mmersed in a mystical sapphire haze in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains lies Asheville, aptly dubbed “Land of the Sky.” Soaring a stunning 2,500 feet above sea level and surrounded by hidden waterfalls, lush hardwood forests and scenic waterways, this western North Carolina escape offers the perfect mix of mountain serenity and vibrant city life. “In the city, we are a foodie’s paradise with a relaxed, cosmopolitan, artistic and intellectual vibe,” says Mike Davis with Ivester Jackson BlackStream, who’s called the area home for two decades. “In the surrounding areas, we are the outdoor cover life image with everything from hiking and cycling to whitewater rafting, zip-line rides and ice-cold plunges beneath any of the dozens of waterfalls on a hot summer day.” Whether it’s the cosmopolitan vibe of the city, the rustic outdoors or a combination of both, Asheville has a knack for appealing to the masses. “Homebuyers are drawn here for our four seasons, the natural beauty and our ‘live and let live’ attitude,” says LeNoir Medlock with Preferred
Properties. “With all the different neighborhoods here offering a different vibe, people are sure to find their tribe.” Much like the Queen City, Asheville’s inner-city neighborhoods shine with their own distinct personalities. For example, North Asheville is adored for its architectural character and history, South Asheville has Biltmore Park and a little bit of everything, West Asheville is considered a mecca of originality with its artsy vibe, and East Asheville is, perhaps, the city’s most exciting upand-coming area. “‘East is the West’ is the new buzz,” says Davis. “East Asheville is now starting to blossom thanks to eateries, boutiques, and an incredible new Whole Foods Market creating a brand new dynamic here.” While popular neighborhoods like Montford, Grove Park, Biltmore Forest, and Biltmore Lake continue to lure buyers, East Asheville has now found its way on the radar and is offering up some friendly competition. “Homebuyers are finding great value in East Asheville compared with other parts of the city,” says Davis. “Lot

sizes are larger giving homeowners more room to breathe, and some areas even offer great views where the topography rises 200-300 feet along the Swannanoa River.” Yet one thing remains, regardless where folks put down roots—they’re all invested in this quirky mountain escape they call home. “In general, the people of Asheville just like to get together and enjoy life,” says Medlock. “We like to hike, kayak, canoe, go to breweries, listen to music and learn about art. There’s a great mix of diversity, southern hospitality, and graciousness here that’s so unique.” It comes as no surprise, then, that the real estate market in this verdant paradise is thriving. According to Davis, it’s a sellers’ market where demand is high and inventory is low. “Compared to where many people are moving from, home prices are still a good value,” he says. “As a whole, Asheville is the perfect compendium for living a vibrant, connected and conscious life in the 21st century. It has a way of drawing you in, and you can’t help but fall in love with it.”

Designing The Ultimate
girl’s bedroom From bright turquoise to soft textures, this fun but cozy bedroom is every pre-teen girl’s dream space by Emily Gunn
C
lose your eyes, and imagine you’re a pre-teen girl. You’re not yet old enough to say goodbye to the whimsical style of youth, but you’re too young for a “boring” adult room. What would your ideal haven look like? You’d want it to be a little bit grown-up

but also a little bit magical. Jacy Kelly of Jacy Painter Kelly Interiors struck that balance when designing this masterfully decorated girl’s bedroom, complete with bright colors, bunk beds, fuzzy pillows and a literal “hangout” space.

CATE’S SPACE Like any designer worth her paint swatches, Jacy Kelly took her design cues from the person she was decorating for—in this case, a pre-teen girl named Cate. Kelly says Cate’s parents wanted her to be involved, so she was present for every choice, design meeting and draft board presentation throughout the process last summer. While the bed was already purchased for the room, everything else was a blank slate, giving Kelly the opportunity to hone in on what Cate wanted and create something incredible from scratch. Kelly says the summer redesign took about two months, from the initial consult to the final install (the giant turquoise rug was on backorder, Kelly says, but totally worth the wait). She took cues from Cate’s sweet and artistic personality. Cate knew she wanted turquoise (what preteen girl doesn’t?), but they worked through some complementary colors before settling on coral. When describing Cate’s tastes, Kelly says, “She’s girly but spunky too, and not your pink-is-everything kind of girl. She’s a really cool chick. I wanted something soaked in color, but also something she could grow into.” Cate’s
one request was a monogram on the wall, which provides a girly but elegant touch. When Kelly found hedgehog art, Cate’s mom kept saying, “This is so her!” The hedgehog art adds a touch of whimsical and coordinates with the room’s color scheme perfectly. PRE-TEEN CONSIDERATIONS Kelly was careful to keep Cate’s age in mind, not wanting to create something so “theme-y” that Cate would grow out of it in a year or two. Kelly selected bedding that wasn’t childish, but still bright and whimsical. The bottom bunk was a full-size mattress, so even when Cate grows out of the bunk bed phase, everything can transition into a bigger bed frame. Kelly says Cate’s room already doubles as a great hang-out space for older kids, especially with the built-in desk for homework. She added a giant furry pouf for extra seating. And speaking of “hanging out,” Kelly thought the hang-down reading seat would be the perfect way to add flair to the spacious bedroom. She wanted something to make friends and visitors look twice. The room also features a medley of cozy textures and beautiful, soft lighting. Cate’s mom

suggested wallpapering the ceiling as a feature “wall,” which adds some drama. With the tall bunk bed, Kelly didn’t want to use wall space, but the ceiling worked perfectly. Kelly painted the walls almost white to let everything else shine and included the chandelier to throw beautiful light around the room. From there, she carried the wallpaper and lighting into the spacious closet for continuity. The turquoise rug centers the entire space, and huge turquoise lamps flank the dresser, providing some balance with the tall bunk bed across the room. Kelly purposely went “overboard” on the soft goods like pillows and blankets in every kind of texture so there is a cozy spot wherever you look. ing for a pre-teen. She says it’s great to move beyond the children’s aisles, mixing in plenty of awesome pieces made for adults to make the room look more grown-up but still fun. Kelly says color is hip and being sold everywhere, and pieces in the adult aisles may last longer and transition better for an older teenager. She also emphasizes the importance of enjoying the process and having fun with the design. Of course, kids’ rooms should function for their needs, but Kelly says they should also be a place where they’re comfortable. Kelly is a big believer in fun design, and while you want to follow some kind of trend or pattern (color family, etc.), don’t worry about adhering to any specific design rules. Enjoy the process, involve the pre-teen and see what magic unfolds.

shutter epiphany Lessons from painting vinyl shutters and siding
by Allen Norwood
I
f you Google “paint vinyl shutters,” you’ll get some 16 million hits. I’m about to make it 16 million plus one. Also, I’ll share a sort of shutter epiphany. A reader asked about painting shutters, so this seems a good time to talk about the important lesson. Can you paint the vinyl shutters on your home’s exterior? Yes, as you’ll discover online, but with some caveats. The warning you’ll see most often is that you shouldn’t paint vinyl shutters a color that’s much darker than the original hue, because dark colors absorb heat. Vinyl expands and contracts pretty dramatically with changes in temperature, and too much heat can distort the shutters. Very good advice—but I painted ours black and seem to be getting away with it. Not all vinyl shutters are the same quality. Some are built to handle paint,
18P
some are heavier and more stable than others. I have no idea about ours, but I’d bet they weren’t expensive. The original vinyl color was deep maroon, not a light color. The original vinyl had faded so badly that someone had repainted the shutters a color close to the original. That paint had faded, too. They didn’t look very good when we bought the house. The choice boiled down either to paint or to replace them all. Pretty easy decision. If the black paint failed or damaged the shutters, then I could replace them. The black paint hasn’t harmed them, but, as expected, it does cause them to expand and contract quite a bit. Therein, the lesson. Vinyl siding moves, just like vinyl shutters. If you live in a house with vinyl siding you can see the stripes at the overlapped end joints, where sections of vinyl
are protected in hot weather when the material expands, then exposed during cooler weather. You can hear the siding moving, too—often with loud pops—on sunny mornings after cold nights. Anyway, because vinyl siding moves so much, you don’t nail it down tight. You leave space behind the nail head, maybe an eighth of an inch, so the vinyl will be free to move. You put the nail in the middle of the horizontal nailing slot so the vinyl strip can move in each direction. This is what you’d call an “aha” moment. After I painted the shutters black, their movement began to snap the plastic fasteners that attached the shutters to the brick. The fasteners began to break one by one. I replaced them with deck screws. And I realized that the small-diameter screw
in the larger hole in the shutter left more room for the shutter to move with the temperature. I didn’t snug the screws up all the way for the same reason, using lessons learned while installing vinyl siding. I found little plastic caps that fit perfectly over the heads of screws. I painted them black, too. If you’re considering whether to paint your shutters, weigh everything carefully, including that warning about darker colors. Don’t skip proper preparation. Choose a quality exterior acrylic paint. If you know who made your shutters, visit the manufacturer’s website for specific guidance about painting and warranties. Finally, if you Google “screw caps for shutters,” you’ll get 8 million hits.

House of Nomad by Bethany E. Starin
“
Q: How did you two meet? Lentini: “I was a designer at Restoration Hardware, and Berkeley and her husband Diek came in while they were working on a renovation of their Myers Park bungalow.” Minkhorst: “She talked us into a few pieces, and as we chatted we had an incredible connection. We realized we had studied abroad in Italy at the same time at the same school, even though we went to different colleges. Diek, Kelley and her husband Brad all lived in Shanghai—which is obscure. It was just all these things. All four of us went out to dinner, and Diek and Brad had to pull us out of the restaurant.” Q: How did your friendship turn into launching a successful design business? Minkhorst: “My Dad has always owned his own business, and my mom was so creative, always making pillows and designing—so I’ve always been entrepreneurial. I worked in creative marketing for Coca-Cola and then Mythic in Uptown, but I was feeling stuck and, like, what’s the next step? Each position was leading to this monumental moment. As Kelley and I talked, we

Kelley Lentini and Berkeley Minkhorst cofounded House of Nomad a few months ago after just a year of friendship. The dynamic team is working to bring fresh personality and design to Charlotte area homes. Minkhorst brings the creative marketing experience to the table and Lentini brings the design experience. Together, the duo is passionate about the brand they are forging through their like-minded love for both home and travel.
WHAT BOUND US TOGETHER WAS TRAVEL, AND WE WOULD LOVE NOTHING MORE THAN TO TRAVEL AND CURATE A COLLECTION OF FURNITURE AND ART.”

both wanted to do interior design. So we said, ‘Why not do this?’” Lentini: “In January 2017, we officially filed for our business license.” Q: What’s the story behind your branding—House of Nomad? Lentini: “Berkeley and I just love to travel. That’s what bound us together.” Minkhorst: “We talked about being a nomad. It’s an oxymoron—a nomadic designer. Someone who loves home and travel, who has a place that reflects their travels. We love the nomadic mindset and the goal of pulling out of people what’s important to them.” Q: Describe your design process. Minkhorst: “Our goal is to bring to life and pull as much of the client’s personality as we can into their home design. To do this, we have to get to know them. We love to dig deep and reflect on aspects of their home that’s really them. It’s us creating those spaces we know you will love, making it personal and your home—telling your story.”
Lentini: “We then always offer them options for their design—a design that is a little more risky and pushes their design style and then a safer look we know they’ll be drawn to as well. We are surprised by how many times they pick the risky option.” Q: How do you describe the House of Nomad style? Minkhorst: “We are not your mom’s designer. We are for those people looking for a fresh approach; we are not into frills. We love mixing the old with the new. Eclectic.” Lentini: “We love to mix materials—textiles and wood and metal and some marble to help balance it out.” Q: What are your business dreams? Lentini: “A fabric line and eventually a furniture line. My husband Brad is in the furniture manufacturing business, so we hope he could help us there.” Minkhorst: “What bound us together was travel, and we would love nothing more than to travel and curate a collection of furniture and art.”

Five of Minkhorst and Lentini’s must-haves for inspiration: 1. Queen of Spain by Schumacher Lentini: “Queen of Spain is a black and white textile with organic-looking dots— like someone dragged their finger through paint.” Minkhorst: “We love it on anything and everything.” 2. Passports Minkhorst: “I get weird if I don’t have my passport nearby.” Lentini: “That’s our happy place, when we have a trip planned.”
Light fixtures with attitude / arteriorshome.com
3. Design Assistants Lentini: “We love our assistants—our furry friends Shelby, a Springer Spaniel, and Oliver, a Doll-Face Persian.” 4. Modern Light Fixtures Lentini: “We love lighting that is a little unexpected and makes a statement—like the Sputnik in our office!” 5. Kelly Wearstler Lentini: “From her wallpaper to amazing lighting we adore anything by designer Kelly Wearstler. Her work is dreamy.” Minkhorst: “We are obsessed with her. To me, her work is unexpected.”

Golf Cart Cruisin’ On Public Roads 2017 Update This week’s column was written by my law partner, Bill Hamel
S
everal years ago I wrote an article titled “Is Golf Cart Cruisin’ Legal?” that addressed whether it was legal to operate a traditional golf cart on a public road in North Carolina. My answer then was “no,” and that answer remains the same today—unless you turn your golf cart into an electric car and register it with the DMV, or, more realistically, you are in a city or county that has adopted some form of the Model Golf Cart Ordinance. This ordinance allows the operation of golf carts on public roads where the speed limit is 35 miles per hour or less. The actual name of the model ordinance is the rather cumbersome “Model Ordinance of the County/ Town/City, North Carolina Establishing a Golf Cart Ordinance,” so we’ll just call it the “golf cart ordinance” for short.
We have had one notable golf-cart-on-apublic-road incident here in Charlotte: the now infamous golf cart journey from Quail Hollow Country Club to Selwyn Pub that came at the close of the 2015 Wells Fargo Championship. Although the details are sketchy, it appears a couple of guys (stone sober, no doubt) borrowed a golf cart from Quail Hollow Country Club and somehow maneuvered it all the way to Selwyn Pub—a distance of more than five miles—without being detected by law enforcement. This foolhardy expedition made the local news, the national news, and even earned a shout-out from Golf Digest. Neither the City of Charlotte nor Mecklenburg County have enacted a golf cart ordinance, so that little road trip was surely a violation of more than a few state laws. What has changed since my prior
article on this subject is that many of our surrounding cities have adopted some type of golf cart ordinance that allows golf carts to be operated on public roads under certain conditions. For example, Belmont, Pineville, Lincolnton, Indian Trail, China Grove, Granite Quarry, and Locust, just to name a few, have adopted a golf cart ordinance. While each version varies, the constant is that the ability to drive a golf cart on public roads in those
cities is limited to streets with speed limits of 35 miles per hour or less. If you live in a city that has adopted a golf cart ordinance and want to drive your golf cart on a public road, you should consult the ordinance first to make certain you understand its idiosyncrasies. If you live in Charlotte, it’s still not legal for you to drive your golf cart on a public road—so for now it’s probably best just to take an Uber to Selwyn Pub.

any of you are shopping for flower bulbs, so tempting are the lovely pictures of the tulips and daffodils on store shelves. That’s why it is so easy to go overboard and devote all your garden space to just one or two things—for example, the outstanding red Oxford tulips or yellow Carlton daffodils. You may not be able to leave those beauties behind, but it’s good to allow room for some other things—things you’ve never grown or that may bloom early or late in the season. This is how gardeners expand their palette of bloom and stretch the season at the same time. Stretching the season should be one of your goals. It is so fun to walk out of the house on a cold January day and

find snowdrops glistening just weeks before tulips and daffodils will be at their peak. And after the tulips and daffodils wind down their show, you can expect a lovely show of Dutch irises. These early and late bulbs tend to be smaller, take up less space and cost less. They are well-suited for flowerbeds, especially toward the front edge, and containers. Among the earliest, my favorites are snowdrops and both the winter crocuses and Dutch hybrid crocuses. The winter crocuses tend to produce flowers in bunches of two or three small blooms and lean toward softer colors of white, pink and lavender. They mostly bloom in February. The Dutch hybrid crocuses bloom a bit later, in late February or early March, with larger,

Charity Corner single blooms, often in glowing tones of bright yellow or rich purple. This sight will surely raise your spirits on a gloomy day in late winter. These are all well-suited for containers that sit outdoors on a patio, deck or steps through the winter. It is nice to have them visible as you come and go. I particularly like snowdrops planted under the canopy of a small tree. They don’t get very tall, just a few inches, so don’t drown them in bark or pine needle mulch. Crocuses are also short, but show up well under trees and along the edges of flowerbeds or shrub borders.
At the other end of the spring bulb season are marvelous Dutch irises. This iris grows from a small bulb and comes in many beautiful colors and blooms in late spring. Because these snowdrops, crocuses, and irises are small bulbs, they don’t require heavy digging and can be planted close together. The key is to plant them in large enough numbers to make a good splash and garner notice. Start with at least a dozen. The little tags will give good directions on depth of planting and spacing.
