Finding a Startup & Finding the Time! Better Time Management Will be Critical to Startup Success No other business sector has such an emphasis on “startup” as “home business”. As such, we devote an issue each year to the important subject of starting a business. This focus is not meant just for the new entrepreneur. Those with existing businesses should diversify their existing businesses. Sometimes that process can be as easy as adding on a related new product, but oftentimes it requires a whole new startup.
“ Here’s a 60-second refresher course on time management.
Use this issue’s startup guide to help guide you down your business path. We outline major areas to focus on. We can’t cover all the details. Rather, use this year’s Startup Cover Story as your initial reference point. For example, read the article on business planning, and then research more articles on planning. The Business Startup page at HomeBusinessMag.com is a great resource for more startup guidance. Part of a startup guide is selecting a business to start! One competitive advantage of the home-based business sector is the large number of available business opportunity packages and home-based franchises. By purchasing a business opportunity or franchise, you reduce the risks inherent with starting a business. Franchises have higher startup fees but come with the most reduction in business risk. You can also consider other options for a home business startup, such as launching a business from scratch, or partnering with other entrepreneurs. Joint venturing is more prevalent in the home business sector, because linking together online is so easy today. Most home businesses can also be started part-time, a huge competitive advantage. You can minimize risk by starting out part-time and growing, as you work out bugs and develop positive cash flow. Whatever your startup choice, the most important success factor is freeing up enough time do it right. Entrepreneurs need more time! Here’s a 60-second refresher course on time management: • Create a master task list, which identifies everything you need to accomplish. Continually add or remove tasks, including personal ones, from the list. Use the master list as a tool for long-term planning. • Start each day with 10 minutes of planning. Review your master task list and select items to accomplish that day. Carry forward items from your previous day’s list. Don’t overbook your schedule; account for normal interruptions and distractions. • Rank tasks in order of A’s, B’s, and C’s. Work on your A’s today; B’s are important and will soon become A’s; and C’s are not yet time-critical. Schedule in your personal items to help maintain balance between work and play. • Assign due dates to help prioritize your A, B and C tasks. • Break large projects into small projects: All task lists contain items that are too big to be performed as individual tasks. Break these larger projects down into smaller ones. Keep breaking them down until you have isolated specific tasks you are able to complete. You’ll reduce procrastination when you break big items down into manageable tasks. • Handle every incoming email only once! • Document things on the spot: Take notes on items as they occur. • Get it done now! For any new tasks, see if you can complete them immediately before adding to your A, B and C lists. • Set aside weekly time for long-term and strategic planning. Loans — This route is not ideal for people without a secure income stream. Avoid taking out a loan unless in a stable financial place. Before researching zoning ordinances, determine whether you can run a business from home. Different cities and counties have limited zoning ordinances. Assess what kinds of commercial activities are permitted in your neighborhood. Visit the zoning office of your city to acquire relevant info. Your home-based business will most likely have an office space, vehicles on site and expensive equipment such as printers, scanners and manufacturing machines, depending on the business. Acquiring insurance is an essential step for the responsible business owner. Various insurance policies are significant for the business founder(s), partners and key employees. These include life insurance, disability insurance, critical illness insurance, partnership insurance and key person insurance. In times of crises, having insurance will protect

To determine the prices you should set, note the costs you will bear when providing the product or service. Add a markup on top of the costs to define your selling price. Debra Messing, well-loved actress from WILL & GRACE, talks about her role in the recent thriller SEARCHING, how to deal with social media, and the influence of the dwelling place on the upbringing of a child. Question (Q): Was this role very different for you? Debra Messing (DM): It peaked my interest. I had never read a script like this. It immediately threw me. So much of it was not dialogue. It was unchartered territory for me. Then I got into the story, into the thriller. I am a parent, so I put myself in his shoes. By the end I was surprised because there was a twist. I put the script down and thought, this person is a visionary. This had never been done before. I just knew I had to be part of this. Q: Is the process the same for you as when doing a TV show? DM: It’s the same as doing any other film. It’s

What are my relationships to all these people and these events?” There were so many more questions this time because of my character’s journey. It is so moment-to-moment for my character. I sent him five pages — singlespaced. I never had that many questions for a director before. Q: When you are on set without facing another actor, does it make the job harder or easier? DM: It’s much harder, because you are acting so much with the screen. The thing I love about acting is the magical thing that happens between actors. And when you don’t have that interaction, it makes it so much harder. All you have is your voice in your ear. You have to imagine that you see that person. It was so precise, and the character was going on in her head. It challenged me like it never did before.

when we started marketing shows. Now I feel comfortable on social media. Every parent has been concerned about children and screen times. It just means something different now because it’s interactive. Now kids can interact with potential strangers. This film is so of the moment and so relatable not only to parents but to kids as well. Kids nowadays never had a telephone that was connected to a wall. For them, this is their language. My kid has just become a teenager; I get this. I felt like this is built in suspense. Social media is a Pandora’s box. It is complicated, and you don’t know where you are going when you are searching. And that brings up interesting questions.
Q: Did you understand her actions? DM: I did. Reading it, I just really keyed into the fact that she was a single mom with a son that had issues, but she was protective of him. DM: I do see the changes happening. The conversation has begun. Things have automatically changed because of that. People are being held accountable now. There are consequences to people’s actions that weren’t there before. It has made me feel empowered to speak my mind and to share my personal experience and to speak out against things I perceive not to be right. Q: You are a single mom of a teenage son. Living in New York, does that have an impact on his upbringing? DM: Absolutely that’s why I moved back to New York. It’s a very diverse and dense city. Nobody is special in New York. And that’s awesome. Los Angeles is the opposite. It’s all about being special. It’s very isolating in LA. You have a house behind a gate, and in NY you walk outside, and you bump into all kinds of people. It feels to me like it makes virtual interaction less tempting, because you have so much stimuli everywhere. You never really get bored. I think when you are isolated in a city that’s really spread out, you seek out different things that challenge or excite you, and that’s why people turn to the Internet.

Dive into Startup Funding Tips on How to Get Started as an Angel Investor By Bianca Cabán, Director of Partnerships and Business Development at Republic
A
recent poll by Gallup found that 54% percent of Americans invest in the stock market, either through individual stocks, mutual funds, pensions or retirement plans like a 401(k). But less than 1% have made an angel investment, according to Angel Capital Association. Why is that? Because not many people know they can. Investment platforms like Republic are new, and we provide everyone — regardless of accreditation status — the chance to invest in highly vetted, private companies with as little as $50. Angel investing is risky, but to achieve a balanced portfolio it makes sense to allocate a small percentage to this asset class. Diving into startup investing can also just be overwhelming. At Republic (republic.co), we’ve put together an investor education series in the form of webinars and blog posts called “How to Hack Angel Investing,” to share some tips and best practices to get you thinking like an angel investor. We’ve also created a helpful acronym to remember important criteria for evaluating startups. We call them “The 4 Ts”: Team, Traction, Tech, and Terms, which I’ll go through in this article. It’s not an exhaustive list of criteria, but hopefully it guides your diligence process as a budding startup investor.
Team: The Expertise and Passion Needed to Solve the Problem Founders are critical to a startup’s success — or failure. Their prior career and industry experience should add up to a set of skills and expertise that helps them execute their idea, build a team, and inspire others. Ask yourself: Do the founders understand the market better than anyone else? Are they intensely passionate about the problem they’re solving? Can they clearly articulate the need for their company? Do they demonstrate leadership qualities, like the ability to inspire people? Do they have the resilience to overcome the many obstacles that entrepreneurs face? Traction: Signs of Growth and Market Demand For consumer-focused startups, a passionate and engaged user base is evidence of traction. 24

For enterprise companies, a robust client pipeline and actual revenue is the name of the game. Keep in mind that traction alone doesn’t indicate financial health or wise financial management. Ask yourself: How many users are there and what percentage of them are coming back every month? How much revenue has the startup earned? Is it increasing each month? Each year? What’s their sales and marketing strategy? How do they plan to acquire clients? Do they have any name-brand clients? Technology: Innovation Meets Execution Startups should leverage technology to create valuable and innovative solutions to realworld problems. Once you’re convinced of this, you can start evaluating the solution by understanding their strategy to build a solid product. This includes their product roadmap, design, and UX. Their product should also have a leg up on the competition. Ask yourself: What is the problem, and is it worth solving? Is the product 10x better than existing alternatives? What is their secret sauce or unique technological solution to the problem and can it be patented? Terms: Making Sense of Investment Instruments and Deal Terms Central to evaluating terms is understanding which instrument you’re using to invest, the company’s valuation, and how your investment — or equity ownership — could make you a cash return in the future. When startups IPO (like Facebook in 2012) or get acquired (like when Amazon bought Zappos in 2009), there’s often the chance for investors to make a return for their equity ownership — in cash or common stock. It’s common for established angel investors to get equity (i.e. preferred shares) in a startup at the time of investment. Most angels use investment instruments such as the SAFE, Crowd Safe (created by Republic), or a convertible note, which all convert into equity at a later date. These instruments save time, eliminate most legal fees, and allow early investors to postpone agreeing on a valuation by converting to equity only after there’s a priced equity round. Regardless of the investment instrument, ask yourself: What’s the valuation of the

Win Back Emails 10 Steps to Re-Engage Your Subscribers with Key Messages By eSputnik

contact list where every subscriber is an engaged reader and an active buyer is something email marketers can only dream about. Let’s face the truth; your email list will always include both active and passive subscribers. At the very beginning, when visitors opt in to receive your emails, they are usually really interested in what you have to offer. New subscribers read your emails, click your links and make purchases, but as time goes by they become less and less likely to open your messages. Keeping your customers engaged in the ever-changing, always competitive marketing world is a tough challenge. Eventually, some of the email recipients will no longer engage with your regular content. Sending emails to these inactive subscribers not only costs you money, but it can also harm your overall email deliverability. Email campaigns with low open rates can be flagged as spam and may result in you losing your sender reputation. That’s where you’re left with two options: either try to activate these subscribers or delete them from your email list. And if there’s even a tiny chance to rekindle the subscribers’ interests in your messages, you’d better not miss it. That’s why it’s best that you identify the subscribers who’ve lost interest in your emails and include them in your win-back campaigns as early as possible. The subscribers who you’ll manage to reactivate may even become the most loyal brand advocates in the long run. Here are the main steps to creating a wellplanned re-engagement campaign, one that takes into account the nature of your business, runs automatically and drives results.
1. Identify Your Inactive Subscribers There are two common ways to identify an inactive subscriber: by the number of subsequent emails ignored recently or by the time since the last email open. For example, you can launch your re-engagement campaign for those who haven’t opened the latest 7 emails or haven’t opened any emails for the last 3-6 months. 2. Consider Your Current Sending Frequency Your subscribers may prefer to receive emails from you on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Some of them may want to receive all types of emails, while others care only about your special offers. In your emails, provide your customers with a link to an email preference center — a webpage where they can choose their desirable email frequency and topics. If your subscribers stop reading your emails, you’ll know it’s not because you’re over-emailing them. And by knowing each subscriber’s expectations about email frequency, you’ll be able to start your win-back campaigns at the right moment. If your subscribers choose to receive your emails daily, it might be a good idea to send a win-back email after a week since their last open. However, if someone chooses to receive emails weekly, they would take it as yet another regular email.

Try to answer the three main questions your subscribers may ask, “Why do I want to get emails from this brand?” “What do I lose by ignoring these emails?” and “How do I benefit if I continue receiving them?”
6. Try Different Ideas for Customer Re-engagement Remember that you are not bound to send the cliché ‘we miss you’ message. In your re-engagement emails, you can ask for feedback, update your subscribers on new products and features, offer gifts or discounts, and so on. Try to figure out what kind of message and offer would be the best fit for each particular group of your inactive customers. Instead, it’s best that you send emails that don’t make your re-engagement efforts obvious to the recipients.

Remember that inactive subscribers are the most troublesome and risky part of your list. WHAT NOT TO DO AT A NETWORKING EVENT Don’t talk about yourself. We frequently opt to talk relentlessly about ourselves, especially if we are stressed, desperately trying to convey what we do and share successes and proof points. When all we need to do is throw a few words in to grab attention. My partner is a master at this: He shares snippets of info, exciting enough to get the listener to ask for more and serves it in bite-size chunks whilst engaging in a lot of listening. Giving room for the other person to talk and then adding and building rapport on their experience is crucial to making a positive, confident impression. Don’t overwork the room. We are all told again and again not to stick at one place during a networking event, to make sure we meet many people. However, we should also be told not to look past the person we are talking to, frantically searching for who to talk to next! Focus on making two or three good connections instead of trying to talk to everyone. If there is no rapport with one person, politely excuse yourself to move to someone else. Don’t go with friends. To be perfectly honest, this is an exaggeration to make a point. I do prefer to go to networking events with friends as it gives me an anchor, a safe harbour to go to before and after venturing out in the storm of cold networking! However, it can also be a trap, and I often find myself staying comfortably put and then wondering why I didn’t just stay home! Don’t be a stalker. I’ve lost count of the

Bottom Line Subscriber inactivity is something every business faces sooner or later, but that’s life. It’s how you cope with the challenge that makes all the difference. Remember there’s no magic formula that fits everyone all the time. Consider your inactive

t is one of the biggest headaches home workers can face — after having provided a client with a great service or product, you are left waiting to get paid while your own bills begin to mount up. Chasing down late payers can seem like a major chore, but it is essential if you are going to make your business a success. If you are waiting months on end for a client to settle an invoice and are simply hoping that one day the money will come in, small problems can very quickly become big ones. There are many reasons for late payments, not all of them cynical, and the last thing you want is to rail a valuable relationship by having an unnecessary row over how and when you should have been paid. But similarly, you do not want to be taken advantage of and used as a free line of credit! The more organized you are the more likely you are to get paid on time and spend less time chasing payments.
Take Control and Be the Boss The biggest favor you can do for yourself when dealing with getting payments for your invoices is to be professional and remember you’re in charge. Be confident: you’re a dab hand at doing this in every other area of your business, and this is no different. You need to be organized about keeping track of who owes you what, and when they were supposed to pay you.

Get a diary and be methodical; for instance, have a set time each week or month for doing your banking and making sure payments have arrived. Having a system in place that you stick to will make your life easier and mean you don’t get in the habit of chasing only when you realize that an invoice is really overdue and you need the money quickly to pay a big bill of your own. Much of this can be done automatically if you use online bookkeeping software, some of which is even free. For instance, Pandle can automatically send chase emails to late payers. Create a Payment Policy Creating a transparent payment policy will ensure your clients are aware of how and when to pay you for your services. If you have a late payment policy in place, then you have the authority to enforce the rules. Asking clients to sign a payment policy at the start of a contract will ensure that they are aware of your terms and conditions. Include specific payments dates — these may vary depending on what business you are in — as well as details of charges and interest for late payments. Set up a reminder system for payments.

How long you might wait to get paid can depend on the sector you are working in. Manufacturing companies, for instance, will generally pay after they have received a customer order, delaying payments to small businesses. Other sectors can be much quicker to pay — it’s important to check. As well as including details of charges for late payments, you may want to highlight discounts available to early payers; this could mean a 2% discount for paying in 14 days instead of 28. Offering a discount for fast payment might be beneficial to both parties; the client gets a discount and you get paid on time. Your payments policy should also include basic home business details, such as your address and details of how and where you want to get paid. It’s essential to include a pay date in the policy so clients are aware of how much time they have to pay you. Make sure your clients have a copy of and understand your payment policy. Be clear about
your terms and conditions; ask your client to sign the policy before you get to work.
Net Days Smaller businesses should consider the number of net days they are using — that is how long they wait to get paid by the client. Many home business owners automatically opt for the 28day option but it might be worth reducing that to 14 days or even 7. Remember, the longer you wait to get paid the less likely the money will come in.
Deposits If you are working on a project that may span months and you have to reserve time in the future to work on it, get a deposit up front so if it falls through you won’t be left out of pocket. Asking for a deposit will ensure your time is not completely wasted. Likewise, you get phased payments with clients, particularly if you are working on a long-term project or if it starts to drift. If lots of work starts getting added, make sure you agree on terms straight away for the extra work rather than have the conversation at the end: some firms will be reasonable, but others will see your demands as an unnecessary cost.

demand payment only to find you have the invoice details wrong, or that it never reached the client in the first place. Be clear of your facts before you begin sending reminders and demanding payment. Make sure the invoice is accurate when you send it in. Many will, perhaps rightly, refuse to pay an invoice with wrong or incorrect details. The best way to avoid this is to get it right the first time.
Chasing Down Late Payers The first order of business when a client has missed a payment is to politely nudge them and point them in the direction of your invoice. Sending a polite reminder email will help you get noticed; following up with a quick call should your email go unanswered will also help your cause. Remember to stay professional and courteous. Being abrasive and rude will work against you with most people. Of course, there are those who simply don’t pay on time, no matter how efficient your reminders are. Unfortunately, these are the tricky customers who need a tougher line and it is time to think hard about whether you want them as a client in the future. There are a few different options you can take. Firstly, if they want more work done, then you can insist that they settle their debts first. You can also insist on a different payment approach going forward so you get paid up front to avoid future hassle. Other options include selling your invoices and getting someone else to do the chasing for you, known as invoice factoring (an important option if you need the cash, but you won’t get anything like what you’re owed), or pursuing a claim for payment legally, perhaps through the small claims court. It is worth noting that many businesses suddenly pay attention when their bad behavior is called out on social media.
Accept It’s Part of the Job Whilst you may see being the late payments manager as your role, in reality it’s an essential role that you need to embrace as a business owner! n 2016, Dr. Karyn Koven launched LanguageBird® and, accidentally, made one of the best worst decisions an entrepreneur could make.
