If the treads have to be replaced, it can be a costly upgrade. Dan Minton, President of Accent Wood Floors, has years of experience helping people update their hardwood floors and stairways. “There are basically two types of staircases: prefabricated and site built. Prefabricated staircases don’t have a framing structure for support. The risers, skirt boards and steps are integrated into one unit. Therefore, you can’t remove the step without the system failing. The solution is to overlay the tread with a new oak tread.” Site-built staircases, on the other hand, have a framework called stringers, says Minton. “The pine treads can be replaced with a hardwood tread. Both these types can be installed and finished for about $150 per tread.”

You can keep the wooden handrail and just replace the spindles. For a more simplistic style, consider having an all-metal railing system created. Charlotte has lots of custom iron shops that can design and create custom railings to fit your budget. Fully carpeted stairs can look really out-of-date depending on its pattern, color and loft. Just getting rid of or replacing the wall-to-wall carpet can make the biggest change in your stair’s appearance regardless of your home’s style. If you’re replacing the existing carpet select a flat weave or sisal carpet. Animal prints, textures, stripes or small geometrics are all good choices.
