his month, I’m obsessed with vibrant and bold designs. I’m not sure if it’s due to the dull and grey Sydney winter we’re experiencing, but bright colours are definitely a love of mine right now. Colour and vibrancy can be important factors in any home or outdoor design, from your wall decor to the plants in your garden. Having colours and inspiring designs surrounding you can improve your mood and overall happiness. We experienced this recently at homeINSPIRE HQ, when we had the talented artist Claudia Pickering paint a bright and abstract mural along our long office wall (which you can see here, along with her other work). As someone attracted to colour and design, I’ve definitely enjoyed the office environment more since. With this effect of colour and bold design in mind, we have a particularly vibrant second

issue. Ensure you check out the pop cultureinfluenced apartment – this interior combines slick contemporary design principles with splashes of iconic imagery. David Bowie and Marilyn Monroe abound in this eclectic design. I also love the feature by our very own Kate St James FDIA, interior designer and managing editor of titles such as Home Design and Grand Designs Australia magazine, which looks at fabulous table decor and coverings. It’s the perfect way to spice up any dining area, whether entertaining or just for the everyday. The Moroccan influence is especially enticing. And for bold outdoor spaces, you can’t go past our feature on Design Lush’s sprawling backyard oasis. Not only does it feature a spectacular infinity-edge pool with a view, but it also incorporates a tantalising firepit and luxurious contemporary furnishings. We also feature to our favourites from the

blogosphere and Pinterest to further your design inspiration, as well as the top picks from completehome.com.au this month. There are some gems in there. So, embrace a vibrant aesthetic and be inspired.

SYDNEY HOME | LAURA JONES, ALEX STANDEN AND MIRRA WHALE

2

The Design Files blog has, once again, shared with us a gorgeous home in this post written by Amber Creswell Bell. The shared residence/workspace of three Sydney artists (Laura Jones, Alex Standen and Mirra Whale), this interior embodies a beautiful and eclectic nature. Naturally, artworks adorn most of the walls, with life studies, portraits and abstract features punctuating each room. Handmade ceramics by resident Alex are dotted throughout most rooms. I love the use of indoor plants, bringing life and air into each space. What’s even more special about this place is that the group is in fact renting it — through a relationship with the landlord, they are able to gain permission to revamp and renovate to their whims. It’s a bit of Gen Y genius, given the housing situation in Sydney. This is a truly multilayered and artistic home, where each element has been lovingly crafted and cared for.

Brought to you by The Design Hunter, this beautiful, contemporary transformation is the product of a recent renovation. This Glebe residence began as a traditional terraced townhouse, like so many historic homes in Sydney, and is now a fusion of traditional and modern styles. A neutral colour palette has been embraced in the interiors, with a focus on quality polished timber flooring and clean lines throughout. With little space available, the designer has successfully integrated a cosy yet chic outdoor are, which opens out from the interior. I love the minimalist design of the staircase squeezed into the hallway. With a command over space and style, this home is an absolute treat.

HOUSE TOUR, ALEYSHA’S ADELAIDE MID-CENTURY HOME

Recycled Interiors is a company and blog by Helen Edwards, focused on creating happy and healthy homes through eclectic means. This week, Helen takes a peek at a local Adelaide home, where artistic additions to an older-style space are used to beautiful effect. The classic, mid-century structure of the building make it a great canvas for creating a unique interior that reflects the resident’s personality. And that sense of personality certainly shines through. Vintage furniture, unique materials, contemporary decor items and plenty of indoor plants all contribute to the home’s sense of balance and fun.I especially love the copper fireplace in the living area, the perfect metallic touch. CABINET

Interior design studio Arent&Pyke’s blog, In/Out Design, explores interesting interiors and showcases the studio’s own designs through a clean medium. This particular post focuses specifically on Danish design studio Cabinet and its recent collection of homewares and furniture. The use of colour and geometric patterns in this range is what really makes it stand out. I especially love the cute little side table, which mixes clear sheets of glass shelving, classic white lines and bright colours with impeccable balance. A great little feature piece, this side table could fit easily into any contemporary interior. READ MORE HERE

THE TINY PROJECT

The Design Blog looks at a variety of designs, from homes to industrial and commercial projects. This post showcases the Tiny Project by Alek Lisefski, which is a quaint and simple, small home. Built on a trailer, the dwelling is especially suited to a nomadic lifestyle, especially to those who are able to pack their entire lives into one room. The design is reminiscent of a child’s cubby house, featuring a ladder to the loft bedroom, plenty of natural timber and an efficient use of all available space. This home represents a way forward for the minimalist and eco-focused among us. READ MORE HERE

nspired by Indonesia’s villas and mountains, and with an emphasis on sustainability, this home is oriental in style. With clean lines and a clear delineation between inside and out, the design and sensibility of this beautiful home is unique. The clients established their brief early in the project and worked with architect Kiril Manolev from its inception. A semi-retired couple, with one adult son still living with them, the clients were looking for a family home for the new stage of their lives. A key element of the initial brief was for the home to be designed in line with the expectations of local authorities and neighbours to avoid a lengthy and costly approvals process through council. The other element was purchasing the right property for the design the clients had in mind. Kiril was invited to visit the property before it was purchased to judge its suitability and was impressed, especially by the “dramatic backdrop of the endless deep-green subtropical foliage. The unusually wide site with slight slope from the street further contributed to the dramatic rear view of the landscaping beyond. My recommendation to my clients was that this was the ideal site for the house they were looking to live in. HOMEINSPIRE

Genius trick glazed glass in large living areas helps insulate the home in winter and keeps it cool in summer

14 | HOMEINSPIRE

The ground floor can easily become an alfresco entertaining space with the folding glass windows

The property was in fact so appropriate for the design that it was developed even further and was influenced by the setting itself. The proximity of neighbouring properties meant different considerations had to be taken into account. “To address privacy concerns for neighbouring properties, the first-floor bedrooms could only be oriented to face the street or the rear yard,” explains Kiril. “Side-facing windows had to be for non-habitable rooms and made of translucent glass.” These constraints were especially important in the design to aid the quick approvals process. The entrance of the home is breathtaking. Stepping through the large door, you’re immediately greeted with the two-storey atrium and a fully glazed glass skylight. Light pours in from every angle and highlights the simple elegance of the interior. This area leads to the kitchen and dining room at the back of the house. With the use of

folding doors, the kitchen, dining and family room can easily become one large space. The ground floor is designed specifically for minimal temperature regulation due to the glazed void over the living space, explains Kiril. “It allows for the northern sun to penetrate deep into the house during the day, eliminating the need for daytime heating in winter. The air conditioning is hardly ever used in summer as the hot air is released through the windows located at the top of the glazed void areas.” The kitchen is simply designed with minimal clutter. The customhoned Oyster Caesarstone island benchtop is particularly effective. The adjoining dining room continues this theme of simplicity, with a glass table and a gorgeous Spiro suspension lamp by LZF. Creating a honeycomb-like effect, this light enhances the dining room and HOMEINSPIRE

Clean and simple, the kitchen provides room for cooking, working and entertaining

The white and stone theme is carried throughout the house to the bathroom

The use of clean lines, modern planting and effective lighting have created a beautiful modern home in the heart of Sydney leads the eye to the upper levels, which intersect with the ground level throughout. The family room is divided from the dining room by a veneered feature wall, which includes a two-sided fireplace. This feature allows occupants of either room to enjoy the heat’s warmth, while the room’s floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the outdoor and pool areas. Across these three interconnected living areas is a continuous line of folding glass doors. These are easily moved, opening the entire rear of the home to the outdoor entertaining area and pool. The pool itself is a design marvel, its black tiles and infinity edge are attentiongrabbing to say the least. Shrouded with palms and overhanging greenery, the pool is reminiscent of a tropical retreat. This home has achieved a balance of styles and ideas, evoking a traditional Balinese villa and boasting sustainable qualities and clean lines. The end result is a testament to a perfect interpretation of contemporary design.

his decadent design began life as a mere shell of what you see here. Neutrals swept through the home like a sandstorm against a backdrop of desert. Not a touch of vivid colour graced the walls, floor or ceiling. This didn’t bode well for the occupants; a young, professional couple with two small children. After all, if you’re a lover of modern art and the colour it brings, neutrals simply won’t cut it. “The house was all beige and brown,” explains Greg Natale, the designer of this revamp. “They initially wanted everything

in black and white, but one of the homeowners is a great collector of art and so the brief became to re-colour the home around the artwork he had collected.” The range of this artwork is broad. Dotted around the home are pieces by talented popular artists including the infamous street artist Banksy. A graffiti theme flows through the collection, which would have been a bit of a challenge to match with Greg’s signature suave interiors. “It was,” says Greg. “Making everything tie-in was hard. The idea was to draw the colour out of the artwork and develop an interior style that matched.”

The elegant hand-painted wallpaper from Fromental is an artwork in itself

26 | HOMEINSPIRE

Lilac domination in the master bedroom, which is feminine and classic and quite different from the rest of the home This, of course, was not as easy as it sounds. For starters, each of the artworks is different. Some pieces, such as the David Bowie picture by Mr Brainwash, feature pinks and gold, while the Marilyn Monroe piece is purely monochromatic. Not only this, the homeowners have very different tastes. The man of the house (who most of the popart pieces belong to) loves the contemporary look, whereas the lady of the manor prefers a much more classical look. V So how do you tackle a project that not only has to incorporate a variety of colours, but also needs to respect the differing preferences of the occupants? Greg’s answer was to simply project the variance in artwork

and tastes directly onto the interior. Rather than create a space that matches throughout, he created separate areas that are completely different from each other. This proffers more conundrums though, because Greg then had to tie each of the spaces together while simultaneously respecting their vast differences. “This was difficult,” Greg says, “but we always came back to the artwork and this directed the styles.” The formal living room is probably the most eccentric space. The image of David Bowie takes prime position on the back wall, bedecked in an elaborate gold frame, and leads the colour palette for the rest of the room.

A tufted gold Chester Moon lounge by Baxter, a Jules coffee table (also from Baxter) and a Tracery rug by well-established designer Kelly Wearstler contrast with the modern nature of the artwork by adding a vintage aspect. Adorning the ceiling is a busy chevron wallpaper in gold. It is part of Greg’s new range, which he has designed in collaboration with Porter’s Paints. It connects the living space to the dining room and adds a bit of eye-lifting intrigue to the room. In the dining room, the use of pink is arresting. There are two very different artworks; one by controversial British artist Damien Hirst and the other by local Australian sculptor Dion Horstman. Both

Monochromatic features spread from the relaxed living room to the guest bedroom where Emilio carpet from Designer Rugs provides a beautiful meeting point of colours

DESIGN DETAILS  Greg Natale Design has given this home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs a refreshing interior makeover  Previously, the home featured neutrals only and as the occupants are great lovers of art, they wanted to add some colour  Greg Natale Design utilised artworks already collected by the family as inspiration within the home  Three main styles are showcased: pop-art inspired, minimal monochrome and classical feminine  Tying the styles and spaces together was a challenge. However, Greg Natale Design fused everything by choosing details in the art and using them in the interior design

have pink in volumes and — along with the hot pink found in the David Bowie image — they’ve inspired the inclusion of pink in the furniture. Gold is still the leading colour but, with the addition of Wingback chairs by Tom Dixon, it is certainly given a run for its money. Move into the more casual living spaces and the variation in styles really becomes apparent. The contrast to the vivid pop-art style that we’ve just seen is huge. Now we are greeted by an incredibly minimal and V monochromatic environment. Gone is the pink, replaced by white, grey and chrome. The space is defined by Andy Warhol’s iconic image Marilyn Monroe, printed in black and white. This isn’t the only black-and-white area of the home. The guest bedroom — once again led by its artwork — is also entirely bedecked in monochromatic shades. High ceilings and flowing white curtains make for an elegant space that is brought back to earth by the blacks found in the bed linen and furnishings. Greg has chosen to use dark, patterned Emilio carpet from Designer Rugs, a bold move given that it flows through not just one bedroom, but all four. It does, however, complement each space beautifully, creating a meeting point between black and white in the guest bedroom and providing a grounding contrast to the lilac in the master and daughter’s bedroom. The lilac, of course, deserves mention. It is the feminine touch that really rounds off the diversity within the house. The master bedroom and the daughter’s room carry a decidedly classical look compared to the rest of the rooms, contrasting with both the pop-art and monochromatic looks we’ve already seen. While artwork is absent from the master bedroom, Greg has given the room an artistic touch by using hand-painted lavender wallpaper from Fromental. It dashes across the back wall in a wave of lilac, leading the colours in the rest of the room. The varying spaces come together beautifully within this home. Who would have thought that three so very different styles could flow into one another and tie together so seamlessly? To be so inspired by artwork is nothing new, but to allow the pieces to be integral to the interior design — so much so that each area becomes an artwork itself — is, however, extraordinary. It’s almost as though the home has become its own evolving art gallery, created by art, led by colour and orchestrated with interior design.

f Cinderella’s living room was renovated, I imagine it might look something similar to this new conservatory. The room has a “modern fairytale” feel to it. Maybe it’s the floating chandelier dripping with timber beads or the woodland touches. Maybe it’s the turquoise pool lapping outside like a moat or the walls of glass and dovecote-style roof, which creates a blanket of sky above. (Surely if the princess delights in glass

footwear, she would love it in her decor too?) Whatever the magic touch, it’s hard to find a flaw in this wonderful and fresh living room. For the homeowners, this living space did not simply materialise with the help of a fairy godmother. Rather, it was the help and inspiration of Acorn Garden Houses and interior decorator Amanda Magliano that transformed a mossy slab of concrete into this chic conservatory.

“The client’s brief was to make a space that could be used in winter and summer,” explains Steve from Acorn Garden Houses. With the house situated near Mount Martha Beach on the Mornington Peninsula, the couple also wanted a room “that not only looked up to the sky, but towards the bay views”. The extensive use of double glazing with ComfortPlus glass fulfilled these goals. It allowed the room to seasonally regulate its temperature, preventing the soft furnishings from fading, and also open up to stunning 360° views. “Inspiration came from overseas magazines and watching UK home shows,” Steve says. “Lots of houses overseas seemed to have these beautiful buildings attached to them, enhancing the outdoors all year-round.” The finished project stretches 6x6m and, while big and bold in stature, it is sensitive to the existing architecture and design of the home. Classic French doors open out to the pool and dining area, creating unity with the other living areas and allowing sunlight to stream into the rooms behind. The installation of a servery with bifold windows also allows easy serving from the kitchen, “essential for passing out those teas, coffees or a glass of wine!” adds Steve. It’s a design that cleverly weaves fine detailing with family features, a must considering the family has three children and a mischievous puppy. The ashlar limestone flooring creates an organic and neutral base to the room while also being “very user-friendly regarding traffic in and out of the pool area”. The window seats carve out a cosy reading nook while doubling as storage space, and the beautiful Jacobean lounge suite provides ample room for guests while showcasing rich carvings and antique craftsmanship. Other quality and eclectic pieces such as the solid-granite fireplace, the collection of Art Deco-etched ship mirrors and old books with original bindings further imbue this room with rustic warmth and charm. Overall, the conservatory is “a mix of old and new, a space to feel comfortable and lived in,” says Amanda. “It has created the most loved room in the home, bringing back the art of conversation.”

Soft-close drawers provide plenty of storage space in this stylish old-world kitchen “A stylish blast from the past, this retro kitchen is full of personality. The client asked for a modern take on the retro kitchen, something cool and funky to complement the house and the area. The Mynt Interiors in-house design team worked closely with the client to design this delightful space. Cosy shades of duck-egg blue and cream set the tone for this sunny space, their pastel hues balanced by the crisp-white Corian benchtop. A bank of rippled-glass-doored cupboards stands centre stage, reminiscent of a classic oversized storage unit. Offering ample room for groceries and crockery, they also feature vintage-inspired chrome handles imported from the United States. Small details such as the rounded corner shelves under the bench stir memories of grandma’s kitchen, while the freestanding oven range warms this modern room with echoes of the past. Underneath the retro looks are the best of modern appliances and fittings. The fridge-freezer is concealed behind retro-chic timber-veneer doors, and cabinets

feature soft-close drawer runners. Bright-green appliances add the final touch of vintage charm. In every way, this kitchen masters a mix of old and new to create a stylish and inviting space.”

Reclaimed blackbutt timber creates a gorgeous effect, paired with red brick flooring

A winning combination of traditional, natural materials and modern industrial sensibilities “The charm of this design is that it brings earthy natural tones together through the red-brick floors, reclaimed blackbutt timber and polished concrete benchtops. The materials and finishes create a space that is refreshing and in keeping with the period of the cottage. Yet at the same time it feels contemporary with a touch of the industrial in features such as the exposed timber beams, subwaytiled splashback and open shelving within the island bench. One of the key design considerations was working with the exposed timber beam in the middle of the room. We also cut down the existing floor-to-ceiling wall above the benchtop to open up the kitchen to the living area, while still maintaining a concealed cooking nook. Tall cabinets that house the large fridge are kept to one corner of the room so as not to overcrowd the space, and the microwave is also concealed. Designer: Nathan Wundersitz for Space Craft Joinery

design movement meets practicality

We love the two-pack-painted art panel with feature oxide, created in the workshop with the help of the client to produce the desired pattern.

“Our clients were looking for a kitchen with a difference, combined with the request for a large family kitchen, which would be the hub of their home. However, they didn’t have a big budget to work with. Their needs were a concealed desk (which was placed behind bifold doors) and a large pantry to suit the family who enjoy cooking with herbs, spices and condiments. A blackboard for notices was also on the wishlist, together with bookcases, open shelves, an appliance cabinet, a toaster and kettle niche near the sink, plus lots of drawers to house their many cooking utensils. The design was created to allow movement. The island features a recycled timber top and matching slatted shelves at one end. This had to be built around a steel post so we incorporated steel legs on the island and had the steel finished in an oxide rust finish. A raised recycled

timber servery was also used behind the sink to give movement in height and diffuse the sink work area from the alfresco space. Below this raised top, we created a two-pack-painted art panel with feature oxide, created in the workshop with the client assisting to create the desired pattern. Other features include inserting a round porthole-style window facing into the home office. This window had to be placed to allow the glass splashback to follow the curve of the window, yet still align to the servery. To add to the design

We love the dramatic mosaic tile splashback and the way it brings the kitchen’s colour palette together.

The glimmering splashback is paired perfectly with metallic kitchen accessories “The owners wanted a Shaker-style modern kitchen with a butler’s pantry and new laundry. I love the feature tiles, two-tone cabinetry and Corian benchtops. We had to change the existing laundry into the new butler’s pantry and the bathroom was made into the laundry. This is an entertainer’s kitchen. It’s very functional, with a large island bench and plenty of preparation space. There is a luxury of space in this ensuite

Expert Tip Unique tapware makes for a small yet interesting design element. “This elegant and spacious ensuite is the pinnacle of private luxury. The owners wanted a modern, relaxing retreat with a classic twist, accommodating for the existing traditional French doors leading to a courtyard. The freestanding stone bath with its modern, sculptured tapware complements the beautiful grey heated ceramic floor tiles. A large double shower behind the bathtub is spacious and boasts a stunning granite tile feature wall. The double towel rails are heated for that little bit of extra luxury. The custom-made classic double vanity with stone basin and large double mirror provides lots of practical storage. Elegant French windows allow natural light to fill the space with a relaxing glow. This bathroom is a stylish mix of modern luxury and

classic simplicity that blends together to create the ultimate private haven.

heritage dream

We love the colour co-ordinated vanity and feature tiled wall.

“This luxurious bathroom was designed to suit a large family. As befits a rambling bluestone homestead, the original bathroom was very spacious. The ceiling is more than 3.5m high so the underfloor heating helps to keep the room warm. Our brief was to design a grand and unconventional bathroom that wasn’t stark white. The Apaiser Seed Pearl bath and basins are perfect for this. Their mother-of-pearl finish sparkles in the light. We selected the door height as the starting point for the wall tiles and vanity mirror. The scale of the bathroom also allowed us to insert a T-shaped wall which conceals the shower at one end and the WC at the other end. This created the opportunity for a feature wall with an illuminated niche as the backdrop for the free-standing bath. Semi-polished matching floor and wall tiles accentuate the sense of space and give the bathroom a luminous quality.” Designer: Renette Burne for Bathrooms & Kitchens by Urban FOR MORE INFORMATION

french style, moroccan flavour

Handmade tiling can create a perfect bathroom feature “Beautiful handmade encaustic tiles infuse a Moroccan flavour into this classic bathroom. The tiles are handmade individually using cement, marble powder and natural pigments with an artisan manufacturing process that hasn’t changed for more than 150 years, since the Moors. In addition to the fabulous colours they bring to a space, cement tiles are extremely durable, easy to clean and naturally insulating, helping to keep surfaces cool in the summer and warm in the winter. In this bathroom, the striking tiles are perfectly balanced by the understated surroundings. The floral pattern works in harmony with the free-standing bath and vanity to create an elegant French Provincial feel, while the rhythmic repetition of blue and white imbues a subtle exotic flavour. Encaustic tiles are now widely available from Eco Tile Factory in a rainbow of colours and patterns for bathroom designers and renovators.” Distributor: Eco Tile Factory FOR MORE INFORMATION ecotilefactory.com.au

ith limited space in their backyard, the owners of this property wanted to make it feel larger, with different areas to escape to for both entertaining and relaxation. Before the transformation, landscape designer Matt Leacy, director of Landart Landscapes and Pools, was confronted with a completely flat, paved space that could best be described as harsh and uninviting.

74 | HOMEINSPIRE

“Because it was very flat, once you arrived at the back door the entire space was revealed and there was no reason to go beyond the door,” says Matt. “I wanted to create a softer, more intriguing and organic area that invited you outside.” The resulting outdoor space that he and his company created is structured in a sense, but also very relaxed and casual — a contemporary space with hints of Asian inspiration. “A lot has been achieved in a very small area,” says Matt. “There are distinct rooms that feel very separate to each other,

but also very connected.” A sunken seating spot was added to provide more intimacy. “This also helped to make the space seem larger as it feels like a completely different room to the dining and kitchen area, while still giving a sense of being connected to the other spaces,” says Matt. “When you are sitting there it really does feel like a room even though it is completely open. The sunken lounge is so inviting it draws you out into the garden. It’s difficult not to collapse in there with a drink every time you enter the space!”

A fully equipped outdoor kitchen is perfect for entertaining.

The mosaic-tiled lap pool boasts an exquisite timber water feature, while the wall is clad with natural granite. A mosaic-tiled lap pool with an exquisite timber water feature was positioned alongside the light-filled dining area and kitchen, with easy access to the outdoor spaces via doors, which seem to disappear completely, enhancing the seamless indoor/outdoor connection. When it came to stone and paving selection for the project, one of the numerous masonry walls was clad with natural granite stone shaped on site, and consistent blond travertine paving was laid around the perimeter of the pool. Slender weaver bamboo was the dominant plant of choice. “This was chosen because the garden beds are quite small and we needed to screen off the neighbour’s two storeys quickly — bamboo was about the only thing that would achieve all of the criteria the clients required,” says Matt. “Plus, it suits the space perfectly. Although we are in a suburban backyard, it feels like you could be in a day spa just about anywhere. It provides real escapism.”

We love the combination of contemporary outdoor living with the harsh desert backdrop Written by April Ossington Photography by Bill Timmerman and Zack Hussain

hen most people think of Las Vegas, they think of glaring neon lights and bustling crowds. But away from the Strip, a young family of three has carved out the ultimate haven. Here, a far different sensual experience is achieved, a sense of slowness, peace and tranquility, far removed from the intensity of America’s party hotspot. Designed by assemblageSTUDIO and DESIGNLUSH, and using custom furniture from DESIGNLUSH, the outdoor areas focus on the “sensual experience of place” where tactile engagements with materials are encouraged and spaces in between are just as important as the structures themselves.

78 | HOMEINSPIRE

Abstract statues play a huge role in this design

At the front of the home, the specially designed DESIGNLUSH Pantera bench mimics the natural environment, and the landscape is sectioned off into specific areas, both defining the space and leading into the outdoor living room. Overlooking the Nevada desert, that is both unforgiving with its scorching summer temperatures and uniquely serene, this artfully conceived space becomes the first encounter with the outdoor area. It features intriguing metal sculptures that are hybrids of human and animal and an inviting swing chair suspended from the roof. “The space awakens the senses through fire, landscape, water and art,” says Eric Strain from assemblageSTUDIO. Protected from the extremes of the natural environment, the area includes both a sizeable fan and unobtrusive fire trough so the space can be enjoyed all year. Created with entertaining in mind, the

pool and cabana area is the most public of the spaces, featuring cooking and dining facilities as well as a lounge area. The infinity-edge pool was chosen to reflect the natural environment in the space. Gently curving into the shallow water, the Infinity Pool Wave loungers from DESIGNLUSH are the ultimate in relaxation. Constructed of cast fibreglass, the chairs allow the natural contour of the body to conform seamlessly to its surroundings. Eric says the space is not determined by the enclosure, but through a new idea of space that extends past perceived barriers into an expanded form of living. Perhaps the best example of this is the media and guest bedrooms, which are extended through full-height glazing into the courtyard. The glass walls of the media room can be opened completely, bringing the outside in. ”Even in this harsh environment, one is able to enjoy

A unique flavour is achieved through elements like fire features, metal statues and unusual furniture this concept through the development of exterior courts, which are designed to shade and protect — reminiscent of the crevices found in our rock formations where one often finds oases of life,” Eric says. Described as “the peak of the home”, the roof deck is the family’s favourite outdoor area. With a 180-degree view of the Red Rock Mountains and Las Vegas Strip, it’s the perfect place for the family to escape in privacy. Designed for more intimate entertaining, the space features a bar, seating area and firepit, with the most notable feature, the “metal garden,” featuring cacti sculptured in steel.

With a focus on the unity of each space, Eric maintains he doesn’t have a favourite. “It’s not about one space. It’s the interwoven experiences you encounter throughout — from the wonder you achieve at first encountering the mesh surround, to the roof deck where your view stretches from the natural beauty of the Red Rocks to the lights of the Vegas Strip.”

he allure of a tropical-style garden is undeniable: the richly coloured foliage, the dense, layered planting and the highly evocative mix of natural textures and materials. Add to this a layout designed to promote the flow of life-enhancing chi (positive energy) and you have a winning formula. The goal of the designer Ken Saunders of Kenchi Lifestyle Gardens was two-fold. Firstly, he wanted to create an interesting entrance to the property. Secondly, he wanted the garden to have a peaceful feel and flow easily from one space to the next. Not wanting to reveal everything at once,

We love the way the design creates beautiful symmetry and style through a mix of planting and human design the multi-level design is protected from the street by tall murraya hedging, which creates a privacy wall of green and acts as a backdrop for the tropical planting. Giving privacy from the neighours, a long line of slender weaver’s bamboo grows along the side of the entry garden. As soon as you set foot inside the garden you quickly see that the plants are the stars of the show. A rare, multi-branched dragon’s blood tree and a ponytail palm with its distinctive swollen trunk (designed for storing water) are the feature specimens. Like all the other tropical-style plants, including the agaves planted at the base of the ponytail palm, the cordylines and bromeliads, the

feature trees were selected for their striking form and water-wise qualities. Visitors to the property are greeted by a portico featuring 140mm laminated kwila posts that give the structure a solid feel and clearly define the garden’s entry. From the solid-roofed portico, a series of cleanlined timber platforms lead into the garden through the abundant planting and past a water feature to the house. Ken chose merbau timber for the multilevel, boardwalk-style path as it is a longlasting, durable hardwood. LED deck lighting was flush-mounted along the outer edges of the timber platforms, making the garden easy to traverse at night.

Although this garden has a relaxed look, its construction brought certain challenges. As the block slopes, the site has to be retained and back-filled to create level, workable spaces but all that effort has paid dividends. A well-designed garden is a lifestyle investment. Put simply, the more aesthetically appealing it is, the more frequently it will be used. It’s also an investment in a property’s resale value.

A stunning outdoor room, picture perfect for entertaining Written by Tessa Hoult Photography by Stephanie Bradford

R

ising above its lush green surrounds and overlooking the idyllic blue waters of the swimming pool, this award-winning summer house is the epitome of outdoor living. A room for all occasions, this spectacular ode to design is duly suited to making the most of the unpredictable Victorian weather all year round. Built by Sceam Construction, the room is situated between the house and pool area on a large acre block in Melbourne and won the 2013 HIA Victorian Outdoor Project Award. Breathtaking upon first look, the use of retractable floor-to-ceiling glass panes, dramatic in their own right, is capped off with a rich and warm American oak ceiling design. “The ceiling is really impressive,” says

86 | HOMEINSPIRE

Sceam Construction’s Matthew Allen. “It’s an extraordinary amount of work. The carpenter who put it together is very good and he custom made every single clip.” However, it’s not until you venture into the space that the quality of design and craftsmanship reveals its true self. Your eye is automatically drawn to the central fireplace but with just a slight turn of the head, your gaze will fall upon the intricate details of the ceiling. A central feature with a beautifully appointed pendant light, the use of two 8m-long skylights fills the room with natural sunlight that bounces off the polished concrete floors and turns the space into a cosy retreat. With every inch of the room filled with detail and sophisticated aspects, it is easy to look past one of the true standouts: a 9m-long cantilevered bench that runs out through the glass windows and onto the paved barbecue area

beyond. Described by Matthew as “extraordinary engineering”, the bench is constructed from bluestone and acts like a spine, not only connecting the various areas of this vast outdoor space together, but also giving it a sense of life. Covered by a retractable outdoor awning, the paved barbecue area leads onto an expansive ironbark deck that overlooks the pool and lawn. “Ironbark is the best timber you can use … it has that nice grey colour,” says Matthew. “It will fade and look like an old pier, but you can also bring it back to life with oil.” Although the space is filled with an abundance of high-tech features, it’s the combination of material selection and quality engineering that sets it apart from other outdoor rooms. Be it the soft and understated lighting, superior stonework or the outstanding carpentry, the whole space oozes eminence and excellence.

The interior of the outdoor room is relaxed, with style features from outdoors seeping in, creating a seamless space “This one building took six months just for the engineering and the structural side,” says Matthew. “It’s actually sitting off the ground and it had to be backfilled, but it’s unique in that it is a fully customised building that suits its purpose.”

the high life Built on an extremely steep and rocky site, this pool is a design triumph, maximising both a limited space and elevated views

The benefit of building a pool on such a steep block is immediately seen in the gorgeous views

94 | HOMEINSPIRE

L

The upstairs balcony is the perfect space to barbecue dinner and enjoy the view of the new landscape and pool below

iving on an extremely steep block, the owners of this home initially thought a pool was out of the question — until they saw potential in the elevated area of their front yard. Urban Escape was presented with the challenging task of creating a raised pool that would not only be visually discreet and appealing from the street below, but aesthetically striking from the home. This contemporary pool does just that. Its unique shape moulds with the home and the terrain in a curved fashion, allowing swimmers to make the most of their bird’s-eye view of the street below. The pool has been designed so that swimmers remain hidden to the onlooker, but still have the option of peering over the edge at any time. Given the lack of space, a small but versatile paved area surrounds the pool, providing an area for bathers to lounge and relax. A second tier of outdoor living space is located above the pool on another level of the home. This upper level is equipped with a barbecue and outdoor setting, enabling the homeowners to

entertain their guests and use the pool on both levels simultaneously. Building this pool was a welcome challenge for Urban Escape, which organised rock excavation, underpinning of the house and pool peering. In addition to this, due to the pool’s unconventional position, all services to the house needed to be redirected and machinery and materials craned in. Urban Escape was also responsible for the landscaping of this raised oasis. Using golden cane palms, agave and gymea lilies, the area has been transformed with foliage and colour. Smaller plants such as chalk sticks, rhaphiolepsis and lomandras were used to blend areas and frangipanis were planted beyond the pool edge for their height and beautiful scent. In time the frangipanis will grow, creating a beautiful visual from the poolside areas and will drop the occasional flower into the pool, creating a resort-style feel. Mood lighting has been used effectively to not only create a romantic outdoor ambience, but to also highlight the pool, sandstone steps

and the trees. This project is a true example of how employing one company to organise and construct both the pool and landscaping can make a challenging project flow smoothly and result in a flawlessly finished product.

ot only did Design Pools successfully create this pool and outdoor living area, the company also undertook the complete home renovation. The result is a project that clearly demonstrates Design Pools’ devotion to the construction of high-quality pools and landscapes that cater to clients’ everyday needs. By incorporating an alfresco into the design, the company maximised room for the pool and provided shade around the dining area to ensure the space can be used all year round. The elevated alfresco features an outdoor kitchen complete with barbecue, sink and drinks fridge. The alfresco offers an unimpeded view of the pool, allowing adults to supervise children, while at the same time, providing a perfect outlook of the entire yard. Glass fencing surrounding the pool not only fulfils safety requirements, but also enhances the uninterrupted vista. Completing the impressive aesthetic, travertine paving was laid throughout the alfresco and around the pool.
