Classic Chairs 1

Makers of some of the world’s finest furniture From the modest start in the antiques business in 1957, dealing exclusively in originals from the Golden Age of Cabinet making (1760-1835), The Classic Chair Company has grown to the international and well known producer of the impressive quality furniture illustrated in this catalogue. This development was a direct result of the need for replacements for the scarce and increasingly expensive original pieces, particularly long sets of chairs. All the furniture is historically accurate in style and construction, and beautifully finished with painstaking attention to detail: believable, honestly made furniture to the very best of standards, made to allow the luxury, style and elegance of a bygone era affordable to all today. The founder and chairman, Paul Kenny, has a very long experience and encyclopaedic knowledge of Fine Furniture and the periods to which the many examples he has bought, sold and restored belong. His involvement with the company today is very “hands-on” as he oversees every aspect of the production, from the initial selection of the pieces and the fine cabinet woods through to the careful final wax polishing. All the Classic Chairs furniture is made the old fashioned way, by skilled and expert craftsmen and women. The construction details are time-consuming but correct: for example, mortice and tenon jointing, drawers are dovetailed, brass pulls and handles are specially cast for each piece and so on, to ensure authenticity and commitment to making the very best furniture is never compromised. Whilst at first glance wooden furniture may not seem inherently environmentally friendly, Classic Chairs solid hardwood furniture is so durable that the reduction in the use of natural resources compared to furniture made from veneered or compressed chipped sheet board is vast. Where whole forests are used for cheap mass production of short life span domestic furniture, with associated global transport and energy disadvantages, The Classic Chair Company uses locally sourced timbers from Government managed and controlled sustainable and renewable forests. With no need for lengthy transport of raw production materials, combined with the largely hand worked processes, Classic Chairs has been able to cut the use of carbon-hungry energy very substantially. Classic Chairs furniture has been used in National Trust and Historic House Museums and Associations around the world, Grade I listed buildings and public monuments, significant historic interiors, palaces and Presidential offices, … anywhere and everywhere that exceptional quality and Classic style are desired, Clients include leading designers, many Royal families and even the Historic Drama film industry. Having completed much project work in many countries and diverse applications, The Classic Chair Company is always delighted to provide quotations for this work. www.classicchair.com

Master Style All Classic Chairs furniture has traditional construction methods, which have stood the test of time. Joints are all mortice and tenons, rather than the modern quickly drilled and easily damaged dowel prevalent elsewhere. Timbers are solid, with few exceptions where a ply is required, and even there we make our own with superior timbers and eco-friendly natural resin glues. Some modern methods such as kiln drying are used simply because they are better, but the best of traditional cabinet making methods have been retained.

Leathers

Classic Chairs can provide vegetable dyed leathers and hand coloured shading and nuances.

Leatherwork includes deep buttoning for upholstered items, and hand tooled and coloured tops for desks and tables.

Master Quality Classic Chairs furniture is made from solid slow maturation hardwoods carefully selected for density, grain pattern and durability. We believe them to be the best available anywhere in the world today. Our furniture will give generations of trouble-free use and certainly will be prized by collectors of fine furniture and bygone craftsmanship in the years ahead.

The timbers Classic Chairs furniture uses are very close in weight and density to the beautiful Cuban mahogany used in the 18th and 19th centuries, now no longer available. Pieces for the tops of tables are carefully chosen for the best grain pattern, and stacked and air dried for 5 years, turning monthly, then kiln dried before use. The true test of time. Where decorative cross banding is needed, we hand saw our own.

Most people don’t realize When they are looking at Avante Garde they are really looking at Devante Garde. In the same way in which there is no such thing as a “free lunch”, there is no such thing as a “new look”. All art and design is derivative, (yes, it’s all been done before, somewhere, sometime, by someone), and it takes a long, long study to spot it. Where your skill can still make a difference is applying this knowledge imaginatively.

On the following page are some unreconstructed, purely authentic 18th and 19th century designs so you can see how they still hold their own in today’s minimalist and simplified design clarity ethos….

All of the Classic Chairs range of furniture, wall sconces and mirrors are hand carved in wood – there are no plaster resin substitutes used. The traditional skills and artistry of master carvers are employed today in the same way as their counterparts of the 18th and 19th centuries, keeping a valuable art form alive for the future.
