POINTS of INTEREST
PIQUA was named by the Shawnee Indians. While seated
around a fire following an annual fest, the tribe witnessed a great puffing in the ashes. Suddenly a full formed man sprang up from the remains of the fire and the tribe exclaimed “Otaht-he-wagh-Pe-Qua”, meaning “He has come out of the ashes.” In recognition of Piqua’s outstanding 19th and 20th Century architectural treasures, a 23 block section of the downtown area was entered into the National Register of Historic Places as the “Piqua-Caldwell Historic District.” Various walking tours are available through Main Street Piqua. Piqua’s downtown district experienced a revitalization, which was so successful that it won “The 2003 Governor’s Award for Excellence”. Piqua is the only community in Ohio to receive this honored distinction.
TIPP CITY was originally named Tippecanoe in honor of William Henry Harrison, whose campaign slogan was “Tippecanoe & Tyler Too.” John Clark developed Tippecanoe in 1840 and purposely situated the town to take advantage of the traffic on the Miami Erie Canal. In evidence of this, Tipp Roller Mill is situated at Lock #15 on the canal. The charming downtown district has over 90 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Yost may have designed his masterpiece when invited to Miami County in 1885. Completed in 1888, the courthouse stands as one of the tallest structures in the county, towering 185 feet above the Great Miami River. The tip of the building is fitted with a copper statue of justice with bronze statues in attendance. Inside, the dome is guarded by a number of colorful visages representing cultures from around the world. Frescoed plaster ceilings, arches ornamented with representations of local agricultural produce, marble wainscoting, mosaic tile, and brilliant wood work also make the inside of this structure an architectural treasure.
