T

ucked away in Western South Carolina in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordered by the charming small towns of Seneca, Pickens and Clemson, Lake Keowee offers the perfect getaway from the everyday. Known as “The Crown Jewel” of the Palmetto State and only a 2.5-hour drive from the Queen City, this remote yet convenient paradise has a lot to offer for a variety of homebuyers. “Lake Keowee is a huge inland lake with 300 miles of shoreline, crystal blue waters and gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountain views,” says “Super Real Estate Man” John “Clark” Kent with BlackStream International Real Estate. “The relaxation of being on ‘lake time’ creates a pleasant lifestyle for retired primary homeowners or an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life for second home owners who live in places like Charlotte or even Greenville.” While paddling along in kayaks, practicing yoga on paddleboards and jet skiing is all just part of the lifestyle here, many would argue the best part is less of an activity and more of a feeling. “There’s a different feel here than can be found on any other lake,” says Becky Weedman, director

of marketing for The Reserve at Lake Keowee. “Our lake is 26 miles long with a lot of little hidden waterways and coves, so when you’re out on the water, it doesn’t feel as crowded. It’s very serene.” “We are truly blessed to have beautiful mountain vistas and one of the cleanest water lakes in the country right here in our backyard,” adds David Hurst, director of sales for The Reserve at Lake Keowee. “And with our moderate climate, we can be out on the water from April to October and playing golf year round.” World-acclaimed golfer Jack Nicklaus designed two golf courses in the area’s most esteemed communities—The Reserve at Lake Keowee and The Cliffs at Keowee Falls. “Each year, these two golf courses partner with Clemson University to host The Clemson Invitational NCAA Golf Tournament,” says Kent. “Approximately 12 different colleges are invited, bringing spectators from far and wide.” Beyond the boating and tee time, Lake Keowee is highly sought after for its convenient location. “Cashiers and Highlands up in the mountains are a quick 45-minute drive, and it’s also only a 45-minute drive to downtown Greenville where there are

a ton of restaurants and the Peace Center for performing arts,” says Weedman. “A lot of our members like to make a day of it or hop in the car for a spontaneous weekend getaway. It’s so easy to do from here.” The hardest aspect of living here comes from deciding whether to buy on the northern or southern portion of the lake. “There are new developments on both sides of the lake,” says Kent. “The southern end is seeing approximately three new developments in the mid-range price points, and then the upscale developments on North Keowee such as The Cliffs Communities and The Reserve at Lake Keowee have opened up new areas of their existing developments for home building opportunities with price points in the $1-to-$4-million range.” As for the market, increasing construction costs have given way to a hot new trend, but according to Hurst, sales are up and it’s a great time to buy. “This year, we’re seeing a lot of folks gravitating toward completed homes with construction costs on the rise,” he says. “In The Reserve alone, we’ve seen a 200 percent increase in home sales over 2016.”

he trick to preparing your home for the holidays is knowing your strengths and weaknesses, says Katrina Hutchins of Katrina Hutchins Events. It’s knowing what to add to your list, what to delegate—and what to take off altogether, she says. “Most of us are not Martha Stewart, so unless you are that way in your day-today life, don’t try to be her on Christmas or Thanksgiving—which is a big production anyways,” Hutchins says. She laughs, saying not everyone is a pastry chef, not everyone is a designer—so do what you love, don’t try to do it all. While she runs a boutique event planning company, Hutchins says she takes her own advice.

homes.charlo+e.com

“My husband is Italian, and for Christmas Eve, I go to Pasta & Provisions and get pre-made raviolis and homemade sauces. It’s become a tradition, and it’s delicious and easy and local and there are no complaints.” Hutchins continues. “Try to find things like that. Not everything has to be DIY and homemade,” she says. “People bite off more than they can chew and the holidays become 100 percent work and no fun.” DECK THE HALLS If making your home festive is part of what you love most about the holidays, start by winterizing your space, says design guru Myquillyn Smith, best-selling

aybe it’s not your home you’re prepping this season, but your luggage—and a festive gift to warmly thank your holiday host. Consider going local with your present, says Katrina Hutchins of Katrina Hutchins Events. “I love to support local businesses,” she says, adding that one of her go-to presents this season includes an Uashmama reusable paper wine bag from Elisabeth Rose, a social stationery shop in downtown Davidson. “The beautiful wine bags are from Italy. Grab a bag, a bottle and voila, it’s the perfect hostess gift!” Elisabeth Rose also offers a combo wine and bottle opener by W&P Design, as well as cookbooks and whiskey ice cube trays, and beauty products (including a men’s line) by Formulary 55. A variety of succulents are available potted by Blake Pope, the general manager at Davidson’s Kindred restaurant who’s most often seen mixing up a barkeep’s choice but has kept the hidden talent of plant master in his back pocket. Charlotte area design blogger and author Myquillyn Smith says she loves gifting something living or something edible. “I love to give a tiny leyland cypress or rosemary plant wrapped in a dropcloth. It’s so easy,” Smith says. She grabs a small drop cloth, which is less than $10, then cuts a piece and uses whatever she has laying around—twine, ribbon or rope—to tie it up. “Or if I think ahead, I’ll grab some homemade fudge from my favorite local fudge makers.” She suggests Iva Jean’s Fudge, available at local shops across Charlotte including the Waxhaw Provisions, Paper Skyscraper, The Common Market and The Mint Museum. The barrels at Whole Foods Market is where Kelley Lentini, co-owner of boutique interior design firm House of Nomad, finds a fresh gift for her hosts. “In the bath and body section, they sell lavender-infused bath salts you can purchase by the pound. Fill up an air-tight, glass container with the salts and tie a little sprig of it around the jar with some ribbon. Everyone will appreciate this gift— especially during the busy holiday season!” For more information on Elisabeth Rose, go to elisabeth-rose.com.

author of “The Nesting Place.” “I challenge myself to winterize my home before I ever crack open one Christmas storage bin,” she says. “Winterizing means layering on throws and textured pillows, putting flannel sheets on the beds, maybe setting up a hot cocoa or coffee station and grouping together some candle holders.” After that, shop your yard. “I’ll go outside and break off a few evergreen branches and text my neighbor to see if I can have a few magnolia leaves,” Smith says. “Before you know it, your home feels festive naturally, full of useful items that make sense during the winter months. Once you do this, you might find that you need a lot less holiday decor than you thought.” Designers Kelley Lentini and Berkeley Minkhorst, co-founders of Charlotte’s House of Nomad design firm, suggest snagging fresh greenery while you tree shop. “When we go get our tree and they trim the branches, I ask to take the

greenery,” Minkhorst says, adding that she picks up a couple fresh wreaths, as well. “What’s so nice about the holidays is you can bring in the real elements. My biggest thing with holidays is that everyone gets so carried away—keep it simple and fresh.” The duo suggests picking focal points for decorations. “Make a beautiful entryway for your home and focus on the front door, wrapping a beautiful garland around it,” Lentini says. Smith says once the entryway is set, pick two more places to focus your decorating energies. “Maybe that’s the Christmas tree and the mantel,” she says. “If your home is winterized, it will feel festive with just a few added touches.” ROCKIN’ AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE If your holiday agenda includes a party and your budget allows for it, consider hiring an event planner who

will assist in pulling off your vision and managing all the details, Hutchins says. Katrina Hutchins Events tackles a design plan, covering everything from vendor selections and florists, to linens, china, chargers and silverware for creating a gorgeous tablescape. But if you want to tackle details for your event, go simple on the tablescape, Hutchins says. “Don’t be afraid to use things you already own, like ornaments, for a centerpiece,” she says. A table instantly looks beautiful if a textured linen is selected. She suggests renting items from Party Reflections or hitting up Restoration Hardware or West Elm. For a well-dressed table, Lentini and Minkhorst suggest organically layering fresh greenery with a strand of copper-wire macro lights and some berries. Then, add in a bouquet from their favorite floral studio in NoDa, Nectar. “Tell them your budget, and they pull together this bouquet by color and season,” Minkhorst says.

CHESTNUTS ROASTING ON AN OPEN FIRE If you are throwing a dinner party on a budget, Hutchins suggests prioritizing hiring out the catering, which is the most time consuming element. “It doesn’t matter how pretty a place setting is if the food isn’t good— that’s what people will remember,” Hutchins says. Or, consider hiring a food truck. “It’s a conversation starter, it’s fun,” Hutchins says, adding that three of her favorites are Tin Kitchen, Papi Queso and Hiya Food Truck. If food prep is your thing, Smith suggests a rule of two. “When it comes to hosting a meal, as much as I enjoy cooking, I usually only allow myself to prepare two things from scratch. The rest is semi-homemade, or I’ll take people up on their offer to bring something,” she says. Most of all, Hutchins suggests considering this for your event: Don’t assume it has to be super formal. “Tradition is lovely, but if that’s not who you are, do something different.” Departures from the norm could

Or, you could hit up Good Bottle Company and have them keg a local brew, such as NoDa Brewing Company’s pumpkin gourd beer, Gordgeous. Smith suggests emphasizing one food memory. “I try to create one special moment where I’ll go slightly overboard and get to be creative. At Christmas, that’s usually a special drink like a cocktail or a cider bar. Every aspect doesn’t have to be creative—just one.” Whatever touch you decide to add, “People really appreciate it,” Hutchins says. “The departure from normal

Most people forget to turn down the lights as well as the music on,” she says. Most of all, plan so the holidays can be festive for everyone—including you, Hutchins says. “The holidays always come a lot sooner than they think. Table Decisions Holidays are the perfect time to give your dining room seating a refresh by Vicki Payne

I

t’s the time of the year when we all gather around the table to share our lives with friends and family. It’s also the time we notice how badly we need a new dining room table and chairs whether it’s in the formal dining room or the kitchen. Hard to say which shows the most wear and tear, the table or the chairs. It always seems to me they both become unacceptable at the same time. Perhaps we’re tired of the look, the style or the color. Whatever the reason, they won’t cut it for another holiday season.

22P

This time, before you plunk down thousands of dollars for a new table and chairs, think about all the issues you had with the old set. Is it too small for your family gatherings? Were you always setting up a card table in the living room and hoping there would be enough kids in attendance that you wouldn’t have to stick one or two adults at the kids’ table? Or is your current table so large the room feels crowded? Do the chairs fit easily around your table? Do they slide in and out without making people move so someone can go for

seconds are turn off the stove? It’s a numbers game when it comes to dining room furnishings. Table size and shape need to be your first consideration. If you have a small, square dining room, don’t fall in love with a rectangle harvest table when a round one will fit beautifully. A minimum of 36 inches from the table edge to the wall is necessary for a chair to be pulled out and a guest to be seated. The beauty of a round table is your ability to host odd numbers of guests. Depending on the size, three to nine people fit just as nicely as four to 10. The negative, though, is most round tables do not expand. If they do, they become an oval. A 54-inch round table seats six people, a 60-inch can accommodate eight and a 72-inch has room for 10 guests. A rectangular table with an expansion leaf offers the most versatility but still requires the same amount of seating space on each side. A 30x72-inch table seats six guests. A 24-inch expansion leaf allows for two additional guests. Your dining room needs to be a minimum of 8.6x14 feet to be large enough for a table of this size. There’s a wide-range of seating options. The last thing you want is to buy a set of six or eight matching dining room chairs.

homes.charlo+e.com

Diversify. Consider purchasing three or four matching chairs for one side of your table and a long bench or settee for the other. Borrow from other rooms. If you have two matching upholstered chairs in your living room, they might work great as his-and-her captain chairs in the dining room. The most appealing seating arrangements are those that employ a nice variety of options—exposed wood mixed with upholstered chairs or acrylics with metal. To make it work, fabrics need to coordinate, the scale of the chairs should be analogous and the seat heights consistent. The normal height of a dining chair seat is 16-17 inches for a table that is 28-30 feet tall. Size and style are important, but don’t overlook the comfort factor. No one wants to sit in a wobbly straight back chair with their chin at table level. Never forget the true magic of any get together is the boundless conversations around the table. H|D

colors; others have margins or centers of a different color, such as white or cream. While some people may think such a beautiful plant is risky business, camellias are among the easiest and most carefree of landscape plants. Planted correctly, they should grow well, if a bit slowly at first while they get adjusted. It is not difficult to make the most of their beauty. Think first of how you wish to use the plant. Some varieties, such as Yuletide, make excellent screens because of their upright nature and rather dense foliage. Others, such as Lady Clare, make ideal specimen plants, producing small trees with loose, horizontal branching, especially when the lower trunk is cleared of branches. Most camellias prosper in filtered sunlight, the kind of light that breaks through light tree canopies. The Camellia sasanquas will take stronger sunlight, which increases their usefulness, particularly when you need a set

of plants for a hedge in a sunny spot. Their soil requirements are a bit particular but not difficult to achieve. Camellias arose in the acidic soil of Eastern Asia, particularly China and Japan. They require similar soil here, which means the addition of compost to the native clay soil. For fertilizer, choose a product formulated for acid-loving plants such as HollyTone. Because many of the camellias bloom in mid-winter, open blooms may be subject to browning on very cold nights. Anticipating this drop in temperature, you can cut open blooms and bring them indoors to enjoy. Buds tend to survive deep freezes without harm to the eventual bloom. You can plant camellias now through winter. An advantage is you can see the blooms and pick just the style and color you like. Don’t forget to consider the mature size stated on the label, and pick the right one for the space you’ve got. H|D

Savings Update

My bank says I can only make six withdrawals from my savings account each month. Why? By Sabrina Karl If you frequently transfer money out of savings, or cover checking overdrafts with a linked savings account, you’ve likely discovered there’s a limit to how often you can do this in a month. Exceed six withdrawals per statement cycle and your bank will warn you at best, or close your account at worst.

If you’re a first-time offender, you may escape with a warning, or may be able to score a one-time courtesy waiver. But even if you pay the fee, repeatedly exceeding the limit will eventually lead the bank to close your account, as they simply can’t abide by their own Fed requirements if you keep breaking the rules.

But before unloading your anger at your bank, or moving your savings to a seemingly friendlier institution, know that banks have no say in this. The mandate comes down from the Federal Reserve in a rule called Regulation D.

Fortunately, only withdrawals authorized online, by phone, via bill payment or as auto-transfers count toward the six. So if you’ve hit your monthly limit but still need to take out funds, you can avoid the penalty by withdrawing at a branch or ATM, or by requesting a mailed check.

The six-withdrawal limit applies to all liquid savings instruments, so that includes savings and money market accounts. It also applies equally to banks and credit unions. And while the Fed doesn’t dictate fees, most institutions will ding you with a charge – often $10 – to teach you that your savings account can’t be used like a checking account.

With an understanding of the rule, and the ability at many institutions to see how many withdrawals remain for the month, most consumers can plan accordingly to use their account as the Fed requires, and avoid their savings being diminished by fees.

Rate Criteria: The rates and annual percentage rate (APR) are effective as of 11/14/17. All rates, fees and other information are subject to change without notice. RateSeeker, LLC. does not guarantee the accuracy of the information appearing above or the availability of rates and fees in this table. The institutions appearing in this table pay a fee to appear in this table. Annual percentage rates (APRs) are based on fully indexed rates for adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs). The APR on your specific loan may differ from the sample used. All rates are quoted on a minimum FICO score of 740. Conventional loans are based on loan amounts of $165,000.
