at such an early stage.” – Jennifer Lopez Q: I’d like you to look at the television landscape through your eyes. Every year they talk diversity, diversity, diversity, and maybe we see one or two shows with a minority in the lead. But this year, it seems as though there is a wealth of shows with casts like yours, showing and reflecting real life. With the landscape from your eyes, and as a producer who wants to do projects like these, tell Continued on page 56

Beauty by the Box Beyond Her Blush Delivers Monthly Boxes Curated by Iconic Celebrity Stylists

By Alexandra Valdes

P

ersonally wanting more out of a subscription box service inspired Michelle Grundman to create Beyond Her Blush. After trying the existing subscription beauty boxes available in the market, Grundman found that the products were great, but had no idea how and when to use them. Grundman filled the void with Beyond Her Blush, which launched in November 2015. Beyond Her Blush is a beauty subscription box service that delivers trendy looks to customers’ doorsteps every month. Each month, the box features a celebrity makeup artist who curates the products within the box, which come together to achieve that month’s look. Each box consists of 5-6 beauty products and provides a mood board describing the featured artists and products along with a link for a video tutorial on their YouTube Channel to demonstrate how each product is used together. By providing an array of makeup, jewelry, lotion, toner, nail polish and more, the boxes

retail for $18.00 or $20.00 a month with free US Ground Shipping. Always having a passion for fashion and cosmetics, Grundman had a career in E-commerce and PR before the start of Beyond Her Blush. Being around her family and having the ability to work at all hours of the day, along with saving money on inventory storage costs, are Grundman’s favorite aspects about working from home. As a fresh company, Beyond Her Blush continues to promote itself through social media and word of mouth. By posting pictures of the box, the products included, introducing the theme of the month, and the month’s celebrity stylists, social media is a huge part of the company’s marketing plan. Primary customers are women aged 18-35 who love keeping up on the latest beauty trends. In three years, the brand hopes to expand their selections of beauty products and to

partner with popular celebrity stylists who have huge followings and influences on the beauty world, so their products can be seen on runways and in fashion magazines that inspire women around the globe. Grundman also sees charities in the future of Beyond Her Blush. Curating a box and teaming up with brands to help others in need while introducing some of the best products to the world would be her dream come true. Visit www.beyondherblush.com.

Cashing in with Litter Man Marks 35 Years with a Low-Cost Home-Based Business

By Sherilyn Colleen

B

rian Winch has been cleaning up since 1981; he cleans up litter outside commercial properties such as shopping plazas. His business meets the needs of clients who appreciate a litter-free environment but don’t know where to turn to for service. Winch was working as a shipping clerk at a sporting goods store in 1981 when he decided he would like to start his own business. His options were few with only a high school education and limited finances. He just needed to find the right opportunity. Inspiration for his business came from his father Joe, who was a school janitor. His dad picked up jobs on the side to help supplement the family’s income, and he sometimes took his children along with him as “little helpers”. “I remembered my father used to make extra money cleaning up litter from a neighborhood shopping plaza. All he had to do was walk around the property and clean up any litter from the sidewalks, parking lot and landscape before the stores opened the next

day. It was almost as easy as going for a walk in the park!” explains Winch. Winch started part time so the work would not interfere with his job. After two months of making more money than his full-time job, he quit that job to focus on his small homebased business. “You don’t need expensive equipment or rented business space,” claims Winch. “Just a broom and litter collection tool and you’re in business.” Winch contracts his service with property management companies. He services retail, office and warehouse properties on almost a daily basis. Most of his business comes from referrals. “I started my business for about $200 35 years ago,” Winch says. “I’ve turned that initial investment into a $650,000-a-year business, and it’s provided me with a great life.” Rather than instant riches, Winch believes in simpler businesses that lack the outrageous wealth claims.

Brian Winch is the founder and owner of Cleanlots, a “green” litter cleanup service for commercial properties.

The entrepreneur is also teaching others to replicate his success. His website offers his book Cleanlots along with free support. “I’m about 10 years from retirement,” Winch shares. “I think a great legacy would be to instruct other people without deep pockets or advanced education but with a drive and determination to succeed on how to start a litter cleanup business of their own.” Visit www.cleanlots.com/e-book-sample-pages. html and www.cleanlots.com.

BUSINESSES & OPPORTUNITIES

Becoming Truly Innovative A Family Value By Robert J. Holton

F

or a firm to become truly innovative, Gary Hamel and Nancy Tennant suggest in their recent Harvard Business Review article all employees should be taught to think like innovators. In this view, explained in a previous blog, innovation is not the exclusive purview of a few creative geniuses, but stems from an environment which percolates and cherishes innovative thinking. Hamel and Tennant offer four specific ways to encourage the pre-requisite thinking. An unrelated article by Morton Bennedsen and Nicolai Foss in the California Management Review attempts to draw links between family assets and firm innovation based on extensive historic examples from around the world. The overlap between the two articles is striking and suggests family-owned firms, when managed successfully, may be the perfect laboratory to teach innovation to the next generation.

“Access to knowledge and capital allow for greater diversification and ultimately cross-pollination of ideas within a family.” Challenging Orthodoxies

Leveraging Embedded Competencies When family history and public identity are positively associated with brand and product reputation, there may be further opportunities to leverage family identity. Brand extension and Family-owned firms, when managed successfully, market growth can be aided may be the perfect laboratory to teach innovation by a family name in ways to the next generation. a non-family brand name cannot. As an example, Apple may be able to expand into other identity. Access to knowledge and capital technological markets related to computing allow for greater diversification and ultimately and mobility, but the brand identity may not cross-pollination of ideas within a family. The Rothschilds highlight how the power of a family name can carry more legitimacy and be more powerful than brand recognition.

Families as a social system operate under a different set of constraints and expectations than a business, balancing issues of respect, appreciation, obligation, and loyalty in very different ways than a standard employment relationship. In many cases, family identity and family loyalty bind the family to the firm with bonds of commitment and stewardship which may incline the family to hold the firm for generations. Over that period of time, market forces demand innovation to ensure survival. Bennedsen and Foss suggest this concentrates families’ attention and energy to removing roadblocks to innovation. They share three historically successful approaches: invite young family members to try out new ideas, Innovation is not the exclusive purview of a few creative invest through a family investgeniuses, but stems from an environment which percolates ment fund which provides an independent source of funding, and cherishes innovative thinking. 28

A fascinating study found parental entrepreneurship increased the probability of children’s entrepreneurship by about 60%! The paper suggests the mechanism driving this is role-modeling, rather than education, access, or financial advantages. family-owned firms. Generational shifts in attitudes toward technological advances may yield new insights into previously unconsidered consumer needs or new ways to deliver on those needs due to technology trends. The speed of global inter-connected communication may yield new and exciting ways to deliver consumer needs, and younger generations may have a better understanding on how to utilize new technology. An in-house incubator or a stand-alone family private equity fund may help capitalize on these insights for the mutual financial benefit of the family. This creates a virtuous cycle, not only reinforcing the family identity as innovators, but also providing additional capital to finance further ventures. This has even been shown to be an effective model in generating new and useful ideas. Becoming Truly Innovative Innovation is critical to the long-term survival of any organization, but a family-owned firm may have some inherent advantages in becoming truly innovative. When recognized and leveraged properly, the family assets extend beyond financial resources. Mentoring and role-modeling from one generation to the next provides space and opportunity for the creation of new and useful ideas. Family reputation and family story create external and internal motivations, respectively, for a tradition of entrepreneurship based on innovation. Though families may face unique challenges in emotional and relationship dynamics, if those are properly managed, family-owned firms hold great potential to develop new ideas and build a lasting family legacy — a family legacy of innovation. Finding Your Way When the Ford Motor Company was facing financial difficulties around the time of the Great Recession, Dr. Willie Jolley was one of the men credited with helping it avoid a financial bailout and turning the company around. For the many small business owners and entrepreneurs who might be struggling to find their way, Jolley, who is author of Turn Setbacks into Greenbacks, and is known as “American’s Comeback King,” offers this advice: • Stop commiserating! People who sit around and commiserate are the people who would rather complain about problems than do anything to fix them. We can complain about the dark or we can light a candle and be a light in a dark world. The choice is yours. Business is tough and doing it on your own is hard work. No matter where you are though, commiserating isn’t going to help. • Don’t let your pride poison your prosperity: Some people feel that some work is beneath them, and it would bring a stigma to them if people knew they were doing supposedly “demeaning” work, yet they are struggling to pay their bills. Stop

trying to put up a facade of success and get real. Any work that is moral and legal is honorable. The fact that you are taking a shot at the American dream and entrepreneurship is commendable and honorable. Never be embarrassed about that. • Stretch your financial goals this year: If you’re an entrepreneur and you’re thinking small, you’re never going to make it. Start thinking about success in an uncommon way. Start thinking about making it big. Start dreaming about your bank account full of greenbacks. Thinking big is the only way to think in business. • Stop waiting for your ship to come in: There are two types of entrepreneurs: those who sit around and those who have an action mentality and make it happen. Success is never going to find you on its own. If you want to build a thriving business and a strong financial cushion for yourself and your family, take action and get to work. Build that ship because no one else is going to build it for you. Start thinking like the CEO of Y.O.U, Inc.

• Keep trying: When faced with a challenging time in business, people will say, “I’ve tried everything.” When I ask them if they have tried this or that, typically they will say, “No, I never thought about that.” Grab a pen and paper and list all the things you can come up with. After you have exhausted your own thinking, ask other people in your network. Trust me, you haven’t thought of everything. • Speak positivity into your business: Even when things have hit a rough spot or business is slow, you must speak positivity into your business and your life because your language has a direct impact on your mindset and on the way life will respond to your situation. For instance, never say, “I am desperate for work and I’m never going to make it.” Instead, say, “I am an expert and very good at what I do; I do occasionally have some challenges, but so does everyone and they are always temporary.” What you speak is what you attract.

Power Prospecting for Aces Win the Network Marketing Game with a Handful of “Aces” By Dr. Joe Rubino

N

etwork marketing certainly is the “People’s Franchise.” The opportunity to succeed in our industry is open to all players regardless of educational, social or economic background. In fact, anyone can be a winner in our business. And the surest way to win the network marketing game is with a handful of “Aces”. In addition to offering the opportunity to everyone we meet, we want to be on the lookout for those business-building leaders we’re calling “Aces.” Here’s what they look like. AUTHORITY FIGURES These are people who have influence over others. It’s not just that these people have their own circles of influence, Aces are centers of influence — men and women who are looked up to in the community or business organization. A positive recommendation from such a person carries a lot of weight. CREDIBILITY We all have varying degrees of credibility with our peers. If our friends and associates value our opinion, we can expect to have our personal recommendation well received by them. Whether it’s a good book, a great restaurant, or a visible opportunity to secure a future residual income, having credibility with people puts persuasive power at such a person’s disposal. ENTHUSIASM There’s just no substitute for enthusiasm that “I Am Sold Myself” (IASM) quality that makes people irresistible to others. Enthusiastic people have a contagious quality as well. It seems that the people around them catch whatever it is they’ve got. Enthusiastic people are not always Aces, but Aces are always enthusiastic people. SUCCESS A person who has developed success in any one area of life generally has formed positive habits that will contribute to creating success in other areas. Again, anyone can succeed in network marketing — but most successful leaders already know how empowering others leads to even more success. They make perfect Aces for your business.

not always Aces, but Aces are always enthusiastic people.

If you knew for a fact that everyone you prospected would earn at least $1000 per month — guaranteed — that empowering belief would translate directly into positive action. There would be no hesitation on your part. You’d prospect everyone you met! And guess what? Everyone you prospect can earn $1000 a month in network marketing. All they need to do is get into Action. HAVING A BIAS FOR ACTION Taking Action is what makes the difference between success and failure. The ability to take Action is true power.

“ Again, anyone can succeed in network marketing — but most successful leaders already know how empowering others leads to even more success. They make perfect Aces for your business.

The Key Business-Building Action Is Sorting We define “sorting” as a quality conversation in which you show your prospect the Action Plan for building the business. You may need to prospect five or more people to have one person engage fully in this conversation. With this in mind, a “Single daily Action” of sorting one person a day for 150 days — just five months — will result in having all the Aces you need to build a successful organization. When you’ve got a handful of Aces, you’re a winner. When you can partner with others and show them how to have the same winning hand, you’re a master of the network marketing game. Dr. Joe Rubino has dedicated his life to supporting others to succeed. He is the author of 12 best-selling books available in 23 languages and in 58 countries. 5 of these best-selling books teach people how to create $1 Million + incomes! He has created 4 multi-million dollar businesses over the past three decades. 7 Ways to Improve Your Non-Verbal Selling Skills Your Body Language Sends Wordless Cues Long Before You Try To Close a Sale By Bob Phibbs

T

he more you understand about what your body is saying—oftentimes without our knowledge — the more you can see how often it gets in your way. And that is especially true when you are in a sales situation. That is because oftentimes our bodies communicate fear — and fear makes people look away. Fear can cause you to lose your temper, or silence your own voice when it needs to be heard. Most of all, fear keeps strangers at arm’s length. That’s because 55% of our language to communicate with another person is non-verbal. Our bodies can sense bad vibrations long before someone’s words arrive. So now think about a time you felt devalued by someone. Picture what their body position was. Now picture your own body’s reaction. I’ll bet you averted your eyes and you slumped your shoulders. You might even have curled your toes inside your shoes. Now think what it would feel like to be served by someone whose shoulders were slumped, who didn’t meet your eyes, whose arms were crossed.

Would you feel engaged by them? Of course not! His body was telling you he wasn’t being authentic. His non-verbal cues made it hard for you to trust them. Most people don’t even realize when their bodies are communicating, so the first thing to do is to simply notice your body position.

Once you’re aware of your own body communication, you want to be a student of your customer’s body communication, too.

Do you cross your arms unconsciously?

Do you leave your arms down like a corpse when you talk to someone?

Do your shoulders slouch most of the time?

Those unconscious habits won’t bring customers to you. In fact, they are communicating your unease to them. When you have a whole crew of people doing that, the energy in your entire business turns toxic. It makes customers walk out saying to themselves, “Something just didn’t feel right about that place.” The following are 7 ways to improve your non-verbal selling skills: 1. Lift the sternum (that’s the flat bone at the front center of your chest). This allows more oxygen into the lungs. A good image to maintain is that of a string pulling your posture up from your sternum. This allows your shoulders to become more relaxed when engaging strangers. 2. Lean forward (but just a bit). Yes it’s subtle, but it keeps you from leaning backward, which shows a negative attitude. 3. Smile. A smile is your best tool to get someone to like you, and when you don’t smile, it’s the quickest way to turn someone off.

55% of our language to communicate with another person is non-verbal. 34

4. Meet their eyes. We like people who look at us. Too much eye contact and it can feel threatening, but too little and you

come off insincere. Yes, this is a balancing act to practice. 5. Gesture. Point directly at a feature and look at it with the customer. They will follow your gesture, and so will their eyes as you describe the benefit. Use an open hand or two fingers together, it’s perceived as more open and friendly.

“ Most people don’t even realize when their bodies are communicating, so the first thing to do is to simply notice your body position.

6. Arms open. Hold your arms open and loose to show a welcoming attitude. Arms folded over your chest indicate you are unsympathetic, authoritative, and at some level, you are closing yourself off from the other person. 7. Stand side-by-side not faceto-face. When you present merchandise standing by your shopper’s side, it is non-threatening. This allows you to do a sideways lean, which is friendly and non-threatening. An old-school tip says to mirror your customer’s body posture. For example, if they use their hands a lot, you mirror that. If their arms are open, so are yours. If the customer Continued on page 36

suddenly crosses their legs and arms, you don’t want to mirror that. Their body is telling you they are closed off. You don’t want yours to say the same thing! You need to maintain an open stance and see what you said or did to close them off. Addressing it with something like,

“ An old-school tip says to mirror your customer’s body posture.

“Did I just say something to put you off? is a good way to bring them back. Yes it takes practice, but once you’re aware of your own body communication, you want to be a student of your customer’s body communication, too. Body posture is something rarely talked about in selling because it is assumed that if an employee is standing upright, that’s all they need to do. But there’s much more to it. Begin by noticing your own behavior. In what situations do you lose your voice? At that moment, what does your body look like? When you’re about to close the sale, how does your body look? When do you notice your

breath becoming shallow? When do you take a step back from a customer? The more you can choose your body posture, the more you’ll find you can also choose your attitude. Your body is just like the car you have to drive. If you aren’t choosing the direction and checking the instruments, you’ll often be taken to a place you didn’t want to be. And while you might still be afraid at some level when engaging a stranger, when you use these tips, you act as if you aren’t afraid

which allows you to place the fog of fear in the background. The more you master your body communication, the easier it will be to master your verbal communication. 10 Best Offline Advertising Methods for Affiliate Marketing By Frank O’Hara Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to earn money online, but online promotion can be a struggle, especially with so much competition from other marketers. If you’re trying to promote affiliate products but aren’t getting much success, it may be time to use some offline marketing strategies to maximize your profits. Following are some of the most common and effective ways to promote affiliate products offline. 1. Business Cards It’s one of the oldest methods of promotion, but business cards still have a place in today’s digital world. Use a URL shortening service such as tinyurl.com or shorturl. comto simplify the web address. 2. Posters Printing posters that feature your URL is relatively cheap. You can even print them at home if you have a good enough printer.

www.homebusinessmag.com

12-60_HBM0816.indd 37

3. Become a Member of a Local Business Association Check with your local Chamber of Commerce to learn more about local organizations for businesses. 4. Use Classified Ads in Local Newspapers Classified ads in local newspapers have a wider audience than many online classified ad websites. 5. Writing and Publishing Articles Approach local trade publications or national magazines connected to your niche business and offer to write an informative article based around your product or service. 6. Flyers If you’re distributing flyers, try to ensure they look professional and attractive. 7. Promotional Merchandise Make sure all of your offline marketing materials feature the specific URL you want to drive traffic to. The promotional items can include t-shirts, coffee mugs, mouse pads, bags, umbrellas, and stationery.

8. QR Code Campaigns QR codes — the black-and-white codes that people can scan with their smartphones —make it easier for consumers to check out your site, as people don’t have to type in a URL. 9. Your Car A small sticker placed in a prominent position on your car with a few words and your URL is all it takes to attract potential customers. 10. Talk to People Spread the word about your product, and more people will talk about your product and recommend it to others. The more people you can drive to your URL, the more affiliate sales you’ll make. Just remember to track the results of each offline advertising method you use. This way, you can determine which methods give you the best return on your investment.

love the fast-paced, see-my-work-havea-big-impact nature of a new startup. I love it so much that, since middle school, I have been part of starting eight businesses. Admittedly, they have not all been successful. Some have been spectacular failures. Despite this, I have been drawn by the siren call of the startup once again. I am now neck-deep in Startup No. 9, FilterSnap. In 1999, my brother Aaron and I started InternetSafety.com. That was right at the peak of what some would later call the “dotbomb era”. It seemed as though venture capitalists were throwing money at any Internet idea they could find – no business plan required. We wanted in. Our idea was to build a dial-up Internet service to compete with AOL, MindSpring and EarthLink. Our difference was that we included an Internet filter so that parents could control the type of content their kids could access while online. It was a great idea. There was just one problem. Soon after we launched, dial-up began its slow, miserable death at the hands of broadband. We had to pivot if we were going to survive. In a flash of brilliance, we took our dial-up filter technology and built a software product that would run on any computer regardless of its Internet connection type. We didn’t know it at the time, but we had just saved our business. We called this new product Safe Eyes. We had no experience in running an Internet filtering software business, but this didn’t concern us. We put our heads down, worked hard, and learned as we went. It worked. In June of 2005 while on vacation with my wife, I received a call from my brother. Safe Eyes had been named the #1 parental control product out of 11 products tested by Consumer Reports. This rating put Safe Eyes on the map. We had beaten out products from Microsoft, AOL

and Symantec. The best part was that it was a blind review. We didn’t even know they were doing it. The next five years were a whirlwind. We hired a CEO to help us build the business. We received a venture capital investment. in the startup phase. But I am back in that fast-paced, see-my-work-have-a-bigimpact startup mode and loving every minute of it.

After the acquisition, I managed the Safe Eyes team at McAfee for two years. In the end, they laid off my entire team. I had been planning to leave anyway. They just made the decision for me before I had a chance to make it. I took a few months off to travel, play golf, and generally live as if I was retired. I quickly became bored so I started doing some consulting work. This helped with the boredom, but it also started feeding my desire to start something of my own again.

Officially launched in November 2014, FilterSnap offers 72 filter sizes and a choice of 1, 2, 3, 6 or 12-month replacement schedules. The service helps customers save money because clean filters use less energy and help avert costly repairs. We are still very much in the startup phase. But I am back in that fast-paced, see-my-work-have-a-big-impact startup mode and loving every minute of it. I’m not sure where this journey will end. Some days I think that Startup No. 9 will be my last. Others, I think, “Who am I kidding?” This time next year or the year after, I might be working on No. 10 and just as exhilarated by the ride as I’ve been since I first felt the thrill of starting my own business back in middle school. Health and Wellness Tips for the Home-Based Worker HOME OFFICE

Stay Motivated, Focused, and Healthful Whilst Working From Home By Rachel Craig

W

orking from home is the dream for many people, but it’s incredibly easy to lose motivation and fall into an unproductive and unhealthy routine. With no one looking over your shoulder, the television and fridge can devilish distractions. Heck, sometimes there’s an overwhelming notion to clean the entire house, even though it’s the last thing you’d be excited to do at any other time in your life. So how does one stay motivated, focused, and healthful whilst working from home? Firstly, a good motivation is to remember you’ll have no money if you don’t work. Secondly, introduce these simple, effective strategies and you’ll set yourself on the right track for a more productive and enjoyable working day. Create a Routine This is one of the most important strategies that must not be overlooked. Without a routine, very few people can function at an optimal level. Free styling is a gift that most of us will never understand or achieve, sadly. Try to get a decent amount of sleep by going to bed and getting up at same time each weekday. Write down your plan for the day and stick to it. It’s amazing what you can achieve by simply writing things down and making a physical to-do list. It will help you to prioritize tasks, organize your overactive mind, and spur creativity.

to repetitive strain injury in the wrists; and it decreases blood circulation in the legs, which can lead to deep vein thrombosis and various veins. To combat these issues, you need to do some desk exercises. Stand up and stretch regularly, and introduce some simple leg and arm movements.

It’s so easy to get caught up in work and forget to take a break, but you’ll get more done if you stop working at regular intervals.

Take Regular Breaks and Get Some Fresh Air It’s so easy to get caught up in work and forget to take a break, but you’ll get more done if you stop working at regular intervals. Ideally you should take a break every 90 minutes to 2 hours. Force yourself to go outside for a quick walk, do a spot of yoga or some simple stretches, or even just make yourself a coffee and listen to the radio for 10 minutes. The important thing is to remove yourself from your work for regular, short intervals to give your eyes and head a rest. Eat Healthy Healthy food and snacks throughout the day can transform your productivity immensely. Switch the crisps and chocolate for nuts, seeds, fruit, and whole food energy bars. Most of us

Get Showered and Dressed One of the worst ways to start your home-working day is to skip the shower and stay in your pajamas. Taking a shower can do untold wonders when you’re feeling sluggish and unmotivated. And whilst it’s important to be comfortable, try to wear something that helps you to get into the right frame of mind for work. Do Desk Exercises There’s a tendency for those of us who work at a desk to stay put for hours on end. This is this incredibly unhealthy for so many reasons. It weakens the core; it creates tension in the neck, shoulders, back and hips; it can lead 40

don’t have time for a long, leisurely lunch, but it’s important to at least schedule a small break to refuel with a healthy snack.

“ It’s amazing what you can achieve by simply writing things down and making a physical to-do list.

Drink Plenty of Water Drinking water is something that many of us actually have to remind ourselves to do, which is crazy. But we get so caught up in what we’re doing and often mistake thirst for hunger. Coffee does not count, unfortunately! Without sufficient hydration, your brain will not function properly and you’ll tire more easily. Invest in a Desk and Good Office Chair This is an added expense that not everyone can afford. But if you can, please do so. You could even get away with just an ergonomic office chair if you can work at the kitchen table. If you’re sitting down for most of the day, a quality chair will support your posture (as long as you stop slouching), reduce the risk of back and neck pain, and relieve pressure on your hips and derrière. Generally, you’ll find it Continued on page 42

and monotony of working from home. You will have to get up and out for regular walks with the dog in the fresh air; however, this will boost your serotonin, get the circulation going, and keep you active.

Use an Artificial Daylight Lamp These lamps can address low energy levels, fatigue, and feelings of irritability and depression, particularly during the dark winter months. By recreating the look of sunlight, an artificial daylight lamp can increase the production of melanin in our brains and revitalize our mood.

“ One of the worst ways to start your homeworking day is to skip the shower and stay in your pajamas.

Set Boundaries Setting clear boundaries between work life and home life is key to achieving a healthy balance. There can be a tendency for home-workers to just keep on working throughout the day and night. Whilst this is sometimes necessary to meet a deadline, it is not acceptable on a regular basis.

Setting clear boundaries between work life and home life is key to achieving a healthy balance.

On the other hand, friends and family often assume you’re free to chat or meet up at any time. To combat these potential issues, set your working hours and stick to them as much as possible, arrange a dedicated workspace in the home (i.e. not your bed or sofa), don’t take personal calls when you’re working, and communicate to friends and family when you are and are not available.

Q. Should I opt for nursing-home or inhome care insurance? A. When selecting insurance plans, protect against your worst risk first. In-home care is more about maintenance, while care outside the home is focused on crises. Home care is good for when a person needs help getting around. If he has a stroke, he’d need to be cared for outside the home initially, so there is a need for both. Q. What should I select as my daily

typical elimination period is 90 days, which means you are responsible for covering the first 90 days of care on your own. Most people believe that Medicare covers the first 90 days, which is dead wrong. It only covers it under certain conditions, and not all patients meet those conditions, which include: • A nursing home stay that follows a three-day hospital stay

allowance? A. If your health deteriorates, a daily allowance of $100 per day could cover all your care outside the home, but only a third of the care inside the home. Your home-care costs could rocket to more than $400 or more per day, so plan for the worst.

• Admission to a nursing home within 30 days of hospital discharge • A Medicare-certified nursing home • Physician-certified need for skilled care on a daily basis Your best bet is to be insured through a long-term care policy for that first 90 days.

An Original Entrepreneur Traveling Locksmith Invents Innovative Padlock and Founds Business By Rebecca Smith

M

aster Lock was founded by Harry Soref in 1921. As a traveling locksmith, Soref was always improving lock designs and began inventing as well. In 1919, Soref invented a padlock design that used laminated steel layers to economically produce an exceptionally strong lock body. After major companies declined to purchase his design, he decided to found his own— Master Lock—which he funded through investment by two of his friends, P.E. Yolles and Sam Stahl. In 1924, Soref was granted the first patent on his laminated lock design and continued to lead his company to become a major manufacturer of locks. Soref possessed two primary characteristics that demonstrated true entrepreneurism. First, he created a unique product that was of benefit to the general public, showing that he understood the marketplace. Second, Soref never gave up on his idea. His passion, tenacity and persistence, coupled with

his determination, paved the pathway to his success. Master Lock takes security seriously and offers a complete line of security solutions that offer escalating levels of security and cost. Business owners can choose based on their security needs and budget. Three popular product options are the Extra Large Digital Fire Safe, the New Laser Engraved Lock Box, and the Master Lock Vault. The company advises entrepreneurs to trust instincts, let passions shine and remember that a “no” is one step closer to a “yes”. Soref can be considered as an example. As a lock expert, with many years of experience repairing and inventing, Soref knew the needs of the market and focused on innovations to address those needs. And despite hearing “no” from multiple potential buyers, Soref trusted his instincts and leveraged his passion for his ideas to get a “yes” from his investors and friends. Thus began Soref ’s legacy, Master Lock.

Harry Soref is the founder of Master Lock, an American company that develops padlocks, combination locks and related security products.

Carefully evaluating business assets and typical daily operations to pinpoint unique security needs can determine the overall success of a business. If a business has a large volume of product or cash, conducts a lot of business online or has multiple people accessing the home and workspace, these factors can contribute to the security measures taken and which security products can help prevent financial and emotional strife in the event of theft or natural disaster. Fruitful Formulations for Hair Hair Expert Turns a Family Tradition into a High-End Beauty Business By Eliza Osborn

A

long-standing family tradition and a love of hair inspired sisters Jane and Jedi Nyachiro to create Jirano Beauty, a high-end consumer goods business specializing in hair products made for curlyhaired women. Growing up, they remember their mother coming home from the market with all kinds of fruit and transforming the ingredients into amazing formulations for their hair. Their vision was to use their family custom and provide natural hair care solutions using the purest natural products, specifically coconut oil. The entrepreneurial venture started when Jane was at a regular 9-5 job, where she quickly realized she had an entrepreneurial streak and was soon inspired to start a home-based business. Working in the corporate world, she was trying to figure out what her next move would be, and would not take “no” for an answer. “When my job said “NO”, but my mind and heart said “YES”, I knew it was

time,” Jane says. She wanted to do the unusual, be creative, and think outside of the box. It was important to her to create something she could call hers and say, “I did this.” Jirano Beauty is now mainly sold online, particularly because Jane and Jedi wanted their business to be scalable. They also have a number of salons and small chain stores that sell their product. Their primary way of promoting their business is through social media (Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube), friends and connections, and through their PR agency, BPM-PR. Jirano’s primary customers are curly-haired women who are looking for high quality hair products that work to provide texture, health and growth. When asked what is considered their best business achievement, Jane states, “It’s the fruition of an idea for hair products that has become a fully finished, manufactured product line that is now selling in a

All in all, Jane’s main goal is to make their business a personal quest to empower their customers and stakeholders by providing the best personal beauty products, while embracing and celebrating ethnic diversity. MONEY CORNER

Money Tips Start a Business Without Sabotaging Your Personal Finances By Tim Steffen, Director of Financial Planning for Baird

A

mong a growing number of Millennials, there is a real desire to become an entrepreneur, and a belief that starting a business can be a way to attain both independence and wealth. Yet, too many people put their personal finances at risk to launch a business. Tim Steffen, CPA/PFS, CFP®, CPWA®, Director of Financial Planning for Baird, believes it can be done without sabotaging your financial future. He offers the following tips: Delineate between business and personal assets. Set up a limited liability company (LLC) and separate bank account. Not only does this keep a clean line between business assets and your personal or family assets, it can help reduce your personal liability and make tax compliance simpler.

“Consider funding your business with money from outside investors or family members.” If you tap your savings, leave yourself a cushion. According to the SBA, the number one source of financing for new businesses is personal assets/savings. Most entrepreneurs pour some of their own money into a new business. If the business takes off, that can be a great investment. While you may believe your business will be a sure thing, it’s important to set parameters around how much of your personal savings you’re willing to contribute. Be careful about using retirement accounts. For many young people, retirement accounts can be some of their only savings, and it can be tempting to use those accounts believing there will be time to replenish them once the business succeeds. Some qualified retirement plans like 401(k)s allow participant to borrow from the account. Keep in mind, however, that you must pay the loan back within a stated timeframe. If you fail to do so, it will be treated as a distribution from your account and will be taxed. In addition, you may face a penalty for early withdrawal. Tax rules prevent borrowing from an IRA, so any withdrawal from the account will be 48

12-60_HBM0816.indd 48

®

considered a taxable distribution, and possibly a penalty as well. Another technique gaining publicity is called “Rollovers as Business Start-ups” (ROBS), which are arrangements in which business owners use their 401(k), IRA, or other retirement funds to fund a new business without triggering taxes.

While you may believe your business will be a sure thing, it’s important to set parameters around how much of your personal savings you’re willing to contribute.

Don’t build your business on personal debt. Financial planners generally recommend limiting your total monthly debt service payments (including housing and personal debt) to 36% of your monthly gross income. If you personally borrow money for your business and it fails, you may have to declare personal bankruptcy. Don’t rely on credit cards if you need to finance the business. Most commercial credit cards charge significantly higher interest rates than other sources of credit such as a business line of credit. In addition, many small businesses owners need to provide a personal guarantee when applying for a business credit card. So even if you’ve kept your business and personal accounts separate, if your business fails, you may be personally responsible for the credit card debt.

“Financial planners generally recommend limiting your total monthly debt service payments to 36% of your monthly gross income.” Consider funding your business with money from outside investors or family members. While most entrepreneurs don’t want to give away a slice of their dream, it can be a way to avoid taking on personal debt and it may force greater discipline as you will have to report to investors. Take advantage of small business loans. If you’re a woman or minority investor,

take advantage of special loans that might be available to you. Don’t forego insurance. Many married entrepreneurs rely on their spouse to provide health insurance coverage for the family, but if that isn’t an option, buy a personal policy. A severe illness or accident while uninsured can devastate your finances. As a business owner, consider any specialized insurance coverage you may need to protect those interests. Keep a fall back. If you are an attorney, CPA, or other professional, be sure to maintain your license, and give careful consideration to continuing to work full- or part-time while your business is getting started. Once your business does become your full-time pursuit, it’s important to keep up your skills in case you ever wish to return to your old line of work. Know when to throw in the towel. Identify goals upfront to define business success, and on the flip side, failure. Once it is clear that the business will not be successful, accept that and move on. Said Steffen, “When your business does start to take off, be sure to dedicate time to rebuilding your personal finances, if necessary, and working with a team of experts who understand your vision and can help ensure you are on track to meet your goals for the future.” For more tax and financial planning tips and insights, follow Tim Steffen on Twitter @TimSteffenCPA. Would YOU like to earn up to $36,351 (or more) per month inviting just 2 people (or less) into a $14.95 per month program!

Mike G CEO and Founder

Here’s an amazingly true story just as real and effective as it was ‘way back when’ as it will be for you now... ICANGET2

Dear Friend, Years ago a wise man related a story in his endeavor to explain compound interest to his grandson found the effort more difficult than he had imagined. Now through the years this story has been altered many times but the essence of it, the reality of it, the simplicity of it has never changed and is as true today as it was back then. The grandfather in his attempt to explain to his grandson the benefits of investing and receiving compound interest and how the magic of compounding can literally all by itself make anyone with patience and determination wealthy. He first talked about investing just $1k at a very modest return of only 7% and that $1,000 would double and the investment would return compounded interest compounded daily and in just seven short years that 7% compounded daily interest would turn that $1,000 into $2,000 with no effort on behalf of the investor. The young grandson eager to obtain his own fortune like his grandfather had, was struggling with the concept so... The grandfather offered this example... "Son" he said, "If I offered you $1,000 in CASH now or just ONE PENNY that would double in value every day - it's compounding, - which would you rather have from me?" The grandson quickly answered, "Well, of course Grandpa, I'd much rather have the one thousand dollars now! Are you kidding?" To which the grandfather replied, "All right then, let me tell you what you will be giving up." "If you invest just one penny today, and every day it doubles in value, in just 20 days it will be worth..."

Do the math with me... Day 1: 1 penny becomes 2, Day 2: 2 becomes 4, Day 3: 4 becomes 8, Day 4: 8 becomes 16, Day 5: 16 becomes 32, Day 6: 32 becomes 64 cents, Day 7: 64 becomes $1.28, Day 8: $1.28 becomes $2.56, Day 9: $2.56 becomes $5.12, Day 10: $5.12 becomes $10.24, Day 11: $10.24 becomes $20.48, Day 12: $20.48 becomes $40.96, Day 13: $40.96 becomes $81.92, Day 14: $81.92 becomes $163.84, Day 15: $163.84 becomes $327.68, Day 16: $327.68 becomes $655.36, Day 17: $655.36 becomes $1,310.72, Day 18: $1,310.72 becomes $2,621.44 Day 19: $2,621.44 becomes $5,242.88, Day 20: $5,242.88 becomes $10,485.76 $10,485.76! Wow! From just that first penny! And, that my new friend, and hopeful partner, is the very essence that drives the 2x14 matrix offered at this brand new company that is only $14.95 a month to join. It is truly amazing. When you join, you will be joining on my personal team! And get this: I’m the only person in the world who has put more than 11,000 people, direct signups not downline, into a single network marketing program. And I’ve done this all through email marketing. I'm even told that I’m the only person in the world to have ever put more than 5,000 people into a network marketing program - and I’ve done that with TWO other programs. I don't say this to boast, I just want you to know the nature of the people whose team you will be on. Now I don't expect to do it all myself... Once you join make it your mission, make it your goal to put at least two of your own people - contacts, friends, associates, followers, and of the social media contacts you have... Just get two, share this story, tell them about the team that you are on, use this letter, found in your back office, and your own link, it really is that simple. It is an amazing opportunity all about making money in network marketing. I firmly believe in the importance of multiple streams of income and want to show you how you can make this work for you! It has been years since I have been as excited as I am about this - simple but yet eloquent and powerful network

marketing company and I'm going to get behind it and fold it into all of my sales funnels and marketing activities. You can stand idly by and watch my team grow, or you can get involved now for only $14.95 and be part of it in a significant way. Imagine earning money from me and those folks who I sponsor in the form of spillover automatically - it will happen, it has to happen, the system is built that way. Imagine having $36,351 + change coming in MONTHLY, just as a result in having a full matrix because you read this letter today and sometime and hopefully in the not too distant future you too are there with me. So whatever you do, don't think of this letter as hype, don't think of this program as some pyramid scheme, don't discount it because it's network marketing. Network marketing is a way for the average man and the average woman who sells a service or product such as this program offers - that is worth it's price despite the fact that commissions are being paid out on it through several levels - to make enormous sums of money for every one. The internet is full of such stories, this company, I assure you, will add to that list of people who become independently wealthy just because they took action and joined the right team at the right time for a very small investment. Sincerely,

Mike G

Co-Working a Company Recovery Force’s Growth Step Between a Home Office and Independent Space By Sherilyn Colleen

M

att Wyatt, founder and CEO of Recovery Force, is worlds away from where he started his most recent company. Currently working out of one of 13 office suites that Launch Fishers provides in Fishers, Ind., his business has been able to grow with the co-working space and incubator, which just expanded into a new 52,000 square feet space. Recovery Force is now a 14-employee company working closely with the FDA, the United States Patent Office and complex-contract manufacturers half-way around the world in preparation to begin commercializing a suite of products in 2017. The company makes wearable, active compression technology used by athletes, patients and military personnel. Its products speed the recovery process and help the body perform more effectively by inducing sequential compression: the action stimulates blood flow and extracellular fluids, which reduces muscle pain and fatigue in athletes and reduces risk of blood clots in patients after surgery. Given the nature of the technology, it’s not surprising that Wyatt’s inspiration for Recovery Force came from experience: observing a cumbersome recovery process after his father’s extensive knee surgery. It didn’t seem conducive to healing, as his father was kept in a fairly immobile position due to connective tubing, unable to sleep due to the noise of a pump and he experienced greater

discomfort due to plastic airbladders called DVT cuffs placed around his feet, calf and thigh. “I felt that there had to be a better way to support recovery and the healing process,” says Wyatt. He began the process of research and brainstorming for a solution that would be productive in the healing process—and more comfortable.

Since Wyatt had worked in the medical device industry and been involved in four prior startups, he was familiar with what it would take to bring a product to market. The trick was honing in on a technology that would work. Although Wyatt started the company at home because it was cost effective and convenient, limited space and disruption became an issue. The technical experts vital to his business spent a great deal of time at Wyatt’s home office, which infringed on family life. Home was the intersection of work and family, but it couldn’t effectively serve either role. “I needed more room and separation between work and home, something I think many entrepreneurs encounter,” says Wyatt. “I also knew that once I validated our technology, I would need engineering equipment—and appropriate office space.”

Recovery Force’s products help the body recover and perform more effectively by inducing sequential compression.

To keep the lights on, he took up extra jobs like working at Disneyland and working as a bouncer at a bar. The big switch in Keuilian’s career came when one of his coaching clients pulled him aside and informed him that he was a terrible businessman. Luckily, this guy was happy to share his own experience and wisdom as an entrepreneur in order to teach Keuilian how to market and sell his services. Over the next few years, Keuilian built up Fit Body Boot Camp, his personal training business, and eventually

From a young age, the entrepreneur made a promise to herself that she would be a millionaire. “I was inspired when my mother put me on my first pony ride when I was around 2 years old, and my love of horses burned inside of me ever since,” Stetler shares. Her mother always told her that if she wanted horses or designer jeans—or anything more than a hot dog—to get a job. “When I was young, the need for luxury inspired me to get what I wanted,” Stetler says.

Gigi Stelter may run a massively successful RV Sales company that was grossing $20 million in revenue in 2007, but the rise to the top was far from smooth. At her first owner’s meeting, she suggested they change the hours of operation to better accommodate customers. They told her to “go home and bake cookies.” Stetler, who owns RV Sales of Broward and a number of other offspring business ventures, pushed forward to outsell and out-service all of her competition. “I decided to stay at the office and build an empire, while paying someone to bake cookies for me,” she says. Stetler realized that her male competitors’ refusal to leave their comfort zones could help her gain market dominance. “I eventually came to own a dealership, working 11 years

Power Tools for Women DIY Expert Shares Crafts and Humorous Videos with Audience from Her Garage By Sherilyn Colleen

M

ichelle Villemaire, the DIY mom on TLC’s new show What She Said, has always been outspoken and ready to share her opinions and creations with the world. Her childhood nickname of “Screaming Mimi” never quite faded away, though the name has always been a term of endearment. When her second child was born, Villemaire realized blogging would be the perfect medium for her to combine her love of writing, crafting and parenting. Formerly a freelance writer until she became a stayat-home mom, Villemaire had been urged by friends to share her crafts and humorous personal essays online. Today, she’s a successful blogger at HomeMadeMimi.com and is building a fan base for her YouTube channel where she empowers women to use their power tools. Villemaire has already begun to attract the attention of major brands and shoots DIY

videos for several channels with large numbers of millennial mom followers. The mompreneur considers herself a true homemaker, as she takes her inspiration from home and family and shoots her videos straight from her garage. She’s excited to continue to build useful and comedic content on her channel, and is working toward a television DIY show. In the future, she envisions herself creating an online store to sell her modern homemade products. The crafty businesswoman’s latest project was one of passion: a “yarn bomb” in honor of National Women’s History Month. With help from her community, she and her volunteers crocheted yarn pieces that were wrapped around 33 trees on Monument Street in Los Angeles. Each tree was named after a different woman in American history from Susan B. Anthony to Sally Ride. After two weeks, the pieces were dismantled and transformed into blankets that were

The act of creating a home for herself and her family led Villemaire to this desire to help others find a home for themselves, which she says cannot be done without the support of other women. “This was a great way to give back and at the same time teach my children the stories of the women who helped shape our country,” Villemaire says. Trip to Jamaica Inspires Mechanical Engineer to Design Unconventional Chair By Laurie Graff

ason Lutz had just graduated Ohio State University in 2008 when he headed up to Danville, VT to spend time with his mom. The mechanical engineer major was receiving offers from potential employers, but none had the same entrepreneurial appeal he’d experienced the summer before. Helping a friend construct a house in Jamaica, Lutz had become captivated by the locals’ use of natural resources to create products for exports. The idea of creating a fair trade bamboo furniture company lodged in his brain, he designed a traditional chair with an unconventional seat in bamboo. Lutz mom owned a cedar stand, the perfect setting for a contemplative retreat. The loggers hired to thin out her stand mistakenly clearcut the land, leaving behind a trail of trunks and branches of young white cedars. While his mom was devastated by the disaster, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Substituting

the white cedar for the bamboo, Lutz chose to try his hand at his Jamaican design. The project paid off. Lutz had reinvented the wheel … or rather, the chair! Inspired by the idea of a suspended hammock chair, Lutz constructed a traditional chair with an unconventional seat that floated in the frame, attached to the back and suspended from the sides by rope. The result was an uber comfortable outdoor chair that hugs you like a hammock, and conforms to every person’s body type.

world. Fitting family tradition, he and his wife, Sarah Cooke, created the Vermont Cedar Chair Company.

Starting with the New England craft show circuit, Lutz entered and brought his chairs, selling out at the very first one. Elated by his success, his mom revealed that furniture building happened to be in his genes. Pulling out the family photo albums, Lutz learned that generations of his family had owned the Grand Rapids Chair Company (1872-1973), one of the largest furniture companies in the

Operating from a 4,000 square foot facility in Hardwick, VT, all of the white cedar is harvested by hand from stands within a 30-mile radius of Hardwick. As “waste not” is the company’s sustainable mantra, only trees with a trunk diameter of four inches or less are felled. This thinning process allows for the larger trees to fully mature. “At the end of the day, you just have to give it your all, put your heart into it, put everything on the line, and see what happens. That’s how I approach everything, anyway. – Jennifer Lopez us, has the industry changed? Are we seeing much more progress than we have? JL: I think so, and I think it’s been coming for many years. I think there’s just no denying what society is right now and all of the different things, and it’s just not race, but it’s also gender. All different types of diversity are being showcased. There’s even been more of a shift in the past year or so. I think there’s just no getting away from it anymore. Television has always been great at reflecting society since way back — pushing the boundaries of what’s happening in life, and I think it’s no different right now. Q: Did you decide to film the episodes before you started doing AMERICAN IDOL auditions, or did you have to run off to do AMERICAN IDOL auditions? JL: We knew that I would have to start 56

doing the auditions while we were filming the show, so I would go on weekends to film IDOL. It was challenging. It was hard, but we got through it, and I just tried to take it day-by-day. And again, it’s just kind of compartmentalizing when I’m on the set. I don’t burden my mind with other stuff when I’m acting. I really feel like it needs my full attention, and then when I go off and do IDOL, it’s a little bit more of a fun thing on the weekends — reuniting with IDOL family, listening to people sing, and trying not to take it all too seriously. We balanced it out. It was

tremendous compensation plan, and our team has a really successful marketing system that we all plug into.”

Starting a home based business can be a tricky venture. There is a lot involved and it takes considerable skills and knowledge to navigate what are, at times, turbulent waters. But, having the opportunity to lock arms with two industry leaders who have over 33 years of combined network marketing experience, and who have already led teams to great success, makes these waters much calmer. Add to that the ability to simply plug into a Fully Automated Marketing Success System that features fully paid magazine advertising and these leaders closing your sales, and the waters become downright smooth sailing. Introducing the TDi Pros Team, led by Sally Darling and Gail Rahill. With many years of experience in the network marketing industry, Sally and Gail have learned exactly what it takes to be successful. Long-time business partners who both left the corporate world to take advantage of the opportunity to work from home with their children, they have transformed countless hours of hard work, research, and trial and error into a formula that works for everyone. And they’ve taken that formula and refined it into an automated system for their TiDom Inc. team. TiDom is an abbreviated form of the words “time freedom” and it describes perfectly what members can achieve when they join this top-tier business with Sally’s and Gail’s team. “This is such a powerful business,” one team member says. “TiDom has a

www.TDiPros8.com team member. “The advertising is done for us, and best of all, I don’t have to close my sales. That is such a huge relief! It’s so great to have a roadmap. It takes the guesswork out of running my business.” Gail explains, “We have made it as turnkey as possible. We’ve eliminated the things that cause people to fail and are completely committed to our team’s success. It doesn’t matter where you are in our organization. If you are on our team, you’ll receive our full attention.”

"Sally and I created TDiPros with one thought in mind," Gail says. "And that thought can be communicated with one word. Success. Quite simply put, Our Vision Is Your Success." - Gail Rahill

Gail says, “It’s great to be making this money, but what’s even better is investing in our team members’ success by buying each of them advertising so that they can hit the ground running. It’s a big reason why our team duplication is so high.”

TiDOM offers a wide range of product packages that appeal to people who desire to improve the overall quality of their financial and personal "health." "I love the products that are available," Sally says. "I have been using the health and wellness platform to meet my fitness goals for this year, and I'm on track to do just that. I'm thrilled." - Sally Darling

Sally and Gail are so committed to their members’ success that they invest 20% of their commissions to buy advertising for new members. And, as part of their marketing system, they teach every new team member to do exactly the same for each of their new members. “When you invest in advertising,” says Sally, “your income grows exponentially, so we teach our members to follow this simple strategy. Duplication is all about simplicity.”

The team’s National Advertising Co-op reaches 5.5 Million readers. And, to complete the process, Sally and Gail close their team members’ sales! “This is a complete system that works for everybody,” says a TDI Pros
