ROYAL MELBOURNE SHOW 2017 – CRITIQUES Virginia Lyne Irish Setters: Best of Breed: Smooth moving, well balanced and correct size. Good head planes, pleasing return of upper arm. Quality bitch will all the assets. Best Puppy: Clean moving baby. Attractive head, good coat quality. General Comments: Generally overall correct racy, silhouettes. Some issues with rear movement being too narrow. Lovely coat quality. Most pleasing in head and eye. English Setter: Best of Breed: Very attractive blue belton - all one piece. Flowing easy moving bitch that covers ground. Good head planes, deep rib. A quality representative. Best Puppy: Good sized blue and tan boy, still in puppy coat. Good forechest and bone. General Comments: Smallish entry numerically, but quality in the challenge winners. Good toplines and heads generally. Some work needed on front shoulder layback. Gordon Setter: Best of Breed: Very correct, handsome male. Has bone, head quality and appropriate substance. In a beautiful jacket with quality coat. Sound and hard topline. General Comments: Very small entry with variation in type. Breed dog excels as correct representative. Large Munsterlander: Best of Breed: Singleton entry but a worthy representative. Wellbalanced, correctly marked with black head and ticked white body. Moved soundly with hard topline and correct tail carriage. Brittany: Best of Breed: Sufficient leg and overall balance. Needs to lose some weight for true working condition. Pleasing in head and overall muzzle/skull proportions. Best puppy: Promising black and white with good leg under. General Comments: Breed is being shown somewhat overweight. Eye colour is too often light. Overall, not as sound as I would like. Chesapeake Bay Retriever: Best of Breed: Quality bitch with excellent coat and texture. Good substance, deep rib and bone. Moves soundly. General Comments: Small entry but the breed winner could win anywhere. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever: Best of Breed: Exceptional, promising junior dog was winner. Correct proportions and overall balance. Lovely head and good pigment, sound legs, hard topline. I predict a promising future for him. General Comments: Numerically larger entry. Depth was in the males, some are too short in leg and too long in foreface, so muzzle to skull balance is not correct. All had lovely colour and correct coat texture. Flat Coated Retriever: Best of Breed: Well balanced bitch with lovely one-piece head. Would like a darker eye. Easy mover and firm topline. Good long rib and correct tail carriage. General Comments: Small entry and would overall prefer longer rib length and more one-piece heads. Coat quality good. Pharaoh Hound: Best of Breed: Bitch is correct size and proportions. Attractive head, mobile ear, correct bone. General Comments: Small entry, significant variation in size and the female fitted the size more correctly for me. Azawakh: Best of Breed: Lovely proportioned bitch with excellent, sound movement. Correct “square” look and moderate angles. Would like a slightly more exotic look to her head. General Comments: Very nice quality overall in this smaller entry breed. The entry was typical and correctly made. Some exotic heads and square examples of this old breed. Fox Terrier (Smooth): Best of Breed: Lovely example. Clean in skull, underjaw good. Excellent flow of neck into shoulder, correct set of tail, sound legs and short back. Best Puppy: Wonderfully promising youngster – excellent head and clean skull. Sound legs, short back. General Comments: Generally, quality examples – would like to see some shorter backs and cleaner back skulls, which perhaps reflects why a few are a bit up to size. All were sound on their legs. Golden Retriever: Best of Breed: Handsome dog, well balanced and exceptional ground covering movement. Strong head and hard topline. Coat a little rough after winter. Best Puppy: Sound bitch puppy with pleasing head and good legs. General Comments: Quite a variation in breed type today. Overall, I appreciated shoulder assembly and good return of upper arm. Rears were at times close and lacking muscle in upper thigh. Some are too long in body and appearing short on leg. Heads are generally good – soft and appealing. Whippet: Best of Breed: She took my eye for her totally correct front, good underjaw, beautiful eye and expression. Completely sound coming and going. Soft ear leather. A lovely Whippet. Best Puppy: Clean moving bitch with good curves. Sound. Pleased for her overall make and shape. General Comments: Strengths – good front fill and generally sound moving, coming and going. Boys were somewhat large. Concerns were lack of underjaw, some light eyes. Rather too many were flat backed when moving. Cocker Spaniels: Best of Breed: Wonderful representative of the breed, big rib, strong wide hindquarters, short hock. Moves with “push” behind and reach in front. Good feet and attractive head. Best Puppy: Lovely blue bitch that moved out to push a quality male pup. Short backs and good ribs with lovely heads, correct planes and eyes. General Comments: Overall excellent examples of the “Merry Cocker”. I found big ribs, broad hindquarters, good bone and feet. Pleasing in head and eye generally. Weimaraner: Best of Breed: Lovely feminine representative, clean in head planes, sound mover. Open stride from the side, hard topline.

www.dogsvictoria.org.au

Best Puppy: Smooth moving, well balanced puppy. Correct colour and firm topline. General Comments: Uniform, strong examples of the breed. Good firm toplines, ground covering movement with power and drive. Generally sound typical dogs. Weimaraner (Long Haired): Best of Breed: An immature youngster today, won for overall balance, clean head and good movement. General Comments: Considerable variation in type and balance. Some very heavy skulls. A breed in progress. Hungarian Vizsla: Best of Breed: Lovely mature bitch of correct type. Covers ground well, good firm topline and mature body. Supple skin and correct head detail. Best Puppy: Moves well on go around. A little too long in loin which affects him with a “roll” in topline. General Comments: Lovely quality in bitches with correct make and shape. Males were on the top of the size for a breed that is meant to be a medium, moderate sized gundog. Heads were often too heavy in backskull. Beagle: Best of Breed: Athletic well made dog, moderate and balanced, correct tail set and carriage, good feet, moved soundly with reach and drive. Best Puppy: Lovely conditioned puppy. Pleasing in head and expression. General Comments: Generally a sound entry of Beagles. Lovely heads and expressions. Firm toplines and excellent stern. Some were longer bodied than ideal. Borzoi: Best of Breed: The bitch winner could win anywhere in the world – ground covering gait, attractive head, sound legs, and curves in all the right places. Delightful. Best Puppy: Attractive puppy of good length and pleasing head. General Comments: Some very lovely examples of the breed. Attention needs to be given to dogs that are too short in loin and lacking the true effortless “lift” in ground covering movement. Deerhound: Best of Breed: The bitch breed winner was so light and effortless on her feet. Clean in the skull, coat a little blown, good type! Best Puppy: good type with harsh coat and excellent depth of body. Sound. General Comments: A little variation in type with a few somewhat more heavy in back skull and more “Irish Wolfhound”. Do remember the light foot and “lift” in the movement. Highlight was a class of five baby puppies. Labrador Retriever: Best of Breed: Glorious bitch – short backed, otter tail, dense coat, sound legs and hard topline. Truly exceptional example of quality. Best Puppy: Lovely yellow bitch with excellent coat, tail, jacket – was closely contested by a very nice male puppy. General Comments: Some of the best yellows anywhere in the world – short backs, correct dense double coats, firm toplines and otter tails in most of the dogs. Sound and athletic examples of the breed. English Springer Spaniels: Best of Breed: Handsome liver and white dog of correct proportion, good length of rib and good bone – sound on his legs and hard topline. Carries tail correctly – good feet. Best Puppy: Upstanding boy with lovely shoulder and rib cage. Moves soundly, hard topline. General Comments: Strengths – lovely reach and drive, with “push” in the rear. Hard toplines and wonderful bone. Feet good. To improve: some lighter eyes, greater length of ribcage with shorter loins would be desirable. Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen: Best of Breed: Right size and proportion. Good coat texture, sound legs. A little short in foreface. General Comments: Small entry of four – considerable variation in size and type. Greyhound: Best of Breed: Curvy bitch, deep bodied and a pleasing head. General Comments: Quality entry in all three – good curves, sound and attractive type. Harrier: Best of Breed: Promising young dog was BOB – good bone, straight legs and firm topline. Good stern. General Comments: Somewhat varied in size and type. Shoulder angulation could be improved. Irish Wolfhound: Best of Breed: Strong, imposing dog with size, bone and substance. Harsh coat, would like to see him use his rear. General Comments: Small entry. The bitches were giving good size and hound heads, but not happy to be here today. Norwegian Elkhound: Best of Breed: Good spitz type. Correct ear and head, and curved high set tail. Dense double coats. Would like a better front and shoulder angle. Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen: Best of Breed: Lovely example of breed. Right size, crisp coat, straight front legs, headpiece in correct proportion of muzzle to skull length. Best Puppy: Very promising baby – good legs, excellent coat and lovely length of neck. General Comments: Some soft coats and larger size in dogs than ideal. The challenge winners were correct in size and coat. Afghan Hound: Best of Breed: Classic dog – light of foot, sound, strong, masculine head and far away look in eye. Covers ground. Beautiful coat. Best Puppy: Attractive feminine bitch, sound and lovely head and expression. General Comments: Some quality examples of the breed but also work to be done on prominence of hip bones – several were flat in croup. Strong heads generally and good underjaws. Portuguese Podengo (Small Smooth): Best of Breed: Correct size, good straight front and short hock. Firm topline and correct ear and carriage. General Comments: Delightful breed. All had firm toplines and attractive expression. Some variation in length of body. Peruvian Hairless Dog (Large): Best of Breed: A singleton entry from minor puppy. Lovely type

and balance, firm topline, supple hairless skin. Correct bite, good head planes, moved well. Cocker Spaniel (American): Best of Breed: Exceptional black dog – big rib, firm topline, correct tail carriage. Covers ground efficiently and soundly. Good skull and muzzle quality, love flat jacket. Best Puppy: Well balanced black female, deep ribs and flat coat of exceptional quality. Carries herself well on the move. General Comments: Good entry – some coats were too severely barbered. Heads were varied and some lacked enough muzzle. Some light eyes. Excellent in blacks for overall shape, movement and coat quality. Pointer: Best of Breed: Moderate, balanced bitch – classic dish face, short bee sting tail, sound coming and going and hard topline. Best puppy: Lovely puppy with classic proportions, dish face and ground covering side gait – reach and push. So promising. General Comments: Interesting group of dogs – some lovely dish heads and some exceptional moving dogs – but not always on the same dogs! Excellent deep, long rib cages, good bone. Clumber Spaniel: Best of Breed: Correct bone and size, good skull and muzzle depth, tight eye. Sound on her legs. General Comments: Not as uniform as I would like – toplines are not level and some loose eyes. Good coat quality and bone. Field Spaniel: Best of Breed: Good size, bone and overall substance. Moved out well. Strong in head with a good eye. Best Puppy: A little insecure about showing her best. Lovely flat jacket with sheen. Good bone and pleasing in head. General Comments: Quite a variation in size and type. Toplines need to be level – several moving high behind. Some were short on leg. Beware of undershot bites! Irish Water Spaniel: Best of Breed: Good example of breed type. Sound front, correct curl and colour. Would like him stronger in rear. Sussex Spaniel: Best of Breed: Representative breed essentials – strong bone, correct colour, muzzle strength and domed head with low set ears. Welsh Springer Spaniel: Best of Breed: Senior, mature dog with firm topline, sound, correct “vine” ear. Best Puppy: Very happy, good colour, pleasing head, somewhat short on leg. General Comments: Considerable variation in size and proportions. Not always willing to move out. Colour good and heads conform to standard. Lagotto Romagnolo: Best of Breed: Excellent representative of the breed. Sound legs, correct upstanding proportions, full skull and small ears. Curl is dense and correct. Best Puppy: Nice baby with dense coat, correct tight curl and strong skull. General Comments: Generally sound in front, some work needed on rears that are narrow and lacking muscle. Majority of coats were good in curl and dense. Nice quality overall. Italian Spinone: Best of Breed: Has potential. Clean, flat skull. Sound in front, coat texture good, needs muscling as his “roll” is pronounced, good coat texture. General Comments: Not as uniform as I would like – several very overweight and lacking hard muscle. Toplines somewhat flat and head planes need improvement. Bracco Italiano: Best of breed: Single entry – has the breed essentials – sound, loose, supple skin and high head carriage on the move. Could lose a little weight. Basset Fauve de Bretagne: Best of Breed: Young bitch with excellent legs – sound moving with hard topline. Good colour and coat texture. Will mature into a very attractive winner. Best Puppy: Sound, rich colour and good legs. Pleasing in head, correct planes and proportions. General Comments: Some variation in heads, lighter eyes, generally good in coat, colour and texture. A few were lacking underjaw. An interesting breed to judge. Basset Hound: Best of Breed: Easy moving, good bone and legs. Wrapped front, clean back skull. A little more willing to move out than some of her competition. Best Puppy: Very promising red and white puppy. Balanced head, good length and wrapped front with bone. General Comments: Very nice quality overall – bone, substance, body, clean back skulls. Generally sound examples of this trailing hound. Saluki: Best of Breed: Handsome, sound, moderate, black and tan dog. Beautiful underline curves. Would change his eye a little. Best Puppy: Exquisite bitch – totally sound with curves in all the right places. Good head and underjaw. General Comments: Very pleasing entry – type, sound, correct ear carriage – a pleasure to judge. Curly Coated Retriever: Best of Breed: Wonderful tall stationed retriever. Hard topline, excellent reach and drive. Good tight crisp curl. Clean head planes. A quality example of the largest of the retrievers. Best Puppy: Promising baby, with bone, good hard topline, tight curl and correct tail carriage. General Comments: Quality dogs with bone and correct substance. Some heads rather coarse in back skull. The girls were between coats and did not have the tight, crisp curls of the boys. Toplines were at times showing dogs high in the rear. Warner Cespedes Arias Australian Shepherd: Best of breed: A male – very typical of the breed. Very attractive head, good ear placement, excellent topline. Good temperament, movement and construction. Best Puppy: Promising puppy with good temperament and fit for function. General Comments: Many animals of excellent quality. Australian Cattle Dog: Best of Breed: Sound structure, pleasing movement, strong
