It isn’t often that you have an opportunity to purchase a portion of history such as Haley Auctions and Realty will offer at public auction on Saturday, December 1, 2012. The Edward Larmon Property is a Kentucky Historic Landmark. In the late 1700’s Mr. Edward Larmon built a small log cabin on this farm and lived there while clearing and building the present house. The house was built in two sections, the original section is 1 ½ stories and was constructed of 18” thick limestone rock, hand cut & hewn. This section has a rock fireplace on each end. All the wood used is yellow poplar except for the downstairs floors which are oak and the windows are framed in black walnut. The upstairs is approximately 10’ x 28’ and the rafters are fastened with wooden pegs and square nails. The walls are finished with old sand-based plaster about 1” thick. The back door is original with the old hook and eye strap hinges. The 42” wide doors and the windows are aligned front to back which was a common practice of that time period. The old shutters still remain on the front of the home and are constructed of heavy material and fastening hooks on the inside. These style homes were used throughout England and Western Europe for centuries and since most of the early settlers were from this area it was only natural that they would continue the customs and lifestyles in the new world. After the rock portion of the house was complete Mr. Larmon built a brick kiln on the creek where he made the brick to build the brick section of the home, taking him another five years to complete. Edward Larmon died in 1853 and is buried in the family cemetery which is located approximately 500 feet from the home. This home is one of the oldest, if not the oldest in Logan County. The rock section of the home has been restored to its original condition and the property has been enjoyed by the McCarty family as a weekend getaway. The 91.87 acre tract consists of open land suitable for pasture or crops, woods with marketable timber, and a stock barn. The property is very secluded and has extensive creek frontage. There is a paradise for wildlife along the creek making this property ideal for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. This property is accessed by a 30 ft’ easement from Newtown Road.
