harlotte is home to more than 800,000 residents and counting. With folks across the country looking to make this major U.S. financial hub a home, it comes as no surprise that many economists believe the population will shoot up to well over 2.8 million by 2025. What is surprising, however, is the number of mass-produced neighborhoods meant to house this population that’s anything but cookie cutter. That’s where custom builds step in and stand out as more than a house with four walls and a roof—instead, they’re masterpieces of quality construction and design as unique as the people who call them home. “A custom home is not just a home plopped on a lot like a production home,” says Anne Brade with Team Brade at RE/MAX Executive. “It’s a home in concert with the land where the land and home become very synergistic.” Building a home to marry the lot perfectly is a key attraction to those looking for custom homes. “Custom builds allow the owner to design a very relevant home related to views, topography and in honor with the land,” says Brade. “They can, within their budget, get exactly what they want.”

Which, of course, translates to inside the home as well. “A custom home allows the owner to specify where they want all their living functionality to be and to have only those functions they need,” she says. “Everyone strives to have that perfect property, and this type of construction gets you as close to that as possible.” Adam Nessen with Leeward Builders—a boutique builder of luxury homes—adds that beyond functionality, a custom-built home often becomes an extension of the people who will live in it. “By doing a custom build, homeowners can feel free to design around a piece of heirloom furniture or integrate building materials from an ancestral home,” he says. “What starts out as ideas, memories, and creative energy—with each step more invigorating than the last—results in a real-life dream home.” With different levels of custom design, building this dream home doesn’t have to be daunting. “There are some we call complete custom where everything is thought of and unique down to the doorknob,” says Brade. “And then you have entrylevel custom like I represent with Arthur Rutenberg Homes that has a complete design center and more than 100 floor plans that can be

customized to fit your lot.” So whether the homeowner fancies building a custom home on the lake, the golf course, a high acreage parcel, or a tiny infill lot, there’s a builder for that. “We highly recommend you interview at least two or three builders,” says Brade. “There are builders that specialize in certain geography, and it’s important to shop around to make sure you’re getting exactly what you want.” And with technological advances, a custom home can even end up saving some green in the long run. “Anything from energy efficient homes to green building can be explored,” says Nessen. “Smart homes can save you money, keep you safe, and save energy. There are more opportunities than ever thanks to the latest trends and technology.” According to Brade, the market is robust and it’s only getting stronger, making it a great time to choose custom. “Most of our customs here in the Charlotte area typically start in the low $200s per square foot,” she said. “You can have a $13,000 Electrolux appliance package or a $30,000-plus Thermador package. You can have multiple kitchens. You can literally have everything you want with a custom home.”

surprise guest A furry critter has taken up residence in an old bluebird box

by Allen Norwood

T

he bluebirds came and went. I cleaned the old nesting material from the bluebird box, then checked the box from time to time to see if a new family of birds had moved in. When I peeked in a while back, the box was full of fresh nesting material. I knew the guest wasn’t a bird, though, because I could see a pink nose and rodent incisors. I tugged gently at the nest—and something peeked back at me. The face seemed to be all eyes. They were big, round, wide open—plainly the eyes of a nocturnal animal wakened from its daytime nap. If you’ve ever encountered one, you’ll know our new guest is a flying squirrel. I’ve only seen a few in all my years roaming the Piedmont woods, but experts say there are plenty in the Charlotte area. The range of the southern flying squirrel extends from the Gulf

coast up into Canada. We don’t see more of them because, indeed, they’re exclusively nocturnal. They’re not as destructive as gray squirrels, says Allen Eckman of A-1 Wildlife Control, but they might try to sneak into your attic when the weather cools. They’re social animals and might nest in large groups, in hollow trees or in your attic. They occasionally chew on wires or water lines, Eckman says, but the biggest problem is they urinate and defecate in your attic. When John Fox was coach of the Carolina Panthers, Fox called Eckman to report flying squirrels in his attic in Piper Glen. “We watched a squirrel jump out of the louvers on Coach Fox’s house,” Eckman says, “and fly down to a bluebird house.” Which brings us to a couple of tidbits

about flying squirrels: – They don’t really fly. They glide, by stretching out the parachute-like skin between their front legs and back legs. That membrane is called the patagium. – They can make 180-degree turns while gliding. They can glide hundreds of feet, but usually travel 20 to 30 feet. – Unlike gray squirrels, which bring acorns and hickory nuts up to your deck and scatter bits and pieces all over, flying squirrels chew a single hole in the shell to reach the meat inside. They’re omnivores, and even eat slugs and snails. Flying squirrels adapt well to suburban areas, according to Lenny Lampel, natural resources coordinator for Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. (Coach Fox would probably agree.) They’re also found in such county parks as McDowell, Latta Plantation, and

Reedy Creek. You might be lucky enough to see one if you take part in nighttime nature excursions in one of the parks. The parks host what they call “moth nights,” Lampel says. Excursion leaders brush special bait onto trees to attract moths and other fun insects. The concoction can include brown sugar, molasses, and beer. “One night in July a flying squirrel showed up,” he says. You also might try this trick that Lampel has heard others swear by: “If you see a tree with a den cavity, knock on the tree. Flying squirrels are curious, and they’ll poke their heads out to see what’s going on.” I’m not going to knock on the bluebird house. I’ll let our little guest catch up on its sleep. H|D

Lake Oasis With a chic, kid-friendly design that leverages stunning views, Charlotte-area designer Lauren Clement turned one family’s dream of a lakefront escape into reality

lose your eyes for a moment and imagine a lake oasis: a modern-day lakefront escape complete with a yoga room, expansive porch, and beautiful rustic furniture made to withstand the messy whims of toddlers. Lauren Nicole Clement of Lauren Nicole Designs helped turn this tranquil vision into a reality, creating a living area that is as inviting as it is beautiful. Clement says her clients previously lived in Dilworth where the husband commuted an hour each day out to the Lake Norman area for work. When they decided to move, they wanted to create a space that could be an oasis for the entire family. With three kids under five years old and a large black lab, it needed to be a durable oasis—one that could withstand the wear and tear of their children and dog. They also wanted the furnishings to highlight the beautiful lake views, allowing them to enjoy the considerable natural beauty without distractions. With these parameters in mind, Clement stepped in to work her magic. ENHANCING THE VIEW One of Clement’s first ideas for the living

room was to purchase chairs that would swivel, so they could face both the living room hearth and then turn to take in the gorgeous lake view. She found two gray swivel chairs in ultra-velvet that were kid-friendly and stain-resistant. These velvet chairs have a light, chic look that is still inviting—a balance the family was trying to strike throughout the home. The client has told Clement they now sit in those chairs and face the back porch every single day, making them perfect anchor pieces for both beauty and practicality. In general, Clement wanted there to be plenty of seating facing the outdoor view. For the breakfast nook, she put as many seats as she could around a large, rustic table. Clement says her client wanted a beautiful, rustic table the kids could “beat up with forks” but still wouldn’t look abused and could withstand the test of time. She finished the room with an aged brass light fixture that offers enough substance to look good in the room, but not so much that it detracts from the focal point— the breathtaking view outside. Clement says if you stand on the porch and look inside into the

breakfast nook, you get a cool view directly through the center of the fixture. It looks good from every angle, she says. Unlike designing for homes in the city, where privacy from nearby neighbors is often a main concern, Clement wanted the home to open up as much as possible to the lake view. Still, the clients also needed window treatments to block out the considerable sunlight when they desired (what’s an oasis without the occasional afternoon nap?). Roman shades offered the ability to easily open up to the view, but also close out the direct sunlight. Functional window treatments provide the clients with the best of both worlds. COLOR CHOICES For the dining room, Clement says they chose a lighter gray wood for the table, contrasting nicely with the dark hardwood floors. The light color made the table feel slightly more casual and welcoming since the clients wanted a dining room they would actually use—one that would be dressy but not intimidating. Although a lot of the home’s colors

are calming and neutral, Clement included a few bright pops of color and carried navy throughout for a slightly nautical feel. She says the clients wanted the home to feel like a lake house—but without a blatant oar hanging on the wall. STUCK ON SHELVES Shelves can sometimes present the biggest design challenge, says Clement. She doesn’t want to simply stock them herself with decorative elements and then leave clients to feel like the shelves are impersonal. Shelves can also be difficult because they require so many considerations—number of elements, height of items, scale, proportion, etc. Decorating shelves can feel like solving a delicate and elusive equation. To solve this problem, Clement almost always allows herself a few rounds of decorating shelves, and a chance to step back and determine what is still needed. What she ended up with was a lovely dual focal point for the room, complete with personalized items that made the family feel at home. After all, it’s their oasis to enjoy from now until forever.

Myquillyn Smith“The Nester” by Bethany E. Starin

Best-selling design author and blogger Myquillyn Smith dubs herself “The Nester” for obvious reasons—for one, she jokes that her first name is unpronounceable. Smith coaches Charlottearea home lovers and beyond, through her Cozy Minimalist class, how to style their homes with this mantra: It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. This is also the theme of her blog and book, The Nesting Place. Smith welcomes everyone and anyone to her home Oct. 21 for Nest Fest, a daylong event featuring local designers, authors, food trucks, and more. Q: What first got you into design? A: “It all started with my Barbies. My sister was so mad— she was the storyteller and wanted to play Barbies, but all I wanted to do was to make Barbie rooms. Then, I really got into decorating my room—but not with money. I pressed flowers from our yard and used hairspray to adhere them to the doorway. I hung Banana Republic bags up on my wall. That creativity was where it started.” Q: How did your hobby turn into a passion and then a career? A:“I don’t even refer to myself as a designer. I studied elementary education, then got engaged, moved to Florida and started design school. I loved it—except for one thing. I am an introvert. I loved the work and felt like I had good advice but going into people’s homes and giving them feedback felt uncomfortable. I had a longing to be creative and the Internet helped me to do that. Ten years ago, I started my blog, on October 31,

24P

MY JOB IS BEING A COACH, AN ENCOURAGER. I LOVE WHEN WOMEN LOVE THEIR HOMES. I DON’T CARE IF IT BREAKS EVERY RULE OR HOW IT LOOKS. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PERFECT TO BE BEAUTIFUL.”

2007. The stars really aligned and I was in the right place at the right time—it took off really quickly.” Q: If you don’t call yourself a designer, what do you call yourself? A: “I call myself an imperfectionist. I call myself a cozy minimalist. My job is being a coach, an encourager. I love when women love their homes. I don’t care if it breaks every rule or how it looks. It does not have to be perfect to be beautiful. I love teaching this. The fact that I’m not a traditional designer with a design degree actually makes what I do feel more accessible. I hope in a tiny way, my ideas seem like one mom encouraging another that she can make her home pretty. No special skills required.” Q: How do you encourage those in your class to figure out what style they love? A: “The way to love your home doesn’t start in the furniture store. It starts in your head, in your heart.

Beauty is important. There are some universal rules that can apply to everyone, but I suggest creating a Pinterest board and pin with abandon—not thinking about your mother-in-law’s opinions or what your husband likes or what you can afford. Pin whatever you love. And then start making decisions.” Q: You are a best-selling author of The Nesting Place—what is your next book in the works? A: “My second book is The Cozy Minimalist, which is my take on minimalism—more style with less stuff. I used to have a really negative connotation with it, but it’s important to incorporate being a minimalist in some areas and to have abundance in others to keep that cozy feeling. If you love fluffy pillows, have them—but have a clean coffee table with one plant on it.”
