CHIEF EXECUTIVE Report During the current landscape, as we work within the boundaries of the Stage 4 COVID-19 state government restrictions, challenges are faced daily and Dogs Victoria staff have had to adapt to an agile style of working. Dogs Victoria offices and facilities remain closed to members, however, staff are operating remotely and are available to attend to your enquiries by contacting the office on 9788 2500 or office@dogsvictoria.org.au We ask for your patience during this time, as we do our very best to accommodate your requests as efficiently as possible. During the month of August, we conducted focus groups to collaborate and refine the final stages of our new website. This meeting was chaired by Peter Frost, Chair of the Marketing & Innovation Committee. We had representatives from many groups within Dogs Victoria; some of these groups included the Obedience, Tracking & Endurance Committee, Conformation Committee, Conformation Judges Committee, Library Committee, Canine Museum Foundation, Investigations Committee, Disciplinary Committee, KCC Park Facilities Committee and the Bulla Facilities Committee. Thank you to all involved in this vital process. As the website is a live “store front” for Dogs Victoria, we look forward to continuing to build upon its foundation and offering many more member benefits as it comes to life and evolves. Dogs Victoria’s Applicable Organisation Annual Report and Dog Obedience Training Organisation Report was submitted earlier this month. As this is a key part of Dogs Victoria business, I’d like to thank everyone involved for their contribution to this important piece of work. “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” - Socrates We encourage people to continue to check the daily COVID updates by checking in to the DHHS website https:// www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus or calling the Coronavirus Hotline 1800 675 398. PRESIDENT Report In lockdown again, I’m having my first morning coffee while skimming through the Saturday Age. I say “skimming” because increasingly I tend to avoid the articles of doom and gloom, you can take only so much, and instead I look for the more positive ones (like what should I watch or cook). I do like to keep up to date with the most recent Trump antics though! It was then that one headline really jumped out at me. It read “Oodles of Love is just Oodles of Cash Away” (8 Aug, p.3). The article focussed mainly on the outrageous COVID spiked prices being charged for cuddly “teddy bear-like” designer crossbreeds (Cavoodles, Groodles, Labradoodles). The main motivation for people, it seems, sees a cuddly new puppy as a means to lift spirits or the perfect solution for keeping the kids occupied during this extended period of home confinement. The COVID spiked puppy boom, however, is not limited to Cavoodles and their like; even The Age article makes reference to some popular pedigree dogs like Havanese and Dachshunds. I too, along with many breeders, have been receiving up to three or four puppy enquiries a day for months now. I advertised my most recent litter in early June on the day they were whelped and was inundated, so much so I had to take the advert down after only three hours. The increased interest in pedigree dog puppies should be fantastic for our breeds, breed clubs and participation in our sport. But there is a real risk that breeders need to manage. I worry that in 6 to 12 months there will be a wave of out of control, unmanageable adolescent dogs being returned to their breeders, or worse, left at local animal shelters where the likelihood is that the dog will be euthanised. Will there be a COVID puppy syndrome, similar to the so-called Christmas puppy syndrome, but this time on steroids? This is an animal welfare issue. In the current climate there is an increased probability that many of the enquiries we receive are from people who have an idealised view of what owning a new puppy is like; they have no idea of the investment in time and long term commitment that is required to raise the balanced, well trained companion of their dreams. So what can we do as breeders to mitigate this risk? Breeders need to be extra vigilant at this time. Take the extra time to really ascertain the prospective puppy owner’s motivation for wanting a puppy, their experience with dogs, their lifestyle (different breeds and individual puppies are a better match for families with toddlers as opposed to families with teenagers, etc.) accommodation, and especially their commitment to raising the puppy. The aim is to give you confidence that the puppies you have so caringly raised are matched to their most suitable forever homes. Here are some of the interview questions commonly asked: • Why do you want a new puppy now? • What is your previous experience with this breed? • Are you aware of the ongoing costs of owning a new puppy (quality food, vet costs, grooming, kennelling, etc.)? • Accommodation: Where will the puppy live? Is your yard a suitable size for this breed? Are your fences secure? Where will the puppy sleep? • For how long will the puppy be alone during a work day? • Are you aware of the exercise requirements of this breed? • How will you manage the puppy’s training and socialisation needs? • Tell me about the commitment you think is required. • Have you thought of joining Dogs Victoria? Importantly, take notes and keep a file record of each interview. Just a few thoughts. Until next time, keep safe.

For our September magazine, Dogs Victoria has focused on the importance of dog health and nutrition. Dogs Victoria believes that a healthy dog is a happy dog, and we want to provide our members with information that will promote this notion. In this issue, you will learn about what ingredients are toxic for dogs, tips and tricks for cooking homemade dog food, and how dogs can be affected by allergies.

Yoga at your desk Easy stretches to release tension in the body 1. Cat Cow Pose

Throughout this seqence, breathe mindfully through the nose. As you inhale, look up and back, curve the spine. As you exhale, round the spine and neck. Feel that gentle strech in the neck and upper back. Repeat 3 times. This relaxes the neck and back and helps you feel more centered.

2. Side Stretch

3. Half Dog Pose

As you inhale, lift your left arm up, as if you wanted to touch the ceiling. As you exhale, stretch the left side of the body from the waist, bending towards the right. Look up towards your hand to deepen the stretch. This stretches the trunk, relaxes the upper body and creates more space for breathing.

Stand behind the chair and place your hands on the backrest. As you inhale, bend forward from the hips and walk the feet back, keeping your arms straight. Don’t arch the lower back and keep the tailbone neutral. To deepen the stretch, turn the chair around and use the seat for balance.

COOKING FOR DOGS

Popular ingredients and toxic foods to avoid Making home-cooked food for your dog is a wonderful way to ensure they are getting healthy and nutritious food and can offer some serious cost benefits as well in comparison to store-bought dog foods. Ensuring you are cooking food for your dog that is safe and meets their dietary requirements can be a challenge, and in this article, we outline some great ingredients and options to cook for your dog as well as some ingredients to avoid ensuring the optimal health of your pet. You should consult with your vet before cooking for your dog the ideal serving size for your pet, based on their weight, health, size and activity level. Every dog is different and ensuring all the right amount of nutrients such as fat, protein, carbs, and minerals are in your dog’s meal is essential.

Ingredients your dog will love

Whether it is lean chicken, fish, whole grains, boiled pasta, raw liver, or ground beef, there are some great home-cooked meals for your dog that are healthy and delicious. Cooking for your dog offers owners the ability to manage your dog’s diet, please a picky eater and ensure you are using ingredients that are safe for your pet.

Magazine September 2020 - page 6

Tips for meals for your pet:

Include proteins for your dog - consider beef, turkey, lamb, pork, tuna, a small amount of eggs, and high protein meats for your pet Add vegetables - whether it is cucumbers, sweet potato, pumpkin, green beans, carrots, corn or spinach, there are plenty of great options for your dog’s meals in the vegetable department. Carbs and starch - add in some rice, potato, pasta, and grains for additional carbohydrate for your dog.

Popular meals for your dog

A quick search of the web will show some great recipes for dog meals including the following: • Turkey and vegetables with brown rice and shredded zucchini • Beef and vegetable crockpot with kidney beans, carrots and squash • Beef stew with sweet potato, carrots, and green beans • Chicken soup with carrots, celery, sweet potato and green beans • Meatballs with carrot, egg and tomato paste • Beef, Barley and veggies loaf It could be a case of trial and error, and if you are moving your dog over to home-cooked meals, a slow progressive additional of your meals to their existing meal should allow them together used to some new ingredients.

Toxic foods dogs should avoid Often we treat our dog like a human; however, there are a few foods you should avoid giving to your dog as they can cause serious health problems.

Here are some toxic foods Royal Canin recommends pet owners avoid giving their dogs:

Alcohol

this should go without saying, however, alcohol can cause health problems, as dogs can’t process this in their kidneys.

Sweeteners

avoid any artificial sweeteners in your dog’s diet as it can cause issues with diarrhoea, bloating and can even be toxic for dogs due to the xylitol in the sweetener.

Chocolate

theobromine is found in chocolate, which can interrupt your dog’s metabolic processes and cause an upset stomach, seizures or heart problems. Likewise, avoiding food with caffeine, as an ingredient is important as it can make dogs very hyperactive.

Avocado

the skin, pit and leaves of the avocado can be quite hazardous for dogs, while the inside of the avocado is not an issue, avoiding avocado is good practice for your dog’s health.

Garlic & onion

while humans love to cook with onion and garlic, it can be very dangerous to dogs and can result in damage to their red blood cells.

Grapes, raisins and nuts

nice to snack on for humans; these healthy treats are not good for their kidneys and stomach with grapes and raisins, causing sudden kidney failure and nuts triggering stomach upset.

Dairy

many humans have intolerance to dairy, and dogs are no different. Milk, cream and cheese can be upsetting for a dog’s stomach and can cause vomiting and diarrhoea, so avoiding dairy is best.

Similar to cooking for humans, a dog’s diet should be broken up into protein, vegetables and starch, your vet can provide detailed information for the perfect balance for your dog.

UNDERSTANDING CANINE ALLERGIES Allergies in dogs - signs, causes and treatment Allergies are very common in dogs and tend to get worse as a dog gets older, so if you have ever wondered if your dog has allergies and what is causing them, we’ve gathered some common allergies in dogs, signs, causes and treatments. Often affecting the ears and the skin, canine allergies can cause your dog to scratch, chew, lick or itch excessively and be frustrating for both owner and your canine companion.

Common allergies in dogs and their causes

If you are interested in finding out more about allergies in dogs, here are some of the more common conditions to be aware of: Skin Allergies – officially called allergic dermatitis, skin allergies in dogs often derived from flea saliva and can make dogs extremely itchy on their tail and skin. Dermatitis can be caused by a range of factors including pet grooming products, pollen, insects and other irritants. Food Allergies – just like humans, dogs can develop allergies to food that can cause issues with their bodies. Reactions to food can include hives, facial swelling and itchiness, as well as possible diarrhoea and even anaphylaxis in rare cases[1]. Have a look at the grains and ingredients in your dog’s food to get an understanding of any intolerance. Seasonal or Environmental Allergies – throughout the year, dogs can suffer from environmental allergies that can be caused in a change of the season. Pollen is a common trigger as is plant fibres, dust mites and even mould. Often seasonal allergies can be difficult to avoid, as they usually will exist throughout your backyard and around your home. Flea Allergies – no dog is immune to fleas, and owners need to be aware of the discomfort fleas can cause to the skin for pets. Regularly checking your dog for fleas to eliminate allergens and using medication for flea control is highly effective.

Magazine September 2020 - page 8

Treatment for allergies in dogs

If you are aiming to treat flea allergies, one of the fastest and easiest treatments is a flea control product or flea medication prescribed by a vet. As well as this, treating your home for fleas can help to ensure any outbreak is under control. When treating food allergies, many vets recommend dogs are fed based on a hypoallergenic diet for up to 3 months; this will limit the ingredients in a dog’s diet and shed some light on what ingredients could be causing any allergic reaction. For environmental allergies, you can treat your dog with medication such as oral medication or steroids, or you can focus on bathing the dog regularly to help reduce symptoms, including itching and dryness. As a rule, it is always best to check with your vet regarding treatment for allergies to ensure your dog is getting the best treatment for their allergies.

Canine Superstars DOGS IN MOVIES

Over the years, there have been plenty of iconic dogs in movies both in Australia and across the globe that have stolen our hearts. From the Aussie film Red Dog to Benji, Lady and the Tramp, through to Lassie, dogs have played a hero role in some stellar movies over the decades. Whether you’re watching an action movie or a tearjerker of a romantic comedy, dogs in film can often steal the show thanks to their cute canine ways.

ICONIC DOGS IN MOVIES

There are plenty of dogs that caught their big break in film alongside their loveable human co-stars, creating a rush for their breed across the globe and showcasing their adorable canine qualities. Here are some of the most memorable dogs in movies:

Beethoven - Beethoven

Hooch - Turner and Hooch

Marley - Marley and Me

Toto - Wizard of Oz

A loveable St. Bernard, Chris, the dog, played Beethoven in the 1990s to the delight of millions of children (and adults) across the globe. Chris, the St. Bernard, starred in a couple of sequels and was trained by Karl Lewis Miller.

Gathering $245 million in the box office, Marley and Me was a Hollywood hit that starred Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston and a loveable Labrador Retriever. 14 Labradors played the Marley character due to the fact the story spanned 14 years.

Lassie - Lassie Come Home

Probably one of the most well known Collie was Pal who played Lassie. The 1943 film showcased the dog’s loyalty and courage in plenty of scary situations with her human co-stars. At the time, Pal was paid equivalent to USD$51,000 per week for his work in movies and TV shows - a huge amount in any era.

Starring alongside Tom Hanks in the 1989 film Turner and Hooch, Beasley the Dogue de Bordeaux dog enjoyed an international film career thanks to this popular comedy, which was a hit in the box office.

The Cairn Terrier was officially named Terry, however, took on the role as Toto in The Wizard of Oz in 1939. At the time, Terry made $125 per week in the role, which was a huge salary for the day. After The Wizard of Oz, Terry went on to star in 13 other feature films in his canine acting career.

Red Dog - Red Dog

Koko, the Australian Kelpie, was best known for his lead role in Red Dog. Born in Victoria, to Dogs Victoria breeders Carol and Len Hobday and was owned by Nelson Boss. Koko was trained as a show dog before being cast in the Red Dog film. Koko won a Golden Collar Award for Best Dog in a Foreign Film in his portray as the character.

The professional pooches we see on the big screen are not just ordinary pets who waltzed across the movie set, rather talented dogs that are trained as professional canine actors by experienced trainers Magazine SEPTEMBER 2020 - page 9

BREED SPOTLIGHT - Whippet

History

Characteristics

For thousands of years the Greyhound has been the template for later sighthounds, and the mild mannered Whippet is a highly successful member of this clan of lightning fast sprinters.

Whippets have a very even temperament and make an ideal companion. Unlike some other breeds, the males are as easy to housebreak, and no more aggressive than females. Both sexes make excellent pets. Males tend to be slightly more loyal and enjoy repetitive play. Females can be a little more complex, aloof and strong willed, but are equally devoted to their owners. When viewing a litter go along with an open mind.

The Whippet’s story begins in Victorian England. North country coal miners enjoyed the sports of dog racing and rabbit hunting on their days off. But they couldn’t afford to feed and kennel large athletes like Greyhounds, nor did they have the space to properly exercise them. The miners’ practical solution was to breed a smaller version of the Greyhound. Though it is uncertain which breeds were utilised to create the Whippet, the miners plainly did their work well. Their handiwork, the Whippet, is the fastest breed of its size, reaching speeds of up to 56km per hour. In its formative days, the Whippet breed had such colorful nicknames as the “Poor Man’s Racehorse” and the “Lightning Rag Dog” (they would chase a rag dragged along a straight course in an early version of lure coursing). The name Whippet seems to derive from “whappet,” an antique word that means “a small dog that yaps.” By the turn of the 20th century, textile workers from Lancashire were emigrating to New England. Among the touches of home they brought to the New World were their Whippets. The Whippet was an instant success in America, and Whippet racing for money or just for fun caught on with people from all walks of life, just as it had in England.

Magazine September 2020 - page 10

BREED SPOTLIGHT - Whippet Appearance At somewhere between 44 to 51 cm at the shoulder, the Whippet looks like a Greyhound, but smaller. The Whippet exhibits the classic “inverted S” lines of the sighthound. The deep chest and trim waist; a lean head supported by a long, arched neck; and slim but sturdy legs combine in a picture of an agile, fleet footed athlete. Between bursts of intense pursuit, Whippets love to stretch out and relax for long hours, enjoying the role of a loving, and loved companion.

Facts about the breed • The Whippet is a very intelligent breed • A Whippet’s frame is not suited for extra weight • Whippets can reach speeds of up to 56km • Height 47 – 51cm for dogs and 44-47cm for bitches • Life expectancy: 12 – 14 years

ANKC Activities Lure coursing, agility and conformation.

Training Whippets are calm in the house, preserving their energy for explosive bursts of running ideally in a large, securely fenced area. Young Whippets are smart, agile, and mischievous, and they can jump and climb, so confining them safely while not under supervision is a must. Early socialisation and puppy training is recommended and helps to ensure that the dog grows into a well adjusted, well mannered companion.

Now you know a little about the Whippet and have decided this is the dog for you or you want more information, make contact with the breed club. They will be able to give you information about available puppies and also suggest dog shows where you can see the breed and speak to breeders. In this way you will gain a better perspective of the breed and its needs.

Information sourced from the Dogs Victoria, Australian National Kennel Council Ltd and the American Kennel Club.

Grooming The Whippet’s short, smooth coat needs little maintenance beyond regular weekly grooming with a brush and the occasional bath. The ears should be checked regularly for signs of infection, and the nails should be trimmed often if not worn down naturally, as overly long nails can cause the dog discomfort.

DVD Reviews - WRITTEN BY CLARE HODGES This DVD ‘Foundation Work’ which is now out of production, was originally based on a training program for agility dogs. The foundation training is however suitable for most dog sports. A positive training program, with sound basics suitable for puppies and adult dogs alike. The program incorporates teaching the dog both an on and an off switch as well as teaching things like concentration, recall, and the like the training encourages teamwork and co-operation between dog and handler. The DVD is well presented and translates the methodology and actual training games in a clear and understandable manner with demonstrations by dogs and handlers of varying sizes, ages and experience. Deborah Jones is well known for her collaborations with Denise Fenzi being co-author of the popular Dogs Sports books and her own series of In focus DVDs and the book The Focused Puppy (all of which are in our library). The In Focus DVDs and books are a wonderful resource for both novice and experienced dog people alike.

Library Notes - WRITTEN BY: CLARE HODGES The library committee hope this edition of the magazine finds you all safe and well. As no doubt everyone is aware KCC Park and therefore the library are currently closed. We were very lucky to be open briefly when KCC park was reopened. During that time the Fox Terrier Club of Vic Inc donated quite a lot of historical items to us, including photos, pedigrees and old magazines. We were very fortunate that this donation has meant we now have a few complete years of Australian Dog News magazine from the 1940’s and 50’s to bind up. These magazines are full of interesting articles and photos, show results and news on imports. RAFT Notes - WRITTEN BY DIANE MCCANN ANKC Retrieving and Field Hall of Fame Inductees 2020 The ANKC Retrieving & Field Hall of Fame pays homage to those persons and dogs that have made outstanding and significant contributions to the sports of retrieving or field trials. Inductees in the category of prominent persons are acknowledged as being exceptional people who have made an outstanding contribution to the sport over an extended period of time. Inductees in the category of outstanding gundogs are recognised for their outstanding achievements in the disciplines of retrieving or field trials. The inductees for 2020 are listed below and we pass on our congratulations for their well earned recognition. Prominent Persons Mr Ray Ashenden from South Australia (retrieving trials) Mr Russell Whitechurch from Victoria (retrieving trials) Distinguished Dog Grand Retrieving Trial Champion Kadnook Sportingspirit (owned by John & the late Vicky Lawton Victoria) are fortunate to have two inductees from Victoria and a brief rundown of their amazing achievements are shown below.

ability to remember the fall of cast birds and showed natural hunting ability and general gundog smarts. This enabled Ben, when required, to work out on his own how best to complete a retrieve without assistance from his hander, a very desirable trait in a retrieving dog. Ben showed determination in all of his work with a never give up attitude and a happy demeanour. His relationship with his owner and handler John Lawton was constantly on display and John and Ben were always a hard team to beat. Ben’s achievements – Ben started his retrieving career in November 2010 competing in a novice stake. Seven months later Ben gained his restricted retrieving dog title in June 2011. In the same month Ben came second in his first all age stake. August 2011 saw Ben win his first all age stake and in February 2012 he gained his retrieving trial champion title. Over his competing career Ben won an amazing 44 all age stakes. He also had a great championship record with three wins, four seconds and three third placings. It takes a total of 120 points (equivalent to 20 all age wins) for a dog to be granted the title of grand retrieving trial champion and Ben finished his career with a total of 324 points, an amazing effort. Congratulations to Russell, John & Ben.

8.

9.

Describe the run that got your dog the points necessary to become AGCH: It was the first agility run for the weekend, normally the first run of the day we wouldn’t get a clear run mostly due to a fault on a contact, however this time Onyx ran perfectly, not a single paw out and was fastest 400 for the event.

10. How did you feel when you realised you had got the points? I was so elated that everyone at the trial possibly heard my excitement. 11. Did you have any struggles getting AGCH? We had many events with missed opportunities, usually with a fault on a contact, which we labeled as ‘Contactitis’. It took three years to obtain enough agility points just to get his ADM title which we gained in May 2017. At that point we had already accrued enough jumping points towards championship. I had kept a spreadsheet of all my passes and points accrued, so with every run we were counting down the points needed, I knew heading to the Stratford trial we only needed 15 points to get AGCH, which meant only one pass in agility was needed. 12. Is this your first agility dog? Yes, we have spent eight years learning together and still learning ways to better our teamwork. 13. Describe how you started doing agility. We initially tried K9 freestyle for a year, but he just had too much energy and lack of obedience

Magazine September 2020 - page 16

as he would constantly do zoomies around the pavilion. So we started obedience training at our local club, but Onyx was always watching the dogs training in agility. So once he qualified to work off lead we joined the agility. I then made some jumps using garden stakes and poly pipe and we also used the kids play tunnel at the local playground. We also joined some fellow competitors with their own home made equipment. It was the best thing we started as Onyx just loves it, the moment I pack the agility gear in the car he runs around super excited. 14. Describe your dog’s personality. Onyx is a very athletic and hyperactive, we fondly refer to him as the ‘ever ready dog’ as he loves to play, do agility and is obsessed with chasing a ball or a squeaky toy. He doesn’t like to be held, but loves pats and will happily chill out beside you on couch and will sneak up on our bed at night to lay in the middle. He has a cheekiness about him that we say he can’t help because the blackness takes over. 15. Does your dog have any funny quirks? He likes to carry his own lead and take himself to his crate after his run. He sucks his blanket in his bed in the morning. Sleeps on back of couch like a cat. 16. What is your dog’s favorite piece of agility equipment? he likes all the obstacles, but most likely the jumps, as long as he can go full speed and doesn’t have to wrap. 17. What is your dog’s favorite toy or treat : Onyx’s favorite would be any squeaky toy, he will persist till the squeak is broken. He will do anything for roast chicken, or his dried chicken treats. 18. What do your friends / family / work colleagues say about you doing agility? My daughter Zoe has joined me in the fun with our other dog. My husband is supportive, when I was getting frustrated with constant faults in agility he reminded me why we were doing the sport, but does refer to us as ‘doggy people’. My current work colleagues are more interested in their Prada accessories and are the non-pet type of people.

SCENT WORK Notes - WRITTEN BY: JUDY PILLINGER This month, I would like to introduce your Deputy Chairperson of Dogs Victoria Scent Work Committee and Victorian representative on the ANKC National Scent Work Committee. Sonja Needs has 30 years experience training dogs in obedience, tracking and agility. For the past 10 years however, her focus has been much more on scent work. Since 2010, she has been teaching scent work to members and affiliates in Melbourne, regional Victoria and also as far as Townsville, Hobart and Sydney. Sonja’s journey into scent work began with her Australian certified and operational Search and Rescue (SAR) dog Luther. Luther was a GSD who developed Canine Degenerative Myelopathy at six years old. As a working dog, he was highly intelligent but his body was failing him. Emma Smyth, a fellow SAR dog handler, who also happened to be an explosives detection dog handler, suggested giving Luther something to do and as part of his therapy they could train him in detection work as it is a great activity to do with a dog who has limited mobility. Not wanting to let an opportunity pass, instead of training Luther on a random target odour, Sonja decided to train him to find Eutypa, a grapevine fungal infection that impacts the wine industry. Sonja’s expertise is in sensory science and human and canine olfactory systems and she lectures animal science (behaviour and training) as well as winemaking, brewing and agricultural adaptation to climate change at the University of Melbourne, Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences. She has extensive knowledge on scent and how it is affected by environmental and atmospheric conditions from her research work with frost in vineyards and also from her days as a SAR dog handler, so it was not a great leap to train her dog on a grapevine disease. After the passing of Luther, Keely the Border Terrier, and Quinn, a GSD x husky, joined the team and Sonja initiated the University of Melbourne Detection Dog Projects, researching the use of detection dogs in conservation and agricultural pests and diseases. To date, they have completed seven projects in wine yeast taint, invasive weeds and insects to exploring the different training methods and ways to use different target odours including the ability to cocktail (or mix) odours to the effects of overshadowing odours (where one odour overrides the smell of another). These projects involve sometimes using her own dogs but largely use volunteers with dogs that have been trained in scent work. Sonja is a founding and executive committee member of the Australasian Conservation Dog Network (ACDN) which is an association of universities, government and private organisations (such as Zoos Vic) who use dogs in the field of conservation. The network is designed to allow people working with conservation

dogs to support each other with knowledge sharing, a pursuit Sonja is passionate about. This knowledge sharing has developed into a first published book “Tracking for companion and sports dogs” being very well received by the tracking community. Unable to teach people directly in scent work, Sonja has spent much of the pandemic developing online courses in tracking and scent work for people who are missing training and trialling their dogs this year but also in an attempt to allow people who might be based too far away from a dog club to learn and train their dogs. Sonja and Emma saw the value in training dogs in scent work early on. Scent work can be done by older or retired dogs, dogs with disability or even dogs that have an injury and need to be inactive. Scent work is also effective in helping extremely active dogs focus and settle and has also proven to be valuable in building confidence and calm in reactive and anxious dogs. In 2011, they started teaching small groups in scent work but increased numbers over the next few years as people started to hear about the sport of nosework (scent work) and discovered the fun and benefit of training their dogs, even without an active competition in Australia. Any dog is able to do scent work. You don’t need special scenting breeds (although these breeds will be particularly enthusiastic scent workers). Dogs can start learning scent work at any age, from puppies to the most geriatric. Training is reward based and you can reward even in competition! Scent work is devised so that reactive dogs can still compete, as there is no interaction with other dogs and limited interaction with people. It is exciting that people who started training their dog in scent work many years ago as well as a whole new cohort of dogs and trainers can now partake in scent work with an active competition sanctioned by ANKC allowing dogs to gain eight different titles.

OTEC notes WRITTEN BY: Dawn Howard Unfortunately, in Victoria, we are locked down again. Stage 4 in Melbourne and Stage 3 in regional areas. No training and no trials. Hopefully the lockdown works, and we can maybe manage a trial or two at the end of the year. Some clubs are doing their best to keep in touch with their members, via Zoom and Webex meetings, plus email messages and newsletters. Other clubs have been very active in producing training notes and videos. This is a hugely time consuming effort and we must be patient with our volunteers who are doing a fabulous job to the best of their ability. Are you having problems getting motivated to train your dogs? If so, you are not on your own. One of the main threads of advice involves not getting too stressed about perfection. Concentrate on enjoying walks with your dog as far as possible. But keep the boundaries in place; where the dog sleeps, waiting for food, walking calmly on lead etc. Handlers are complaining on social media sites about the number of people out there walking dogs that are not under control. There are definitely dogs around neighbourhoods that are not normally walked there. Some are possibly unfriendly and therefore a danger. One of our own dogs was attacked while tracking in the local park. Nasty event where a large dog came running up and literally grabbed him by the throat. Our dog was on a tracking line. The attacker was loose. When its handler caught up, she didn’t have a lead. Over the years I have witnessed dog fights, but I have never before seen a dog grab another by the throat and refuse to let go. Sometimes, it is not easy to know what to do when the unexpected happens. We are used to mixing with trained dogs, but when the unexpected happens and you encounter an aggressive dog, your reliable recall is all important. For your information here is what the UK Guide dog people teach their puppy walkers and young dog handlers to do when situations arise where you just want to get out of there, and you cannot just turn around and go the opposite way! (it’s a 3.5 minute clip) https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=juDEbnH6MWQ It’s also worth noting that the video is using semi trained older puppies/dogs. Your dog might need a lot of work to be as calm with the emergency lure technique (remember guide dogs when working, are service dogs that cannot afford to “get it wrong”, but your dog can learn to be that good too!), so do practice, practice, practice and use high value treats to make it worth the dog paying attention to you! Also, as a means of motivation, I have joined Mary Ray’s FaceBook puppy training lessons. Mary is a

brilliant trainer from the UK and like us she has been in quarantine for months, so has found another way to continue her classes. The big news this month is that the new obedience and rally rules have been published. Much earlier than expected. Congratulations to the National Committee who managed to get them ready in such a short time. In Victoria there will be at least one discussion group later in the year, to explain the new rules. It will be advertised well ahead. Due to some changes in jump heights, there will need to be changes/adjustments to equipment. It will give us the opportunity to build lighter jumps that are easier to maintain. Plastic panels come to mind. I am sure that with so much lead time, people will come up with innovative ideas. We all have the opportunity to look carefully at the new rules. Some of the changes are very subtle. Some have been long awaited e.g. removal of the out of sight sit stay in the open class. There are some really interesting new signs in rally. Lots of practice and training opportunities there. I recommend you carefully read the rules yourself. Another good news story is that Gordon Parsons and his wife Janet recently celebrated their 60 wedding anniversary. They were very busy receiving good wishes from their friends via Zoom meetings, phone calls and cards from the Premier, Governor, local member, Prime Minister and the Queen. Their daughter Karen also made them the most beautiful cake. Keep safe everyone Dawn Howard

SLEDDING SPORTS Notes - WRITTEN BY: IAN LUKE Sledding Sports are old and well known canine sports, and yet, relatively newly recognised ANKC sports with titles to be earned based entirely on a dog’s ability to perform. There are three disciplines within the sledding umbrella: back packing, sledding, and weight pull. Each discipline will test your dog’s physical fitness, as well as physical and mental soundness. Each has its foundations set in history, in the practical uses man has found for dogs throughout time, and indeed in the formation of certain breeds. In back packing, titles are based around the dog’s ability to carry supplies and provisions over distance. Our test is initially over a 16 kilometre hike distance, carrying a pack that weighs the equivalent of 15 percent of the dog’s own body weight, on no less than four separate occasion for a total of 64 kilometres, to earn the novice working pack dog title. To earn the working pack dog title, that weight increases to the equivalent of thirty percent of the dog’s own body weight. The hiking trails must be “back country”, and we are extremely fortunate enough to have some beautifully scenic trails in Victoria. Pack weights can be made up using sand, water, even rice, and towels can be used to help pad the packs, and pack weights can be diminished during the hike, but only though normal consumption, by the dog only, of food and water. An excellence title is also offered. It is a truly a test of working ability, with a total distance required to be hiked of 193 kilometres, to be completed in no less than three trips. Each trip must be a minimum of 64 kilometres, and overnight camping required. All camping equipment must be carried by either handler or dog. A sixty four kilometre hike is planned over three days, and the handlers certainly know they’ve achieved something by the end of it! Sledding events have not yet been offered in Victoria. However, there are two affiliates offering sledding classes and training days (the Siberian Husky Club of Victoria Inc and the Alaskan Malamute Club, Victoria Inc). There are four titles available, working team dog, working lead dog, and excellence variants of both. These require fitness, speed (appropriate to each breed), endurance, and the ability to work at close quarters with strange dogs without reacting. Titles can be earned through either racing, or excursions incorporating distance. If you have not been to a sledding race, the pure cacophony of overly excited dogs waiting for their turn to start will shock you. The pure, unadulterated joy the dogs experience from the chance to just run will make you smile. The thing for novice mushers to remember is that although your dog is attached to a wheeled convenience, the dog is effectively off lead. Vocal commands are used to start, stop, turn corners and to pass other competing

Magazine September 2020 - page 20

dogs. It’s not unusual to come across other distractions, anything from fast moving wildlife to that ever inviting tree. Distraction training and the ability to command from ten feet, or more, behind the dog, are things you need to work on. This discipline is not limited to traditional sledding breeds, with history showing us that every breed from the St Bernard to a Spaniel, Dobermans to Shelties, have been used as sled dogs. Be warned though, this sport comes with serious drawbacks. It’s fiercely addictive for both human and dog. Weight pull is perhaps a controversial discipline, with some well intentioned, but uninformed people questioned the legitimacy of the sport. But there’s an old saying in the sport, “you can’t push rope”. Either your dog wants to pull, or it doesn’t. You can’t make it. The aim of the game is to pull a cart five metres, inside a minute. The trolley starts out empty, with weight increasing each round. In Victoria, the trolley itself weighs 160 kilos, and the weight increases by 42 kilos at a time. Each competitor gets tw0 chances to pull each weight, until the total weight exceeds 500 kilos. Once they fail to pull, they are out of the competition, and the competition continues until there’s one dog left. Any dog can compete- over the years, I’ve seen Malamutes, St Bernards, Newfoundlands, Bernese Mountain Dogs, American Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Bull Terriers, Siberians, Staffordshire Terriers, Australian Cattle Dogs, Australian Kelpies, Rottweilers, Akitas, Rhodesian Ridgbacks, Samoyeds, Bullmastiffs, and even Whippets. I’ve also seen blind dogs and deaf dogs compete. The competition is divided by weight classes- * 15-27kilos, 27-36 kilos, 36-45 kilos, and 45 plus. Each class is won by the dog who pulls the highest weight. If two dogs pull the same weight, the winner is determined by time, quickest to finish wins. The overall competition is determined in two different ways highest overall weight, and weight to weight ratio. In competition, handlers can either drive from behind, or call from in front. Driving from behind is hard to achieve, and not something I’ve seen done. Calling from in front requires the handler to stay a metre past the finish line, and have no contact with the dog until the pull is complete. Handlers cannot use bait in any form, no food, no toys, not even a lead is allowed to be held. Titles offered are working weight pull dog and working weight pull dog excellent. To earn a leg, the dog must pull either eight or 12 times its own body weight, depending on the surface of the chute (natural or manmade). If your dog loves to pull, they may well love this sport. It is amazing to see the confidence that can be built into a dog through this sport, not to mention the depth it adds to the relationship between you and your dog. But it isn’t for every dog - if they

SLEDDING SPORTS Notes - WRITTEN BY: IAN LUKE don’t enjoy it, neither will you. Because you can’t push rope. All three disciplines have things in common. They require, and will enhance, working drive. They require, and enhance, strong relationships between handler and dog. And they require a focus on dog care. In fact, the care factor is the most important aspect of each sport. Currently, there are two affiliates offering weight pull and back packing events, the American Staffordshire Terrier Club of Victoria, and the Alaskan Malamute Club, Victoria Inc. Both would be delighted to assist you in getting started in these sports. Whilst these sports have been affected by the ongoing COVID situation, both are able to proceed with social distancing. REPORT OF THE EARTHDOG SUBCOMMITTEE FOR 2019 Earthdog activities for 2019 have been disappointing – due to the inaccessibility of the earthdog area located at KCC Park. The committee were unable to get cars or equipment in, and it was too dangerous to ask members to carry the equipment from the car park to the earthdog area across the grounds. This has cost the interest of a number of interested people – who potentially could have become new members.
