panning more than 60 sandy miles of uninterrupted beaches along northeastern South Carolina, the Grand Strand certainly lives up to its name. Less than a four-hour drive—or a 45-minute flight—from the Queen City, this salty stretch of ocean paradise offers a beach town for every personality, a home for every budget and low-country beauty that delights year round. “It’s amazing you can literally drive from Little River to Georgetown and stay along the coast the entire time,” says Nancy Siau with The Lachicotte Company—one of the area’s “true locals” and top real estate agents specializing in the Pawley’s Island and surrounding south end market. “Our beautiful natural landscape with the ocean, rivers and salt marshes speaks to people,” she says. “It’s definitely one of our biggest draws.” Having lived in the area for most of her life, Christi Wickliffe-Bessinger with Garden City Realty, Inc. is, like many others, drawn to the water. “When I’m not cheering on my kids at soccer games, I love boating in the inlet and on the Intracoastal Waterway with my family,” she says. “Many
don’t realize that while it’s a bustling tourist destination in the summer months, there’s also this small-town vibe in the off season.” The fall and winter months also offer a chance to see the strand decked out in a whole new light. “We have several holiday events coming up, like the Carolina Opry’s Christmas show and Brookgreen Garden’s Nights of a Thousand Candles,” says Siau. “The rates for oceanfront homes and condos are also discounted this time of year, and the beaches are generally less crowded.” From Murrells Inlet—“The Seafood Capital of South Carolina”—to bustling Myrtle Beach and historic Pawleys Island, there’s even a beach flavor to satisfy any craving. “They each have a different vibe,” says Siau. “For example, Georgetown, Pawleys Island and Murrells Inlet are more laidback and offer deep history and family ties. Myrtle Beach makes up the exciting hub, and then there’s the North End which also has more of a relaxing feel.” The housing market offers just as much variety. “We are fortunate to have something for everyone in every

price point, whether it’s a cottage or condo, primary residence in a golf or beach community or a multimilliondollar private estate,” says Siau. “And anything waterfront, or a short golf cart ride to the beach, is always appealing.” According to Wickliffe-Bessinger, new construction is also booming in the area. “We’re seeing a lot of new developments all along the strand,” she says. “Local news recently reported that 1 in every 4 homes sold in the Myrtle Beach area is a new home. Nationally, about 15 percent of the home market is new construction— however, the Myrtle Beach area has consistently exceeded that average.” Whether it’s the twinkling lights, the year round golf, shopping or leisurely beach strolls, there’s no better way to wrap up the year than with a trip—or something more permanent—to the Grand Strand. “The off season is one of the best times to buy real estate in our area,” says Siau. “Lodging prices are very affordable if you want to make a weekend of it while you look, the climate is mild and the sellers are motivated— especially if it’s a vacation property.”

The 2017 CotY Awards For the “Oscars of the Remodeling Industry,” local contractors gathered to recognize projects of distinction and celebrate their accomplishments by Emily Gunn | photography by Tom Schelin

n a warm Friday evening in early November, around 200 local members of NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) gathered at Electrolux, USA in Charlotte, dressed in semi-formal attire and ready to eat, drink and be merry (and, if they were lucky, to win awards) for the 19th annual CotY awards. The event was sponsored by title sponsors Electrolux and Ferguson, as well as other local participating sponsors.

The guest list included contractors, their team members and members of the press—all eager to see who would would win the awards in 45 different categories, each representing a type of contracting project done in the Charlotte area and judged based on before/after photography, product descriptions and technical considerations. The categories were expansive, ranging from the best Residential Bath Renovation Under $25,000

they enjoyed everything from dinner rolls to the salmon main course to the delicious dessert trays complete with mini apple pies and cheesecake bars. The first course was served as Mike Waite, director of the NARI Chapter in Charlotte, blessed the food, setting the tone for an evening of warmth and gratitude. He then turned the evening over to the event’s emcee, Tom Miller, the NARI National president. Miller spoke enthusiastically about Charlotte, citing his good impression of the city’s progress and calling it a “city on the move.” He described the guidelines for the CotY awards entries, explaining that each award would be granted to the team of a

contracted remodeling project—an improvement done to an existing structure. Recognizing these projects is about more than granting awards, Miller said. It’s recognizing that quality remodeling can change people’s lives for the better, a theme reflected throughout the evening. Changing the way people live on a daily basis through excellent remodeling, he said, “is no small thing.” NOTABLE AWARDS The projects highlighted throughout the event were also no small thing. Contractors accepting awards
talked about how clients’ lives have been changed by the projects, citing impressive, and sometimes even emotional, testimonials. Some of those clients were in attendance, enjoying the awards ceremony with the contractors who had become friends during extensive projects that often required many months to complete. One woman in particular exemplified the notion of how “remodeling changes lives” when she talked about her son’s bathroom. NARI’s charitable arm made it possible for her son with special needs to receive a bathroom specially tailored for him. It literally changed her family’s lives, she said,

making it easier for her son Ben to get in the tub and easing her mind in regards to unique safety concerns. For each of the categories, organizers showed “before and after” pictures of the projects before announcing the final winner. For kitchens, many of the “after” pictures boasted marble countertops, open concepts and white cabinets. For bathrooms, they commonly featured farmhouse sinks, gorgeous tiles and barrier-free showers. Winners took to the stage to say a few words, some getting emotional as they expressed gratitude for career progress and pride in the awards. The evening culminated in the “People’s Choice Award”—the only
award not selected by a panel of NARI judges, but rather by social media votes. By this point, several repeat winners had emerged, including Distinctive Design, Case Design and DPS Construction, among others. Several contractors racked up multiple awards, getting the opportunity to speak to more than one project throughout the evening. Both chapter President Mike Waite and National President Tom Miller spoke to NARI’s mission and the need to “get the word out” about the excellence of the organization. And if the projects featured at the CotY awards are any indication, NARI is in no short supply of excellence.H|D

Powder Room Basics Small investment, big impact by Vicki Payne
homes.charlo+e.com
I
nvesting in a powder room makeover is money well spent. It is one of the smallest spaces in your home, but dollar for dollar, it delivers a big return. Perhaps you haven’t even noticed how dated it has become. The powder room is the only room in your home where visitors spend time alone observing their surroundings. Dark, out-of-date wallpaper, dingy tile floors and vanities that look like they were built for elves register high on the “this house really needs updating” rector scale. Check it out for yourself. Walk in and look around. If your house is more than five years old your powder room probably looks dated. The good news is a guest bath is one of the most affordable rooms to update. The trick is to stay with the classics. Black-and-white bathrooms are timeless. Five to 15 years from now they will still be in style. The basics of a classic bathroom are white fixtures
accented with chrome and black, white or gray floor tile. This combination of materials is affordable and easy to locate. Horizontal wood paneling is one of my favorite looks in any small space. This classic wall treatment transforms plain boring walls and makes a space appear larger. Paint the walls and the trim with a semi-gloss white paint. Carrara marble is still the most enduring look for floors, countertops and tiles. If marble isn’t in your budget, subway tiles or 4-by-4 white ceramic tiles will work for the walls. Floor tiles can go large or stay small. Consider the pattern, a classic hexagon or octagon design in 1-by-1 tiles or larger sizes laid in a herringbone pattern. Lighting, faucets and hardware should always have a chrome finish. Golds, hand-rubbed bronze, brass and brushed nickel finishes go in and out of style. But chrome is ageless. Lighting fixtures can feature glass

vanity, make it 35- to 36-inch finished height and top it with a Carrara or solid surface countertop in white or black. Select chrome hardware in a simple traditional style. Time to show your personal style. You can keep the mirror simple by selecting an edgeless, beveled glass mirror or one in an unpretentious white or chrome frame. But for fun, you could always opt for a Venetian-style mirror or one with a great punch of color like sapphire or emerald green. Keep your linens white and don’t over accessorize the space. Less is certainly more when it comes to classic design.H|D

frosted globes or white fabric shades. Exposed light bulbs are very popular in today’s lighting but don’t always provide enough light. Consider the function. If it’s a bathroom where more natural lighting is required, stick with shades. Vanities have run their course in today’s upscale bathrooms, especially powder rooms. The classic look is a white sink mounted on chrome legs. Throughout design history, nothing is as abiding. If storage is needed, consider a stand with a lower shelf or identify a nearby closet. A sink suspended on an open stand or a counter mounted to the walls opens the floor space and make the room look larger and lighter. Palmer Industries’ console leg system and integrated sink tops by MTI make creating a vanity for your bathroom easy and affordable. Sink tops are available in a variety of sizes including a 68-inch double bowl with compatible console legs. If you do elect to use a wooden box

falling into winter Some friendly home-maintenance reminders for the cold weather months by Allen Norwood
O
ur gas fireplace logs balked when I tried to light them for the first time this fall. I had turned the gas off at the tank last spring, and the gas in the line had ebbed away over the summer. I opened the valve and tried to light the logs, but—nothing. Our logs are electronic with batteries in the fireplace and in a remote control. Basically, all I could do is point and click. Which I did—and did, and did. After I’d clicked, oh, two dozen times, I replaced all the batteries and tried a half dozen more times. No luck. I called Doug, one of The Fireplace Guys, and left a message explaining that I’d appreciate advice on how to bleed the gas line around that sophisticated ignition system. When I didn’t hear from him, I decided to call again. First, though, one more click. You guessed it: The logs came on with a pleasing “whoomp.”
20P
(I left Doug another message. I told him he was so good that all I had to do was dial his number to get the balky logs to cooperate.) Anyway, all that offers an opportunity to revisit cold weather reminders: Now is a good time to vacuum gas logs, and make sure they’re aligned properly. As Doug explained in a column a while back, the fireplace will create soot if the logs are too close to the flames. Preventing soot is especially important if you have unvented gas logs in an open fireplace. If you have remote-controlled logs, it might be a good idea to go ahead and replace the batteries before the fireplace season begins in earnest. I usually replace household batteries around Jan. 1, but it makes sense to replace fireplace batteries at the opening of the fireplace season. Carbon monoxide detector batteries, too.
Fall is the time to reverse ceiling fans, so they blow up. That pushes the hot air off the ceiling and down the walls of the room. Just be careful the fan doesn’t blow hard enough to push the gas flames up against those logs. Soot, remember? When we got our first unvented gas logs, experts advised not to burn them more than two hours at a time. These days, I limit each session to one hour. The flames from unvented logs generate lots of moisture. If you see condensation on the inside of window glass, turn the logs off and crack a window to ventilate. In fact, say experts at the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service, moisture can be a problem throughout the house during the winter when our homes are buttoned up tight. Lots of everyday activities in addition to gas logs—cooking, showering, even
breathing—add moisture. That’s why mildew can be a problem during the cold months. Moisture condenses on cool walls in spots where there’s little circulation, like the back corner of your closet or the spot behind the big sofa. To ensure healthy, comfortable circulation throughout the house, be sure heat vents are open, and that any vents in the floor aren’t covered by drapes or furniture. To keep moisture down, turn the bathroom fan on when showering and don’t forget the vent over the stove when simmering that big pot of cold-weather soup. Finally, if your gas logs are balky, too, be patient. You might get lucky on the 31st try. H|D
