PULTEGROUP ACQUIRES INNOVATIVE CONSTRUCTION GROUP PulteGroup, Inc. recently announced the acquisition of Innovative Construction Group (ICG), a leading off-site solutions provider focused on single-family and multifamily wood-framed construction. Based in Jacksonville, Fla., ICG’s comprehensive framing solutions include design services, manufactured wall panels, roof trusses, floor systems and on-site installation to provide a full-frame shell construction process. ICG will remain a stand-alone operation and continue serving its existing customer base and builder clients. The acquisition of ICG builds on PulteGroup’s unique commonly-managed plan platform and its long-term strategy to drive greater production efficiency and overall build quality. Off-site solutions can deliver high quality framing components with less waste and help address trade labor shortages that are a persistent problem for the construction industry. T

he new traffic flow on North Tryon Street has some Charlotteans driving in circles, narrowly avoiding head-on collisions. There are roundabouts, and they’re pretty confusing. What isn’t confusing, though, is the perfectly simple and convenient Providence Road corridor. Offering a straight shot from Uptown to Union County and saturated with plenty of opportunities for shopping, golf, real estate and more, this is one thoroughfare that begs to be driven and enjoyed. “There’s an indescribable energy along this road—it’s full of life and activity,” says Lisa McCrossan with Ivester Jackson Distinctive Properties. “You can go all the way from Uptown to Waxhaw, and along that journey there’s easy access to beautiful neighborhoods, shopping, restaurants and schools. I personally love the drive and appreciate how much Charlotte has grown and continues to grow each time I drive this street.” New construction is booming all along this convenient corridor. On the Center City side, Simonini’s The Enclave at Providence Park is going in, offering luxury du jour just minutes from SouthPark. Several townhomes are popping up on corner lots, and then between Fairview and Pineville-Matthews Road there are single-family developments like Ashton Ridge, Rea Enclave and Alexander Crest. And, of course, the bustling Waverly area is still seeing all kinds of new construction. “I feel like developers are building

on every square inch of this beautiful road,” says McCrossan. “There is so much new development along Providence Road right now. The market’s only going to continue to improve with all these new construction options.” Beyond the new construction, Providence Road offers a variety of housing to suit a number of different buyers. “There’s everything from upscale to affordable housing, including single-family homes, townhomes and condos,” says Cindy Barnes with Allen Tate Company. “Myers Park and Eastover have always been top-tier neighborhoods with many executives wanting a quick commute to the office. Further along Providence, there is a variety of less expensive neighborhoods like Providence Park, Lansdowne, Beverly Crest and Providence Country Club, which are popular due to proximity to places of worship or nearby shops, restaurants and schools.” With the amount of ground this road covers, it unsurprisingly offers something for everyone. “The feel close to Uptown is urban with an influx of younger residents occupying new apartments,” Barnes says. “Folks of all ages like walking to commercial areas above the Queens and Providence intersection or to the newly renovated Strawberry Hill retail center at Fairview Road. Further out, the feel is more suburban with a concentration of families who usually need to drive to destinations.

However, Waverly is the exception as many residents are able to walk to retail and entertainment there.” The corridor is easily accessible to a number of amenities. “On the upper end of Providence Road, there are both upscale and quirky options like boutiques, restaurants and the terrific Manor Theatre, offering independent films,” Barnes says. “In mid-Charlotte, the Jewish Community Center, or the ‘J,’ is a big draw for many people. Further out, there is a wide variety of restaurants, big box stores and tennis and country clubs. The far end boasts Waverly, which has my favorite restaurant Via Roma.” “Don’t forget Tiff’s Cookies—they are delicious,” adds McCrossan. “Waverly also offers live music in the summer and is a great place for people watching. The Arboretum is a great spot with a large Harris Teeter, good stores and restaurants like Portofino’s. If you’re on the hunt for a home among established retail businesses and wonderful restaurants, then Providence Road is definitely the place to be.” The real estate market mirrors the diversity along this convenient stretch of roadway. “The market depends on the area,” says Barnes. “Close to town, there is little inventory, especially affordable homes that are updated, the preference for most buyers. Properties that are updated and appropriately priced get multiple offers. But the lack of inventory holds down the number of sales.”

himsy is something fanciful or unusual presented in a fun way. It is meant to make you smile and stop to enjoy its playful style. Every room needs a little touch of whimsy to become authentic. So where do we find these touches? Chances are, you

already have pieces in your collections, but may not be using them to their humorous potential. This is a classic example of less is more. The key is ‘a touch’—not a room full of strange objects. There is a fine line between whimsy and eccentric. For example, you can have an artfully arranged grouping of

I love to frame funny cards I find or receive, especially seasonal ones. Valentine’s Day is coming, and it could be the perfect opportunity to try out this idea. Use a simple black or gold frame and place your card on the entryway table or mantel. Then, watch your guests smile as they discover it. Flower pots and vases are a wonderful source of quirkiness. Perhaps it’s an animal face or the image of an African mask—whatever you’re passionate about

or catches your eye and makes you smile. But use only one vase or a pair of fun pots. You can combine it with coordinating pots in similar colors or small printed patterns such as stripes or checks. Using items in an unintended fashion is another way to create a quirky look. Fill a wooden or ceramic bowl with books with funny titles, hang a cool vintage hat on your hall tree or place just about anything under a glass cloche. I have a significant collection of little characters I love to use every chance I get. At Easter, I enjoy lining up a row of small felt rabbits in spring colored dresses along a plain windowsill. It is nondescript, making it the perfect muse for creating a whimsical accent. I’ve hung all types of playful little signs around his neck, placed him under a glass dome and even put

a top hat on him for a Kentucky Derby party and discreetly placed him on the bar cart. I’ve pretty much had it with the wooden sign fad. It seems they’re everywhere you look. I would rather express my wit in clever indirect ways. These added decorating touches are meant to be cheeky, not bold.

Critter catching Readers weigh in with tips for trapping mice by Allen Norwood

W

e’ve all learned the old adage that a mouse can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime. The message is that you need to plug even the smallest holes to keep the little rascals out. It’s good advice. We’ve also heard along the way that if a mouse can squeeze its head through

a hole, the rest of the body can follow. I’m pretty sure I’ve written that. Poke around online and you’ll discover articles and videos asserting the same thing. I found one source that explained it’s because mice don’t have collarbones. Never thought about it, but, no, I’ve

never run into a mouse with broad, square shoulders. So if the head can get through, the skinny shoulders and rest of the tiny, flexible skeleton should follow. Then again, not all mice read newspaper columns and click on YouTube videos.

Or watch their diets. Consider the mouse that found itself trapped in a hole in a garbage can at the Sloan home. It wiggled its head through—but the hips didn’t quite clear. It was stuck tight. “There are days like this for the human,” Cynthia Sloan said by email.

“As a retired pastor and counselor, it reminds me of life: those days when you get stuck and can’t go forward and clearly can’t back up.” I opened the photo she included with her message. Yep, we’ve all had days like that. This was one lucky mouse, though. With a little help, it was freed to go on its way. Which means it’s probably out there—looking for a dime-size hole to wiggle back in. I got a double handful of emails after a column earlier this month about my experience with mouse bait blocks. Something hauled a block away, you might remember. I had placed it on the floor to monitor any rodent activity—and some active critter made off with it. I chose the block instead of bait, I explained, because the peanut butter I’ve used in the past attracted ants. Ted Dasynich of Mooresville said there’s a better bait than peanut butter or the traditional cheese. “A slice of Slim Jim is perfect trap bait for mice or rats,” he wrote. “I learned that from professional exterminators. Works for me every time.” He included a picture of a couple of mice lured to their fate by nibble-size tidbits of the dried sausage stick. I like this tactic for several reasons. First, it’s an excuse to buy Slim Jims.

They’re not the healthiest of snacks, but then you’re not buying them for yourself. You’re bringing them home to keep the mice at bay. Your conscience is clear. You bait the trap with a sliver—and eat the rest of the stick only because it would be wasteful not to. Also, you could leave the trap baited for days and days, because a Slim Jim basically has a shelf life of forever. One reader said he’s been using glue traps in his shop with lots of success. “They are excellent at getting rid of large insects,” he said. He has had to rescue a hoppy toad and a lizard, but otherwise they do a good job controlling mice. I’ve avoided the glue traps because I don’t trust myself to check them regularly. Wouldn’t want anything to struggle until it starved—certainly not one of our pet lizards that live behind the downspouts. Turns out, though, that you can indeed free a mouse—or lizard—from a glue trap. It takes patience and vegetable oil. You’ll find instructions online, along with that information about mouse collarbones.
