FROM THE PRESIDENT WAYNE FLEMING It’s good to be back! Thanks to all those members who voted at this year’s election and in particular those members who voted for me. I am extremely humbled to have been elected as President of Dogs Victoria with such a large majority and at the same time very excited at the chance to work a new management committee.
recently about the production of the monthly Dogs Victoria Magazine and Gazette which costs around $250,000 per year. This is clearly one area that must be addressed.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing Acting President, Darren Bowey for his sterling work over the last 18 months.
At the March management committee meeting members of the committee considered the overwhelming feedback provided by our members regarding the proposed changes to the Dogs Victoria Magazine and Gazette. It was decided that the publications will continue to be published in hard copy and posted to all members each month for the remainder of 2018.
As I have said before the road ahead is huge but I am looking forward to the challenge. My first tasks will be to recommence on the promises made during my election campaigns.
So please ignore the notice regarding the magazine and Gazette in the May issue of the Gazette. Due to printing timelines this notice was unable to be withdrawn.
As promised, I will be seeking management committee’s endorsement to formulate a plan to conduct member forums throughout the state giving all members the chance to be part of the future improvement and growth of Dogs Victoria which will lead to a total update of Dogs Victoria’s current Strategic Plan. I particularly want to involve our country members.
If you have a suggestion on this issue please send it to feedback@dogsvictoria.org.au. This subject will also be addressed at the regional forums.
We must improve the way we do everything going forward. We need to be progressive, positive, robust and find better ways of doing things. We must continue to promote Dogs Victoria to the Victorian community and increase our membership.
Management committee has before it a number of recommendations for the future maintenance and development of KCC Park and members will be consulted along the way. Finally, the officially opening of the War Service Dog Memorial will be held at KCC Park during the championship show to be held on Sunday 8 July 2018. Everyone is invited. Bye for now!
To quote the CEO of Cricket Australia, “We need to be committed to improving our culture of inclusivity, supportiveness, accountability, respect, integrity and doing what’s best” for Cricket Australia. This applies equally for Dogs Victoria. We must ensure we have financial health and draw up budgets for the next five years, which means reviewing all income streams and how we can produce more income without drawing on members and affiliates. At the same time all expenditure must be reviewed. A lot has been said

JUNIORS
NEWS AND VIEWS OF JUNIORS WR IT TE N BY: HOLLI E MANN new favourite jackets. Day 2: I was lucky enough to show a Parson Russell Terrier - Teasle to second in junior bitch. That night we had a handlers ring practice, dinner with the judge and Crufts committee, presented our speeches and distributed our gifts. That night I was also thrilled to see Australia’s very own Riggs the Afghan Hound go best in hound group second from backstage. Day 3: Was the big day, it was hectic, filled with nerves, lots of phone calls and hugs, handlers day! Where I met my stubborn Beagle Sam and my swap dog Zeus. The boys did not put a foot wrong and I was very happy with what I had accomplished. Day 4 (Best in show day): I handled Archie the Weimaraner from Australia. Where we were awarded VHC in the junior class, and also Kelpie the Curly Coated Retriever where we were awarded VHC in a large open bitch class! Best in show was spectacular with the presentation and atmosphere being one of a kind! Crufts was a dream come true, especially to handle dogs on an international level in the breed ring as well as in handlers. Thank you to Jess Bello (NZ) and Catarina Molinari (Portugal) for making my dream a reality. A big thank you also to the Junior Kennel Club, Dogs Victoria and the Australian National Kennel Council for making my trip of a life time possible.
CRUFTS WITH HOLLIE MANN Crufts 2018 was an adventure I will not soon forget! It was such an amazing opportunity to represent Australia at the world’s most prestigious dog show. I have made life long friends and memories. I left on the 6th of March with my parents and my brother, and began the 22 hour flight to the UK; we arrived very cold and met with friends! The next day was the first day of Crufts. It was filled with endless shopping, watching Border Collies and picking up my 6

HERDING
HERDING ROUNDUP WR IT TE N BY: K ATE DOUR LEY
The ANKC Ltd herding rules were recently amended. Many of the changes were in order to improve the flow of the rules or clarifications to assist interpretation. Some rules will impact both affiliates holding herding trials and those who exhibit in this great sport.
Affiliate herding trial secretaries should note the changes around ages of exhibits for instinct (six months) and all other levels (nine months). Also the changes to the A course scoring and pre-trial judging sheet layout, which will mean affiliates, must use the new forms. High in trial is no longer required to be offered by clubs. Affiliates can elect which awards they wish to offer. Such awards should be listed on the schedule.
Handlers should note that qualifying scores have risen from 60 to 65 points, the changes to elements in the herding test and the requirement to enter the arena on lead and remove once the gate is secured.
Changes to titles have also been made. A new masters level has been added offering people an opportunity to refine their skills at each level by asking for higher scores (90+ in started, 85+ in intermediate). Herding championships now require a greater number of passes over 85 points but no longer require first places which allows for quality work by a number of exhibits at the same event. Versatility across stock types is also now recognised in the versatile herding champion in addition to across courses.
Please download and read the regulations for herding which are available from the ANKC Ltd website www.ankc.org.au

OBEDIENCE, TRACKING & ENDURANCE
OTEC NOTES WR IT TE N BY: DAWN HOWAR D Then we had the OTEC Easter Double Obedience and Rally trials. Perfect weather, great turn up, lots of passes and lots of compliments. One new initiative at the Easter trials was the learners’ rings. They were designed for dogs that were trained, but not quite ready for the next level. These very popular classes were run by Noeline McIlroy and Gordon Parsons. Teams came from as far away as Bairnsdale. There was a mixture of experienced handlers with new dogs and first timers at the different levels. I suspect there is a very real need for these classes. Clubs are encouraged to include them where they can. Thank you to Sal Robinson for providing such lovely photos. Also in March, there was the ANKC Tracking and Track and Search Rules change conference in Adelaide. Your representative was Lynn Klecka and I was there as an observer. Everyone is sworn to secrecy until the rules are published. All I can say is that all states had a fair go, and the tone of the conference was very conciliatory. Happy training and trialling. In March, we started off the year with the autumn session of Friends of Obedience (Foos). Each night was well attended and the weather was fine. Thank you to all our helpers who do such a great job. This year we had a variation to the theme, one session starting at 6pm and going straight through. Noeline and Rosalie have been on check in, and they hand out numbered tickets, placing participants onto lists as they go. There was a little misunderstanding on the first night. In particular, people were correctly told they were first etc, on the list for their ring. Then they saw others going in before them and they wondered why. The answer is that while the classes start at 6pm, judges and stewards go in earlier, so that they are then free to assist you. Foos relies on volunteers. As we keep saying, everyone has to help in some way. Either setting up, stewarding, cooking or pulling down. Otherwise we can’t keep up. This season we had some key people on the sick list: David Hutson, Barry Cotton, Margaret Widelock and Peter Howard. All of them still tried their best to help and all are thankfully, slowly recovering. Southern Obedience Dog Club was our first all breeds trial for the year. As always, very well run. The weather was hot and humid, but it was good to be back trialling. 10

IN THE LIBRARY
LIBR ARY NOTES WR IT TE N BY: C L AR E HO DG ES Here we are at the mid way point of the year already, our committee has spent many months now sleeving and sorting our pedigree achieve. This includes paper pedigrees some dating back to around the First World War to the 1980s and also incorporates the card index system used by Dogs Victoria in the 60’s and 70’s. We are also still attempting to find funds to acquire a microfilm reader as we have a large collection of registration and pedigree records that we have on microfilm with no way of reading them. If anyone could help us with this task it would be wonderful. We have also had another donation of royal catalogues. Perth ones this time, which makes our Perth Royal set from the 50’s to the last few years almost complete. We are still having a lot of trouble getting catalogues for the last 3-4 years for each state so if you have them and they are headed for the recycling bin please think of donating them.

JA K E PAG E
The author looks at dogs’ wild brothers, the wolves, and their closer cousins, the wild or pariah dogs: and explains the theory of how dogs were domesticated. Interesting he lists trainability by breed and not surprising my chosen breed Japanese Chin ranks at 62! A breed that needs at least 25 repetitions before they “begin to show any glimmering of understanding” and I just thought I was not talking Japanese to them. This book is now available to be borrowed and is one of many that have been donated to the library by Dogs Victoria members. Leanne Trenwith

BOOK REVIEWS DAISY IS A MUMMY
MY DOG REX
There were three baby Bull Terrier dogs that have a mummy called Daisy. A baby in the story also has a mummy but instead of a dog it’s a human.
My Dog Rex is the biography of a London police dog, in the 1950’s.
LISA KOPPER
The mum gets her baby out of bed like Daisy. Mum carries her baby in the kitchen Daisy copies. Daisy does the same as mum except for when mum cleans up her baby’s mess Daisy doesn’t do that. Daisy goes upstairs with her three children and the baby. Mum looks for them, she went upstairs and found them in her bedroom, she saw Daisy in there sleeping and the others awake on her bed then they all went to bed then they all went to sleep.
A RTH U R H OLM A N
It is a fascinating account of Rex’s training, family life and dramatic adventures with the Metropolitan Police. Rex was the first ever police dog to be awarded medals for bravery. Arthur Holman owned, trained, worked and loved Rex. We have many fiction books based on dogs, come and have a look. Lindsay Bolden
