HOME IMPROVEMENT TIPS

Fire Prevention Starts with a Plan

Make a Plan Draw a floor plan of your home & find two ways out of every room. Sketch the exit routes clearly on the floor plan. A downloadable escape plan grid can be found on the Energizer Bunny Facebook page. If an upstairs window is one of the escape options, make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground. Make sure every adult knows how to use it. Adults should be responsible for helping younger children. Assign an outside meeting place so if the family escapes from different routes, you can quickly locate each other. Use the following checklist to eliminate as many fire hazards in your home as possible:

Bedrooms In a recent study, almost half (44 percent) of families did not know the peak time for home fire fatalities is when most people are asleep (between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.). So, in addition to making sure you have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors within hearing distance of your bedrooms, take the below steps to fire-proof the bedrooms themselves: • Do$not$trap$electrical$cords$against$walls.$Heat$can$build$up,$posing$a$fire$hazard. • Use$only$lab<approved$electric$blankets$and$warmers.$Make$sure$cords$are$not$worn$or$coming$ apart.$Do$not$leave$electric$blankets$switched$on$all$night$unless$they$are$marked$"suitable$for$all$ night$use." • Keep$bedding,$curtains$and$other$combusDble$items$at$least$three$feet$away$from$space$heaters. • Never$smoke$in$bed. • Replace$maGresses$made$before$the$2007$Federal$MaGress$Flammability$Standard.$By$law,$ maGresses$made$since$then$are$required$to$be$safer. • Have$a$working$smoke$alarm$in$every$bedroom$and$outside$each$sleeping$area. CHANGE YOUR CLOCK CHANGE YOUR BATTERY Daylight saving time ends Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, and marks the 26th anniversary of the "Change Your Clock Change Your Battery" program, created by Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. This program reminds people to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when they change their clocks. Other fire safety prevention measures include: • Test your smoke alarms. Make sure all alarms work by pushing the test buttons. • Clean the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Ensure the sensitivity of your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors by cleaning them each month with a vacuum. • Count Your Smoke Alarms. Be sure there is at least one smoke alarm installed on every level of your home, including one in every bedroom and outside of each sleeping area. • Change Your Flashlight Batteries. Keep flashlights with fresh batteries at your bedside for help in finding the way out and signaling for help in the event of a fire. • Replace your smoke alarms. The IAFC recommends replacing smoke alarms every 10 years and having a combination of both ionization and photo electric smoke alarms to keep you alert to all types of home fires.

Living Room Do not overload electrical outlets. Never run electrical cords under carpets. Check all electrical cords for fraying or other signs of damage. Only light decorative candles when adults are in the room. Use stable candle holders that will not catch fire. Blow candles out when you leave. • During a power failure, do not use candles or oil lamps for light. Keep battery-operated flashlights & lanterns in easily accessible places. Candles used for light in the absence of electrical power cause one-third of fatal home candle fires. • Make sure you have a working smoke alarm in each room, including the living room. • • • •

Kitchen • Cooking is the leading cause of reported home fires and home fire injuries in the United States, according to research by the National Fire Protection Agency. • Never use extension cords to plug in cooking appliances. They can overload the circuit & start a fire. • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove. • Keep anything that can catch fire away from the cooktop. This includes potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, towels and curtains. • Keep the cooktop, burners and oven clean. • Loose clothing can dangle onto stove burners & catch fire. Wear short, close-fitting clothing or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking. • Have a fire extinguisher installed in or near your kitchen, and be sure every adult family member knows how to use it.

Garage • Store all combustible materials away from regular sources of heat, such as water heaters, space heaters, boilers and furnaces. • Keep wood finishes, spray paint, paint thinners & other flammable products in a dedicated storage container with a closed door. • Store all combustible materials in their proper containers & that they are clearly marked. • Keeping the garage tidy can also help keep it safe. Get rid of stacked boxes, newspapers, recycling and trash. They can be instant fuel for a fire. To download your escape grid or getadvertising more information, visit www.facebook.com/energizerbunny. HOME IMPROVEMENT TIPS

A Safe & Spooktacular Halloween

From the candy to the costumes, Halloween is a fun-filled time for kids and parents alike. But it can pose dangers to young revelers. To help make this year's festivity a trick-free treat, follow these simple safety tips:

Adorning Your Little Ghouls • • • •

• • • •

Choose a light-colored costume or add glow-in-the-dark tape to the front and back of the costume so your kids can be easily seen. Don't buy a costume unless it's labeled "flame-retardant." This means the material won't burn. Make sure wigs and beards don't cover your kids' eyes, noses, or mouths. Don't let your children wear masks — they can make it difficult for kids to see and breathe. Instead, use nontoxic face paint or makeup. Have younger children draw pictures of what they want to look like. Older kids will have fun putting the makeup on themselves. Put a name tag — with your phone number — on your children's costumes. Avoid oversized and high-heeled shoes that could cause kids to trip. Avoid long or baggy skirts, pants, or shirtsleeves that could catch on something and cause falls. Make sure that any props your kids carry, such as wands or swords, are flexible.

Trouble-Free Trick-or-Treating •

Accompany young children (under age 10) on their rounds. But make sure they know their home phone number, the cell phone numbers of parents and any other trusted adult who's supervising, and how to call 911 in case they get lost. For older kids who are trick-or-treating on their own, make sure you approve of the route they'll be taking and know when they'll be coming home. Also be sure that they: ◦ carry a cell phone, if possible ◦ go in a group and stay together ◦ only go to houses with porch lights on and walk on sidewalks on lit streets (never walk through alleys or across lawns) Home Improvement Magazine - Page 16

◦ know to never go into strangers' homes or cars ◦ cross the street at crosswalks and never assume that vehicles will stop Give kids flashlights with new batteries. Limit trick-or-treating to your neighborhood and the homes of people you and your children know. When your kids get home, check all treats to make sure they're safely sealed and there are no signs of tampering, such as small pinholes, loose or torn packages, and packages that appear to have been taped or glued back together. Throw out loose candy, spoiled items, and any homemade treats that haven't been made by someone you know. Don't allow young children to have hard candy or gum that could cause choking. Make sure trick-or-treaters will be safe when visiting your home, too. Remove lawn decorations, sprinklers, toys, bicycles, wet leaves, or anything that might obstruct your walkway. Provide a well-lit outside entrance to your home. Keep family pets away from trick-or-treaters, even if they seem harmless to you.

• • •

• •

Gobbling Down Halloween Goodies •

Offer a filling meal before your kids head out to trick-or-treat so they won't scarf down too much of their haul. • Consider purchasing Halloween treats other than candy. Stickers, erasers, crayons, pencils, coloring books, and sealed packages of raisins and dried fruits are good choices. • Know how much candy your kids have collected and store it somewhere other than their bedrooms. Having it so handy can be an irresistible temptation for many kids. Consider being somewhat lenient about candy eating on Halloween, within reason, and talk about how the rest of the candy will be handled. Kids who generally eat just a couple of pieces and save the rest might be trusted to decide how much to eat. But if your child tends to overdo it, consider setting limits. • Once your trick-or-treaters have returned with their Halloween goodies, extend their bounty by letting them have a treat or two a day instead of leaving candy out in big bags or bowls for kids to sample at will. Take these quick and easy precautions to help your little ghosts and goblins have a hauntingly happy and safe Halloween. For advertising opportunities call 941.661.7475 - Page 17

Most of us grew up with our parents telling us to turn of the lights, televisions and computers at the wall - but now it seems they were right! For new research reveals that electrical products plugged in but not in use or left on standby are costing US householders up to 1.3 billion in electricity bills every year. And the ground-breaking study also discovered that we are watching 10 billion hours more TV than previously thought, adding a further 205 million to our electric costs. The study - Powering the Nation - reveals that our relationship with energy, and our level of usage, is actually worse than previously thought. Conducted by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Department of Energy and Climate Change and the Energy Saving Trust, Powering the Nation highlights the day-to-day use of electricity across the nation and allows us to see what is actually happening in people's homes. The study is the first of its kind to measure and monitor electricity in real time in real-life situations, breaking down what electrical items are being used, when, for how long, and how much power they use. The results from the household electricity usage field study which gathered data from 251 monitoring systems in owner-occupied homes, showed that consumers are still getting to grips with minimizing their energy consumption and that more work is required to help homeowners make the right choices. In addition, the report also found that single-person households - 29 per cent of homes - are using as much and sometimes more energy on cooking and laundry as typical families. The report also uncovers a number of surprises, mostly unwelcome ones: We really are a nation of television watchers - not almost five hours a day but an average of more than six hours a day. We love to keep our clothes clean. We run, on average, 5.5 washes a week and if we have a tumble dryer, 81 per cent of our washing is dried in it. We spend more on keeping our crockery, glasses and cutlery clean than we do on our clothes. Anyone with a dishwasher uses on average nearly twice as much electricity as they do for their washing machine. Philip Sellwood, Chief Executive of the Energy Saving Trust, says: It's crucial that households across the nation can make informed decisions by having the right advice to help them reduce their energy usage and fuel bills. HOME IMPROVEMENT TIPS

Enhance The Beauty Of Your Carpet

F

loors and carpets get dirty, sometimes quickly (especially if you have pets and young children) or sometimes gradually over time. Most people believe that vacuuming is enough but it really isn’t... Unfortunately even the most fastidious and regular vacuuming can only remove so much dirt. Inevitably some is left behind to accumulate because it is either deep within the carpet fibers or actually attracted to the fibers, & over time this builds up. In order to maintain your carpet and a healthy environment this soiling needs to be removed regularly. Clean Carpet Looks Great This may seem obvious, but sometimes it’s easy to overlook just how much better clean carpet looks, and what benefits this provides. Clean, attractive carpet speaks well of your business. It creates a more positive experience for your customers. It creates a better working environment for your employees, thus increasing morale and productivity. Overall, it provides your business with a clean, professional look. Our advertisers pride themselves in just how great they can make your carpets look. Clean Carpet Is Healthy Carpet acts as a filter, collecting all of the dust and allergens and that naturally occur in the air. These allergens, if left to accumulate, can and will be reintroduced into air when someone walks on the carpet fibers. Like any filter, eventually it will fill up, and needs to be cleaned out. This is why keeping your carpets clean is so essential. Our advertisers can flush all of the dirt, dust and allergens out of your carpet, providing your home or business with a clean, healthy environment. Clean Carpet Saves You Money If your carpet looks dirty, you’ve already waited too long to get it cleaned. Proper maintenance is essential in preserving the look and extending the life of your carpet. Poorly maintained carpet can quickly show the wear caused by foot traffic. If carpet goes for two years without being cleaned, the appearance level can degrade below 50%, which is unacceptable. After 4 years, it drops to 30%! By getting on a carpet maintenance program, you can greatly extend the life of your carpet. After four years, properly maintained carpet will retain its appearance level above 90%. By maintaining your carpets it will greatly extend its life, thus saving you money down the road. Home Improvement Magazine - Page 28

galatians 5:22-26

God’s Spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, 23 gentle, and selfcontrolled. There is no law against behaving in any of these ways. 24 And because we belong to Christ Jesus, we have killed our selfish feelings and desires. 25 God’s Spirit has given us life, and so we should follow the Spirit. 26 But don’t be conceited or make others jealous by claiming to be better than they are. 22
