VALE NOTICE
James William Henry Rodger After a long battle with prostate cancer, James passed away on 15 January 2018. Born in Stawell, Victoria in 1946, James was the eldest of three boys who relished playing sport, both cricket and Australian Rules football. He enjoyed success in both disciplines, and like other lifelong supporters of the Footscray Football Club, delighted in the Bulldogs AFL Premiership in 2016. After studying part time in Ballarat, he married Louisa in 1969 and undertook full time studies and qualified in 1971, started working in Melbourne in 1972. Qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1974, he established his own practice in 1984 and became accredited as a CPA. His love of dogs, particularly the German Shepherd, started in 1971 when, as newlyweds, their house was burgled. James and Louisa decided to buy a German Shepherd Dog. They joined the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria and within a short time, both became club obedience instructors.
He was also a trustee of the Canine Museum Foundation whose work has seen Australia’s only canine museum established at KCC Park, Victoria. His lifelong dedication and notable work for the German Shepherd Dog, GSDCV, GSDCA and wider canine community in Australia will not be forgotten and is now etched in our history. James was an honourable, forthright, passionate, and respected member of our fraternity. He was supported in all he did by his wife Louisa and his children Daniel, Briana, Jarrod and Sam. He will be sadly missed by all of us, but knowing he is finally at rest after a long battle with illness, gives us all some solace at this time of loss. Rest in Peace our dear friend.
His commitment and dedication to his favoured breed and breed club was too vast to summarise here, however he was the catalyst for the German Shepherd Dog Club establishing branch offices throughout Victoria, and he also compiled, edited, wrote and produced two definitive books on the history of German Shepherd Dogs in Australia. Whilst heavily involved in the administration of Council, GSDCV and other canine matters, he was very much hands on with the breed. Together with Louisa they established Rodatt Kennels and bred quality GSD’s from a very small breeding program and supported and promoted all GSDCA breed improvement schemes. His idealism, passion for breeding and showing led him to gain ANKC GSD judges licence in 1990, GSDCA specialist judge and GSDCA breed surveyor status. His contribution to the wider canine community must also be acknowledged. His record of achievement and business acumen saw him as a trusted and valued person who was truly interested in the betterment of canine affairs. Founding Secretary/ Treasurer of the Canine Research Foundation, he was most passionate about breeders being responsible with regard to the breeding of all dogs and that by supporting research into breed health, both breeders and consumers would be better served.

With the introduction of the separate heights rule change coming into effect in January 2016 the previous state champion format could not be continued. This new category of state champion has been created to acknowledge the high achievers for both agility and jumping (combined) in each height category over the trailing year. It’s so wonderful to be able to provide recognition for those consistently high achieving handler and dog teams. DANCES WITH DOGS
NEWS FROM DANCES WITH DOGS WR IT TE N BY: JAN ET TE WI LSON Showcasing DWD It was great to see some of our favourite teams showcasing DWD at the Big Day Out for Dogs.
simple things into your routine and do them well rather than trying to tell a big story with a young dog. It takes some of the pressure off the young dog”.
Some of our passionate followers have also taken the opportunity to take our sport to the Dog Lovers Show, talking to the public about the benefits and fun that you can have with DWD.
From Gaye Penny: “If a trick is able to be taught left and right make sure you teach both sides. Don’t take the attitude near enough is good enough, as it will be a lot harder to correct in the future. Reward placement is very important to make trick strong and successful. Remember each dog is different, work with their strengths and abilities”.
Thank you to the members of the DWD community who helped with these occasions. Your input is hugely appreciated. Dog lovers and competitors in other dog sports are always impressed by the focus and technical ability required within dances with dogs. DWD rule review The DWD rule review has resulted in spirited and passionate discussion about proposed changes and the possible development of new titles. The Victorian rule review meeting was well attended at KCC Park and resulted in a range of motions which the Victorian state representative (Sue Cordwell) will take to the meeting of all state representatives. Thank you to everyone who made submissions and attended these meetings. The committee will keep you all informed. Dances with dogs competitions for 2018 There are many days of dances with dogs competitions planned for 2018, with the big news being the inaugural Top Dog Competition to be held on the day of the Victorian State Competition on Saturday 14 July at the Bulla Exhibition Centre. This will give our very best scoring teams the opportunity to compete for the honour of being recognised on the perpetual trophy that will be displayed at KCC Park, as well as special trophies and gifts for all participants. Spectators are very welcome at this event. What we learn from DWD Many of our top dances with dogs competitors have started to train younger dogs after having success with their first dogs. Like any training challenge we all learn from our mistakes. So what did our experienced competitors do differently the second time around? From Kerrie Piper: “Going from Solan to Sprocket, I’ve approached his training knowing that there is no rush to hit the big time. Embrace the foundation moves, put the 6

From Heather Diamond: “I ventured into dances with dogs with Bob my tradition obedience dog. He excelled in the traditional heel position but that was it really. When starting Dee, we needed to train all position to take advantage of what DWD offers. We embraced box work, which cemented Dee’s understanding of DWD heel positions. Dee finds the DWD positions a calming place to be, which in turn builds her confidence and helps the outside influence disappear”. We can learn a lot from these experienced competitors. There is no doubt that with experience we will train each dog differently. Dances with dogs competitors use a myriad of innovative dog training techniques and equipment – why not come along to one of the clubs and try it out? OBEDIENCE, TRACKING & ENDURANCE
OTEC NOTES WR IT TE N BY: DAWN HOWAR D As I write, the Victorians have just arrived back from the annual Bermagui expedition. A great crowd of enthusiastic trailers attended. The team from Croydon did extremely well, the stars were Russ Grosvenor and Killara Miss Fisher, who won four rings and gained two titles with two scores of 99 in rally and 197 and 189 in obedience. Sue Timperley and little Elsa, Inneslake Simply Irresistible, were successful with 187 in open and Ruth Travis-Doreian with Kelly, Shelbronze One Of A Kind, scored 183 in novice. Bobbee Terrill got first place in rally advanced with 92 points. Melissa Ferabend and Shadow got two UD passes, one of them an OC pass. Other Victorians to do well were Therese with Moritz, Ch Berneridge Knight Of Carwatha AI, and Dawn Howard with Solo, T Ch Killara Splash The Cash, who both did well in CCD and gained their titles. Bega Valley and Sapphire Coast are popular because over summer, Victoria has a lay off for trials. Also it is a great holiday venue. Overall there are six obedience trials and two rally trials over ten days. Many Victorians also managed to compete in the six conformation shows. Next year there is a tentative plan to hold a RATG trial as well. This year the condition of the ground was amazing. The sports clubs have contracted an expert to maintain the ground. He also does the bowling green and a golf course. All three grounds look like a bowling green and it is really good to work dogs on. If a little country town can get grass in that condition, we should be able improve the Dogs Victoria grounds as well.
In March some members of the tracking fraternity helped out a production company to film a scene at KCC Park, for a forthcoming Channel 10 series called A Dogs Tale. It’s a story about a little dog called Barney who has lots of adventures with his owner. One good thing is that Barney is a purebred Jack Russell Terrier, who was bought from a DV registered breeder. The segment that we were involved in was one where Barney tried out tracking. I was asked to teach him. He loved it, and showed lots of promise. The production team also did overlay shots of experienced dogs tracking. Watch out for it later this year. In the meantime happy and trialling. OTEC Committee

The OTEC judges structured training day was held at KCC Park in March, unfortunately it was a warm day. Being the warriors that they are, the trainers and their support crews soldiered on in order to support the judges training. Our current crop of trainees are: Julie Morrison (CCD), Merrae Balaam and Norma Meaney (novice), Lisa Sinclair (open), Dearne Jackson (UD) and Marybeth Murphy and Michael Hayes (rally). Huge thanks to the handlers and dogs who did a great job, also to the stewards and helpers who worked in the heat. Special thanks to Ian Woollard and Dearne Jackson who came on the day before to set up the rings and came back to help and pack up the next day. Currently we are preparing for the autumn session of Foos and by the time you read this, we will have news of the early trials for 2018. www.dogsvictoria.org.au

NIGHT OF NIGHTS SPECTACUL AR WR IT TE N BY: SAN D R A MASH FOR D
VICTORIA’S SHOW DOG AND PUPPY OF THE YEAR FOR 2017 An evening “at the theatre” awaited our guests with the Bulla Exhibition Centre decorated with red carpet, gold stanchions and red velvet ropes. The stage was set with draped material around the ring, beautiful covers on the judging tables, along with music, lighting and sound setup by our professional DJ. The oohs and wows we heard as people arrived was very much appreciated and made all the hard work by my small committee and myself worthwhile. And it was a night of glamour with exhibitors and spectators alike; dressed to the nines in their formal attire that set the standard for the evening accompanying their beautiful dogs to perfection. The gala event is exclusive to dogs that have won a best in show and puppy in show at an all breeds or specialty in Victoria for the year, and this year there was an amazing showcase of high quality purebred dogs. There were 59 puppies and 56 dogs entered, vying for the accolade of Top Show Dog and Top Show Puppy for 2017. To add to the anticipation the top puppy draw was held for the first time in the centre of the ring prior to the three mystery judges being announced. The competition began with our wonderful stewards Anthony Price, Judy Oliver and myself accompanying the judges on the red carpet and onto the stage; Darren Bowey (Vic) Pauline Suhr (NSW) Yanina Smith (Tas) were revealed. Our MC, Nic Luke presented a brief introduction on each judge, all being international judges of high distinction and well regarded overseas. They were all very impressed with the extremely high quality of all the dogs that were presented to them. We extend our appreciation and immense gratitude, you had some tough decisions to make on a hot humid night! The cheering from the gallery was very noticeable throughout the evening. Bravo and thank you to all exhibitors and spectators for your incredible sportsmanship and respect shown to one another, you should all be proud. with two semi finalists secretly awarded; one from the top puppy and one from the top dog sections. These semi-finalists and our judge Rosemary Christensen, were unveiled prior to the final award for Top Puppy and Top Dog. Rosemary was on holiday from Townsville, and her 40 years professional expertise in the fashion industry and dog showing will be a hard act to follow. The semi-finalists were M Winch and B McCarthy and W Greasley and A Petersen who were all presented with a beautiful sash from Computer Sashes and a Diva’s Treasures voucher by John Thompson. And then there was a tumultuous applause as the final four took a walk around the ring (I think they would have been much more comfortable with a dog on the end of the lead), with the honour of best dressed gent bestowed to Max Winch and best dressed lady to Aimee Petersen. Each was presented with the Inaugural Night of Nights bestdressed trophies. Thank you Rosemary for accepting to be our judge, and she certainly thought the men out dressed our ladies on the night! Then it was down to the winner rounds that all had been eagerly waiting for, firstly with the two finalists for Top Show Puppy. This has to be the most unique final anywhere in the world, with the handlers being mother and daughter and exhibiting two different breeds a Weimaraner and Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. Slick and not drawn out was one of the many positive comments received. We noticed the improvements from last year and even though last year was good, the improvements made this year were even better. This was shown by the many positive glowing accounts from people verbally and on social media. IN THE LIBRARY
LIBR ARY NOTES WR IT TE N BY: C L AR E HO DG ES As we head towards winter and the cooler months now is the time to do some training before the cold really sets in. We now have two full sets of Denise Fenzi’s dog sports books and have the spiral bound copies of the Queensland training manuals back from the binding company. As the tracking season also begins this month now might be the time to check out our large collection of tracking training books. Due to some very generous donations, we now require only five South Australian Canine Journals to complete our set. These are 1962 - August; 1963 - January; and 1965 - May, June, August and September. If anyone could help with these that would be wonderful. There is a list of all the canine journals and royal catalogues we are currently searching for on the Dogs Victoria website and we would be delighted and grateful for any help we can get to complete these.
BOOK REVIEWS TALKING TO ANIMALS
OF DOGS AND MEN
For those of you who remember Barbara Woodhouse is from the English television series and many, many books – this is her autobiography. Born in Rathfarnham, Ireland in 1910 she was often left in her pram on the edge of a forest where wild deer would come to her pram to see what the human baby was all about.
A nostalgic look back at a unique period in history, it is also indicative of a relationship that is fundamental - one of affection, respect and in many cases, utter dependency between man and dogs. The book is filled with photos and experiences from the men who worked in the freezing conditions of the Antarctic.
BA R BA R A WOO DH OUS E
What a fascinating life! In 1919 after her father died, the family moved to Brighton in England for a short time, then onto Oxford. In the early 1930’s she set out on an adventure to Argentina. What a read that is! Barbara’s main love was horses with cows her next best – dogs came after those two. She was an expect horse breaker and trainer. The book has many photos taken of various animals in her life and her adventures. The library has two copies of this book for you to enjoy. Great bedside reading about a prominent person in the dog world. Heather Simpson
FI FT Y YE ARS IN TH E ANTARC TIC K E VI N WA LTON A N D R I CK ATK I N SON
The original dogs were sourced from many parts of Canada, Alaska, Greenland and Labrador. The combination of the breeds resulted in the Antarctic Huskies. Many offspring were actually born in the frozen conditions; 850 pups to be exact came into the world in Antarctica from 1944 to 1994. The book covers the stories of travelling many miles with the dog teams through blizzards and unbelievable conditions. The photos are fantastic of this vast wilderness. A must read for any dog lover, just to find out how the other half lives! This book was donated to the library by Janet Davidson and is available for loan. Heather Simpson
