CHIEF EXECUTIVE Report Welcome to the new-look digital edition of Dogs Victoria Magazine and the heralding-in of a new and exciting age for Dogs Victoria. The timing could not have been more dynamic, these changes coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping not only our country but the world as we know it. It has been a challenging few weeks but in response to the current and ever-changing environment caused by COVID-19, we would like to reassure you that we are staying focused on the facts and official updates provided by the Australian Government at www.health.gov.au and are liaising with The Department of Agriculture. On Monday, 16 March 2020 Dogs Victoria announced the cancellation and postponement of ALL EVENTS until at least April 2020. Our response to the COVID-19 has also seen the office staff work remotely until further notice. Further, the Bulla and Skye sites have closed and we are all adjusting to this new reality. On a brighter note, we have the all-new website launching on April 15, an exciting new addition to the Dogs Victoria brand and offering. We look forward sharing this with our valued canine community. I encourage you to keep safe as we look forward to a more connected Dogs Victoria in 2020. It is in these uncertain times, an organisation such as Dogs Victoria with its collective 142 years of service, is well-placed to build on our already strong sense of community. Please do not hesitate to email me at ce@ dogsvictoria.org.au with your thoughts and feedback or call the team on (03) 9788 2500.
FROM THE PRESIDENT (ACTING) Firstly, welcome to the first digital edition of Dogs Victoria Magazine. A small number of printed editions are available on request. We are sure you will come to enjoy the accessibility of the digital editions however if you feel you need a printed copy, please get in touch with our Marketing Team. Following the change in Management Committee, and now the advent of the COVID-19 epidemic, it can only be said that these are unprecedented times. By now you will all be aware the Dogs Victoria team are working remotely (as of Wednesday 24 March, 2020) as we all navigate this new remote working space. Amidst the change and uncertainty, we can be brought together by our mutual love of dogs and their wellbeing. The team are working on ways for us to connect digitally in the absence of physical shows for the foreseeable future, so look out for those. Also new, is the feature story component of the magazine, this edition focusing on —unsurprisingly— COVID-19, and how it will impact our canine community. We are inspired to offer you new ways to connect during this time. All the very best,
Lynne Harwood PRESIDENT (Acting)
Kind Regards,
Matthew Monaghan CHIEF EXECUTIVE

RAFT Notes TRAINING YOUR GUNDOG RETRIEVER This is first in a series on training your Gundog. I look forward to sharing many tips and approaches to help you successfully train your new puppy.
Written by Trevor Stow You have picked up your chosen Gundog companion and he is eight weeks old. What now? In the good old days the general advice was to “let pup be a pup”. Today most modern trainers agree that a first constructive year presents an invaluable opportunity to establish a great working relationship between owner and pup. Early training can also prevent the development of bad habits. It is far easier to teach a pup the correct way in the first place than try and correct a problem later. Young dogs, like young children, have a limited attention span, so a couple of minutes formal training two to three times a day is better than a half hour once a day. The training should be structured, disciplined and not too long. You have fun but teach the pup to concentrate, focus and learn. AIDS TO TRAINING. To train a retriever you will need some basic training equipment. The first item is a collar. Next, we will need a lead and, in addition, a nylon cord about three metres in length with a clip on one end. Pup will need some dummies to retrieve. At this age the best dummy is a very cheap paint roller. These are covered in “fur” and they are very light. Finally you will need a dog whistle. As soon as training begins pup needs to be trained to come by a voice command followed quickly by three “bips” on the whistle. I cannot overstate how important a whistle is. When pup is working in the field there will be many noises that your mate will be exposed to; wind, water, dry grass etc. and there is a limit to how far away a human voice can be heard. On the other hand a dog whistle can be heard over a great distance. There is no use reprimanding your dog for not obeying a voice command when he cannot hear you in the first place.
page 4
TEACHING PUP TO COME. This is one of the most important things that we can teach our dog. How many times have you seen a great working dog that will not obey “come”? He is out in the swamp chasing every bird that he can see and ruining the day for everyone. With all puppy training, the dog should be rewarded for good behaviour. A bag of treats kept in the house with a few in your pocket at all times is your best training device for the first year of pup’s life. You should take every opportunity to reward pup, every time that he comes to you. For example, when you come home from work and he bounds up to greet you. Use this as a training opportunity. Whilst he is on the way to you, call him and then give him a treat when he arrives. When you are taking out pup’s food and he sees you and comes charging in, give him a call followed by a treat. In a more formal arrangement, keep a light cord on pup when he is being trained. Wait until he is distracted and then give him a call. He will no doubt ignore you but then you can enforce your command with the cord. Never give pup a command that you cannot enforce. A great way to teach pup to come is to take him for a walk. On the long lead, let him sniff around and enjoy himself but every so often call him in. Again use the lead where necessary and do not forget the treat when he arrives. I know one very successful trainer who trains his pups to come every night with their food bowl. He takes one item of dry food out of the bowl and calls pup. Pup normally races in to receive his reward. Our trainer then walks away. He then calls pup in again and gives him another item of food. This continues on until pup has eaten all his food. Don’t forget not only to call pup but to also give him three pips on the whistle.
COVID-19 COVID-19 With a pandemic said to define a generation, the key message is take it very seriously, so you can save yourselves—and the dogs you love. There have been two cases of dogs testing positive for coronavirus in Hong Kong. A 17-year old Pomeranian and a German Sheppard. It is unknown however whether these dogs died from the virus. However, it must be said that coronavirus is a separate virus from what is now widely known as COVID-19 and is not transferrable between dogs and humans. COVID-19 is also not transferable between dogs and humans, as information stands at the time of publication. Dogs Victoria followed a lead that dogs were potential carriers of the virus and received comment from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, confirming this was not the case. The official comment regarding canine to human transference is as follows: “The current spread of COVID-19 is a result of human to human transmission. There is no evidence that companion animals can spread the disease to humans or other animals. There have been no reports of the virus in domestic animals or wildlife in Australia.” Further, the spokesperson added that The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) advises there is no justification in taking measures against companion animals which may compromise their welfare. Acting President Lynne Harwood says Dogs Victoria is concerned about the in-direct health implications of our members if they do not take this seriously. “If we don’t take this seriously there will be a lot of sick people who won’t be able to look after their dogs, so everyone will suffer,” she said. “If you are unwell and need help with your dogs, please, after contacting the necessary medical practitioners, contact Dogs Victoria. “If members are unwell and can’t get out of bed let’s see if we can’t find someone who can help in the meantime.” Agriculture Minister and Emergency Response Minister, David Littleproud is responsible for bio-security Australia wide.
There have been no statements recently regards to agriculture and animal bio-security but he said on the ABC on March 23: “Stay calm and listen to the medical advice. Our Chief Medical Officer has provided the best advice in the world to the Australian Government from the very start. We have led the way in terms of slowing access to our borders from Chinese students to start with and in fact we were criticised for that. ...and it’s important that we look after one another, not only in a health provision but also in terms of economic - supporting those businesses out there, spending a quid with them will go a long way to making sure that our recovery is a lot quicker from this,” he said. Showing dogs in the foreseeable future Chief Executive Matthew Monaghan says showing events probably aren’t on the horizon for at least six months, in-line with Federal Government estimates for the new social distancing regulations that have recently come into effect, however at the time of publication the official date of postponement is until the end of April 2020. “Should a club wish to run a show it is up to them. We can’t control them but Dogs Victoria will not be able to cover them through insurance if they choose to do that,” he said. “We feel showing will be cancelled across the board at least until May 2020.” Dogs depend on us to care for them and ensure their health and wellbeing and the advice from management at Dogs Victoria is the same as the Federal Governmental advice: Please wash your hands after ever outdoor interaction, practice social distancing and if you are unwell and cannot care for your animals, please call Dogs Victoria for assistance.
COVID-19 Advice from the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria • There is no information available to enable a risk assessment of the potential for animal to human transmission. However, there has not been any substantial investigation • Information available today includes that one dog in Hong Kong was swabbed SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) positive, but did not seroconvert or show clinical signs of infection • Cats are known to be susceptible to and to transmit SARS CoV-1 (the virus of the 2003 SARS outbreak), which is a closely related virus to the current SARS CoV-2 (COVID-19). It may be prudent to wear PPE if handling cats from households with known exposure

General Manager – Engagement & Development Tell us about your role at Dogs Victoria? Where to start…Isn’t it exciting that we are a new department, with new team members who all share a great love and passion for dogs. Our team is responsible for Engagement & Development within the organisation, we are entrusted with responsibility to engage, grow, develop and innovate the organisation. From a branding perspective we aim to build greater awareness across the state and position Dogs Victoria as leaders in the industry with a strong membership base that is valued, engaged and growing. I was literally born into an events and hospitality family so events are in my blood and I believe there is great scope and opportunity to build greater shows, events and benefits across our two sites and other events. One of our first projects is to roll out a new look and feel for Dogs Victoria shortly, and there is so much more to achieve in the coming months. What inspired you to get involved with Dogs Victoria? Definitely being a part of the dog community, and learning more about the passionate people that is the membership base, but also the challenge that lies ahead of achieving some ambitious goals that will set Dogs Victoria up for stability and success for the next 50 years. Explain your professional background My career was launched at Melbourne & Olympic Parks where I spent 14 years developing, learning and growing into the person I am today. Managing the Corporate Events Business Unit, which had full responsibility of marketing, operating, sales, venue management, leadership, HR, systems and processes, this is where I found my unique niche career and enjoyed the holistic management of managing a business. I spent some time studying change management and project managing a few businesses through this transition. Your favourite moment so far working for Dogs Victoria? Working with my amazing new team! They really are so dedicated and committed to achieving success and I love how we are all working towards this in alignment. Actually, seeing all of the German Shepherds when I’m out at Skye is also a great highlight.

How do you spend your time outside of work? My fiancé and I are on our feet 24/7 with our 2.5-yearold “determined” daughter. Family, cooking, relaxing and beach visits – the beach all day long! Lastly, do you own a dog? Sadly, no longer, our family lost our German Shepherd several years ago which broke my heart :(
Royal Canin Knowledge Hub HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR DOG’S HEALTHY WEIGHT A healthy weight for your dog means better quality of life and reduced risk of serious conditions associated with obesity. Here are some ways you can feel confident you’re helping them stay fit and well. Whether your dog has recently lost weight, gained weight, or you’re looking to make sure it stays as fit as possible, it’s important to feel confident that you’re doing the right things to keep their weight healthy and stable. It can be difficult to resist your dog if they beg or whine, and many owners find themselves using treats as a way to manage behaviour. However, if you want to make sure your dog stays healthy, it’s crucial you maintain good practices in the home – and you encourage all other members of your family to do the same. What’s a healthy weight for your dog? The best way to find out the healthiest weight for your dog is to visit your vet. They’ll be able to tell you the most appropriate weight for your dog according to their breed, gender, age and several other factors. Often, a healthy weight is identified as the weight your dog was before they became obese – but this can be hard to define, particularly if your dog has been overweight for a long time or since they were a puppy. Some specific factors could make your dog predisposed to weight gain, and therefore maintaining a healthy weight is even more important. There are several breeds which are more likely to gain weight than others, including Beagles, Pugs, Labrador Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, Scottish Terriers and Saint Bernards. Female dogs are also more likely to gain weight, and if your dog has been neutered they are more likely still; the frequency of obesity in neutered male and female dogs can be twice that of unneutered dogs.
It’s best to consult a vet when before starting this process to make sure any quantities are moderated appropriately. Your vet will be able to advise you on the best course of action, as well as which specific foods are best for your dog. The energy density and calorific value of their food is an important factor to take into account, and the food should also include high protein content to support muscle mass, with a moderate fat content to help avoid weight gain. Some foods even contain a unique blend of fibre which helps your dog feel fuller without eating bigger portions. Sticking to good feeding behaviours with your dog You should rigorously maintain good eating practices for your dog so they have the best possible chance of maintaining a healthy weight. Feed them in the same place, from the same bowl, at the same time so they become used to specific meal times. Don’t give them scraps or give in to begging, and swap treats for kibbles taken from their daily allowance. It’s also a good idea to weigh them once a month and go for regular check-ups to get professional advice from your vet. With the right mindset, you will be able to support your dog in maintaining a healthy weight and enjoyable lifestyle. For more ideas on how to help manage your dog’s weight, speak to your vet who’ll be happy to advise you.
Beagle
Feeding your dog to maintain its weight If your dog has recently gained or lost weight, and is now at its recommended size, there are two options for continuing to feed them. You can stay with the same food as used during their weight-loss or weight-gain process, increasing or decreasing the quantities as necessary to maintain their weight, or you can choose a food with a higher energy density and retain the same quantity.

OBEDIENCE, TRACKING & ENDURANCE OTEC NOTES April 2020 No one could predict how our situation has changed in such a short time. Only last month I wrote about the devastating bushfires that affected so much of the dog world. It seems so long ago. Obviously, some people are still impacted, and we must not forget them. The problem is that so much has happened since then. Some very good and some very concerning things. All in a month. Notably, some, Victorians did get to Bermagui. It took at bit of checking re which way to go, due to reports of fires burning all over the place. Some people went via the Hume Highway, Vicroads said the Princes Highway would be open on the Tuesday before the first trial, and it was, so others went that way. When we went through, the road was very clear. Army and forestry workers had been on the job and the road was very boringly normal. Bit of smoke at one stage but nothing as bad as it had been here at Arthurs Seat when the NSW and Gippsland fires were at their worst.
co-operated. The grounds were in really good nick. Great to be back at a trial, lots of people were there socialising as many hadn’t seen each other since before Christmas. The dogs worked well and there was a very good success rate. In obedience Paul Kulhawec managed two passes one each for both of his girls. TJ performed beautifully once more and gained a perfect score in Rally Master with Ross Carlson. Bernie Wilkinson has announced his retirement. He was presented at his own club’s trial with a certificate of appreciation for his many years of service to the
Once there, all was normal. Both shows and trials were very well organised as usual. Social life was just as busy as usual. Six shows, 6 Obedience trials and two Rally trials in 10 days doesn’t leave much social time outside the ground. The locals were very pleased that the Doggies had arrived as usual. They needed a bit of a cheer up. They certainly had been through a scary experience. Some club members who lived in bushland areas were directly impacted by the fires, but the fires did not actually get near Bermagui or Wallaga Lake. They did have a lot of smoke and anxiety, and most people were evacuated when the power went off. After the crisis of the fires, there came a flood. The dam that feeds Bermagui went from nearly empty to overflowing. That is our country. It was the best weather I can remember. Wasn’t too hot. Much needed rain fell over the first weekend, and it rained for the Sunday night trial, and all night into the Monday show. Otherwise not much rain except at night. I judged UDX on the rainy night, and I couldn’t believe how well the dogs worked. The standard of work in UD and UDX was impressive as usual. So much has happened since and so quickly. As I write, just a few days ago, we had the Southern Obedience Dog Club double Obedience and Rally trial, the first all breeds trial for the year. Everything went smoothly. Even the weather

obedience community since gaining an obedience licence in 1987. As the OTEC Chair Lynn Klecka was in Adelaide representing us at the Obedience and Rally rules change conference, the certificate was presented by Dawn Howard on her behalf. We were very lucky to get Southern’s Trial in just in time before the Covid19 virus began to take its toll. The first important change was that all Dogs Victoria trials and events were cancelled, currently until April 30. Obviously, that could be extended. This meant that we had less than 12 hours to cancel Friends of Obedience (Foos). Thank you to all those people who had volunteered to help for the Autumn session. Special thanks to Margaret Widelock who did such a good job contacting people. Hopefully, by the time the Spring session is due to start the situation will be much better.
OBEDIENCE, TRACKING & ENDURANCE OTEC NOTES April 2020 One of the important activities that has had to be postponed until the situation improves is our OTEC judges training scheme. Currently there are only two or three elements for the 2020 trainees to complete, but they will have to be postponed until we can get people together. The OTEC is monitoring the situation closely and hopefully we will get back to normal before the end of the year. There is also a similar situation with the Dogs Victoria Instructors Scheme. The current situation is that KCC Park and Bulla are closed, as is the DV office. Staff will be working externally. Obviously, our lives have changed dramatically. Hopefully the Government will get on top of the virus outbreak and we will all get back to normal soon. Keep safe everyone Dawn Howard

Labrador Retriever Swimming, chasing, playing, walking with its owner – the Labrador Retriever is up for anything and everything! If you want a breed that makes training easy, that’s very intelligent, balanced and, above all, playful, the Labrador Retriever is for you.
Labrador Retriever
Most Labrador Retrievers also particularly love children. It’s important to remember that this breed does have one fairly big motivator – their appetite! This can make it challenging to maintain a Labrador Retriever’s healthy weight, more so than with other breeds. However, with a balanced, healthy diet and plenty of exercise it’s certainly achievable. From The Vet Sarcopenia What is sarcopenia? Sarcopenia is a condition characterised by a loss of muscle mass and muscle function. Overall it is a primarily a disease of ageing dogs and the risk factors include age, gender and level of physical activity. In a lot of cases, affected dogs do not show a loss of body weight as the subtle loss of lean muscle mass is replaced by an assimilation of fat within the muscle tissue. How does sarcopenia occur? Sarcopenia occurs due to a loss of muscle fibres (myofibres) as a result of either self-absorption or cell death of the individual myofibres. In young dogs the loss of muscle fibres are replaced due to “satellite” cells regenerating the lost fibres. As dogs age the satellite cells regression slows and hence results in a progressive loss of myofibres over time resulting in a leaner body mass.
How can sarcopenia be prevented? It is impossible to prevent sarcopenia, but the process can be slowed by measuring the protein content of the diet, and using concentric exercises (i.e. exercises using the muscles to contract). Aged dogs require 50 percent more dietary protein, when using a maxim form filled diet to maintain RNA protein oyrthens in muscle tissue. This translates into 3.75 grams of protein per kilo of body weight, which is significantly more than the 2.5 grams per kilo body weight needed in young dogs to maintain peak RNA and protein oyrthens. When looking at diets this in turn means an older dog requires 32 percent of its metabolisable energy as protein. When sarcopenia is looked at in humans, the only means found to reduce the effects of it over time is to regular exercise. The benefits of exercise help in reducting lean muscle mass as well as maintaining strength and hence providing a better quality of life. The same seems to apply to dogs. However, not all exercise stimulate the loss of lean body mass. Exercises such as weight building works very well, but aerobic exercises (i.e. muscle lengthening whilst loaded) whilst helping cardiovascular and with conditioning does not prevent against sarcopenia.

Colouring Competition 2019 Throwback moments Annual Report Community In conjunction with the ‘Big Day Out for Dogs’ which took place on Sunday 8th December last year, Dogs Victoria held an Inaugural Victorian Primary School Colouring Competition. The competition had an overwhelming response with many little inspiring artists sending in their best creative work! The Mayor of Frankston, Cr Sandra Mayer was invited to be the official judge on the day. After much deliberation the best of each category were chosen and awarded a special prize. Sandra revealed to Dogs Victoria that she was so impressed by all the artwork and the many creative and colourful entries, she really had a tough job deciding between all the entries.
Thank you to all the Victorian Primary Schools that got involved, we were blown away by the hundreds of entries received. Such talented students we have in Victoria! We hope to provide future competitions with just as much participation and fun, further building a more active and engaged canine community.

Dog Toys – It’s not all
fun and games Considerations when purchasing your next dog toy Chew toys are a popular choice among dog owners. They provide benefits to the development and strengthening of your dog’s teeth, face and neck muscles, as well as being a useful training tool for teaching puppies not to chew on your furniture. Perhaps one of the popular toys in this category is the rope toys (seemingly harmless) but one which has dangerous side effects if not used responsibly. In light of a recent news story, which details a dog toy related incident, Dogs Victoria is encouraging dog owners and carers to take precaution and be proactive with what your canine uses during playtime. In honour of protecting the health and well-being of all dogs, we’ve put together some important points to note about your dog’s favourite play things: Choose a toy that is appropriate for the size of your dog. Toys should be twice the size of your dog’s mouth to prevent the risk of choking or strangulation. Once your toys start to show signs of wear and tear you should discard them to avoid any accidents.
Rubber dog toys, an alternative to rope, tend to be quite durable and provide simular benefits, remember to ensure you choose one from a reputable pet store or vet. It’s important to never leave your dog unsupervised with rope or material toys as they can become a choking hazard if swallowed. Most of all, dogs are social animals and are much more excited if you participate. As you may expect, having a playmate is a lot more fun than playing alone. We know you love your pet unconditionally and strive to take good care of them. One of Dogs Victoria’s key priorities is to reflect best practice, and support the development and welfare of dogs.

Indoor Dog Activities
to Try This Autumn With the onset of cooler days and staying in-doors, it may be tempting to spend all day curled up on the couch with your dog. However, dogs need just as much activity and mental enrichment as they need love. Exercise not only builds a dog’s body; it helps build their minds, making them happier and healthier.
Play Date Surprise your dog with a special visit from another fourlegged friend
Here are a few ideas to keep your loveable canine entertained and healthy for those days when the clouds roll in and you’re stuck indoors.
Doggy At Home Day Spa Autumn is a good time to manage your dog’s wellness, especially their grooming needs to help them combat the cooler days ahead. Making sure that their coat is maintained with frequent brushing, bathing and combing will make your job much easier in the winter months.
Search and Sniff Hiding treats or creating a treasure trial for your dog to find is a great way to naturally entertain your canine as they tend to noodle around, stop and sniff as they explore around the house.
Another benefit of grooming is that it allows you to check your dog for any potential issues with their skin, nails, teeth, ears and eyes before they become serious. Simply put, pampering your dog at home will help them looking, feeling and smelling great.
Brush up on training Take this opportunity to practice tricks your dog knows or teach them some new ones. Teaching your dog new skills boosts their confidence, plus it’s a great way to sharpen their minds.
Enriching your dog’s life with fun activities such as these will ultimately help keep your dog happy and healthy. As well as giving you and your dog time that is set aside just for play. Further, strengthening your close bond.
Puzzle Games Using interactive games such as tug of war and puzzle toys are an easy and fun way to give your dog plenty of mental stimulation, and they can help improve your dog’s behaviour.

Puppy Culture On March 14-15, 2020 The Education Committee launched the first of many Puppy Culture Education seminars. It was a huge success and Dogs Victoria looks forward to hosting future events.
By Ellie Barclay What many people can forget is all the behindthe-scenes work that goes on during a puppy’s developmental stage to ensure your new four-legged baby grows up into a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. That’s where The Puppy Culture Education Seminar comes in –an inaugural event hosted by Dogs Victoria at the Spectator Dog Exhibition Centre, Bulla and featuring expert dog breeder and trainer Jane Messineo-Lindquist. Secretary of the Education Committee Wendy Johnson said Margaret Gray was to be particularly thanked for her huge effort in bringing the event together. “The knowledge on rearing and training puppies was very well received and the major work in negotiating the details was carried out by Margaret who worked late into Friday evening in trouble-shooting the setup of the projector and hosting Jane Killion,” she said. “Margaret is to be congratulated on leading the EC effort to bring this seminar to members across Australia.”

Dedicated breeders were there to educate all. It was a weekend of knowledge sharing, friendship and fun. One of Dogs Victoria’s key priorities is the promotion of ‘best practice’ dog ownership and of course a dogs’ well-being so of course the opportunity to educate breeders, puppy owners, or anyone involved with puppies on best-practice puppy-rearing and development was not to be missed. Featuring 10 segments over two days, Jane MessineoLindquist delved into the science behind the Puppy Culture Method. Jane’s insightful presentation covered many bases, centred around raising puppies to be confident enrichment- seekers, ready to take on challenges with joy and love to spare. She was a much-valued guest. From early neurological stimulation, to emotional resilience, socialisation and problem-solving puzzles people can try at home - it was all there. With a 100-strong attendance including some traveling from interstate the seminar held a great lively atmosphere, many laughs, cheers, awes and passionate was present from the audience throughout the weekend. By all accounts it was a brilliant chance for the community to come together in support of responsible rearing. Further benefiting not only breeders, owners and trainers but future puppies everywhere.

Spotting signs of
EY CONTACTS
digestive problems in your dog
If you’ve recently noticed some changes to your dog’s behaviour when it comes to eating or bowel movements, they may be a sign of digestive problems. If you’ve noticed changes in your dog’s digestion, bowel movements or eating, it’s important to take them to your vet so they can conduct a full examination. However, there are also many signs you can look out for which may indicate specific digestive problems. Understanding your dog’s digestion and what’s ‘normal’ for them when it comes to bowel movements and other bodily functions is useful, as you’ll be able to quickly spot if something isn’t right. Diarrhoea and digestive problems in dogs Diarrhoea is a common symptom of digestive issues, particularly with the large and/or small intestine. If your dog has diarrhoea, they will feel the need to move their bowels more frequently and do so very regularly. Their stool is likely to be more liquid-like than solid, and may contain mucous. Large intestine conditions result in your dog having small volumes of diarrhoea but passing these very frequently. Constipation in dogs Constipation is another commonly-occurring symptom of digestive problems, and can have a number of potential underlying causes. If your dog is constipated, their faeces will be hard or dry, and they will move their bowels infrequently. They may also show signs of increased straining when attempting to move their bowels. Vomiting and regurgitation in your dog Some digestive problems can result in your dog regurgitating or vomiting, which are two different bodily functions with different causes. Regurgitation is a passive activity which can happen soon after swallowing, and results in your dog bringing up undigested, solid food. They may also show pain when swallowing. Vomiting is a reflex action which is accompanied by nausea, retching or hypersalivation; food and liquids are brought up and food may be partially digested in stomach acid. These symptoms are most often associated with digestive problems such as issues with the transport of food to the stomach via the esophagus, and with the stomach or broader gastrointestinal system itself.

Your dog’s behaviour and appearance As well as diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting and regurgitation, your dog may exhibit changes in their behaviour and appearance which can signal digestive problems. For example, chronic digestive issues can cause an inability to absorb all the nutrients the body needs, leading to weight loss and a dry, dull, brittle coat. Appetite changes, along with flatulence and abdominal discomfort, may be a sign of problems in the small intestine, and if your dog exhibits many of these symptoms frequently, this could indicate they are suffering with chronic gastrointestinal problems. Getting to know your dog’s eating habits and other bodily processes is the first step in recognising when they may have a digestive issue. If their behaviour has changed significantly, including showing signs of vomiting, constipation or diarrhoea, it’s crucial to visit your local vet so they can advise you on the best course of action.
