Spring revival
Interior Designer Shaynna Blaze of The Block and Selling Houses Australia talks interior design and shares her tips and trends for the season.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR MAKING SMALL SPACES APPEAR OPEN AND INVITING? Keep your colour palette simple but not boring. Use one or two main colours on your walls, flooring and main piece of furniture so they all connect. You can use blacks, whites, blues and greens and then create one main focus like an impact artwork or rug so your eye is drawn to one grand spot rather than spreading lots of little things around the room and creating visual clutter. WHAT WILL BE THE HOTTEST DESIGNER TRENDS FOR THIS SEASON? We are back to romantic colours like blush and mint and anchoring it with rose gold and copper metals. The trends this season are fun without being childish.
FREEDOM ANDES CHAIR $599
Spring IS HERE to stay AND SO ARE FLORALS. ADDING A LIVELY PATTERNED ARMCHAIR to any space will make a statement. Pare BACK WITH BLOCK AND NEUTRAL COLOURS TO ACHIEVE An ON-TREND LOOK for THIS SEASON. It's a sure way to spark conversation.
WHAT ARE THREE WAYS TO ACHIEVE A ‘DESIGNER LOOK’ ON A BUDGET? I steer away from saying ‘on a budget’ as it instantly makes you feel like you are missing out on something. The key is to work out what the dollar value you are working with is. An instant change is using trend colours in paint on your walls and then buying an investment piece like a copper lamp or side table or statement chair, and then this allows you to layer more in the future without throwing things out along the way. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SPRING LOOK? I think it has to be the way bringing Spring flowers into your room makes you want to make change. I love nothing better than bringing in a bunch of flowers then pairing with coloured vases or creating a cluster area with candles and sculpture pieces. Spring inspires me to make change by shifting things around and making it feel and look new without buying too much.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE WHEN DRESSING A ROOM? Overthinking it and trying to get everything in all at once. A great interior takes time. It is all about getting a few main pieces then taking your time to bring pieces in to see if they work and introducing pieces that have a personal meaning rather than just because they look good.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE TRENDS COMING THROUGH FOR SPRING/SUMMER? I feel Spring and Summer inspired designs are moving from the East Coast and Hamptons style interiors, to the West Coast, with large inspiration coming from Californian coastal, to Palm Springs. This season we will continue to see a lot of the palm tree and tropical inspired patterns with influences of other tropical foliage including ferns and hibiscus flowers. The colours of these textiles are not necessarily in your classic tropical green tones, with a lot of them being influenced with chartreuse, navy and even rustic coral tones. As a designer from Queensland, I’m always getting excited about Spring and Summer trends, as they fit in so perfectly with our climate and lifestyle.

WHAT ROOMS WOULD YOU CONSIDER SPENDING A BIT OF MONEY ON?
questions to ask when buying a new mattress.
The bedroom would have to be number one for most people. We spend so much time sleeping, so it’s important to invest in a quality bed, pillows and bed linen to ensure a good night’s sleep. You also want to go home to an inviting and relaxing space at the end of a long day.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP STYLING TIPS?
Whether you like firm, plush or soft - finding the perfect mattress can be an overwhelming process. Ask these handy questions for a restful result! Is the mattress for yourself or your partner? 2 Do you have any neck or back injuries or ailments? 3 Have you ever had reconstructive surgery? 4 Would you prefer a mattress with springs, or are you open to other technology?
Consider creating focal points through art, textiles such as fabric upholstery and wallpaper, scatter cushions and vignettes. Cluster objects and accessories in groups, thinking about layering different colours, shapes, sizes and textures to create interest.

DOMAYNE SERENITY ROSE CUSHION PURPLE $59.95, TROPICAL BIRD CUSHION $44.95
Invest in good foundations. The most highly used and largest item will be your sofa, therefore think about the size and shape which best suits the space. Keep the sofa fairly neutral and simplistic and inject some artistic flair with the addition of scatter cushions to finish the look.

DESIGN - BOLD OR SIMPLE? This depends mainly on what’s already happening in your space. Is there already a lot going on? If so, go with plain colours but add textures in the form of flatweaves, braids and knits to create interest. If you're looking for a statement, then this is your chance to go bold and select something that will really set your room off. Choose a design with bold colours that you can introduce in cushions, vases and throws to really complete your look.
Are you at a loss as to how to make the most of small spaces? Don’t be! Capitalise on compact and unused areas with a pop out Wall Bed. Lush sofa by day and comfortable bed by night - this Italian made, freestanding Wall Bed will transform any room into a stylish and practical area. With a posture slat bed base and a visco elastic mattress, you will sleep easy on these clever and comfortable beds. Great for busy families and people on the go, the Wall Bed can be stored away fully made. The extensive range of Wall Beds will double the use of your space.
The most important part of buying a rug is not to be daunted by the choice. Selecting the right rug can sometimes be challenging, however the best way to be sure that you find the right one is to take a few home to see what works for you. This is often the quickest way to know which direction you should be heading in. DecoRug has a ‘try before you buy’ service with no obligation so you can shop risk free with the comfort of knowing that you will always find the right one.
NEW ESPRIT COLLECTION AT DECORUG
4 TIPS for choosing Rugs 1
SIZE SELECTION IS IMPORTANT Choose a size that gives good coverage for your space and allows the majority of the furniture to be placed on, or at least partially on the rug.
2
CHOOSE A QUALITY THAT SUITS YOUR LIFESTYLE Some fibres and construction types can be delicate and lend themselves to low traffic areas. If you are covering an area that is used by children, pets or is prone to high traffic, look for fibres like Heatset Twists. These won’t shed and are highly durable, making them practical for even the busiest of spaces.
3
COLOUR SELECTION This can be a tough one. Assess your room and make a list of what you like and dislike about it. Are you looking for change or are you happy to go with something that complements the look? Rugs are a perfect way to tie together a room and can help when choosing accessories and art in other colours that may not already be there. If you want to stay safe, grey is the colour of the season but turquoise is still on trend and is a great choice if you're looking for a pop of colour.

BURN THE CALORIES:
BY SOPHIE AARDOOM – Dietitian Try these three easy tips from accredited practicing dietitian, Sophie Aardoom, to boost your focus and mental performance throughout the day. • Start the day with a good breakfast in the first hour of waking. Make time to sit down and mindfully enjoy your meal. • Limit your caffeine intake, as this can create more stress on your body. • Kick your sugar cravings by snacking on a high protein mini meal. Try yoghurt, cheese and crackers or nuts with a piece of fruit to see you through to dinner time.

PILATES VS OTHER EXERCISES
BY RACHEL PHILLIPS – Pilates Instructor Pilates is a great supplement to your weight loss routine, as it utilises multiple muscle groups during each session. The Mayo Clinic conducted a study using several hundred people, weighing an average of 65kg, to find out about the calories burned during one hour of various forms of exercise. See the results below: Exercise Type

In Traditional Asian Medicine the liver is responsible for storing and circulating our blood and controlling the flow of our energy and emotions. When impacted, it can make us feel tight and stiff in our body, stressed, irritable and anxious, lack energy and interrupt our sleep. Some simple things we can do to prevent this from happening are: • Find ways to manage our stress e.g. exercise, mediate, practice mindfulness. • Avoid excess amounts of fried food, dairy, alcohol and caffeine.
We used caloriescount.com to calculate the following based on a 60 minute class of Pilates at a few different levels:
BY AMY BAUM – Physiotherapist Headaches are so common in humans. Here are a few tips from physiotherapist Amy Baum that will help you to relieve your neck related headaches: • Get up and move every half hour and stay hydrated. Drink up to 3 litres of water if you’re also doing a lot of exercise. • Check your posture frequently to rewire your body’s bad habits. Sit back in your seat and use the back rest to support your lower back. • Remember to sit up tall, shoulder blades squeezed slightly back and gently tuck in your chin to lengthen your neck and release tension and strain.
