tremendous compensation plan, and our team has a really successful marketing system that we all plug into.”
Starting a home based business can be a tricky venture. There is a lot involved and it takes considerable skills and knowledge to navigate what are, at times, turbulent waters. But, having the opportunity to lock arms with two industry leaders who have over 33 years of combined network marketing experience, and who have already led teams to great success, makes these waters much calmer. Add to that the ability to simply plug into a Fully Automated Marketing Success System that features fully paid magazine advertising and these leaders closing your sales, and the waters become downright smooth sailing. Introducing the TDi Pros Team, led by Sally Darling and Gail Rahill. With many years of experience in the network marketing industry, Sally and Gail have learned exactly what it takes to be successful. Long-time business partners who both left the corporate world to take advantage of the opportunity to work from home with their children, they have transformed countless hours of hard work, research, and trial and error into a formula that works for everyone. And they’ve taken that formula and refined it into an automated system for their TiDom Inc. team. TiDom is an abbreviated form of the words “time freedom” and it describes perfectly what members can achieve when they join this top-tier business with Sally’s and Gail’s team. “This is such a powerful business,” one team member says. “TiDom has a

team member. “The advertising is done for us, and best of all, I don’t have to close my sales. That is such a huge relief! It’s so great to have a roadmap. It takes the guesswork out of running my business.” Gail explains, “We have made it as turnkey as possible. We’ve eliminated the things that cause people to fail and are completely committed to our team’s success. It doesn’t matter where you are in our organization. If you are on our team, you’ll receive our full attention.”
"Sally and I created TDiPros with one thought in mind," Gail says. "And that thought can be communicated with one word. Success. Quite simply put, Our Vision Is Your Success." - Gail Rahill
Gail says, “It’s great to be making this money, but what’s even better is investing in our team members’ success by buying each of them advertising so that they can hit the ground running. It’s a big reason why our team duplication is so high.”
TiDOM offers a wide range of product packages that appeal to people who desire to improve the overall quality of their financial and personal "health." "I love the products that are available," Sally says. "I have been using the health and wellness platform to meet my fitness goals for this year, and I'm on track to do just that. I'm thrilled." - Sally Darling
Sally and Gail are so committed to their members’ success that they invest 20% of their commissions to buy advertising for new members. And, as part of their marketing system, they teach every new team member to do exactly the same for each of their new members. “When you invest in advertising,” says Sally, “your income grows exponentially, so we teach our members to follow this simple strategy. Duplication is all about simplicity.”

So when a global company is open in 24 countries worldwide and endorsed by one of the wealthiest people in the world, who features this company on his hit primetime reality TV show not once but twice, says you should find out more, would you want to hear more about it? What if this same company said they’d pay you generously for helping others get paid when they pay their monthly essential bills, would you want to know even more? Shane Douglas did, and it’s paid off in an incredible way for him. It’s been 10 years since this Idaho native living in a town of just 1,500 people

When they sign up on your online store, you receive a residual commission every month when they pay their bills. It’s that simple.” The key to his success, he says, is that he doesn’t complicate his business; he just goes out and shares the company’s program and his personal story. ”Before you join some other company that makes pie in the sky promises,

Combat Pay Can You Run a Business from a Combat Zone? The ways to operate a home-based business run far and wide. You can operate a traditional business from a home office, full- or part-time. Or perform a service business based from a van or truck. Many even run a home business around their “day job.” But did you ever think you could run a home business from a combat zone? Well in fact, you can. Hoo-Rah! Among the hundreds of thousands of U.S service members who served in a “combat theatre,” such as Iraq or Afghanistan, there are undoubtedly many who kept their entrepreneurial edges sharpened during their “day jobs” as service members. I was one of them. I recently returned from deployment to the Mideast. My assignment took me on regular trips to Afghanistan (I am now retired from the U.S. Navy, rank of Captain). I learned some good business operation tips in these duties traveling through Afghanistan. First, I had about six months to prepare I recently returned from for my overseas assignment. During that deployment to the Mideast. My time, I divested myself from most day-toassignment took me on regular day responsibilities; particularly those that trips to Afghanistan. required timely responses. I also worked hard to get several projects done that had long sat in my in-box. But no matter how much you streamline your operation before a military mobilization, there are still items I had to do as a business owner. So my next step was to get “overly” organized. I started out my one year tour with a long trip in Afghanistan. I quickly learned it was impossible to get complex business work done under those difficult circumstances. So good organization was key to dealing with critical business items. When in a combat theatre you will have routine down times (i.e. later in evening or during lunch). You also need to be ready for “pop-up” breaks, such as long waits for military flight. During these breaks I could usually keep up on routine business communications. First, this required finding good internet. Surprising enough, for a small fee ($15 or so daily), I found great high speed Internet that allowed me to keep up with work during those breaks. Once my Internet broke down, and 15 minutes later there was a knock at the door to my hooch. A polite Afghan tech rep stepped in, who spoke perfect English. He had my Internet back up immediately. Richard Henderson (Captain, USN (Ret)) Along with good Internet, you needed holding a drone in Afghanistan. to be a “mobile warrior” when staying connected in Iraq or Afghanistan. Key to this is a good full size laptop with all options, and a secure padded bag to carry it in! I made sure my computer was fully operational and “bug free” before deploying. I also purchased a duplicate back-up computer, in event my laptop crashed during deployment. I also purchased a large mobile phone, synched to my laptop. With low-cost Skype, my phone communications were seamless to stateside (point – click – call). A few times I even had to use my Skype for military communications, when my government-issued cell phone went AWOL and would not connect! Overall, however, I could barely keep up with business work while traveling in Afghanistan. There just was not enough time to get even my military job done. All I could do was keep my finger in the dike, deal with critical issues, and wait until I got back to my main base to deal with anything substantive. But I was able to at least keep my hands on the helm, and the business going. So yes, you can operate a home-based business from a combat zone!

Direct Sales Riches! Tips for Running a Profitable Home-Based Direct Sales Business By a Panel of Direct Sales Experts

aking precious free time to drive to a local mall, scour racks and displays endlessly for the perfect hors d’oeuvre tray, then having to wait in line for an extra 15 minutes is not ideal for busy individuals. The e-commerce industry has seen a vital boom in the last few years, where apps like Poshmark and Tradesy allow users to sell and make purchases conveniently on his or her smartphone, and many people turn to quick shopping online. Luckily for direct sales business owners, the market is at a perfect place for gaining prospects, as most consumers are ready to pull out their phone to make an order rather than drive to a store. Our social culture also enjoys spending time bonding together, and hosting a combo party/sales demonstration taps into that need for companionship. The convenient and personal nature of direct sales leads to a quick following of engaged prospects. In this issue’s cover story, a panel of direct sales experts offer advice and secrets to achieving success in a home-based direct sales business. What is direct sales? PHONE TIPS Phone Tips for Direct Sales Prospects By Barb Sibbing Phone calls to your direct sales prospects are essential for working your business. You could take the chicken way out and just send your direct sales prospects an email about your direct sales business. Been there done that, tried that and trust me that doesn’t work. What you do is hope your prospects open your email and just fall in love with your products and your direct sales opportunity and rush to the phone to call you. HA! They will not. Phone calls are where you not only start to build your direct sales business; they are also where you start to build a relationship with your prospect. It’s important to build a relationship with your prospect, get to know them and let them know you. You have to take “you” out of it and put your prospects front and center. There are some proven methods that can help you give off a positive energy and to sound confident as you are talking to your prospects.
“The fortune is in the followup … the initial contact to your direct sales prospect is just the start of the process — following up with your prospect is important to see where they are in their process of making a decision.” ■
Stand up and walk around when talking.
■
Be authentic, be real and listen to your prospect.
■
Most importantly, relax - if you are relaxed then your prospect will also be relaxed.
■
Talk slowly.
■
Don’t forget to breath — this is crucial!
It’s important to use your natural voice and language when talking to your direct sales prospects. Did you know that you speak differently than you write? When you use scripts, read it through first in front of a mirror. You want the script to sound natural and not like a canned speech. If the scripts have contractions in them (don’t, can’t, etc.) and if you don’t talk Continued on page 16

using contractions, take them out. Making your script sound natural is accomplished through extensive practice.

Phone tips conclusion for talking to your direct sales prospects: The final step, yet very critical step for your direct sales business is the follow-up. Remember, “The fortune is in the follow-up.” The initial contact to your direct sales prospect is just the start of the process—following up with your prospect is important to see where they are in making a decision.
■
PDA/iPhone — sync it with Outlook or Google Calendar and your PDA/ iPhone will remind you if you are on the go.
■
Set up a notebook with number dividers 1-31. After you make your notes on the prospect’s sheet, move the sheet to the correct number category (which represents a day in a month). Then each day, go to the number and call each prospect back that is under that divider.

How do you remember to follow up with direct sales prospects? A few techniques that could aid in helping you to remember your follow-up appointment are as follows: Use Outlook or Google Calendar and set up a reminder so it will pop up one or two hours before the appointment.
Note it on your paper calendar.
Try all of these ideas to see which works best for you when calling your prospects.
So when you set a follow-up day and time with your direct sales prospects, CALL THEM BACK!

you were invited to on Facebook because the event invite got lost in your notifications? And I know that multiple times a week, I either hear from someone that they never got an e-mail I sent or I’m telling someone the same thing (usually because said e-mail ended up in a spam folder and was inadvertently deleted). So, while I love these communication channels when they work, they just aren’t as reliable as regular snail mail. Both Facebook and e-mail are not taken as seriously by those you’re inviting as getting an invitation in the mail. Think about it. If you’re taking your mail out of your mailbox and interspersed between all of those envelopes with windows in the front (you know the ones...they require that you write a check as a response), there’s a colored envelope with a handwritten or plain typed label in the address section. Which envelope are you going to open first? The one that looks like more fun, right? Finally, if you as a direct sales/party plan representative take the step of mailing out your party plan host’s invitations for them, you’re getting the mailing list of their addresses from your host. This provides a couple important things for you:
■
■
First of all, the task the host tends to hate the most is coming up with who to invite and addressing those labels. Once you have that list, the likelihood that she’ll actually hold the party on the original date goes way, way up because that task is behind her. Secondly, once you have the list, it’s like having an insurance policy for their party. In the event that they decide to cancel within 10 days to 2 weeks prior to their party, your response can be, “Oh, I already mailed your invitations.” (Then get them in the mail that day if you haven’t mailed them). They will tend to go ahead and hold the party rather than have to call everyone and cancel.
Here’s the bottom line. Do I think you should use evites and Facebook events to spread the word about your home parties? Absolutely! However, use evites as a secondary reminder method that goes hand in hand with the invitation you’ve mailed. INCREASING OUTSIDE ORDERS How to Increase Outside Orders Immediately By Caterina Rando, MA, MCC Wouldn’t it be great if you knew every party would be a huge success before you even walked in the door? There is an easy way to ensure a successful party every time. Increase outside orders. Even when you have a great hostess who is passing out catalogs and talking up her party, it is often the case that she is separated from that catalog when it is in front of a show guest. When someone looks at that catalog and turns it over to see the name on the back, they see the name of the consultant—not the hostess who they know so they usually put the catalog back down. Put a label on the front of the catalog that says Mary (or whoever) is having a show, and that she is taking pre-orders. Include sales tax and payment info and mention about booking Continued on page 18

TEAM TRAINING Direct Sales Team Training Game for Fun Meetings By Martin Kruse One activity that is part of running a direct sales business is to hold regular team training meetings. Making sure that your meetings are fun so that the consultants continue to come back is essential. Consider using themes for your next meeting. When you use a theme for your team training meeting, you build anticipation for the meeting among your salespeople. Use the invitations you send out as a chance to hype up your upcoming training session. “Fight the Tumbleweeds” Meeting Theme Generating revenue during traditionally slow parts of the year can be a challenge. If you want to put together a training session that helps your sales professionals gather business in the off months, then use an Old West theme. Put the picture of a tumbleweed on the invitation and let your salespeople know that your training session will help them clean up their one-horse town and bring income back to their wallets. The tumbleweed represents the prospects of low sales and the solution is your training session. “The Buffet” Meeting Theme In the direct sales business, it is important that each consultant maximizes revenue at every event. Use the image of a buffet as the line of products laid out for the customers to choose from. Your training session will show your salespeople how to use add-on sales to increase revenue. It is like someone piling on items at a buffet. 18

is put a label on the front of the catalog that says Mary (or whoever) is having a show, and that she is taking pre-orders. Include sales tax and payment info and mention about booking their own show.” Hold the meeting at a buffet restaurant to drive the point home. Entice your sales team to attend a training meeting with a theme. It can be easier to grab your team’s interest and help them to remember the material you are teaching. Stay focused on one topic and create a theme that your team will never forget. When you incorporate these direct sales business tips into your business, you will never worry about getting the consultants to the meetings again. SALE TEAM RETENTION Direct Sales Success - Five Retention Strategies to Make Consultants Stick By Lisa Young The first one is almost always the toughest, as you try to figure out what you could have done to keep that consultant on your team. We scratch our heads, chalk it up as a lesson learned, and eventually we get over it. Alternatively, you know in your heart that they didn’t really “want it,” so you try not to think too much about it and carry on. Team retention is a big deal in direct sales. I’ve seen leaders add 50 new recruits in a single month, and three months later, less than half of them remain. A lot of hard work goes into building a team. It should not be for naught. We should not rest in the murky waters of “a third are joining, a third are staying and a third are leaving.” That’s too much work for too little return in my book! It’s rare for me to lose a direct sales team member that’s engaged in the business. You’ve probably heard it said before that “consultants don’t quit with a full calendar.” In my years as a direct sales leader, it became clear that an engaged consultant sticks around. I made it my business to www.homebusinessmag.com

Angelina Jolie Pitt The A-list Actress Shares How Her Work as a Director Strengthened Her Relationships, Working with Brad Pitt, and Balancing Demanding Career Schedules to Achieve Greater Success.
A
ngelina Jolie Pitt is one of the most remarkable women in Hollywood. She has carved out a successful career as actress, mother, and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. More recently, her personal struggle against breast cancer saw her undergo a preventive double mastectomy and subsequent removal of her ovaries as a determined response to having inherited the same deadly genetic defect that ultimately led to the death of her beloved mother. Throughout all this, she has not only continued working, but even took an admitted “risk” with her marriage by writing and directing By the Sea, a dark personal drama. The risk involved casting herself and husband Brad Pitt as a wealthy married couple engaged in constant warfare while staying at an isolated seaside hotel in southern France. Shooting for By the Sea began almost immediately following their marriage last August, and this resulted in a working “honeymoon” that saw Brad and Angelina engaged in a pitched psychological battle for virtually the entire two month shoot. “It was a struggle for us,” Jolie Pitt says. “I knew it was going to test our marriage, but in the end we came out of it stronger than ever, even though it meant pushing ourselves to the limit every day and then having to resume our lives as parents in the evenings. But in the end, you come out thinking that if you can get through this kind of experience, then you can get through any challenge, and that left us with a very strong feeling about each other.” The film marks Pitt Jolie’s third outing as a director following In the Land of Milk and Honey and Unbroken. This was also the first time that the world’s most famous celebrity couple has worked together since Mr & Mrs Smith, the film that first brought them together. Pitt’s own perspective on the shoot was even

Talented Trio Proves the Power of the Internet SprezzaBox Keeps Men Looking Good and Generates Nearly $1M in the Process By Andrew Matthews
T
he power of technology has been proven in an incredible way, and the masterminds behind SprezzaBox could not be more excited…and neither can their plethora of satisfied customers. A leading men’s monthly accessory subscription box brand, SprezzaBox provides its subscribers with carefully curated boxes of 4 to 5 fashion goods (ties, socks and more) and one grooming product for as low as $28 per month. Launched in May 2014, the company targets younger gentlemen working in an office setting who aim to be stylish without breaking the bank. As such, SprezzaBox admirably generated approximately $1,000,000 in sales in its first year. The name of the company was derived from the word “Sprezza,” an Italian slang term that means looking good without seemingly trying. And being that the company delivers tangible products that must be physically delivered, it made perfect sense to simply call it SprezzaBox. “SprezzaBox was created

to fill the need for those who cannot afford a personal stylist and simply don’t have the time to find great quality brands at the right price,” states CEO Philip Sblendorio. “ SprezzaBox attributes a great deal of its growth to the power of the Internet. Philip adds, “My Instagram account began to grow and was very influential in the menswear space. I wanted to create something unique and market it through my Instagram page.” Ironically, neither Philip nor his co-founders have a fashion background. Philip lends his success to his 8+ years’ background in finance; COO Lenin Batista spent years working in the real estate industry before managing back-end operations; and Creative Director Disi Fei, who currently lends her fine eye of styling and building a strong social media following, spent 6+ years as a public school teacher. Philip reflects, “We turned one of our co-founder’s second bedroom into a home office where we answered emails, handled

marketing, and packed boxes.” The company has since moved into a large office space in New York City, and they now have several employees to help run the operation. They also have a warehouse wherein they manage their own fulfillment. It is the company’s desire to flourish into a household brand, and from the looks of things, they’re on the right track. You Need Money to Make Money Get It for Your Home Business Through Unsecured Business Credit By Monica Main
B
usiness credit is critical to an entrepreneur in today’s new economy. Unfortunately, most entrepreneurs don’t know how to take advantage of unsecured business credit to start and grow their businesses. I was once one of those entrepreneurs until, quite by accident, I stumbled into a brand new world consisting of the power of unsecured business credit.
Years ago when applying for two different credit cards at the same time through the same bank, I was given an unsecured credit limit of $5,000 for my personal credit card and an unsecured credit limit of $18,500 for my business credit card. This is when a light bulb came on for me. Banks give a lot more unsecured credit to businesses, even if they’re brand new companies, than they will give to an individual even when basing their decision on your same personal FICO score! Since then, I’ve been able to teach thousands of students
how to get this type of credit for real estate investing, starting a business, or whatever they want this type of cash for. Personal credit is critical in gaining access to business credit. The good news is that, no matter how bad your personal credit, the majority of your delinquencies and “bad marks” can be cleaned up within 6 months to a year. The bad news is that you’ll need to have at least a mid-FICO of over 700 points to be able to tap into the power of unsecured business credit. You’ll also need to file for an S corporation in your home state along with an EIN (Employer Identification Number) which is equivalent to your company’s social security number. These are tools necessary to start getting loads of unsecured business credit. Once you’ve done all of the above, you can quickly and easily get chunks of business credit ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 from unsecured business credit cards to start-up

BUSINESSES & OPPORTUNITIES
Can You Really Turn
a Hobby into a Business? By Nick Goode, Commercial Director at Sage One
T
he whole hobby-to-business proposition is a little misleading—primarily because we need to rethink the word “hobby.” When we hear it, we think of those fun, voluntary pastimes that bring us enjoyment and help us make the most of our free time: reading, collecting stamps, community theatre—they’re all things that we do because we enjoy doing them. But is simply enjoying stamp collecting enough to translate your hobby into a successful, thriving, and sustainable career? What we’re really talking about here is “passion.” When your hobby becomes something all-consuming—that thing you think about all day long during work and jump right into as soon as your time is yours again—that’s more than a hobby; that’s a passion with potential. And that passion is what represents something that can be both personally and professionally sustainable. Here are a few areas to consider before taking the leap. Social Media — It’s Already Working for You Your first stop on this journey from hobby to business is unquestionably: Get Social. In my view, social media is still a relatively untapped resource—and it’s one tool every hobbyist already has at their disposal to do the most basic market research. Start with Facebook and search for people with businesses like the one you’re considering. Since it’s unlikely your idea is going to be of Teslalevel uniqueness within the small business community, there will be many similar businesses you can learn from. Which appeal to followers the most? Which are most successful and why? Steal ideas with pride and connect with followers to learn as much as you can. When researching this topic, I immediately turned to my Twitter community for insight. Using the hashtag #hobby2business, I posted a photograph, tagged eight of my followers from the small business world, and asked for their advice on turning a hobby into a business.

Differentiate From Day One What makes a good business? Remember the seven P’s of marketing: product, price, promotion, place, packaging, positioning, and people. As an entrepreneur, you’re going to need to define all of these things in order to figure out where you stand in the marketplace—and how you can do it better than everyone else.
“Build community. Without social media, your use of it, and the connections you make with the people who will help you, your hobby will most likely remain just that.” First, intimately understand the product you want to sell. Even if it’s a service, think of it as a product—what are its features? Why are they appealing? What is the size of your target market, and what percentage of that market do you anticipate will buy it? What are others charging for something similar? You’ll also need to consider the logistics of getting your product to the people who want to buy it. If you’re selling online, where would your consumers naturally go to get your
And while it’s important to identify these things, don’t overthink it. Unless you are inventing a patented product (which is rare in the hobby-to-business landscape) you’re probably going to differentiate on price, service, audience, and the product itself in comparison to what’s already out there. Embrace these things and use them to help set yourself apart from the competition. Do the Math and Get More Help Fundamentally, every business needs to answer this simple equation to find success: revenue minus cost. To make sure your business is financially stable, start by figuring out how much income you need along with how much product you need to sell, and what your costs are. Then you’ll need to calculate how to manage the cash flow (the money you need to make the business work) as you ramp up. Keep going over these numbers. If you are useless at numbers, don’t give up—get help! It’s a given that you will be weak in some areas of your business—after all, your passion for your hobby is not enough to keep a business up and running smoothly. The good news is that anyone in marketing, finance commercial management, product management, or your bookkeeper can help Continued on page 30

How To Make Money With Non-Lethal Self Defense Products? For 29 years, 1000’s of people have made $5000, $10,000 a month and more by selling the 500+ much in demand, non-lethal, self-defense products provided by Safety Technology. Here are 7 WAYS you can make money with our products.
6. SELL TO BUSINESSES - Sell surveillance cameras to convenience stores; stun batons, Tasers or metal detectors to bars and nightclubs; pepper sprays or personal alarms to hospitals for their nurses, etc. All these things have been successfully done by other Authorized Dealers…plus more!
1. SELLING AT GUN SHOWS - There is no better way to sell anything, then face to face. Selling at gun shows allows you to put your products in front of people who are definitely interested in defending themselves, their families and their home.
7. SELLING ON THE INTERNET WITH YOUR OWN WEBSITE – Without a doubt, selling on the Internet is the best way to reach the largest number of customers. We can even build a money making website for you and teach you how to sell on the Internet.
2. HOME PARTY PLAN SELLING - Yes, just like Pampered Chef or Tupperware! Except you get to keep all the money. You don’t have to accept a paltry commission from the mother company…you are the company. All the profit is yours!
There are many other ways to sell these self-defense and surveillance products. How would you sell them?
3. SELL AT FLEA MARKETS AND SWAP MEETS - Another great way to get the products in front of people. The advantage here is costs less and can do it at the same spot every weekend. Some flea markets even allow you to set up permanent displays. 4. SET UP ROUTE OF GUN STORES, PAWN SHOPS, NAIL SALONS, BEAUTY SALONS - We suggest starting with our pepper spray displays as a way to get your foot in the door. Great way to receive residual income...money on a regular basis because the stores reorder. 5. AUCTION SITES, SUCH AS EBAY AND AMAZON - One way to get your products exposed to a very large number of buyers is to sell on eBay and Amazon. Not only are the auction sites good for selling products, but also lead generation.

Can You Really Turn a Hobby into a Business? Continued from page 28
If we all did this, we’d change the world faster. Define the why today and reach for the highest branch.
“Ask yourself why you want to make a career out of your hobby. Boil down the essence of your purpose because it will drive you to success.”
Be Ready To Put Yourself First
you. And don’t forget your friends and neighbors: your community includes people who will do things pro bono, provided that you can help them back. Be open to this. The social-first generation is all about mutual support (and that’s what makes it awesome!).
To make sure your business is financially stable, start by figuring out how much income you need along with how much product you need to sell, and what your costs are.
Your “Why” Should Not Be Because You Hate Commuting In his book Start with Why?, Simon Sinek challenges what and how thinking. While what and how are the yin and yang of everything, why is the driving force. So why didn’t I start the article with the why? Because the hobby-to-business process is agile rather than step-by-step—you need to consider each of these areas over and over; you can refine your why as you go. But first, ask yourself why you want to make a career out of your hobby. Boil down the essence of your purpose because it will drive you to success. Without identifying the why, you will not tap into the real reason you
are changing your life. If that sounds bold, it is—you’re changing your life for a reason and you should be able to explain what that reason is; whether it’s to save your health, become the person you were told you couldn’t be, or because the real you is not stuck in a call center, defining the real, fundamental reasons why you want to transform your passion into your business will help you ultimately be more successful. Try to complete this sentence: I am doing this to [enter bold life-changing statement here].

Corporations create context, like a river that flows: join in and drive and you’ll be part of the solution; float along and you’ll end up as part of the problem. We’ve all been there at one time or another. Your hobby-to-business journey includes the acceptance that you will now be the river. No one else is going to create the environment, motivation, and drive you need to get things accomplished. As the owner of a business, you are on your own. To be the best you can be, put yourself first. For me, it’s important to exercise every day, eat healthfully, and get the right amount of rest. If that meant buying a spinning bike for my house or cooking and freezing healthy meals in batches to save time—so be it. Make sure you can identify what keeps you happy, healthy, and grounded before you make the jump to living your passion on a full-time basis. When you are your own company, you’re the source of your own success; make sure the journey is worth it.

Whether it’s to save your health, become the person you were told you couldn’t be, or because the real you is not stuck in a call center, deďŹ ning the real, fundamental reasons why you want to transform your passion into your business will help you be more successful. Conclusion Now more than ever we are encouraged to do what we love. After all, life’s too short for a boring job, bad bosses, and doing something
you hate just to earn a paycheck. And because technology now enables work to be a thing you do rather than a place you go, the opportunity to identify and develop unique career pathways is greater than ever! For example, social, political, and environmental awareness has helped organizations such as Freecycle to flourish; a global movement toward embracing “makers has built revolutionary sites like Etsy. We’re blessed, as a society, with an unprecedented combination of time, technology, information, and the quantified self: yes, we want it all.
Business Is Both Fun and Dull All the Time Minimize the impact of these dull tasks so you can focus on the fun stuff in your business: • Get a bookkeeper or an accountant from day one. Explain that you are a very small business on a shoestring budget, and that you don’t need corporate advice—you just want to get the basics right. • You’re going to want mobile and online offerings first, so find a bookkeeper who does the same. You’ll get the advice and help you need without spending time and money traveling to meet them in person.
And we can have it, too—as long as we channel our passions in the right places. For all of you who are thinking about turning your hobby into a business, I hope you found these insights helpful and I wish you luck!
• Use an accounting app that your bookkeeper recommends. Every dollar you spend on your business counts towards your success. • Learn the basics of accounting, invoicing, expense management, tax returns, and cash flow. Accept that your success depends on it. You don’t have to be an expert but you will fail without mastering the basics of accounting.

Small Business Optimization
Tips for 2016 Apply Productivity Apps to Save Time and Effort By John Oechsle, CEO of Swiftpage

t’s time to start considering the exciting opportunities 2016 will have to offer your small business. You’re probably thinking, “If only I had more time today!” but what you should really be doing is focusing on areas you can improve your business every day regardless of your long list of priorities. Your growth in 2016 will depend on the strategic decisions you make now, so make sure the choices you make give your business’ bottom line the best chance for growth. Here are a few areas to look at in order to optimize your small business’ potential for growth in 2016.

time could very well be worth a dozen haphazard posts that don’t have a clear purpose. Your small business can’t afford to waste time on ineffective social media content, so make sure whoever is responsible for your social accounts is educated and empowered to positively impact the company’s success. Focus on the Team The final ingredient to optimizing your small business is to analyze how it runs. In order to enjoy a successful 2016, you need to invest in training, educating and guiding your employees. Your team is the life force of your small business, and it’s worth taking the time to make sure they have the tools they need to be efficient and effective in their roles. This
When you gear up to work on your goals for the new year, make sure you’re ready to organize your data, strategize how you’ll handle your social media platforms and focus on strengthening your team. These three areas are keys for optimizing small business success. Remember to benchmark your progress, too, so you can keep track of your improvement for years to come. H. MARKETING & SALES
Sales Culture and Customer Service: Perfect Together! By Todd Cohen
B
uilding a sales culture and creating a culture of exceptional customer service are closely linked but they are not the same. In fact, great customer service is a vital subset of a great sales culture—two processes that fuel one another. You cannot truly have one without the other. A sales culture means that everyone’s in sales and that everyone knows the way in which what they do helps a customer say “yes.” Regardless of the position you hold in a company, you do something every single day that has a systemic (and in some cases direct) impact on a customer’s decision to do business with you. This is a proactive and conscious belief system that you and the organization uphold. It is built on a foundation of trust that begins with the CEO conveying a culture that every employee matters, and acknowledging that creating a happy customer is not easy. Everyone has their own examples of when they received extraordinary and subpar customer service. Southwest Airlines is an excellent example of an organization that employs a sales culture and also provides exceptional customer service, turning profits while making their customers happy along the way. On the other hand, some businesses seem more than willing to sacrifice long-term (and potentially lifetime) customers for that quarter’s metrics or stats sheet. So what is the relationship between a great sales culture and a culture of great customer service? They are very tied to each other in several ways. 1. Customer service is about making sure clients are happy before and after a purchase, and that’s why people come back. Right? Delivering great customer service and taking care of issues and complaints is a big reason for repeat purchases and increased sales. Everyone who comes into contact with clients and customers has a role in making them happy. It’s not just the frontline person who owns customer service. Everyone does. That demonstrates that everyone’s in sales— sales culture.

2. Metrics are not customer service, and they are not sales culture. Yes, things have to be measured Customer service is about knowing that when a sterling level of service so people can happens, it has a systemic effect on the company and the customer, who fill out some remembers it and buys more. form and say, “I did it.” Cool. What exactly did you do? Congratulations The real measure of that you beat some arbitrary metric that says you delivered good service. The real measure customer service is the of customer service is the proactive behavior proactive behavior that that occurs when entrepreneurs know how occurs when entrepreneurs their actions impact the client, the way in which their actions lead to more sales, and know how their actions when they take the time to build the bridge impact the client, the way between what they did and how it had a posin which their actions lead itive effect. That takes time and a proactive attitude of showing people that what they did to more sales, and when makes people want to come back.
“
3. Customer service is so MUCH more than answering the phone nicely or being measured on how quickly one responds to a client’s problem. Customer service is about knowing that when a sterling level of service happens, it has a systemic effect on the company and the customer, who remembers it and buys more. One of the basic guidelines of sales culture is that everyone impacts the customer whether they know it or not, and it happens all the time. People need to be encouraged to recognize this fact and point it out every day.
“ Regardless of the position you hold in a company, you do something every single day that has a systemic (and in some cases direct) impact on a customer’s decision to do business with you
they take the time to build the bridge between what they did and how it had a positive effect.
”
4. Making clients happy takes a team. Your virtual sales team—those who work behind the scenes to solve problems— are the sales culture anchor. Knowing where to turn in the event of an issue arising means getting to the client quickly and correctly. When a company transfers customers to “the next person who can fix this” it creates a massive gap in effectiveness and efficiency, and can leave customers angry—which hurts business. When you foster a sales culture your employees realize their value is not merely tied to their title. They are people with a value proposition who can truly articulate what they do and know what others do as well. Continued on page 36

5. A great sales culture builds a better company, better products and creates more satisfied clients. The people delivering customer service have a direct impact on the clients’ desire to make referrals. manual. It’s not a flowchart. Delivering the right stuff means your staff has a mentality to do the best and right thing and not feel forced to do it. You can’t make someone have the right mindset, but you can encourage, train and motivate people to use their best and bring the right attitude every day to the job. So you see that sales culture and customer service work hand in hand. Sales culture and customer service are not the byproducts of a spreadsheet that shows some details that need to be fixed reactively. The principles and building blocks of sales culture are alive and well in the workings of highly successful customer service departments. We are all in sales, and we are all in customer service because we all have a chance to make a client happy, more satisfied, and a strong referral source for future business. Todd Cohen, CSP is an accomplished and sought after speaker, sales culture expert and author of Everyone’s in Sales and Everyone’s in Sales; STOP Apologizing. Todd’s dynamic and motivational presentations are based on the foundation that regardless of career path or position, everyone is a salesperson. fter years of motivating women through books, audio programs and annual conferences, Stacia Pierce launched her coaching business to meet the demands of her growing audience.
As a serial entrepreneur, Stacia has always provided products and services to help women look and feel their best. At 19, she wrote her first book Beauty: The Inside Story, which helped her launch a speaking career. By 22, she owned and ran a full service beauty salon, created a makeup line, and ran a clothing store. She credits all of her fashion and beauty experience as the foundation to build her current company as a success and business coach. Almost twenty years ago, Stacia launched the Women’s Success Conference, an annual conference to empower women to be their very best. Wearing Positivity for Others Entrepreneur Launches Inspiring Apparel Company in the Wake of Mother’s Breast Cancer Diagnosis By Sherilyn Colleen

fter Billy Law’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, he and his siblings decided to create a fundraiser to help with treatment expenses. “Seeing all the words of inspiration voiced toward my mother and being the introverted being that I am, I saw a subtle, anonymous way that I can make a difference in the lives of others,” Billy shares. His experience in graphic design and screen printing made a simple t-shirt campaign a viable choice. With social media support, over $1,000 was raised in just two weeks’ time. Before starting Livespire Apparel and in the early stages of the company, Billy worked in the printing industry, served as Marketing Coordinator for a local real estate company, and most recently served as Account Manager and Graphic Designer for a local marketing firm. Livespire Apparel is changing the way consumers can make a difference by pairing each product with a specific nonprofit organization

He reaches out to relevant blogs and other media outlets for more organic exposure. 6 Strategies to Maintain Productivity in Your Home Office Stay Productive in Your Freelance Pursuits
HOME OFFICE
By Field Nation
L
eaving a highly structured workplace for the home office can be a huge relief and quite exciting. Freelancing has become increasingly popular in all domains. Creative individuals are finding ways to contribute in the comfort of wherever they want to be. As your office becomes your couch, productivity can get harder to maintain. When Netflix is a click of a button away, it’s hard to ignore. Here are some tips for maintaining a standard of productivity in your freelance pursuits: 1. Change Locations Sometimes you just have to leave the home office and change locations. The appeal of freelancing is that you can work from wherever, not just your couch. Many freelancers find themselves stuck in a housebound routine where the only location change is from the kitchen table to the couch. You can go to a local café or coffee shop; these places tend to offer Wi-Fi. If you don’t need Wi-Fi for your current task, head down to the beach or park and get some sun while you write. Getting out of the house provides a refreshing change of scenery that will certainly generate productivity. Looking at the same walls of your house can provide an overwhelming distraction from your tasks at hand. Being in persistent comfort may create a sense of fatigue and laziness provided by the sounds and smells of your familiar surroundings. Comfort means relaxation, and relaxation often means a lack of productivity. A new location forces you out of the comfort zone of your home and into a setting of less immediate security. This lack of easy comfort will force you to concentrate on your projects. A new location also offers a breath of fresh air. Being around other people, particularly productive people, creates a contagious spark of energy. Sometimes the best way to be productive is to put yourself in a place where it would be odd to not be productive. You can’t kick back in your underwear and watch Game of Thrones in a public setting, or at least I wouldn’t recommend trying. 2. Sleep Cycle Without the routine demands of getting to

decent hour and waking up before 10am offers a fresh perspective on your day.” People who get enough sleep at the right times are the most healthy and successful. Going to bed at a decent hour and waking up before 10am offers a fresh perspective on your day. By waking up with the normal morning crowd, you are finding ways to be a part of the normal routines of society. By sticking to a sleep cycle and work schedule, you force yourself to feel as though you are not completely removed from the flow of society. Sleeping through the morning and well into the afternoon can lead to a lack of
3. Exercise We’ve all heard the benefits of exercise and probably feel some sense of guilt for not doing it. For freelancers, exercise can be an incredibly beneficial way to organize your day and generate some energy. Exercise naturally increases endorphins and blood flow that results in mental stimulation and productivity. This doesn’t have to be running five miles every morning. Just doing some basic jumping jacks every day to increase blood flow is valuable. Exercise is the key to cardiovascular health, which is directly related to stamina. An increased stamina allows you to work productively for longer periods of time. Exercise is also a way of improving overall mental health. Increasing your heart rate daily helps to manage anxiety and depression. The release of serotonin helps you to feel more positive and capable of taking on your day. A solid sleep cycle is incredibly important for exercise. People who feel as though they have more time in their day tend to exercise more. 4. Dress the Part
Exercise is a way of improving overall mental health, as increasing your heart rate daily helps to manage anxiety and depression.
Along with getting out of the house, it’s important to feel good in the clothes you wear. They don’t say dress for success for nothing. A recent study by Northwestern University researchers found that certain clothing can highly influence a person’s psychological processes. Wearing formal business attire increases a sense of competency and self-confidence Continued on page 42

that directly translates to productivity. If you feel good about yourself, you’ll feel good about the work you’re doing.
6. Give Yourself a Break The life of a freelancer can get very stressful very quickly. Freelancing often involves developing creative content on your own. You are not following strict guidelines that can train you into a mindless routine. These are not monotonous tasks that pass time. You have to think, reflect, and create. It is important to take frequent breaks in between the mental stimulation.
I am certainly not suggesting you throw on a suit and go to your local coffee shop. I’m saying a collared shirt and some decent shoes (not flipflops) can create a better sense of purpose and self-respect. A collar alone does not equal increased work productivity. The improved mental state from the increased confidence will help work productivity.
“Subconsciously
5. Music is Your Friend Light background music can increase work productivity. This is especially true with tasks that are a bit mundane and repetitive. Subconsciously following and focusing on a melody can heighten your focus on tasks at hand. Most importantly, your favorite music can put you in a good mood. The aforementioned positive mental state will increase workflow and stamina. The life of a freelancer can be void of consistent human contact. Naturally, my main advice would be to make sure you are seeing friends and family. However, as deadlines pile up and you need your space to work, music is an easy way to provide some company.
Wearing formal business attire increases a sense of competency and selfconfidence that directly translates to productivity.
For the freelancer, music can be your friend throughout the day. Especially if you choose to work from home and away from people, hearing some voices in the background can decrease a sense of isolation that may cause depression and anxiety.
following and focusing on a melody can heighten your focus on tasks at hand.” It is completely inaccurate to assume the longer you stare at your computer the more you will get done. Research analyzed by writer Phyllis Korkki states, “A growing body of evidence shows that taking regular breaks from mental tasks improves productivity and creativity – and that skipping breaks can lead to stress and exhaustion.” Even if you’re spending

Bone Broth for the Body Entrepreneur Launches Organic Bone Broth Company to Heal Health Problems By Sherilyn Colleen
O
ne of the nation’s hottest health food trends started in Steven Kadlec’s home kitchen in San Diego, California, a little less than a year ago. Looking for a way to heal his own digestive issues and unable to find what he needed at the grocery store, Steven went into his kitchen and started cooking bone broth. After seeing his drastic improvement in health, friends and family started requesting to buy the slow cooked bone broth from him. Word-of-mouth increased his customer base, and before long, he took his bone broth to the local farmers markets. The product was an instant hit, and soon people began to ask if it could be shipped across the nation. Steven’s successful bone broth company, called Au Bon Broth Bone Broth, specializes in creating healthy, delicious, and organic bone broth made with a combination of pasture raised, free-range chicken, turkey bones, and
grass-fed organic beef bones. The broth can be used as a gourmet drink and can also be used to cook rice and risottos, and as a base for soups. Au Bon Broth Bone Broth ships to tens of thousands of customers nationwide looking for ways to help heal their digestive and health challenges through the power of proper nutrition. Customer retention is very high due to the quality of the product, and many customers excitedly refer new customers. The business is conducted from his home office and is mainly promoted through online mediums such as search engine optimization and social media. Within three years, Steven envisions further expanding out the product lines and selling in every retail grocery store within the United States. Steven considers the mastery and success of a completely new business arena to be

Self-Taught in Health and Nutrition Harrowing Life Struggles Inspire Woman to Create Holistic Health and Wellness Site By Sherilyn Colleen
S
tephanie always wanted to work from home, and longed to be able to start her workday without having to rush off to an office. There would be no fighting ghastly traffic, braving bad weather, or having to call in sick. Her first inspiration for running a home business came from the example her parents set. With a full dentist office built onto the front of their home, her mother and father ran a very successful dentistry business in comfort and convenience. Stephanie decided to start her home-based business after her father suffered a stroke, and was forced to retire from dentistry. She had taken care of all of his computer data and IT needs for his business. In her extra time, she taught herself web design and administration skills, and DJ’ed to supplement income. This traumatic event made her buckle down and get serious, and she put 110% into creating her business.
The first website she created was for ringtone downloads, where she made all of the ringtones, and designed video ringtones for free. The site had good traffic, but she felt there were much greater things she could contribute to the world. Having battled obesity and an eating disorder, and overcoming it after years of biological and nutritional research, an idea hit. A website about holistic health, weight loss, and wellness secrets could truly benefit others. From there, “The Science of Eating.com” was born. Being prolific at Internet marketing and social media, Stephanie has promoted her website by herself and through online connections. Most websites pay to advertise on other blogs and Google, but Stephanie has been able to gain exposure through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest posts. Primary users are health-conscious women between the ages of 24-55 residing in the U.S.,

but she has been able to capture a diverse audience of loyal, active women and men followers of all ages worldwide. Giving Heart to Words on a Screen Former Teacher Turned Writing Whisperer Establishes Businesses as Experts in Their Field By Sherilyn Colleen
A
n 8th grade public school writing teacher woke up one morning to a devastating shock: houses washed away in her neighborhood, possessions scattered about, and a unified grief in New York and New Jersey. Communities were ripped to pieces when Sandy struck in October 2012, and M. Shannon Hernandez had an epiphany. “The collective energy of all of this affected me greatly — and I began thinking about what was of true importance to me,” she shares. “Was I spending every moment of every day exactly how I wanted to be?” Her answer was “no.” She felt extremely lucky her home wasn’t affected, and during a brief week-long respite, a “Hurricane Sandy Gift” granted by the public school system, M. Shannon reflected on her life choices up until the disaster. She loved teaching but wanted a change. Feeling unappreciated in a system that “devalued” their hard-working teachers, she created a business plan to change the course of her future, and the lives
of business owners and authors. The Writing Whisperer launched in February 2013, and her letter of resignation was received by school officials simultaneously. Her company gives heart-centered business owners and authors a way to gain exposure, share their narratives, create authentic marketing messages and become authorities on subjects through progressive content strategy and innovative copywriting. Immediately after removing her teaching hat, M. Shannon wrote a memoir entitled Breaking the Silence: My Final Forty Days as a Public School Teacher, to connect with her students, fellow educators, and inspire reformed public school systems. Richmond’s Favorite Biscuit Baker Home Cook Progresses to Owning Successful Baking Business By Stephanie Breijo

im Tim stands in a sunny bakery in Central Virginia. Surrounded by cheerful yellow walls, he rolls out another sheet of dough as old-time music meanders out of a vintage radio. Cut into large white squares, the dough resembles fluffy, homemade marshmallows. But the diehard fans of Early Bird Biscuit Co. know better — once these sizeable treats spend some time in the oven, they’ll become Tim’s trademark biscuits: the reason a line forms out the small bakery’s door nearly every day of the week.
Tim reached his small business by way of his own swimming pool company and a position in corporate sales, he says he’d always wanted to open a restaurant. When he saw the small space for rent, he knew, at 48 years old, it was finally time. Tim transformed the charming 725-square-foot spot into a sunny, bright bakery where he uses his great-grandfather’s own rolling pin, and staffs a small team of bakers to conceptualize and bake new biscuit flavors and pastries alongside him. Of course, he still works from home on occasion.
Early Bird sells more than just its array of biscuits — you can find biscuit sandwiches, pies, pastries and custom orders there—but when it came to building the business, Tim knew it was crucial to master just a handful of items and remain involved every step of the way.
“On a Sunday you’ll find me working from home in my den, on the floor because I’m not a desk kind of person, with my iPad and all of my bills,” he laughs. Part of being a small business owner is still in the details, no matter how successful your bakery is: menu planning, payroll, and taxes.
It’s diligence in preparation that led this home cook to owning one of the most successful bakeries in the area, and though
So when all is said and done, what’s the biggest benefit to owning your own bakery? According to Tim, it’s creativity and the

New Yelp Poll: MONEY CORNER
Small Businesses Bullish For 2016 Expect Digital Tools to Foster Strong Growth By Yelp Inc.
Y
elp Inc. (NYSE:YELP), the company that connects consumers with great local businesses, released its first annual Small Business Pulse Survey, finding that 85% of American small businesses active on Yelp expect their revenues to grow in 2016, estimating an increase of 26% growth in the year ahead. This optimism prevailed throughout the survey, with young companies leading the charge and predicting 48% growth over the next year. The “can-do” spirit of American businesses extended across a wide variety of industries, from food service, health and medicine to retail and home services. Small businesses in the restaurant industry that are active on Yelp were most upbeat about 2016, with 92% of respondents expecting an overall revenue increase. Small businesses are a growing demographic of overall business owners in the United States. Small businesses represent more than 99.7% (1) of all employers accounting for 55% of all jobs and 54% of sales (2) in the U.S.; and produce nearly half of non-farm private gross domestic product (GDP) (3).
“There’s a misconception that only big companies have the capacity and resources to use sophisticated, high-tech marketing tools. ”
“Small businesses are an important part of the economy. They provide roughly half of all private sector jobs, and also provide direct benefits to the communities that get to enjoy their goods and services,” said Harvard University Professor of Business Administration and Yelp’s Economist in Residence, Michael Luca, an expert on how businesses influence local economies. “It’s interesting to peek into the minds of small business owners, to see how they’re feeling and what they’re thinking about. This group of businesses is clearly optimistic, which is consistent with relatively strong consumer sentiment and a recent uptick in retail sales.” 48

The Machine: A Radical Approach to the Design of the Sales Function By Justin Roff-Marsh
HOME OFFICE
As field sales teams shrink, inside teams are growing. But not just growing. Exploding! Some are reporting a 300% year-on-year growth in U.S. inside-sales headcount. While this shift is exciting, inside sales teams have adopted a number of practices from the traditional sales model that would have been better off left in the field (or, better still, eliminated altogether). With such a significant shift taking place, what is required of these inside sales teams to truly take advantage of this new design of the sales function? “Where planning is concerned, what’s required is an inside-out approach,” says Justin Roff-Marsh, sales management radical and author of The Machine: A Radical Approach to the Design of the Sales Function. “Start with an inside sales function and then add field resources as they are
Unleash Your Inner Company: Use Passion and Perseverance to Build Your Ideal Business By John Chisholm John Chisholm, CEO of San Francisco-based John Chisholm Ventures, has been called the “Yoda of startups” by Rob Johnson, president of the Institute for New Economic Thinking. In his highly-praised new book, Unleash Your Inner Company: Use Passion and Perseverance to Build Your Ideal Business, Harvard MBA and MIT grad John Chisholm distills 30 years of uncommon wisdom and entrepreneurial experience, failure, and success. For example, he explains why business teams must understand that different is better than “better” when considering customers’ needs. “Different” means a qualitative advantage using a different approach, design, or technologies that make your product or service the best choice for some
One Million in the Bank By Michael Slavin Michael Slavin was bankrupt and down to only $20 in his pocket. Yet within a few years he had become a millionaire. He did it through business ownership and his story is proof that with hard work and a little knowledge anyone, over time, can put $1,000,000 in the bank regardless of their location, education, race, gender, or age. In his book, One Million in the Bank, Michael explains the lessons successful entrepreneurs have learned the hard way — not through get-rich-quick

required—and only to the extent that they are required.” Roff-Marsh is considered by many as the thought leader in Sales Process Engineering (SPE), a radical new approach to the management of the sales function. He is also the editor of the popular Sales Process Engineering blog, read by thousands of people around the world. Over the past decade, Roff-Marsh has presented Sales Process Engineering at events to tens of thousands of executives around the world. He has been guest speaker at scores of industry events, conferences and association meetings, and has facilitated Solution Design Workshops to hundreds of companies in a variety of industries throughout North America and Australia. important customer set. Being different places you on one or more different dimensions from your competitors, whether the dimensions are customer needs or product features. Your different product or service will not be for every customer, whether consumer or business. That’s okay. If you can earn the loyalty of a small but sufficiently strong set of customers, they will become repeat customers for your product or service; will buy more of your product or service over time; and recommend you to their friends or colleagues, so you will further benefit from word of mouth. John S. Reed, former chairman of Citigroup and New York Stock Exchange had this to say, “Experienced and first-time entrepreneurs alike will find Unleash Your Inner Company invaluable for turning their ideas into a successful business.” Unleash Your Inner Company is available for purchase in Barnes and Noble, on Amazon, and with other booksellers.
schemes or lucky breaks. As he attests, you don’t need a million-dollar idea to have a million-dollar business. Simple, proven businesses can be successful with the right approach. Packed with resources and helpful exercises, One Million in the Bank is an inspirational and informative guidebook to achieving financial security by building a business that will continue to provide income well into the future. It’s a practical look at how people with little experience and money changed their lives by starting their own everyday business. For more information, visit www.onemillioninthebank.com.

expectations are. They also need to have the latitude to create their own vision within your direct sales organization so that they can build something that they can eventually call their own. It’s a fine line in direct sales leadership that must be balanced: build your team, and help your team build their own teams. 2. Be selective. While it may seem great to add 50 new recruits to your team in a single month, you need to make sure you’re recruiting for the right reasons. People that are very good recruiters sometimes lack necessary follow-up skills, leaving a wake of consultants that have abandoned ship with a bad taste in their mouth for the entire direct sales industry. You’ve heard me say before how I would rather turn away a prospective recruit because they don’t fit the vision of my organization, than to sign up “anyone with a pulse” just to meet my incentive award quota. Success isn’t about quotas. Look instead for recruits that are a good fit for your organization, that grasp the vision you’re trying to create, and are willing to give you an up-front commitment of a minimum of

A six-month commitment gives new recruits a better look at the seasonal cycles of the industry, as well as a couple of product releases for most companies. They’ll have a better idea of how customer service really works, and what to expect at their team meetings. 4. Involve other leaders and strong consultants in your team meetings. You’re not looking for the best speakers— you’re looking for compassionate consultants that want to help others be successful. Ultimately, they will be your best leaders. Seek out even the quiet ones that have great potential and have them
share from their heart. There are lots of elements of the monthly meeting with which they could help. One of the best is simply a testimonial. Have your new consultants share why they joined the business, and seasoned consultants can also share why they stay in the business. It’s a great way to keep a meeting authentic, and focused directly on the consultant. 5. Recognize activities, not just results. This is probably the biggest secret to strong retention. Direct sales results can fluctuate from season to season. A consultant that joins in October may have an amazing winter, and wonder why February is rotten. They’re still making the calls, but not getting the results. Take time at each meeting to recognize the actions that beget success. Make mention in the team newsletter of the consultant who made the most booking calls, not just the consultant that held the most shows. Even a personal recognition to the individual can go a long way if you can’t recognize everyone at the meeting. Make a point to encourage the behavior you want to see more often in your consultants.

usiness coach Allison Taylor encourages budding entrepreneurs to keep their jobs until they have a solid plan for a home business. In 2001, she jumped into working from home as a consultant and trainer so she could pick up her two boys after school, attend school events and be more involved in their lives. Her prior leadership positions at marketing organizations that didn’t quite “get it” helped inspire the push into the home business arena. “There is a difference between bringing someone’s vision to life and just creating some slick marketing copy,” she says. Allison helps entrepreneurs create their own referral-based businesses. “Many workat-home professionals have limited marketing budgets and finding customers is what takes the most time,” she says. “It’s a lot easier, and cheaper, if they come to you.” Word-of-mouth is her own most effective, and cost-effective

marketing. “Creating referral activity requires a formula,” she shares. The first step is defining a simple, repeatable, and memorable elevator pitch. “It’s the core conversation for your business,” Allison says. “My clients use a process to find the words to share what they do in a simple yet authentic way that has others saying, ‘Wow, how do you do that?’” In 2014, Allison started working with Elify, a software company. When she first met with Elify’s founder, ER Wolf, she was inspired by the company’s mission: to increase the success rate for small businesses, 80 percent of which fail in the first year. Wolf created Elify as a mobile virtual assistant to help entrepreneurs organize and track their prospects, tasks and teams and ensure they are doing their most important tasks first. The company simplifies the process toward success for entrepreneurs by giving them all the tools they need to grow

their business, in the form of a mobile app. Allison works primarily with small and medium-sized businesses (including many Internet start-ups), network marketers, tech companies, realtors, and financial advisors. Now an empty-nester with more flexibility than ever, Allison is still hooked on the benefits of working virtually. “If I would have had something like this starting out, my journey to success would have taken months, not years,” she says. “But then again, I learned so much.” Visit http://www.Elify.com and http://www.VirtualBusinessCardGift.com.

Sales to Silk Pillows Serial Entrepreneur Leaves Corporate Job and Starts Australian Luxury Beauty Label By Sherilyn Colleen

n May 2015, one week before Olivia was due to embark on a five week family trip to the US, she made an impromptu decision to resign from her high paying fulltime role and start her own online business. Working long hours building new revenue streams for her employer and receiving little recognition for her efforts inspired her to leave the draining position.
monochromatic color palettes — synonymous with those famous Manhattan lofts. Sad to leave behind her favorite silk pillowcase on a pillow in her Manhattan hotel room, she had an idea.
Born with an entrepreneurial spirit, she started her first home-based business at age 5 (bottled water with fresh flowers, sold as perfume to local neighbours) and started another venture at age 25. Nine years later, she began again. With previous sales and corporate management roles for businesses under her belt, she integrated her vast experience into developing her new brand.
Olivia searched the globe for the finest, highest grade pure silk. The founder and creative director of Shhh Silk, an Australian beauty label that sells silk pillowcases and sleeping caps, Olivia designed the first collection with all of the additional features and benefits Olivia would want in a silk pillowcase. The ‘Classic Collection’ embodies a sophisticated elegance, with a sleek and modern appearance, inspired by the architecture of New York City. Shhh Silk’s second collection ‘New York Marble’ are the only silk marble pillowcases in the world.
Returning home from her trip to the US, Olivia reflected on the beautiful architecture of New York City, and the distinct
Olivia says the most labor-intensive and rewarding part of the start-up phase was building a following on her social channels

Q: Were you ever worried that audiences who go to see this movie will try to read into the story elements of your own marriage?
AJP: I was very nervous and anxious as we were about to being shooting. It was one thing to write it, but when you’re getting ready to do
AJP: It’s not autobiographical at all. We would never have been able to work together on something this demanding for week after week if we weren’t very secure in our marriage. We fight like any other couple but we also have great love and understanding for each other.

Q: What made you want to write this kind of a story?
the scenes and you know the emotional intensity that you’re going to have to bring with someone you love very much, you start thinking, “This is a really bad idea!” (Laughs) But we wound up learning so much more about each other and we had a sense that we were able to clear away a lot of tensions between us that can accumulate between couples. That was one of the great things about doing this.
AJP: I wanted to tell a story about grief and loss. I was still suffering a lot of grief from my mother’s (Marcheline Bertrand) death. While I was writing the script I was expressing a lot of the pain and so many other things that come with struggling to comprehend that kind of loss. It was important for me to write this kind of difficult story not just for myself, but also for my mother. Q: Did you ever have second thoughts about the film when you and Brad were on the set having to behave very badly towards each other? 56

your own issues. You have to be very present for your kids and kind of step back into that beautiful side of our lives. It was always comforting to be able to spend time with the kids and forget about the hell we would often be putting ourselves through at work. Our children will always be our greatest joy.
