M/I HOMES OFFERS VIRTUAL APPOINTMENTS FOR HOMES IN POPLIN GROVE COMMUNITY M/I Homes is offering virtual appointments for homes in Poplin Grove, a new community located at 803 Unionville - Indian Trail Road West in Indian Trail. The Union County community features ranch and two-story homes from 2,100 to 3,564 square feet. Prices start at $344,990. Along with home sites, move-in ready homes are now under construction and available for purchase. Poplin Grove’s model home is expected to open in late April and will showcase the Sonoma, one of M/I’s most popular home plans. With five bedrooms and up to four bathrooms, it offers plenty of space for a growing or multi-generational family. This flexible plan also allows for either a two- or three-car garage. Interior spaces will include a formal dining room, spacious kitchen, study, rec room, loft, main-floor guest suites and open family gathering areas. The exteriors will combine James Hardie siding with stone or brick accents. Home buyers will be able to choose from a variety of outdoor living options, including a screened patio and covered porch. I

n the modern world, it has become clearer than ever that time is the ultimate luxury. It’s precious, and all the money in the world can’t buy more—as many busy professionals, billionaires and stayat-home moms know all too well. That’s why it’s critical to spend time as wisely as possible. Once the workday is over, nothing feels better than gathering with family and friends in meaningful ways. Arguably, no place offers that convenience and luxury more than a country club, especially those found in South Charlotte. Buying into these clubs is like buying time. Everything from golf to activities for the kids, fine and casual dining, community centers and well-manicured common grounds are all part of the package and right at your fingertips. Not to mention, most clubs are located close to the action of Uptown and near grocery stores, parks, retail centers and toprated schools. “Easy access to activities and services continues to grow in importance with mom and dad both working these days, making a convenient lifestyle a necessity,” says Cindy Barnes with Allen Tate Companies. “South Charlotte’s country clubs fulfill their purpose well by offering a wide range of activities, like golf,

swimming and tennis. They’re also close to first-rate schools, shopping centers and service providers.” There’s also a club for everyone— so no matter what makes life easier for you, South Charlotte has your match. “Quail Hollow, with its limited membership and high cost, attracts those in corporate leadership or specialized professions,” says Barnes. “Myers Park, Ballantyne, Carmel, Raintree and Providence country clubs attract more families and have programs that reflect that. Charlotte Country Club attracts a different membership with its unique old-school but hip location. And Piper Glen is a more golf- and business-oriented club.” The country clubs in South Charlotte have a suburban vibe that works for a lot of people. “Neighborhoods are generally lush and manicured,” Barnes says. ”People walk their dogs, push a stroller, bicycle and meet at the mailbox for a chat. Families often join clubs with a roster of summer activities for children. Other clubs focus on golf or fine dining, bringing together business associates for networking and fun.” While the golf lover has always loved South Charlotte for the opportunities, the area is also growing leaps and bounds, bringing a

diverse array of dining options too. “South Charlotte is now a ‘foodie’ haven,” says Barnes. “Fine dining, ethnic cuisine and local Southern fare are all around us.” “I really enjoy shopping and dining out in both Rea Farms and Waverly, which are still relatively new shopping centers in South Charlotte,” adds Lisa McCrossan with Ivester Jackson Distinctive Properties. “Colonel Francis Beatty Park is also a gem, tucked away off Weddington Matthews Road. There are bike and walking trails, fields and a lake, among other activities. It’s the perfect place to go on a beautiful day.” The homes inside these clubs, with their lush yards and brilliant architecture, can be hard to leave and make staying home quite a treat—even amidst social-distancing protocols. “While the pandemic has pushed pause on the higher-end home sales, properties right around $1 million and below are seeing plenty of action in this area,” says McCrossan. “It’s such a fun place to live with high energy and lots to do. I only see growth in this area. People choose South Charlotte for its energy and proximity to shopping, restaurants and the highway, but even more, because in only minutes they can hop on a golf course.”

Stir crazy Creative projects to kick boredom to the curb by Vicki Donatelli

G

etting a little stir crazy? Me too. I’ve found lots of overlooked tasks to do around my house, but still I long for creativity. While cleaning the attic—yes, I did that too—I found lots of half-finished crafting projects. One of my best finds was a beautiful needlepoint project given to me by my friend, British designer Kaffe Fassett, in 1998. I started the kit, but life distracted me and I never finished. It

is just what I need to keep my hands busy while I binge watch “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” If you’re not familiar with Fassett, please check out his books. My favorite is “Glorious Interiors” published by Ebury Press. His style is so outrageous you can’t help but fall in love with his brilliant approach to pattern and color. Even before the lockdown I’ve been yearning to get back

into sewing. Not just pillows and simple quick sew projects—I mean the Chanel suit-type skills. I’m a better-thanaverage seamstress, but I need a fine tailoring instructor. Turns out there are plenty of online courses. So, while in the attic I organized my sewing supplies preparing for Tailoring 101. Everyone needs a creative outlet. We can only read so many books and watch so much TV. It might be returning to an old hobby or developing new skills. I have a friend who is learning French—now that’s ambition. This is an even more demanding time for our kids. Can you even imagine what it would have been like to stay with our parents 24/7, and for them to also become our teachers? Their only refuge away from us

is their room. They need a creative project that will take their minds off the daily boredom and express their unique personalities. This just may be the solution—holographic decals from Tempaper. Their designers wished upon a star and traveled over the rainbow to capture the fun and fantasy of holographic wall decals. They have incorporated favorite symbols, like hearts, the moon and stars, lightning bolts and rainbows. Designer Bobby Berk, star of Netflix’s “Queer Eye,” has partnered with Tempaper. His design of holographic eye wall decals in shimmering hues serves as a reminder that anyone and everyone should be seen in all their colors. They are easy to install and they come in sheets. of the design there are five to 48 decals per sheet and they retail for $12.99. You simply peel them off and stick them onto the wall, notebooks, car windows, countertops, tile floors...you get the idea. They are temporary or as permanent as you want them to be. They are available online at tempaper.com. We have all just about exhausted the left side of our brains trying to find solutions to the crazy, extended lockdown. This is the perfect opportunity to exercise the rightbrain for a while. Escape into an old or new expression of creativity. Perhaps you should put a few star decals on your own bedroom ceiling.

Clever kitchens Employ these top kitchen storage tips and trends for a beautiful space that works by Julie Cooper

O

verstuffed drawers, Tupperware lids falling out of cabinets, no countertop space and what’s that smell coming from the pantry? If any of these things remind you of your kitchen, then it’s time to give it a big spring clean. The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s the place we gather, we eat, we laugh and we cry over a pint of Ben & Jerry’s. Since so much time is spent here, why not make it time well spent instead of time searching for the right pot lid or corkscrew? Research shows people are happier and think more clearly when the space around them is tidy. So use this extra time at home to do something to make your life better. Transform your kitchen into its most beautifully organized,

Marie Kondo-esque self with the following tips and tricks from local area experts. Simplicity coach and space creator Jennifer Burnham with Pure and Simple recommends taking inventory before diving in. “Less is more, and we don’t need as much as we think we do,” she says. “We buy into the notion that we need gadgets and appliances to save time because that is what we lack most these days. It’s easy to overcompensate while losing space in the meantime. If you have more stuff than space, no amount of organization wizardry will remedy the problem. Sort, group and purge before organizing.” Once you bring back some balance into your kitchen, it’s time to get organized. “It’s best to think of the room’s contents in categories when organizing or designing a high-traffic space in the home,” Burnham says. “From there, organizing becomes easy when you think of how you use an

item. Store items you use often in easyto-access places—say, near the stove or dishwasher. For the items you use less often, put them in harder-to-reach places like a deep cabinet or over the refrigerator.” Beyond this, the hottest trend in kitchen organization is not simply maximizing space but making clever use of that space. Homeowners are thinking outside the box when it comes to their storage wants and needs. Atypical storage solutions of today include narrow utensil pullouts, drawer charging stations and even toe-kick feed drawers for pets. Custom stainless-steel drawer inserts are also on the rise. While these are all great ideas, they also have the tendency to become budget busters. “Effective storage doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg,” stresses Burnham. “Instead of buying a custom-fit drawer insert, just install a shelf liner to keep the drawer organizer you have from moving around. It’s my top-secret tip for keeping drawers neat and tidy.”

“Also, utilize home stores like TJ Maxx and Michaels to buy storage containers for a few dollars,” she continues. “Buy similar styles in similar sizes to keep it pleasing to the eye and also reusable should you want to move it later to a linen closet or bathroom. Forget round containers—they waste a lot of space collectively. Squareshaped containers are the way to go.” Before certified professional organizer Laurie Jones Martin of Simplicity Organizers gets started on her clients’ organization projects, she breaks the process down for them in three stages—analyze, recognize and action. This helps them identify the types of activities that take place in their kitchens, the zones their kitchen has and the primary items and supplies needed for each zone. “Today, what we typically think about when organizing the kitchen are work zones. And that work zone contains everything you use to perform each task in that zone,” Martin explains. “These zones include food storage, food prep, cooking, baking, serving, eating, clean up, making coffee and chilling wine, as well as lunch

prep, entertaining, homework and the junk drawer. Your coffee zone would include the coffee maker, coffee, filters, pods, cups, sugar, etc.” Once folks recognize their zones, Martin asks her clients what is working in their kitchens and what isn’t. “Once they identify these, I invite them to let go of anything they no longer use or love. Then we pull everything out of the cabinets and group those items by category and activity zone,” she says. Her best tips for organizing the kitchen? Let go of odd shaped platters and cookware that are rarely used, always keep lids on Tupperware, use a Sharpie to date canned food and spices and use drawer dividers. “Label everything,” she says. “If there’s a junk drawer, make sure it’s organized and functional. Keep in mind the S.I.M.P.L.E. Method—sort, identify, map it out, label and maintain. Above all, remember the kitchen is a vital part of the home. We are in and out of this space many times a day. Having a kitchen that is organized and functions well will help you begin and end your day with more peace and harmony.”

Fit at home Gyms may be closed, but home chores can offer a worthwhile workout by Allen Norwood

O

ur neighbor, Darlene, said she had fussed gently at her husband, Gary, for spraying weeds. That’s correct: A spouse, during this interminable stretch of sheltering in place, actually was chided for getting up off the recliner and tackling spring yard work. “I told him to quit killing those weeds,” she explained from the appropriate distance when she told me about their exchange. “Weeding is my exercise!” Turns out Darlene is on the trendy cutting edge. Exercising at home is a thing. Lots of us are looking for alternate ways to work out now that gym and yoga classes are off limits. In one quick search I found a double handful of stories about the home chores that burn the most calories and serve as the ideal substitutes for traditional workouts, from sources as disparate as Shape, Good Housekeeping and Men’s Journal. Experts agree that stooping and

stretching are important parts of any exercise regimen. For instance, getting on your knees to wash the floor with a rag and reaching up to dust the ceiling fans both were mentioned as healthy chores. Indoors, vacuuming is good exercise; outdoors, raking leaves ranks high. There’s the “dishwasher squat” from Shape magazine, which parents are going to do often with all the kids at home for three meals a day. (Every. Single. Day.) And the “playtime plank,” which asks parents to pick up Legos and toss them into the toy box with one hand while holding the rigid plank pose with the other arm. (Which, I suppose, is better than stepping on Legos barefoot.) Good Housekeeping says that doing laundry can be a good workout—with no hint that moms and dads go to spinning class to escape from the laundry room. Men’s Journal says washing the car offers enough bending and stretching to

be a decent workout. Darlene will be glad to know that on the magazine’s list of 10 terrific home-chore exercises, No. 8 is weeding. When you tackle a home chore, don’t forget to wear your Fitbit or other personal fitness tracker. As I’ve written, the little gizmos don’t know whether you’re pounding the treadmill or mowing the backyard. Either way, digital fireworks go off when you hit 10,000 steps—and, either way, it’s rewarding. I mowed the yard and circled the house a few times with a wheelbarrow the other day. In addition to mowing, I’ve been hauling wood chips to spread in the natural areas. Our neighbor on the other side, Al, had some trees removed and ground up, and was generous enough to share. His tree guys dumped a half dozen Bobcat loads of chips at the end of our driveway. When I came in, the step count on my Fitbit had reached 8,913.

Sometime later, maybe when I was taking out the trash, the count reached the magic number and my wrist sparkled. Yes! Then, while we watched the late news, it vibrated to remind me that I hadn’t walked 250 steps during the most recent hour. Oh, come on! I just hit 10,000! And hauled all those chips! Gadgets don’t care. They’re every bit as relentless as personal trainers. Anyway, I told Darlene I was going to write about home and garden chores as exercise and asked if Gary had quit spraying her weeds. She said, “Oh, yes,” and pointed with a smile to weeds she was pulling from her bed of blooming iris. “I have all I need.” Thoughtful, which is what all of us need to be to nudge things back toward normal.
