The relatively mild Carolina winters put outdoor living space high on the wish list of potential home buyers, says Stephanie Richart, a realtor in Allen Tate’s Lake Norman office. When she shows a home with such amenities as a fireplace or fire pit, an outdoor kitchen, pool, heaters or a pergola, the house stands out. “I call it the wow factor,” Richart says. “Those houses definitely sell quicker. It just extends the living area.” It can also decrease the amount of yard work. That’s just fine with many of her busy clients, Richart says. John Bell, owner of Southern Greenscapes, agrees. urge to do everything at once and settle for a look that doesn’t flow with the rest of the house, he adds. Important to remember when planning, Bell says: “Your space should flow with the seasons.” If your space is planned well, you can seamlessly shift from time around the pool to time around the fire pit, and you’ll be able to use your space almost every month of the year. Here are a few features that can help keep you outside this winter: FIREPLACES AND FIRE PITS “Fireplaces are great to look at and bring the indoors outside,” says

Tom Coogan of Coogan’s Landscape. “However, fire pits - either gas or wood burning - are easier to gather around and typically give off more heat.” For customers with limited outdoor space, a portable fire pit may make more sense; it can be packed away during warmer months. But if space is not a consideration, Bell suggests a gas fire pit. Homeowners typically find that the gas pit is easier to deal with – just flip a switch and you have heat. With a woodburning pit, there needs to be wood, which can attract bugs and snakes. Wood fires leave the folks around them with a smoky smell, Bell says.
Fire pits also provide a source of light. On a cool night, a gas fire pit is easy to light, giving friends an opportunity to linger outside just a little longer with minimal effort, he adds. HEAT LAMPS If you don’t want to gather around an open flame, heat lamps and heaters are a good option to provide light and warmth in fall and winter. “They add another dimension to the outdoor space,” Coogan says. OUTDOOR KITCHENS Grills are everywhere in the Charlotte area, and most homeowners use them

all year. Some want to kick it up a notch by adding a fully functioning kitchen to their outdoor space. Outdoor kitchens can be pricey but they don’t have to be, Bell says. He suggests, in addition to a grill, a granitecovered counter. It can be used as a bar, a place to set food and snacks, and there can be storage underneath. So, don’t hibernate until spring. Think of your outdoor space as more room to decorate, entertain and gather with family and friends, no matter what the season. That’s what the Ouimets are doing. This year, they’re putting a big Christmas tree out on the patio. H|D
