& FUNCTON Matter RENOVATION TIPS Think Outside the Box When it comes to granite, marble, and engineered stone countertops in the Omaha market, the place to visit is Premier Countertops and Premier Kitchen + Bath. Serving the industry since 1976, Premier has helped over 20,000 clients and counting. Home • Life • Style asked owners Mory & Lori, who have over 30 years in the countertop and renovation business, to share what this business has taught them about planning a successful kitchen or bath remodel. Lori, who is known for her meticulous eye for quality, attention to detail, and personalized approach, shared her perspectives on renovation fundamentals: “The best projects are those that have been done by full service design and build companies. To be a good designer, you need logistical expertise in order to understand exactly what it takes to make the design happen at the time of installation so there will be absolutely no surprises. The craftsmen need design experience to see the design elements as intended from the designer’s perspective. Premier Countertops employs design-oriented, knowledgeable, and value-driven problem solvers who love to walk into a home and assess the strengths and opportunities and get a kick out of taking a scalpel to renovation planning versus a chainsaw. Sometimes the right value equation is to gut and re-do the space, and sometimes the right answer is simpler: add a new backsplash, sink, appliances, stone countertops, and well placed cabinet embellishments while employing lighting tricks. Great answers come from people who understand the home’s value today and the potential value after renovation.

“Custom finishes improve the look and value of a home. The old adage about selecting vanilla components for the major elements of your home to protect resale value is simply false. Buyers today demand custom, tasteful, and timeless designs. Memorable homes hold value, and spot-on material choices coupled with excellent craftsmanship are key. That’s why Premier Countertops’ product offerings include lead role and supporting role choices in countertops, cabinetry, tile, wood flooring, carpet and more with the most up-to-date materials, color ranges, textures, and price points. 5 TIPS for
Hiring a Landscape Contractor
Hiring a landscape contractor is a big decision and one that can reap great rewards both cosmetically and financially for your home or business. There are a lot of landscape companies in the Greater Omaha area, so how do you pick the right one? Below are five tips for you to consider.
1
Research your options. Ask friends, relatives, neighbors, and material suppliers for recommendations. The flashy flyers landscaping companies use to advertise are designed to get your attention, but you’ll likely be better off talking with someone who worked with a contractor and was satisfied through the entire process from the first call to final payment. Set up initial meetings with at least 3-4 companies to best weigh your options.
2
Do your homework. Landscape contractors try to be as efficient as possible with your time and their own. As a potential client you should do the same. If you have a specific deadline such as a graduation, wedding, or other event, the first meeting is a good time to see if the timeline can be met. Consider also asking these types of questions: Are you licensed? Are you insured? Does your company do the types of projects I am interested in?
3
Gather ideas. It is best to have some ideas and examples when you meet with potential contractors. Talk with your significant other or other decision makers to make sure you are on the same page as far as what you would like to see in the completed project. Pull pictures of magazines or take pictures of homes you’ve seen. The more information you give to the contractor, the more they will be able to help you. Look at different colors and textures. Also think about what you don’t like because that is just as useful to the contractor.
4 Discuss
meeting.
important details at the first
It’s typically helpful to get 2-3 estimates unless you have a working relationship with a contractor. Any more than 3 estimates is probably a waste of everyone’s time. Discuss your notes, examples, budget, and timeline constraints in the first meeting. Your contractor should be able to estimate ballpark pricing and

help to establish your budget for the job. The contractor typically will make suggestions about how to best use your budget and get the most per dollar spent out of the finished product. If you’re interested in doing the project in phases over a few years, ask if that’s a possibility. The contractor should be able to design a project to fit with your schedule and budget at each phase. Here are other good questions to ask the contractor: How long will this project take? Do you have the right equipment and manpower to handle this type of project? What can I expect during the construction process? Is there anything I need to do or have done for you to complete this project?
5
Finalize the contract. Whether you made your final decision based on the price, the design ideas, or simply feeling your contractor understands your project enough to do an excellent job, be sure everything is in place before you finalize the contract. Ask for references. Check to see a copy of their insurance and/or licensing documentation. Make sure you understand all aspects of the timeline: when the company can start and about how long will it take; rain and other circumstances do come up, but make sure the timeline suits your needs. Read the contract thoroughly and make sure that everything you wish to have done is clearly stated. Be certain any specific materials, colors, or items you want are listed in the contract. Check that the payment terms are listed and acceptable to you; it is very common for a contractor to ask for a deposit up front to ensure your project is on the contractor’s calendar. Most importantly, enjoy your new outdoor space. Landscaping projects can truly change how you feel about your home or business by providing relaxing outdoor spaces, beautiful curb appeal and, if done correctly, adding significant value to your home.
