Expert tips that will transform your closet from chaos to classy by Taylor Arnold

I

f your closet has become a dumping ground for piles of clothes, shoes and jewelry, it’s clearly time to get organized. All of the excess stuff only adds to your stress, causing you to spend countless hours looking for items you’ve lost, or waste money replacing the things you can’t find or forgot you had.

12P

The good news is, there is a way out—you just have to let go of some of your possessions and put a system in place for keeping the clutter under control. While saving time and money are fantastic, being organized also eliminates an enormous amount of anxiety. “Disorganization overloads

us with visual stimuli and sends a barrage of negative messages to our vulnerable psyches,” says Lori Fike, owner of Chaos to Calm. “You’re a slob. You’re too fat/thin. If you lost/ gained weight, those things would fit. You should have cleaned this up by now. You spend too much money on shoes/clothes/purses. That unneeded stimuli and onslaught of DebbieDowner messaging cause stress—it is literally bad for our health and happiness.” An overabundance of clothing can also make you feel like you have nothing to wear. “Too many items mean too many decisions, requiring too much time taken to get dressed,” says Lisa Greene Smith, owner of Simplify Studio. “Most people wear only 20 percent of their clothing 80 percent of the time. Editing and organizing your wardrobe allows for quick and easy access to the pieces you love and that make you feel amazing.” But when it comes to letting go of your possessions, it’s common to encounter some stumbling blocks. “It’s

fear that you may want or need it in the future, or guilt that you spent money on an item,” Fike explains. “But fear or guilt are never good reasons to keep something.” To overcome this, it helps to be realistic with yourself. “Have you worn it in the last two years? Unless it’s a special occasion outfit, you probably won’t wear it again,” says Julie Bertram, a certified professional organizer and owner of The Organizing Pro. “What’s the worst that would happen if you got rid of this item? I help people prioritize and point out the reality of their situation. If your closet only has 3 feet of hanging space, then that’s what you’ve got to work with.” Once you’ve edited your items to only those things you need and love, it can be tempting to have a shopping spree at the Container Store. But according to Fike, it’s important to “rightsize” your closet contents first and then buy supplies. “For example, if you have a lot of hanging jewelry, a pegboard is a worthwhile investment,” she says. “If you have limited hang-

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DOOR MAKES! Area Home Owners Maximize Remodeling Impact with Interior Door Replacement

Patented Technology

Smith offers a few other simple rules: • Utilize matching hangers for a consistent look. • File fold (vertical fold) items in drawers, like leggings, t-shirts, etc. • Use drawer dividers to keep lingerie and socks orderly. • Be ruthless with the one-item-in and one-out rule—keep a basket in the closet to collect items you no longer need or love. Decluttering is a continual process! • At least two times per year—ideally spring and fall—go through and reevaluate closet needs and reset your wardrobe. And while getting your closet organized is a major accomplishment, keeping it that way can be an entirely different challenge. “It’s almost like going on a diet,” Bertram says. “You have to make new choices. If you normally throw your clothes on the floor in a pile, you

have to start hanging them up or put them in a laundry basket. You have to commit to doing the maintenance part. If you don’t get rid of things, you’ll be back to square one. Spend five to 10 minutes a day putting things back where they go, and it will become second nature.”

Homeowners and designers have focused on interior and closet door replacement as an affordable, efficient, wholehome solution for revitalizing interior appearance. Experts agree it not only improves aesthetics, but can also increase overall home value. Homeowners have many options when updating or remodeling a home, but none have more potential impact than interior door replacement – the look and feel of every room is transformed. Over time, doors show wear and tear or become outdated. They’re slammed, kicked, or the finish is damaged by nicks, dents, or scuffs. Given the age oaf the home, foundation settling can cause doors to operate incorrectly – with opening or closing and latching – or can present gaps in the door’s frame. If floors have been changed from original, space may now appear beneath.

Charlotte Doors & Closets, an authorized dealer of One Day Exclusive Factory Doors & Closets, offers whole Painting home door and closet installation – Custom paint services at costs averaging finish applied and 30%-50% lower than home then oven cured improvement stores, contractors at the factory, and handymen.
