WHAT IS THE SOLAR SYSTEM? The Solar System is made up of all the planets that orbit our Sun. In addition to planets, the Solar System also consists of moons, comets, asteroids, minor planets, and dust and gas. Everything in the Solar System orbits or revolves around the Sun. The farthest planet is over four billion km away from the earth. Even though they are so far away, all eight of the planets can be seen in the sky, using a telescope - as long as you know where to look! There are two parts to our solar system. The inner solar system contains Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. All four of these planets revolve around the sun. The outer solar system contains Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. The inner planets and the outer planets are separated by the Asteroid Belt.

WHAT IS THE SOLAR SYSTEM? COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS 1. List three important facts you learned about the Solar System.

2.Which planets can be found in the inner solar system?

3.Which planets can be found in the outer solar system?

4.What is the solar system made up of?

MERCURY

Mercury is the planet closest to the sun. It is 57,910,000 km away from the sun. Its orbit around the sun only lasts 88 days. Mercury is a terrestrial planet. This means it has a core surrounded by a mantle and a crust, like Earth. Mercury has no atmosphere, which means that it has nothing to protect it from the sun. It gets very hot on Mercury - the temperature on the sunny side of the planet can reach up to 400 degrees Celsius. The surface of Mercury is covered in craters. These scars have happened over many eons, by accidental encounters with comets and asteroids The orbit of Mercury is not a perfect circle, like most of the other planets. Instead, it is shaped like an egg. This means that Mercury’s orbit sometimes brings it closer to the sun than other times. All other planets have circular orbits, and are always the same distance from the sun.

MERCURY Using the fact sheets provided to help you, write down some key facts about Mercury.
