M

ichelle Campos of Reside Realty is a leading agent in the Davidson area, where she’s been selling homes for about eight years. She also happens to live in Davidson and has fallen in love with the charming town. While she grew up in Charlotte, she appreciates Davidson for its laid-back, friendly atmosphere. “I ride my bike everywhere,” she says. While the town has always been a popular, less bustling alternative to the Charlotte area, it’s become even more so over the past few years. Now that the toll road project has been completed, it’s easier than ever for Davidson residents to commute to and from Charlotte. “The improved accessibility to Charlotte has made the area even more desirable,” says Campos. “The market is incredibly strong.” AN ACTIVE COMMUNITY Campos says that Davidson is the perfect place for an outdoors enthusiast like herself to find a fun and fulfilling home. “It’s a very outdoorsy community,” says Campos.

It’s also the kind of town where you can get to know people just by running into them, especially if you frequent the same places. “You start to see the same faces over time, just by being out and about,” Campos says. Besides biking nearly everywhere, she also loves visiting the public tennis courts in downtown or walking on the extensive network of Greenway trails. Even if you’re not a huge sports fan, there’s plenty to do to get out and about. For instance, the town hosts a free summer concert series on the Green in downtown, where you can put out your lawn chairs and enjoy spending an evening outdoors with the community. HOT HOODS One of the best things about Davidson is also one of its biggest obstacles for home buyers—the town has a lot of strict rules as a planning board and is very careful to avoid overdeveloping the area. “They save a lot of trees and natural beauty,” says Campos, “but it also drives up home prices.” It’s part of

why the market is so strong. Plenty of people want to live in the area, but new development is limited. Right now, Campos says downtown Davidson and River Run are the most sought-after neighborhoods, but for totally different reasons. “People specifically want one or the other,” says Campos, explaining that each fits different lifestyles. River Run provides the country club lifestyle while downtown Davidson offers walkability to local bars, restaurants and festivals. For new developments, Campos recommends checking out the Narrow Passage neighborhood or Kenmare. Homes in Narrow Passage fall in the $700,000s with tons of beautiful green space and designated conservation spaces. Kenmare homes are slightly more affordable in the $400,000s with tree-lined areas connected to River Run. But if you’re interested, don’t wait too long to check out the available homes in these areas; as Campos emphasizes, the Davidson market just keeps getting stronger with no signs of slowing down.

Sensational slips Modern slipcovered sofas blend classic with comfortable by Vicki Donatelli

“S

omething’s Gotta Give” with Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson is one of my favorite movies. The plot is wonderful, but it’s the set design that captured my heart. This might sound funny to those of you who can’t remember the title of a movie, much less what the living room looked like, but the set is one of the most compelling aspects of a great love story.

The decor is the subtle force that draws you into the story. Even if you aren’t consciously aware, your mind notices. In this cinema classic, the living room is welcoming and stylish. The blue-and-white striped living room rug started a revolution in the rug industry that still endures today, 17 years later. The pale blue slipcovered sofas ignited a living style that identifies the classic, relaxed look so many of us can relate to.

The home was in the Hamptons, but the look translates to all corners of the globe. If the idea of slipcovers recalls visions of messiness and constant tugging and tucking, rest assured today’s furniture is different. The same attention to detail incorporated into standard upholstered furniture is applied to pieces intended to be slipcovered. White slipcovers are my favorite. They’re perfect in a beachfront vacation home or an Italian villa. The style is relaxed and inviting without being locked into a specific mode. I know many of you are afraid of white furniture. Just the idea of having someone spilling red wine on a cushion stops your heart. Unlike tra-

ditional upholstered pieces, slipcovers can be “slipped” off and thrown in the washer or sent to the dry cleaners. If you select a performance fabric for your slipcover, you can clean even mustard or ketchup off with water and a clean cloth. Black and white décor is such a classic that you can’t help but fall in love with the look. It isn’t just for modern or contemporary homes—it fits beautifully into rustic or farmhouse settings too. The secret is to anchor the room with a black and white rug, top it with white slipcovered furniture and accessorize with natural plants, wood, black and white lamps and other accessories. Small condos and apartments can be visually elevated by mixing shades

of turquoise to watery blues with a white sofa. Finish the look with natural seagrass chairs and coordinating throw pillows. Some DIY decorators are happy with one and done, but others like to redecorate every couple of years. Slipcovers allow you to make color changes without spending a fortune. You can go from chaste white to approachable brown or trendy grey. Don’t just think slipcovers for indoor spaces, though. Today’s furniture manufacturers have mastered the art of creating beautiful outdoor furniture with durable slipcovers. White covers may bring images of the Greek Isles, but a pale gray or even darker fabric shade might be more durable for your home.

Spring prep Take your home from winter to spring with these simple tips by Julie Cooper

E

ven though Charlotte can’t make up its mind as to what season it is— sunny and 70 one day and snow flurries the next—the calendar says spring is here. So, as the grass defrosts and trees begin to bloom, now’s the time to start the winter-to-spring transition. Vacuum under the sofa, clear out some drawers and clean the windows for all the extra light that’s about to stream in. And then get to work incorporating these expert tips and trends for a little more spring in your step—and in your home.

“Think of spring as a time to let go of anything you don’t love,” says top Charlotte-area designer Christina Britt Lewis with the redesign company. “Give your rooms the side eye, and if you see things you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful, sell them or give them away. Think less, but better. And remember, new seasons do not have to mean new stuff.” Lewis is the queen of repurposing the furniture and accessories in your home to make them feel brand new again.

SUNDAY MARCH 22 2020

“We are big believers in keeping the most expensive things in your home classic, timeless and predominantly neutral so you can transition to a new season or a new look easily and affordably,” she explains. “For example, we purchased a gorgeous white custom sofa with the most durable fabric—even buffalo wing sauce wipes right off of it—for our new townhome from Danielle and Steve Sechrest of The CoCoCo in Cornelius. I love that I can totally change the look and feel of things by switching out pillows and throws. I always recommend keeping your ‘spendy’ items classic and make transitions with accessories.” Before heading to the dollar aisle of a big box store or hitting up your favorite vintage homeware shop for some new accessories, Lewis recommends taking time to attune to the feeling you want your home to have. “Like any change, let spring be a time to reflect on who you are and what you love,” she advises. “Figure

out what makes you happy and what brings you peace. Once you answer those questions, relentlessly go after what you want. How we live matters. When you love coming home, the ones you love will too.” You may also want to consider the latest trends when ushering in the warmer weather. Here, global influences, natural elements, cozy-andcomfortable and so-called “sassy grandma” styles reign supreme. One way to take from these trends is to consider your favorite travel destination and incorporate it into the design. If it’s a seaside spot that’s left you swooning, consider adding in a rattan hanging swing, some handwoven textiles, seagrass and kilim rugs. Whether or not you have items from that exact spot matters not. Thanks to Etsy, you don’t have to travel far and wide to make your home feel eclectic, collected and uniquely your own. If “sassy-grandma” sounds more your style, you’re ready to go bold. “Floral fabrics and wallpaper, small

prints, mixing patterns, bold color, highcontrast, dark-and-moody walls and portraits in old gold frames sum up this style perfectly,” says Lewis. “This style has an ‘it’s my home and I can decorate however I want to’ kind of attitude. Fearlessness is trending, and it’s about time. Do what you love and what makes you happy. Who cares what the Joneses do? Sassy grandmas don’t. Why did we ever spend so much energy trying to keep up with them anyway?” For a cozy and comfortable vibe, the transition from winter to spring will be even easier. Winter pairs nicely with cozy. However, keeping that feeling well into springtime can be a little tricky but completely doable. The first step is replacing flannel bedding with breathable cotton or linen sheets. Then, layer in pops of sunny color everywhere. Finally, bring the outdoors in with some beautiful green plants and flowers. While autumn and winter are all about fall foliage, pumpkins and evergreen,

warmer months beg for fresh blooms from the farmer’s market, potted herbs and even palm fronds. Lewis recommends sprucing up the outdoor areas as well as the indoors. “After deep cleaning and ‘Marie Kondo-ing’ every part of my home, I buy some fresh plants,” she says. “Pansies in pretty pots and hanging ferns on the porch mean spring to me.” As the days get longer, the breeze gets warmer and the songbirds start singing, gently incorporate these beautiful design tips to awaken your home from its winter slumber. And remember, at the end of the day, you’re doing this for your enjoyment—not to copycat a picture-perfect Pinterest post. “Off-trend is on trend these days,” says Lewis. “Make your home tell your story. What makes you happy? Make your home feel uniquely you rather than what you see on social media. Individuality shines in a sea of sameness.”

New life If you’re beginning spring projects, check out new and used items at Habitat ReStores by Allen Norwood

T

here are gallons of bargain paint and stain stacked on pallets, plus walls of brushes priced for less than they would be at retail stores. You’ll find garden chemicals and hand tools along with chandeliers and ceiling fans. And if you find a used, corded electric drill at the Habitat ReStore in Mooresville—there’s a good reason you might, Wayne Mowery explains—it has been tested to confirm that it works. Mowery is a Habitat volunteer, and he tries out tools and other electric devices before putting them on shelves. If something doesn’t function, he tinkers to see whether it can be salvaged. He has taken drills home and rewired them. “I hate to see a hand drill thrown in the dumpster. If there’s a frayed cord, we’re not allowed to sell it. So, I fix it.” It’s not unusual to find corded tools at ReStore outlets—because these days, DIYers want convenient battery power. When batteries wear out, some owners donate battery-powered tools rather than buy new batteries. You might spot a battery-powered tool

on the shelf that’s compatible with a set you already own. On a recent Saturday morning, Mowery hefted a well-used Black and Decker trimmer. No battery, but it was 18 volt, a common size. “Somebody might already have a battery for this at home.” There are lots of reasons you might want to start your spring chores with a visit to a ReStore. Low prices, of course, and volunteers like Wayne Mowery. The regional Habitat for Humanity— created earlier this year when Charlotte Habitat merged with Our Towns Habitat—operates seven stores. Someone like Mowery goes over stuff behind the scenes at every store. Other Habitat organizations operate ReStore outlets across the area, so there’s likely one near you. Mowery’s father taught industrial arts at the high school and college level. Mowery laughs when he remembers that other adults told his dad, “The boy is not going to graduate, so you might as well give him a hammer.” Mowery, 79, did graduate, though.

He built a career in banking information technology, which ultimately brought him to Charlotte. He retired in 2007. Mowery and store manager Komlan Abbey said early spring is a busy time for donations, so it’s a good time to scour the shelves for bargains. They also see lots of donations at the end of the year. If you’re considering a trip to a ReStore to help with your spring chores and upgrades, here are a few tidbits for you to know to make the most of your visit. Mowery doesn’t test chandeliers and ceiling fans. There’s just no manageable way, he says. But he checks to make sure the item is complete. He might borrow a part from one fan or lighting fixture to repair another—and he has plastic bins full of parts in his lair at the back of the store. Abbey says a woman recently came in looking for a chandelier part. He told her, “Oh, I’ve got that,” and plunged into the bins to look for it. Indeed, he found it. Some lighting styles sell faster than others, Mowery says. For instance, flush-mount ceiling fixtures seem to go

quickly. If you’re looking for a particular design, you might have to check the shelves regularly. And remember that any fixture (yes, including brass) can be given new life with a can of spray paint. “Oh, absolutely,” Mowery says. “I see that all the time.” Lots of donations to ReStores are new items. I spotted paint brushes and saw blades and racks of drill bits. I saw shoppers checking out a couple of console electric fireplaces. Mowery says he might come in to find, oh, a truck load of screwdrivers. Here’s a final tidbit worth knowing: If it’s on display, even new, the price might be about half what it would be at a retail store. Mowery says, “Those are the guidelines we try to follow—half.” So if Lowe’s generously donates unsold stuff, items get marked down before they go on ReStore shelves.
