How to register your dog with DOGS Victoria
When purchasing a puppy from a breeder you should obtain from the breeder the following: i. i
A registration certificate, which incorporates a three generation pedigree evidencing the puppy is registered on the purebred register and his microchip number. Ensure that the transfer application form on the reverse side has been correctly filled in and signed by the breeder
It is necessary to become a member of DOGS Victoria to compete in any of the dog sports. You will then receive an updated registration certificate showing you as the registered owner of the puppy and a DOGS Victoria membership pack including membership card which must be sighted by your local council to qualify for the reduced registration fee for DOGS Victoria members.

CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW
is an exhibition of registered dogs at which best of breed and challenge certificates are awarded. These certificates are awarded to the best of each sex/best of each breed, and indicate the number of points awarded at the fixture towards the title of champion and grand champion. At these shows only qualified judges officiate
Pure Fun, Pure Sport, Purebred
OPEN SHOW

At these shows trainee judges officiate and it is considered the training ground for all young dogs and owners. It is particularly good to help socialise your dog as you may show your puppy from the age of three months
PARADE

Preparing for the show
We recommend that new members join the breed clubs catering for their particular breed. The breed clubs often conduct activities that will assist the new member to quickly acquire knowledge and a better understanding of the sport of dogs.
As the day of the show approaches you should be preparing your dog by regular grooming and training. Diet and exercise also play a large part in presentation of your dog. Certain breeds require special preparation/ trimming and information in this respect can be obtained from your breeder, the appropriate breed club and/or breed publications, which are available from the DOGS Victoria library at Park etc. In the judging ring pay attention to the judge and steward’s instructions. Exhibitors will be required to parade their dogs on the LEFT hand side. Bring the dog to the judge and stand it to the best advantage. Move the dog away from and back to the judge as requested. Control and exhibit the dog to the best advantage during the judging.
Pure Fun, Pure Sport, Purebred
If you are new to showing please let the steward know and they will assist you. When you have been judged remain within the precincts of the judging ring until your breed judging is completed. If your exhibit has been awarded first in your class, you will then be required to compete for the challenge certificate (at championship shows), best of sex (at open shows, parades or competitions) and best of age class in breed at all fixtures. Remain in close proximity to the ring so that you do not miss your call for further competition. If your exhibit was awarded a challenge certificate, best of breed, runner up to best of breed or best of age class you will be needed for the judging of group specials.

Pure fun, pure sport, pure obedience
Now that you have acquired a new dog, you would be strongly advised to do some basic obedience work with it. Looking after your dog and training it is fun, as all dogs like to please their owners. As a bonus, you and your dog may find that you can have fun learning to understand each other.
Pure Obedience All types of dogs can benefit from training. Look around to find a club that is convenient to you and where you feel comfortable. You may wish to compete in obedience trials. Your obedience club will help you to decide when you are ready. Most clubs have a system of graduated ability classes. Your dog must be six months of age or over to compete in obedience events. Trials are conducted almost every weekend and are advertised in the DOGS Victoria Magazine or from affiliated obedience clubs. Official entry forms are available from the DOGS Victoria website and entries usually close two weeks prior to the trial date.
10
Pure Fun, Pure Sport, Purebred
Open obedience trials are available to all breeds and restricted obedience trial that is restricted to a particular breed of dog or group of dogs. Some obedience clubs hold regular tracking training sessions.
Pure Tracking All breeds can track. More agile working or hunting breeds may find it easier to cover rough terrain, but some very small breeds have been successful. Some breed clubs run obedience classes. Otherwise there is a list of obedience clubs affiliated with DOGS Victoria in the DOGS Victoria Magazine and on the DOGS Victoria website.
www.dogsvictoria.org.au
Pure fun, pure sport, pure agility Pure Agility Many obedience clubs conduct agility classes. The rules for agility trials allow for three variations in jumping heights/lengths, to accommodate small, medium and large dogs. Some dogs are more agile than others but individual dogs vary in their ability to complete an agility course.
Pure Fun, Pure Sport, Purebred
No obedience prerequisites are required, but your dog must be 12 months of age or over. There are many more sports you and your dogs can get involved in, including dances with dogs, retrieving and herding. Visit our website for more information.
