here’s something special about Lake Norman. From the charming towns that caress its beautiful shoreline to the breadth and depth of its waters, this manmade lake in North Carolina has an unexplainable allure, drawing folks from far and wide. “The Lake Norman area just feels like home,” says Amy Petrenko of Sotheby’s International Realty. “It entices buyers from all over the U.S. and even the world with its inspirational sunrises and sunsets and the friendliness of the communities. Not to mention, it’s also close to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport and several other small airports, allowing people to make it a primary or secondary home location.” It’s a location that works for all ages, backgrounds and interests. From Denver to Huntersville, Cornelius to Davidson and up to Mooresville, too, Lake Norman covers a lot of ground. “It truly is a destination location thanks to the indoor and outdoor activities that cater to all ages and lifestyles,” says Petrenko. “And the greatest thing about living here is the abundance of neighborhoods and communities. You can choose a waterfront and/ or golf community or pick a community where you can fly your plane
onto the community’s landing strip. You can even have a home with a private lakefront deck that accommodates your helicopter.” The area is also an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. “Lake Norman is definitely a great place to live if you like an active lifestyle,” Petrenko shares. “There are a number of parks, sidewalks and bike paths that run through many of the communities. Our area is also home to a variety of golf communities and yacht clubs, and people love all the boating, paddling and kayaking out on the lake. With our temperate climate, you can enjoy many of these things year round.” For those who consider eating a favorite pastime, the Lake Norman area has become a gastronomical delight in recent years. “We have so many restaurants with great chefs who have also relocated to this area, making it an even more amazing place to live,” says Petrenko. “Birkdale Village in Huntersville is an incredible mixed-use area with shopping, restaurants and apartments. And word has it that other mixed-use developments will be popping up around the lake.” Retirees from across the country are also drawn to the serenity of this Charlotte-area lake. It’s something

Debi Gallo with Southern Homes of the Carolinas is all too familiar with. “My husband and I have searched all over for a place to retire,” she says. “We often visit the ocean and interview locations there, but somehow we’re always drawn back to Lake Norman. It’s just the perfect place to retire.” Retiree or not, the lake is seeing a lot of new development to entice every buyer. “New developments are going in all around the perimeter of Lake Norman,” says Petrenko. “From luxury condominiums to quaint English villages or townhomes near shopping around the interstate, Lake Norman is growing. Our developers have imagination and vision, allowing clients to live inspired, as witnessed by the new Watermark Lake Norman development. It’s establishing a new standard in luxury living.” As for the real estate market, Gallo says it’s strong all year. “Lake Norman’s future is awesome,” she beams. “My clients are typically empty nesters, so they’re not driven by the school year or employment. They come here for the enjoyment, affordability and casual-chic atmosphere. No matter the case, folks buying recognize our area is growing and appreciating, and they want to be here.”

We all know that creativity is sparked by compelling surroundings. Something as simple as turning your desk around so you can look out a window can elevate your inventiveness. A new desk can take your work day to a new level. Today’s desk trends offer up-to-the-minute styling with ample workspace. Clean lines, an innovative use of materials and a variety of shapes and sizes are yours for the choosing. The Ferris workstation table offers more than your average desk. Thick peroba wood cleverly arranged into a stacked pyramid of work and display surfaces becomes the centerpiece of your office. On a smaller scale, the Tucker desk mixes oil-rubbed bronze hardware and a white lacquer work surface with walnut drawer fronts. The white lacquer keeps the desk from being too dark and works nicely with white framed artwork creatively displayed. creative think tank with the Rupert work table. Inspired by the “partner” desk, four swivel seats upholstered in leather swing out for meetings and tuck neatly away. The reclaimed pine work surface and iron base are the essence of inventiveness. On a much lighter scale is a new twist on the architect’s desk. The traditional wooden sawhorse base has been replaced with a slender, matte brass-finished iron. The Eden desk is topped with banswara white marble. It’s a perfect writer’s desk. Update your desk chair by combining style, comfort and accessibility. The classic Malibu desk chair combines all three of these important features. Its minimalist style, leather upholstery and casters allow you to move freely around your work area.

Think outside of the box by using one of your dining chairs or a side chair. If you’re a pop-up-and-down worker you’ll find a chair without arms is easier to access. A decorative rug under your desk allows any chair to move with ease and protects your floors. Lucky you if your desk is illuminated by natural daylight—but you still need backup lighting for burning the midnight oil. Adjustable arm lamps are the most versatile. You can direct light where you need it and fold it away when the job is done. Thoughtful design and functionality describe today’s desk trends. Don’t settle for ordinary when you can have a creative space worthy of your innovative hypotheses.

Peering into window trends How do you choose between blinds, curtains, shades and more? Here are some tips for treating yourself to the right window treatments, from local home designer Angie Persson. by Emily Gunn

hoosing a window treatment is about more than picking something that looks good in your home—you have to consider light control, privacy and functionality. After all, the most fashionable window treatment isn’t doing its job if your neighbors can watch you enjoying movie night on the couch. Here are a few tips for choosing the best window treatments in on-trend styles you’ll love for years. CHOOSING THE RIGHT TREATMENT How do you choose between blinds, shades or curtains? While blinds often offer the most privacy, shades can offer more nuanced light control—particularly roller or Roman shades that open from the top or bottom or can be positioned to provide a

specific degree of lighting. While privacy is important, you also want to be able to capitalize on all the light you have in your home. Angie Persson, co-owner of Swell Décor in Cotswold, says this is why homeowners are starting to trend away from plantation shutters—and sometimes blinds in general—because they can block the light even when you want it. Instead, more homeowners are moving toward shades, which you can raise completely for more light. If you’re not overly worried about privacy, Persson says linen sheers are an increasingly popular option. “Linen shades have come a long way,” she says, adding that they are “not your grandma’s linen shades anymore.”
She sees them in a lot of gray, cream and natural colors, adding a simple finishing touch and a bit of privacy, without a high price tag. WEAVING THE LOOK TOGETHER One of the biggest trends Persson sees in window treatments is the use of woven shades. With woven shades, she says you tend to get a little more for your money—they offer full covering and privacy so you won’t have to use two treatments. Drapes or curtains can get pricey, since you have to consider the cost of the fabric and a liner in order to create the privacy you’re looking for. Curtains are also expensive because of the costs you may not think about

right away, including hardware and curtain rods. With a woven shade, you don’t have to purchase this pricey hardware, which means it might be a more budget-conscious choice. When choosing a woven shade, consider the tones you already have in the room, Persson says. For instance, in a living room that might have more wood-tones, it makes sense to go with a wood-toned or warm-colored option. Whereas in a bedroom where you would see more whites and grays, you should go for a cooler-toned shade in a complementary color. EMBRACING COLOR While everyone wanted the serene white and gray look a few years ago, Persson says people are starting to crave a little more color in their home design. In order to pick a good curtain pattern, she recommends deciding what your room’s “starting point” is. If you already have a patterned rug or piece of furniture, you can choose to play off that and pick a curtain fabric that complements it appropriately. If you’re starting

from scratch, though, you have the opportunity to make your window treatments the starting point, which means you can define the room through the fabric you choose. If you want to add some color to your space but are afraid to commit to a bold pattern or color, Persson recommends trying a colored tape trim on your shades. A tape trim is something you can easily switch out if you decide you’re tired of it, but it will give your window treatments a bit more personality while you’re looking for it. If you’re layering window treatments, try a shade with a fun tape trim, with solid curtains over top of it. Whatever window treatment you decide to go with, it doesn’t hurt to look for design inspiration from the experts. Designers like Persson and her business partner Merrin Lowe post inspiration photos on their Instagram, SwellDecor. Design accounts are a great place to find initial ideas—then create your own unique design that you’ll continue to love for years.

Standard Phillips head
The Torx screw and bit
A bit of advice
The Phillips head and its modern, updated counterpart by Allen Norwood
M
r. Phillips probably would be saddened, and he’d certainly be astounded. The late Henry F. Phillips, I mean. He’s the businessman who introduced the Phillips screw head to the world. He didn’t invent the head style, with its signature “X” slots. The design was created by John P. Thompson. But, early in the last century, Mr. Phillips formed a company to manufacture the newfangled screws. Now, the Phillips head is being replaced. The Phillips head was invented for the same reason that you find it easier to drive a Phillips head than a standard slot head with your variable speed drill when working on your deck. Your Phillips bit centers easily and doesn’t slip as much. You don’t ding the board around the head of the screw. Imagine trying to build a deck with slot-head screws. It would be a night-
30P
mare. Now, imagine trying to build, say, an airplane using only slot-head screws. The combination of the Phillips head and affordable variable speed electric drill truly revolutionized do-it-yourself home projects, from hanging pictures to building decks, just as the Phillips head revolutionized manufacturing. Alas, certain types of Phillips head screws are disappearing from store shelves. When I went to my neighborhood home center the other day, I found no Phillips head deck screws. Not surprising, according to James Young of Fastenal on Pressley Road in Charlotte. Just as the Phillips was a giant leap forward from the traditional slot, the new head designs are improvements over Phillips. “Phillips is a really, really old design,” he says. It’s being replaced by other designs, including the square, or Robertson drive, and the star-shaped, six-lobed Torx drive.
Both center easily, like the Phillips, but don’t slip as easily. “They do not, just based on the geometry,” Young says. Slipping, of course, can damage both the screw and the bit. I bought deck screws with Torx drive. The box of screws came with a Torx bit—because most DIYers have jars full of Phillips bits back at home. “Exactly,” Young says with a laugh. “And God forbid you should lose that (free) bit.” Oh, I would lose it—so I bought a couple of spares. If you haven’t bought deck screws in a while, you’ll see other improvements on that aisle. Quality modern screws hold up better to the corrosive chemicals in treated lumber, for instance. That was an issue when newer treatment formulas replaced older chemicals. The new stuff doesn’t contain arsenic, but it’s tougher on metal fasteners. You might also see fine threads up near
the head of the screw, above the coarser threads below. That can improve performance in a couple of ways, Young says. It helps keep the screw from backing out with normal expansion and contraction of the wood, as the wood cycles from wet to dry and back again. And it makes the screws easier to remove when it’s time to make repairs. Being better able to remove screws for repairs is a huge plus. (Just ask a deck owner who has painted over screw heads, then discovered that a heavy coating makes screws hard to remove.) Those fine threads help the screw come out without damaging the decking board or the joist underneath. “It slides right back out the same way it went in,” Young says. For the record, the Torx drive performs well. Also, so far, I haven’t lost that free bit.
