FROM THE ACTING PRESIDENT DARREN BOWEY In late October, Dogs Victoria engaged a public relations agency and a political strategist to coordinate the campaign for ‘Amend the Bill’ that has resulted in a very successful toplevel lobbying and seen a wide range of media coverage achieved.
production and several PR stunts, including the Sunbury gathering and the working dogs at Parliament – that saw vast coverage of the issue on TV, radio, print and online. Our estimated editorial achieved is well over a million dollars in associated ‘advertising value’ and almost double if we include third-party articles.
Our lobbying efforts took us to meet with numerous politicians and key influencers over the past few months and we continue to receive feedback from these sources on the excellent campaign run by Dogs Victoria and its members. Dogs Victoria will ensure that we are party to any future consultations on any revised Bill and we remain committed to working constructively with the Government on any legislation that is relevant to our membership and involves animal welfare more broadly.
To ensure the momentum and political pressure is maintained, a long-term strategy for 2017 onwards will see a planning and consultation period with our PR team and political strategist to workshop further initiatives for Dogs Victoria, including member and public engagement type events, overall brand, internal and external communications.
A few of the marketing initiatives Dogs Victoria has undertaken in late 2016 include the creation of a website, several social media profiles, online advertising, video

RETRIEVING AND FIELD TRIALS
R AFT NOTES WR IT TE N BY: TR EVOR STEVE NS The winner of the Jack Montasell Trophy for the Dogs Victoria Retrieving Trial Dog of the Year for 2016 was Russell Whitechurch’s Nat 14, 15 ,16 & Gr RT Ch Adderslot Chief. Congratulations to Russell and Chief for a wonderful year of trialling which included winning their third consecutive national championship. It may come as no surprise that Chief has won, but it must be remembered that this award is only awarded for VCA sanctioned events so Chief’s successes at trials held interstate are not included in the result. Some people have asked me to explain the criteria for the awards, and since it is some time since this was last published, I thought that I should provide the details. The purpose of this award is to recognise the consistent achievements attained by a retrieving trial dog over a twelve-month period from 1 January to 31 December. To be eligible, competitors must reside in Victoria and be members of the VCA and the dog must be registered with the VCA. Points are only awarded at VCA sanctioned trials and placings must be verifiable. Points are awarded according to the following table: STAKE

DANCES WITH DOGS
DANCES WITH DOGS WR IT TE N BY: JAN ET TE WI LSON Competition news As 2016 drew to a close our dancing dogs were still working hard. It was pleasing to see the inaugural Melbourne & District DWD Club competition at Bulla in October being very well attended by competitors and spectators. Well done to this new club for running an enjoyable and smooth trial. A new competitor in the sport took out the high in trial award for freestyle. Gail Taylor and her Labrador Retriever Eadiepuss RN showed that this team will be one to watch in the future. In heelwork to music (HTM), Janette Wilson’s Associate Scarlette CDX RAE RM DWDF.N HTM.I showed her style by achieving high in trial.
As the competition year drew towards the end, the Dances with Dogs Club Victoria held its final trial for 2016 at KCC Park in November, enjoying the pavilion’s new surface. Once more we saw some amazing starter routines, but we were truly blown away by the fantastic standard shown in advanced. High in trial in ring A HTM was Kerrie Piper and her Border Collie Solan (Nyanga Solar Nite CD RAE RM AD JD SD GD SPD TD PT FS.I HTM.A ET) and in freestyle was Sue Murray and Bernese Mountain Dog Kai (RO CH HTM.CH Cloudforest Jaeger CD RAE PT FS.A). A very popular result for high in trial in ring B HTM was Carol Buxton and her Associate Gundog Kenny CD RAE DWDF.A HTM.A ET, and for freestyle was again Kerrie Piper with her wonderful and consistent Border, Collie Solan. The support and camaraderie shown by everyone at this trial was a joy to be part of! There is certainly a new wave of interest in starter and in advanced (trying for champion status), meaning that 2017 should be a year of growth for our sport. About DWD – A History Lesson Have you ever watched DWD routines on the internet or at Crufts? You might notice that the sport of musical canine freestyle and heelwork to music is referred to in different countries by different names. In Australia it is called dances with dogs. It is widely debated as to whether the sport originated in Canada or the UK in the late 1980s to early 1990s. In Australia, some states were performing the sport but either as a fun thing to do in training class or as entertainment at a show or festival. In 2005, USA sensation Carolyn Scott was invited to hold a workshop in Australia. Carolyn and her dog Rookie were famous for their Grease routine, and I’m sure that many people will have seen this routine on the internet. The level of interest in the sport was so great that clubs began to form around Australia (including Victoria). In 2008, after a lot of hard work by some dedicated people, the sport was endorsed by the ANKC Ltd (Australian National Kennel Council Ltd). This meant that dances with dogs (DWD) was an official titling sport and the states could

run sanctioned competitions. Queensland was the first state to run a sanctioned competition in 2009 and since this time, interest in the sport has gradually grown. Now in 2017 there are two Dogs Victoria affiliated DWD clubs, and some other clubs have also held DWD trials. In Australia, dances with dogs is run in two divisions (canine freestyle, and heelwork to music), and titles are attained in both of these divisions. Canine freestyle is essentially tricks and moves choreographed to music. Heelwork to music is much more defined, requiring up to eight heelwork positions that can be executed in six different directions. The dog is expected to be in the heel position for a minimum of 70 percent of the routine. Both styles require the handler to highlight the dog, and to present a flowing, creative and polished routine with great spectator appeal.

OBEDIENCE, TRACKING AND ENDURANCE
NEWS FROM OTEC WR IT TE N BY: DAWN HOWAR D Welcome to the new training and trialling year. Most of you will have had a rest by now and are beginning to train for the trialling year to come. Some Victorians will be off to the Bermagui trials. Good luck to them, and may the rain stay away. I am daring to mention that naughty word, as over the years we have had many Bermagui and Sapphire Coast trials where it rained and rained and rained some more. Once a trial was cancelled as the rings were waist deep in water. The last few years have seen perfect weather. Hoping it will be fine again this year, as the south coast has had its share of rain before Christmas. The sad and bad news recently, is that the Victorian dog world has been under attack by a group of people who have an agenda to restrict/control the breeding of dogs and other domestic animals, and to also control the activities of our obedience clubs. The Obedience, Tracking and Endurance Committee of Dogs Victoria (OTEC), has done its best to alert our clubs to this threat to their operations. Legal advice was obtained, and a member of the OTEC drafted a statement that was sent to all our clubs. In explanation, a bill was placed before the Victorian Parliament and was almost up to the second reading before Dogs Victoria
10
DOGS Victoria | February 2017
was alerted. The Bill in question is the Victorian Domestic Animals Amendment (Puppy Farms and Pet Shops) Bill 2016. The Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford acted on an election promise to rid Victoria of puppy farms and animals being sold in pet shops. We have no argument with the stated intent. In fact, very few Dogs Victoria members would support puppy farms and animals being sold in pet shops. However, Dogs Victoria, and its members, were caught up in the whole mess and were treated as puppy farmers. Dogs Victoria has conducted a, so far, very successful campaign and hopefully the Bill will be amended. At the time of writing all that has happened is that an inquiry was called for, and the Bill has been delayed. Fingers crossed that common sense will prevail. In regard to OTEC judges training, there have been some changes for 2017/8 with the lecture in October being deleted and the lecture in March each year being compulsory. We are always on the lookout for new judges. They are retiring quicker than they can be replaced. If you think you may be interested talk to one of the OTEC members or any of our judges. They can point you in the right direction.
The 2016 FOOs Spring session was well attended and hopefully the teams who attended had a positive experience. The 2016 November OTEC/FOO Obedience and Rally Trial was blessed with a good entry and thankfully good weather. Judging by the number of qualifying scores and title ribbons given out, it must have been a success. Friends of Obedience will commence again in March 2017. Look out for the advertisement. Also a huge thank you to all the many people who come forward and assist. The whole of the FOO sessions and the trials are totally run by the triallers who sometimes put their own dogs aside in order to help. A special thank you to Sharon Sempel who provided photos from the trial. It has been reported elsewhere that due to a decline in numbers, the Victorian Top Obedience Dog of the Year in its past form has been replaced with a new format where there will be Top Obedience Dogs in each of the five
www.dogsvictoria.org.au - Pure Fun, Pure Sport, Purebred
classes plus awards for second and third placings. Also there will be a Top Rally Obedience Dog award. Rules for both awards were published in the January Gazette.
Fourth reminder: Notice that the ANKC has called for submissions for the Tracking and Track and Search Trials Rules review to be effective 2019. If you haven’t already done so, write down ideas you may have for the rules review. OTEC will call for submissions and schedule meetings during early 2017. Closing date for submissions for Tracking, Track & Search and Endurance Rules close 10 April 2017 – submit directly to klecka@ncable.net. au or by post to Dogs Victoria, Attention: OTEC Chair, Locked Bag K9, Cranbourne 3977

THE LAW AND YOU
DEATH OF A PET When a loved pet dies, it can leave you feeling heartbroken. The grief you are feeling is real and just as significant as any other kind of grief. For many people, pets are members of the family.
disbelief, pain, anger, guilt and acceptance but there are no hard and fast rules. The grief process is unique and different for each owner as was the relationship they shared with their pet.
Although it can be devastating, coming to terms with the loss of a much-loved pet leads to reflection on the pleasure brought to us during the pet’s lifetime. The grief felt at the loss of a much-loved companion and friend is a reflection of the strong bond between owner and pet. Sometimes the death of a pet can be very unexpected; the result of a car accident or sudden illness. This can be devastating and it may take several days for it to sink in. This type of death often causes feelings of guilt or anger. These feelings are normal and will usually pass in a few days.
The first stage is disbelief and shock. It may be hard to accept the animal is no longer with us and the house may feel very empty.
If you have the opportunity to say goodbye, this can be very reassuring. Many people find that the sight of their pet, even though it may be unpleasant, helps them come to terms with the loss and start the grieving process. Children and the loss of a pet Children can be very upset by the sudden death of a pet; it may provoke feelings of abandonment or they may be concerned that their parents may die also. In some cases, it may not be appropriate to go into detail about how your pet died. Nevertheless, you should try to answer your children’s questions as honestly as you can. It is important that they understand your pet will not be coming back. Never lie to children or use terms that could be misunderstood, such as ‘gone to sleep’ or that the pet has been ‘re-homed’. The child may think that their pet will wake up or that it was their fault the pet went away. Euthanasia Veterinary staff realise that deciding to choose euthanasia for a much-loved pet is one of the most difficult decisions an owner may ever have to make. Euthanasia comes from the Greek for ‘a gentle death’. It is a great gift to be able to avoid unnecessary pain and suffering and to allow an animal to die quickly and painlessly. It is a very emotional time for the owners and the vet. Making the decision to let go of a treasured companion is never easy and your veterinary surgeon will provide guidance on when the time is right. The grief process The grief process usually consists of a number of stages: 12
DOGS Victoria | February 2017
The next stages are pain, anger and depression. This is the time you need the support of family and friends and a listening ear. Many people will experience feelings of guilt; ‘Did I do the right thing? What could I have done to prevent it?’ This is normal and will subside in time. The last stage of the process is acceptance. You have accepted the reality of the loss of your pet and can now look back with happiness on the many good memories of your time together. Coping with grief Grieving is about discovering how you cope with loss and there is no right or wrong way to go about it. Some owners find it comforting to commemorate the life of their pet by planting a tree or shrub or placing a special plaque in their garden. You may also wish to hold a funeral or memorial service to give yourself and your family the chance to farewell your beloved pet. Pet cemetery or cremation services can provide guidance and help you decide if this is the right option for you. The death of a pet is very upsetting and it is important to allow yourself time to grieve. Take time to talk things over with friends and family, don’t feel embarrassed about crying; it helps to release emotion. Your veterinary practice may have a bereavement counsellor or may be able to put you in touch with one if you need more help. For more information on coping with grief following the death of a pet, visit Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement. LIBR ARY NOTES WR IT TE N BY: C L AR E HO DG ES The library is currently seeking copies of royal show catalogues from the last 10 years for all states, can you help? We are also looking for Tasmanian royal catalogues of any year as at present we only have half a dozen; the same is true for Canberra. If you or anyone you know has these that they don’t want we would love to have them. We are also on the look out for Gazettes for NSW, Tasmania, NT, WA, ACT and SA for the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, we know this is a big ask but if anyone could help us with those that would be fantastic. Our goal is to have a complete set of each for our archive that will then be bound into years and are then available for research purposes. We do have complete or almost complete sets for some states and also for the UK studbooks and registers, (missing some of these from the 60’s) and of course for Victoria but the hunt continues for the rest. If you could help us in our treasure hunt that would be great!

FROM THE VET
PUPPY CARPAL LAXITY SYNDROME WR IT TE N BY: D R M IC HA E L B E LL What is puppy carpal laxity syndrome? It is a condition of young puppies where there is instability of the carpus. This causes either reduced or increased flexion of the carpus (wrist). Where there is increased extension (i.e. carpal hyperextension), the carpus is positioned lower to the ground than normal and there is an increase in the weight, leaving angle of extension (i.e. any angle of extension below the normal 180 degrees). In cases where there is deceased extension with weight bearing (i.e. carpal hyperextension) the weight bearing angle is any angle of extension below 180 degrees. The condition can affect one or both legs, and often is seen between 6-16 weeks of age. It is normally seen in larger breed dogs, but can also affect smaller breeds. What causes puppy carpal laxity syndrome? The cause is largely unknown for both hyperextension and hyperflexion, but genetics, environment (cage size and floor space) and stress may play a role. How are affected dogs treated? For mild cases conservative treatment is normally sufficient for a full cure. Here light exercise and a change to a balanced adult diet is normally used. In a study where this treatment was used 65 percent of puppies recovered within two weeks, with the remaining puppies recovered within four weeks. In cases where there is reduced extension of the upper wrist joint, and where the wrist could not be completely extended manually the wrist is placed in a splint for two weeks. However, if the leg is unable to be completely reduced to normal at the time of application of the splint, the splint may need to be re-formed each 2-3 days to gradually force the limb into a normal position. Once rectified the dog should be re-examined in 7-10 days to ensure the corrected wrist doesn’t regress in which case further splinting maybe required. Overall the prognosis is very good with mild to moderate control of laxity.
