Cash-In on a Home-Based Service Business his September/October issue of Home Business Magazine® covers “cashing-in” on home-based service businesses, which make up a profitable and major segment of the home-based industry. Most home-based service businesses can be run part-time or full-time. They include business service businesses, personal service businesses, and consulting service businesses. With so many types of opportunities in each of these categories, there is something for everyone. In this issue, several service business experts also share their advice and secrets on how to attain success in their specific types of service businesses. Their advice and secrets can also be applied to other types of service businesses you may want to consider. A home-based service business can be performed for either a person or a business. That decision is a matter for you, the business owner, to determine, based upon your preferences, capabilities, and time. This is important. It is hard to make a home-based service business work if you don’t like it. The start-up and operating costs for a home-based services business are Your Hard Work substantially lower than that required and Research Ensure for home-based franchises. Higher levels of investment often come with specialized training programs, on-site and ongoing support, and even licensing. Investing in any business is a decision that carries risk. Minimize that risk by performing the necessary research to check out a home-based service business before you make an investment of time and money:

■
What are the start-up and operational costs and can you afford them?
■
Does it match the type of customers you want to do business with?
■
Does it match your skills, lifestyle, home base, and location?
■
Does the service business offer training and support?
■
Is your cash flow in good shape? How long will it take for cash flow to exceed expenses?
■
Look at the market. Is there saturation of the market in your area for this service business?
■
Evaluate the competition. Is there enough demand to support a new service business?
Before making that final decision on starting a home-based service business, talk to your friends and business acquaintances and brainstorm. Think through the decision and its implementation. Also keep talking to the service business sellers to answer further questions. And before you do sign any contract, review it with a lawyer. Now is the time to “cash-in.” The only way to succeed is to “do.” Your hard work and research ensure success in starting and operating a homebased service business.

Build a Killer Sales Attitude Life in sales isn’t fair. You know that. Some salespeople have more than their share of difficulties, and some salespeople get more breaks than they deserve. What fascinates me is how salespeople respond to their difficulties. Some of them use their difficulties as an excuse for their lack of achievement, while others use their difficulties as the motivation for their success. Your attitude determines your altitude. Good sales attitudes tend to bring good sales results, and bad sales attitudes tend to bring bad sales results. In fact, your attitude will defeat you faster than any problem you’ll ever have or any competition you’ll ever encounter. Remain Business Partners and Friends Good business partnerships can lead to great things, whether it’s Ben and Jerry dishing up ice cream or Penn and Teller dishing up magic. But sometimes partners aren’t well matched. Their personalities fail to mesh, their differing visions lead to a clash of wills, and what seemed like a good idea at the beginning disintegrates quickly in a flurry of angry words and ill will. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. A business partnership — like any relationship — can thrive if the right ingredients are in place: ■ Communicate. Communication is paramount in any relationship. ■ Be committed. Both people must be committed to the end goal. ■ Avoid being judgmental. In a
Get Results Based on Your Choices In work and in life you’ll often see people who are happy, no matter what they are doing, no matter their wealth, no matter their job, and people who seem a bit lost. What is the happy person’s secret? How did they find this happiness? These people own their lives. They don’t seek the approval of others when making choices and take responsibility for the outcomes of their choices. Five questions can help your readers find happiness at work and in life, which are: ■ ■ ■ ■
■
Are you competing with others? Are you seeking approval from others? Do you know what you want to achieve? Do you know how the much time, money and energy you are willing to spend to achieve your objective? Do you know that you — and you alone — own your dreams? Protect Yourself from Unethical Persuasion Have you ever agreed to do or buy something you really didn’t want or need, and later wondered, “Why did I say ‘yes’?” You’re not alone. Whether you ended up doing a colleague’s job, buying nutritional supplements you had little use for, or donating time and/or money to a cause you weren’t passionate about, chances are you said “yes” due to some finelyhoned persuasion. You may often find yourself in possession of unwanted goods or doing tasks you dislike simply because you feel compelled to say “yes.” It doesn’t have to be that way. If you ever find yourself the recipient of an unwanted or unethical persuasion attempt, there are steps you can take to recognize and disarm it so you have the confidence to walk away unscathed. Here are some suggestions: ■ You don’t always have to reciprocate.

he services industry is one of the best options for home businesses, and home business people are the best when it comes to serving their customers. There are two reasons for this. First, the customer is dealing directly with the business owner rather than a corporation with layers of protective bureaucracy. A long term personal relationship can form. The second reason is that the home-based entrepreneur, who performs or manages the work, is not just a paid employee, but one who chose his profession at will. In the services industry, opportunities range across many types of services and skills. Working from home, you can offer a business service, a consulting service, a personal service, or a service that covers both business and personal. There is something there for everyone. Many home-based service businesses can be accomplished part-time or full-time, and many have low start-up costs. Here is a quick snapshot of several types of services that you can offer in each category: Business Services: If you prefer to do business with other businesses rather than with the general public, a business service business is the type of service business for

CASH-IN BUSINESS SERVICES Freelance Writing/Blogging Becoming a Successful Freelance Writer/ Blogger By Williesha Morris It doesn’t take a fancy website or blog to be a successful freelance writer/blogger. You don’t even need to troll online job postings. To offer your business service, you just need a confident and business-minded attitude, and you need to follow these steps: 1. Your prices are your prices. Never adjust

for a client no matter who they are. It’s best you never do any work for family and friends. 2. Freebies should only be done for non profits, and that also should a rarity. Create articles to use on your site, which you can use on your portfolio or your blog.
“It doesn’t take a fancy website or blog to be a successful freelancer.” 3. Don’t use job boards or bid sites. You may have heard success stories about them, but it’s not worth it. The idea is to make money with a few clients and a normal workload. If you’re already doing this, finish your current workload, send a message thanking them for their work, and walk away. 4. Want to goof off? Fine, get up earlier or stay up later to play Candy Crush or scroll through Facebook then, so you don’t get sidetracked during business hours. 5. Recreate the rituals from your full-time job. If you grabbed breakfast and sat for a few minutes with a co-worker, do the same at home! Make breakfast and chat

with a friend on Google Hangouts or Skype — both are free! 6. Develop the courage to go after the big guys. Find established companies with proven products and services. They have the budgets for you. Working for other entrepreneurs may leave you frustrated, because of the demand for low prices. 7. Dream big and write things down. You’ll need to make space in your head for writing and marketing. 8. Create business hours that work for you and your peak energy level. Don’t feel strange if you work the “night shift.”
If you prefer to do business with other businesses rather than with the general public, a business service business is the type of service business for you.

It’s so peaceful, isn’t? If your clients work at different times, schedule emails to be sent out when they’re in front of a computer. Keep live calls to a minimum or at a time when both of you are alert and ready to roll. 9. Create a website that shows off your work. Clients want to see your work. 10. Perfectionism and comparison are bad habits to avoid. Just because the work may have seemed “too easy,” don’t equate that with poor or error-filled writing. You’re a pro, and your words matter. CASH-IN CONSULTING SERVICES Consulting “Secret Sauce” to Becoming an Expert
and experts who are great at their work but haven’t figured out how to launch that one big idea or build a truly successful platform. I think there’s indeed a “secret sauce,” and it’s simple yet profound. Experts know the answers to questions like these: 1. What’s working? Experts know, because they measure. This is true in every aspect of what’s happening, whether it be on the Web, in print, or in person. Experts who build a business around their expertise know which email approach adds the most to their bottom line, they know which events get them more clients, and they know if flying to a certain city for a certain client is the right move. They know this because they have a system in place to keep track, and they take the time to assess and understand. 2. What is making you stand out? If an expert understands his or her differentiator and personal brand, that’s because
By Scott James, Greenleaf Book Group As I talk to people, it strikes me that with those offering consulting services, there is a clear line between experts who have built a platform and brand around their expertise
“The key to becoming a successful consultant is to become an “expert” or “go-to authority” in a field with which you have experience and that holds your interest.”

they’ve done the work. Experts with strong personal brands know that they are swimming in a crowded ocean, and they can pinpoint what it is about what they do that other people get excited about, and they know how to talk about what they do in a way that honors their uniqueness and targets the specific needs of the people they want to influence. 3. What’s next? Experts have a long-term plan, but they also know the specific project (or projects) they are doing next. Experts think several steps ahead, and Continued on page 18

that ability to be deeply in the project that is happening now but also already be thinking at 50,000 feet and how today is laying a foundation for three years from now is a difficult mental tightrope to walk. But where some people get buried in the details of their current project and let everything else go, missing the forest for the tree, experts can walk that tightrope because they know it’s critical. 4. What do you want to be doing in 5 years? I’m talking about what you want to be actively doing day-to-day, not which accomplishments you want to check off. Successful experts build a community that they can work and grow within, so the question becomes how
Grading the Service Business You Want to Buy
Here are business attributes you will want to rate before buying a service business: 1. Income – Find out if the business is provable, sustainable, and if you can grow it. 2. Length in business – See if the business has been around for more than 5-10 years. 3. Books and records – Is the business in good shape? 4. Recurring revenue – Does the business have steady, recurring revenue? 5. Employees – Are the employees long term, low or high tech, blue or white collar? Are there turnover, labor, w-2, and/or independent contractor issues?

Transform Yourself from Local Expert to Leading Go-to Authority By Deb Holder, M.A. If you’re in business for yourself offering consulting services, you may understand the disparity that arises between being an expert and being recognized as an authority in your field. In fact, most experts fly under the radar and lose a lot of revenue because they don’t know how to make that important leap from “I know what I’m doing” to “You know I know what I’m doing, and you’re willing to pay me a lot of money to do it.” Here’s the kicker: Experts are well-versed in their fields. Authorities are well-known by others for their expertise. Therein lies the difference. In a job, you get paid for your expertise by one employer or, perhaps, one client at a time. When you become an authority in your field, you get paid for that same knowledge over and over again by many people. In a home-based consulting services profession, you can expand your reach, earn more money, and become a recognized authority in your field by creating these three channels for delivering your information: public speaking, authoring, and coaching. 1. Public speaking will create phenomenal leverage for your brand. It may be listed among the top fears among many of us, but public speaking is still the quickest way to build your credibility and to get known by people who would not otherwise cross your path. Additionally, it attaches your face and your personality to your brand — YOU. This is important because people are more likely to buy a product or service from someone with whom they are familiar than they are from a stranger. 2. Authoring books is not just for writers anymore. With the advent of ebooks and vanity publishing, just about anyone can put together a book that showcases their expertise. When tied into a trade show and your public speaking presentations, you’ve created a catalyst to jumpstart your publishing career and to earn

passive income for years to follow. 3. Consulting or coaching others to do what you do is a win-win. Just about any experience you’ve had can be marketed into a consulting or coaching program — either live or recorded. The good news is that you don’t have to leave your home or office to become a world-renowned consultant or coach. If you’ve survived a traumatic life event, learned the secret to becoming a successful business man or woman, or know how to create beautiful handicrafts — turn what you’ve learned into a consulting or coaching program and teach other people what you know. You can adapt your teachings to a workshop, an online meeting, an e-course, or a podcast. Interview with Actor
Colin Farrell
On The Ups & Downs of the Movie Biz, Family, Spare-Time Activities and His Movie The Lobster Question (Q): Colin, The Lobster will prove confusing to many people who see it. What are your thoughts on the story? Colin Farrell (CF): Don’t ask me to
explain the film! (Smiles) I also think the director and the writer (Yorgos Lanthimos) and co-screenwriter (Efthymis Filippou) left the story open to interpretation and didn’t want to hammer home one particular idea or message. That’s what makes his films so compelling and disturbing at the same time. I was left really moved and disoriented when I saw Dogtooth (Lanthimos’s controversial 2009 film), and that’s a big reason that I wanted to be part of The Lobster, because it has that same eerie feeling to it.
“Whenever I look at a new project now, I want to see whether it offers me a chance to probe deeply into the human condition and our psychology.” – Actor Colin Farrell Q: Did working on the film help you understand the story better as compared to when you first read the screenplay? CF: (Laughs) Not really, no. It only deepened my level of confusion. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Why should things be spelled out anyways? It’s much more fascinating to see a film like this and try to discover the meaning behind it. Everything about my experience working on the film was very special. Q: But you must have some impressions of what your characters are going through? CF: The film is dealing with the nature of loneliness that human beings experience. Being alone is a difficult state to be in at 20

t’s a fact that everyone has utility and monthly bills: Electric, gas, cell phone, TV, Internet, and the list goes on. And no matter how financially challenged or wealthy someone may be, these essential services are needed and can never be paid off; everyone will have to pay for these services for the rest of their lives out of necessity. So when a global company is open in 24 countries worldwide and endorsed by one of the wealthiest people in the world, who features this company on his hit primetime reality TV show not once but twice, says you should find out more, would you want to hear more about it?
The way Shane has grown to be one of the top income earners and trainers in this business is by following the system the company offers all of its independent business owners (IBOs). He says that he tells people they can get the same services from the same major service providers, but get paid. Then, according to Shane, all he does is direct them to his online store, which is included in the companies start up business package. “Our system can be 100% automated for you,” he explains. “Simply direct potential customers to your online store that the company provides for you, and they can sign up for any of these services with many of the major

the “on-ramps” have become scarce. According to a study from the Center for Work Life Policy, 73 percent of women trying to return to work after a voluntary timeout for childcare or other reasons had trouble returning to work or finding a job. Debora McLaughlin is the best-selling author of “The Renegade Leader: 9 Success Strategies Driven Leaders Use to Ignite People, Performance and Profits” and “Running in High Heels: How to Lead with Influence, Impact & Ingenuity.” She is CEO of The Renegade Leader Coaching and Consulting Group www.TheRenegadeLeader.com.
Why Work-Life Balance Is The Wrong Idea
Expressing positive reinforcement toward employees’ tangible contributions has an empowering effect that will yield greater ownership of their roles.
How Women May be the Difference Makers In Business Leadership Businesses do a poor job picking managers to lead their employees, collectively costing companies billions of dollars each year, according to a recent Gallup report titled “State of the American Manager.” The report is based on more than “four decades of extensive talent research, a study of 2.5 million manager-led teams in 195 countries, and analysis from measuring the engagement of 27 million employees.” The research yields a striking failure rate – 82 percent – when it comes to how well companies select their managers. An important criterion for how success is measured in management is engagement, where women have a decided advantage. Those who work for female managers are, on average, six percentage points more likely to be engaged, and those who work for female managers outscore employees of male managers on 11 of 12 engagement items. ■

Rigidity won’t help you retain top talent; be open. The ideal management style for today’s business climate is evolving. The traditional top-down hierarchical structure is giving way in favor of a more collaborative team approach. That means being open to communication, empathy, and encouraging inspiration in employees. Encourage engagement by focusing on an employee’s strengths or positive characteristics. Emphasizing someone’s positive traits doesn’t require you to ignore areas that could or should be improved. Clearly, if an employee is severely underperforming, then that must be addressed. However, if you can assume your employees are at least competent, then be proactive with your praise. Expressing positive reinforcement toward their tangible contributions has an empowering effect that will yield greater ownership of their roles. Too many exceptional women succumb to “off-ramping.” Multiple studies have found that on a woman’s path to the C-suite, she faces an abundance of “off-ramp” options – life decisions that take her off her career path. Since the recession,

The corporate world is susceptible to fads. Work-life balance, a push to properly prioritize work in relation to lifestyle, features the kind of faddish thinking that can lead gifted people down the wrong path. Finding the right fit — whether an organization is searching for leadership or an individual is seeking the right job — is more important than people realize. The problem of work-life balance starts farther upstream. When the appropriate person is aligned with the appropriate goal, balance is natural. A concept like work-life balance is a claim on how we should prioritize our lives, which, if believed, can be confusing. An organization’s employees, from bottom to top, can benefit from a more helpful perspective.
Don’t buy into the notion of the “work you” as being separate from the “real you.” We spend 8.8 hours of each day working, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics — the largest amount of time spent in any single activity (sleeping is second at 7.6 hours). Work-life balance enforces a strange notion that you are essentially different on the clock than off the clock, which hurts both employers and employees. Who wants this divided personality? Why not be yourself while doing what’s important — providing for your well-being and that of your family? ■ Not everyone is working for the weekend. Rather than work-life balance, it’s more helpful to think of your role in a company or nonprofit as work-life symbiosis. Just do the math. Working nearly nine hours a day, five days a week in a role that you do not like doesn’t stack up well with two days that quickly pass by — assuming you hate your job. How many years of your life do you want to waste not doing what would make you happier? ■ Take a cue from your technology. In today’s world, we simply cannot compartmentalize different areas of our lives like people used to. You can communicate with your spouse at any time and know people better through social media than through real-life interaction. For work, most of us carry our work around in our smartphones. If not text messages, then we get emails sent to our phones. Whether through our technology or the software running in our brains, we don’t simply turn off work when we leave the office. We should drop the idea that “work” and “life” are somehow separate. They’re not. ■

s the one-woman owner of Wordsy Woman Word Sales and Service, working in a home office, people have to look for me to retain my services. This makes getting my name out and convincing people I’m worth the expense a top priority. And as with most home business owners, I don’t have a huge marketing budget. This means taking advantage of these free or cheap marketing tools is a business essential. 1. Plan Ahead
According to Dr. Dennis Schrag, owner and operator of The Longview Group and Clinical Instructor at the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center at the University of Iowa, “The marketing and sales plan should be a subset of the business plan. Both need to be totally re-evaluated and rewritten every three years at a minimum; sales and marketing plans need to be refreshed every year.” Because you only have limited dollars to spend on marketing, knowing ahead of time how, where, and when you spend that money is key to avoiding overspending. This can be difficult to do in a home business when you are the planner and executor, which is why Dr. Schrag says, “Having these plans in your head is not good enough. They need to be on paper so they can speak back to you.” All you really need in your plan is to cover the five P’s: product, price, place, people, and promotion. Describe what your Product is, what makes it different from your competitors’, and what benefits it provides. Price is what you’re charging. Place is synonymous with distribution or where you’re selling your

If you’re a service business, your free sample can be providing free information through consultations or another outlet, such as your website, social media presence, booklets, brochures, blogs, or newsletters. “The ‘helping’ newsletter that is targeted to your client’s business is powerful. The newsletter needs to be short, very easy to read, very targeted, and free of self-promotion/advertising,” says Dr. Schrag. Newsletters can help the service and goods-oriented businesses alike. If you are in the medical field, produce a newsletter with information on living healthy. If you’re a plumber, contractor, or electrician, publish a newsletter with content about taking care of your home and business or being safe. A newsletter can also help businesses selling

your services, it enhances the chances they will become paying clients.” 3. Network
Today’s businesses, like it or not, are often built on relationships. Dr. Schrag says, “It is not what you know but who you know that really counts.” It’s important to build relationships with other people in your industry so you can keep up on emerging trends, and it’s important to build relationships with your customers. Social media provides an almost no-cost — other than time — networking opportunity, allowing you to interact with many people quickly. On Facebook, all you have to do is get people to “Like” your page, and you have a free pass to tell them whatever you want, and if you’re careful about the timing and content of your posts so you don’t annoy them, they’ll keep reading. If you’re lucky, a conversation will start that draws in other people. For success, budget your time, pick a handful of outlets to focus on, and, as with newsletters, provide valuable content, not just your sales pitch. Networking in the physical world is also important. Chambers of Commerce hold events where you can mingle with other businesses. Professional organizations not only provide this opportunity but their own helpful information. www.homebusinessmag.com
“It is not what you know but who you know that really counts.”
All of this networking and relationship-building will help to plant seeds for perhaps the most credible free marketing: word of mouth; people with no obligation to you telling people about you and your business. 4. Publicize
Publicity, though free when you get it, does cost time and it can be a wild card — you never know what the media will pick up. Instead of focusing on how to create publicity, think about ways to capture it. What are you already doing or planning to do in which the media may be interested? Helping the environment and giving to or helping some cause is also good material. When something happens in which you think people might be interested, send a press release to your local media outlets. Press releases are relatively easy to write if you follow a few basic guidelines, and they have the potential of allowing you to reach hundreds — maybe thousands — of people for free. When writing your press release, remember to include the who, what, when, and where information. Also, make sure to include all of the most important information at the top so that if a media outlet is pressed for space, they can simply cut off the release without losing too much valuable information. Above all, send press releases on newsworthy events or happenings that will be of interest to the newspaper’s readers. 5. Volunteer
Volunteering can directly lead to profit; it allows you to build relationships with people who are passionate about the same things as

you, helping with networking. Kim Hatfield, Volunteer Coordinator for the Davenport [Iowa] Volunteer Connection, promotes volunteering where your passions lie. According to Kim, almost all states have a commission on volunteer services devoted to helping volunteers and organizations needing them, but if working with those organizations isn’t convenient or you don’t have a municipal department, search in the telephone book or online for organizations in your community that might need help. 6. Form Alliances
Are there any types of non-competing businesses with which you regularly work or which you regularly see while conducting your own business? A baker would likely regularly see or be involved in a project with other businesses, even if not directly, like a wedding. A wedding would involve not only the baker, but perhaps a caterer, dress-maker, photographer, disk jockey, or wedding planner. Pay attention to their products and services, listen to what people say about them, and if they seem like someone with whom you could have a good relationship, approach them about forming an alliance. Ask to trade business cards to give to clients or suggest including links on each others’ websites.
“Volunteering can directly lead to profit; it allows you to build relationships with people who are passionate about the same things as you, helping with networking.” 7. Teach Others
No matter your business, you have something to share with others. In addition to giving to others through free samples, you can also do it through paid classes, whether through an already-established educational institution or on your own through seminars. If you do it right, you might even make money. Dr. Schrag relates that he likes teaching and thinks he’s good at it; he found that a way to generate some income and be seen as an expert was through the paid marketing of providing helpful seminars. He advises, “Always charge for a seminar, even if it is a token amount. People view ‘free seminars’ as worthless.” It’s also important to combine this tool with others. Dr. Schrag says, “At every seminar, I offered to provide my newsletter to anyone who wanted it. I provided a postage-paid return card so people could sign up for it. They saw it as a value added gift…and so did I.”
The Cupcake Lady
Recently, a Davenport, Iowa television news program did a story about the owner of a cupcake bakery who showed up at local businesses with a dozen of her specialty cupcakes. She claimed she didn’t do it for marketing, as she simply wanted to spread joy via her cupcakes. The sincerity of her gesture is certainly commendable, but so was her marketing scheme. For a relatively small expense, every time she delivered her cupcakes, she got her product in the hands of twelve individuals who obviously like the occasional cupcake (or they wouldn’t have eaten the freebie), who will likely think of her bakery the next time they need or want cupcakes, and who will tell their friends and family about the delicious cupcakes they got for free from the nice cupcake lady. Not to mention the publicity she got from being featured on the news.
Whatever tools you finally decide to include in your marketing plans, don’t forget to implement them. You can only know if they are going to work if you try them, so it’s important to decide in advance how you will determine you’ve been successful. Always weigh the costs against the benefits. If a particular tool is costing you hundreds of dollars or hours but only bringing in a couple of extra sales or clients, you need to ask if it’s worth it. Above all, focus on the customer and the benefits your product or service is providing and you’ll never go wrong. How Is Your Social Media Strategy Working in 2015? Tips to Evaluate and Strengthen Your Social Media Plan By SocialCentiv
W
ith most of 2015 in the books, it’s a good time for companies to take a hard look at how their social media plans are performing — see what’s working and what’s not — and to make the necessary changes to finish the year strong. Twitter marketing company SocialCentiv, whose marketing software tool helps businesses find new customers on Twitter, outlines steps that organizations can take to assess their social media strategy to improve and polish performance by year’s end. “Sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Pinterest offer marketers revolutionary tools for reaching and interacting with the buying public,” says Bernard Perrine, co-founder and CEO of SocialCentiv. “But as in any other area of endeavor, these tools are only as effective as the person who wields them.” Not sure where to start your social media audit? Perrine offers tips to help businesses evaluate their social efforts. 1. Review your goals. Social media for social media’s sake isn’t helpful. It’s important to know 1) your end goals, 2) who you want to reach, and 3) what you want them to do. The answers to these questions will vary with every business. While the end game may be the same in all cases—getting people to buy the company’s products or services—the particular audience segment a firm wants to reach will be unique, as will the best role that social channels can play in turning prospects into customers. “The owner of a local pizzeria may want her eatery’s Twitter followers to go to its web site and order slices online,” Perrine says. “A management consultant, on the other hand,

2. Check out customer comments.
Quick searches should give you a good idea on how people are rating the quality of your products and service. You may be surprised—and dismayed—not only by what is said, but who is saying it. “Even at small companies, well-meaning but misguided employees sometimes set up profiles for their employers without bothering to tell the boss,” Perrine says. “All of this can create a host of issues, from confusing customers to leaking trade secrets. We recommend putting together a very clear social media policy for all employees to sign.” Similarly, it’s important to monitor what people are saying about your business on social media. Customers take to platforms like Twitter to provide feedback that, while sometimes harsh, can also be important for corporate leaders to hear. Tools like Mention, HootSuite, Talkwalker, and Social Mention can all help with your efforts. 3. Evaluate the brand position on social media. To ensure brand consistency,
accuracy and effectiveness, you need to check that everything from product information, profile pictures and headers contains consistent, updated logos, images and color schemes. Other elements of the analysis include determining how many posts include images, which tend to increase engagement — such

as generating more Retweets on Twitter, what your competitors are up to on social media, and evaluating how you engage with others on social media. Metrics are also important to collect. This effort can be simple, such as using the page insights that Facebook provides, or something more sophisticated, such as through third party technology, notably Followerwonk’s data crunching and graphing service for brands that use Twitter. “There are a lot of resources out there to help execute a successful social media strategy,” says Perrine. “Don’t feel like these are simple, do-it-yourself platforms. They aren’t. You wouldn’t design and print a brochure all by yourself. You’d need help. Treat your social media efforts the same way.” In August 2014, HipLogiq integrated its portfolio of Twitter marketing applications under a single product line, SocialCentiv. Now, businesses can visit www.SocialCentiv.com and find a user-friendly, do-it-yourself Twitter marketing tool that makes it easy to create a campaign that tracks keywords and reaches relevant consumers with greater precision by targeting local Tweets. You can be part of the most relevant Tweets as they happen, spot opportunities first, and make a name for yourself with SocialCentiv. Visit www.SocialCentiv.com.

after Corporate America 5 Tips on Becoming an Entrepreneur After Corporate America By Entrepreneur and CEO of Wellthie, Sally Poblete
T
here are plenty of reasons why more people don’t take the plunge from corporate America to entrepreneurship. It’s hard to leave the security and a paycheck from a regular job, and the risk of failure is great. An entrepreneur also has to wear many different hats, like needing to sell to customers, even if your main expertise is in technology or finance. However, entrepreneurship reaps many rewards and if you’re thinking about making the switch, Sally Poblete, entrepreneur and CEO of Wellthie, a digital health technology company offering the only comprehensive software and analytics platform of its kind that helps people understand their health insurance options in a simple way, offers several tips to help you take the plunge: Build on Expertise. If you are coming from a corporation that is a player in your industry, and it’s a big and growing industry, why not start there? Not only will you have a deep understanding of your field, including the competitive landscape, customer buying patterns, regulations, pricing, and other insider knowledge that puts you ahead of people without the background, you will also be able to fast track the process of researching your idea. Search for Unmet Needs. You can likely rattle off a long list of process or product gaps in your industry that new design or technological solutions can address well. The current customers of your industry may be seeking a new solution that industry incumbents can’t deliver well or quickly because
it may be a big behemoth. Start from these nuggets to figure out how your company can solve a gigantic problem, provide a novel approach, or reinvent a broken process using technology.
If there aren’t people in your current network who you can imagine building a company with, get out there and meet new people.
Network to Build Your Team. One of the biggest challenges to a startup is building your team. If there aren’t people in your current network who you can imagine building a company with, get out there and meet new people. There’s an abundance of meet-ups for entrepreneurs, networking sites like Onevest, Start-up Weekends, and co-working spaces where like-minded people are gathering to meet others. Don’t forget to use your contacts to find mentors, advisors, investors, and potential customers. Start Sketching and Prototyping. Even before you need to find or hire developers, start working on putting your product concepts down in a visual to help sell your vision to potential team members and investors. The process of getting your first product right is an iterative journey, and a great designer can help you craft it into a prototype much quicker than you think.
“Even before you need
to find or hire developers, start working on putting your product concepts down in a visual to help sell your vision to potential team members and investors.”
There’s no better time for an entrepreneur to get started. While the challenges and barriers are still high in starting a company, there’s also a robust and active ecosystem that is encouraging entrepreneurs to get started. Professionals with deep domain expertise in an industry possess an advantage — you have honed great skills and experience along the way — and it’s time to apply it to your startup.
“The current customers
of your industry may be seeking a new solution that industry incumbents can’t deliver well or quickly because it may be a big behemoth.”
Start-up Funding. Start-up funding can come from many places — there’s the traditional route of personal savings and friends and family who believe in you and want to fund your idea. There are a growing number of crowdfunding sites like Angelist and Onevest that democratize funding. There’s also a growing number of seed funds, angel investment groups, or incubators whom are focused on funding early-stage entrepreneurs.

Start Your Home Business on a Shoestring Budget Save Some Serious Cash While Launching Your New Venture By Phillip Whitt
N
ow that you’ve decided to step into the world of self-employment within a home business environment, there will be many things to consider when setting up your new workplace. Almost everything you do connected to launching your new venture will require a financial outlay. While some costs such as licenses and permits are fixed, you can carefully scrutinize planned purchases and look at options that can save a significant amount of cash. The more operating capital you have, the greater the likelihood of long-term success. There may be a period of little or no income while you’re getting your new business established. Business consultation. Seeking guidance from a qualified business consultant can be of great value to help get your venture off to a good start. Instead of hiring a business consultant, seek counseling from your local Small Business Development Center. This is a valuable resource that won’t cost you a dime since it is funded through tax dollars. SBDC consultants assist small business owners in developing a business plan, marketing, and many other aspects of starting and running their enterprises. Some SBDC locations offer a helpful information packet specifically for home business upstarts.

model with a decent warranty and return policy. Start by checking with your local independently-owned computer repair shop. They frequently refurbish older trade-in models and have them operating in peak condition. There are also numerous online suppliers, and Ebay can be a great source of refurbished computers. When buying on Ebay, check to make sure that the seller has a good track record and offers a reasonable return policy. Most computer manufacturers sell factory refurbished models, but they are usually a little more expensive. However, with a factory refurbished model you will get a better warranty. If you require several computers for multiple workstations, try to negotiate a volume discount. Use open-source software and freeware. There are many alternative open-
source software and freeware titles that rival expensive proprietary programs in functionality, and in most cases they are completely free of charge. There are titles for accounting, customer relationship management, page layout design, office productivity, image and photo editing, etc. Depending on how many titles you require, using freeware and open-source software could potentially save you hundreds of dollars annually. The main difference between the two is that open-source means that the source code is openly available for developers in the opensource community to make modifications and improvements. Also, installing the software on multiple computers and freely distributing copies is usually permitted. With freeware titles, the software is free to use (and in some cases, distribute freely) but modifying the source code is prohibited. Some freeware titles are available at no cost for personal use, but require the purchase of a license for commercial use. Whether you’re using open-source software

or freeware, always read the terms of the license before using. Save money on office supplies.
Making frequent, small purchases of office supplies can add up quickly over time. This is especially true when buying name-brand products. While setting up your new office, make a list of supplies you’ll need on an ongoing basis (such as paper, ink-jet cartridges, tape, etc.) and do some comparison shopping. You might find online suppliers are cheaper than the chain office supply stores. Some online suppliers offer free shipping on purchases that exceed a certain dollar amount. Many office supply chain stores offer a customer rewards program that will mail you coupons for deep discounts after you’ve spent a certain dollar amount. Buying the store-brand version of paper and ink-jet cartridges can save a substantial sum over time. There are some specialty companies that refill ink-jet (or toner cartridges, if you use a laser printer) for cheaper than buying the new, name brand equivalent. Purchasing paper by cases of 5000 sheets can be cheaper in the long run than buying a ream

Mompreneur Offers Estate Home Business and Start Up Consulting By Sherilyn Henderson

ntering the antique and estate sale industries can be intimidating, but the right person can develop the required appraisal, marketing, and business management skills by consulting with “The Estate Mama.” While pregnant with her first daughter in 2011, mompreneur Lisa Kroese moved with her husband from Pennsylvania to California. They discovered that they spent thousands of dollars moving their things, many of which were broken or did not fit with the house they chose. With the money they would have made selling their furniture instead, they could have furnished their home and saved a lot of stress. Her inspiration for an estates sales company sparked, and Experts Estates LLC hit the market. Lisa began her lean startup home business when her baby was 4 months old, and she landed her first client within weeks of her
launch. “The first thing I did was put together a very affordable but well-written website and I started getting called for consults,” she shares. “Now I get referrals from Realtors, past clients and customers who shop at my sales. We advertise in the local phone book, too.” Half of her sales are from living estates, and the other half are often executors or heirs to an estate. According to Lisa, “There can be a perception that you have to have a huge fancy home with antiques for an estate liquidator to help you, but in reality average middle class homes are full of things that people need and will buy.” Demand for estate liquidation services are high and the estate sale industry is booming. Though she had the honor of handling the estate of Elaine and Jack Palance, Lisa considers Experts Estates’ greatest business achievement to be her team. “I often have an estate sale booked every weekend for eight

hen the World Trade Center was attacked on September 11th, 2001, Justin Rohner happened to have just signed on to purchase his first home for him and his family. “I became acutely aware of how fragile our way of life was, and I was determined to use my own property and all of its resources to become self-sustaining,” he says. Following this revelation, he founded Agriscaping Technologies. To coexist with the very strict Home Owners Association’s standards for lawn upkeep, Justin strategically integrated edibles right in his front lawn in a subtle yet beautiful way. “One day I found myself running full-sprint down the street, chasing a young neighbor girl who stole one of my watermelons!” he says. He discovered he was not alone in his desire to have access to fresh, locally grown food. Justin shares, “It all started with teaching that little girl how to gauge a ripe melon — that they ripen best still attached to the vine.”
Justin previously built a number of successful businesses including a business coaching practice. After attending the funerals of three of his grandparents in a matter of months, he decided to re-invent his life and retired from his ventures. In July 2013, he put all of his resources into Agriscaping.com. The self-described “new-age suburban micro-farmer” explains “Agriscaping” to be an elegant blend of the best of productive, sustainable agriculture, and the best of ornamental landscaping. “We are effectively maximizing the efficient usage of scarce water and land resources, eliminating fresh food deserts, reducing waste, beautifying landscapes, and empowering a new class of agricultural entrepreneurs from all generations,” says Rohner. Agriscaping Technologies has developed a training program that empowers local gardeners and landscaping professionals to become Certified Agriscapers. The steps described to achieve 100 percent growth of your business over three years are simple, but they require one absolutely essential discipline: focus. Planning for Long-Term Health Care? Tips for Selecting Insurance Options By Steve Castro
T
hanks to Baby Boomers and modern medical marvels, more Americans than ever are heading into their senior years, and they’re expected to live longer than ever, as well. Barely 50 years ago, our average life expectancy was 62.5 years; today that number has risen to 78.2 years, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That statistic means that more Americans than ever will also soon be deciding how to handle their eldercare. Steve Casto, Retirement Income Specialist and author of Is Your Retirement Headed in the Right Direction?, (www.stevecasto.com), says there are important questions and answers to consider before making that critical decision.

Your best bet is to be insured through a long-term care policy for the 90 days of the elimination period.
A. If your health deteriorates, a daily allowance of $100 per day could cover all your care outside the home, but only a third of the care inside the home. Your home-care costs could rocket to more than $400 or more per day, so plan for the worst. Q. What is an elimination period? A. Sometimes referred to as the “waiting” or “qualifying” period, this refers to the length of time between the beginning of an injury or illness and receiving benefit payments from an insurer. With long-term care, the typical elimination period is 90 days, which means you are responsible for covering the first 90 days of care on your own. Most people believe that Medicare covers the first 90 days, which is dead wrong. It only covers it under certain conditions, and not all patients meet those conditions, which include:
“The key thing to balance is the difference between what you think you’ll need and what you can afford between your liquid assets and insurance coverage,” Casto said. “If you don’t start by asking yourself the right questions, you’ll never get to the answers that will lead to a successful long-term care plan.” Here are some questions — and their answers: Q. Should I opt for nursing-home or in-home care insurance? A. When selecting insurance plans, protect against your worst risk first. In-home care is more about maintenance, while care outside the home is focused on crises. Home care is good for when a person needs help getting around. If he has a stroke, he’d need to be 42

Your best bet is to be insured through a long-term care policy for the 90 days of the elimination period. “These are just a few of the issues,” Casto says. “A good starting point for those planning early is to completely discount the idea of getting a dime from Medicare. Even if it is still around when you need long-term care, the restrictions on Medicare are tightening. You’ll be lucky to get the program to pay for 10 percent of a nursing home stay.” The real answer is to get a solid long-term care insurance policy that is based on a sound plan.

aster illusionist Michael Grandinetti spends most of his life on the road, performing in stadiums, arenas, and theaters around the world. However, when not traveling, Michael steers his now international business from his home-based office, a situation that has greatly benefited the growth of his company. His journey into building a home-based business began 15 years ago. After graduating from Duquesne University with a degree in Marketing, Grandinetti relocated from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles. Already a successful magician in his hometown, Michael, in his words, had to “hit the ground running” to start from scratch in a new city and to begin the arduous process of gaining a foothold in the crowded and competitive world of Hollywood entertainment. A self-professed workaholic, having a home-based office allowed Grandinetti to keep long workdays, often times beginning work as soon as he would wake up in the morning and continuing until late into the
night, researching contacts, making calls, setting up appointments, and developing new ideas. Slowly but surely, Michael was building his brand. Now performing over 100 shows per year worldwide, the work certainly seems to have paid off. To keep himself top of mind when it comes to the world of magic, Michael is constantly pushing to take his work into new areas, from stadiums, to national parades, to performances with symphony orchestras. His work is promoted through focused marketing plans incorporating social media and direct marketing as well as by maintaining continued relationships with existing clients, including theaters, casinos, television producers, and merchandisers, as well as business executives who routinely use Michael’s custom magic and illusions to show off their messages or products in a unique way. Michael says that his best business achievement has been to transform the dream that he had when he was five years old, to someday be a magician, into reality, while traveling

Spoiled Brats and 5 Dollar Teez Man Launches Two Consecutive Apparel Brands Against All Hurdles By Sherilyn Henderson
S
tarting out hand painting tee shirts in their early twenties, Steve Hechtman and his wife Cheril began their business in Cheril’s parents’ basement with just under a hundred bucks. With Cheril’s art degree and Steve’s “school of hard knocks degree” growing up in a rough New York neighborhood and working in New York’s garment district, they persevered and created the world famous apparel brand “Spoiled Brat®.” The brand sold 5 million dollars worth of apparel to retailers including J. C. Penney and Macy’s. When larger, more established firms got wind of their success, an unrelenting onslaught of infringement and legal battles ensued. Amalgamated with their son’s traumatic diagnosis of autism, these events created the perfect storm and the business came to a grinding halt. After 10 years of working various jobs, Steve listened to the cries of some of his favorite restaurant owners: “I can’t find a reliable printer to do my shirts,” “I don’t have the time
to go to a screen print shop or try to design a shirt myself,” and “Who can trust a stranger with my money online to do shirts?” 5 Dollar Teez, LLC was born. Steve and Cheril fill that huge demand for fast, low-cost custom apparel for local businesses. When Steve read an article in a famous business magazine saying that startup costs for an at-home tee-shirt business run between 2,000-10,000 dollars, Steve felt compelled to show how this could be done for under 500 bucks. Many friends and relatives asked the same question when Steve and Cheril built another successful venture with 5 Dollar Teez, after the Spoiled Brat® sensation in the tee-shirt business: “How did they do that?” Their newest venture is to share their experience and knowledge in The “American Tee Shirt Sniper” course, which is a step by step how-to guide for aspiring entrepreneurs in the custom tee-shirt business who want to get it done “like a sniper,” be their

own boss, and fill that niche in their own city. One of Steve’s students went on to sell over 50 million dollars worth of apparel to a major mall-based retail chain. One of “Oprah’s Favorite Things” By Home Business Magazine
W
hen Amanda Henke was pregnant, she was craving caramels like crazy and wanted to make them at home using natural ingredients. After many attempts to make caramels in her own kitchen, she was introduced to Annie B’s, a company that has been making handcrafted caramels and popcorn in small batches since 1978. The caramels were so delicious and the timing was so perfect, that Amanda and her husband purchased the company in 2013. Amanda and Annie B’s have their treats in small businesses across all 50 states. They pride themselves on using local and natural ingredients and offer a completely gluten-free product line. Each beautifully wrapped caramel is slow cooked in copper kettles, so they have a truly delicious buttery flavor and smooth texture — handcrafted the way candy used to be made in eras bygone. Annie B’s caramels are so good, that Oprah named them one of her “favorite things!” Cash-In Services! Continued from page 45
Collecting Becoming a Successful Collector By Jeff Figler If you are a true collector, you get pleasure from the pieces themselves. Some people collect particular items because they are familiar with those items, such as religious items, postcards, and sports memorabilia. A fad such as Beanie Babies or Pokemon cards may lend itself to be collectible items. Of course, the scarcity of the items will help dictate the value of such items. Some collectors are also investors, and resell items for a profit. If you do plan to sell your acquired purchases, make sure that you do not overspend. You might not be able to sell the items for as much money as you had anticipated. Quite often collections start and flourish by accident. Take the case of a person who collected comic books when he was young. He refused to throw any of them away, and after a number of years he realized how valuable some of the comics were, especially some of the early Action, Detective, or Marvel comics. The “Golden Age” of comics, from about 1935
Prior to taking over Annie B’s, Amanda and her husband worked in marketing for higher education and management in the snack manufacturing industry. Amanda and her husband manage all aspects of Annie B’s and target two main markets: women ages 30-65 and, on the wholesale side, small family businesses like theirs. Rather than implementing large advertising campaigns, Amanda says she takes a “grass-roots approach” to promotion and relies on excellent customer service, word-of-mouth, and social media marketing. According to Amanda, working from home has many advantages “I love the flexibility, the freedom to work in jeans and a baseball cap if I wish, not having to spend time and money on a commute, and being able to have our dog, Jiffy, in our office all day,” Amanda says. Being honored as one of Oprah’s Favorite Things in 2014 has been Annie B’s biggest business achievement thus far. “When we took over in 2013, we did a brand refresh
“While increased flexibility and time savings are two of the biggest benefits of direct selling, it is much more than that.”
to 1955, produced some issues that are worth a great deal of money nowadays. An unrestored copy of Action Comics#1 from 1938, which included the first appearance of Superman, can be sold for $75,000. Various baseball cards that kids would regularly buy and trade can generate thousand of dollars as well. On the other hand, some people offer the personal service of buying other people’s collections. This can happen for a couple of reasons. First, certain types of collections, such as a collection of original Beatles memorabilia, are worth a lot of money, and people will invest in these collections thinking that their value will only increase. Second, peoples’ interests change, and now they may be interested in items that did not previously interest them. Keep in mind that whenever and whatever you collect, and no matter how your collection came about, it should bring you enjoyment

that attracted the Creative Director from O Magazine to our booth at a show,” Amanda says. “I believe trusting ourselves to update the brand to fit our vision was the initial contributing factor for such great recognition.” And where does she see Annie B’s in 3 years? “We would like to expand our product offerings beyond caramels and popcorn, but we haven’t clearly defined what those products might be yet.” Visit www.anniebs.com.

order room service around the clock, and you feel this freedom that comes from being able to wander around in life. Now I would much rather spend time at home with family and enjoy the kind of comfort that comes with that. I’ve always loved family, and it’s more important to me now than ever. I live for my boys and I want to make their lives as beautiful as possible. That’s what comes with the responsibility you feel as a father. Until you have children, it’s hard to understand what that really means.
CF: We shot the film mainly in County Kerry in the southwest of Ireland, and that’s the region I feel closest to in the world. The people there are so warm and generous. I was very happy to spend time there, and every few years it seems I’m getting the chance to work and live in Ireland. I wasn’t even looking for a film to shoot there this time — The Lobster came by chance. Even though I live in Los Angeles, there’s nothing better than the feeling of coming home to Ireland. It’s such a joy for me to go back home.
Q: You shot The Lobster in Ireland. Are you happy at having the chance to work in your native country?
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not working on movies?
“I can imagine people having incredibly intense debates after they watch this movie and try to provide their own interpretations and figure out what it’s saying about the human condition.” – Actor Colin Farrell 48

Q: You’ve played in so many different kinds of movies and genres. Is there any one role which transcends the others?
“I’m very curious about human behavior and what makes us tick.” – Actor Colin Farrell
CF: Working in Neil Jordan’s Ondine meant a lot to me. My son was born as a result of being part of that (he began a relationship with his Polish actress co-star — Alicja
Bachleda, who later gave birth to his boy, Henry). That film and that experience will always occupy a special place in my heart.
