DID YOU KNOW? Dilworth has a strong community association that has been active during this uncertain time. Thanks to a plea in the Dilworth Express weekly e-newsletter, the Dilworth Cares committee raised $9,000 for the Dilworth Soup Kitchen to help those in need.

G

eographically it may be hard to tell where one ends and the other begins, but vibewise Dilworth and South End are as different as night and day. These neighboring Charlotte-area suburbs are some of the most sought after in the city thanks to their walkability and proximity to Center City. But that’s where their similarities end. “For the person who wants to live car-free, Dilworth and South End are perfect choices,” says Sarah Curme with Dickens Mitchener. “With proximity to grocery stores, retail, multiple parks and greenways, and Uptown, you have it all here.” Dilworth absolutely oozes charm. Being Charlotte’s first suburb, it features a treasure trove of lovingly restored period architecture with the craftsman bungalow style reigning supreme. The neighborhood boasts wide, tree-lined streets with the beautiful Latta Park smack dab in the center. “Latta Park is a real gem,” Curme says. “It’s 1 mile around, making it great for a nice walk outside. You can also go and grab lunch from a local place like Mr. K’s, Yafo or a cheese platter from Dilworth Tasting Room and then head over to find a nice quiet spot for a picnic to relax and enjoy nature.” With the neighborhood’s welcoming sidewalks and iconic front porches, residents are always out and about, strolling with their children and dogs.

And, somehow, they always seem to have time for a wave or a quick chat with neighbors. It’s an area that offers the perfect fusion of historic charm and modern amenities with a strong, family-friendly appeal. “In historic Dilworth, homes with charm and character sometimes come with quirky floor plans too, and they almost always have amazing front porches,” says Elizabeth Phares with Allen Tate. “Outside of the historic footprint, though, there are some fantastic new builds. Overall, there’s a real sense of community in Dilworth with an oldfashioned atmosphere and timeless architecture.” There’s also a number of things to do without going far. “My teenage boys love being able to walk out the front door and ride their bikes to a greenway or Freedom and Latta Parks,” Phares says. “More recently, they’re really loving the curbside pickup at JJ’s too. With COVID-19, it’s great seeing residents trying to support local restaurants and businesses. We hear horns blowing for healthcare workers and first responders, see bears in windows for kids’ bear hunts and watch neighbors come together to organize food drives.” Nudging gently alongside Dilworth’s idyllic borders is South End. Quite unlike Dilworth, this neighborhood is lively and has more of a high-rise apartment vibe. It’s full of

breweries, nightlife, art and retail and has a real industrial-chic feel to it. It’s home to the historic Atherton Mill, which has been reimagined with trendy artisan shops, and buzzing restaurants abound nearby. Some consider it the heartbeat of Charlotte. “Only a hop, skip and jump from Dilworth is the ultra-hip and trendy South End,” says Phares. “It has a lot of vertical living—think high density in a smaller footprint. The area is just booming too with new commercial, retail and multi-family development.” “There’s a lot of activity around the hospital area with proposed office, retail and possible housing space,” adds Curme, such as apartments and condos. “The long vacant pumpkin lot on East Boulevard is set to be redeveloped as well. South End continues to attract good retail activity.” As far as the market goes, these areas continue to be a hit with prospective homebuyers. “The real estate market is doing well in spite of COVID-19,” says Curme. “Certainly, the virus has slowed things down, but homes are also selling virtually. With the phased reopening, we think more people will want to exit apartment life. We also believe that big-city dwellers may head to markets like Charlotte. We see lots of upsides to what’s happening now.”

ow that you’ve been sitting for way too long, you may have noticed your furniture arrangement doesn’t provide enough comfortable seating for the entire family. Some chairs have a good view of the television while others offer a better setup for conversation. As a designer, I detested having to accommodate my clients’

addiction to television. Worse yet, I was under some archaic bewitchment demanding the fireplace be the focal point of the room. Thankfully, I realized a good designer creates the perfect space their clients will enjoy and happily inhabit. Once I discovered swivel chairs, my life was transformed. Finally, I could provide my clients with a great view of the televi-

sion and the fireplace while creating an inspiring room. Although styles and sizes were limited, it still made my day. For those of you who might not be familiar with the swivel chair concept, let me enlighten you. This is a chair you can position in a straight forwardfacing position opposite the stationary sofa in the basic design layout. But bring in reality and the chair can easily be twirled 180 degrees to face the television or the fireplace. When two swivel chairs are positioned side by side they create a conversation zone, but rotate them 90 degrees and you have a face-to-face setting for when the gossip really gets juicy. I’m pleased to say today’s swivel chair market is filled with options. Whether your style is traditional or midcentury modern, you can find the perfect swivel chair solution for your home. shapes like the wing chair and narrowed the wings and arms and slipcovered it in Jette Linen. The form and fabric are casual yet classic. Another updated style that replaces the stationary cigar chair is the Banks. It is smaller in scale—only 26 inches wide. It is slipcovered in top-grain ebony leather. A pair of these and a small side table are possible in almost any living room or master bedroom corner. Expert tailoring of the timeless Kimble barrel shape provides a tight seat with clean lines. The flange seam detail ups its style and adds much needed interest and punch. We are all still wild about velvets. The Augustine swivel chair is larger in scale and detail. The luxurious poly-blend velvet is available in five designer colors. The dramatic channeling upholstery detail accords the fabric an even richer presence on all four sides.

What do you get when you merge a slipper chair with swivel action? The total solution to any occasional chair conundrum. The Sofia swivel offers armless lounge seating without taking up too much space. If you have the space, consider incorporating a pair of these in your living room setting. You won’t be disappointed. While you are sitting around today, consider how much versatility, style and comfort a swivel action chair in any style could improve your family’s next binge-watching experience. Stay safe!

wenty-three years ago Virginia native Shane McDevitt moved to the Queen City to launch his career in business. Fresh out of college, Shane’s path originally led from bartending at local Charlotte spots to Colorado’s snowboarding slopes right back to Charlotte. He went from a snowboarder to a topperforming Bell South sales rep to, now, a guru of all things Charlotte real estate, launching The McDevitt Agency 12 years ago. The McDevitt Agency brings vibrant, fresh energy to the local real-estate scene—and McDevitt has personally closed more than $150 million in real estate sales. Passionate about all things Charlotte, he says his work is marked by a genuine passion and hustle for the field and his clients. Q: Why Charlotte? A: “After graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in marketing and business management, I decided to pack up and move to Charlotte in 1997 to explore a bigger city with opportunities. In 1997, Charlotte was smaller with big aspirations of becoming a world-

class city. My plan was to stay for a few years and then move on to a larger city, but 23 years later I’m still here. I love this city, doing business in this city, raising our family in this city—and I’m here to stay!”

game but realized the corporate environment just wasn’t my style.”

Q: Did you immediately jump into launching your own business? A: “I bartended in Charlotte for a couple years before heading off to Colorado to live the ski-bum life. It was awesome, but the glory of being a broke snowboarder wore off as soon as the season came to an end. So, back to Charlotte I went to finally enter the ‘real world.’”

Q: When did real estate catch your attention? A: “Over those years, I had been building a passion for watching the city of Charlotte grow and was especially intrigued with residential real estate. It was exciting watching the urban growth in Uptown, exploring the quaint and established bungalow neighborhoods just outside the urban core, seeing the evolution of South Charlotte and driving around the waterfront condos and mansions on Lake Norman. In 2004, I let my manager at Bell South know I was going to enter the world of residential real estate. I got my real estate license, joined a well-established local real estate firm, teamed up with another real estate agent who I am still partnered up with today as co-owners of our firm, and rocked out! She was the organized one

Q: What career path did you take after the slopes? A: “With zero desire for a desk job and being accustomed to hustling for tips, I sought a commission-based sales job where I could interact with people and stay on the move. I convinced Bell South to hire me as a business sales rep. After a few years, I became one of their youngest global account managers. At 29 years old, I was at the top of my

Q: How would you describe your work ethic in three words? A: “Honest. Resilient. Hustle.”

who kept everything running smooth, and I was the sales and marketing one who never stopped talking or moving. The perfect team. We were killing it and became one of the top-producing teams at the firm.” Q: What first inspired you to take the leap to create your own company? A: “As the 2008 real estate market was crashing down around us, something had to change, and we saw that as our opportunity to open our own company and relaunch ourselves into this market with a fresh, new look. We decided to put all our chips on the table and launch The McDevitt Agency in May 2008. We quickly got a foothold, landed some big deals, got some big name clients. Here we are 12 years later and still thriving.” Q: How did you brand your company? A: “At that time, the branding and marketing of residential real estate firms in this area was pretty old school and bland, so we decided to bring something different. Funny as it may sound, I wasn’t

on social media, so I subscribed to magazines from NYC, Miami and L.A. solely to look at real estate ads and get inspiration from those markets. Instead of trying to mimic the style in Charlotte’s real estate scene, we wanted to create a company that was cool and on-trend but also buttoned up and professional.” Q: What sets The McDevitt Agency apart? A: “The reality is we have rockstar agents who are here to work hard, have fun and take care of our clients. That’s our mantra. Bottom line. That’s what we do.” Q: In just a few words, how would your clients or colleagues describe you as a person? A: “Genuine. Positive. Negotiator. On the move. And a little crazy.”

Q: How have you seen Charlotte change? A: “When I first arrived in January 1997, I drove my U-Haul to Charlotte and through the middle of Uptown because I wanted to see the excitement of the city. It was a Saturday afternoon, and there was not a soul in sight. I soon learned the term banker’s hours and that Charlotte was a Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 city. But Charlotte has evolved over the past 20-plus years. Our population continues to grow, businesses keep moving to Charlotte, the city skyline continues to expand, we have an established pro-sports and cultural arts scene, we are turning into a great culinary city— and an emerging destination city. The days of solely being called a banking city and running on banker’s hours is thankfully a thing of Charlotte’s past.”

SHANE’S FIVE MUST-HAVE’S FOR SUCCESS 1. The Morning “I’m a morning person. It’s the most productive and efficient time of my day. I like to get up way before the sun and listen to three five-minute podcasts that recap the current news in the world while I make and drink my single cup of morning coffee. I catch up on emails and write down my action plan for the day until I hear whichever one of our kids who wakes up first.” 2. My Family “My family morning ritual is getting my three kids out of bed, making breakfast and having our family morning chats at the kitchen table with my better half, Casie, and our kids (also referred to as The McNuggets), Annabelle, Hudson and Hannah. It’s the perfect slice-of-life to start my day.” 3. My Trainer “Before work three days a week, I work out with my trainer before heading off to work. This keeps me sane.” 4. Charlotte “On my days off, you’ll probably find me running around town with my family. Our kids are 6, 4 and 9 months, and you will see us running around the parks in Uptown, at the Whitewater Center, on the Greenway or Rail Trail, at Hornets games, at breweries or grilling out with friends. We just love Charlotte.” 5. Snowboarding “I started skiing at 5 years old when my parents would take us on a couple annual ski trips. I picked up snowboarding in college and still hit the slopes from time to time to get perspective about life and running a strong business.”

Getting the ‘yellow’ out of discolored plastic by Allen Norwood

T

he stuff costs $3.99, which is not very much, and it’s a real bargain if you’re looking for a creative way to restore tub jets and other plastic components around the house that have yellowed with time. A while back I wrote about a product called Salon Care crème, a peroxide gel sold in drugstores and beauty supply shops. Inventive homeowners discovered they can use it to remove the yellowing and restore the original color of plastic items, from electronic parts to bathroom vent fan covers. Especially, as I wrote, yellowed controls and jets on spas and jetted tubs. Exposure to the sun turns plastic yellow. Peroxide bleaches in sunlight, so if you slather on the gel and expose the item to sunlight, yellowing fades. Jets and buttons on spas and jetted tubs are especially bad. Tub pros say

that drives their customers crazy. They also say removing plastic tub parts to take them outside to take advantage of direct sunlight is a chore that most of us wouldn’t want to tackle. So I decided to try a trick I shared in that earlier column: I brushed the gel onto the jets in our tub, covered them with plastic wrap and bleached them in place. It worked, too, although my pictures don’t fully capture the change. I ordered a 16-ounce bottle of Salon Care crème from Sally Beauty. It was $3.99 plus shipping. It’s available as a liquid so, if you order, be sure you get the crème. It’s bottled in different strengths—I chose Salon Care 40. After I ordered the gel, I discovered the direct sun from the window doesn’t reach all the way across the tub this time of year. Didn’t know what difference that

would make. But (a) I had plenty of gel and (b) we’re all sheltering in place, looking for ways to keep busy. I also figured that if there was enough sun to yellow the jets, there should be enough to bleach them a bit. I painted the gel onto the jets and buttons, then covered them with plastic wrap held in place with masking tape. Before I applied the gel, I taped a piece of plastic wrap to the tub below each jet and button. Then I folded the pieces of wrap down and brushed on the Salon Care. I figured if I applied the gel first, it would run down and make it tough to tape across the bottom. After I applied the gel, I flipped the pieces of wrap up and taped the sides and top of each swatch. That worked fine. I left the gel in place from noon to well past dark, to take advantage of every bit of available sunlight.

It worked. The plastic controls and jets are no longer yellow. My wife and I agreed pictures don’t completely capture the improvement. You can see the change in the images, but the difference is even more dramatic to the eye than to the camera. So, if you’re sprucing up your house to sell—or if yellowed jets drive you to distraction—give this a try. Some plastic items, like those bathroom vent fan covers, are easy to remove. You can take them outside, coat them with Salon Care and tuck them into a clear plastic bag. The summer sun should make quick work of the yellowing. For those hard-to-remove jets, try a little Salon Care 40 and plastic wrap.
