shade.
Co-founders
Les
Mandelbaum and Paul Rowan recognized that there was a need to create modern designs that would be accessible in both price and attitude. Based in Toronto, Canada, Umbra (Latin for “shade), has become a global leader in product design and currently distributes in over 120 countries across the world with offices in Europe, Canada, the United States, Brazil, and China. Umbra was born out of passion for original design and the desire to create products for every home. At Umbra, our team of international designers brings thought and creativity into everyday items. Driven by innovation, we pull inspiration from the global marketplace, in order to push boundaries in our approach to original design.

MATT CARR VP Design Umbra
Matt Carr is VP Design at Umbra. Matt Carr was born in the Canadian Ottawa. His passion for design came when he was an apprentice at Douglas Cardinal Architects in his hometown. Later, Carr visited the “Humber College School of Industrial Design in Toronto. Already during his studies, the Canadian reaped some benefits for his academic skills. He soon started to work for Umbra. Carr was the key factor in reinventing the brand with the launch of Umbra Shift, a capsule offshoot of Umbra featuring functional and visionary designs from various established and up-andcoming designers. An integral part of the Umbra design team since 2001, Matt has contributed countless designs to their product line. His work has been featured multiple times in The New York Times, The Daily Telegraph, Surface Magazine, I.D Magazine, Met Home, Monocle, and Living Etc. During the final phase of development of Umbra Shift, he traveled to a multitude of countries that left him inspired.

DESIGNED BY Modern. Subtle. Different
MATT CARR Hub ladder rack, little black dress jewelry organizer, flip 5 hook are the iconic products designed by Matt Carr. There have been hundreds of designs over the years but Matt’s most proud of the Posting Mailbox, it’s one of his first designs at Umbra and is still selling well. It’s quite rare to see a product stay in production for almost two decades. The Posting represents Umbra’s brand values of being modern, original, casual, affordable and functional. It's a very meaningful product to him because people are buying this object to create a personality for their home which is a big investment and an important part of their life. From the Umbra Shift collection, the Nest Caddy is one of his favorites as he has been using it since he received the first prototype. He like how it can be used in so many different ways. Its intent is to hold tablets phones but won’t become obsolete once they are using something completely different in 5 years.
