FROM THE ACTING PRESIDENT DARREN BOWEY Happy New Year to all our members, it is now summer and extra care must be taken to ensure our canine friends are kept cool and out of the summer heat. The management committee have now made our extreme weather policy a permanent regulation following a trial introductory period to ensure a common sense approach is taken to protect not only our dogs at Dogs Victoria events from the heat, but also taking into consideration the health and safety of all workers at events such as stewards, judges and volunteers from extreme weather conditions. The newly appointed Dogs Victoria Facilities Committee now has responsibility for KCC Park and Bulla, it has prepared a number of submissions and recommendations to the management committee for maintenance and improvements to KCC Park. These include a full brief on a maintenance program and plan for the upgrade and refurbishment of current assets. Work has commenced to complete line marking outside of the office and around exhibition area one.

requirements at KCC Park for redesign of the office, library and museum, all of which have outgrown their current space. Many members may not know that our rules and regulations prohibit management committee members from being directly involved in complaints that are referred to the investigation and disciplinary committees. The compliance process is designed to act independently of the management committee to preclude conflicts of interest and perceived interference. If you approach a management committee member to discuss a matter at investigation don’t be surprised if they are not familiar with it, they are not meant to be. The management committee meets on the third Wednesday of every month, meetings start at 6pm and run for approximately five hours. If you wish to submit an item for the agenda of the management committee the agenda closes 10 business days before the monthly meeting. We invite feedback and input from the membership.

The management committee have given approval for a consultant to be engaged to scope our future

OBEDIENCE, TRACKING & ENDURANCE

OTEC NOTES WR IT TE N BY: DAWN HOWAR D We missed out on notes last month due to the December issue being dedicated to the Royal Melbourne Show. So much has happened and it is impossible to find the space to fit everything in. The entry for the Royal was encouraging, and the best in trial winner, from the open class was Stewart McDonald and Ch Stobar Quentin A Z BSCl1 CDX ET. Not satisfied with that, Quentin went on to win best of breed and finally best in group - third, (article elsewhere in this issue). Great to see our dogs doing so well in both conformation and obedience. There is a rule review for tracking and TSD happening at present. Submissions have been called for, and two meetings have been held to discuss and decide on Victoria’s submission. Submissions from all states are now on the ANKC website. OTEC has arranged further meetings to discuss all the national submissions. These meetings will be on 22 January at Bulla and 29 January at KCC Park both 7pm for 7.30pm start. The national rule review meetings will be held in Adelaide on 10 & 11 March 2018 for tracking and TSD. Endurance rule review meetings will be via teleconference on the 11 April 2018 at 8pm. Once the decisions have been finalised and approved, the new rules will come into force in January 2019. On a serious note: Working together in harmony Sadly, this is the second time recently that we have had to remind competitors that we should be mindful of respect for our fellow competitors. We must not under any circumstances: •

Make audible critical comments about other competitors when they are in the ring or at any other time at a trial.

Unfortunately after our first reminder, such comments have continued at trials and have been reported on more than one occasion.

Burke, has been a wonderful ambassador for her breed. She commenced her performance career in obedience in December 2010. In March 2012, Bella was diagnosed with an aggressive salivary duct cancer. It was uncertain as to whether surgery had removed all of the cancer and there was a long wait to see whether it had spread. Fortunately for Bella, the cancer did not return and she was able to continue her career. Bella continued in obedience and began rally obedience. She also excelled at tracking and track and search even being after diagnosed with Immune Mediated Joint Disease. She achieved her track and search grand champion in August 2016. Bella started her show career late in life and soon had her neuter champion title. She gained her rally obedience champion title at Werribee Obedience Dog Club in October 2017. This made her a triple champion. Bella is continuing her performance career now in utility dog for which she already has one pass. Everybody knows when Bella is in the ring because she has to vocalise about it. Bella has been able to achieve a lot in her career and Jacinta is very proud of her, and wishes to thank all the people who have mentored them along the way. Her achievements would not have been possible without their help. LAW AND YOU

THE LAW AND YOU WR IT TE N BY: TE R R I MAC DONALD Animal cruelty laws focus on dogs left alone in hot cars

to prevent the build up of heat to dangerous levels on extreme weather days.

Last year, the Victorian Government announced that changes to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (POCTA) gave animal inspectors and authorised officers greater power to intervene if they considered an animal to be suffering, or at risk of suffering, particularly during periods of extreme heat.

Tests conducted by Melbourne’s Metropolitan Ambulance Service on a 29 degree day with the car’s air conditioning having cooled the interior to a comfortable 20 degrees showed it took only 10 minutes for the temperature to more than double to 44 degrees. In a further 10 minutes it had tripled to 60.2 degrees.

Causing animals to suffer can be a criminal offence under the POCTA. If that is a result of being left in a car, the person deemed responsible for that animal’s situation can be fined up to $77,730 or face two years imprisonment if found guilty.

With the summer heat arriving earlier each year and more extreme heat events occurring, it is vital that Dogs Victoria members and affiliated clubs are conscious of the potential impact of these extreme temperatures at events and when travelling with our dogs. While there are legal obligations (which may be further enhanced in coming years), ensuring the health and well being of our dogs is the priority.

Inspectors were previously restricted to whom they could give a formal ‘notice to comply’ under animal welfare laws. However, the changes mean that Agriculture Victoria officers, Victoria Police and RSPCA Inspectors all have the authority to issue a notice to anyone in the community who commits or is likely to commit a cruelty offence – not just the owner of the animals. This means that any person deemed to be responsible for a situation that has resulted in an act of animal cruelty may be held liable for that act. The increased powers are in response to growing community concern over animal welfare, particularly during extreme weather events. Should an animal be left unattended in a hot vehicle, Victoria Police should be contacted immediately by phoning triple zero. Police officers have the power to break into a vehicle to rescue an animal suffering from heat exposure. It’s not only hot cars that are covered. Dogs left in parked trailers on extreme days of heat may also be at risk of heat stress, should the trailer not be suitably equipped to deal with such conditions. In such a situation, the steps for removing a dog (or dogs) left unattended in a dangerously hot trailer is the same as when dealing with an animal found in a hot car. Heat stress can be life threatening and it can only take six minutes for an animal inside a parked car on a hot day to die. Winding down a window, parking in the shade or leaving water in a car may not be adequate 6

AGILITY ON THE MOVE SUB M IT TE D BY: DOGS VIC TOR IA AG I LIT Y COM M IT TE E 2017 Dogs Victoria State Agility and Jumping Trial Another successful State Agility and Jumping Trial has been completed for 2017. As the only non-club agility trial of the year, the Dogs Victoria Agility Committee has to work hard with limited people to make sure the trial runs smoothly. In particular the committee thanks Nikki Janetzki for undertaking the trial secretary role and Cassie Crew for wrangling the equipment and grounds organisation. Thank you to Cathy Nystazos and Bernie Blaik for taking on kitchen duty, you both did a wonderful job. Our talented judges came up with super fun, challenging courses which the competitors revelled in, the calibre of dog and handler teams just gets more impressive every year. The combination of great courses and highly skilled competitors made this event one very exciting spectacle to watch. We would like to thank the scribes both for giving your time and for being open to testing new technology in the scribing processes. We hope the Victorian Nationals 2018 will benefit from your experiences. To all the stewards, set up/pack up crews, timing gate bringers, people who donated food to feed everyone, clubs that leant us their equipment, the people who towed out the equipment trailers and to everyone who went that extra mile on the day to help make this trial the huge success it is every year thank you.

ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY SHOW 1864

FIRST EVER DOG SHOW IN MELBOURNE WR IT TE N BY: KE N & JAN C AM PB E LL

The trophy was awarded at the very first dog show held in Victoria by the Acclimatisation Society on 7-8 April 1864 which appears to be the forerunner of the Melbourne Zoo! There was a total of 381 dogs shown. We have donated this trophy to the Canine Museum at KCC Park. Although it was damaged in the bonfire we have managed to get it into a reasonable state of repair as seen in the photo. Professionals may be able to restore it further. Walter Beilby was a Fox Terrier person back in the very early days in Victoria and lived on the Mornington Peninsula, and wrote the first dog book in Australia. Beilby says on page 314 that in the show in 1864 Messrs Bencraft successfully showed their imports at the first show for Fox Terriers.

Old Trophy presented to Keith Prior

A very exciting thing happened at Crufts in 2016 and nothing to do with the judging! Mrs Antonia Thornton, past President of the Fox Terrier Club (UK) presented Jan and I with a very old trophy that had been won in Melbourne in 1864 and the trophy had found its way to England. Mary Crouch in the UK found the trophy when tidying out her late mother’s house. Unfortunately it had been dumped unceremoniously in a bonfire with a lot of other stuff so it didn’t exactly look as it should. It was silver (we think) and engraved as the first prize award at the Acclimatisation Show in Melbourne in 1864, and won by a Fox Terrier named Prop, some 12 years before the founding of The Fox Terrier Club in the UK, Mary Crouch thinks that the owner might be a relative of hers. We do not know how it came to be in her possession.

Royal Melbourne Show 2017, Best in Obedience Trial, Best of Breed and Best in Group - Third – Gr Ch Stobar Quentin AZ BSC.1 CDX ET RN

Quentin came into the lives of Stuart and Megan Macdonald four years ago when he was 10 months old. This was his fourth and now forever home. Impeccably bred by well-known German Shepherd Dog breeders, Brank and Chris Auwema, he was sold as a pet, and soon after, sold again. Quentin was purchased by Stuart to be his companion, best friend and eventual obedience dog. He came with over 50 championship points, so Megan started to handle him in the show ring. She quickly got the show bug and not only achieved his champion title, but also achieved his grand champion title. Along the way Quentin has gained multiple best exhibit in group wins and was awarded best of breed at both the 2015 and 2017 Royal Melbourne Shows. He was selected as a finalist in 2015 and best in group - third at the 2017 Royal. Quentin has also been successfully shown in German Shepherd speciality shows and to date has achieved approximately 20 excellent gradings. This meant obedience had to come second to his show career and trials were selected on weekends where there were no shows scheduled. Stuart has used every opportunity to attend his local GSDCV branch, to learn as much as possible and to train Quentin daily to the level they have both achieved. Quentin’s obedience career started at the GSDCA 10

Dogs Victoria | January 2018

National in 2015 and has continued to winning best in trial at the 2017 Melbourne Royal. The team has also had several coveted German Shepherd dual performance awards for conformation and obedience. Quentin also has his endurance title and his rally novice title. Stuart admits it has been a lot of work to get Quentin to where he is today and there’s still lots more to learn and more events on the horizon, utility obedience for a start. Fortunately help and guidance from a number of wonderful people, has been available. It also helps that Quentin is a quick learner and is an absolute pleasure to have as part of the family. However, just to show how consistent the team of Quentin and his two handlers are, Quentin and Megan were again a class act at the 2017 Sunbury Cup Day Show where they not only achieved best of breed, but were short listed for a very strong group. Megan and Quentin flying around the ring is a sight to behold. This dog is always beautifully presented, gleaming coat, glowing with health and fitness. Congratulations to Stuart and Megan and of course Quentin.

RETRIEVING AND FIELD TRIALS

R AFT NOTES WR IT TE N BY: TR EVOR STEVE NS

“Four-Peat” by Russell and Chief It takes a great team to win three premierships in a row – the mighty Hawks did it in the AFL - but Whitechurch Russell and Chief (Nat RT Ch 14,15,16,17, Gr RT Ch Adderslot Chief CM) have gone one better and won four consecutive National Retrieving Championships. Considering that retrieving trials are knock out events in that if a dog misses just one item of game it’s out, one can get a sense of how momentous the achievement is. Only three dogs finished the 2017 National that was held in WA. Chief’s daughter Maggie handled by Russell was second and Noel Eltringham was third with Duke. Keeping it in the family Greg Playdon won the WA State Championship with Chief’s litter brother Carbo (Ntl RT Ch Adderslot Carbo). Another great achievement in 2017 was the team of Karl Britton and Red (Gr Rt Ch Acolon Prince of Cypher) who won three championships – SA, NSW and Victoria. Fantastic. At the time of writing, the Tasmanian Championship had not been run, but I am sure the Victorians will acquit themselves well. www.dogsvictoria.org.au

Congratulations to Russell, Greg, Karl and all the other handlers who achieved success in 2017. 2018 National Retrieving Trial Planning has started for the 2018 National that will be held in Victoria, and we are delighted to confirm that Field and Game Australia will once again be our major sponsor. Go to https://www.fieldandgame.com.au for more information about FGA. The convenor of the national organising committee is Greg Playdon and he will be delighted to co-opt you onto the committee if you wish to assist. Giving back to the sport Congratulations to Diane McCann who was recently upgraded to judge all age competitions, and also to Karl Britton who has been approved to be tested for upgrade to all age judge. If you want to follow retrieving and field trial activities you can access the RAFT Facebook page https://www. facebook.com/groups/295647843897241/ or the website Retrieving Australia http://retrieving.org.au. NONINFL AMMATORY ALOPECIA WR IT TE N BY: D R M IC HAE L B E LL Where there is hair loss but no associated skin inflammation the hair loss can be classified under the broad category of noninflammatory causes of alopecia. Such noninflammatory alopecia usually show diffuse and symmetrical hair loss, and can be associated with abnormal hair growth, where the defect occurs during the active phase of the hair cycle, or hair cycle abnormalities where a new phase of hair is not initiated. In general hairs are not easily removed in most noninflammatory alopecia. When considering the normal hair cycle, the cycle consists of the resting phase (telogen phase), the active phase (anagen phase) and the catagen phase. Shedding of hair is not part of the hair cycle. The hair cycle in most dogs is predominated by the telogen phase with the anagen phase determining the coat length. The telogen hairs are well secured and do not easily pull out. Causes of noninflammatory alopecia 1. Abnormal Hair Growth Here the defect occurs during the anagen phase. The condition causing this abnormal hair growth include abnormal hair follicles, congenital hypotrichosis (abnormal hair patterns), colour dilution alopecia and black hair follicular abnormalities. Follicular abnormalities are most commonly seen in Chinese Crested Dogs, and several hairless dogs. Congenital hypotrichosis is usually seen within the first six months of life and can be associated with other outer layer skin defects. Low dilution alopecia and black hair follicular abnormalities are colour related alopecias that normally commence gradually in the first three years of life. It is thought to involve a defect in melanosome migration or transfer which occurs during the anagen phase. 2. Hair Cycle Abnormalities These occur due to the hairs remaining in telogen and not replacing the anagen phase. Hence over time the telogen hairs are shed and not replaced, leading to a diffuse alopecia. There are many diseases that can be associated with hair/follicle abnormalities including: • hormonal alopecia (due to increased cortisol, low thyroid, high estrogen) • factor • follicular hair loss of several breeds • cyclic flank alopecia 12

Dogs Victoria | January 2018

• post clipping • slowing of anagen/telogen Of these, post clipping alopecia and slowing of anagen/ telogen alopecia cause a temporary hair loss, cyclic flank alopecia is often seasonal, whilst most of the other causes are likely to cause permanent alopecias with variable responses to treatment. The skin changes seen with hormonal alopecias can often also be seen with many of the other noninflammatory alopecias associated with hair cycle arrest, because of this in many cases histology of samples of skin from affected dogs cannot differentiate hormonal diseases from other causes of noninflammatory alopecia. In the next month’s article, I will discuss the tests that can be done to determine the causes of noninflammatory alopecia and what the chances are of curing the condition.
